Interesting things to do in London over the Easter bank holiday weekend (April 17-21) - sun is shining in London and there's lots to do, so make the most of it if you can: there's an Easter egg hunt for kids at the Kensington Roof Gardens, while parents can enjoy the skyline views; it's Record Store Day on Saturday and there's a free street music party in Soho; there's a great exhibition at the Southbank by Martin Creed; and you can take tea in style at the Saatchi Gallery's café after a day of art gazing - plus loads more! Birkbeck is closed over the Easter Break so no events are planned - but there are great workshops at the next week to look forward to - www.bbk.ac.uk/events-calendar

Art and criticism never sleep so yesterday during the storm we went to galleries in Chelsea, the Upper East Side, and then to the Met. Saw some Bruce High Quality play-dough repros of Greek & Roman sculptures at the Met that I'd kill for to own; gaped at the six-hour lines waiting to go into the Kusama Infinity Room at Zwirner for 40-seconds. I kept telling these kids "It's not worth the wait; the Whitney owns one of these rooms; you can see it anytime you want." And then I'd show them my iPhone pics of the thing and they would happily get back on line. Next, uptown, saw two great shows: David Smith at Gagosian and then at Venus Over Manhattan a "Calder Shadows" show. Also the excellent Martin Creed show at H & W. Then for dinner and a few hours at the met. Turned out that in all the freezing snow and sleet I was in the mood for all of these scrumptious details. First is Fragonard, who looks good enough to eat - and is the greatest desert-maker in the history of art - I don't care about all you poo-poos w ...

Ethics from my upbringing. First and Second-hand Accounts of the Battle of Blair Mountain aka Redneck War of 1921 I told a lie when I was 4 years old. One that I remember well because of the consequences. One that I never claimed until my Sister was dead and gone, and I past 40 years of age. A large dog came around the corner at Grandmothers house one day. We all stopped to look at each other. I stomped at him saying "move". He looked at us and growled so I told my little sister to "hit that bad dog", and she did and he bit her. Within the space of a few minutes my Grandfather, Uncles, and young men of the family went to find that dog. I was frightened for the dog, crying for my sister, and knew deep down inside it was my fault for telling her to "hit that dog". They found the dog and shot him dead. I never said I was mean to that dog or that I told Sister to 'hit it' In talking about Blair Mountain and the times leading up to the 2nd largest insurrection in American history I ...

"WHAT EVERY VETERAN SHOULD KNOW" A MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY 2013 Celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—his faith, his courage, his humanity—is a time for one’s own self-reflection. This year, Dr. King’s birthday is the convergence of three milestone events marking America’s long march towards freedom and equality for all. One hundred-and-fifty years ago this month, President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863, ending the oppression of human bondage. Booker T. Washington would later recall that the first time he heard of the proclamation, he was standing at his mother’s side as it was read aloud. In Washington’s words: “After the reading we were told that we were all free, and could go when and where we pleased. My mother . . . leaned over and kissed her children . . . tears of joy ran down her cheeks. She explained to us . . . that this was the day for which she had been so long praying, ...

Great Ending to a Video Game Trilogy? I can't think of any... I can think of plenty of disappointing endings: Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed are examples of this. I guess to qualify you need to have an engaging story that pulls the player towards a climactic finale that does NOT disappoint. Any takers?
In the morning, as soon as you get out of bed, you are to make the sign of the holy cross and say: "God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit watch over me. Amen." Then, kneeling or standing, say the Apostles' Creed and the Lord's Prayer. If you wish, you may in addition recite this little prayer as well: "I give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected me through the night from all harm and danger. I ask that you would also protect me today from sin and all evil, so that my life and actions may please you. Into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen." After singing a hymn perhaps (for example, one on the Ten Commandments) or whatever else may serve your devotion, you are to go to your work joyfully. - Martin Luther, Morning Blessing

OPINIONS ON THE XCOM FPS (WARNING: I'M EXPRESSING MY OPINION :WARNING) (NO SERIOUSLY, I'M EXPRESSING MY OPINION.) Okay, so suddenly Xcom is going first person, and then maybe third person... But perspective change isn't always bad, remember Fallout 3 and metroid prime? In my personal opinion, get rid of the geometric enemies, bring back the *** sectoids and snakemen, come on, that's ridiculous. Also maybe add the enemies from Terror from the Deep, I mean the publisher is 2K, and they also published Bioshock! Remember that FPS set in the *Underwater city*? Also they should also bring back the enemies from apocalypse. In terms of gameplay, maybe mix the game Star wars: Republic commando, with the battlefield 2 rts-like mechanic in which you spot people on the map for your team, and that RTS-like component in Tom Clancy's: Advanced Warfighter where you press tab and make a squad member go where you want him to go. "I’m for the freedom of the twenty-two million Afro-Americans by any means necessary." This famous quote by Malcolm X during a December 1964 interview with Claude Lewis was made two months before he was assassinated. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little, on May 19, 1925, in Omaha Nebraska. His family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then to East Lansing, Michigan. One of ten children, he grew up poor, an eight grade drop out, with limited opportunity, during the Depression of the 1930’s. In Lansing, the KKK burned down the family home. His father, a member of the UNIA, (Marcus Garvey’s Universal *** Improvement Association), was murdered by racists. Malcolm Little left Michigan for Boston, Massachusetts, where he became a Pullman porter. He eventually left Boston for New York City. In New York, known as "Rhythm Red," sometimes as "Detroit Red," Malcolm Little began running numbers. He was busted for possession of stolen property, and was convicted and sentenced to 10 years. Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.. The following is a portion of the transcript: "Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teache ...

