British jihadist who posed with severed heads 'faked his own death'. A British jihadist who is believed to have faked his own death while fighting in Syria in an attempt to return home undetected has admitted terror charges. Imran Khawaja, 27, admitted preparing for acts of terrorism, attending a training camp and possessing firearms in a hearing last year, but reporting restrictions were in place until Tuesday. Khawaja, from Southall in West London, spent the first half of last year fighting alongside jihadists in Syria's civil war and at one point posted an image of himself holding a severed human head on social media. He left from Heathrow Airport in January last year, travelling to a training camp in Syria. Once there, he joined Rayat Al-Tawheed (Banner of God) - a group which became aligned with the Islamic State group, according to Britain's Metropolitan Police. "Khawaja is also seen in a disturbing video posted on social media which includes a bag of severed heads," said the Scotland Yard statement ...

(CNN) -- A eight-day search in Portugal near where Madeleine McCann went missing seven years ago has uncovered no new evidence, British police said Wednesday. London's Metropolitan Police -- also known as Scotland Yard -- are leading the hunt for Madeleine, who was a few weeks shy of her fourth birthday when she disappeared from her family's holiday apartment Praia da Luz, on Portugal's Algarve coast, in 2007. Scotland Yard said its officers had been working alongside Portuguese police and experts to search specific areas in the resort town. They had searched some 60,000 square meters of ground, including drains and derelict buildings, in what was "the largest deployment "ever undertaken by UK police overseas in a case of this type." "The decision to search the 'horse shoe' shaped piece of waste ground to the west of Praia da Luz and other sites was as a specific result of the UK's investigation work to date," police said in a statement Wednesday. "Forty-one ground anomalies were identified initially by b ...

Similar requests have been made for two other locations in Portugal.

One of those nagging questions that I finally remebered to google is how Scotland Yard got it's name. "The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard.[1] The Scotland Yard entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous."

Why your fingerprints may not be unique: says Home Office expert Mike Silverman Fingerprint evidence linking criminals to crime scenes has played a fundamental role in convictions in Britain since the first forensic laboratory was set up in Scotland Yard in 1901. But the basic assumption that everyone has a unique fingerprint from which they can be quickly identified through a computer database is flawed, an expert has claimed. Mike Silverman, who introduced the first automated fingerprint detection system to the Metropolitan Police, claims that human error, partial prints and false positives mean that fingerprints evidence is not as reliable as is widely believed. Nobody has yet proved that fingerprints are unique and families can share elements of the same pattern. And there are other problems, such as scanning fingerprints of the elderly as their skin loses elasticity and in rare conditions leaves some people with smooth, featureless fingertips. Mr Silverman, who was the Home Office’s first Forensic ...

The Nigeria Police FORCE The Nigeria Police Force, formerly part of the West African Frontier Force, formerly Glover's Hausas (freed slaves conscripted by Glover as a private army in his exploration of 'Niger area'. The Nigeria Police and Army both came from the same source hence their common mentality. The Hausa barracks in Lagos in 1885 was located on the current site of Lagos City Hall and Kings College and was moved to Obalende where it evolved into Force Headquarters and Dodan Barracks. The Story of Charles Manley In 1839, Richmond Council recruited their first policeman from Liverpool Police Force. His name was James Whiting who was paid one guinea a week to maintain law and order in Richmond. After two years both Whiting and his successor, Frank Galliers, gave up their positions. Galliers had been unable to cope with the influx of Irish navvies who had been brought into the Richmond area to assist in the construction of a new railway spur to connect Richmond with the Stockton to Darlington line. When the navvies were paid off in Richmond Market Place, there followed an orgy of drinking and fighting. Galliers resigned and in desperation Richmond pleaded for assistance from A Division of the Metropolitan Police in London. The Chief Commissioner sent one of his best men, Charles Manley. Charles had joined some 12 years before and was tall but of slender build. He was "Positive" in his Scotland Yard ideas. On arrival, he wounded local sentiment by his refusal to wear Richmond Police unifor ...

