When I watched Gentlemen Prefer Blondes the other day I realized that Uma Thurman looks a lot like Marilyn Monroe.
We usually don’t cover red carpet events, but this outfit was too interesting not to write about it. Yesterday Lana Del Rey attended the Golden Globes 2015, where she was nominated for her Big Eyes song from the Tim Burton movie soundtrack. She stunned the audience wearing a vintage Travilla seafoam green dress, a dress I would have identified with my eyes closed. William Travilla designed most of the costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe in her films, including the infamous gold pleated dress, originally intended to appear in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). In the movie you can see the dress from behind: it was considered too racy because of its plunging neckline, so it didn’t get a front shot.

The Smith-Cotton class of 1953's yearly luncheon takes place on Saturday. What did high school students do in 1953? Sang along with Tony Bennett on the hit "Rags to Riches." Went to the Saturday matinee and paid .10 to .20 a ticket to see Disney's "Peter Pan" or Marilyn Monroe in "How to Marry A Millionaire" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Maybe they worked at a job where the minimum wage was .75 an hour. At that rate they couldn't have purchased the first color TV sets that went on sale in 1953 for $1,175. Wishing the class of 1953 a happy afternoon remembering those days!

It is FASCINATING watching Natasha Romanov's interrogation of Loki in light of Marilyn Monroe's performance in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."
I'm watching Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Several things struck me. Starting with how much Jane Russell's figure, without being digitally enhanced, looks like Megan Fox (however she spells her name) having been severely photo shopped.Come to think of it, some of Megan Fox's plastic surgery makes he looked more like Jane Russell, too. Creepy! Err... to alter yourself and glom onto the career of a dead woman is creepy. She was doing fine as a mostly real, living human being before that. But, I digress ... The gym scene in the movie is one of the most startlingly dirty things I've ever seen. It's amazing what can be embarrasingly shocking, while mostly covered up (Jane Russell) and not even so much as staring lustfully, much less touching (a large supply of young men in almost flesh colored gym shorts). There is something about the way Marilyn Monroe moves her mouth that freaks me out. I know what it is. I can do it, if I bother to try. It's a way to keep your lips from flattening out while you are singing. It . ...

A little Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell to start your weekend: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
Marilyn Monroe is my absolute favorite actress. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "How To Marry A Millionaire" are my favorite movies.
Marilyn Monroe (Gal of Crisis) (Norma Jeane Mortenson; 1 June 1926 to 5 August 1962) An American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946 with Twentieth Century-Fox. Her early film appearances were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve(both 1950), drew attention. By 1952 she had her first leading role in Don't Bother to Knock and 1953 brought a lead in Niagara, a melodramatic film noir that dwelt on her seductiveness. Her "dumb blonde" persona was used to comic effect in subsequent films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955). Limited by typecasting, Monroe studied at the Actors Studio to broaden her range. Her dramatic performance in Bus Stop (1956) was hailed by critics a ...

George Chakiris (born September 16, 1934) is an American dancer, singer and Academy Award-winning actor. He is best known for his appearance in the film version of West Side Story as Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang. Life and career Chakiris was born in Norwood, Ohio, to Steven and Zoe (née Anastasiadou) Chakiris, immigrants from Greece. Chakiris studied at the American School of Dance. Chakiris made his film debut in 1947, in the chorus of Song of Love. For several years he appeared in small roles, usually as a dancer or a member of the chorus in various musical films. He was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and appeared as a dancer alongside Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas, in the "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me" number. Goodness me! I nearly let today's birthday girl slip past me! The marvelous Carol Channing is 92 years young today. Other than her adorable personality and unique singing style, Carol is most famous for originating the roles of Lorelei Lee in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi in "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway. The roles were played in the movies by Marilyn Monroe and Barbra Streisand respectively. In 1984, 20 years after "Hello, Dolly" knocked 'em dead, she reached the pinnacle of her career and appeared on "Sesame Street" ;-) To the tune of the musical's title song, she sang "Hello, Sammy!" to Jim Henson's Sammy the Snake. song: (1979 Royal Variety Performance for The Queen) Bonus! Live Life Intensely. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" I'm single. A very famous film producer from Hollywood wants me to act in one of his movies. I cook the best lamb. I love to bake. I was engaged to a Prince from Spain. A gentleman told me that I reminded him of Marilyn Monroe and Sofia Loren. How nice of him to say that. I have never been married. I have an amazing sense of humor. I like this famous quote I know I know nothing, Socrates. I also like the saying in Spanish: "la mujer debe ser re bonita, re limpia y re mujer" y el hombre debe ser fuerte y formal." The people that know me tell me that I am like the woman from Proverbs 31; I am not married; she was. I went to UT Austin. I'm studying to be a Doctor in Speech Pathology. Marilyn Monroe's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" co-star and friend Jane Russell was a major sex symbol in the '40s and '50s. While she often wore outfits that emphasized her womanly figure, we love her bright, casual and covered-up look in this photo from 1955.

Marilyn Monroe - Diamond's are a girl's best friend (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes OST)
When we left CPK after dinner, we noticed a bunch of people sitting on the grass over by the Marilyn Monroe statue, so we walked over to check it out. It turns out they were showing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, projecting it on the wall by the statue. We got there as Jane Russell was singing "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love", so we sat and watched for a while. It was so cool sitting there and watching the movie outside with all of these other people, with gorgeous weather and the Marilyn statue right there. It was truly a magical experience!

I'm watching old interviews with Ayumi Hamasaki from her pre-A Song for XX era. It's easy to see why she felt the need to do the "Ayumi Hamasaki is not stupid" All Night Nippon radio show... she has a sort of Marilyn Monroe ishness to her, in that she... you can tell she's putting on the spaceyness and that it's not real. The airy voice, the big eyes. She looks and sounds so much like Marilyn in "The Seven-Year Itch" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" that it's almost funny. I'm glad she shed that persona later, but it did stick in the public's mind for years afterwards. I never really watched these before so when people said "Ayu seems stupid" I really had no idea *** they were talking about. o_O!

Masterworks Broadway will release the Encores! cast recording of the classic musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Starring Megan Hilty - Sony recording artist and star of NBC’s Smash. The album will be recorded in New York City this week. The recent critically acclaimed Encores! production ran May 9 to May 13, 2012 at New York’s City Center. Frankly, I found it to be an underwhelming experience when Peggy and I saw it May 13. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes debuted on Broadway in 1926 , adapted from the novel by Anita Loos, featuring music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Leo Robin and book by Loos and Joseph Fields. It debuted at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 8, 1949, making a star of Carol Channing and ran 740 performances.
