Ideas for Post & Ante Natal Care Supplementation recommended for pre-conceptual &pregnant women The need for extra nutrients before, during and after pregnancy to help support the health of both the fetus and the mother is becoming increasingly important due to the reduced nutrient content of our modern diet. It has long been recognized that a deficiency in Folic Acid can increase the likelihood of developing a congenital disorder. A large trial set up by the Medical Research Council backed this up quite dramatically. Women should take 400mg of folic acid - if possible from conception until 12 weeks pregnant. Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids from fish are vital for the formation of new tissues particularly the development of the brain, nervous system and retina with research showing enhanced effects in IQ and learning. Suggested Supplementation: Arctic Sea, Absorbent C, B12 Plus Folic Acid, Nature- Min and Forever Probiotic. For more information on supplements during pregnancy see Aloe and Supplements flyer ...

A businessman appointed by David Cameron to head a multibillion-pound quango has been forced to step down after it was disclosed that he was bankrupt. A government spokesman said Tony Caplin, a former Conservative party chief operating officer, had resigned as chairman of the Public Works Loans Board (PWLB), which is responsible for £60bn of loans in infrastructure projects. Caplin – who has also served as chairman of stockbrokers Panmure Gordon, where Cameron's father, Ian, was a partner, and as non-executive director of biotech company Vaccinogen – has also left his post on the Medical Research Council. A government spokesman said: "Tony Caplin was appointed to a number of public bodies by the Labour party." Well yes. Before he was made bankrupt. conservativehome.blogs.com reckon Caplin should be made a Lord. One reader says "Tony Caplin is a business turnaround expert, well known in the City."

OUTRAGEOUS - AUSTRALIA DECLARES HOMEOPATHY USELESS!!! WAKE UP AUSSIES...YOUR HEALTH FREEDOMS ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY!! This is another reminder we live in real danger; they want our medicine stopped. Now Australia finds homeopathy "useless"; fortunately many other nations still consider homeopathy safe and effective. Of course our right to practice real advanced medicine requires constant nurturing or it will be gone. Arizona still has the important Homeopathic College and our invaluable Homeopathic Licensing Board, without which our practices will be closed down. All other medical practices are becoming increasingly hopelessly constrained by rules and regulations and low reimbursement rates that will drive many to stop practicing in the near future. We all know that much of "allopathic" medicine really is not "proven" to be either safe or effective. Still, they get away with nearly bankrupting many families and contributing to their ultimate premature demise; since even JAMA admits that legally prescrib ...

Statins Beneficial to Bronchiectasis Patients in Clinical Trial1 Bronchiectasis Patients suffering from the disabling inflammatory lung condition known as bronchiectasis may soon have a new treatment. Statins, drugs commonly prescribed to patients with high cholesterol to prevent heart attacks, were investigated by researchers at the University of Edinburgh to treat 30 individuals with clinically significant bronchiectasis. The research team, led by principal investigator Adam Hill, MD, was interested in the reported anti-inflammatory effects of statins and specifically chose atorvastatin for its low side-effect profile despite its potency. According to the original clinical trial record, the investigators hypothesized that atorvastatin could improve bronchiectasis patients’ symptoms of cough, bacterial chest infections, and phlegm production. To test this hypothesis, 60 patients were randomized to high-dose atorvastatin (80 mg) or placebo to be taken daily for 6 months. After the six month period, the ...

Long way to gone before we're a decent society By Imraan Buccus If we were without prejudice, every murder in Gugulethu would get the same attention as Anni Dewani’s death. But that is a world apart from the reality of our society, writes Imraan Buccus. More women are killed by their partners in South Africa than in most other countries in the world. A recent Medical Research Council (MRC) study found that one in every two women killed by a known perpetrator dies by an intimate partner’s hand. This is no doubt a worrying statistic. So, as the world focuses its attention on Oscar Pistorius, I have chosen to focus on Shrien Dewani, the man who allegedly murdered his wife while on honeymoon in Cape Town a few years ago. Why on Dewani now, you may ask. Well, several reasons. Pistorius already enjoys overwhelming media attention and I think Dewani is likely to get similar attention in the coming weeks, if he is extradited to South Africa to face a trial here. And the Dewani case has race, class and gender ...

