Following the international retirements of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, the former midfielder feels the Manchester United striker is best suited to fill their void. Paul Scholes feels Wayne Rooney would be best utilised in midfield for England’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland. England limped to a drab 1-0 friendly victory over Norway on Wednesday as an unimpressive run continues from the group-stage World Cup exit, while Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard left the international scene. Scholes believes Gerrard’s decision to retire has left England lacking and feels moving Rooney deeper, behind Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could prove a useful solution. Writing for his column in The Independent, Scholes said: “It is quite obvious to me that we do not have a midfielder with the range of passing to exploit these three attacking players [Welbeck, Sturridge and Sterling]. It is a radical solution, and one I would propose just for the Switzerland qualifier, but I would play ...

West Ham inflicted a third defeat of the season on Liverpool, Southampton moved up to second with victory at Swansea, Arsenal beat a virus-affected Aston Villa 3-0 and Crystal Palace won their first game of the season at Everton. Samir said 'Chelsea have made some good signings and Cesc Fabregas will be the guy to replace Frank Lampard. He is a great player,I know that because I was with him at Arsenal.' 'Chelsea had a weakness up front last year but have signed Diego Costa. They will be really dangerous. 'United have a new coach, have strengthened as well and don't have any European competition -- so I expect them to come back stronger, too.' 'But Arsenal could be in there, too, and bringing in players like Alexis Sanchez will make them stronger.' 'Liverpool will find it tougher because they have lost Luis Suarez and they will be playing Champions League football so it will be different for them.' .!
Rooney is the perfect captain - Wilshere 5 September 2014 19:24 England midfielder Jack Wilshere is certain that Wayne Rooney is the ideal choice to captain the national team. Rooney was handed the task after Steven Gerrard retired from international football following the team's dismal World Cup campaign, in which England exited at the group stage without a win. Frank Lampard, Gerrard's deputy, also called time on his England career and manager Roy Hodgson subsequently named Rooney to wear the armband. Despite also being given the Manchester United captaincy role by Louis Van Gaal during the close-season, critics have questioned the appointment of Rooney - who scored a penalty in England's 1-0 win over Norway on Wednesday - but Wilshere is under no illusion that the Former Everton prodigy is a perfect fit. "He is great," the Arsenal man said. "Even before he was made captain I looked up to him. "He is a leader, a personality and is not scared to tell you when you are doing something wrong. "I look forwar ...

While some players are setting the competition alight with incredible goals and wonderful performances, others are leaving the competition with their tails between their legs. Below are some of the stars who have so far failed to live up to their billing: Steven Gerrard: The Liverpool captain took up where he left off against Chelsea few days to the end of the past English Premiership season; a calamity that all but ended the Merseysiders’ quest for a first league title in the Premier League era. Jeremy Clarkson om fotball: Over the years I have argued that football is a stupid game in which 22 overpaid nancy boys with idiotic hair run around a field attempting to kick an inflated sheep’s pancreas into some netting while an audience of several thousand van drivers beat one another over the head with bottles and chairs. Nor could I understand how someone from Tooting could possibly support, say, Manchester United, a team sponsored by those hateful *** at AIG and made up of players from Portugal, France, Holland and, in the case of Wayne Rooney, Walt Disney. Where’s the connection? What’s the point? I have also suggested that it’s preposterous to have football stadiums in the middle of cities. Why should anyone be delayed by match traffic just so a handful of thugs can watch a Brazilian man falling over? And as for those people who can’t cope if their team loses. Give me strength. If you get all teary-eyed just because someone from Latvia, playing in a town you’ve never been to, for ...
Last week, Chelsea completed a youth double in the form of the FA Youth Cup and the U21 Premier League title. It was a proud moment for the Blues youth system, who have now reached the final of the former tournament five times in the last eight years. But in truth, the Chelsea development squad’s 2-1 victory against Manchester United in the U21 Play-Off final at Old Trafford was a rather hollow victory. For all the millions spent, time consumed and players prioritised in making the West Londoners one of England’s most formidable youth outfits, just three Chelsea academy products have become first team regulars at Stamford Bridge since the turn of the millennium – John Terry, Ryan Bertrand and Nemanja Matic. And although the Chelsea captain’s rise to the starting XI in the early 2000s was a simple enough path, Bertrand and Matic have not been so lucky. Struggling to adequately prove himself as the rightful successor to Ashley Cole, Bertrand has been sent out on loan to Aston Villa this season and . ...

y Hodgson has named England's 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. While there is an experienced core to the squad — Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Glen Johnson have over 300 caps between them — the overriding theme is one of of youthful vigour and promise. Or inexperience, if you're feeling ungenerous. As expected, this season's Premier League success stories are well represented. Five of the stars of Liverpool's oh-so-close title campaign are selected, including forward Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Jordan Henderson, while Southampton and Everton have contributed three players each, the hugely exciting Ross Barkley among them. However, indifferent seasons with Manchester United mean that Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick only make the reserve list, as does West Ham's Andy Carroll. Tottenham players Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend, the star of qualifying, have missed out through injury — this is, incidentally, the first time England will go to a major tournament without ...

