However, Langston Hughes is by far my favorite black poet; and yes that means over Dr. Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni. Although Daniel Beaty and Alice Walker, are a close second and third.

Legendary poet Maya Angelou died Wednesday at the age of 86. Poet Nikki Giovanni, who was a friend, remembers her life and work.
Almost done with "The Mysterious Benedict Society" for 7 y/o & our 5 year requested poetry "Oh How Sylvester Can Pester". Need to find copy of Poetry Speaks to Children. It has works from artist like Langston Hughes; Sonia Sanchez; Nikki Giovanni; Roald Dahl; J. R. R. Tolkien; Robert Frost; Gwendolyn Brooks; Ogden Nash. Has anyone read from Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou ? I think this will be a good intro for my little ones to Dr. Angelou.
Poetry, will always be my first love, Sadden by the lost of Maya Angelou, but so thankful for Nikki Giovanni, my favorite poet besides Edgar Allen Poe. Happy Birthday Nikki !!
Maya Angelou, Lauryn Hill, Nikki Giovanni, & Toni Morrison showed me how I could express myself with words. They helped mold me lyrically.
So let me get this straight because pioneers such as "Dr.Maya Angelou, Iyana, Nikki Giovanni, & plenty more. " grew up in a different era that it's acceptable for us to display ignorance, no class, & no morals? Honey, no! Yes, things change being a respectable woman shouldn't. Knowing the essence of valuing yourself as a woman should never change. Not selling your soul for money & pubic gratification. I'm disgusted by the demeanor women have today. Most females think being a bad b***h is ok. Most are more concerned about red bottoms, big booties, & their personal appearances. You do all this so a dude who will eventually use your body & leave you for the next bad b***h. Wake up! Carrying yourself in a respectable manner is what Queens do! You can still be sexy with clothes on. We allowed society to let us believe our body parts determine our worth. Less is better. No, baby girl. Educating your mind is needed more. It saddens me that my daughters have to grow up with these females who have little girls. S ...

Was watching Oprah's Legends Ball on OWN. I cried from the time it came on and when it went off, I had to turn off the TV and sit in silence for a moment to take it in. That was so POWERFUL, I got chill bumps! Amazing women! Courageous women who pushed through and overcame adversity. Bold women who BUILT doors of opportunity during a time when it wasn't safe for them. Often we don't say what someone means to us until they're gone. So, I commend Oprah for the doors she's opened and for taking the time to say, "THANK YOU" to them while they were still alive. And to see that many women celebrating and uplifting each other... Wow! I'm still in tears. (singing) "A wonderful change, has come over me... He changed my walk. He changed my talk... I'm so glad He changed me..." The 25 women honored included Maya Angelou, Shirley Caesar, Diahann Carroll, Elizabeth Catlett, Ruby Dee, Katherine Dunham, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Nikki Giovanni, Dorothy Height, Lena Horne, Coretta Scott King, Gladys K ...
Maya Angelou made it possible for us to get to know about others like Sonia Sanchez, Alice Walker & Nikki Giovanni.
One of my greatest moments in life was to sit at the feet and in the presence of Dr. Maya Angelou!! I often use her profound words from her books and poetry in speeches that I have made!! I have enriched my thinking by reading her work, such as "I know Why the Cage Bird Sings," "Phenomenal Woman," "A Brave and Startling Truth," "Million Man March Poem," "Just Give Me A Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie," "President Clinton's Inaugural Poem," and so many more!! Long lives her memory as an civil rights activist, poet, Author, scholar, humanitarian...! Ain't Dr. Maya (Marguerite Ann Johnson) Angelou a woman!!! For those of us who read, it is my opinion, that her writing and work ranks with that of William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Nikki Giovanni, Ernest Hemingway, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Emily Dickerson, and so many other of my favorites! Hail to the Queen and the fairest of them ALL!!
Some of the first women writers of color that I ever read were Octavia Butler, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Alice Walker. Excellent, thoughtful minds shaped by the Black American experiences of Jim Crow, the misogny of western culture, and the promise of better days ahead. I awoke this morning thinking, "something aint right". It's the same thing I thought the morning Ms. Butler took her final breath. How connected am I to these women I have never met. Who not only impacted how I choose to see the world, but my method of expressing myself. Whose very presence changed minds, opened doors, and paved ways. Today we lost another elder, and are the poorer for it. But the riches Mother Angelou has left with us makes sure she that she will, indeed, live forever.
You look at folks like Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Stevie Wonder and just assume that they're immortal.
On the last day of Black History Month, as a poet, I speak the names of poets who have inspired my work and whose shoulders I stand: Phillis Wheatley, Audre Lorde, Paul Laurence Dunbar, James Weldon Johnson, Countee Cullen, Arna Bontemps, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou,Imamu Asa Baraka, and Langston Hughes! Your words continue to inspire me to challenge thought, to change minds and to speak truth to power! ASE!
Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker...just to name a few great literary GENIUSES!
I miss the days when life was filled with Spike Lee films and overalls with the one strap unbuttoned and LA Gear sneakers with the little pump on the top and the flashing lights on the bottom and the waiting (dollar in hand) for the elotes Lady to come down the street with her shopping cart. I miss the dancing with Mommy, barefoot on the front lawn, to Beres Hammond, Smokey Robinson, Celia Cruz, The Temptations and Pattie Labelle. I miss riding handle bars and double dutch and popping bubble gum bubbles on our noses and sitting/crying between Mommy's knees while she did her best to tame this hair of mine and beads on the ends of my braids. I also miss hole in the wall Fish and Chicken joints and Erykah Badu in the summertime and Rollie Pollie bugs and pet Praying Mantises. I miss Hide and Seek at block parties and laying my head in Mommy's lap while she read Maya Angelou, Malcolm X, Nikki Giovanni and Toni Morrison to me. I miss laughing so hard at Richard Pryor and Moms Mabley when I was too young to und ...

