Arsene Wenger savoured a landmark away win for his side and said it gave Arsenal greater confidence ahead of a spell that could define the destiny of his team. The Gunners won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, recording their first away win against Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea since 2010. The victory, which was secured by goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, took Arsenal up to fifth and Wenger said in a news conference: "What is for sure is that it increases the level of belief and confidence. The five months in front of us are very important in the lifespan of the team. What you make of that will decide our season. "We looked in control away from home and we finally got a big win in a big game away from home. What is pleasing is that reinforces the belief of the team." Wenger, whose team conceded 17 goals in their three away games against the top three last season, praised his defence for keeping a clean sheet. He added: "We had a good solidarity level and good compactness. Sometimes, t ...

New Year’s Day couldn’t have been any better for a football fan as all 20 teams from the Barclays Premier League were in action on 1January 2014. Manchester United were up against Stoke City while Liverpool entertained Leicester City. Southampton awaited Arsenal and Manchester City were in action against Sunderland. But the big clash of the day was at White Hart Lane between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. The day commenced at the Britannia Stadium where the Red Devils and Stoke played out a 1-1 draw. Radamel Falcao netted the equaliser after Ryan Shawcross had put the Potters into the lead within two first-half minutes. Peter Crouch struck the upright and at the end both sides had to settle for a point. Manchester City looked to return to winning ways and they were made to toil hard for the three points at the Etihad Stadium. Following a goalless first-half Yaya Toure and Stevan Jovetic scored to give the defending champions a two-goal advantage. But Sunderland managed to draw level thanks to two form ...
David Silva gives Manchester City win over Crystal Palace, Manchester United held by Aston Villa: David Silva sparkled for Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace that wiped out Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday and added festive spice to the title race. Manchester United's pursuit of the table-toppers stalled with a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, their first dropped points in seven games, as local rivals City came through an encounter with Palace that threatened to turn into a frustrating occasion. Silva eased an increasingly tense atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium when he broke the deadlock shortly after halftime and then put an efficient victory to bed with his second goal soon after. Yaya Toure emphatically smashed home a late third. The victory for City, who are having to cope without all their main strikers through injury, moved them level on 39 points with Chelsea, who visit Stoke City on Monday, and ignited a title battle that had looked to be a one ...
Paul Scholes has said Manchester United face the prospect of losing the best local talent to their rivals after Manchester City opened a state-of-the- art academy this week. Scholes, 40, was a member of the famous crop of youth talent that came through the United academy in the early 1990s, along with the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Gary Neville. Giggs had initially belonged to the City youth ranks before being persuaded to join United, but Scholes said in his column for The Independent that youngsters may now be more inclined to pursue a career at the Etihad Stadium. "When I was a kid, it was the case among the lads I played football with that if Manchester United wanted to sign you then joining Manchester City was not even a consideration," he wrote. "United did not have to persuade or offer inducements. We would have walked there ourselves. "Thirty years on, and the picture in Manchester is very different and, as a United fan, it worries me. Trying to look at it from a neutral perspective, I ...

Preview: Manchester United vs Crystal Palace Date, time and coverage: Saturday 8 November, 3pm. Scene-setter: United put up a valiant display in Sunday's 1-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby, but the cold truth is the Reds have 13 points from 10 Barclays Premier League matches, equalling the club's worst start to a season since 1986. Victory at Old Trafford is therefore essential as Louis Van Gaal's men seek to climb the table. Form guide: United are without a win in three outings after recording consecutive draws against West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea before losing to City at the Etihad Stadium. If you draw confidence from past records then United's is excellent against Crystal Palace, having not lost to the Eagles in the 12 league meetings since a 3-0 defeat at Selhurst Park in May 1991. Meanwhile, Neil Warnock's side were beaten by Sunderland on Monday and have not won in four games. They currently sit 17th in the table, just above the relegation zone, with nine points from 30. Team news: Chris Smallin ...
Van Gaal explains dugout position Louis Van Gaal has revealed the reason why he has rarely entered the touchline technical area during his 11 matches as Manchester United manager. The Dutchman's tendency to remain seated in the dugout has been noted by Reds supporters, particularly when he made his first appearance on the touchline following Chris Smalling's dismissal in last Sunday's derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium. Speaking to MUTV at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, Van Gaal explained why he is always keen to take a more considered view of games from the dugout. "I am always on the bench because my philosophy is that we have to prepare our players to play the match and when you are shouting on the sideline, there is nobody you can contact during the game - especially when we are home at Old Trafford,” the boss said, referring to noise levels inside the ground. “But at that time when I was at the sideline [against City], it was because of the red card for Chris Smalling and I had to readjust o ...
Manchester United are back in the midst of another defensive injury crisis amid fears that Marcos Rojo could be out for six weeks with a dislocated shoulder. Rojo was carried off on a stretcher during United’s Manchester Derby defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and needed oxygen at one point. Further rests have confirmed the defender’s injury is a full dislocation and the recovery time could be six weeks or even longer. The exact timescale will depend on whether Rojo has torn or merely stretched the ligaments that usually hold the shoulder in place. Rojo’s father appeared to confuse matters last night when he told a TV station in Argentina: ‘The injury is not too severe. He will miss two or three games.’ However, senior sources at Old Trafford confirmed yesterday that the injury was a dislocation and it seems improbable the £16million signing could recover that quickly. This means United manager Louis Van Gaal will have to plan for the coming weeks of the campaign without ...