RUN-INS REMEMBERED 'You don't want to look too far ahead. Concentrate on yourselves every week; never take a game lightly whether the team's at the top or the bottom of the league - they're all as potentially difficult at this stage. Three Reasons Why Chelsea Can Win The UEFA Champions League Chelsea’s domineering display against Galatasaray on Tuesday night proved Jose Mourinho’s men are the real deal in the UEFA Champions League. Relentless pressure in midfield, clever counter-attacks and clinical finishing all played out in front of a yet another stingy defensive display. (MORE: Chelsea cruise past Galatasaray, as Blues make Champions League quarters with 2-0 win) The West London club are likely to be the Premier League’s only representatives in the last eight of the UCL, (barring a valiant fightback from Manchester United against Olympiakos on Wednesday) so they’ll be flying the St. George’s flag in Europe for the rest of the season. Drogba has just turned 36 yet still looks as though he could play on for a while yet. 2) Ryan Giggs, Manchester United Ryan Giggs remains a part of the Manchester United first-team scene despite having turned 40. His participation in the coaching side of things naturally means that his long reign at the club as a player might finally be coming to an end, but he's still made almost 20 appearances this term. Giggs is United's record appearance holder and has won everything in the game at club level. 3) Andrea Pirlo, Juventus A minor technicality to get out of the way—Pirlo is still 34 but will turn 35 before the end of the current season. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City earned wins over Everton, Sunderland and Stoke respectively, while Manchester United beat Crystal Palace. Chelsea looked set to drop points for the second successive league match before returning Captain John Terry popped up right at the death to turn home Frank Lampard's cross and inflict a 1-0 defeat upon unlucky Everton. That late drama in the day's early kick-off put Jose Mourinho's men four points clear at the summit ahead of the 3pm fixtures, but Arsenal and City both responded with home wins of their own. They did so in wildly contrasting fashion though, unlike in midweek when they suffered almost identical 2-0 home defeats in their Champions League last-16 first legs. Arsenal, fresh from being beaten by reigning European Champions Bayern Munich, cruised to a 4-1 victory over Sunderland that took them back to within a point of Chelsea. This is the most insightful, articulate and accurate ever about this players,I have always said it,those clubs destroyed Anderson and Mikel. Read and make your judgements* In Chelsea’s match with Manchester United this Sunday Afternoon, arguably the most fascinating battleground will be the central midfield zone. That is entirely common in matches between two big clubs, but usually because of the vast quality on display. This weekend’s match is different, as both teams are weakest in that very position: the central midfield, the heart of the side. There are injury problems: Chelsea may be without Frank Lampard while David Moyes will probably still be unable to call upon Marouane Fellaini. Beyond that pair, Chelsea have depended upon just four central midfielders and have recently been using centre-back David Luiz in the holding role, despite Jose Mourinho previously insisting he would not, and have now re-signed Nemanja Matic -- a player they sold as part of the Luiz deal in 2011 -- for 21 million poun ...