SOME INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES BY BLACK WOMEN "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." Maya Angelou Don't wait around for other people to be happy for you. Any happiness you get you've got to make yourself." Alice Walker "Deal with yourself as an individual, worthy of respect, and make everyone else deal with you the same way." Nikki Giovanni "Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide." Marva Collins "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can still come out of it." Maya Angelou "Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness." Oprah Winfrey "Whatever you fear most has no power - it is your fear that has the power. In Conversation: Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou on Sisterhood, and Their Friendship with Toni Morrison “It is sheer good fortune to miss somebody long before they leave you.” Toni Morrison, who celebrates her 82nd birthday (Feb 18), wrote that immortal phrase 40 years ago about her sons Ford and Slade as part of the dedication of her acclaimed second novelSula. The same words came back eight novels, a Pulitzer Prize, a Nobel Prize and a Presidential Medal of Freedom later to wrap their arms around her in loving celebration of the legacy she’s since built. That was exactly the purpose of “Sheer Good Fortune,” a two-day commemoration of Morrison’s body of work that took place at Virginia Tech. The event was created by her longtime friends and fellow literary powerhouses Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou’s desire to “throw a lot of love around Toni” following the December 2010 death of her son Slade, who co-authored children’s books with her. The historic gathering was a Who’s Who of the ...