England Under-21s striker Harry Kane continued his impressive goalscoring form for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with a free-kick winner against Aston Villa. The 21-year-old has been amongst the goals for both club and country so far this season and his appearance from the bench in the second half at Villa Park helped Spurs come back from behind to collect all three points, courtesy of Kane's first Premier League strike this campaign. Elsewhere, Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for Manchester City as they secured a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Hart kept out, amongst others, the returning Wayne Rooney after the England captain made his return from suspension to the starting line-up for United. Read the full round-up here:

The A-Z of Manchester Derby. Familiar faces plotting Chelsea's title downfall The conventional wisdom before the season started was that the Premier League title was going to be fought over by Manchester City and Chelsea, with the Citizens as favourites to repeat their success of 2011-12. As the campaign has worn on and the clubs have accumulated points, that view has become even more entrenched given the annual spring decline of Arsenal's challenge and the disintegration of perennial champions Manchester United as a competitive force. Some insisted that the City squad was best equipped to take them to the Promised Land, while others had set their stall by Jose Mourinho's tactical nous, with both opinions bearing a certain amount of fruit over the past seven months. What nobody had seriously anticipated was that Liverpool would enter the last eight weeks of the season as serious contenders. While most Chelsea fans have been casting concerned glances toward the Etihad Stadium, one of their most hated rivals has crept up on the rails. ...
TOP TEN MOST RICHEST PLAYERS IN EPL There are some well known reports on who is the highest paid player in the Premier League as Wayne Rooney recently signed a colossal £300,000- a-week deal at Manchester United. Of course whilst earning high wages at a club does contribute towards overall wealth, footballers have several other avenues through which they can make money. So here are the 10 richest players currently plying their trade in the English top tier. 10. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City - £24m Arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2011 for a whopping £38m and is said to earn around £9.6m a year with the Citizens and is midway through a five- year deal with the club. Therefore this fortune is only set to go up - especially if the Argentine can score goals as important as the last minute winner that earned them the title in 2012. 9. Yaya Toure, Manchester City - £25m Aguero's City team-mate now and a midfielder who upon first arriving in England in 2009 from Barcelona was reported to be the highest pai ...
Tonight's BPL Fixtures Tuesday, 25 March 2014 21:45 Arsenal vs Swansea Newcastle vs Everton Man Utd vs Man City Preview David Moyes refused to reveal whether any of his injured centre-halves will be available for Manchester United's crunch derby against rivals City on Tuesday. Chris Smalling (hamstring), Jonny Evans (calf) and Rio Ferdinand (back) sat out the 2-0 win at West Ham on Saturday, but manager Moyes was giving no clues away regarding their fitness when questioned on the matter at his pre-match press conference. Winger Antonio Valencia (eye) is a doubt but defender Nemanja Vidic (suspension) and striker Robin Van Persie (knee) are definitely unavailable. Vincent Kompany will return from suspension to bolster City's back-line. Kompany sat out City's 5-0 thumping of Fulham at the Etihad Stadium after his sending-off in the previous week's Premier League win at Hull. United's central midfielders look set to run into trouble against Yaya Toure but Robin Van Persie's injury may have inadvertently given the hosts the tactical push needed to win In a season as awkward and inconsistent as Manchester United are enduring, two wins in a row feels like a serious milestone but, in searching for a third, they face a test significantly more difficult than Olympiakos and West Ham. The first serious on-pitch embarrassment of David Moyes's reign was at the hands of Manchester City, when Manuel Pellegrini's side tore apart a lethargic away team at the Etihad Stadium. With the Scot's future arguably riding on his ability to prevent this from becoming the latest in a series of aborted recoveries, a repeat of that 4-1 humiliation would be disastrous. City are not at home, however, where they have been at their most frighteningly dominant this season, and there is no question that, on paper, United have serious talent at their disposal. So is there a way for Moyes to take revenge? Deploy ...
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that the squad are just as desperate to beat Manchester City as the Red Devils fans are. David Moyes's men were humiliated by their title-chasing rivals in the reverse fixture in September when Manuel Pellegrini's men beat them 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium but, after two consecutive victories for his side, the England international is eager to avenge that defeat. "We understand the fans and the result they want and for us as players it's exactly the same," he told The Sun. "I've been part of this club for a long time now and you know what means a lot. This is certainly one of them. "We'll go into the City game looking forward to it. It's obviously a tough game but it's a tough game for both teams." United have also been thrashed more recently by Liverpool, who won 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier in March, and Carrick admits that the pain of that defeat still lingers in the dressing room. "It was a bad day for us and we suffered just as much as the fans," he added ...
Manchester United manager David Moyes is not concerned about putting a dent in Manchester City's title bid in Tuesday's derby at Old Trafford. City head across Manchester trailing leaders Chelsea by six points, but with three games in hand and knowing their title destiny is in their own hands. Manuel Pellegrini's side thrashed United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season, with the reigning champions having been unable to mount a robust defence of their crown. Moyes also presided over a 3-0 home defeat by arch-rivals Liverpool last weekend and, while plans are in place for next season, the United boss is keen to improve his record against the Premier League's bigger teams. "We are building already, with my thoughts and vision for next year," said Moyes. "In every game we have to start looking to that. We need to be in there competing for titles next year. "That's what this club has done and all the other clubs have had periods where they haven't been competing for titles. "There is an added impor ...

