Van Gaal TO WIELD THE AXE? Radamel Falcao, Robin Van Persie, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Rafael Da Silva could all leave Manchester United this summer as manager Louis Van Gaal prepares for another mass clear-out, according to the Guardian. All six players have entered the final 18 months of their contracts at Old Trafford and have yet to sign new deals at the club. David De Gea is also among the players to have entered the later stages of his contract, but United are confident he will commit his future to the club. They are not confident, however, over the futures of Van Persie, Evans, Jones, Smalling and Rafael. The club expect this summer to feature another exodus of players, similarly to when Van Gaal arrived at the club in July 2014 where 15 players were either sold or allowed to leave on loan. Falcao’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has added to the uncertainty surrounding his client’s future. He said: "What we do know is that he will play in one of the very best clubs in the world next se ...

League: Phil Jones says Manchester United can still catch leaders ... - SkySports
Phil Jones feels only fine margins stand between Manchester United and an elusive third away win of the 2014/15 season. The New Year's Day trip to Stoke City resulted in a third successive draw on the road for the Reds, who were previously held 1-1 at Aston Villa and 0-0 at Tottenham during the congested Christmas schedule. United manager Louis Van Gaal had pointed out in his pre-match Press Conference that his team have only beaten Arsenal and Southampton away in the campaign to date. Reflecting on why Stoke's name was not added to that list, Jones told ManUtd.com: "We played well in parts but probably didn't create as many chances as we would have liked. I think the draw's a fair result in the end." When asked what might be needed to turn potentially costly away draws into valuable victories, Jones suggested: "I think it's maybe just the final pass, the final ball. But we'll evaluate everything we've done at Stoke and we'll try to improve." The 1-1 draw with Mark Hughes' side represents an improvement o ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has conceded that his side are still doing "very bad things" despite beating Newcastle.United remain 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea following the 3-1 win over Alan Pardew's men at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with Van Gaal's side ultimately easing to victory. Wayne Rooney, playing from a midfield role, scored twice for the hosts, with Robin Van Persie netting the other as United recorded their seventh win from their last eight Premier League games. Substitute Papiss Cisse converted a late penalty after Phil Jones had tripped Jack Colback and, although that proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Newcastle, Van Gaal feels his men are still doing a lot wrong. He told BT Sport: "We make progress in every game, but we are also doing very bad things in every game. "We have to improve that. But I am satisfied because we are dominating most of our games, not always winning, but that is coming." Despite the 10-point gap behind leaders Chelsea, cap ...

After picking up 19 different injuries or illnesses since joining Manchester United, Phil Jones says he is doing his best to avoid absences in the future
5 REASONS WHY Manchester UniTED WILL WIN THE English Premier League 1 Louis Van Gaal The man with the new philosophy to imbue and a run of injuries that threatens to destabilise his progress is illustrating just how he obtained his glittering CV. To recover from failing to win once in the opening four matches – the trot included a 4-0 Capital One Cup thumping at MK Dons – to have Manchester United perched loftily in third, only eight points behind Chelsea, is the firmest of proof of Van Gaal’s managerial acumen. A mantra heard nearly as often as his players having to understand his philosophy is the Dutchman’s declaration: “I am a perfectionist.” The logical conclusion, then, is that United will only become better under him. 2 Ander Herrera showing signs of being a proper central midfielder for United The Spaniard has endured an up-and‑down start to his Old Trafford career but in recent weeks has been quick‑thinking, quick-footed and quick up the park to join the attack and indicate United ...

