A short time later, 102.9 FM plays "Wedding Bell Blues" by the Fifth Dimension. I've been hearing this song for over forty years (there, I said it; I'm old) and it still gives me goosebumps. This song was initially written and performed by a nineteen year old Laura Nyro way back in 1966 (nineteen years old! What talent!), but hearing Marilyn McCoo sing it with her remarkably sweet voice still gets to me.
Happy 70th Birthday to Singer & Songwriter Marilyn McCoo (Center) of the legendary Vocal Group The 5th Dimension. The 5th Dimension is an American popular music vocal group, whose repertoire also includes pop, R&B, soul, and jazz. Originally known as The Hi-Fi's, the group changed its name to The 5th Dimension in late 1966 and was best-known during the late 1960s and early 1970s for popularizing the hits "Up, Up and Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In", "Wedding Bell Blues", "One Less Bell to Answer", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All", and The Magic Garden LP. The five original members were Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson. They have recorded for several different labels over their long careers. Their first work appeared on the Soul City label, which was started by Imperial Records/United Artists Records recording artist Johnny Rivers. The group would later record for Bell/Arista Records, ABC Records, and Motown Records. So ...

Today, I watched a rerun of "It Takes A Thief" from 1970. This episode guest starred the 5th Dimension with Marilyn McCoo being the group member that faked her own death. Other guest stars included Joseph Cotten, Beah Richards, George Murdock (the Fat Man from "The Mack"), engineer-producer Bones Howe and the group's manager Marc Gordon (Florence LaRue's then-husband). It was interesting to hear mixes of "Puppet Man" without the horns and "One Less Bell To Answer", without the strings. There was a plot to murder a visiting foreign dignitary. A bomb was supposed to explode inside of a glass figurine by way of a coda containing three chords added to "One Less Bell To Answer." The three chords were G flat 9th over D, an augmented G7th with a flatted 9th and c6 over B flat with an added 11th and 13th. Personally, I think they could have picked 3 better chords, because they did not fit the song with starts in F major 7 and ends in B flat major 7. The show's producer must have been tone deaf. Good episode regard ...

Yeah... I was trying to say that we need to work hard if we are to succeed to break through the illusions of the media, the political and economical system. Nothing changes if we just sit and let things unfold on their own because our perception of reality changes the reality itself.

February offered lots of good music at Busch Gardens - we've seen performances by Paul Revere & The Raiders, Sha Na Na, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. and Herman's Hermits w/Peter Noone today. Fantastic performances that brought back lots of good memories from years past!
I woke up early! And in a good mood! This has not been the case lately. I credit the following: 1) it's March 1st and winter is receding. I couldn't say things like that in Chicago, where single digit temps lasted until May, but here I have more faith spring is coming - it will be in the low 60s all of next weekend! (Don't hate.) 2) I sat Last Night with a buddhist episcopal priest, my second time going to a sitting in 2 weeks. It's nice to meditate with company again, especially when they're my neighbors. 3) I laughed a lot Last Night with Ange Anderson and Jeff Lamicela while watching one of my favorite episodes of ST:TNG. (Don't judge.) 4) I'm taking the MBlex today! It's a computerized multiple choice test and my brain treats those like trivia games, so I find them weirdly pleasurable. I'm a little nervous but mostly excited to get it over with so I can apply for my state license to practice. Plus I won't have to study anymore, like I've been doing so manically this past week. 5) I don't have a fifth ...

November 8 Elton John becomes godfather to John and Yoko Lennon's son, Sean. 1974: November 8 After appearing at the Westbury Music Fair in New York, Connie Francis is assaulted at knifepoint in her hotel room. Although she would win a three million dollar lawsuit, Connie would not perform again until 1981. 1969: November 8 "Wedding Bell Blues" topped the Billboard Hot 100, giving The Fifth Dimension their second US number one record. The song was originally recorded as a private joke between group members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., who were engaged at the time. November 8 On the second date of their US tour, The Rolling Stones break the Los Angeles concert gross record held by The Beatles since 1966. They added an extra date to their L.A. As we wrap up September, my sincere condolences go to the derath of Andy Williams. He was a great singer. Before I started school, I remember watch THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW on NBC Saturday nights. One singer who hits a milestone on Monday is Marilyn McCoo at 70. She knows how to take care of herself thanks to her faith in God. Earlier this week Janie Fricke, Olivia Newton-John and Lynn Anderson all had birthdays. And POLICE WOMAN Angie turns 81 on Sunday. She's the same age as Barbara Walters. Greg Brady and Fran Dresher (I call her Fran Dwesher) and Jenna Elfman celebrate. I want to honor two African-Americans who are Libra in September, Bryant Gumbel and Johnny Mathis.