When you Manchester United decided not to hire Jose Mourinho and hired David Moyes instead, it was a monumental mistake. The Man City results just proved it. Negredo had already scored his first two goals to help City into a three-goal lead but there was no resting on his laurels as the break approached in this semi-final first leg. The Spain striker chased all the way back to the edge of his own penalty area to dispossess Mohamed Diame and that incident, as much as his goals, underlined why the Spaniard, nicknamed 'The Beast', has become such a big hit with City fans as well as the demanding work ethic Manuel Pellegrini has instilled into his free-scoring team. City's amazing goal output, especially at the Etihad Stadium, is quite staggering - 58 goals in 15 matches in all competitions now, just shy of four a game. But their cavalier attacking football is underpinned by work-rate. Negredo's second treble of the season plus goals from Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko rendered the second leg at Upton Park on January 21 academic. City can already book their hotel for their sixth visit to Wembley in four years and a final against either neighbours Manchester United or S ...
Edin Dzeko scored the winner as Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 1-0 to maintain their perfect home Barclays Premier League record this season. The Bosnia-Herzegovina striker converted Jesus Navas' cross midway through the second half to end Palace's stubborn resistance and make it 10 wins out of 10 at Etihad Stadium in the league for Manuel Pellegrini's side. The victory puts City two points clear at the top of the table, with title rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all in action on Sunday. Palace had chances of their own in the second half, with Joe Hart, who cut his eye in a challenge with Cameron Jerome in the first half, tested on three occasions, while Joel Ward missed a golden chance to equalise a minute after Dzeko's strike, heading off target when left all alone at a corner. Substitute Danny Welbeck came to Manchester United's rescue as his fourth goal in as many league matches secured a 1-0 win over Norwich City. Having replaced Ryan Giggs at half-time, the 23-year-old England striker mad ...

White Hart Pain! How AVB's £107m Spurs dream team is turning into a NIGHTMARE High up in the boardroom suite at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and director of football Franco Baldini were deep in discussion. Nobody quite knew where to look. The intimate old boardroom at Manchester City was ripped out over the summer in favour of an open-plan affair for around 200 well-heeled guests. Now everybody gets to gawp at the misery of the visitors: officials from Newcastle, Hull, Manchester United, Wigan, Everton, Norwich and Spurs have all experienced the insincere, sympathetic smiles this season. Somehow — with their team pasted 6-0 by City — Levy, Baldini and the rest of the Spurs contingent retained their dignity. Inside, they were ready to explode. This was the season they were meant to keep City, United, Arsenal and the rest within reach. Instead, they are ninth in the Premier League, eight points behind their North London rivals. To add to the executive frustration, there is discont ...

De Gea: Hart will bounce back (PA) Monday 4 November 2013 Joe Hart has earned backing from an unlikely source after Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea claimed the Manchester City goalkeeper will win back his first-team place. Hart will sit out his third game on Tuesday night when Costel Pantimilon plays in City's Uefa Champions League encounter with CSKA Moscow at the Etihad Stadium. With Fraser Forster likely to get his England chance in this month's friendly double-header against Chile and Germany, Hart is under pressure with both club and country. But De Gea, who had to overcome his own troubles before sealing his status as one of the English Premier League's top goalkeepers, is certain Hart will not be out of the limelight for long. "Joe Hart is a great keeper," he said. "It's very complicated to play at the top level and to never make mistakes. "I am sure he will work very hard to go back into the first 11 and sooner or later he will make it."