Manchester United swept historic arch-rivals Liverpool aside with a fine 3-0 win to record the Reds’ sixth consecutive victory. Goals from Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata gave Louis Van Gaal’s side the comfort of a two-goal lead before half-time, with Robin Van Persie clinching all three points after the break. But United were once again indebted to goalkeeper David De Gea, who made the first of several crucial saves seconds before Rooney’s opener. A magnificent effort to touch a Mario Balotelli shot onto his bar at 2-0 kept the frustrated visitors at bay, and even after Van Persie had sealed the game, De Gea was using his body and feet to prevent any kind of consolation goal for the Merseysiders. Injuries to Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo forced Louis Van Gaal to again make changes in the United backline and he opted for the experience of Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans. They faced a Liverpool side playing without a recognised striker - Raheem Sterling operated as a “false nine” - and wi ...
Jonny Evans could start for Manchester United after replacing the injured Chris Smalling during the first half of Monday's win at Southampton. The quintet of Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Rafael, Phil Jones and Daley Blind remain on the sidelines. Liverpool's Adam Lallana is available despite having two cracked ribs, while Kolo Toure (groin) should be fit. Mario Balotelli has returned to training and could be involved after a six-match absence with a groin injury. Many wise old sages have stated that it's better to be a lucky manager than a good one, and Manchester United's latest win at Southampton on Monday will have had some thinking that in Louis Van Gaal, they might just have both together. His record shows he's good - very, very good - but to see his team win with a performance the Dutchman put mildly himself as "not good enough" suggested being somewhat blessed too. Others went much further, and the numbers backed them up: United had three shots on goal - their fewest in a league game since Opta start ...
Louis Van Gaal has confirmed Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is fit to play against Southampton on Monday evening after recovering from the knee injury that ruled him out of the midweek victory over Stoke City. Argentinian playmaker Angel Di Maria will not feature at St Mary’s Stadium, though, so that he can recover from the hamstring injury sustained in the first half of last weekend’s Barclays Premier League win over Hull City at Old Trafford. While speaking to MUTV about Di Maria's injury, Van Gaal gave a positive update on the no.7: "It's not a bad injury, but I am not a doctor. I have to say it like a manager, not like a doctor. But I think he shall recover very quickly." Continuing the team news theme, Jonny Evans is fit for action and Phil Jones has returned to full training but the manager suggests the latter may have to play for the Reserves before returning to the first team. "Evans is coming back. He is fit to play. Jones is coming back but not fit to play. He needs training sessions ...
Manchester United v Hull (Kick-Off 3:00 p.m. UK / 4:00 Nigeria) Manchester United pair Radamel Falcao and Marcos Rojo could return from calf and shoulder injuries respectively to face Hull on Saturday. Jonny Evans played for the reserves this week but is expected to remain on the sidelines with Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Rafael and Daley Blind. Hull forward Abel Hernandez will miss the trip to United in order to be at the birth of his child in Uruguay. The suspended Gaston Ramirez is the only other absentee for Hull. MATCH PREVIEW It was interesting to listen to Ryan Giggs this week talking to BBC Radio 5 live about the similarities between Louis Van Gaal and Sir Alex Ferguson in terms of intensity and preparation, and how Van Gaal demands the same sort of intensity in training as in a game. "He sets standards and if you drop below them he is not happy," Giggs said. I don't doubt that for one minute, but he'll have been happy enough to have seen his injury-hit team win at Arsenal last week with an inexperienc ...
Five questions in advance of Arsenal vs. Manchester United By Nick Miller Nick Miller looks at five key talking points regarding Saturday's clash between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates. 1. Who is going to play in defence for Manchester United? United manager Louis Van Gaal must be wondering what he did to anger whichever cruel god has cursed his Manchester United side this season. United's defence has been shaky at the best of times since he took over, but Van Gaal will go into Saturday's game with Marcos Rojo definitely out, and major doubts hanging over Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Rafael. Van Gaal might be forced to play a winger in Antonio Valencia at right back, central defender Tyler Blackett at left back, and in the middle, two of Chris Smalling, Paddy McNair or Michael Carrick. Smalling has looked little short of a liability at various points this season, McNair is a teenager with a handful of games under his belt and Carrick is a midfielder, who actually might be required ...
Your challenge is to name a more unlikely, ill-fitting and patched-up Manchester United back-four than the pair of midfielders and two 19-year-olds who ended up defending David De Gea’s net against the league champions and noisy neighbours on the other side of town. Antonio Valencia, who started right-back here, is a right winger. Michael Carrick, who came on as an emergency centre-back, is a holding midfielder. And Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair are both teenagers. Necessity, of course, once Chris Smalling had decided that one aberration really ought to be followed up with another (injuries are another mitigating factor). But how the club of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, of Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand, have had to embrace such extreme ad-libbing is now the most pressing question in Louis Van Gaal’s jerky first campaign. LVG, as we know him, was without Rafael, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans. With respect to those players, it would hardly compare to Chelsea losing John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivano ...
MOUNTING INJURY CRISIS AND RISING HOPE OF RETURN OF PLAYERS IN Old Trafford. The wish and expectation of Manchester United club and its fan is the quick recovery and return of the trio of Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Phil Jones to the team. The high hope is most expected now, especially as the Red Devils look forward to the crucial clash with their arch rival, Manchester City on Sunday. According to the Telegraph, the Red Devils skipper suffered a foot injury during training and was seen limping off the training ground. Rooney has just completed his three match ban following the red card he picked for lashing out against Stewart Downing during the game against West Ham United. The captain was expected to return to his club for the Manchester Derby, but is now doubtful after picking up the injury in training. Report has it that the Three Lions captain who attended a commercial event at Old Trafford was seen in considerable discomfort at the end of the occasion with the rest of the first-team members .. ...

Man U vs Chelsea Super Sunday: Will Manchester United end Chelsea's unbeaten run? By James Ogunjimi Tomorrow, Sunday 26th October 2014, against Chelsea, Manchester United will attempt to repeat a feat they performed 10 years ago when they halted the invincible Arsenal's 49-match unbeaten run. On Sunday October 24, 2004, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side, boasting a 49-match unbeaten run including 3 wins against Chelsea fell to a determined Manchester United side, thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Van Nistelrooy. Like it happened 10 years ago when Manchester United skipper, Roy Kaene missed the Arsenal clash because he had the flu, Manchester United skipper, Wayne Rooney will miss the Chelsea clash because of a 3-match ban he's serving for an attack on West Ham's Stewart Downing. PLAYERS Chelsea's defence led by veteran John Terry would certainly prove difficult to penetrate, but then, no defence is unlockable. With Azpilicueta suspended, it would look even more vulnerable. A midfield of Matic, Fabregas, .. ...