Yoghurt slashes diabetes risk: Daily pot can reduce chance of developing Type 2 by a quarter, claims researchers Eating a pot of yoghurt a day may help keep diabetes at bay, claim researchers. Regular consumption of yoghurt cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than a quarter, according to a new study. Similar health benefits come from other low-fat fermented dairy foods, such as fromage frais and cottage cheese. Taken together, eating modest amounts of yoghurt and low-fat cheeses reduced the chances of becoming diabetic by 24 per cent over an 11-year period. The greatest gain came from just 4.5 standard 125g pots of yoghurt a week, which resulted in a 28 per cent cut in risk of diabetes. Scientists at Cambridge University said it was the first study of its kind, where dietary habits were recorded in advance to determine whether they could affect diabetes risk. Lead scientist Dr Nita Forouhi, from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge University, said 'This researc ...
Julia Bell (January 28, 1879 – April 26, 1979) was a pioneering English human geneticist. She attended Girton College in Cambridge and took the Mathematical Tripos exam in 1901. But because women could not officially receive degrees from Oxford or Cambridge, she was awarded a master's degree at Trinity College, Dublin for her work investigating solar parallax at Cambridge Observatory. In 1908, she moved to University College London and obtained a position there as an assistant in statistics. Her mentor was Karl Pearson (1857–1936), one of the founders of modern statistics, who prompted her to change to medicine in 1914. She studied at the London School of Medicine for Women (Royal Free Hospital). She qualified in 1922 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1938. Working as a member of the permanent staff of the Medical Research Council at the Galton Laboratory, University College, Julia Bell did pioneering work in documenting the familial nature of many diseases. Picture: Stuart McEvoy Source: News Limited THE controversy over wind farms is set to flare again with the Abbott government preparing to commission fresh research on the impact the giant turbines have on nearby residents. The National Health and Medical Research Council - which only three years ago found no evidence of adverse health effects, but a need for ongoing study - has again been tasked with responding to community concerns and will soon make a targeted call for new research. Almost a year before its election victory, the Coalition seized on the disquiet over wind farms and promised to examine the renewable energy projects more carefully should it win government, if not through NHMRC research then through a specially appointed independent panel. Johannesburg - African countries have some of the highest levels of physical and sexual violence against women in the world, a report has found. About 45.6 percent of women in Africa experienced physical and sexual violence, compared to 35 percent globally, according tothe report. The research was a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the SA Medical Research Council (MRC). It revealed that globally, women who experienced violence with their intimate or non-partners were twice as likely to be depressed, have alcohol related problems, and have HIV and a sexually transmitted diseases. Other health problems linked to violence wereunwanted pregnancies, abortion and low birth-weight babies. The report found that 38 percent of women killed globally were murdered by their intimate partners. “The results are deeply concerning and force each of us to sit up and take notice,” said MRCpresident Prof Salim Abdool Karim. “The evidence i ...

From a fan: Hi I was wondering if you could post a question out there for me I am doing some research into what it means to call oneself a 'paramedic'. It is a word that can be thrown around casually by anyone who has first aid skills right up to a critical / intensive care qualifications. I have found though l, the higher the qualification the less inclined a person is to say what they are. As Australia is on the brink of bringing in registration, which will acknowledge our profession, I was wondering what general consensus is of what it means to call yourself a paramedic. Thank you

Dear followers of Lincoln Professional Firefighters. We are here to let the people of Lincoln know that your Firefighters want only the best for you. There was a decision made by city council last night on changing our ways of staffing. They decided to go from 3 person engine companies to 2 person engine companies. They did this to open the McBean station. This idea was not brought to our attention to be discussed as a department and implemented without input from the people that are actually on the engines running the calls. We do not support this plan and do not support how this was brought upon us. This plan can compromise our safety and quality of service and care for you. We agree that the 3rd station needs to open, but it needs to be done right with staffing of 3 personnel. Our stance is two engines with 3 would be more effective than 3 stations with 2. We know this posting might create discussion, some agreeing, some not. Feel free to ask questions. If this turns into a heavy topic of d ...

Polio vaccination and Northern pseudo-intellectuals I cannot claim to be an ‘expert’ as is common these days. But, I consider myself a student of medicine, public health, infectious diseases and public policy. I studied Medicine in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (85-90). I worked in Kaduna and Kano before I proceeded to do clinical research at the Medical Research Council in The Gambia. I was opportune to specialize in Internal Medicine and sub-specialty of Infectious Diseases from two universities in the United States. After two other academic degrees, I became involved in the global public health arena for eight years with work on public health in more than 10 countries across three continents before returning to Nigeria in 2008, at the invitation of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, to lead the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) which drives the polio eradication programme along with other basic health matters. In 2009, Duke University Global Health Institute appointed ...

