Birthday Wishes to 2 legends of Jamaica. Gregory Isaacs & Buju Banton One has died a few years ago and one is incarcerated. Never the less they are two legends of the great music we call Banton (born Mark Anthony Myrie 15 July 1973) is a Jamaican dancehall, ragga, and reggae musician. Banton has recorded pop and dance songs, as well as songs dealing with sociopolitical topics. He released early dancehall singles in 1991, but came to prominence in 1992 with two albums, including Mr. Mention, which became the best-selling album in Jamaican history upon its release. Banton signed with major label Mercury Records and released Voice of Jamaica the following year. By the mid-1990s, Banton had converted to the Rastafari faith, and his music undertook a more spiritual tone. His 2010 album Before the Dawn won Best Reggae Album at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards. Banton gained international notoriety early on in his career for the anti *** track “Boom Bye Bye”, as well as for his 2009 arrest and conviction in the ...

On this day in music history: June 13, 1983 - “She Works Hard For The Money”, the eleventh studio album by Donna Summer is released. Produced by Michael Omartian, it is recorded at Lion’s Share Studios in Los Angeles, CA, Hollywood Sound Recorders in Hollywood, CA, and Rhema Studios in Beverly Hills, CA from Late 1982 - Early 1983. Following the release of her self-titled second album on Geffen Records (produced by Quincy Jones) issued after the label shelves her “I’m A Rainbow” album in 1981, Summer will work with producer Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Rod Stewart) on the follow up album. Having sued to get of out her contract with Casablanca Records in 1980, Summer will leave the label owing her former label one more album. “Money” will be released on to Polygram’s Mercury Records imprint (after Casablanca’s demise in early 1983), in order to fulfill her final contractual obligation to Casablanca. To everyone’s surprise, the album will be a major critical and commercial succ ...
Happy Birthday Brian McKnight (June 05, 1969). A (falsetto) singer, songwriter and musician able to play 8 different instruments, not to mention an arranger and producer, Buffalo, NY-born Brian Mcknight is to say the least a complete artist. His talent has allowed him to get 16 nominations at the Grammy Awards, although - just like rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg - he has never earned any. Originally signed on Mercury Records from 1990 until 1997, he has though scored his biggest success to date with the 1999 Motown released 'Back At One' album which would sell more than 3 million copies... Lola Falana Falana's father left Cuba to become a welder in the United States, where he met his wife. She spent most of her childhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the age of three she was dancing, and by age five she was singing in the church choir. By the time she was in junior high school, she was already dancing in nightclubs to which she was escorted by her mother. Pursuing a musical career became so important to Falana that, against her parents' wishes, she left Germantown High School a few months before graduation and moved to New York City. Her first dancing gig was at "Small's Paradise" in Harlem. Dinah Washington, the “Queen of Blues”, was influential in fostering Lola’s early career. While dancing in a nightclub, Falana was discovered by Sammy Davis Jr., who gave her a featured role in his 1964 Broadway musical Golden Boy. Her first single, "My Baby", was recorded for Mercury Records in 1965. Later in her career she recorded under Frank Sinatra's record label. In the late 1960s Falana ...

THE BLUES MAGOOS-CLICK VIEW MORE COMMENTS TO SEE CLIPS-5/22/2014 The band was formed in 1964 as "The Trenchcoats". The original members were Emil "Peppy" Thielhelm aka "Peppy" Castro (vocals and guitar), Dennis LePore (lead guitar), Ralph Scala (organ and vocals), Ron Gilbert (bass) and Jon Finnegan (drums). The band made a name for itself in various clubs in Greenwich Village. By 1966 the band had changed its name to fit in with the psychedelic vibe of the times - they first changed their name to the Bloos Magoos, which was then changed to the more familiar Blues Magoos. They also made some line-up changes, bringing in Mike Esposito as lead guitarist, and Geoff Daking as drummer. Like their name, the group's sound was of the psychedelic variety. They released the "So I'm Wrong and You Are Right" b/w "The People Had No Faces" single on Verve Records which did not gain the band much recognition. However, Mercury Records signed the band to a record deal in late 1966 and the group's debut album, Psychedelic ...
Just sent my friend Steve Katz back the manuscript for his fantastic memoir "IS STEVE KATZ A ROCK STAR?" which I have been helping him with. We've been at this for a while now and I'm feeling quite good about Steve's book and really jazzed to have helped in any way with a fantastic document of Greenwich Village at the height of the folk movement, let alone Steve's adventures producing Lou Reed, and beyond (Steve signed NRBQ to Mercury Records when he was a record company suit for a few minutes, and that right there is proof that this guy is righteous). Is it ironic that I also worked with Steve's former partner in Blood, Sweat & Tears and the Blues Project, Al Kooper (on the updated edition of his book BACK STAGE PASSES), who turned out to be one of the most dyspeptic and difficult people I have ever had to deal with, despite the fact that we are both pro wrestling fans and New Yawk Jews and should have been thick as thieves? Anyway, glad to be helping guard the legacy ... it's a gas to be close to the so ...
"THE RING OF FIRE" ~ Ray Charles STYLE!! Fact: The song was originally recorded by June's sister, Anita Carter, on her Mercury Records album Folk Songs Old and New (1963) as "(Love's) Ring of Fire", but, as we know, was popularized by Johnny & June Cash. Many other singers have sung it's tune!!
Marty Thau dies at 75. Best known for discovering the New York Dolls after stumbling into the NY Mercer Arts Center and catching a performance that made "almost everyone else in the world’s rock 'n' roll spotlight look tame." He committed everything to managing the band and signed them with Mercury Records for two albums. He also produced early demos for Blondie, the Ramones and others. NOTE: In 1972, Thau went on tour with the Dolls and was there when drummer Billy Murcia chocked to death on his own vomit after overdosing in London.