More injury snag for United as McNair ruled out for three weeks Manchester United defender Paddy McNair has been ruled out three weeks with a hamstring injury. McNair, 19, deputised at centre-back in the recent Premier League victories over West Ham and Everton at Old Trafford after a defensive injury crisis hit United. The youngster, who excelled in both games alongside Marcos Rojo, was expected to be handed a Northern Ireland call-up ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers with Faroe Islands and Greece. It leaves United boss Louis Van Gaal in a real predicament after summer signing Luke Shaw also picked up a knee injury on Sunday, although he is expected to have at least one of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones available for their next clash at West Brom. Tyler Blackett also returned from suspension as a late substitute against Everton
Manchester United vs Everton Head-to-head league record: Manchester United wins 74, draws 40, Everton wins 56 Manchester United Captain Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United's home game against former club Everton because of suspension. Defender Tyler Blackett is back from his ban, but manager Louis Van Gaal has said 19-year-old Paddy McNair will keep his place in the starting XI following his impressive debut against West Ham. Jonny Evans (ankle), Chris Smalling (thigh), Phil Jones (hamstring), Ashley Young (groin), Michael Carrick (ankle), Jesse Lingard (knee), Ander Herrera (rib) and James Wilson (leg) are out, but there is a slim chance Marouane Fellaini could be on the bench after he recovered from an ankle problem. Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal insists that Phil Jones and Maroune Fellaini still not fit to play on Sunday and wont be risked.
Chris Smalling has joined Phil Jones and Jonny Evans among the injured center backs at Manchester United.
Manager Louis Van Gaal said Manchester United have only one senior centre-back available for Saturday's Premier League game against West Ham. Marcos Rojo is fit, but Chris Smalling (leg), Phil Jones (hamstring) and Jonny Evans (ankle) are injured and Tyler Blackett is suspended. Van Gaal said: "All three of my right- sided centre-halves are out, so I'll have to go to the youth system." Potential candidates to play include Tom Thorpe, 21, and Paddy McNair, 19. Neither under-21 captain Thorpe nor McNair, who joined United as a midfielder three years ago, have played for the first team. Smalling limped out of training on Wednesday and, with Luke Shaw expected to make his debut at left- back following his £28m summer arrival from Southampton, Rojo is likely to move to centre-half against the Hammers. "I won't take risks with players - they have to be fit," said Van Gaal, who is without nine players in total through injury. Phil Jones is set to be offered an improved contract at Manchester United, improved £75,000-a-week contract
Swansea City ruined Louis Van Gaal’s first game as Manchester United manager after claiming a shock 2-1 victory at Old Trafford. Summer signing Gylfi Sigurdsson scored Swansea’s winner with just under 20 minutes remaining, having also teed up Ki Sung-yueng’s first-half opener before Wayne Rooney acrobatically levelled for United early in the second half. United suffered a blow midway through the first half when debutant Jesse Lingard was forced off due to injury and was replaced by Adnan Januzaj. Swansea took the lead with the first real chance of the game on 28 minutes when Sigurdsson rolled a pass across the edge of the area and Ki, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, placed a low shot beyond David De Gea’s reach. Louis Van Gaal brought Nani on for Javier Hernandez at half-time, ditching his 3-5-2 formation in the process, and saw United equalise within eight minutes of the restart. Juan Mata’s corner was helped on at the near post by Phil Jones and newly-appointed captain Rooney’s ...

Van Gaal's first Premier League game with Manchester United tomorrow. His back 3 consists of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
There are third party complications in the Marcos Rojo move to Manchester United. Seems unlikely now. If we sign Benatia,we'll lose him in January because of Internationa Duty (African Cup of Nations). So i doubt we'll go for him. Right now, only Daley Blind looks like a reasonable option to partner Phil Jones and Smalling until we manage to get another centre back before the window closes. Man,if i was Woodward's neighbour,i would stone his house everyday. The *** is too slow.
Louis Van Gaal feels he will need far longer to turn Manchester United's fortunes around despite completing the pre-season with six wins out of six. United rounded off their schedule of pre-season fixtures with a 2-1 win over Valencia on Tuesday, giving the Dutchman, who took over after leading the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup last month, victory in his first match as Red Devils boss at Old Trafford. They now face Swansea in their Premier League opener at home on Saturday but Van Gaal is unsure whether Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia, who sat out Tuesday's match through injury, will be available. With those three sidelined, Van Gaal had Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Tyler Blackett at centre-back, with Ashley Young and Reece James playing as wing-backs and Michael Keane the only defender on the bench against Spanish side Valencia. Left-back Shaw and midfielder Ander Herrera have been the only new signings so far this pre- season, although United are widely reported to have made ...