Sergio Aguero scored twice as Manchester City came from behind to beat CSKA Moscow and reignite their Champions League Group D campaign. Manuel Pellegrini had complained about the pitch at the Khimki Arena, and the City boss must have feared the worst when Zoran Tosic put the hosts ahead. The Former Manchester United player lobbed Joe Hart before Aguero levelled after David Silva's cross. Aguero capped a gutsy City display by heading home Alvaro Negredo's cross. It was far from comfortable for Pellegrini and his players, who were forced to endure some anxious moments against the Russian champions to record their second away win of the group stage. Play media Pellegrini condemns racist chants Indeed City goalkeeper Hart had to produce a fine stop with an outstretched leg to deny Japan international Keisuke Honda an equaliser deep into stoppage time. But victory over CSKA in the return game at the Etihad Stadium on 5 November ought to allow City to start planning for the knockout stages for the first time. ...

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini believes Yaya Toure is in prime form and earning reward for his hard work in training. Toure's fine start to the season continued as he struck his fifth goal in seven games in a 5-0 Capital One Cup thrashing of Championship side Wigan at the Etihad Stadium. It came direct from a free-kick in almost identical fashion to the midfielder's set-piece strikes against Newcastle and Hull last month. In addition the Ivorian scored a fine long-range effort against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League a week ago and added another from inside the box in last Sunday's derby destruction of Manchester United. Toure, 30, was not at his most influential as City mounted an underwhelming title challenge last season but he appears revitalised as Pellegrini's input starts to take hold. Pellegrini said: "He is a very important player for the team. "I don't know what happened last year but all the players are playing with trust and a goal always give them trust. I think it is very import ...

United get boost ahead of derby 19 September By Reuters Manchester, England – Manchester United fans have been buying Marouane Fellaini wigs with their new Belgian showing signs he can add a cool head and quality passing to the midfield just in time for Sunday's derby against City. Last season's champions and runners-up meet at the Etihad Stadium, hoping midweek Champions League success can ignite their domestic campaigns after some uninspired performances from both in their first four games, each taking just seven points. While Wayne Rooney's return to form in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen stole the headlines, Fellaini's physical presence and ability to hold the ball in his first start since signing just before the transfer deadline added a new dimension. It was no coincidence that a side who had not scored in two of their last three league games and only netted from set pieces in the other were suddenly able to put together more meaningful charges forward with the big Belgian on the pitch. Isco (Malaga and Spain) HE is likely to follow Manuel Pellegrini to the Etihad Stadium after two seasons in southern Spain. Isco, an attacking midfielder, would slot into the mould with other similar players such as Samir Nasri and David Silva. The Daily Express says City have been alerted to the availability of Former Arsenal captain Fabregas, as Manchester United boss David Moyes made the Spaniard his top transfer target. BPL TOP 5 EXPENSIVE TEAMS: 1. Manchester City - £380m Manchester City spent a club record fee to complete the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero in the summer of 2011 and, after an instrumental role in delivering the title in his first season with the club, the Argentine remains the most highly-valued player on the books at the Etihad Stadium. According to Transfermarkt, Aguero's present market value of £39.5 million places him at the top of Manchester City's rankings, although he is closely followed by fleet-footed Spaniard David Silva. City spent £25 million to acquire Silva from Valencia, and his value has soared since his arrival in Manchester, with the 27-year-old worth 54 percent more now than he was upon arrival almost three years ago. Manchester City have two other players valued in excess of £30 million in Yaya Toure (£31.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£31m), making Roberto Mancini's squad the most valued in the Premier League. 2. Spain's World Cup and double European Championship winner had wrestled back his starting place from replacement Antonio Adanbefore the injury but that setback forced Mourinho into signing fellow 31-year-old goalkeeper Diego Lopez from Sevilla. Lopez looks likely to continue in goal in Manchester but Casillas could find himself on the replacements' bench with Madrid due to arrive in the north-west on Monday before training at City's Etihad Stadium to continue preparations for the second leg. Manchester City Linked With Move to Sign Barcelona Forward.Alexis Sanchez wanted at the Etihad Stadium this summer. Manchester City are set to make a move to sign forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in the summer, according to the Manchester Evening News. The 24-year-old Chilean international Sanchez has failed to live up to expectations at the Nou Camp this season in a Barcelona side that has dominated the La Liga title race and could well be sold on in the summer. Manchester United had been credited with interest in the former Udinese forward, but it is their Premier League rivals who look set to make the first move with manager Roberto Mancini believing Sanchez would help City’s problems in wide areas. City have struggled for creativity from the flanks this year following the sale of Adam Johnson to Sunderland and Scott Sinclair’s failure to hold down a first-team berth following his move from Swansea City last summer. Without natural width, City have been predictable at times this season and Manc ...

