Did you know Hollywood classics Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe were both alums of Van Nuys High School? So cool!
Every time I watch this movie I can't tell who I love more, Jane Russell or Marilyn Monroe.
As long as it's the ghosts of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell and Rita Hayworth I wouldn't mind!
Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe were so amazing 😩
Time Machine: Hollywood At Night: Im sure many of us have seen this pic before but.what the hay? A couple actresses you might have heard of, Jane Russell (She's the brunette in case you were wondering) and Marilyn Monroe dip their hands in cement at Sid Grauman's Chinese Theater, mid 1950s. A wonderful frozen moment in time...
I'm watching Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Several things struck me. Starting with how much Jane Russell's figure, without being digitally enhanced, looks like Megan Fox (however she spells her name) having been severely photo shopped.Come to think of it, some of Megan Fox's plastic surgery makes he looked more like Jane Russell, too. Creepy! Err... to alter yourself and glom onto the career of a dead woman is creepy. She was doing fine as a mostly real, living human being before that. But, I digress ... The gym scene in the movie is one of the most startlingly dirty things I've ever seen. It's amazing what can be embarrasingly shocking, while mostly covered up (Jane Russell) and not even so much as staring lustfully, much less touching (a large supply of young men in almost flesh colored gym shorts). There is something about the way Marilyn Monroe moves her mouth that freaks me out. I know what it is. I can do it, if I bother to try. It's a way to keep your lips from flattening out while you are singing. It . ...
I went to Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell's handprints on Hollywood Blvd & they wrote "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"
All of my movie stars are either too old to act, play character parts now or are in the memories section of the Academy Awards. No more Paul Newman, Liz Taylor, Charlton Heston, Betty Grable, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Clark Gable, or Jimmy Stewart. Oh well, even 'tho they are old, I still love Robert Duval, Robert DeNiro, and Al Pacino. Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman are even getting more mature parts these days. If Tom Hanks gets grey, I'm quitting the movies. ha.
I was just thinking about Mickey Rooney this past week. Him and a few others like Doris Day who turned 90 this past week, and Clark Gable, James Garner, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Danny Kay, Ben Cosby, Fred Astaire, Betty Grabble, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemon, Jane Russell, Rita Hayworth they don't make movie stars like these any more.
“Original Hollywood Sign "H" piece of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell wow - amazing!

A little Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell to start your weekend: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
So, open question, out of the confirmed list.Liz Taylor, Janet Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Jane Russell, Esther Williams. Best Kiner, um, homer. I am going against the obvious and go with Jane Russell. Always been a fan.
I think this is more impressive than Jeter: Ralph Kiner : Kiner became friends with Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz living in Palm Springs. He dated Taylor, as but also actress Janet Leigh. Kiner was, as they say, a ladies man. He also was rumored to have dated Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner and Jane Russell. Tennis star Nancy Chaffee was one of his wives. Plus he was a great homerun hitter.
In this file photo, Jane Russell, right, and Marilyn Monroe commemorate their 1953 hit movie, "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds," in the favored Hollywood way, planting their hands in a slab of freshly poured cement in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. By no small coincidence both women attended Van Nuys High School.
Check out today's LA Times (12/19/13). Great article on Chuck Cecil, A VNHS Grad from the early 1940s who hung out with Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Baker) and Jane Russell. He was and still is an "old school" DJ who has a radio show called the "Swinging Years" featuring Big Band Music-classic guy! (He's on FB-"Chuck Cecil and the Swinging Years" or you can Google him. He has a Wikipedia page also.)
What ever happened to full figured women like Lynda Carter who was phenomenal as Wonder Wonder Woman. A gain Hollywood bring in a skinny little actress. Did Hollywood not learn from goddesses like Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Jane Mansfield, Elizabeth Taylor there's more women than just bones. Enhance and embrace the full figured woman!!!.