The Reds skipper stepped up to convert from 12 yards after Phil Jones mistimed his 14th-minute challenge on Raheem Sterling at the Sun Life Stadium. England international Sterling was felled again in the box later in the half, but the American referee did not point to the spot for a second time, allowing United midfielder Ander Herrera a let off. It was Louis Van Gaal's side who created the first opening of the half, with Ashley Young , who scored twice last time out against Real Madrid, crossing for Javier Hernandez to narrowly guide wide. Young's delivery was a good source of United pressure throughout the opening 45 minutes, but Liverpool were the more threatening team overall as Jordan Henderson headed over before Gerrard's penalty. Philippe Coutinho would have doubled the Anfield outfit's advantage on 24 minutes had it not been for a fine save from David De G ...
A second-half fightback from Manchester United saw them beat fierce rivals Liverpool 3-1 to win the International Champions Cup in Miami's Sun Life Stadium. Steven Gerrard scored a first-half penalty for the Reds, before Wayne Rooney , Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard gave Louis Van Gaal his first piece of silverware as United manager. Glen Johnson fed Sterling inside the area on 14 minutes, and the England international was felled by Phil Jones to give the Reds skipper the chance to score from the penalty spot. Gerrard made no mistake as he confidently dispatched it to David De Gea's right-hand corner. The Anfield side had the better of the opening period and Philippe Coutinho forced De Gea into a low save with a fierce effort from outside the box after a good pass from Rickie Lambert. Following the restart, Liverpool's pressing game had United on the backfoot, and Lambert spurned a good chance when Gerrard played him in after robbing Ander Herrera of the ball around 30 yards from goal. The Reds almost had th ...

Manchester United beat Inter 5-3 on penalties after their International Champions Cup clash finished goalless. The Red Devils scored each of their penalties, with captain Darren Fletcher converting the decisive kick after Marco Andreolli rattled his effort off the crossbar. Manager Louis Van Gaal made four changes to the starting XI that played Roma on Saturday, with Anders Lindegaard, Chris Smalling, Fletcher and Ashley Young returning to the line-up. United came close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute with defender Phil Jones, he stooped low to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic got his hand to the ball and denied Jonny Evans on the rebound in a goal-mouth scramble. There were few clear-cut chances throughout the first half, though Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Danny Welbeck cut the Italians apart with a thrilling passing move, only for Mata’s low cross to be cut out before it reached Rooney. Wilfried Zaha was the only player in United ...
Manchester United's successful Tour 2014, presented by Aon, continued with a penalty shoot-out victory after Louis Van Gaal's men were held to a goalless draw by Inter Milan. Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher all converted from the spot to complete a full set of kicks for the Reds – playing in the new blue third kit for the first time – while Marco Andreolli's miss for Inter proved pivotal at the FedEx Field, home of NFL legends Washington Redskins. Van Gaal started with his three senior centre-backs all on the pitch, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones switching to the middle and right respectively, while Jonny Evans retained the left-sided role in which he began the tour against LA Galaxy. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia took up the wing-back positions, with Ander Herrera and again-captain Darren Fletcher allowing Juan Mata to support Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen following Luke Shaw to Manchester United with £11m offer Manchester UniTED are closing in on an £11million deal with Arsenal to sign Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen. United are understood to have had an initial bid of £6m rejected but are ready to go back with an increased offer after third parties revealed Vermaelen is keen to move to Old Trafford once his World Cup duties with his country are over. Vermaelen, who has only one year left on his contract, lost his starting place with the Gunners last season when Arsene Wenger preferred Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny at centre-back. Following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Van Gaal needs an experienced defender to help Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans. If the deal goes through, it will take United’s spending to £70m after the signings of midfielder Ander Herrera and left-back Luke Shaw.
Phil Jones to play for Manchester United this season .think Van Gaal might have other ideas
I can see Phil Jones playing centre half at Manchester United and being England's long term centre half
THE Three Lions ~ ENGLAND While there are no uncapped players in the squad, there are places for youngsters Luke Shaw, Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley, who have all impressed this season after starting the term with the Under-21s. At the other end of the scale, captain Steve Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney are all preparing for their third World Cup campaign, having featured in 2006 and 2010 previously. Hodgson selected Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Manchester United defender Phil Jones, who have both been absent through injury for their clubs but were cleared for Brazil. Meanwhile, on the standby list there are uncapped defenders John Stones of Everton and Jon Flanagan of Liverpool, less than a year after featuring for England in the U20s World Cup in Turkey last summer. The squad Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Fraser Forster (Celtic). Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (England), Glen Johnson (Liverpool ...
Phil Mcnulty BBC Sport chief football writer In his latest blog, BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil Mcnulty examines Roy Hodgson's frosty assessment of Ross Barkley's performance in the 2-2 draw with Ecuador and highlights five things we learned from the World Cup warm-up match. 1) England cannot afford to lose Gary Cahill or Phil Jagielka "Watching the uncertainty and lack of assurance displayed by Manchester United pair Chris Smalling and Phil Jones against Ecuador here in Miami demonstrated exactly why manager Roy Hodgson trusts Cahill and Jagielka. "They are superior to the competition - and the competition did not look too hot against Ecuador."

