Traveling Through Multiple Europes (Geopolitical Weekly) TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2014 By Adriano Bosoni Europe is overcrowded with people and with nations. Six decades ago, the need to suppress the dangerous forces of nationalism led to the unprecedented political, economic and social experiment now known as the European Union. The hundreds of thousands of EU citizens working across the Continent and the lack of border controls between member states show that the experiment has been successful in many ways. However, rising nationalism, pervasively high unemployment and a growing sense of frustration with governing elites also highlight the serious limitations of the European project. Over the past 12 months, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, observing firsthand how the global economic crisis is reawakening dormant trends along the Continent's traditional fault lines. The crisis is having an uneven effect on EU member states because the eurozone locks countries with different levels of economic d ...

Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has something to teach Angela Merkel of Germany and David Cameron of the UK and it is about leadership. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has urged the UK to stay in the European Union, hours after Ukip leader Nigel Farage promised the UK was close to exiting. Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, as Italy started its six month presidency of the European Union, Mr Renzi said: "Europe without the UK would not only be less rich, but less Europe and less itself." His positive speech about Europe's prospects came hours after Mr Farage told the parliament the UK was "closer now to exiting than ever," and called the parliament "a museum". Commenting after Mr Renzi's speech, Mr Farage said: "All the big leaders, all the EU countries are scared by England leaving." Mr Renzi, he said, deserved seven out of ten for his speech. Suor Cristina, Italy's singing nun, wins TV talent show Cristina Scuccia, 25, recites Lord's Prayer after her win on The Voice of Italy, but has angered many traditional Catholics Lizzy Davies in Rome, Friday 6 June 2014 12.28 BST Tears, tantrums, and tediously long speeches: all of these are the stuff of any good TV singing contest final. Rarely, however, does the Lord's Prayer feature. Then again, rarely is the contest won by a nun. On Thursday night, to the surprise of almost no one, Cristina Scuccia, a 25-year-old Sicilian with a modest manner and a big voice, triumphed in the final of reality show The Voice of Italy. Suor (Sister) Cristina, as she is almost universally known, had been the hot favourite ever since she debuted with Alicia Keys's No One in March. When her victory was confirmed – at 62% it was even more of a landslide than Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's showing in the European elections, and possibly more heartfelt – she smiled and gave a cheerful thumbs up. As UKIP in Britain pushes its way slowly towards mainstream politics, its Italian counterpart (I won’t say equivalent) looks to some as if it may have peaked, for the moment at least. The parties have had remarkably different histories. UKIP has taken twenty years to reach its present position, dragging itself up the political rankings, helped by the occasional scandal, but essentially just ploughing away at its message. Beppe Grillo’s 5-Star movement, by contrast, exploded on to the political scene. Grillo, a comedian but possibly more famous as a blogger, started the party in 2009 and at the 2013 election reached around a quarter of the popular vote, subsequently refusing to enter into one of the traditional alliances which have marked Italian post war politics, largely for the worse. In May’s Euro elections, 5-Star’s vote had slipped to 21 percent – but in an election completely dominated by Matteo Renzi. Whilst Nigel Farage’s image is blokey, Grillo’s is violently iconoclastic. The party ...