The £27million January 2011 signing from Wolfsburg has started just seven games in all competitions for City in 2013 and is understood to be frustrated. Dzeko has carved a reputation as a super-substitute after scoring 13 goals this season but the striker may not stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond the end of the campaign. "I love the Bundesliga and I will return to the Bundesliga. The only thing I don't know is when," said the Bosnia international in the Daily Mirror. Reports have even suggested Dzeko has held talks with Borussia Dortmund, who look set to lose star striker Robert Lewandowski this summer, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United heavily linked.
Manchester - Manchester City galvanised their grip on second place in the English Premier League and trimmed Manchester United's lead back to 12 points with a 2-0 victory at home to nearest rivals Chelsea on Sunday. After Chelsea's Frank Lampard had seen a penalty saved by England colleague Joe Hart, City prevailed through a pair of fine second-half goals from man-of-the-match Yaya Toure and substitute Carlos Tevez. Although City's chances of retaining their league title remain decidedly slender, they now have a seven-point advantage over Chelsea, who could slip to fourth if Tottenham Hotspur overcome West Ham United on Monday. Both City Manager Roberto Mancini and his Chelsea counterpart Rafael Benitez flooded their sides with midfielders at the Etihad Stadium, while Benitez opted to leave John Terry and Fernando Torres on thebench. City deployed Sergio Aguero as a lone striker and although he had to plough a lone furrow, it was the hosts who dominated the firsthalf. Visiting goalkeeper Petr Cech had to ...

This is a team that always goes for the win in every game. "We've got a squad littered with great players fully committed to the ...

The Premier League giants meet at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with battle lines already being drawn ahead of a summer spending war over two of Europe's most coveted strikers SPECIAL REPORT By Jonathan Birchall The sub-plots whenever Chelsea and Manchester City meet these days are always fascinating. Britain's two richest clubs locked in a battle to establish themselves as the Premier League's brightest and biggest force under a spotlight that always seems to focus on the respective coaches. But Sunday's match-up will also this time play prelude to another fascinating contest between the two sides; a summer transfer battle that promises to dominate the headlines and potentially help shape which - if either - will have the best hope of overhauling Manchester United's dominance next season. The battle lines have already been drawn, transfer targets established - and, pertinently, shared - with Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani the precious objects of desire. Chelsea's interest in Atletico Madrid superstar ...
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is determined not to fall for Manchester City's title kidology. As they attempt to close a 12-point gap that could have widened to 15 before they face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, City have been keen to talk up the potential for Manchester United to drop points over the final 12 games. Their hope is sustained by the knowledge United blew an eight-point advantage in the space of just six matches last term and Roberto Mancini is confident it may happen again. But Sir Alex Ferguson said: "They are going on about us dropping points - but I would say the same thing to be honest. The fact of the matter is they will drop points too. It is unavoidable." Ferguson went on: "Teams drop points. It is a tough league. It is not easy winning all your games. At the moment we have a good momentum. The only thing we can do is try to win our next match and see where it takes us." Yet there is already half an eye turning towards that crucial Champions League second-leg enc ...

Mancini critics 'don't understand football' Roberto Mancini has laughed off speculation he will lose his job if Manchester City are knocked out of the Fa Cup by Leeds, and said that if he is sacked, every Premier League manager should suffer the same fate. Former City defender Danny Mills recently suggested that, with the champions 12 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United, Mancini would be fired next week if Leeds win at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. But the Italian professed ignorance of a threat to his position on Friday and was unworried by comments from ex-players, claiming his critics don't understand football. "Probably the players that won a lot of trophies in the history," he said, aware that he ended City's 35-year wait for silverware by lifting the Fa Cup in 2011. "I don't know who are the 'many people' [who say this]." Mancini believes his record at the Etihad Stadium should ensure he keeps his job and says he has made huge progress since his appointment in December 2009. The C ...

Manchester United's march towards a 20th league tittle is taken on unstoppable proportions it was apparent in the ruthless manner in which they dispatched Liverpool to record a home-&-away league double over their historic rivals. In truth, it has been apparent in all of United's marquee domestic tussles this season. In six matches against who most would consider their five biggest rivals, Sir Alex's team have chalked up five victories The common themes are a marquee-match mentality that was sometimes absent last season, & a cavalier approach that has yielded outstanding results. By contrast, United's 2011-2012 league campaign was memorable for the home-&-away reverses against City, the unforgettable 6-1 humiliation @ Old Trafford & the decisive 1-0 defeat at Etihad Stadium. Sir Alex's side failed to rise to the occasion in other plum fixtures last season. They drew 3-3 at Chelsea & 1-1 at Liverpool, even if they swatted aside Arsenal & Tottenham home & away. In total, they collected a creditable 20points ...