Richard Hayman, internationally known harmonica player and pops conductor, died in Manhattan on Wednesday at the age of 93. Hayman was the chief arranger for the Boston Pops Orchestra for more than 50 years, and was the St. Louis Symphony’s pops conductor from 1976 until 2002. Hayman was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and joined Borrah Minevitch’s Harmonica Rascals after graduating from high school. The Harmonica Rascals were one of the most popular vaudeville and movie acts during the 1930s and ‘40s. Hayman later moved to Hollywood and worked with harmonica bands like the Solidaires and as an orchestrator for MGM. In the 1950s he was A&R chief for Mercury Records and made several records, including some featuring his harmonica playing. In 1952 Hayman had a hit record with his harmonica version of the theme from the movie “Ruby Gentry.” He continued to chart into the 1960s with tunes like “Night Train.”
DIED TODAY = Richard Hayman (March 27, 1920 – February 5, 2014) was an American arranger, harmonica player, and conductor. Hayman started out as a player and arranger for the Borrah Minnevitch Harmonica Rascals before becoming an arranger for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios during the early 1940s. He did arrangements (often uncredited) for the MGM films Girl Crazy, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Thousands Cheer. From 1945-1950, he was musical director for the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra. In the 1950s and 60s, Hayman recorded a series of albums for Mercury Records. His 1957 outing "Havana In Hi-Fi" was first in the label's pop music stereo LP series (SR 60). Hayman is most famous for being the principal arranger at the Boston Pops Orchestra for over 30 years where his award-winning arrangements are still used today. He occasionally guest-conducted there, and when Arthur Fiedler had a time conflict with his job as pops conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, he recommended Hayman for the post.
Charles E Fach Jr. the former Vice President of Mercury Records in NY, and President of Smash records in Chicago was in my office with me for the last 15 years of his life. Charlie used to call me every morning at 7:00 am. I never had to set an alarm clock because he called me every morning for so many years. I'm sure my wife and family were wondering who worked for who all those years. He always said, "Hello kid." I have that saved on my answering machine to this day. Charlie who discovered some of the most famous names in all the world told me "Songs have a life of their own." Charlie was in the physical studio when Elvis recorded Heartbreak Hotel. He said, "Only record songs that you feel like could be the greatest song you'll ever sing on this earth." Never record a bunch of fillers and waste the public's time and energy. When I picked Charlie up from the VA Hospital and took him home for the last time, he said, "Robert, play me the songs you have produced in the studio lately." I played him a ...
REMEMBERING ARTHUR PRYSOCK! Today, January 2nd, we celebrate the life and times of Arthur Prysock (January 2, 1924 – June 21, 1997); an African-American jazz singer best known for his live shows and his baritone influenced by Billy Eckstine. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Prysock moved to Hartford, Connecticut to work in the aircraft industry during World War II. In 1944 bandleader Buddy Johnson signed him as a vocalist, and Prysock became a mainstay of the live performance circuits. Prysock sang on several of Johnson’s hits on Decca Records ("Jet My Love", 1947 and "I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone", 1948) and later on Mercury Records ("Because", 1950). His brother, Red Prysock, was a noted tenor sax player who appeared on many of Arthur's records. Prysock received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1995.
Happy birthday to Wadada Leo Smith, author Ira Gitler. We remember Fletcher Henderson and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson who received his nickname after a hair product with lye destroyed all his hair. He was born in Houston, Texas, anda a member of the horn section in Milton Larkin's orchestra, which he joined in the late 1930s. At various times, he sat next to Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, and Tom Archia, while other members of the band included Cedric Haywood and Wild Bill Davis. After exiting Larkin's employment in 1941, Vinson picked up a few vocal tricks while on tour with bluesman Big Bill Broonzy. He then moved to New York and joined the Cootie Williams Orchestra from 1942 to 1945, recording such tunes as "Cherry Red". Vinson struck out on his own in 1945, forming his own large band, signing with Mercury Records, and enjoying a double-sided hit in 1947 with his R&B chart-topper "Old Maid Boogie", and the song that would prove to be his signature number, "Kidney Stew Blues". Vinson's jazz leanings were p ...