Guardian Obama calls European leaders over Ukraine crisis Saturday, 08 March 2014 23:34 Written by AFP Category: World PRESIDENT Barack Obama and key European allies expressed "grave concern" Saturday over Russia's actions in Ukraine as Washington warned further military escalation could jeopardize chances of brokering a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The White House said Obama discussed Ukraine in calls with French counterpart Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian leader Matteo Renzi. "The leaders reiterated their grave concern over Russia's clear violation of international law and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," a White House summary of the calls said. It's not as sexy as his Vanity Fair cover... but here's an interesting profile on Italy's new PM, Matteo Renzi.
Italy’s Matteo Renzi: New man of destiny: “A Man of Providence is coming. During my life, I have already known one of such a character: it was enough to [last] me, forever.” This is how the great Italian journalist of postwar period Indro Montanelli described Silvio Berlusconi as, in some aspects, the heir of Mussolini, when he became Italian Prime Minister in 1994. What brings together the Fascist ‘il Duce’ and ‘il Cavaliere’ as he is called in Italy, is not obviously fascism. To believe in a fascist danger after the regime was buried by history remained only the Italian Left that used anti-fascism as an ideology to cover its desertion of any real alternative politics. The Man of Destiny, the one who can resolve any problem with his magical charisma is truly an archetype of the Italian psyche, rooted in the long centuries in which Italy was “a geographical expression.” Waiting for some outside salvation became a habit. Through the wringer of history this myth provided unfailingly rushin ...

CURRENT AFFAIRS 15 FEB - 22 FEB Italy's youngest-ever PM Matteo Renzi sworn in:: Matteo Renzi became Italy’s youngest premier on Saturday, promising a new era of stable government after using old-school politicking to engineer the ouster of a fellow Democrat he deemed too timid to get the nation back to work. Telangana bill passed in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha:: Telangana is set to come into being — as the 29th State of India. That some pain and suffering would accompany the bifurcation was, perhaps, inevitable; but a great deal of the violence and acrimony could have been avoided had the Congress and the Central government acted with greater sensitivity and understanding of the hopes and fears of the peoples in the two regions. But now is the time to look ahead, and try and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Telangana and allay the apprehensions of those of Seemandhra, or the residual Andhra Pradesh state. The residual state is to get special category status for the purpose of Central assis ...

'Demolition Man' Renzi's next fight: Berlusconi In the revolving door that is Italian politics, the country is set to get its third Prime Minister in a year with Enrico Letta officially resigning on Friday afternoon after losing a bruising battle for the leadership of his party with Matteo Renzi. But analysts are keeping a weather eye on ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi, who could yet spoil any welcoming party for the new premier. Renzi - currently still mayor of Florence and known as the "demolition man" - ousted his Democratic Party (PD) colleague late Thursday after he called for "radical change" in an economically stagnant and politically unstable Italy. "If we don't take risks and we don't take responsibility now, the slow pace of reform, without a strong push on our behalf, could result in losing our economic competitiveness," Renzi said at Thursday's party meeting. Berlusconi back on trial over alleged bribe to opposition lawmaker A new trial was due to start in Naples on Tuesday against Italy’s scandal-prone former premier Silvio Berlusconi, on charges of bribing an opposition lawmaker to switch over to his side. In 2006, Sergio De Gregorio was elected with the centre-left coalition of Romano Prodi, but defected soon after. He was re-elected for Berlusconi’s conservatives in 2008, and remained a senator until last year. As his parliamentary immunity expired, he confessed to prosecutors that Berlusconi bribed him with 4.1 million dollars. In October, he was sentenced to a 20-month-jail term, under a plea bargain agreement. Lawyers for Berlusconi, who is a billionaire media mogul as well as a politician, have defended the payment to De Gregorio as legitimate financial aid for the small party the senator founded after his left-right switch. The prosecution sees the alleged bribe as part of a plan to bring down Prodi, who won in 2006 by a wafer-thin margin. He surv ...

After Grillo, Florence Mayor Was a Big Winner in Italy's Vote The big winner in Italy's election was populist leader Beppe Grillo, but young Florence mayor Matteo Renzi is emerging as a less obvious beneficiary of a huge protest vote that threatens to destroy the old political system. Renzi, a telegenic, 38-year-old American-style politician who toured Italy in a camper van before Grillo did the same in his campaign, is the opposite of colorless center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani, the election's biggest loser. Whereas Bersani's oratory can leave an audience yawning, Renzi is an electric, fast-talking and articulate performer who paces the stage in his shirt sleeves pushing just the right buttons to whip up a crowd. He has already demonstrated an... ~Wally
