Louis Van Gaal maintained his unbeaten record as Manchester United boss following a penalty shootout win over Inter Milan in Washington DC. All five United penalty takers found the net in a 5-3 showdown that followed a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. United only registered one shot on target in the first half, but they upped their game after the break. Substitute Wilfried Zaha, making his first appearance of the tour, was particularly impressive playing as a striker, as was Luke Shaw. Zaha, and Tom Cleverley were unlucky not to be awarded penalties in normal time at the FedEx Field. David De Gea only had one save to make during the match and he watched Marco Andreoli hit the bar from 12 yards, which allowed Darren Fletcher to fire home the winner. Fletcher, Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa all scored fine penalties. It was a far better performance from 12 yards than the dismal 2-1 shootout defeat to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final under David Moyes last year. After beati ...

Chelsea have a number of players competing for places in the centre of the pitch, including former Gunners hero Cesc Fabregas, but one man who looks set to leave is Nigeria international Mikel. The 27-year-old started in just 11 league games last season, and reports in Italy claim he has been offered to a number of Serie A teams including Inter Milan for around £10million. Best Footballers Who Never Played At The World Cup - Some players achieve greatness for their clubs but never have the opportunity to represent their country at the highest level. This usually happens because their country failed to qualify or, as in the case of one German in this list, because of his disputes with his national football association. How would a World Cup have been remembered if Di Stefano, Weah, Best or Schuster had played? We will never know. 1. GEORGE BEST The incomparable Best played only 37 times for Northern Ireland and scored an unimpressive 10 international goals, but won two league titles and the European Cup with his beloved Manchester United while lighting up British football like no other before or since. Voted European player of the year in 1968 after helping United lift the European Cup, Best was the complete footballer. The man the Spanish media lauded 'El Beatle' after running Real Madrid ragged at the Bernabeu Stadium in the semi-finals of the European Cup, had supreme bal ...

Okazaki Shooting star: Okazaki averages more than a goal every other game for Japan Tom Collomosse A A A Monday 09 June 2014 EXPECTATIONS Japan believe they can at least match their result in the 2010 World Cup, when they were eliminated in the second round. Their attacking style and neat football around the penalty area makes them a danger but their defence is far from sound. This is an open group, though, with no clearly superior side, and Japan know the conditions after competing at last year’s Confederations Cup. COACH Alberto Zaccheroni won Serie A with AC Milan in 1999 and has coached 12 other clubs in his homeland, including Inter Milan, Lazio and Juventus. ‘Zac’ made his name at Udinese in the 1990s, where his positive football ensured his club were neutrals’ favourites. The Italian is similarly popular in Japan, having guided the side to the Asian Cup and the East Asian Cup in 2011 and 2013 respectively. STARS Playmakers Shinji Kagawa, of Manchester United, and AC Milan’s Keisuke Honda ...
Kurt Zouma: I turned down Man United Kurt Zouma has revealed he rejected an offer from Manchester United to join Chelsea and work with Jose Mourinho. The French defender sealed a 12 million-pound move to Stamford Bridge in January, although he was loaned back to his previous club, St Etienne, for the remainder of the season. But the 19-year-old claims he turned down the Red Devils -- along with Monaco and Inter Milan -- to sign for the Blues. United are likely to look for a new central defender this summer with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving Old Trafford, and Zouma suggested he was wanted by David Moyes, but said Mourinho's influence was crucial in his eventual decision. "I really wanted to go to Chelsea," the 19-year-old told France Football. "Did I have other offers? Yes, there were Internazionale, Monaco and Manchester United. All those clubs called. "Monaco was the first to call, with the sport director. I thought about it, but with Mr Mourinho, that is a strong signal. "I know it is a r ...
Chelsea or Juventus? Paul Pogba's future set to be decided after contract offer CHELSEA have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Juventus star Paul Pogba after the Italian outfit insisted they expect the Frenchman to commit to a new deal in the next few weeks. Chelsea are looking light in the middle of the park after losing Frank Lampard on a free transfer, while versatile defender David Luiz is on the brink of joining French champions Paris St-Germain for a whopping £50million. Jose Mourinho is keen to bring a world-class midfielder to Stamford Bridge this summer, and Express Sport revealed last weekend that the Special One wants one of Paul Pogba, Atletico Madrid's Koke or Tottenham's Paulinho to partner Serbian powerhouse Nemanja Matic next season. The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss had earmarked Pogba as his preferred choice, with some reports claiming a bid worth up to a staggering £68million was being prepared for the ex-Manchester United starlet. However Serie A toppers Juventus are a ...
MEXICO striker Javier Hernandez has been told to leave Manchester United if he wants to keep getting selected for his country - with Tottenham, Inter Milan and Aston Villa all monitoring the situation.
Ashley Cole could be on his way to Real Madrid this summer, after the Spanish giants offered the departing Chelsea man a two-year deal reportedly worth a huge £10million. The left-back has admitted his Chelsea career looks as though it’s over, with Chelsea seeming to place more importance on securing new deals for Frank Lampard and John Terry. And according to the Metro, Real Madrid have already offered him a lucrative deal to take him to Spain, whilst Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be keen. Inter Milan and Monaco have also both put their hats into the ring for the defender. Cole retired from international football last week after being snubbed by Roy Hodgson, who chose youngster Luke Shaw in his place. But the level of interest shows he is still regarded as a world-class defender by clubs across Europe, and is set for another couple of seasons at the top of the game.
Vidic is joining Inter Milan while his long-standing partner Rio Ferdinand has also announced his exit this week, leaving the England duo and Northern Ireland international as the three remaining senior centre-backs at the club. The Serbian has great faith in the ability of Jones and Smalling, both of whom are included in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad, and also Evans, who will aim to be fit for United's summer tour. "I think it’s up to the new manager to decide but what I have to say is I have been training and playing with these guys and they definitely have all the ability they need to become top players," Vidic stressed to ManUtd.com. "I think Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, first of all, are people who are attracting a lot of interest here because they are national-team players and the future of English football, not just Manchester United. "They definitely have the physical strength, pace and technique to play for this club and I think now is the time for them to step up next year and to maybe form ...