Nikki Giovanni will be a headliner at Anguilla's 2nd Annual Literary Festival and will celebrate her 70th Birthday on island. Her is a little about her: NIKKI GIOVANNI is the proud recipient of seven NAACP Image Awards for her poetry. She has been awarded The Langston Hughes Medal for Poetry and she is the first recipient of The Rosa L. Parks Woman of Courage Award. The state of Tennessee, her birth state, has placed an Historic Marker at 400 Mulvaney Street the home of her Grandparents where she lived during her teen years. Giovanni was invited to create the poem, At This Moment, celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln. Standing where Marion Anderson stood was one of her proudest moments, she says. 2008 was an unusually productive year with Giovanni bringing four books to publication. Hip Hop Speaks To Children; Lincoln and Douglas: An American Friendship; and The Grasshopper's Song added to her children's canon. Hip Hop reached Number 3 on the New York Times Best Seller List. Nikki Giovanni & Maya Angelou on Sisterhood, &Their Friendship with Toni Morrison |
Powerful black women/men are my inspiration and my motivation. E.g Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Lena Horne, MLK, Bob Marley, etc. I thought I was strong, but they are the epitome of strength and what it means to have strength. (Peace, love, strength, selflessness, kind hearts, etc) I need to be more humble.
Black History Month...We do not Emphasize enough... as black people...if we don’t, neither will they. Remember your heroes, not just Martin Luther and Marcus Garvey, but Malcolm Little and Steve Harvey, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, the real black fathers and the tough black mommies. I make Black History everyday...do you?
The type of woman I'd like to be.Would have the strength of Nanny of the Maroons, Speak like Nikki Giovanni, Endure and triumph like Maya Angelou, Help others like Dr. Ruth Hayre, Change the times like Zora Neale Hurston, Be witty like Etta James, Stand by her family like Michelle Obama and Coretta Scott King, Break records like Flo-Jo, Cook like Big Mama (everyone knows one), be the first like Madame CJ Walker, Make people move to my beat like Celia Cruz, Be sexy like Sade, age gracefully like Phylicia Rashad, be as wealthy as Beyonce Knowles-Carter and as smart as Condeleeza Rice. I will never be these women...however because of them... I, Tasheba Suzannie Taylor has an opportunity to be the best me ever. This Black History Month I salute all women past, present and future who don't let their complexion define them but let their actions speak for themselves.
Today is your last chance to give! Saturday was Joanne Gabbin's birthday! She has served as the founder and director of the Furious Flower Poetry Center for over 13 years. During her time at the center she has organized several conferences and summits, countless readings and major programs honoring African American writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Rita Dove, Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Lucille Clifton, Sonia Sanchez, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou and many others. Her dedication to the center and the community is absolute. Dr. Gabbin is truly an excellent teacher, director, scholar, and mentor; she is a Furious Flower. The best gift you could give Joanne Gabbin for her birthday is a contribution to the center. Your donation will help Furious Flower continue to prosper. It will help fund programs in local schools and the 2014 poetry conference! You can give $22 for Joanne Gabbin’s birthday 2-2-2013, you can give $14 for 14 years of dedication to the center, or you can give what you can, $220 or $1. IT AL ...

Maya Angelou, , Nikki Giovanni, Edwidge Danticat, and yours truly all paying tribute to Toni Morrison
On Wed night so much was going on that it was almost too much to contend with. I was so excited about the debate and the chance to attend a celebration at Virginia Tech honoring none other thanTonni Morrison. the event was sponsored by Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Nikki Giovanni and Dr. Joanne Gabbin. Participants included Rita Dove, Tim and Daphine Reed,Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka to name a few. The greatest literary minds had come together to honor Mrs. Morrison. Just when I thought thea it could not get any better out steps India Aire and sang her heart out. As the crowd was trying to recover, the one and only Angela Davis came to the stage with over 3,ooo people giving her a standing ovation before she said anything. The rest is history. We rushed back to Dr. Monica Motley's (my baby) to watch the ending of the debate. Pre. Obama nailed it. Did anyone notice besides me, that Ann Romney looked like she was about to burst out in tears at any moment when the debate ended. My 88 year old mother(soon to be 89, 10 ...

I just had one of those days and evenings that we all DESERVE once in awhile (and probably more often than that!). What a fine time in Blacksburg -- dinner on Main Street (where it was warm enough to sit at an outside table), a walk across VaTech's campus -- and a mouth-dropping, awe-inspiring evening of seeing and hearing the likes of Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Angela Davis, violinist Akemi Takayama, singer India Arie - and about 20 other 'famous' folks -- all reading and celebrating Toni Morrison. Her profound gratitude and awe of the program, as well as her words at the end, had tears running down my face. And thank YOU, my fine pal, Lloyd K. Blevins, for one of those evenings that will forever be in the precious side of the memory bank!