Manchester United defender Phil Jones will reportedly return to full England training on Tuesday after recovering from a shoulder injury. Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson insisted last week that the 22-year-old was progressing, despite only being able to take part in non-contact training. According to The Express, Jones will return to full training this week after recovering from damaged shoulder ligaments, which he picked up during United's 3-1 victory over Hull City on May 6. Reports have claimed that Jones is expected to sit out of England's World Cup warm-up match against Peru at Wembley on Friday, but could feature over the next three games. England will get their World Cup campaign underway in Brazil against Italy in Manaus on June 14.
BREAKING NEWS! Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could be a doubt for the World Cup, according to media reports in his homeland. The 27-year-old Liverpool striker will have keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to his meniscus, says broadcaster Tenfield. Estimates on his recovery range from 15 days to a minimum of four weeks. Uruguay play England on 19 June in Sao Paulo after their Group D opener against Costa Rica on 14 June. The length of Suarez's lay-off is likely to depend on the extent of the damage discovered during Thursday's procedure. Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones took ten weeks to return to action after surgery on his meniscus - a wedge of cartilage that absorbs shock in the knee - in September 2012.

what do we expect with this squad? Roy Hodgson announced his 23 man England squad and his short list last week. The England manage has been sensible in getting his squad out early in what appears to be a decent squad. There are some weaknesses though, so what can we make of Hodgons’s squad? Defence One of the major weaknesses appears to be in defence. Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill are the two first choice centre-backs. Cahill was in the Premier League team of the year and has by all accounts improved a lot since joining Chelsea, that being said he is still not at the same level of Rio Ferdinand or John Terry in their prime. The back up for England’s first choice pairing is also somewhat weak in Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. Long gone are the days when England had four top class centre-backs to chose from (Ledley King, Jamie Carragher, Ferdinand and Terry). England are no longer spoiled for choice. Jones and Smalling weren’t exactly brilliant for Manchester United this season and neither have really ...

Chelsea will make a surprise move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones this summer. [caughtoffside]
Chelsea have targeted Manchester United defender Phil Jones, 22, as a summer buy.
Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a shock move for Manchester United defender, Phil Jones in the summer. It is understood that boss, Jose Mourinho is chasing the defender and admirers how the player is able to adapt to various playing positions. With David Luiz likely to be heading away from Stamford Bridge this summer, Mourinho sees Jones a perfect replacement and back-up for John Terry and Gary Cahill. Jones has had a disappointing season under David Moyes, but has been selected for England's World Cup squad. The player is suited to a centre-back role, but when needed, can play either at right-back or defensive midfield, which is why Mourinho is watching the player closely.
Vidic is joining Inter Milan while his long-standing partner Rio Ferdinand has also announced his exit this week, leaving the England duo and Northern Ireland international as the three remaining senior centre-backs at the club. The Serbian has great faith in the ability of Jones and Smalling, both of whom are included in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad, and also Evans, who will aim to be fit for United's summer tour. "I think it’s up to the new manager to decide but what I have to say is I have been training and playing with these guys and they definitely have all the ability they need to become top players," Vidic stressed to ManUtd.com. "I think Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, first of all, are people who are attracting a lot of interest here because they are national-team players and the future of English football, not just Manchester United. "They definitely have the physical strength, pace and technique to play for this club and I think now is the time for them to step up next year and to maybe form ...
16 players from Manchester United are set to play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil despite a disappointing domestic season. 19 year old midfield sensation Adnan Januzaj is setto make his international debut and he joins Marouane Fellaini (48 caps) in Belgium’s 23 man squad. Januzaj chose to represent Belgium over Albania, Turkey and Serbia. England has many Manchester United players in the squad with Wayne Rooney (89 caps) playing in his 3rd World Cup. Should the move go through, Shaw would become one of the most expensive teenagers in history, the current best-paid youngster on the planet and the second most expensive full-back behind Barcelona's Dani Alves. Manchester City and Chelsea have both expressed an interest in Shaw but both clubs will have to rein in their spending in light of Uefa's Financial Fair Play regualations. Manchester United have a recent tradition of spending big on young talent, having splashed out on Wayne Rooney - the most expensive teenager ever - Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, David De Gea, Wilfried Zaha, Anderson and Cristiano Ronaldo since 2003. In October they handed Adnan Januzaj a bumper five-year contract, including a huge signing-on fee, with his agent recently bragging that the young Belgian earns more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi did at the same age . The club are set to name Louis Van Gaal as David Moyes' permanent successor this week, with Ryan Giggs vacating his caretaker role after four matches at the helm ...