Marilyn Monroe: "I used to think as I looked out on the Hollywood night -there must be thousands of girls sitting alone like me, dreaming of becoming a movie star. But I’m not going to worry about them. I’m dreaming the hardest." Marilyn photos: One by photographer Samuel Shaw, one with actress Jane Russell, another with former husband Arthur Miller, Palm Springs statue of a giant Marilyn on a busy commercial street corner - the first statue photo was taken by my daughter Lori, the others by moi. An icon who, many believe, was smarter than her persona, yet, had a sensitive personality. She wanted to be taken seriously, but, as Jane Russell once said, Marilyn was so dreamy that one never knew if her shoes would match. I suppose that we think of her the way she left us long ago..

Astonishing difference to now. Women were encouraged to GAIN weight in the fifties! ( Possibly after a food-deprived twelve years of WAR many had become very skinny ). Sadly though this was no doubt so that they would appeal more to men who'd spent the war years wanking to pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

Loved Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Very silly, smutty and entertaining. Jane Russell imitating Marilyn Monroe is great fun.
A man is either a Jane Russell man or a Marilyn Monroe man. He can appreciate one while loving the other, but you can't adore them equally!
Marilyn Monroe's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" co-star and friend Jane Russell was a major sex symbol in the '40s and '50s. While she often wore outfits that emphasized her womanly figure, we love her bright, casual and covered-up look in this photo from 1955.
Taking my 'Exercise My Variety' thing to a whole 'nother level. About to watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe (1953). I have never seen any Marilyn Monroe's work. Just hear about her all the time. Kinda like like the Kardashians and most of the Braxtons. Anyway.Don't judge me for watchng this movie for whatever reason (not that I would care). Just not into the Olympics or 'Real Drama Housewives and Sisters Married To Or Dating Celebrities In The Big City Of Your Choice.'
Watching Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (the 1953 Howard Hawks musical with Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe). Its quite entertaining.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a 1953 film adaptation of the 1949 stage musical, released by 20th Century Fox, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, with Charles Coburn, Elliott Reid, Tommy Noonan, Taylor Holmes, and Norma Varden in supporting roles. The screenplay by Charles Lederer is augmented by the music of songwriting teams Hoagy Carmichael & Harold Adamson and Jule Styne & Leo Robin. The songs by Styne and Robin are from the Broadway show, while the songs by Carmichael and Adamson were written especially for the film.
Just saw Gentlemen Prefer Blondes again starring Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell. Best wardrobe in a movie!
Yes, I have spent the entire night watching Marilyn Monroe movies on TCM, despite having seen them all multiple times, AND owning copies of them all on DVD. I do the same with films starring Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, Katherine Hepburn, Mae West, Jane Russell, Rita Hayworth, etc. These are the films & actresses I love. Not to mention their leading men William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Carey Grant, and my first musical crush Howard Keel. I rarely see movies made in this century. Guess I really was born too late.
Twiggy and Danny La Rue perform as Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in the classic 'Two Little Girls From Little Rock'.
Can't understand a man preferring another man if Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Jane Russell were available.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) ** Dated musical comedy with winning performances by Jane Russell & Marilyn Monroe, several good setpieces.
I guess I'm not a gentleman because in every scene in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes I like Jane Russell much, much better than Marilyn Monroe. Even Janes version of Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend was better.
Stayed up all the way till 10 last night watching "The Great Escape"! Great movie with several great actors. Earlier, we watched "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ' with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. I had forgotten how good that one was!! Yep! Those girls were HOT!!!

When we left CPK after dinner, we noticed a bunch of people sitting on the grass over by the Marilyn Monroe statue, so we walked over to check it out. It turns out they were showing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, projecting it on the wall by the statue. We got there as Jane Russell was singing "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love", so we sat and watched for a while. It was so cool sitting there and watching the movie outside with all of these other people, with gorgeous weather and the Marilyn statue right there. It was truly a magical experience!
😄! Can't tell you how excited I am that finally someone else loves it as much as me!!! Yay!! Jane Russell & Marilyn Monroe! 😍
Jane Russell > Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. That's all the math I have for the day.
It's a shame that Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe only made one movie together. They got along incredibly well both on screen and off.

