COLUMNS 2 Why Muhammad Ali Is Bigger Than Boxing By Michael Carbert · On January 17, 2015 Today is the living legend’s 73rd birthday and in a news cycle that barely lasts 24 minutes, let alone 24 hours, the day’s blogs and newspapers and newscasts will briefly pay homage once again to The Greatest. This is as it should be. It is impossible for any of our current sports stars to approach the magnitude of Muhammad Ali’s status in the 1960s and 70s. In the entire history of professional sports, let alone boxing, no one was bigger, no one had more social impact. Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Jim Brown, Pelé, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan — all icons of sport whose names will live on, but the shadow they each cast is dwarfed by that of the man who became a great boxer, a sporting legend, a political lightning rod, and a force for cultural change all at the same time. Ali in Africa: a world figure. For the purposes of this brief tribute, we will limit our focus to the impact of Muhammad Ali on t ...

You need to sort out your life and get some sort of plan in place to improve the way you feel right now I mean something just as simple as going to the gym 3x a week, cutting carbs down, upping protein and veggies with every meal and just sleeping a little more Look, you can’t keep carrying on the way you are, how long has it been since you were happy with the way your body looks in the mirror? 2 or 3 years? That can’t continue, I mean, your life will actually get easier once you take away all the bad feelings that you’re carrying regarding your physique And motivation is a myth anyway. Think of the most motivated people in history - Michael Jordan, David Beckham, Muhammad Ali to name a few, right? Now what did they have in their brains that you don’t have? NOTHING You have the exact same hardware that they have. BUT What all those guys managed to figure out was that if you combine the DESIRE to change your current situation with the PAIN of honestly looking at where you are right now…then that ...
In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, John Elway, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Carl Yastrzemski, Nolan Ryan, Mia Hamm, Lionel Messi, Lindsey Vonn, Bonnie Blair, these are just a few of the greatest names in Sports History, and not one of these world class athletes won every time they suited up. Instead, they took the things they learned from a loss and applied it to the next contest. And because of that lack of fear and desire to succeed, they will forever walk the earth as Champions!

Now I guess the pundits will stop saying if Brady or Manning is the Greatest of all time. Over and over and over again for the past decade we always hear the usual question 'Is Brady the greatest of all time', or 'Is Manning the greatest of all time'? We seem as a society to become PRISONERS OF THE MOMENT. Montana is and will always be Number ONE. Just like I stated on Friday that TRUE GREATNESS comes around every 50-60 years. Whether they are Joe Montana or Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali or Marlon Brando. When you actually see and witness TRUE GREATNESS, its very hard or even impossible to duplicate.

Talking about skating in a post this morning got me thinking about just how much I love this skate thing. To me, our skating is an art form. The ways we move, the styles, the individuality, the freedom, the love, the grind, the determination to skate at any cost... those little nuances in movement that allow us to recognize a particular skater from clear across the skate floor. We're like a team of Michael Jordan's, Gabby Douglas', Williams Sisters, Muhammad Ali's, Larry Birds, Jackie Robinsons, Judith Jamison's and Baryshnikovs. We are dedicated to this craft, this art form, this thing called skating. If everyone could do it, they'd probably be doing it. Everyone can't "be like Mike." We are special. We were given this love and drive and passion and crazy ability to do what we do and we should always recognize and appreciate it. We are more than just skaters. We are Greatness. We can teach a person to skate, but we can't teach Greatness. Greatness comes from within. Greatness comes from the Grin ...