Nemanja Vidic believes the future of Manchester United's central defence is secure with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans ready to fill the void.
Manchester United want to bring in Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels to replace the outgoing Rio Ferdinand .Hummels went on the record saying he would rather win one championship as a key player than four championships as a part- time player , something which would have ruled him out of a move to United but now that Ferdinand and Vidic are both set to leave United this summer, there is certainly a place for Hummels in the side. Chris Smalling , Phil Jones and Jonny Evans don’t give United enough quality at the back and we’ll need to bring in a world class centre back if possible. Borussia Dortmund did not enjoy the best of campaigns this season and neither did Hummels but quality stands the test of time and he is still a great centre back with the potential to get better. A ball playing defender like Ferdinand was in his pomp, Hummels is not afraid to bring the ball out of defence and play it out from the back, something which would help United no end. If Ferdinand or Vidic had stayed on, United woul ...

There were 12 teams playing in the Premier League today and most of them still had a lot to play for going into their respective matches. Just before half time, Steven Whittaker brought down Danny Welbeck as he prepared to latch onto a loose ball Norwich failed to clear, and Wayne Rooney scored with a confident penalty. With Nemanja Vidic Heading for Inter Milan and time also ticking down on Rio Ferdinand’s career, Moyes will have to think seriously about defensive recruits when he makes his squad reinforcements this summer. But Jones wants the opportunity to forge a partnership with Chris Smalling. Jones said: “I’ve played with Chris for three or four years in the England Under-21s and also United, and we have a really good understanding. “We compliment each other well and when you look at other central-defender partnerships and how they grow and build, they get better by playing together. “You make mistakes along the way everyone does but the more you play together and understand each other the better the partnership gets. “Hopefully that can happen and hopefully we have shown the manager that we are ready for the challenge. “It’s a cliché, but, in a squad like Manchester United, it’s healthy to ...

Holders Bayern Munich romped into the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-1 victory at home to Manchester United in Wednesday's quarter-final, second-leg to win 4-2 on aggregate. Having drawn 1-1 at Old Trafford in last week's first-leg, Bayern had to come from behind after United's left-back Patrice Evra put the guests ahead with a superb second-half strike at Munich's Allianz Arena. But Bayern equalised almost immediately through a diving Mario Mandzukic header, the first of their three goals in the final half an hour. Thomas Mueller then tapped Bayern into the lead before Arjen Robben slotted the hosts third to knock David Moyes' United out of the competition. The first-half was a tense, tactical affair with Bayern failing to exploit their customary 70 percent possession as United packing their defence, forced the Germans to attack through the middle with little success. Manchester's wing-backs Phil Jones and Evra worked tirelessly to contain Bayern's wingers Robben and Franck Ribery, limiting the Ba ...

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United: Team News and Injury Updates Manchester United travel to Germany on Wednesday night with the knowledge they need to score at least once to advance to the next stage of the Champions League. United showed they were no pushovers in the 1-1 draw between themselves and Bayern Munich last week, but they will need an even bigger performance to topple the European Champions on their own patch. They will, however, be boosted by the news that Wayne Rooney trained on Tuesday after bruising his toe, with the forward expected to start the game. Marouane Fellaini and Rafael missed the session and both remain doubts for the match, with Robin Van Persie definitely out after picking up an injury against Olympiakos in the last round. In Fellaini's absence, manager David Moyes could opt for Phil Jones in midfield to offer the necessary energy to close Bayern's creative players down, though Darren Fletcher could be in contention to partner Michael Carrick instead. Manchester United plan new deals for next generation stars David De Gea, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley
Rio Ferdinand was drafted into Manchester United's defence for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against holders Bayern Munich on Tuesday due to an injury to right-back Rafael. Rafael was ruled out with a thigh injury, meaning that Phil Jones shuffled along from centre-back to fill in at right-back and Ferdinand returned to the side in central defence alongside Nemanja Vidic. With Patrice Evra suspended, Alexander Buttner was named at left-back, while manager David Moyes elected to name a central midfield trio of Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Ryan Giggs. In all there were five changes to the team that beat Aston Villa 4-1 on Saturday, with Ferdinand, Carrick, Giggs, Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck the players coming in. Manchester United have been handed a potential boost ahead of the Bayern Munich match with Jonny Evans returning to training. Evans has been out injured for two months, injured against Stoke City on February 1 in the 2-1 loss at the Britannia. The centre-back has been nursing his calf injury ever since, but was pictured today back in full training with the first team squad ahead of the Bayern clash. Chris Smalling was back in training too, meaning David Moyes has a full complement of centre-backs to choose from, including Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Phil Jones. Evans may therefore not expect to go straight back into the first team, but a spot could open up for him due to Rafael Da Silva missing training. The Brazilian is hoping to be back to take on Bayern, but should he miss out, either Jones or Smalling could shift to right-back, while Jones remains an option should Moyes decide to pack the midfield. Should the match with Bayern be too soon, Evans is likely to play an important role in the Premier ...