Manchester United eye transfer of Bruno Martins Indi to partner Mats Hummels as new centre-back duo Louis Van Gaal could bring defender Bruno Martins Indi with him from Holland to Manchester United. And United are also eyeing up Germany's Mats Hummels as they look to plug the gap in their back-line left by the summer exits of long-term centre-back duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Martins Indi plays under Van Gaal, who will be confirmed as the Reds' new boss this week, for the Dutch national side and he rates the Feyenoord stopper very highly. Martins Indi, 22, has been a key figure in Holland's qualification for the World Cup Finals and has already won 22 caps. Hummels, 25, starred for Borussia Dortmund as they won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and in their march to last year's Champions League Final. Meanwhile, Vidic believes the existing trio of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are good enough to replace him and Ferdinand. Vidic, who is joining Inter Milan on a free transfer, said: "I thi ...

Jones hurt against Hull Phil Jones suffered an injury blow in the first half of Manchester United's final Barclays Premier League home game with Hull City. The defender, who started at centre-back alongside Chris Smalling, hurt his shoulder when colliding with Maynor Figueroa as he attempted to reach an Adnan Januzaj corner. With the World Cup Finals on the horizon, England coach Roy Hodgson will be anxiously awaiting an update on the problem, which led to Jones heading straight for the tunnel. "He's gone to hospital and we will just have to *** it," explained Giggs. "But it does not look great. "I'm just saying that the reaction, he asked to come off straight away, whether it's precaution or not, from a player's point of view, you know if it's bad. Hopefully it's not too bad." The injury presented substitute Nemanja Vidic with a chance to step into the breach, to a rousing ovation, as he said his farewells to Old Trafford ahead of a summer move to Inter Milan.

Phil Jones has told David Moyes not to waste Manchester United’s millions on any new central defenders. With Nemanja Vidic Heading for Inter Milan and time also ticking down on Rio Ferdinand’s career, Moyes will have to think seriously about defensive recruits when he makes his squad reinforcements this summer. But Jones wants the opportunity to forge a partnership with Chris Smalling. Jones said: “I’ve played with Chris for three or four years in the England Under-21s and also United, and we have a really good understanding. “We compliment each other well and when you look at other central-defender partnerships and how they grow and build, they get better by playing together. “You make mistakes along the way everyone does but the more you play together and understand each other the better the partnership gets. “Hopefully that can happen and hopefully we have shown the manager that we are ready for the challenge. “It’s a cliché, but, in a squad like Manchester United, it’s healthy to ...

AZPILICUETA: PAST LAST EIGHT There is a range of Champions League experience throughout the Chelsea squad aiming to overcome Paris Saint-Germain tonight. There are those who have made it to the pinnacle and lifted the famous 'cup with the big ears', and there are those, as Jose Mourinho has emphasised, who are new this season to the knockout stages of this tournament. There is also Cesar Azpilicueta who is not fresh to the Champions League quarter-finals but is determined to make it on to the next step for the first time. In the Spaniard's two seasons in France at PSG's big rivals Marseille, the club progressed to the second stage although having played in the group games in the first campaign, a knee injury meant Azpilicueta was absent when they were knocked out by Manchester United in the Round of 16. In 2011/12 however he was there for an impressive run through a tough group and then beyond Inter Milan in the last 16 before meeting Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. 'We did well in the two years I wa ...