Lampard in line to captain England. Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer Frank Lampard will be awarded a commemorative 100th cap before the Chile game and may captain England the South Americans this Friday at Wembley. The midfielders’s two daughters, Luna and Isla, are understood to be mascots for the clash against the South Americans. The Three Lions’ preparations for the matches received a slight disruption when they were forced to change their hotel because of a virus at St George’s Park. The squad met up in Watford on Tuesday, rather than their normal base in Staffordshire, and will train at Arsenal’s base in London Colney today and Wednesday, although the FA insists this was a precautionary measure. No England players are understood to have been affected by the virus. Manchester United duo Danny Welbeck (knee) and Michael Carrick (Achilles) have been withdrawn from the squad due to injury, but not replacements will be called up. FRANK LAMPARD: SEEKING A BIG WIN Ahead of today's game against Manchester City, Frank Lampard has underlined the importance of securing a first victory of the season against one of the teams expected to be challenging for the Premier League title. The Blues go into the game unbeaten in seven, and full of confidence following our 3-0 Champions League win against Schalke in midweek, our fourth consecutive victory. Having already drawn with both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur this season, though, securing three points against Manuel Pellegrini's side would send out a real statement of intent, as Lampard explained. 'It would be nice, you want to get good results in the big ones, you want to get good results week in, week out and I think we've done that,' he said. 'We've kept ourselves up there even though I don't think we've been flowing, we've got good results. 'I can see us improving and if we work hard we will do, starting with Man City, it's a big game for both clubs.' The Blues midfielder, who, ...
Alex Ferguson has described Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard as "not a top, top player" - despite admitting he was interested in buying Gerrard in 2005. The Former Manchester United manager made the comments in his autobiography, adding that it was "absolute nonsense" to suggest either Gerrard or Chelsea's Frank Lampard were better midfielders than Paul Scholes. /Jordi
Sir Alex Ferguson's book continues: Gerrard is not a 'top, top player,' according to Ferguson. The Former Manchester United manager felt the England captain 'seldom had a kick' when coming up against a midfield of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. But despite this, Ferguson admits he did try to sign the Liverpool captain when word reached Old Trafford in 2005 that his days at Anfield were numbered. He concluded Gerrard had the ability to beat team's single-handedly. But he suggests Gerrard only had more success at international level than Michael Carrick because of 'bravado', with the United man suffering because of a quiet personality. Likewise, Ferguson believes Frank Lampard deserves credit for his club performances, but doesn't not consider the Chelsea midfielder an 'elite international footballer'. Gerrard has spoken of Ferguson's desire to sign him from Liverpool and the story is confirmed in the Scotsman's autobiography. 'We made a show of him in the transfer market, as did Chelsea, because the vibe was ...

Southampton's Rickie Lambert will start for England in their World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Friday after Daniel Sturridge pulled out. Sturridge has returned to Liverpool for treatment on a thigh injury. Lambert, the 31-year-old who scored against Scotland with his first touch on his debut last month, Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe are the only strikers left in Roy Hodgson's squad. Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones and Glen Johnson had withdrawn earlier. "We still have enough firepower with Lambert and Defoe to replace Sturridge and Rooney even though it would be wrong of me to say they are not players who will be missed," said Hodgson. The England manager confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Jack Wilshere will definitely play in midfield, with Arsenal's Theo Walcott and Manchester United forward Welbeck providing Lambert with assistance from the flanks. Goalkeeper Joe Hart and a back four of Kyle Walker, Ashley Cole, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill complete the line-up. Chelsea midfielde ...

A deal has all but been agreed, despite rival interest from Manchester United, courtesy of the friendship between Vitesse owner Merab Jordania and Roman Abramovich. "Things have gone well for me," Van Ginkel says, before joking, "it just doesn't seem to stop for me, hey?" The 20 year-old made his Holland debut last season and admits he saw the landmark as a significant step in his career. "For me it is a reward and a sign that I'm well on the way. Now the hope is that I can stay at this level. After that game, my phone was ringing off the ...

John Obi Mikel has revealed how a half-time post-mortem rescued Chelsea’s FA Cup campaign. The Blues were in danger of crashing out of the competition after Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United into a commanding two-goal lead at Old Trafford. But Rafa Benitez’s troops cleared the air during the interval and the introduction of Mikel and Eden Hazard seven minutes into the second half helped the holders take the quarter-final tie to a replay. Mikel, who replaced Frank Lampard against United, said: “After the first half we went back to the dressing room and had a chat. “We went out for the second half and started to show a bit more character, a bit more belief that we could actually come back into the game.” Hazard pulled one back for Chelsea with a stunning curling effort before Ramires levelled matters. And it would have been curtains for United had David De Gea not made a fine save to deny Juan Mata a late winner. Mikel, 25, added: “Now is becoming a crucial time in the se ...
Manchester - Manchester City galvanised their grip on second place in the English Premier League and trimmed Manchester United's lead back to 12 points with a 2-0 victory at home to nearest rivals Chelsea on Sunday. After Chelsea's Frank Lampard had seen a penalty saved by England colleague Joe Hart, City prevailed through a pair of fine second-half goals from man-of-the-match Yaya Toure and substitute Carlos Tevez. Although City's chances of retaining their league title remain decidedly slender, they now have a seven-point advantage over Chelsea, who could slip to fourth if Tottenham Hotspur overcome West Ham United on Monday. Both City manager Roberto Mancini and his Chelsea counterpart Rafael Benitez flooded their sides with midfielders at the Etihad Stadium, while Benitez opted to leave John Terry and Fernando Torres on thebench. City deployed Sergio Aguero as a lone striker and although he had to plough a lone furrow, it was the hosts who dominated the firsthalf. Visiting goalkeeper Petr Cech had to ...
Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez took advantage of a rare Frank Lampard penalty miss to fire Manchester City to their first Barclays Premier League win in a month. Lampard was a kick away from his 200th Chelsea goal when he lined up a second-half spot-kick at the Etihad Stadium but Joe Hart, who stayed on after fouling Demba Ba, saved from his England team-mate. Yaya Toure made Chelsea pay with a fine finish from inside the area and substitute Tevez made the 2-0 victory certain with a long-range effort late on. The result reduced Manchester United's lead at the top of the table to 12 points but, perhaps more importantly with the title drifting away, increased City's advantage over third- placed Chelsea to seven.