Reds marvel at evergreen Giggs Ryan Giggs received a glowing tribute from his Manchester United team-mates after producing an instrumental 90-minute display in the 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday night. Almost a month after his last Reds outing and on his 150th Champions League appearance, Giggs had a hand in the first two goals at Old Trafford and was as fit as any other player on the pitch. It led to manager David Moyes labelling him a "freak" after the game, while his team-mates were left shaking their heads in continued admiration. "What's left to say about him?" said Michael Carrick. "It's incredible to come into a game like that, having not played a lot of football recently, and get through it physically – it shows how he looks after himself. His ball for Wayne [Rooney] for the second goal was typical of him. He can still do it and it's a pleasure to play with him." Phil Jones added: "He's terrific. He drives the team forward and the ball for the penalty was exquisite. You can't teach that. H ...
Manchester United v Olympiakos: how the players rated Guys have a look David De Gea: United's Best Player this season and he showed it again last night with a superb double save from close-range in the first-half and another assured performance. The goalkeeper can be absolved of blame for the travails of this campaign. 8/10 Rafael Da Silva: Rash, a headless chicken at times he again showed an unwise willingness to charge forward. No-one can doubt his energy and commitment but he needs to mature as a defender. And to do so as quickly as he wants to bomb forward. 5/10 Phil Jones: It is time for Jones to nail down a position. And that has to be centre-half. But he has so much to learn as was shown when he was left for dead by Joel Campbell in the United penalty area. Positionally suspect; improved however. 5/10 Rio Ferdinand: Body language was curious but then it has been a curious campaign for Ferdinand making only his fifth start in 24 matches. His (now) lack of pace was exposed and he threw his hands up i ...
On the 8th of December 2013 I got to fulfill a long life dream of watching my beloved Manchester United play in a Champions League game at Old Trafford. Considering Utd could be facing getting knocked out of the competition tonight against Olympiokos i thought i would share this very special moment with you all as it could be the last time we could be seeing Utd in the competition for years to come. Utd played Shakhtar Donetsk with Utd winning 1-0 Phil Jones with the winning goal putting Utd through the knock out stage without a loss in the group stage. Just hearing the Champions League anthem at the Stretford End gave me goose bumps i had to keep pinching myself it was amazing to be there and a moment in my life i will never forget. Thanks to my Dad, Peter Gosling and Grace Gosling for being there with me it was truly an unfogettable game of football.

Media watch As the Liverpool players cavorted in one corner, from the Stretford End came a roar of defiance. They were singing about the number of times Manchester United had been champions. Twenty. The last came less than a year ago but it already sounds like ancient history. The forlorn rebelliousness that used to be the preserve of Liverpool fans. Now they look forward on Merseyside. 'Make us dream,' read one banner. All the talk was of winning the league; and not in some distant era when it was called Division One, either. Liverpool have a chance in the here and now. They are four points behind leaders Chelsea, with a game in hand, to be played at home against Sunderland on March 26. Manchester City and Chelsea also have to visit Anfield in April. And this is a team in form. Justice was done at Old Trafford. The scoreline did not flatter Liverpool in the least, adding to the feeling of sea change. Liverpool have been coming to Manchester for 118 years and have won away to United on just 16 occasions. ...
GERRARD NETS TWO PENALTIES AS SUAREZ ALSO STRIKES TO PILE PRESSURE ON MOYES Two Steven Gerrard penalties and a Luis Suarez strike downed rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford as Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool did everything to strengthen their title credentials. Liverpool took the lead after 34 minutes, with Rafael handling in the area before Steven Gerrard stepped up with a perfect spot-kick, sending David De Gea the wrong way. The Brazilian defender was lucky to stay on the pitch having already been booked, but Mark Clattenburg kept his cards in his pocket. Wayne Rooney tested Simon Mignolet just before half-time, but his fizzing effort was parried away. Phil Jones then upended Joe Allen in the area just after the break, with Gerrard stepping up to slot home with inch-perfect precision again.
No defiance and no plan. After defeat to Liverpool, what next for David Moyes at Manchester United? Manchester United's 3-0 defeat at home to Liverpool represented a new low in a season full of them for David Moyes and his side. Adam Bate picks through the wreckage of the latest hammer blow and sees little cause for optimism while the Scot is at the helm. By Adam Bate at Old Trafford | “Twenty times, twenty times Man United.” The Stretford End barely missed a beat even as Luis Suarez’s shot hit the net to put Liverpool three goals up and complete the humiliation. There was an admirable spirit of defiance among much of the Old Trafford crowd. Tragically for them, it was not matched by the players in red on the pitch. What next for David Moyes? He had attempted to paint a picture of optimism in his programme notes. “From what I see every day, positivity is growing,” said Moyes of the mood at Carrington. “What goes on there is completely different to what people perceive the situation to be at Ma ...
Wayne Rooney described Manchester United's defeat to Liverpool as a nightmare and one of the lowest points in his career after losing 3-0 to their rivals at Old Trafford. Rooney's side are now 14 points behind Liverpool, and are all but out of the race for the top four. Rooney and strike partner Robin Van Persie struggled to get into the game, whichs saw Steven Gerrard score two penalties, miss another, and Luis Suarez round off a perfect win for Liverpool Rooney told MUTV: 'It’s a nightmare. It’s one of the worst days I’ve ever had in football.' United boss David Moyes lamented the concession of the second penalty, just moments after the second half began, as the key moment in his team's demise. Phil Jones barged into Joe Allen and prompted referee Mark Clattenburg to point to the spot. 'It was a game littered with penalty kicks and decisions - some were right and some were wrong. It was a tough day for us,' he said. 'At half-time we were 1-0 down to a penalty kick, I didn't think there was much in ...

