Media Release: Tzedek calls on The Jewish Press to apologise and take immediate action Tzedek, the Australia-based advocacy and support group for Jewish victims/survivors of child sexual abuse, is outraged by a recent media article published by The Jewish Press entitled 'Jewish Teacher Charged with Molestation and Fired on Dubious Grounds'. In an opinion piece presented as a news story, journalist Yori Yanover repeatedly attempts to discredit the case. When referencing the broad allegations of abuse, Yanover writes “If it was happening”, insinuating that the allegations are false. In reference to the more specific allegations, Yanover writes “In other words, the arrest was made based on the testimony of a 12-year-old babysitter’s hearsay from a 6- and a 7-year-old”, further suggesting that the allegations were merely based on rumour. In his crude attempt to place doubt in the minds of his readers, Yanover claims, “I’ve been in this business a few years, and when it smells, I can sense it”. ...
5/14/13 Media Release - for immediate release Stony Point becomes first town to adopt Rockland County resolution for Issues Conference on United Water's proposed Haverstraw Water Supply Project At its regular meeting on Tuesday night, the Town of Stony Point town board unanimously adopted a resolution that the State of New York grant Rockland County an Issues Conference for the proposed Haverstraw Water Supply Project so that disputed issues of need and real costs can be more independently examined on behalf of county residents. The resolution refers to an independent economic study by EcoNorthwest, a firm that was retained by the Rockland County Water Coalition to examine the financial data and real costs of the proposed desalination plant. The EcoNorthwest study, which is highly critical of United Water's financial data, found it to be lacking in how data had been gathered, organized, documented and presented. The report states that there is "almost complete lack of transparency and documentation regard ...

RETIRED 4-STAR ADMIRAL JAMES LYONS CLAIMS Obama intentionally conspired with America’s enemies to stage a bogus attack and the kidnapping of an American ambassador so he could “negotiate” the release of a “hostage” and bolster his mediocre approval ratings just prior to the election! The Washington Examiner, quoting Lyons, writes: “the attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi… was the result of a bungled abduction attempt…. the first stage of an international prisoner exchange… that would have ensured the release of Omar Abdel Rahman, the ‘Blind Sheik’…” But something went horribly wrong with Obama’s “October Surprise.” Although the Obama Administration intentionally gutted security at the consulate prior to the staged kidnapping, former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty disobeyed direct orders to stand down, saved American lives, single-handedly killed scores of attackers…and the attackers, believing that Obama had betrayed them, tortured Ambassador Chris Stev ...

Media Release 30-Apr-13 ADDRESS ERRORS ELIMINATED Millions of dollars are lost due to inaccurate data entry in loan processing. Address inaccuracies are among the most common and frustrating. Incorrect address entry is “a stone in the shoe of lenders” declares Connective principle, Glen Lees. “Around 6,000 loan applications are processed by our brokers each month,” says Lees. “On each loan application there is at least one address that has to be entered, probably closer to three or four if you include solicitors and so on. “This may seem like a minor matter but thousands upon thousands of dollars ride on getting every bit of data correct the first time.” Now, there is no excuse for address errors in the online application process. The NextGen.Net ApplyOnline system has been upgraded to provide address lookup and verification using the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF). NextGen.Net is constantly looking for ways to enhance and streamline its much-lauded electronic lodgement service. The ...

Media Release 8th March 2013 Lock the Gate Alliance INTERNAL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS SHOW NSW CSG INDUSTRY FLOUNDERING Documents obtained under freedom of information laws reveal extraordinary opposition to coal seam gas in rural NSW which is impeding the industry, and should send a warning signal to investors everywhere, according to Lock The Gate Alliance. The documents include draft instruments of renewal for controversial coal seam gas exploration licences, and correspondence between gas companies and governments on those renewals. The documents show that the NSW Government plans to renew most licences across 100% of the original area, waiving a mandatory requirement that licences are reduced by 25% on renewal. The departmental unit considering renewals, Petroleum Geoscience, is on the record in the documents admitting the impediments to the industry are substantial. For example, it states that: PEL462: "Work Program proposed is quite minimal and much reduced compared to previous years. However, due to p ...

