Manchester From The Beginning (Episode 8) The Post WW2 years were marked by prosperity, fads, and innovation. Disregarding the threat of a new war, this might have been the high water mark for America. Steel mills in places like Bethlehem, PA were kept extrordinarily busy filling orders for new construction, and manufacturing was going all out in an incalculable number of directions, giving us things like stereo sets, clock radios, hula hoops, and that new opiate of the people, television, bringing into our homes the news via John Cameron Swayze's Camel Cavalcade Of The News, sports programming featuring the likes of Rocky Marciano, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. It was also television that introduced us to Ralph Kramden, Chester Riley, Red Skelton, and Sid Ceasar, gifted funnymen all. ... Then there were the cars. Unlike today when most of our motor vehicle transportation is nondescript, autos in the 1950s had character. You could tell a '57 Chevy from a mile away. There's no way you could mistake it f ...
Every year, when the snow melts in the north, pollen coats the cars in the southeast and...well, whatever happens in Texas in the spring starts happening, we all peek up into the sky, turn our clocks forward one hour, and start gearing up for the big event. You know the one I’m talking about, right? Of course you do. Baseball spring training. Didn’t see that coming, did you? My TV’s tuned to the MLB Network, I’m wearing my Mickey Mantle jersey and my Humboldt Crabs cap, and I’m buying season tickets to the San José Giants. That’s not to say that I’m not thinking about brass bands--I’m always thinking about brass bands. This month, my two favorite spectator sports collided in my brain, and it occurred to me that each brass instrument has a corresponding position on the baseball team. With a little help from my favorite baseball expert, I put together a list: 1) Solo cornet = starting pitcher, and solo euphonium = closing pitcher. Each of them believes they are the most important person in ...
This date in MLB Baseball History, March 10, 1963 In an exhibition game against the White Sox, rookie Pete Rose goes 2-for-2 in his first appearance as a Red. During a spring training game against the Chicago White Sox in 1963, the Reds' regular second baseman, Don Blasingame, pulled a groin muscle; Rose got his chance and made the most of it. During another spring training game against the New York Yankees, Whitey Ford gave him the derisive nickname "Charlie Hustle" after Rose sprinted to first base after drawing a walk. Despite (or perhaps because of) the manner in which Ford intended it, Rose adopted that nickname as a badge of honor. In Ken Burns' documentary Baseball, Mickey Mantle claimed that Ford gave Rose the nickname after Rose, playing in left field, made an effort to climb the fence to try to catch a Mantle home run that everyone could see was headed over everything. Rose made the club, and made his major league debut on April 8, 1963 (Opening Day) against the Pittsburgh Pirates and drew a wal ...

Grandfathers now tell their grandchildren that they got to see Mickey Mantle swing the bat. Parents now tell their children they got to see Hank Aaron hit towering home runs. And when I have kids, I will sit down and tell them I got to see Mariano Rivera throw pitches.
I've reached the point where I read on Sports Illustrated's website that Chili Davis is third all time in home runs by a switch-hitter behind Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray and I immediately know that he's also behind Chipper Jones and Lance Berkman and will soon be passed by Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran. The part that I found interesting, however, is that I've also reached the point where I know how many home runs each of these players hit. I'm torn between pride and discomfort at this development.
From: Wilkinson, Richard; Pickett, Kate. The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Societies Stronger. Kindle Edition. Forword by Robert Reich: In economic terms, CEOs have become less like top bureaucrats and more like Hollywood celebrities or star athletes, who take a share of the house. Hollywood’s most popular celebrities now pull in around 15 percent of whatever the studios take in at the box office, and athletes are also getting a growing portion of sales. As the New Yorker’s James Surowiecki has reminded us, Mickey Mantle earned $60,000 in 1957. Carlos Beltran made $15 million in 2005. Even adjusting for inflation, Beltran got 40 times as much as Mantle. Clark Gable earned $100,000 a picture in the 1940s, which translates into roughly $800,000 today. Tom Hanks, by contrast, makes closer to $20 million per film. Movie studios and baseball teams find it profitable to pay these breathtaking sums because they’re still relatively small compared to the money these stars bring in and the profits ...
