Have you all seen "Promised Land?" Matt Damon, Hal Holbrook, Steve Kracsinski (sp? that guy from "The Office.") Frances Mcdormand. It is just wonderful.
Watched another good one. (Hey, rainy day...you're stuck inside...let's hear it for Netflix!) This one is a small, low budget, anti fraking film called Promised Land, written and starred in by Matt Damon and John Krasinski. My big business, screw the environment friends are advised not to see this one as it will set your teeth on edge. Not a great film but enjoyable and thought provoking. (Frances Mcdormand is terrific in a supporting role as is the great Hal Holbrook.)
Directed by Gus Van Sant. With Matt Damon, Hal Holbrook, Frances Mcdormand, John Krasinski. A salesman for a natural gas company experiences life-changing events after arriving in a small town, where his corporation wants to tap into the available resources.

Saw Promised Land, in an almost empty theater. Overall, a good movie, strong performances by Matt Damon, Frances MacDormand, John Krakanski, who co-wrote it with Damon, and Hal Holbrook. Double twist ending. Of course, we know Damon is the good bad guy, but nonetheless, he did a good acting job. The film managed to represent effectively how this crossroads-moment for rural America, caught between poverty and a dying way of life and the promise of riches and the rape of the land, is playing itself in all ways of life, and sectors of the economy. The promise of a richer, brighter future thanks to supposed superior technology vs. standing by as the parade passes you by and you die rocking on the porch. Of course, you die, in this case, when you turn on your tap while lighting up a cigarette and blow yourself and your house to kingdom come. Funny to say this here but maybe we should have a moratorium on new technology. Let's stop it for just three years. Nothing new, let's stay with what we have for awhile.
The Promised Land is a simplistic film which does not live up to any promise. It will be welcomed by those who are against "fracking", but it turns out to be purely propagandistic cinema - good vs. evil - starring Matt Damon, a representative for a major Gas Corporation, who when we first meet him has been promoted to a high position in that company. Damon is so wishy-washy a character that I found him totally unbelievable having difficulty articulating his pro-fracking position as well as his shaky moral values. His partner in manipulating the populace is Frances Mcdormand - who is on her cellphone throughout most of the film, and does add a comedic presence to the movie, but not much more. I have heard better balanced anti and pro-fracking arguments on NPR than anything I learned in this conventional tale of righteousness. The debate pits an ex-engineer, MIT graduate, greatly admired schoolteacher- Hal Holbrook as the voice of the fracking opposition who makes much more sense explaining the insidiou ...
Movie review: Promised Land Jan and I thought we would go see what kind of competition Matt Damon was going to give his bff Ben Affleck at the Oscars this year. It was interesting to see movie star Matt Damon team up with TV star John Krasinski to write and star in the Promised Land. The movie’s theme was recycled- big company taking advantage of small town residents facing tough economic times, and it definitely was a poor man's "Erin Brockovich." However, this was still a good movie in its own right. Matt plays the corporate shark who goes to the town to secure signatures from property owners for drilling rights. His work sidekick is, Frances Mcdormand, who tended to steal the scenes. She and Matt had really good chemistry, and her single mother storyline lent just the right amount of warmth to her curmudgeon character. John is the environmental antagonist to Matt's character, and he brings drama and humor to the storyline. Hal Holbrook played the well-respected science teacher and was excellent ...

The filming of the new movie coming out next year is complete. The name of the movie is called "Promised Land" and stars Matt Damon, Frances McDormond, Hal Holbrook and other top stars. My brother and I were cast as extras in this movie. I had a great time. Be sure to see it when it comes out at the end of this year or next year. I was in a lot of scenes and if I do not end up on the editing floor, I'm sure you will see my silly self throughout the movie. Promised Land!