Media Release - Jobs and Unemployment, 1st March 2013. Liberal candidate for Franklin Bernadette Black has urged the Prime Minister to use her visit to Hobart to outline how Labor will turn around the state’s increasing unemployment rate, specifically a 5200 job loss in Tasmania this past year. When announcing today’s jobs expo, Employment Minister Bill Shorten together with Federal Tasmanian Labor MPs Julie Collins and Carol Brown, promised it would provide hundreds of job opportunities. “Tasmania has a chronic unemployment situation which has been exacerbated by Labor/Green governments in both Hobart and Canberra, so I welcome that commitment, but wonder if Labor can deliver,” Mrs Black said. She said Tasmania’s jobless rate is the worst in the nation and is dangerously close to hitting 8 per cent – well above the national average of 5.4 per cent. “We’ve seen hundreds of jobs lost nationally in industries like mining and forestry, here in Tasmania, because Labor and the Greens have colla ...
Media Release 12 February 2013 “FEDERAL ENVIRONMENT MINISTER TRASHES GLOUCESTER AND MANNING VALLEY PROMISE!” As the political punch-up between the Commonwealth Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, Tony Burke and the NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell escalates over the NSW Government’s failure to introduce an appropriate protocol to ensure proper scientific overview of Mining Exploration Licences and Mining approvals, the people of the Gloucester Basin and Manning Valley have become the latest collateral damage. In what could be described as a rather strange, inexplicable and callous twist, the Commonwealth Minister appears to have by-passed his own protocol and the Commonwealth Government’s undertaking to utilise the independent expert scientific assessment process to “help build community confidence in coal seam gas and coal mining developments in sensitive areas” (Tony Burke) and announced conditional approvals for three mining projects in NSW including t ...
Media Release, 27 February 2013 “REGULATOR SLAMS PLANNED TRANSGRID UPGRADE” Yesterday’s article entitled ‘Regulator slams planned Transgrid Upgrade’ written by Brian Robins for the Melbourne Age (reproduced in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Tasmanian Observer), clearly amplifies a further indictment of Transgrid’s proposals to build a totally unnecessary and unjustified 330,000 volt transmission line from Stroud to Lansdowne. The article refers to the heavy criticism that Transgrid received from the national electricity industry regulator, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) in its Quarterly Compliance Report. In June 2012 The Manning Alliance lodged an official complaint with the AER calling for a review of the Transgrid Proposal. This was quickly followed up with a meeting on 12 June 2012, at the AER’s headquarters in Melbourne with the Managing Director, of the AER, Michelle Groves and a delegation from the Manning Alliance including Chairman Peter Epov, Deputy Chairman Bruce Roberts ...

Here is the AA's response to Simon Bridges release: Media Release: 24 January 2013 AA welcomes plans to improve rural school safety The NZ Automobile Association is welcoming government plans to improve road safety around rural schools. The plans include installing more variable speed limit signs, and developing a guide to identify engineering solutions to improve rural school road safety. “These proposals are pragmatic, evidence-based solutions that target actual risks, and will improve rural road safety for children and other road users, while also encouraging motorists to travel at safe speeds when children are present,” says AA Principal Advisor Mark Stockdale. “Making the roads safer around our schools is about more than just speed limits. Independent research shows the best thing that can be done to reduce accidents around schools is to eliminate the need for children to cross the road. That includes things like creating bus bays that are off the road, moving the school gate off the main road, ...