The songs of Frank Loesser are really amazing. He was considered one of the most talented composers of his era. Here are some of the best songs that he wrote: "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from the M-G-M picture "Neptune's Daughter" (1949). This was originally a song which Loesser and his wife Lynn performed at parties for the private entertainment of friends. They also recorded the song for Mercury Records. Under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to supply a full score for Neptune's Daughter, Loesser included this song which he had created in 1944, originally for their housewarming party. I LOVE THIS SONG "Heart and Soul" (from the Paramount short subject A Song is Born) – lyrics. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE ALL SUNG THIS SONG. "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" from the Paramount picture Sweater Girl (1942), performed on screen by Betty Jane Rhodes IRVING BERLIN adored this song. Lesley Gore (née Lesley Sue Goldstein) was just a few weeks past her own 17th birthday when she performed one of the greatest teen-drama songs of all time on American Bandstand. Just three months earlier, she was an unsigned unknown performing anywhere she got the chance when Quincy Jones, then a staff producer with Mercury Records, saw and heard her in a Manhattan nightclub. In late February, Jones sat with Gore in her family's suburban living room and helped her select "It's My Party" from among hundreds of demos he'd brought for her to consider. Six weeks later, Gore's debut single was finished and pressed, and soon thereafter it was on its way to the top of the pop charts—an achievement reached in the week immediately following her Bandstand performance. Though she was later nominate ...

Kenny Rogers Personal life Kenneth Ray Rogers was born in Houston, Texas, in 1938, the fourth of eight children born to Lucille (née Hester; d. 1991), a nurse's assistant, and Edward Floyd Rogers (d. 1975), a carpenter. Rogers graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston. Career Early career His career began in the mid-1950s when he recorded with a rockabilly group called The Scholars, who had some success with a single called "Poor Little Doggie." Rogers was not the lead singer of the group and after two more singles they disbanded when their leader went solo. Now on his own, Kenneth Rogers (as he was billed then) followed the breakup with his own single, a minor solo hit called "That Crazy Feeling" (1958). After sales slowed down, Rogers joined a jazz group called The Bobby Doyle Trio, who got a lot of work in clubs thanks to a reasonable fan following and also recorded for Columbia Records. The group disbanded in 1965, and a 1966 jazzy rock single Rogers recorded for Mercury Records ...

On this day (Feb. 7) in 1966: college student Paul Williams launched 'Crawdaddy!', the first national magazine dedicated to rock music criticism. Preceding both 'Rolling Stone' and 'Creem', 'Crawdaddy!' was the US pioneer of rock journalism & the training ground for many writers just finding the language to describe rock and roll, which was only then beginning to be written about as studiously as folk music and jazz. The magazine spawned the career of many music journalists who were, as Lenny Kaye put it, "trying to create writing as musical as the subject they wrote about." Early contributing writers included Jon Landau, Sandy Pearlman, Richard Meltzer and Peter Knobler. Williams named 'Crawdaddy! for the club in London, England where the Rolling Stones played their first gig. He left it two years later and went on to write 25 books about music and other subjects. He became a leading authority on the music of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, and Neil Young, and also worked in A&R for Mercury Records, notoriously ...

Reba Nell McEntire (born March 28, 1955) American country music artist and actress. She began her career in the music industry as a high school student singing in the Kiowa High School band, on local radio shows with her siblings, and at rodeos. While a sophomore in college, she performed the National Anthem at the National Rodeo in Oklahoma City and caught the attention of country artist Red Steagall. He brought her to Nashville, Tennessee, where she signed a contract with Mercury Records a year later in 1975. She released her first solo album in 1977 and released five additional studio albums under the label until 1983. Signing with MCA Nashville Records, McEntire took creative control over her second MCA album, My Kind of Country (1984), which had a more traditional country sound and produced two number one singles: "How Blue" and "Somebody Should Leave". The album brought her breakthrough success, bringing her a series of successful albums and number one singles in the 1980s and 1990s. McEntire has si ...

