PART TWO: WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING Real and Metaphorical Wounds from the Wrong Side of Idolatry: Rock Stars’ Ex-Lovers Move Beyond Their Historical Footnotes By Alexandra Molotkow For the teenage Des Barres, being a rock star’s girlfriend might have seemed to promise the glories of rock stardom itself: the admiration of millions, sexual gratification (the reason so many men pick up guitars in the first place), and the opportunity to inspire great work, whether by chipping in or just gracefully exhaling. As Echols notes, Rolling Stone’s first real acknowledgment of women in rock was a special issue on groupies (in which Des Barres is featured). “All I knew was that I wanted to be somebody,” writes Bebe Buell, singer and former rock girlfriend (who partly inspired the character Penny Lane in Almost Famous), in her 2001 memoir, Rebel Heart: An American Rock ’n’ Roll Journey, written with Victor Bockris. “That somebody resembled Anita Pallenberg, Pattie Boyd, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Fonda, B ...

Top 10 True Rock Music Stories Written by Bryan Johnson Rock music is littered with hundreds of myths about musicians. Some of the most famous examples include stories that have been exaggerated and made popular by the media. It can be difficult to sort out fact from fiction when dealing with the turbulent history of famous rock stars as the stories are often falsified. THE Rolling Stones...CIRCUS The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is a film of a concert by The Rolling Stones recorded on December 11, 1968 and goes on sale in 1996. The event comprised two concerts on a circus stage which included presentations from The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and Jethro Tull. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were part of supergroup called The Dirty Mac , along with Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell and Keith Richards. It was originally supposed to be issued by the BBC television network , but the Rolling Stones were refused. They said they did so because of their poor performance at the show, because they had taken the stage when the sun was rising and were clearly exhausted. Many others believe that the real reason for not disclosing the video was that The Who, who had recently completed a concert tour , upstaged the Stones with their own producción.Los Stones had not toured at some time and therefore not were in the best conditions for their performance will be like that o ...

Marianne Faithfull is 67 years old today. An English singer, songwriter and actress whose career has spanned five decades, Faithfull’s early work in pop and rock music in the 1960s was overshadowed by her struggle with drug abuse in the 1970s. During the first two-thirds of that decade, she produced only two little-noticed studio albums. After a long commercial absence, she returned late in 1979 with the highly acclaimed album, Broken English. Faithfull's subsequent solo work, often critically acclaimed, has at times been overshadowed by her personal history. From 1966 to 1970, she had a highly publicized romantic relationship with Rolling Stones' lead singer, *** Jagger. She co-wrote "Sister Morphine," which is featured on the Stones' Sticky Fingers album. Faithfull was born in Hampstead, London. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who was later to become his wife. At the time the couple were lovers, although MacColl was married to someone else. The song entered the pop mainstream when it was released by Peter, Paul and Mary (Album: See What Tomorrow Brings, 1965), and was later recorded by Roberta Flack, in 1972. The Flack version was much slower than the original: an early solo recording by Seeger, for example, clocked in at two and a half minutes long, whereas Flack's is more than twice that length. It was subsequently covered by numerous other artists. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" has been covered by numerous artists such as Joe and Eddie, Elvis Presley, George Michael, Marianne Faithfull, Kate Havnevik, the Kingston Trio, Harry Belafonte, June Tabor, the Chad Mitchell Trio-Mike Kobluk solo, Gordon Lightfoot, Vern Gosdin, Shirley Bassey, Steven Houghton, Bert Jansch, Maria Taylor, The Easy Club, ...

About the song... "Sympathy for the Devil" is a song by The Rolling Stones which first appeared as the opening track on their 1968 album Beggars Banquet. It was written by *** Jagger and credited to Jagger/Richards. Rolling Stone magazine placed it at in their list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "Sympathy for the Devil" was written by *** Jagger and Keith Richards, though the song was largely a Jagger composition. The working title of the song was "The Devil Is My Name", and it is sung by Jagger as a first-person narrative from the point of view of Lucifer. In the 2012 BBC documentary Crossfire Hurricane, Jagger stated that his influence for the song came from Baudelaire and from the Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita (which had just appeared in English translation in 1967). The book was given to him by Marianne Faithfull. In a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone, Jagger said, "I think that was taken from an old idea of Baudelaire's, I think, but I could be wrong. The GREASE BAND: (S/T) 1971 & "Amazing Grease" 1975 AMG Artist Biography by Bruce Eder The Grease Band was probably the most well-known backing group of the late 1960s: lionized in the British music press as the group playing behind Joe Cocker, and admired by critics and rival musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, they emerged to a brief flurry of activity in their own right at the start of the '70s, as well as backing Marianne Faithfull in her first significant solo work of the '70s. The band's roots go back to the mid-'60s and Joe Cocker's initial rise to fame, and there were several early configurations of the group as Joe Cocker's Grease Band before the classic lineup took shape in 1968. Cocker had just taken a year off from music, after several abortive attempts, and needed a new backing group -- bassist Chris Stainton became the core of what became known as Joe Cocker's Grease Band, a name he reportedly chose based on a statement he'd read by jazz organist Jimmy Smith, praising a musician for "ha ...