Media Release – 24 th January 2013 FIRST NATIONAL HAS LANDLORDS COVERED Australians continue to invest in property as a proven path to long-term financial security and the summer months bring increased rental relocation activity, particularly in the early months of the new year. However, many landlords and property investors neglect to protect their valuable asset by taking out appropriate insurance cover. “It is important for landlords to realise the cover they need should extend beyond the normal building insurance policy, which does not cover things like willful damage to their property, failure to pay rent, or claims made against them by their tenant,” First National Real Estate Maroochydore principal, Rod McLean said. “Summer is always a busy time in the rental market as tenants find it more convenient to move at the start of the school year, and, the holiday letting market also produces increased interest. “Landlord protection policies differ widely, but at First National Real Estate Mro . ...
Media Release   January 21, 2013   Iloilo City- Militant anti-imperialist youth group, League of Filipino Students (LFS) have condemned what it called a ‘series of attacks’ of the United States against Philippine sovereignty.   Citing the January 8th discovery of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (AUV) at the shores of Masbate province, and the most recent crash of USS Guardian at Tubbataha Marine Reserve at Palawan, the LFS condemned the government for lack of action.   “We call on all youth to be patriotic and condemn the government for letting the US violate our national integrity and sovereignty” says JC Alejandro, Regional Spokesperson of LFS in Panay.   The group lambasted the explanations of the national government on the presence of drones in the country. “This is not the first time the US used AUVs in the country. We should remember that on 2006, it was used at Mindanao under supposed anti-terrorist campaign.”   AUVs commonly called drones is a technology used by the US Armed Forces in ...
Media Release: After Nirbhaya, this time it is Roshni. Reporting from Ground Zero! Press Release Exactly a month after the Nirbhaya rape case, another rape has taken place, that too in broad day-light, barely a few kilometres from where Nirbhaya was found in a seriously injured condition. Clearly, Nirbhaya has been forgotten and it is business as usual, at least as far as the Delhi Police is concerned, probably as this case is not being considered to be ‘high-profile’ enough for them to take proper action. This time it is Roshni (name changed), an 8 year old daughter of migrant industrial workers who were raped by a yet to be identified person on the afternoon of the 17th January 2013 at her residence in Kapashera, South West Delhi. She was taken to the Safdarjung Hospital by her parents during the evening on the same day. Even after a week of the crime, the police appear to be doing a whitewash of the crime at best, as no results of their ‘efforts’ are evident. There was an attempt to change the ...

Media Release: Close the MDG deficits, look beyond 2015 – Social Watch Philippines With two years left to go before deadline of the United Nations - Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), prospects of achieving the country’s commitments are far from reassuring. Media Release 17 January 2013   GILLARD GOVERNMENT UNDERMINES AUSTRALIA'S LAW    The Gillard government's decision to exempt churches from anti-discrimination laws is creating a two-tier legal system in Australia, according to Meredith Doig, president of the Rationalist Society of Australia.   She says the decision is based on politics and has been taken without consideration for the long term consequences. "At a time when we are having a Royal Commission into child abuse by church officials you would think there would be great sensitivity about the legal treatment of churches," says Doig. "Yet Julia Gillard has no qualms about waiving the law."   Doig says Australia needs to be secular, pluralistic and democratic. Government policies should be based on evidence, reason and compassion, and protect the human rights of all Australians. "Everyone should be free to choose and hold their own religious or non- religious world views, provided they do not impose such views on others, and provided practices a ...

Media Release: January 7, 2013. Enbridge Panel in Vancouver BC to be Greeted with Loud Demonstration. Diverse list of Native Nations and grassroots groups demand consent not consultation When the Enbridge pipeline joint Environmental Assessment and Energy Board hearings open in Vancouver on January 14th they will be greeted by community members determined to make their opposition heard on the streets and inside the hearing room. A large, noise demonstration will march through downtown Vancouver in full support of the self-determination of Indigenous communities, and their rights to say no to oil and gas pipelines across their territories. The Harper government has gutted Canada's already weak environmental laws, giving cabinet the final say on pipepline projects and making the Joint Review Panel hearings merely a public relations (consultation) exercise. This undemocratic change attempts to remove the rights of communities to say no to big oil corporations. Indigenous communities have already rejected th ...