The Bundesliga champions have accepted that Lewandowski wants to leave the club and link up with former colleague Shinji Kagawa at Old Trafford. The Poland international is said to have agreed the terms of a five-year contract with United and the fee, likely to be around £12-14million, will be rubber stamped at the end of the season. Mancini promises more trophies Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has promised more silverware this season. City have seen their Champions League quest end at the group stage and they have fallen six points behind Manchester United in their Barclays Premier League title defence, but Mancini remains confident. The Italian is hopeful of overhauling their neighbours to retain the title while he is also focusing on a repeat of the 2011 Fa Cup success. The 48-year-old said: "I think we will win. "We have two targets and I think if we work better than the first six months and we forget what we did last year we have more chance to win the league." Mancini, who was appointed at the Etihad Stadium three years ago this week, has grown accustomed to success during his managerial career. In each full season in charge of Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter Milan and now City, he has earned tangible reward in terms of a trophy or a Champions League place. He said: "I always win. Vidic set to return Manchester United club captain Nemanja Vidic could return from injury to face Sunderland on Saturday, possibly in place of the doubtful Jonny Evans. The Serbian has not featured since undergoing a knee operation in September, shortly after his fifth and last appearance of the season during a 1-0 win over Galatasaray in the Uefa Champions League. There were rumours that Vidic was ahead of schedule and would start last Sunday’s Manchester Derby, whispers Sir Alex Ferguson quickly poured scorn on when quizzed on the topic prior to kick-off. “No. definitely not,” the boss said. “To put him in at City for his first game back would be crazy but I think the Sunderland game definitely.” Coincidently, Vidic’s return to the first team fold directly aligns with fitness doubts over defensive-deputy Evans, who was forced off with a hamstring injury at the Etihad Stadium and, as a result, is now unlikely to face the Black Cats on Saturday. “Evans had a hamstring problem,” Sir Alex e ...
Barry charged over derby conduct Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry has been charged over his behaviour during his side's 3-2 loss to Manchester United, the Football Association announced on Tuesday. The England international is accused of "using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official" and has until 1600 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge. The charge reportedly concerns an incident that occurred after the end of Sunday's match. If Barry accepts the accusation, he will be banned for one match but if he attempts to contest it, the suspension could be increased to two matches. The charge against Barry adds to the fall-out from the stormy encounter at the Etihad Stadium, which saw United claim victory thanks to an injury-time goal by Robin Van Persie. The FA are investigating after United defender Rio Ferdinand was struck by a coin as he celebrated Van Persie's goal, while Greater Manchester Police arrested 13 people and charged nine of them for a range of offences. Mancini turns on Nasri, Balotelli after derby loss MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini reserved pointed criticism for Samir Nasri and Mario Balotelli after his side's damaging derby defeat by Manchester United. City went down 3-2 in injury time at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Robin Van Persie's 92nd-minute free-kick bringing United victory after Pablo Zabaleta looked to have claimed a share of the spoils with a late equaliser. Van Persie's free-kick took a telling deflection off Nasri, who appeared to shy away as the ball arrowed towards him, while Balotelli stormed straight down the tunnel after being substituted in the 52nd minute. Carlos Tevez, Balotelli's replacement, stepped out of the defensive wall as Van Persie prepared to strike his decisive set-piece, but Mancini dismissed suggestions he had instructed the Argentine to move. "It was a dangerous free-kick," said the Italian. "I don't know why (Tevez left the wall), but we made a mistake there." Tevez's departure from th ...

However, the City's intention was a little bothered by the injury storm. Micah Richards (knee) and James Milner (hamstring) likely will miss this important match. David Silva is another player who likely will also miss this match. However, coach Roberto Mancini could be replaced by Javi Garcia to play more defensively. Good news came from Gael Clichy, Aleksandar Kolarov, and Jack Rodwell who gradually recovered and was able to play in this match. Kubu United, not without problems. Anderson hamstring a ...