Zuma speaks on Health (14.02.2013) - with thanks to Health-e News Alerts received today, 21 February 2013 President Zuma discussed a range of health issues in his State of the Nation Address, specifically National Health Insurance, TB and lifestyle diseases. Read the part of his speech dealing with health here. Honourable Members, Five years ago, South Africa had such a low life expectancy that experts suggested that by 2015, our life expectancy would have been exactly where it was in 1955. It was with good reason that we were delighted when late last year, studies from the Medical Research Council, the Lancet medical journal and others began reporting a dramatic increase in life expectancy from an average baseline of 56 years in 2009 to 60 years in 2011. These reports also noted significant decreases in infant and under five mortality. Increased life expectancy is a key to the country's development. People are returning to work, they are being productive, economically and socially. The family structure . ...
A leaked draft report by the Medical Research Council has suggested that the national department of transport under-reported road fatalities by nearly 20 percent in 2009. The report, titled “The Injury Mortality Survey”, was prepared for the national and provincial departments of health. Principal researcher Richard Matzopoulos headed a team of nine researchers. They used post-mortems, police reports and hospital records to gather the data. Its stated aim was to establish the “cause-specific incidence of fatal injury” for the 2009 calendar year. Homicide and road traffic fatalities accounted for the majority of cases, and the incidence of both were “considerably higher than in other countries”. With regard to road traffic fatalities, the researchers noted that their data was at odds with statistics published by the department of transport for the same year. The department employs the Road Traffic Management Corporation, which says its mission is improving “law compliance and enhanced road sa ...
18/02/2013   Media Advisory   Reeva Steenkamp's death reveals an existing culture of violence   The Gandhi Development Trust is saddened by the alleged murder of model Reeva Steenkamp by gold medalist paralympian, Oscar Pistorius. Steenkamp's death by the hands of her boyfriend has reinforced the unfortunate fact that South Africa is battling with the deep-rooted culture of violence. This culture exists beyond race, religion, culture or social status. What however is of concern to the Gandhi Development Trust is the fact that possession of arms such as a gun lead to these kinds of irreversible consequences. Whether shot by mistake or purposefully, the possession of arms makes it fatal and final. No amount of grief and remorse can change the situation. Gandhi Development Trust therefore calls on South Africans to help us and other like minded organizations to campaign for a gun-free South Africa. Furthermore according to a report released last year by the Medical Research Council , 56 percent of fema .. ...
La Dolce Fitter Fat Tony may not be into the wholegrain racket, but his name is a clue as to the consequences of that. Wholegrains are low in saturated fat and help regulate your blood sugar level, and so control your bodyweight. Plus, they also promote both digestive and heart health. Currently a third of Brits don’t eat any wholegrains at all, according to the Medical Research Council, but a simple pasta switch effortlessly sneaks them into your diet. Whacking the meat and bringing in the veggie filling is another serious energy-saver, with courgettes clocking a mere 13 calories per handful. They’re also a prime source of potassium. The mineral is key to helping your muscles contract, so is therefore crucial for powering gut-busting exercise. Even if it’s only pulling the cork from that bottle of Barolo. the Medical Research Council estimates that up to 3,600 rapes happen daily in this nation of close to 52 million people. This should not become the norm in South Africa. It affects all of us.
An open letter to my fellow South Africans: I am ready. Are you? By Jay Naidoo 'Every 4 minutes a person is raped in SA,' scream the headlines. 'One third of SA men admit to having raped,' says our Medical Research Council. The consequence: the body of 17-year-old Anene Booysen lies lifeless. Her mutilated and brutalised body has given up hope on us as South Africans. It’s a mournful reminder of our national shame – the violation and abuse of our Mothers, Sisters and Daughters, the destruction of our humanity. Tomorrow it could be Your Mother, Your Wife, Your Sister or Your Daughter. Sexual violence knows no race, religion, status or class. It affects us All. The question we all ask, “When are we going to confront the horror of sexual violence that leaves a bloody stain on our social fabric?” As men we need to stand up and take a stand. We need to stop abusing, raping and hurting our women. The solution lies in us, men Have we forgotten that it is from the womb of our Mothers that we experienced . ...
A cannabis plant extract provides pain relief for patients after major surgery such as knee replacements, a study by Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council has shown.
South Africans received a horrifying measure of just how bad their country's rape crisis is with the release this week of a study in which more than a quarter of men admitted to having raped, and 46% of those said that they had raped more than once. The study, conducted by South Africa's Medical Research Council, reveals a deeply rooted culture of violence against women, in which men rape in order to feel powerful, and do so with impunity, believing that their superiority entitles them to vent their frustrations on women and children. The men most likely to rape, the researchers found, were not the poorest, but those who had attained some level of education and income. Researchers interviewed 1,738 men of all race groups, in both urban and rural settings in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, provinces marked by high rates of AIDS and poverty, and the men answered questions about rape and HIV using small handheld computers in order to guarantee anonymity. Of those admitting rape, 73% said that they had co ...

Gold***   *Professor of Surgery, McGill University, and Career Investigator of the Medical Research Council of Canada, **Director, Experimental Therapeutics, Department of Oncology, McGill University, ***Chairman, Department of Medicine, McGill University, and Physician-in-Chief, The Montreal General Hospital. ABSTRACT – Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that dietary milk products may exert an inhibitory effect on the development of several types of tumors. Some recent experiments in rodents indicate that the antitumor activity of the dairy products is in the protein fraction and more specifically in the whey protein component of milk. We and others have demonstrated that whey protein diets result in increased glutathione (GSH) concentration in a number of tissues, and that some of the beneficial effects of whey protein intake are abrogated by inhibition of GSH synthesis. Whey protein is particularly rich in substrates for . ...

“We are greatly concerned at the lack of Government investment in dementia research. In 2011-12, the National Health and Medical Research Council allocated only $24 million for dementia research, compared with $159.2 million for cancer research, $92.4 million for cardiovascular disease research and $71.2 million for diabetes research. “In the past 10 years, the Council has awarded only 56 grants, scholarships and fellowships to new dementia researchers. In comparison the number of grants for cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes were around 700, 500 and 250 respectively,” Ms Buttrose said. “WITH DEMENTIA ALREADY THE THIRD LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN AUSTRALIA, it is imperative that the Government increases its investment in research to $200 million over the next five years.