ALBUMS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT IN 2013! Mark Owen Spring 2013 will see the Take That member release his fourth solo album, he is still releasing the LP through his own label but this time also has the support and financial backing from Mercury Records which should lead to more promotional appearance and marketing around its release. Although I don't believe his solo work will every be as popular as Take That's I would like to see the album getting some critical acclaim His previous solo albums have been grossly over-looked as Mark takes a more "Neil Young" approach to writing - laying his soul bare. With the resurgence of the "Take That" brand interest will be peaked in Owen's solo project and it will be one to watch.

For all of those parents who have made up their mind to vaccinate for whatever reason here are some things you can do to reduce the risk of adverse reactions although I do not recommend vaccinating. if you are going to vaccinate these are some things you can do your child should be examined before every vaccination to make sure he or she is in good health and especially does not have a fever. The results of the examination should be noted in your child's medical record. ask your doctor which vaccine your child will get at her next visit and request the vaccine information statement information and the vaccine package insert so you will have time to learn about the vaccine before it is given. Tell your doctor if your child has been ill recently or if anyone in the child's family is currently ill. Evidence indicates that individuals who have a viral or bacterial infection may not amount an adequate antibody response to the vaccine plus they are at increase risk of having adverse reactions. Before you go to ...

As a separate discipline, chemistry was virtually non-existent for a long period. Alchemy was practically the sole constituent of this branch till the end of the medieval era of history. There are nonetheless mentions in other texts of the renowned 'chemists' such as Patanjali, Bhavyadattadeva, Vyadi, Svachhanda, Damodara, Vasudeva, Charaka, Susruta, Harita and Vagabhatta. In addition, there were the Jainacharyas - Nagarjuna, Jinadatta Suri, and Padalipta Suri. Alchemy was the search for gold through the base metal lead. It was an obsessive quest the world over, and mercury was the main player in the processes that were as mystical as they were scientific. Since the second century AD, alchemists had developed code names for the metals, minerals and gemstones. Jain alchemy records such as the Svarna-Rupya-Siddhi-Sastra by Jinadatta Suri reveal some - oDhammo was mercury (also known as purdah), oMamgalam referred to gold ( also called hemah), oUkkittham denoted Nepalese copper (Nepaladesham tamram), oAhimsa ...

Patti Page version of 'Old Cape Cod' According to Patti Page, she became aware of "Old Cape Cod" when Claire Rothrock approached her with it at a Boston nightclub where Page was performing. Page says of the song: "I just fell in love with it" and as a B-side was still required for Page's scheduled single release "Wondering" Page recorded "Old Cape Cod" to be that B-side, recording the track in a day trip to New York City and returning to Boston in time for that evening's nightclub performance. The "Wondering"/"Old Cape Cod" single was released by Mercury Records as catalog number 71101. Both tracks debuted on the Billboard magazine charts dated June 3 1957. 51 years ago: Singer Ray Stevens will never forget January 2, 1962. That was the day he moved from his Georgia home to Nashville, Tennessee, upon the invitation of Mercury Records producer and talent promoter Shelby Singleton, who had signed Ray to a recording contract in 1961, when Ray was in his junior year in college at Georgia State University. Ray told us about it for our book "Where Have All the Pop Stars Gone? -- Volume 2." Singleton, who was head of the Mercury Records A&R (artists and repertoire) department in Nashville, subsequently asked Stevens to work in session production for the label. When Shelby first extended his offer, Ray asked, "How much does the job pay?" Shelby replied, "$50 per week." Ray responded, "I can't live on $50 a week." Singleton said, "I'll let you play on all the sessions, too." Ray responded, "I'll be there."