With Nemanja Vidic having sealed a switch to Inter Milan this summer and Rio Ferdinand's current contract also expiring in June, it's clear that Manchester United have big changes to make at the back. The likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling were signed to step up when the time came for their senior team-mates to move on but David Moyes certainly needs to bolster his backline.

Surely David Moyes cannot remain in charge next season? It is abundantly clear that he has now lost the dressing room - that can be the only explanation for the disgraceful performance today. Notwithstanding that, there are clearly players who need to move on.quickly! Rafael and Phil Jones for sure. An entire new back four required and we still need a holding midfielder.Mata looked a shadow of the player he was at Chelsea. Against that backdrop, it was nice of Manchester United to write to me and tell me they were delighted to be able to announce that season ticket prices would be frozen next season!!

Graham Poll on second Liverpool Penalty against Manchester United: 'Another penalty for Liverpool and a foul made by Phil Jones which does not require a yellow card – correctly. 'So in his 20th PL game involving Manchester United Marl Clattenburg has awarded his first and second penalties against them. 'Interesting situation there as Glenn Johnson is shepherding the ball across goal it hits his hand – I don’t think that Clattenburg saw it and it was accidental anyway so was not a penalty.' Well well, we have had a nice weekend. Manchester United back with a bang and Manchester City yet again loses to Wigan Athletic. Next week we face Liverpool who does not have any match this week. So they are probably more rested and likely to be strong. But that ain't a problem. We as a whole team have improved and found a new pair in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Also, with Fellaini our mid field has improved. Juan Mata , Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie lead the attack. However, David Moyes in the recent Press Conference stated that Shinji Kagawa will be given more playing time. This is a good news to all of us. The lad gave a cameo against West Brom. Meanwhile, Michael Keane, the promising centre back is loaned for rest of the season to Blackburn Rovers.

The potential departures of experienced players such Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra added to Nemanja Vidic and the lack of quality in central midfield mean there are some key alterations that need to be implemented. United have a core of quality that requires a few adjustments. Goalkeeper: There are no issues regarding David De Gea at number 1 for Manchester United. Anders Lindergaard provides suitable quality to back up the spaniard. There is no need for change in the goalkeeping department. Defence: United are strong in defence with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling able to challenge for a spot in their favoured centre-back position with the exit of Vidic and perhaps Ferdinand. They will be joined by Jonny Evans and the return of Michael Keane will add depth the central defensive department. At right-back Rafael Da Silva has made the position his own and United could perhaps add an understudy for the Brazilian, but the position does not require urgent attention. Depending on Patrice Evra's decision come the en ...

However, United secured the win when Wayne Rooney headed in from close range and Danny Welbeck provided a cool finish after a well-worked move.

Manchester United have released the list of nominees for the next captaincy role, now that it's confirmed current skipper Nemanja Vidic is to quit the club at the end of the season. It's a common that more senior players like Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs are to follow Vidic out of the club come season end. It might seem strange to others that Robin Van Persie is not on that list of nominees. The nominees are Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans and David De Gea.. In your own view, who deserves the famous Red Devil arm-band at Old Trafford once Vidic le

Moyes sees no immediate need to enter the market for a new centre-half. He said:"We've got three at the club who are all young yet all quite experienced, after the World Cup I think England will probably be looking at Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as their next centre-halves, and we have them here at Manchester United and Jonny Evans as well. The big thing we will miss with Vida going is his leadership, his warrior qualities. I do think that Evans, Jones and Smalling have been pushing through for their place though, and that's the way you want it.

In other news, links between 19 year old Adnan Januzaj and a move to PSG are floating around, with a £40 million offer and a £100,000 per week contract offer to be made in the English Summer. Do you think he should leave United, or become a Manchester United legend?
It was a day to forget for Manchester United at the Britannia Stadium as the reigning Premier League Champions fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of a Stoke City side trapped in a relegation dogfight. It was the first time United boss David Moyes was able to start Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Juan Mata together since signing the Spaniard from Chelsea, and despite the new and very exciting attacking prowess United have at their disposal, it was defensive frailties which yet again cost them three points. First half injuries to both centre halves Phil Jones and Jonny Evans saw Michael Carrick fill in alongside Chris Smalling. Despite Carrick being a midfielder who plays in a deep role – one thing he certainly isn’t is a central defender – and Stoke capitalised on this. Although there was a huge element of luck with the opening goal after Charlie Adam’s shot from distance took a wicked deflection off Carrick to wrong foot David De Gea; there was nothing wrong with Stoke’s second which was a bli ...