Report: Chelsea sign Partizan star Markovic to pre-contract. There are reports emerging in Serbia today which claim Chelsea have signed Partizan Belgrade youngster Lazar Markovic on a pre-agreement and that he will move to Stamford Bridge during the summer Transfer Window. This isn't the same as a player signing on a pre- contract, in the way Frank Lampard could do with an overseas club now, it's simply agreeing that a transfer will happen during the next window, similar to the way Manchester United signed Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling. Chelsea have been linked with the young player for some time and in December rumours got so frequent that Partizan sporting director Ljubisa Tumbakovic was quoted by Calciomercato.it having to deny reports they'd already sold the player "I swear on my mother, I know nothing about it. On Saturday I spoke with the president Dragan Djuric and he confirmed that he knew nothing of a transfer of Markovic to Chelsea. Perhaps journalists are better informed than us." We ca ...

Eight minutes later, Wayne Rooney showed the 32- year-old how to finish, stroking a loose ball into the back of the net after a good save by Julio Cesar. Manchester United International Round-up Fortunately, no Manchester United players were seemingly injured while on international duty. hirteen Manchester United players, spread across three different continents, were called into international duty for FIFA's February fixtures on Wednesday. All matches were friendlies with the exception of Javier Hernandez's (Chicharito) World Cup qualifier with Mexico. Here is a round-up of their involvement: * Wayne Rooney (England): The United No.10 was sharp in England's 2-1 defeat of Brazil in a friendly at Wembley as he bagged his side's opening goal and assisted on Frank Lampard's winner. Rooney was the lone striker in his side's 4-3-3 system. He went the full 90 minutes (f*** you Roy Hodgson). * Danny Welbeck (England): The 22-year-old started on the left-side of the attack. In general, he looked dangerous at times with his pace and movement but his touch and end-product was lacking on the night. Welbeck was substituted off in the 61st minute for James Milner. * To ...

Ashley Cole is to sign a new mega deal with Chelsea worth a whopping £10million. The staggering one-year extension makes England star Cole the world’s highest-paid left-back. A Chelsea insider said: “Ash is getting around £200,000 a week but he is worth every penny. Everyone is pleased it has been sorted at last.” But 32-year-old Cole’s bid to bag a longer deal beyond 2014 has ended in failure. Blues owner Roman Abramovich is adamant all players over 30 will be offered only one-year extensions. But Cole’s love for the club and the big pay rise from his current £150,000-a-week deal has convinced him to ignore interest from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris St Germain to stay at SW6. The Chelsea insider added: “The agreement is great news for Chelsea — and for Ashley. “We keep a world-class player and he gets a good pay rise that keeps him up with the game’s top earners.” But while Cole is staying, there is still no movement regarding midfielder Frank Lampard, 34, who is also o ...

Now Cole is looking to rebuild himself though, accepting the chance to re-sign for West Ham on a free transfer to escape the difficulties he was experiencing at Liverpool. And though there will be no sentiment on show at Old Trafford tomorrow evening when Manchester United look to dump West Ham out of the FA Cup, Ferdinand is hopeful Cole will prove to be an inspirational signing. 'The era we had there will be part of West Ham's history forever now, with so many players who went on to play for England and win league titles with other clubs,' said Ferdinand. 'It is unfortunate for West Ham those players did not stay there and their presence ...

Transfer Window opens on Tuesday. Expect fevered speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo, David Villa, Wesley Sneijder, Frank Lampard and Theo Walcott to be doing the rounds for the next month. Yes, the "Silly Season" has arrived. European football's January Transfer Window opens for business on Tuesday, giving clubs a month-long opportunity to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season. Top teams operating with strategic transfer plans, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United, rarely do major deals in this period, with their likely targets usually cup-tied for the Champions League and their managers put off by inflated prices. However, an inspired January signing could make the difference between winning the title, getting into Europe or surviving relegation, meaning plenty of deals will go through over the next 31 days.