FAWU Media Release, 6 January 2013 FAWU Calls For a Radical January 8th Address by President Zuma The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) calls for a radical policy-type January 8th Statement Address by the President of the African National Congress (ANC), Comrade Jacob Zuma on the occasion of the 101th anniversary of the ANC and in the context of the centenary of the Land Act.We call on the ANC President Address to acknowledge that it is now 100 years since the Land Act of 1913, which effectively disposed Africans from the inadequate remaining arable land and converted them into cheap labour on mines and white-owned commercial agricultural sector.Further, we call on Comrade Zuma to acknowledge the failure of the previous Land Reform policies in transferring land to the majority, including missing the 2009 target of transferring 30% of the land and it appears this target will still be missed 5 years later in 2014, the 20th year of democracy and freedom.Worse still is the plight of farm workers, estimated ...

Media Release: Minister of Education Donald Grant Western Cape 1 January 2013 On Thursday, the 3rd of January 2013 over 44 000 young people from the Western Cape will receive their individual National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. We are confident that the Class of 2012 in the Western Cape will do themselves and this Province proud. As these results are released it is important to analyse and interpret them to obtain an accurate sense of the state of education in this Province. While there is a tendency to focus solely on the provincial pass rate (which is an important indicator), we must also consider other important factors and indicators of success. These indicators include: • the number of candidates writing and passing the NSC examinations; • the number of candidates achieving access to a Bachelor’s Degree pass; • the number of candidates passing mathematics and science; and • the number of underperforming schools (i.e. high schools with a matric pass rate of less than 60%). There are some stories that catch newsrooms across the country completely off guard. Like 26/11 or the SEAL team six's raid on Osama Bin Laden. The kind of stories that blindside you on some idle Tuesday. Then, there are the stories that news desks have had months, sometimes years, to plan for. You know they're inevitable. So you do the best you can to prepare for them. You have intermittent meetings to discuss how the event will be covered. How the logistics and resources will be best utilised. What the packages, the highlights, the pictures and the reactions will be. Yet, when that moment arrives, no matter how much and how often you have deliberated over it, it still takes you completely by surprise. And so it was with Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from one-day cricket. Everybody knew it was going to happen. But when the BCCI's innocuously titled email "Media Release" appeared in the in-boxes of cricket reporters across the world at 11.20 am IST on Sunday morning, it sent many newsrooms across the coun ...

Claude Arpi on direct cash transfer scheme: Finance Minister P. Chidambaram believes that direct cash transfer (DCT) to poorer sections "will be a simple and error-free arrangement". The government will just use 'technology'. Recently, the minister addressed government officials and the staff of various banks in Pondicherry. Mr. Chidambaram said "with the availability of banking technology, the scheme is not a complex arrangement but an easy programme. ...Banking technology is a black box technology and there was absolutely no room for mistakes, corruption or human interference in the operation of the scheme". Delhi plans to release some Rs 2,00,000 crores of subsidies under various schemes. The government would like the Direct Cash Transfer Scheme to be implemented by the end of 2013, in other words before the next general elections. The Indian minister has probably never heard of the Louvois project. An article in FRANCE 24, says it all: "FRANCE: When the French army does not pay his soldiers". French . ...
Is mining a good business for tribe? Uncertainties surround Navajo plan to buy mine Gallup Independent December 27, 2012 Kathy Helms Diné Bureau WINDOW ROCK — If it takes Navajo programs six months to get a document through the tribe’s bureaucratic review process, can the Navajo Nation make good on its plan to acquire BHP Billiton’s Navajo Mine by June? That is just one of many questions fueled by the announcement last week that Navajo officials had signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with BHP to negotiate the acquisition of BHP Navajo Coal Co. In a media statement, BHP stated that its decision to pursue discussions to sell the mine to the Navajo Nation reflects a number of factors, “including the reduction of demand from the Four Corners Power Plant when three of its five units cease to operate.” Southern California Edison must exit the Four Corners Power Plant by 2016 because of new state regulations against the purchase of power generated by coal. With the potential sale of SCE ...