Ronaldinho believes Lionel Messi is currently the best player in the world, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, and also expects Neymar to reach the Barcelona forward's heights one day! Manchester United's desire to buy Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski doesn't scare Jurgen Klopp! Wesley Sneijder has revealed that he has no intention of signing a new - and lower-paid - Inter contract! Massimo Moratti remains confident that the Netherlands star will stay, however. Sir Alex Ferguson: United are ready for City challenge Three years ago, the Blues were just a noisy irritant to the Manchester United boss. Now, with an Fa Cup and Premier League collected, City have turned the volume up. And Ferguson is prepared for it. "They're screaming now," he said ahead of Sunday's derby at the Etihad Stadium. "It's great. Challenges are what we're made of. "I've been lucky that, in my time here, I've been involved with great competitions against teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and now City. There are no dull moments. "We don't run from challenges." There does seem something special about this particularly rivalry, though. The pain of that never-to-be-forgotten final day last season, when United were technically champions when their last game was completed at Sunderland, only to have the prize snatched away from them by Sergio Aguero with virtually the last kick of the entire campaign, was more acute for the fans because so many had to face their City counterparts on the Manc ...
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) – Roberto Mancini believes Manchester City cannot afford to lose the derby against title rivals Manchester United on Sunday. The reigning Premier League champions trail league leaders United by three points heading into the crunch game at the Etihad Stadium. Are you looking forward to the Sunday Derby?
Manchester City FC 1 vs 1 Everton - Played … - Thank you very much for joining me this evening as we took in that 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium. I've been Chris Teale, and it's been a pleasure to have your company. 90′ + 3 - FULL-TIME, and Everton take a point against the Premier League champions. That won’t help City’s title challenge, with Manchester United playing the late game against Reading. It was a game slightly low on quality and definitely low on real chances, so both teams will perhaps be glad to take a point, although Everton’s winless streak continues. 90′ + 2 - Substitution Nikica Jelavic John Heitinga (Everton) 90′ - Three minutes of added time will be played. 89′ - Free kick Everton, it bobbles away from Hart slightly but his defenders are there to get rid of the ball. Slight worry there for the England man. 88′ - Yellow Card - P. Zabaleta (Manchester City FC) 86′ - City pour forward again, but Sylvain Distin is there to head away. 84′ - Nasri draws a foul from Jelav ...

Aston Villa are battling Fiorentina to sign 19-year-old Nancy left-back Massadio Haidara. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini will not be given transfer funds to strengthen his side in January unless injuries pile up at the Etihad Stadium. Harry Redknapp, 65, has been lined up by Queens Park Rangers to take over from Mark Hughes after the London side face Manchester United on Saturday
Carlos Tevez lifted reigning champions Manchester City to victory on Saturday which will leave manager Roberto Mancini happy to walk away with three points and move just one point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea. After a low-key first hour, Carlos Tevez stunned the crowd at Etihad Stadium with a 25 yard strike past keeper Michel Vorm who could not stretch far enough. The Swans from Swansea City would not die though. After two injuries in regulation time, City had to kill off 12 minutes of injury time, but they would pull through. With Manchester United playing Chelsea tomorrow, Manchester City could find themselves in sole position of second place in the Premier League or they could sit one point back of leaders Chelsea. Either way, City will look ahead to an easy match next week against West Ham while cross-town rivals Manchester United will have a tough match against Arsenal. Just thought I'd inform you.

Robin Van Persie has reportedly indicated to Arsenal that Juventus are his favoured suitors from the choice of the three most prominent clubs pursuing his signature. The Italian champions have made no secret of their desire to claim the signature of the Arsenal captain, and will have doubtless been buoyed by the revelation that Van Persie will not sign a new contract. Juventus will be further boosted by the news that Van Persie has identified Turin as his preferred destination, as reported by the Independent, although the 28-year-old has not ruled out the possibility of joining either Manchester City or Manchester United. However, it is claimed, that Van Persie would rather leave Arsenal for Old Trafford than the Etihad Stadium if presented with a choice between the two, although Arsene Wenger remains incredibly reluctant to sell the Dutchman to a Premier League rival. Van Persie returned to Arsenal training on Monday following an extended holiday and will meet with Wenger and Gunners chief-executive Ivan ...