ALSO TODAY IN 1829 - Greater London’s Metropolitan Police went into action. There was much opposition to the act of Parliament that authorized the police force. Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel had requested the act (the police were called ‘Bobbies’ in honor of him). The Bobbies first official headquarters were at Scotland Yard; and Scotland Yard became the official name of the police force. 1920 - Radios for 10 bucks! There is "insufficient evidence" to prosecute former Liberal Democrat chief executive Lord Rennard over allegations of sexual touching, the Metropolitan Police have said. 'No action' over Lord Rennard sexual touching claims - The peer had been accused by female activists of inappropriate behaviour, which led to an internal party inquiry. Lord Rennard, who was also a key strategist and adviser to a succession of leaders, denied the allegations. The Lib Dems say they are continuing their own disciplinary investigation. A number of women accused the peer of abusing his position by inappropriately touching and propositioning them between 2003 and 2007. In February, Scotland Yard began looking into whether any criminal activity had taken place and Lord Rennard was questioned in June.

The hunt is on for the former Catholic Abbot of Ealing Abbey, Laurence Soper, who was leader of the attached St Benedict’s School and part time chaplain at Feltham Young Offender Institution. Following allegations by a former pupil, Soper was arrested and questioned by the Metropolitan Police in September 2010. He later skipped bail and vanished. A source close to the investigation said: ‘He knew he was about to be charged.’ Two former teachers at St Benedict’s have been jailed and five, including Soper, were named in Lord Carlile’s report into allegations of physical and sexual abuse of children over a 40 year period. A former worker also raised concerns about Soper’s time at Feltham Young Offender Institution between 1988 and 2000. Ealing Abbey has now confirmed that Soper was questioned by Police during this period. In the mid-Nineties, Scotland Yard investigated an alleged paedophile ring visiting boys there. By Yvonne Ridley People think I’m anti-police. I’m not … but I do despise bent coppers who think they are above the law.  And when it comes to the guardians of the law the main target of my criticism is usually the Metropolitan Police and with good reason. My first memories of their bad behaviour stem from the 1980s when I was working as a regional journalist. Coming from a coal mining community in the North, I will never forget how the “London Filth” , as they were referred to by strikers, waved their payslips and overtime bonuses at the pitmen on the picket lines during the Miners’ Strike of 1984. They goaded the heroic colliers, especially during the Battle of Orgreaves which is soon be the subject of an investigation into claims of fabricated and co-ordinated police evidence. A public inquiry will probably be too little, too late but like Hillsborough, the liars need to be exposed and justice needs to be delivered. But back to the reputation of the Met; during the Miners Strike not even t ...

DID YOU KNOW, ON THIS DAY 1975 "The shocking kidnapping and murder of Lesley Whittle." Lesley Whittle was murdered at the age of 17 in January 1975 by Donald Neilson. Dominating national headlines for 11 months, the investigation of her murder involved over 250 officers from Shropshire, Staffordshire and West Midlands police force and the Metropolitan Police. Whittle was kidnapped from her home in Highley, Shropshire, by Neilson, who by that time had committed over 400 burglaries and three fatal shootings. He was known to the British press as the Black Panther, due to his wearing a black balaclava during his Post Office raids. Neilson held Lesley Whittle in a drainage shaft of a reservoir at Bathpool Park in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. He had placed a hood over her head, left her naked, and tethered her to the side of the shaft by a wire noose. After what was later seen as a bungled police operation, including two failed attempts to engage with Neilson's demand for a ransom of £50,000, her body was found h ...