Sammy Hagar says the estate of Ronnie Montrose is behind the delay in releasing the guitarist’s tribute show DVD. And the frustrated singer vows that if the concert film doesn’t hit shelves soon, he’ll take action himself. Guitar icon Montrose shot himself in March this year. He had suffered from clinical depression for much of his life, and the deaths of his uncle and dog within weeks of each other are understood to have been factors in his decision to commit suicide. The following month, surviving Montrose members Hagar, Bill Church and Denny Carmassi fronted a memorial event that also starred Joe Satriani, Neal Schon, Tommy Thayer, Jimmy DeGrasso and many others. It was filmed, and an early release was predicted – but it’s yet to take place. Answering fan questions in the video below, Chickenfoot frontman Hagar says: “There were some problems with the Montrose estate people. They weren’t co-operating and stuff. “But we filmed everything and it was great stuff. If it doesn’t get done s ...

Hey All.. I hope you have all had an amazing Xmas and are looking forward to the coming year with as much excitement as we are here at Stigma. Wow, what a year 2012 has been for us all at Stigma, indeed for the whole country. Its been a year where the sportsmen and women of the world have taken centre stage and have been the inspiration for most. Firstly it’s been Olympic year and whether you were into it or not, it was hugely successful and seemed to bring the whole country together in a wave of euphoria. A year where Andy Murray finally won his first Grand Slam in the US Open, as well as Olympic gold. But best of all, for me personally, was Chelsea winning the Champions league. When that penalty went in from Drogba, it was flashback time, taking me back to when I was a teenager standing in the Shed End at Stamford Bridge singing songs that I shouldn’t have been singing, being the only black in the village and loving it. Man how this world or has changed or has it? Despite all these amazing and inspi ...
Bias in the news media Is the news media biased toward liberals? Yes. Is the news media biased toward conservatives? Yes. These questions and answers are uninteresting because it is possible to find evidence--anecdotal and otherwise--to "prove" media bias of one stripe or another. Far more interesting and instructive is studying the inherent, or structural, biases of journalism as a professional practice--especially as mediated through television. Let's use the word "bias" here to challenge its current use by partisan critics. A more accepted, and perhaps more accurate, term would be "frame." These are some of the professional frames that structure what journalists can see and how they can present what they see. 1. Commercial bias: The news media are money-making businesses. As such, they must deliver a good product to their customers to make a profit. The customers of the news media are advertisers. The most important product the news media delivers to its customers are readers or viewers. Good is defin ...

SpongeBob SquarePants (often referred to simply as SpongeBob) is an American animated television series, created by animator Stephen Hillenburg. Much of the series centers on the exploits and adventures of the title character and his various friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. I'll just start by saying this is not an angry post, I just thought you guys could relate. Is it just me or does it seem like every time someone brings up the album Led Zeppelin IV, someone has to give their two cents about how it's actually an unnamed title and that it's not officially Led Zeppelin IV? Every time I'm left thinking, "I know, I just don't have the time to give a history lesson too."

National news of interest Moms Will Change Food-Buying Habits In 2013 Ninety-six percent of American mothers plan to make changes to their food-buying habits in 2013, according to the results of a national survey of more than 1,000 mothers, conducted by Fleishman-Hillard and TheMotherhood.com. The study, "Cart to Kitchen 2013: Slicing Into Moms' Food Decisions," identified what is driving moms' consumer behaviors in meal planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation, as well as changes that food marketers should anticipate in 2013. It also uncovered insights about the food influencers and media channels moms trust most when it comes to making food-buying decisions. Moms place higher priority on the opinions of bloggers and peers than that of experts like doctors and dietitians, which is an important takeaway for food marketers, said Kristie Sigler, senior vice president at Fleishman-Hillard. "Moms are turning to their peers online and off for information about food, from general to more specific informa ...

Game Development of a 4A title isn't like Indie or 3A. It can take years, patent related work, and a substantial amount of artwork with lasting IP contracts. The nature of that media is very different than mashups, impersonation, and duplication of limited range of motion found in 99% of game engines out there. Advanced development requires a different approach, and prior release, that science is a trade secret. Afterwards too, if you file properly.