I must say... Jay-Z is genius!!! One of the greatest rappers that ever lived. It's crazy how he is 40 years old and he keeps himself relevant. Its not about him making money from music, is now about putting out masterpieces of work and showing his greatness to become better. We all should want to strive for greatness, look at people like Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Alexander Mcqueen, Tom Ford, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo DaVinci, Sydney Poitier and all the other greats in their craft of different era, they all wanted to reach a level of immortality. That what we all should want, but I feel like now in today's society, not too many kids look for that. Let's work on becoming better and leaving our mark on earth.
Tony Hawk's first skateboard will join Michael Jordan's jersey and Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves in the Smithsonian this weekend. If you could own any piece of Sports History, what would it be?
Here's some motivational quotes for you, see which one is your favorite. "Every time you stay out late; every time you sleep in; every time you miss a workout; every time you don't give 100% - You make it that much easier for me to beat you." - Unknown "You can have results or you can have your excuses. You cannot have both." - Unknown "We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill "Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you." - Ralph Waldo Emerson "My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength." - Michael Jordan "Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever." - Lance Armstrong "I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life a champion.'" - Muhammad Ali "Only the weak at ...
Someone recently said "Onyi do you know when people speak about Basketball they automatically think of Michael Jordan and when people think of Boxing, people straight away think about Muhammad Ali and when they think about the likes of Warren Buffett and Richard Branson, people think wealth and business but do you know when people think about Excellence and Distinction people automatically think of you"? I replied "yes". He went on to say with a smile on his face "aren't you going to say anything more than that"? I replied with a cheeky grin "no".
So u want to get a degree, why, let me tell u what society will tell you. It increases your chances of getting a job, provides you with an opportunity to be successful your life will be less stressful, education is the key. Now lest look at the statistics Steve Jobs networth 7 billion R.I.P, Richard Branson networth 4.2 billion, Oprah Winfrey 2.7 billion, Mark Zuckenbury, Henry ford, Bill Gates. Looking at this individual what’s your conclusion. Either of them in being successful graduated from a higher learning institution, now some of you will protest like you know money is the only mediums in which you measure success, some of you will even huv the nerve to say I don’t do it for the money. So what you studying for, to work for a charity. Need more clarity let’s look at the statistics. Jesus, Muhammad, Socrates, Molcom X, Mother Teresa, spliesberg, Sharespeare, Muhammad Ali, Sean Carter, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, were either of these people unsuccessful or uneducated. All I’m saying is i ...
When we hear the word “greatest” a number of things come to mind. Some may think of sports and names like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Wayne Gretsky are conjured up. Others may think of a significant moments in history while some would say that something beyond the ordinary has occurred. Recently Governor Bentley used this term when referring to the just completed legislative session. Historians and publishers of dictionaries must be laughing out loud. This is not to say that nothing positive happened during the session, but perhaps the governor was caught up in the hubris of the “We Dare Defend Our Rights” (i.e. states rights) legislative agenda euphoria. So let’s briefly examine some of the highlights (or lowlights if you prefer) of the Governor’s greatest legislative session: The Omnibus Gun Bill passed which will allow employees to possess firearms in their locked vehicles at work even over the objection of their employer who owns the business property. The bill p ...

You know what idc if people make fun of me idc if u say i dont have what it takes to be the greatest because when im on T.V and im in the Hall Of Fame and you are on the stree begging for change and it doesn't just take talent do u think Muhammad Ali was born with one of the most deadly fists ever no he worked to be the best and do u think Michael Jordan could just magically dunk no he trained and trained just like Walter Peyton and Barry Sanders and Joe Damaggio and Babe Ruth they trained and trained till they were the best ~Sammy Alfuqha
Michael Jordan is one of the most intriguing athletes of the twentieth century, a sports icon like Babe Ruth but not a paragon of principal like Muhammad Ali. Jordan was a marketing maven who never capitalized on his potential to mobilize African American athletes. Had he said, "Jump," they would've jumped. Instead, he chose to remain publicly neutral in all matters political and racial. The essence of Jordan's legacy is what he accomplished; the tragedy is what he could have done. ~ William C. Rhoden, Forty Million Dollar Slaves
I'm jealous of anyone who has seen Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Tiger Woods, and Muhammad Ali compete live.

Whatever these men say is law and you can take it to the bank. Go forth and learn about the knowledge of self and your ancestors.

Ruby Bridges By Naja Bynum As Black History Month draws to a close; our race recognizes the most important people in our history. Every year, my mother gives me a project to work on. I never knew exactly why she wanted me to do it but now I do. I am so very grateful she gave this project to. Throughout Black History, the following individuals made their voice heard and impacted, that one can cause a ripple to create waves. George Washington Carver, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Rosa Parks, Bessie Smith, Jackie Joyner- Kersee, and Oprah Winfrey. Now I would love to talk about a young lady that made a great impact on the lives blacks in the south and bridges a gap for one state and the whole world. This also includes Ruby Bridges Hall. A woman―who at only at 6 years old in 1960―went to a white school and shaped our entire future in the process. It all started at the beginning of her birth; born in Mississippi where she grew up for four years on her farm. She was the oldest child of Ambon an . ...

