Intro by Matt Damon - and the beautiful Howard Zinn on Civil Disobedience
Settled in on my flight to listen to 35 hours of Matt Damon reading Howard Zinn only to find out he only read the abridged version.
The problem in this world is not Civil Disobedience...the problem in this world is civil obedience." - Howard Zinn, being read by Matt Damon

Matt Damon, a lifelong friend of Howard Zinn and his family, read excerpts from a speech Howard Zinn gave in 1970 as part of a debate on Civil Disobedience.
Howard Zinn's famous 1970's words on civil "dis"obedience, as read by Matt Damon.
This scene from "Good Will Hunting" goes a long way towards explaining why there will never be a revolution in the United States. Here you have a bunch of young guys fighting over some girls. But does any of them throw a punch? Nope. They play "quiz show." Russians would have had their stilettos out. OK. Maybe that's unfair. Matt Damon does offer to step outside with the Harvard *** (and we can presume he'd kick his *** . The problem is the lack of class consciousness, or, to be more specific, the fake class consciousness that runs through this film. 1.) Harvard *** grad student in history is probably a poorly paid adjunct by now. 2.) Matt Damon probably did wind up working for the NSA. 3.) Even though this film poses as left wing (Matt Damon quotes Howard Zinn) it's a film about the meritocracy. Matt Damon is a SUPER GENIUS. Just cause he is. He can do ANYTHING HE WANTS. He's never suffered because of bad schools or a bad neighborhood. All he needs is a little bit of self-help and recovery admini ...

I have suggested — often enough I hope — that everyone read "A People's History of the United States." I consider it Howard Zinn's masterwork — and his enduring legacy (if I was forced to pick just ONE book). A friend sent me the attached video of Matt Damon reading the words of Howard Zinn — and it's something I think we should all really HEAR right about now. If you DO follow the link (and I hope you will) — please remind yourself that most of your TEA Party relatives and friends, however misguided their ACTIONS may be — are saying pretty much the same thing as this noted progressive, historian, teacher, philosopher, activist and author. What they're missing — I believe — is Howard's sage advice that we'll only win this fight TOGETHER: "No, not just tearing things down; building things up." To paraphrase Jon Stewart: '... and now, your moment of Zinn.'

♦ FREE Film Tomorrow at Artrage! ♦ WHEN: tomorrow, Th3 Thursday, February 21st TIME: 7pm WHERE: Artrage - 505 Hawley Ave., 13203 WHAT: The People Speak (2009) (113 min) Directed by Anthony Arnove, Chris Moore; Written by Howard Zinn & Anthony Arnove with Matt Damon, Viggo Mortensen, Kerry Washington, Danny Glover and many more. Actors and musicians read writings and letters by the rebels of American history, like John Brown. Others read quotes showing some of the darker side of our history, like Abraham Lincoln’s early determination NOT to free the slaves. And still others read words by unknown ‘regular people’ commenting on their times. Mixed with this are folk songs performed by Eddie Vedder, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and others. The idea is to take a specific perspective on American history, from the time of the Declaration of Independence on, as a nation forged, and constantly changed by rabble rousers and revolutionaries, from Thomas Jefferson to Fredrick Douglas to Susan B. Anthony. Zi ...
Howard Zinn is no longer just for washed up actors like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. His Neo-Communist propaganda is being wedged deeper and deeper into the educational system, because teaching kids to hate America is the new education.
Howard Zinn and his wife were next door neighbors to Matt Damon and babysat sometimes too!?! Ha. That explains a lot.
Cleverly subverting the paparazzi by showing solidarity with teachers striking is what happens when you grow up next door to Howard Zinn.
I love this man, Mr. Matt Damon...not only because he's a good actor, and not bad to look at, but because he's a Howard Zinn groupie.;) I have a great deal of respect for him...Matt.
Matt Damon has decentish politics having grown up with Howard Zinn & his wife (who lived near his parents) reading with him as a kid.
Always has been - Matt Damon too. Grew up hanging out with Howard Zinn.
So, our shared interests go beyond Howard Zinn. I knew there must be other reasons I find this guy so appealing.
are Howard Zinn and Matt Damon a couple?
Dang underfunded public library system that doesn't have enough people working there to check in the books that I dropped off on Friday around noon. We were at our thirty item limit and I returned twenty eight of those after they'd been either richly enjoyed or judged not-quite-what-I-was-looking for. (Holding on to "How do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?" and "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?" was non-negotiable.) And now I have this happily accumulating stack of reserve items including an audio version of "A People's History of the United States" read by Howard Zinn and, oddly, Matt Damon, for Greg's next road trip and I can't check anything out yet. Gr...
Thanks to i now know that matt Damon grew up next door to American people's historian Howard Zinn.
Howard Zinn was professor emeritus of political science at Boston University. He is best known for authoring the 1980 book "A People's History of theUnited States," a Marxist tract, which claims to present American history through the eyes of workers, American Indians, slaves, women, blacks and populists. David Horowitz, "TheProfessors", pg. 358 In "A People's History" Zinn claims that greed is the explanation for every major historical event in America. The Revolutionary War,the Civil War and World Wars I and II were all driven by base motives involving rich Americans seeking to further enrich themselves at the expense of others: "Around 1776, certain important people in the English colonies made a discovery that would prove enormously useful for the next two hundred years. They found that by creating a nation, a symbol, a legal unity called the United States, they could take over land, profits and political power from the favorites of the British Empire." Howard Zinn, "A People's History of the United S ...
Takes real courage to stand up to bullies.even if the bully is your own country. Howard Zinn's courage is sorely missed in today's battle between the corporatist parties. His work will stand the test of time.if it isn't somehow expunged.
Looking at my collection, I totally bought Howard Zinn's "A People's History Of The United States" because for Matt Damon! Love that movie!