45 years ago the Rolling Stones' recorded "Sympathy for the Devil" at London’s Olympic Sound Studios on June 4-5 and June 8-10, with the famous "woo woo" backing vocals overdubbed later in Los Angeles by Keith Richard's girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg. The song perpetuated the image of the group as the bad boys, as opposed to the clean-cut Beatles. The lyrics were inspired by The Master and Margarita, a book by Mikhail Bulgakov, given to *** Jagger by British singer Marianne Faithfull who was his girlfriend at the time. Faithfull came from an upper-class background and exposed Jagger to a lot of new ideas. In the book, the devil is a sophisticated socialite, a "man of wealth and taste." Jagger claims the song is about the dark side of man, not a celebration of Satanism. Jagger said, "It has a very hypnotic groove, a samba, which has a tremendous hypnotic power, rather like good dance music. It doesn't speed up or down. It keeps this constant groove. Plus, the actual samba rhythm is a great one to sing on, ...

'When you cut into the present the future leaks out.' - William Burroughs The Cut-Up Method was 'invented' by the artist Brion Gysin and popularized by his friend William Burroughs. It had roots in Dadaism, whose Tristan Tzara threatened to create a poem by drawing random words from a hat. Creating a Cut-Up involves taking a given text and cutting it into single words, sentences, or paragraphs. The cut up texts are then rearranged by the artist – the creator of the new work. This groundbreaking anthology features new and historic Cut-Ups by new and established artists, such as Cabell McLean, Dave Mitchell, Matthew Levi Stevens Kenji Siratori, Joe Ambrose, Gary J Shipley, Christopher Nosnibor, A.D. On March 3rd a benefit concert will take place in Vicar Street in Dublin for guitarist and singer Henry McCullough who suffered a heart attack in November 2012 and has suffered permanent damage. In 1971 Paul McCartney asked Henry to join his post Beatles band Wings and his ad lib solo on the song My Love is considered one of the great guitar solos. Henry spent 2 years in the band but quit Wings in 1973 and went on to play in The Frankie Miller Band before recording his first solo album for George Harrison’s Dark Horse label. Sessions with Marianne Faithfull, Donovan, Spooky Tooth, Eric Burdon and Dr. Feelgood, among many others, followed. In the mid 80’s Henry returned to Dublin and joined The Fleadh Cowboys before resuming his solo career and writing and recording a number of records. Robert Wolfe Quine (December 30, 1942 – May 31, 2004) was an American guitarist, known for his innovative guitar solos. A native of Akron, Ohio, Quine worked with a wide range of musicians, though he himself remained relatively unknown in comparison. Critic Mark Demming writes "Quine's eclectic style embraced influences from jazz, rock, and blues players of all stripes, and his thoughtful technique and uncompromising approach led to rewarding collaborations with a number of visionary musicians." Among those musicians were the likes of Lou Reed, Brian Eno, Marc Ribot, Marianne Faithfull, Lloyd Cole, Tom Waits (Rain Dogs), Matthew Sweet and Lester Bangs. Bangs once said of him: Someday Quine will be recognized for the pivotal figure that he is on his instrument — he is the first guitarist to take the breakthroughs of early Lou Reed and James Williamson and work through them to a new, individual vocabulary, driven into odd places by obsessive attention to On the Corner-era Miles Davis. Quine was a nephew ...

saw: Hamlet, starring Nicol Williamson as Hamlet, Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia, Anthony Hopkins as Claudius. They've cut half the play--this film is 1hr 53min. Therefore, character development is ruined--Hamlet becomes a less believable character. I've seen Nicol Williamson play Macbeth in the BBC version, and he did that well. Here, too much has been torn away from the part. Also, he looks too old for the part. Hamlet is supposed to be a college student at the beginning of the play, and about 30 when it ends, but Nicol Williamson looks definitely older than that. (And Hamlet's college friend, Horatio, has a gray beard.) Still, Nicol does the scene very believably where he tries to convince his mother (although she looks a witch) that she was wrong to marry Claudius. He weeps in distress, which is better than Derek Jacobi does the seen in the BBC version. Marianne Faithful doesn't play a good Ophelia--she seems the same before and after she's lost her mind. And at the beginning, when she's assuri ...
Love letters written by *** Jagger to American actress Marsha Hunt during the summer of 1969 have been auctioned by Sothebys for more than twice the expected sum. An unidentified buyer paid over $300K for 10 passionate, revealing letters that came during a time of much turbulence for the Rolling Stones frontman. In fact “turbulent” is an understatement. In the weeks and months before penning the missives during the shooting of the movie ‘Ned Kelly’ in Australia, Jagger had fired and buried guitarist Brian Jones and watched his relationship with singer Marianne Faithfull slowly fall apart. It seems like his secret affair with Hunt was something he leaned on during a difficult time. They dated in secret and eventually had a child together before separating. Hunt, who inspired the band’s 1971 hit ‘Brown Sugar,’ was an American-born actress and model who was enjoying success in London as the star of ‘Hair.’ She graced the cover of many magazines and was eventually asked by the band to appea ...