I hope Harold B. won't mind me re-posting his response to this morning's troll about Benghazi. EPIC. -M "OK, for my morning rant, I'll tackle Benghazi for you Doug- Yes, this was a scandal, congratulations. 3 senior State Department members have resigned, and there was clear negligence on their part in providing the necessary security to the Benghazi so-called consulate, what was in fact a CIA Mission. However, it is not the scandal that the Conservatives wanted- it does not implicate the president, in action or inaction, in any way. There was no "Stand Down" order, as the ignorant, rumor-mongering troglodytes over at Fox News enjoyed repeating without proof, and the rest of the Conservative echo-chamber repeated ad nausium- the members of the CIA annex acted after a slight delay, on their own accord, and receiving intelligence from an unarmed drone diverted from another mission to heroically attempt to rescue the Ambassador and the civilian operative at that facility. Newcastle United's top scorer Demba Ba could leave in the January transfer window because of a release clause in his contract, manager Alan Pardew said on Thursday. The Senegal striker has scored 11 Premier League goals this season but has been linked with a move from St James' Park. British media reported Ba could be prised away for a buyout fee of around seven million pounds. "I think he will stay, but there's a possibility he could go because of the clause that's still in force," Pardew told Sky Sports News. Asked whether Ba might leave at the end of the season, Pardew said he thought the player's future would be resolved before then. "I won't let it run until the summer. I'll do something about it. We will either move Demba tizo

Reports coming in there was no "AR15" used in CT. Doesn't make it any better, but should shut the anti gunners up. Wonder if it will?
Before we ban guns consider the following perspective: The Anti-psychotic drug Fanapt was given to Adam Lanza. Maybe, there were contributing factors to the incident other than the use of a firearm. Do you see any similarities between all these people and the crimes they committed in the following list: Eric Harris age 17 (first on Zoloft then Luvox) and Dylan Klebold aged 18 (Colombine school shooting in Littleton,Colorado), killed 12 students and 1 teacher, and wounded 23 others, before killing themselves. Klebold’s medical records have never been made available to the public. Jeff Weise, age 16, had been prescribed 60mg/day of Prozac (three times the average starting dose for adults!) when he shot his grandfather, his grandfather’s girlfriend and many fellow students at Red Lake, Minnesota. He then shot himself. 10 dead, 12 wounded. i just spent a couple hours reading up on some of the Mayan ways and the 2012 prediction... Guess I should've done that last week, instead of watching all the media reports and posts that were floating around. What a great reminder of how we need to look into facts before commenting or reporting on something. A bit heartbreaking to see how off our reporting of their prediction was and how there was no one, out of the the entire population, that stood up and corrected the misinforming; every one just jumped on board. This one example has shown me a lot about our society and our ways :( I am determined to take in only truth and release only love. It'll take discipline, but I'm ready for this challenge - are any of you?
Press Release My attention has been drawn to statements purportedly issued by Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo yesterday in Siaya saying that anybody intending to contest against Hon Dr Oburu Oginga in the Governor’s seat in that country should defect to another party. I have checked this issue with Hon. Midiwo and he assures me that he never said anything like that. This must be a fabrication by some person or persons with ill intentions calculated to undermine the integrity of the electoral process in the party. I would like to assure Kenyans once again that there is absolutely no sacred cow in the party. The ODM National Elections Board is capable of conducting free and fair nominations to which all contestants will be subjected. As Secretary General of the party I have two people running against me for the Kisumu County Senate Seat. I am doing all I can to win the hearts and minds of the voters to win in a competitive and open nomination process.

A recent media release of ours : Media Release 19 December 2012 Humanist Society of NSW Religion and the Law - Closer than you think "With the Royal Commissions into Child Rape within churches, we're now more aware of the legal privilege of confession - but it's just the start. The Catholic Church controls some very important parts of the law - we're not all equal before it; it's a betrayal of the separation of Church & State, with echoes of Sharia Law." said John August, President of the NSW Humanists. "Apart from the confessional privilege - courts accept a priest cannot detail what they hear in confession, when sued by victims of paedophillia, the Catholic Church have dodged legal responsibility for the harm they have caused by hiding behind legal evasions - using trusts and claims that priests are not employees. "On hearing the apology for stolen generations, many Australians were startled to hear Parliament opening with prayer. It's also startling that the NSW Supreme Court opens the "Start of Law .. ...