Ralph Marterie (24 Dec 1914 - 10 Oct 1978) big-band leader born in Acerra (near Naples), Italy. Marterie first played professionally at age 14 in Chicago. In the 1940s, he played trumpet for various bands. His first job as a bandleader was courtesy of the US Navy during World War 2. He was then hired by the ABC Radio network, and the reputation built from these broadcasts led to a recording contract with Mercury Records. His highest success in the U.S. charts was a cover of "Skokiaan" in 1954. In 1953 he recorded a version of Bill Haley's "Crazy, Man, Crazy", which is generally regarded as the first rock and roll song. His version of "Crazy, Man, Crazy" reached on the Billboard jockey chart and on Cashbox in June, 1953. His recordings of "Pretend" and "Caravan" also made the Top 10. "Caravan" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. In 1957, he hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Tricky", and in 1957 he hit with "Shish-Kebab". "I don't want it all/Honey, I just want a little bit ..." On the occasion of Jerry Lee Lewis' 77th birthday, here's one of my all-time favorite "Killer Cuts" -- the Ferriday Fireball's propulsive, high-octane cover of Roscoe Gordon's sly, suggestive rhythm-and-blues standard "Just a Little Bit." Produced by Huey Meaux, this inspired rock 'n' roll recording -- featured on Jerry Lee's electrifying Mercury Records album SOUTHERN ROOTS: BACK HOME TO MEMPHIS (1973) -- united the Killer with an all-star studio lineup made up of the MGs (Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson Jr.), Tony Joe White, Mark Lindsay (of Paul Revere and the Raiders), Jerry Lee's longtime band leader Kenny Lovelace, James Hooker of the Amazing Rhythm Aces, the Memphis Horns and the Sugar Sweets, plus the Killer's old friend and former Sun Records label mate, Carl Perkins. Happy Birthday to the Last Man Standing -- Live Forever, Killer!
This is really random but. THE STORY OF THE NEON TREES -Formed initially by neighbors Tyler Glenn (vocals, keyboards) and Chris Allen (guitar, vocals) the band made its first home in Provo, eventually adding Branden Campbell (bass guitar, vocals) and Elaine Bradley (drums, percussion, vocals) to the lineup. David Charles also plays with the band as touring guitarist. They first started playing under the name Neon Trees in late 2005 with five original members, Tyler Glenn and Chris Allen from California, and three veterans of the Utah music scene, bass player Mike Liechty, drummer Jason Gibbons and keyboardist Nathan Evans. The band's name originates from the lighted trees on the In-N-Out Burger signs, which inspired Tyler Glenn. In a strange twist of fate, it was later learned that Branden Campbell's father, Steve Campbell, installed the exact neon trees in the In-N-Out that inspired Glenn while working for a sign company out of Las Vegas. The band is well-known throughout Provo and Salt Lake City, ...
Randy Bachman was born on Sep 27, 1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The career of Bob James is long, varied and continues to evolve at every turn. From his first days of piano recital in Marshall, Missouri to his own trio while at the University of Michigan to New York City and beyond, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, Bob recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that year for Mercury Records. 36 more solo albums would follow through four decades; that number is just to date and does not include his Grammy Award winning collaboration projects. Although he was to record another trio album, Explosions, for ESP (1964), it was not until Bob met up with Creed Taylor in New York that his composing, arranging and recording career really took off. After working on albums for CTI artists like Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr. and many others, Bob finally recorded his own album, One. This introduced his music to a bigger audience and launched a lifelong career of reco ...

Well this excites me. Arcade Fire to release new album.
Could it be? Arcade Fire coming out with a new album!?
I know :( its something to do with 'Mercury Records' in the UK wanting to play it on the radio first :(
Understand me on what Mercury Records are trying to do?
Basically what Mercury Records want is lots of people buying the new single, instead of people buying it at different times as they're new
Mercury Records are going to put WANEGBT on radio and then release it in October. :)
Mercury Records probably just wants to make TS as big in the UK as she is in the USA.
My anger over Mercury Records is over, I love you.
The album everyone should own from one of our most precious artists. "The Remedy" is available now. Order from: also featured on this morning's Breakfast programme - chatting and playing a live version of "Glory Days".
Taylor, you should take your flawless self to Mercury Records and demand it is released in the UK? They can't say no to you!

What a great surprise it was to hear from Sir Mack (Bonnie) Rice tonight! As you might know, Mack was an original member of the seminal Detroit vocal group, The Falcons. As a songwriter, he wrote "Respect Yourself" for the Staple Singers, "Mustang Sally" which he personally recorded before Wilson Pickett, and also "Cheaper to Keep Her" for Johnnie Taylor as recordered on the STAX label. As a recording artist he had singles on LUPINE RECORDS, STAX RECORDS, Capitol Records, BLUE ROCK/MERCURY RECORDS among others. And that is just the tip of the iceberg as the old axiom goes. My friend Tav Falco also recorded a slew of Mack's songs, including "Ditch Diggin' and "Do the Robot". After a really lousy day, it was so nice to hear from Mack!
Scott Walker, born Noel Scott Engel, walked to the scene in early 1960’s as a brotherly part of The Walker Brothers, which were formed in California under the guiding hand of Jack Nitzsche and which were signed by Mercury Records in the States in 1965. Afterwards, The Walker Brothers moved to the UK...
Thank you Mercury Records UK, you have now made a lot of people hate living in the UK and undid the sense of pride the Olympics gave us.
