Ben is working at B&N tonight, so I'm binging on theatre. I just watched the West End production of 'Merrily We Roll Along.' Next: reading 'Disgraced' by Ayad Akhtar. Then: prepping for my Voice and Movement class while listening to the cast recording of '...Great Comet of 1812.' Later: watching the new Marvin Hamlisch documentary on PBS. My cup runneth over.

We caught opening night of THE LAST FIVE YEARS at JCC Centerstage Saturday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The play details the five-year relationship between a successful writer (Carl DelBuono) and a struggling actress (Janine Mercandetti). The tale employs a unique narrative prism - his story runs chronologically and hers runs in reverse order, a bit like Sondheim's more famous Merrily We Roll Along. I'm still working out for myself the value of that device, but I loved the dynamic performances of Mercandetti and DelBuono, and especially their very impressive singing (It's a sing-thru musical -- LOTS of singing.) Ralph Meranto's direction -- which involves quite a bit of crossover movement -- is impressive, and the musical support is excellent.

Auditions for Merrily We Roll Along will be Sunday, September 29th starting at 6PM. There will also be a "make up" hour on Monday, September 30th from 9-10PM. If you want to audition but had conflicts with those times, please email me. Please prepare 16-32 bars of music from any song that you'd like. Stephen Sondheim is a very challenging composer, so feel free to show the Creative Team what you've got by auditioning with a Sondheim song (anything from Into The Woods, Sweeney Todd, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, Passion). Obviously your audition song does NOT have to be Sondheim (nor does it even have to be musical theatre), as long as you showcase your abilities. There will be a brief cold reading from the script of Merrily at auditions. The selected dialogue will be provided to you at auditions. To sign up for an audition time, click here:

From Jeremy Gerard's review roundup in Bloomberg News: Another highlight of the week was Sunday night’s 27th installment of Phil Geoffrey Bond’s “Sondheim Unplugged” series. The standout in a company of seasoned balladeers was Ann Morrison, the original Mary from 1981’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” and absent too long from local stages. Singing the risque “Ah, But Underneath” from “Follies” with palpable sexy energy and the devastating “Now You Know” from “Merrily,” Morrison was charmingly flexible vocally and physically. Someone give this woman her own showcase.
BUSY week! I've got The Weir, London Wall, Merrily We Roll Along, Othello and Eddie Izzard in less than a week!

Merrily We Roll Along transferred to West End, that it is what I call GOOD NEWS!. I am booking my ticket as soon as I have the money to pay for it, and that clashes with another dilemma, as I just have money to see one show: should I see Matilda or Merrily? :s
Last night at rehearsal for our "Reel Romance" show this Saturday, Kari and I decided that the original Broadway key for "Tonight" (from "West Side Story") was a tad high. So this morning I wrote it out one step lower (one step makes all the difference). "West Side Story"--what a score! Two musical geniuses of the highest order working together--Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. I'm personally fond of Bernstein's "Mass." And my favorite Sondheim musical is "Merrily We Roll Along" which lasted a paltry 16 performances on Broadway. (However, now it's recognized as a great musical.) Speaking of Sondheim, I loved Dianna Hughes' rendition of his "Sooner or Later" (sung solo with just the piano backing her) in her and Patty Stephens' recent show "Bawdy and Soul." I thought that was a highlight of the show.
The lovely Amy Ellen Richardson will be playing Mary Flynn at both shows of Merrily We Roll Along today. Do try to see her!!

Eddie Cantor (January 31, 1892 – October 10, 1964), born Edward Israel Iskowitz, was an American "illustrated song" performer, comedian, dancer, singer, actor and songwriter. Familiar to Broadway, radio, movie and early television audiences, this "Apostle of Pep" was regarded almost as a family member by millions because his top-rated radio shows revealed intimate stories and amusing anecdotes about his wife Ida and five daughters. Some of his hits include "Makin' Whoopee," "Ida," "If You Knew Susie," "Ma! He's Makin' Eyes at Me," "Margie" and "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree?)" He also wrote a few songs, including "Merrily We Roll Along," the Merrie Melodies Warner Bros. cartoon theme. His eye-rolling song-and-dance routines eventually led to his nickname, "Banjo Eyes." In 1933, the artist Frederick J. Garner caricatured Cantor with large round eyes resembling the drum-like pot of a banjo. Cantor's eyes became his trademark, often exaggerated in illustrations, and leadi ...

Lots and lots of delicious food at Borough Market, followed by two very different shows with some coincidentally similar themes around maintenance of artistic integrity in the face of pressure to sell-out: "Merrily We Roll Along" at Menier Chocolate Factory and "Scenes from an Execution" with Fiona Shaw at the National Theatre. Getting ready to head to Conor's band concert tonight. Even though he has decided he does not want to do band forever, I love hearing him play. Yep, you heard me correctly! WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO The following was published in the latest issue of The Dramatist (a journal for members of the Dramatists Guild). I tried to read it out loud to my wife, but couldn’t make it through the first paragraph without breaking down into tears. Life in the arts is tough but it’s all worth it to know how it affects people. My guess this is the tip of iceberg. First there was a note written by Stephen Sondheim: For those who wonder why we do what we do, I offer in evidence the following letter, written to the Cincinnati Playhouse by a man who won a pair of seats there in a promotional contest for John Doyle’s production of Merrily We Roll Along. Paste it on your bathroom mirror to read whenever you lose heart. -Stephen Sondheim To just say thank you for the tickets to last night’s play could not convey my gratitude for the evening we had. I am not good with words or expressing myself but feel I need to let you know what your generosity in donating the tickets meant to my wife and me ...