Rodney Mullen is a genius, who should be known worldwide as a icon of sport. In the same bracket as people like a Muhammad Ali or a Michael Jordan and definitely should be as known as Tony Hawk and to be unknown to a lot of people out of the "X-Game" scene is just a joke. He should be on t shirts for what he has done for pop culture. In other words watch Bones Brigade documentary if you get a chance. Anyway, I'm going to bed. PEACE
"It’s crazy that I’m compared to athletes like Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt or Muhammad Ali. I don’t like comparisons. Who am I to compare myself to someone else? I do my job and when my career is over we’ll see how well I’ve done. The biggest critic of Messi is Messi. I know when I do things correctly and when I do them poorly.” Lionel Messi
A few interesting quotes: "The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent." -Arnold Schwarzenegger "The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital." -Joe Paterno "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." -Michael Jordan "It's the lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believe in myself." -Muhammad Ali "Winning is something that builds physically and mentally every day you train and every night that you dream." -Emmitt Smith "The only yardstick for success our society has is being a champion. No one remembers anything else." -John Madden "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enought; we must do." -Bruce Lee "It takes more than just a good-looking body. You've got to have the heart and soul to go with it." -Lee Haney "You miss 100% of the shots you never take." -Wayne Gretsky "I learned that if you want to make it bad enough, ...
Happy Birthday Champ.Yup still the greatest of all-time and still got it even at age 71. Muhammad Ali: a true sports hero.beat that Floyd Mayweather.a true sports villain.lol. To one of my top 3 main sports heroes of all-time besides Michael Jordan and The Rock. Happy B-day Muhammad Ali cuz you're still the true Champion of the World !
Last but not least Happy Birthday to "THE GREATEST" Muhammad Ali who turns 71 today. Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. Muhammad Ali was the greatest boxer of his generation, and with the exception of Sugar Ray Robinson pound for pound the greatest fighter ever. In my opinion Muhammad ALi is the second greatest athlete of the 20th century right behind Babe Ruth. After winning a gold medal in the 1960 OLympics, Ali at the time was the youngest heavyweight champion at 22 when he knocked out Sonny Liston. ALi was stripped of his title for his refusal to enter the Vietnam War, and he along with Jane Fonda and John Lennon became the voice of the anti-war movement in the 1960's. Ali came back to reclaim his title back two more times. Muhammad ALi was the first of his kind, there will never ever be another athlete like Muhammad ALi. Muhammad Ali transcended his sport like no other athlete. Ali inspired and influenced many people from Whitney Houston to B ...
You determine your own achievement, your own greatness. When you push yourself, life will push back. But if you can continue forward with the examples of Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Dwight D. Eisenhower in the forefront of the mind, you’ll make progress. Don’t let your or anyone else’s fears and doubts stifle your growth. Stay strong. Put the necessary blood, tears, and sweat into your goals.

What I've come to notice in my time at the academy of art. I may not be the most talented but thanks to my parents I'm the hardest working. The thought of letting them down keeps me going to be the best student to ever walk through the academy doors. You call it confidence I call it hard work. Because I know the work I put in is ten times the average student. The student who is okay with a c. A c grade that means you're okay by aau's standards. Good enough for them to use your money and put you into the next class. But an a grade means you're industry ready here. That's what I strive for. Someone who's industry ready but still goes to school because he knows he can improve. So you may not be the best but you can become the best. After all Michael Jordan wasn't the goat when he first picked up a ball, Muhammad Ali wasn't the legend when he first picked up gloves, and Carl Lewis wasn't the fastest when he first ran. But they all became icons. And that's what I aim to be everyday in the one true thing I love ...
Just saw a headline that was asking "Who is the next Steve Jobs?" While the man did change the modern world and all. and being called "the next" can be flattering. I have to ask why anyone would ever want to be the "next" anyone or anything? Steve Jobs was Steve Jobs because he did stuff via his own vision. There never will be another one, because if there was it would mean that they are following in his footsteps rather than invent a new path... as he did. Same thing applies to Muhammad Ali, Ronald Reagan, Vince Mcmahon, Ted Turner, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, Bill Gates and Shigeru Miyamoto. There will never be a "next" of any one of these people... because they are one of a kind people. Don't ever aim to be the "next" anybody. Be the first "you". That's my angle.
If pooping were a competitive event, I would be the Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan of pooping!
I declare this "Mt. Rushmore Week" First poll: Give me your Mt. Rushmore of sports icons. I say Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Muhammad Ali.
Slavery One of my friends just came from the USA and what he told me shocked me. He said he met some African-Americans who hated him because his ancestors in Africa are the ones who sold the African-Americans into slavery. This is unfair because all of us where not there. And what is more I feel God in His infinite wisdom has turned the presence of African-Americans into a blessing and have produced some of the greatest personalities in the world in all fields of human endeavor…I am thinking of late MJ, the greatest pop singer of all time, Muhammad Ali, Jimi Hendrix, Ophra, Michael Jordan, Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, the William sisters, TD Jakes, Tiger Woods, the list is endless. Proving that the black man given the right conditions can also excel beating the white man by far! This was God’s plan. If there were no African- Americans in the USA and all these were in Africa I don’t think they would have reached those heights. God usually turns our bad intentions into blessings. people keep searching for some complex formula to help understand why athletes like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Ray Lewis, Peyton Manning, Barry Sanders, Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Derek Jeter, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were better than everyone else at their sports. There is no scientific explanation for it. They not only believed they would be great-they knew they would be great. People just disregard it as they had the genetics to get there, but what most people fail to realize is that they all put their heart and soul into every single rep, set and practice-every single day for weeks, months and years. They broke through every mental barrier to get to where they wanted to be. That's what separates successful players from average ones. They don't accept average because they knew they would be legends
He’s been called the greatest athlete of all time. That’s a lofty claim when you consider competing for that informal title is Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. But Jim Thorpe, the Native American from the Sac and Fox lands of ...