LONDON (AP) — A British court on Saturday denied bail to a colonel in the Nepalese army facing charges of torture allegedly committed during the Himalayan nation's civil war. Kumar Lama, 46, was arrested Thursday at a residential address in the English town of St. Leonards-on-Sea, about 70 miles (115 kilometers) southeast of London. He was later charged with intentionally "inflicting severe pain or suffering" on two individuals as a public official — or person acting in official capacity. Britain's Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to one incident that allegedly occurred between April 15 and May 1, 2005, and another that allegedly occurred between April 15 and Oct. 31, 2005 at the Gorusinghe Army Barracks in Nepal. Scotland Yard has said that the arrest did not take place at the request of Nepalese authorities. British authorities claim "universal jurisdiction" over serious offenses such as war crimes, torture, and hostage-taking, meaning such crimes can be prosecuted in Britain regardless o ...
Two men have been arrested by detectives investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal. A 53-year-old was held in Hampshire at around 8am and a 59-year-old in West London at around midday, both on suspicion of sexual offences. The allegations are not directly linked to Savile, the Metropolitan Police said. Scotland Yard is leading a national investigation into allegations against disgraced television presenter Savile and a number of other high-profile figures. They have separated the inquiry into three strands: claims against Savile, those involving Savile and others, and those involving others. The latest arrests fall under the "others" strand. So far, officers have questioned 10 people including former pop star Gary Glitter, comedian Freddie Starr and PR guru Max Clifford. Last month police said a total of 31 allegations of rape had been made against former Top of The Pops presenter Savile, who died in October 2011. Will update when I get further news Some 589 people have come forward with information re ...

Metropolitan Police's headquarters, Scotland Yard is up for scale. Is this bad news??
The British police is set to sell Scotland Yard in Central London. The building has been the home of the metropolitan police since 1967. Guess why they want to sell it. Simply to save cost. Contrast with Nigeria where everyday a new multi-billion naira multi-storey building springs up as headquarters of this and that ministry, parastatal or agency. Most times only 2-3 floors of such buildings are occupied, with the rest wasting. Note that the British have long sold Gatwick Airport to a Nigerian. If it was in the days of Ibori and Alams another Nigerian would have bought Scotland Yard. (It might still happen). The more important thing is that all over the world govts and their agencies are cutting costs. In Nigeria we are increasing costs without a commensurate increase in revenue yielding activities. How much revenue does the Nigerian police contribute? I suspect not much. But the police force is a veritable source of revenue, just like their foreign counterparts. But our fixation and lust after free oil ...

I for one am quite happy with constructions of the Sue/John type. Thoughts?

London tattoo ban targets police 10/17/12, 5:38 AM LONDON (AP) - David Beckham has covered much of his body with them, but you won't be finding Scotland Yard's finest sporting visible tattoos anymore. London's Metropolitan Police has banned its officers from wearing tattoos, saying they damage the professional image of Britain's top police force. Scotland Yard confirmed in a statement today it will no longer permit tattoos on the face or hands or one that appear above the collar line. It said all other tattoos must be covered. The force says officers who already have visible tattoos will be required to "register" those tattoos in writing to their managers by Nov. 12 or face disciplinary actions for gross misconduct. Scotland Yard previously had prohibited tattoos deemed offensive to religion or beliefs or that could be construed as violent or intimidating.

Scotland Yard say they have received complaints of alleged sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile stretching back four decades. The news comes after the NSPCC set up a hotline for people who believe they were abused by Mr Savile to contact them. The organisation says they recieved seventeen allegations of sexual abuse against Savile and 21 allegations against others. Officers say they now have 120 lines of inquiry from alleged victims, witnesses and third parties. Among the claims, police say they have recorded two allegations of rape and six allegations of indecent assault. The youngest alleged victim is 13 years old. Sky's crime correspondent, Martin Brunt, who attended a briefing by detectives at Scotland Yard, said: "This information relates to a joint assessment between Scotland Yard officers and the NSPCC. "The NSPCC say they have received about 40 calls so far to their hotline. They wanted it to be made clear that those 21 other allegations about people who are not Jimmy Savile, were not necessarily related ...