Davos prescriptions for the U.S. economy By Chrystia Freeland JANUARY 25, 2013 Email Print inShare DAVOS | LAWRENCE SUMMERS DAVOS, Switzerland – Get ready for a new elite consensus on the U.S. budget deficit. One of the functions of the World Economic Forum – decide for yourself whether this is a virtue or a vice – is to give the plutocrats a venue for figuring out their party line. Think of it as crowdsourcing for the 0.1 percent. For a long time, the conventional wisdom among this crew has been that the deficit and the debt were the United States’ chief economic problems. That’s why I wasn’t surprised when Martin Sorrell, the head of the global communications giant WPP, referred to the deficit as the country’s most important economic issue at a breakfast discussion he moderated at the forum this week. The conversation was off the record, but when I asked Sorrell if I could quote his comment, he happily doubled down: Not only was the deficit the United States’ most important economic woe ...

Father Martin Luther on "Going to Church" [From his commentary on the 3rd Article of the Apostle's Creed] For neither you nor I could ever know anything of Christ, or believe on Him, and obtain Him for our Lord, unless it were offered to us and granted to our hearts by the Holy Ghost through the preaching of the Gospel. The work is done and accomplished; for Christ has acquired and gained the treasure for us by His suffering, death, resurrection, etc. But if the work remained concealed so that no one knew of it, then it would be in vain and lost. That this treasure, therefore, might not lie buried, but be appropriated and enjoyed, God has caused the Word to go forth and be proclaimed, in which He gives the Holy Ghost to bring this treasure home and appropriate it to us. Therefore sanctifying is nothing else than bringing us to Christ to receive this good, to which we could not attain of ourselves. Learn, then, to understand this article most clearly. If you are asked: What do you mean by the words: I beli ...
Dear Christian, the worst and most unloving thing you can do for a Catholic is affirm them as a Christian. If you believe the RCC is part of the Body of Christ and Catholics are Christians with eternal life, you are not only deceived but you deceive your Catholic friends all in the name of "love and tolerance". The most loving thing you can do for the Catholic is tell them the truth that salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. If you yoke yourself in spiritual enterprise with Catholics in the name of saving babies, saving babies has become an idol for you and you have taken your eye off the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the biggest flaw in the pro-life movement, and God is not pleased with this ecumenical compromise. If this applies to you, I bid you to repent for your spiritual well-being and for the sake of your Catholic friends enslaved to Rome. p.s. this thread is not open for debate to argue the validity of the RCC.
I wonder why it is every Australia Day, they wheel out "Peter FitzSimons Ray Martin Harold Scrubbie" & any other so called Known name just to throw up the question about the flag that has served as our our flag for so long now. Why is there a need to change it? Ok we are not English we are a collective of many races & many cultures but because of this hardly any of the new citizens adapt to the way of life that has been created here, yes a lot of it is American based & english based, but as Australian born bred & raised we have developed our own unique style. Now I am not against any religion race colour or creed, but accept the fact that the reason you came here was to start a new life, not bring your old life & live it in a new enviroment. So to me The Australian flag represents Australains that have fought in conflicts under it's cover it also represents our sporting acheivments on the world stage i.e Olympics, it has been used when an Australain has conquered a massive goal like reaching a Mountain Pe ...

Why I Despise Racism When I was a boy, around 9 years of age, I brought a best friend from my third grade class home with me one afternoon after school. Doug was an amazing guy who wanted to be a professional soccer player someday. We had so much in common. In fact, to this day, I’ve met very few people that I ever bonded with faster than I did with Doug. When we got home, we we played football in the backyard; then some board games in my room. It was a great time with a great friend; but it was a friend my father was meeting for the first time. Needless to say, I was shocked and devastated when, after Doug left, my dad told me that Doug couldn’t come back to our house. I was totally perplexed. What possible reason could prevent him from being welcomed in our home? My father’s response, “He’s not one of us.” That was the first time I’d ever given one second’s thought to the color of my friend’s skin. I was as heartbroken as a nine-year-old boy could be. It was also the first ...

In the 21st century, perceiving yourself as primarily "Black" to the exclusion of individuality is tantamount to inserting a foot into an ideological bear trap, which will maim you. Hereafter dubbed "the Black trap", this act of tribal self-checking allows liberals of all colors to move us on the Am...
Good morning Family! So this week, our meditation verses were Acts 10:34-35. These scriptures show us that God is no respecter of persons. He honors those who honor His laws; no more, no less. Today, instead of writing a follow up devotional on “Meditation Monday” like I usually do, I want to switch it up and write a follow up question (in reference to Monday’s post) and see what kind of response there is. Now, Monday was Dr. King’s holiday and that’s why I was led to use scriptures concerning equality. Since you all were supposed to be meditating Acts 10:34-35 over the week, I want to ask you: “From a Christian perspective, how do you think that Dr. King’s message of equality and rights for all has effected the church?” Don’t be scared, there is no “wrong” or “right” answer, I just want to hear your thoughts because they matter to me! Love you all, be blessed, and have a great weekend!

So I was asking Morgan what she learned in school today. She said "Mrs. Lucas told us a sure way to make it snow so we get out of school on Monday". I said how do we do that? Morgan said "before we go to bed Sunday night, we have to turn our pajamas wrong side out so don't let me forget cause Mrs. Lucas really wants a day off!" So that is what she learned in social studies today!! Thanks Pat Lucas. At least you got through to one child!! ;)