I just hanged the "Impossible is Nothing" poster in my office today. Muhammad Ali epitomizes success. And I mean even today in his present condition. He's still fighting and overcoming his challenges. May Allah, always bless and keep the man for I love so much of what he stands for. I admire the man that he is and will always be. I am lo looking for a poster that is as equally success oriented/compelling and that with Michael Jordan as the feature spokesperson. Long live Muhammed Ali.
"What I will say is that no one will ever replace Michael Jordan. He is the most famous athlete of his time and perhaps with Muhammad Ali, of any time. There is going to be a void that no one player can fill." -- David Stern
Behind Muhammad Ali, Manny Pacquiao and Michael Jordan as my greatest athletes Kobe Bryant definately deserves to be at For that from a genuine fan/supporter I wish him a happy 34th Birthday... (i guess the presents came early)
Weekend triva. Who had their picture 18 times on the cover of Wheaties cereal? A Tiger Woods B Cal Ripken, Jr C Muhammad Ali D Michael Jordan
It's not fair for the other great athletes like Muhammad Ali, Oscar de la Hoya, Michael Jordan etc. who could only get one gold medal.
Had an intense discussion last night about who is the greatest sportsperson of all time. The Top 10 who made the list (not in order of importance) were: Carl Lewis, Jack Nicklaus, Usain Bolt, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Pele, Steffi Graf (who beat our Federer), Don Bradman (who beat out Tendulkar after a heated debate), Michael Phelps, and Muhammad Ali. Just missing the cut were Joe Montana and Nadia Comaneci. Winner by the most votes was Phelps, followed with a tie for Ali and Jordan with Steffi just missing the bronze. With a significant number of beers accompanying the discussion, it became quite interesting to say the least. Not sure I agreed with the result, though.
Usain Bolt: "I'm in the category of Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. But I'm not greater than Bob Marley"
Someone told me last night that my dreams are UNattainable. That I CAN'T accomplish my goals.Did you know; someone said the same thing to Michael Jordan, Sean Carter, Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Bruce Lee, Bob Marley and Muhammad Ali?
22 medals, 18 gold. 2 silvers, 2 bronzes. Michael Phelps, it has been an honor watching you swim. Some grew up watching Jim Brown, some Muhammad Ali, others Michael Jordan. I got to see Michael Phelps.
All great sports careers must come to an end eventually. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, and now Michael Phelps! Thank you for 12 years of historical Olympic moments!
Of course, Michael Jordan is then Muhammad Ali followed by Jack Johnson (believe it or not but Jack was the first black superstar), then Joe Louis and finally Hank Aaron. ;)
No matter what sport you play, if you dont know who Michael Jordan, Lou Gherig, Babe Ruth, Larry Bird, or Muhammad Ali is, just die.
Throughout my career i have met sports legends including Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King and Michael Jordan. I have been inspired by a blind triathlete as well as a deaf D1 baseball pitcher. I was with Derrick Rose the night he was drafted and experienced the night with him and his family. I have gone in a helicopter, rode in a racecar and walked down a mountain. Through my stories, I have boosted the confidence of children, including one that was autistic and enjoyed being recognized for his athletic accomplishments. Most people are motived to work hard by the glorious destination they see ahead. However, it's the experiences I have already had that drive me to push myself. I work to stay on the path that I am currently on because this entire journey has been an absolute dream come true.
Who will win hurdles: madonna or Michael Jackson and who will win the school board election: Muhammad Ali or George Clooney and who will win chess Michael Jordan or Harry Houdini
Roger Federer is one of those rare, preternatural athletes who appear to be exempt, at least in part, from certain physical laws. Good analogues here include Michael Jordan, who could not only jump inhumanly high but actually hang there a beat or two longer than gravity allows, and Muhammad Ali, who really could “float” across the canvas and land two or three jabs in the clock-time required for one. There are probably a half-dozen other examples since 1960. And Federer is of this type — a type that one could call genius, or mutant, or avatar. He is never hurried or off-balance. The approaching ball hangs, for him, a split-second longer than it ought to. His movements are lithe rather than athletic. Like Ali, Jordan, Maradona, and Gretzky, he seems both less and more substantial than the men he faces. Particularly in the all-white that Wimbledon enjoys getting away with still requiring, he looks like what he may well (I think) be: a creature whose body is both flesh and, somehow, light.
Great photo of Muhammad Ali with Howard Cosell posted earlier -- I remember watching with my dad ESPN's "Sports Century's 50 Greatest Athletes" and my dad without hesitation said Muhammad Ali. By the way, Michael Jordan was No. 1 and Ali was No. 2. I remember as a kid how we just had four TV channels (the ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates in Wichita and the PBS station in Wichita KPTS) and ABC "Wide World of Sports" used to show Ali's matches on tap. And Howard Cosell was annoying. But looking back, what a special relationship Cosell and Ali had -- Cosell was the first sports commentator to refer to Muhammad Ali as Muhammad Ali and he was in Ali's corner when Ali refused induction into the military because of his religious beliefs.
I've decided to get rid of some of my old sports memorabilia. If anyone is interested in Michael Jordan autographs, Muhammad Ali autographs, or a John Wooden autograph give me a shout.
"It's like you're looking at Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali. But not just on that point of them being great, it's just them having that natural talent for what they did. I was destined to produce music. There are things that people don't hear that I hear. Ask people who are really great at something. They see it in their heads before it happens." - Sean Combs
in your avi the posters include Muhammad Ali, Entourage, Shutter Island, and Michael Jordan...
They got the nerve to say somebody traveled against Parker and Ginobili?! Michael Jordan richer than Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, and Joe Montana combined.