Max Allan Collins got the title of the book from a song Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell sing in Gentleman prefer blonds called Bye Bye baby
FILM FACT: The 1953 Twentieth Century-Fox thriller-film noir "Niagara", stars Joseph Cotten, Jean Peters & introduced Marilyn Monroe in her first major film appearance. Monroe was given first billing & stole the show from her co-stars. The film bolted her to a superstar status, & her following two films of that year, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", with Jane Russell, & "How to Marry a Millionaire", with Betty Grable & Lauren Bacall, were even bigger successes. The plot involves two couples visiting Niagara Falls, & tensions between one wife and her husband reach the level of murder. One major theme is that of sex and its destructiveness. Rose (Monroe) is a femme fatale, seductively dressed in tight clothes revealing her sensual figure. Her relationship with George (Cotton) combines the sexual, hypocritical, and scornful. One movie critic said of "Niagara", the falls and Miss Monroe are something to see."

For those who don't remember Jane Russell (or only associate her with Playtex Cross-Your-Heart bras/"The Outlaw"), I recommend watching one of the films in which she played a character much like herself. Good choices would be those in which she co-starred (at the peak of their careers) with her real-life buddy Robert Mitchum: His Kind of Woman (1951) and Macao (1952). Of course, she also starred with Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) and with Clark Gable in "The Tall Men" (1955).

Jane Russell is the last of the living Hollywood legends, a sultry ravenhaired temptress who costarred with Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, whose impressive embonpoint launched a thousand quips and who once inspired Bob Hope to introduce her as 'The two and only Jane Russell'.

Masterworks Broadway will release the Encores! cast recording of the classic musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Starring Megan Hilty - Sony recording artist and star of NBC’s Smash. The album will be recorded in New York City this week. The recent critically acclaimed Encores! production ran May 9 to May 13, 2012 at New York’s City Center. Frankly, I found it to be an underwhelming experience when Peggy and I saw it May 13. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes debuted on Broadway in 1926 , adapted from the novel by Anita Loos, featuring music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Leo Robin and book by Loos and Joseph Fields. It debuted at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 8, 1949, making a star of Carol Channing and ran 740 performances. It was made into a hit Howard Hawks 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.
Jane Russell sexy actress from the 40's& 50's!! She starred in the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", wit' Marilyn Monroe!!
For some reason the lyrics of a song from a very old film kept running through my brain. Bye bye baby. Remember you're my baby, when they give you the eye! -Jane Russell & Marilyn Monroe: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
in 1995 we were contacted by a company Greene and Hagstrom who were the first breeders of butterfly koi, they had 5 retired breeding females they wanted to sell, we bought all 5 we named them after the buxom movies of the 50's we had Anita Ekbert, Jane Russell, Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Haworth, they were black and orange big girls. We sold Jane Mansfield to the people who owned the cemetary that Mansfield was buried in. we sold the others but we kept Jane Russell, until today, she was a Grand Ole girl, she finally passed, she was a real sweet and gentle fish, the public loved her, she was 27 inches long and she weighed 14 ponds, she was a pure lady, she swam gracefully, she endured many cold and hots extremes, and lived through it, but today she gave up. She was approx 50 years old. thanks ole girl for gracing our ponds all these years, love ya and miss ya, I will miss that big gaping mouth looking for food, thanks Jane Russell you were and still are a lady
Jane Russell! Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe co-starred in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” in 1953, and soon became close friends. Russell later described Monroe as "very shy and very sweet and far more intelligent than people gave her credit for.”
Sara, from NYC asks: Who is my favorite movie actress? Gee, that's a tough one Sara, I like so many for so many different reasons. Bette Davis, for always giving us a great performance, Syd Charrisse, for interesting, dancing, Doris Day, for song, dance, drama, comedy, Jane Russell, for tough broad beauty, Rita Hayworth, for "Gilda", Patrica Neal for that sexy raspy, voice in "Fountainhead" Marilyn Monroe for playing the dumb blond in "How To Marry A Millionaire",, Barbara Stanwyck for wild and screaming acting, Kim Novak for soft beauty and "Vertigo" Last but never least Judy Holliday, a very over looked funny lady. I truly feel that every actor or actress has given in their own way gifts to us to enjoy forever.