Seventeen cars were present in the pits and no threat of rain made for an exciting atmosphere. You could sense people were ready to step up to the mark on the track we haven’t visited for two seasons. Life Member Wayne Spear Chukka Reynolds towed down our promotional trailer with our spectacular marquee offering shade from the sun and selling club merchandise and the Collie Club had embarked on some major renovations and buildings since our last visit. Another tireless worker and Life Member Robyn deMamiel got the boys sorted in the pits and we were ready for racing. No need for wheel packing straight into hot laps to let the drivers dial in the cars. The first heat got off to a bad start with Kemble Aylett having a moment and losing control in turn two and re-entering the track in an interesting manner running into and forcing Squally Higgs into the fence doi .. ...

Media Release: Professor Jane Kelsey Friday 15 June 2012 If Tobacco Policy is Protected in TPP, Why is US Proposing a New Exception? “US plans to table a specific exception of tobacco contradict the government’s reassurances that a Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement would not restrict New Zealand’s right to introduce plain packaging or other tobacco control laws”, according to University of Auckland Law Professor Jane Kelsey. “If the existing treaties are fine, why is the US introducing an exception?”. Both sides of the tobacco debate have been lobbying intensively throughout the TPPA negotiations, especially in the United States. The Obama government has been under intense pressure from public health advocates since a recent from the World Trade Organization struck down America’s ban on importing clove flavoured cigarettes from Indonesia. The US had planned to table an exception specifically targeted at tobacco at the last round of negotiations in Dallas. It backed off after last minute in ...

Kookaburras and Hockeyroos win Super 9’s International Super Series Hockey 9s New! Subscribe to News Articles November 25th, 2012 It’s winning ways for the Kookaburras ahead of the Men’s Champion’s Trophy as Australia defeated England 5-2 at the International Super Series Hockey 9’s in Perth. The four-day tournament bought the Kookaburras together for the first time since the London Olympics and provided a good chance for coach Ric Charlesworth to run his eye over a number of players prior to the December 1-9 tournament in Melbourne. It was five-time world player of the year Jamie Dwyer who got things going for the Kookaburras scoring the opening goal. Joining Dwyer on the score sheet in the first ten minutes of the game was Eddie Ockenden and Matt Ghodes who helped setup what was a brilliant first half of hockey from the Australians. The second half was evenly matched with England finding the back of the net twice through Ally Brogdon and Harry Martin to make things interesting. Late on in the ...

MINISTRY OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL MEDIA RELEASE STATEMENT ON THE POWER OF THE President to appoint a Commission of Enquiry on his own initiative The Attorney General condemns the recent misguided attempts by the leader of the opposition and other political groups opposed to the government to mislead his Excellency President George Maxwell Richards. The role of the President in a Westminster system of parliamentary democracy is largely ceremonial and non-executive in nature. It would be a misuse and flagrant abuse of Section 81 of the constitution for his Excellency to institute a political probe or inquiry into the actions of the government. This is not the purpose, remit or function of section 81 which is designed to keep the President informed. Parliament is the appropriate organ of state for the opposition to question the action of the government in any matter. It is the duty of the opposition to scrutinise and criticise the government. That is not the function of the President as demonstrated by his s ...
Media Release 9 Focus - Rock Night 27th November 2012 The South African Rock music scene is as vibrant as it has ever been and one of the highlights of the 2012 Mzansi Fela Festival will be the ‘Rock Nights’ show that will feature seven top-quality acts competing for the top prize. The ‘Battle of the Bands’ style show will see the seven groups give a sample of their play-list, with the performers named top on the night winning a R10 000 first-prize. The show will take place at the Rendezvous Theatre on Thursday, December 13 from 18h00. The sting in the tale is that the winners will be decided by the audience on the night, which means the band that is able to bring along the most supporters will be the winner. The bands that finish in second to fifth place will get to feature regularly on the State Theatre’s Rock Nights programme through 2013, an excellent platform to showcase their talent. Rock Nights organiser Brendan Auret says the formula has worked for the past two years and they are expecti ...