Food For Thought : As with Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and other greats, it is hard to see them perform on the downside of their career. When they no longer can jump as high, run as fast, etc. We all pull so hard to see that person of old, but when the body shuts down from the years of wear and tear, the mind says there is still more greatness, but the body just no longer responds. Kobe Bryant is now 35 or 36 years old, he has been playing in the NBA for some 18 years. Kobe is not the Kobe of old, His reaction time is off, His legs are not giving him the lift and his speed just isnt there, I believe his mind is alert but his body can no longer go. I hope he can accept this and be willing to be the second option to Andrew Bynum.
People used to tell Einstein he was an *** People use to tell Picasso his art was stupid. People used to tell Michael Jordan he was terrible at basketball. People used to think Muhammad Ali was crazy for wanting to be a Boxer. So pardon me as i carry on going about doing what i wanna do. I will be putting out my mixtape in a few weeks, you can support it or ignore it.
In my father's era it was Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. In my era, it's Kobe Bryant and Floyd Mayweather.
Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, and Michael Jordan step aside to The Greatest Athlete of 20th Century.
Lebron, you gotta watch Anderson Silva. Anderson Silva is literally Muhammad Ali & Michael Jordan of MMA, LITERALLY AMAZING!
♥ ♥ ♥: Signed By A_United States Sailor Trayvon Martin died for a reason. His name will live on forever. May he rest in peace knowing that he made a difference in today’s youth and American Culture in all aspects of life. You are to me, just as great as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X/Little, Rosa Parks, Barrack Obama, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Muhammad Ali, Tupac, Lil Boosie, Corey Howell, Lil Wayne, J Cole, Kid Cudi, Drake, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, RG3, Tiger Woods, Chase Rice, Colt Ford, etc.. I lost my military I.D. and reported it the next day. With that said..one morning I was ordered to go get a military I.D. because my Senior Chief Petty Officer (2nd to Highest Enlisted Rank) didn’t sign my Chit for two weeks. He told me he would sign it when he got to it. This restricted me from going out to eat, have fun, go to the bank, grocery store, etc. He also told me I was the “only one” he could not figure out in his 22 plus years of service and that “He’s through ...