Patrice Evra and Carlos Tevez tussle at the recent Manchester City v Manchester United derby match at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester United and Manchester City may have to wait a year if they want to sign Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie. The Arsenal striker’s future has been the subject of intense speculation as his current deal expires next summer, while Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson are reportedly keen to acquire his services. However, a report in The Sun claims the Emirates Stadium manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis are willing tolet him run down the remainder of the contract rather than let him go to Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium. Samir Nasri posed Arsenal with a similar problem last year, but the North London side opted to sell to City rather than lose him for nothing this summer after he made it clear he would not sign an extension. Van Persie’s situation differs in that he is far more valuable to the side and will be almost 30 when his contract runs out – Wenger has always been reluctant to offer long-term deals to players over that age. Wenger and Gazidis are due to meet with t ...
All of England was a stage and all the players merely, erm, players, but it was Roberto Mancini's Manchester City side who proved the star performers in the Premier League's most stunning piece of drama yet. Their stoppage-time triumph to come from behind to beat QPR 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium was straight out of a brilliant script and made for astonishing theatre as Manchester United, winners at Sunderland, had the trophy snatched away at the last second.
So goodbye David Pleat. Goodbye to your jig at Maine Road after you sent Manchester City down in 1983. Goodbye Ricky Villa and your slalom run that ripped the Fa Cup away from City in 1981. Goodbye Paul Hendrie, the giant-killer who scored the winner when Halifax Town cut City down. Goodbye Steve Daley, Bernardo Corradi, Lee Bradbury and all the others who carried the torch of mediocrity and disappointment for many of the last 44 years. And goodbye to John Benson, Jimmy Frizzell, Mel Machin, Brian Horton, Phil Neal and all the other City Managers who couldn’t get the job done. Yesterday, amid scenes of scarcely believable drama at the Etihad Stadium, City chased all of their ghosts away. They did not want to leave. In fact, their spirits lingered until a few seconds from the end of one of the most remarkable matches in Premier League history. Then Sergio Aguero scored the 94th minute winner against QPR that finally took City out of the reach of Manchester United. Only then did it feel as if the haunting ...
Manchester City snatches EPL crown Sergio Aguero ended Manchester City's 44-year search for a title in extraordinary fashion as two goals in stoppage-time gave Roberto Mancini's men a scarcely-believable 3-2 win over 10-man Queens Park Rangers. The title looked certain to be heading for the red side of the city for the 20th time as Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United a 1-0 win at Sunderland and City trailed 2-1 heading into the last minute. But substitute Edin Dzeko headed an equaliser with 91 minutes on the clock then Aguero fired home three minutes later to send a disbelieving Etihad Stadium into rapture. Knowing a win would almost certainly be enough to end the long wait, City went ahead through Pablo Zabaleta's 39th-minute strike before the home side were stunned by a 48th-minute equaliser from Djibril Cisse. Despite the ridiculous sending-off of former City man Joey Barton on 55 minutes for an elbow behind the play on Carlos Tevez, QPR went ahead through Jamie Mackie in the 66th minute - and looked s ...
Roberto Mancini's side seemed to be destined for second place for much of the afternoon as Queens Park Rangers produced a display of resilience to thwart their opponents. The situation was desperate as the match at the Etihad Stadium moved into injury time. QPR, down to 10 men for the final 35 minutes of the match after Joey Barton's red card, were winning 2-1 and set to become the first side this season to beat City on their own patch. More significantly, Manchester United were winning 1-0 at Sunderland thanks to Wayne Rooney's header - which meant City had to secure victory to win their first title in 44 years. With 75 seconds of the five minutes of injury time elapsed Edin Dzeko fired in to level the match and set the tone for an astonishing finale. And with less than two minutes remaining, Sergio Aguero fired past Paddy Kenny from close range to spark massive celebrations in the stadium. Dramatic twist For much of the afternoon, United looked set fair for their 13th Premier League crown. Rooney's goal ...

QPR defender, Anton Ferdinand, admitted that her brother who plays for Manchester United, Rio Ferdinand, had called him to help Manchester United win the Premier League by beating Manchester City to bring QPR this weekend. Manchester City are at home to QPR at Etihad Stadium on Sunday 913/5) later. Not only helped Manchester United to win, QPR will surely escape relegation if the troops managed to beat Roberto Mancini. Anton Ferdinand said: "Rio has called me to help him (bring United's title)." "But the game was about us. I am concentrating on QPR because we have a great obligation to ourselves. We should go there (Etihad Stadium) and get a point, if not three. I believe in my teammates that we might be able to do it. "If we get the points and United and Rio win the title, then I would be happy for him. If United do not win it, but QPR still win I will still be very, very happy. Not since Denis Law struck for Manchester City as Manchester United were relegated at Old Trafford in 1974 has a backheeled goal appeared so unappreciated by the scorer. As Paul Scholes, born later that momentous year, flicked United into the lead with masterly expertise, there was barely a flicker of a celebration. No raised arm, no smile, no indication of joy. Not for the first time, a glance at Scholes offered an accurate appraisal of United. There was an air of resignation about the old timer, a sense that a scoring a goal, no matter how skilful, when the Premier League trophy seems headed for the Etihad Stadium was the footballing equivalent of winning a minor battle and losing a major war. But both goalscorers' reaction told a tale in themselves. Scholes was the face of realism, Ashley Young the voice of implausible optimism. When the winger doubled United's advantage against Swansea, he charged into the visitors' net, retrieving the ball and haring back to the half-way line. It was as though, even ...

Roberto Mancini: 'Football is crazy but Manchester City deserve this' Manchester City, often castigated for being defensive, took their chance while the normally penetrative United were blunt Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, left, exchanges a few words with his Manchester City counterpart, Roberto Mancini. Man Utd gaffer fergie says Rooney was careless- -dissapointed with Rooney Wayne Rooney is hoping to surpass Dennis Viollet's and George Best's 179 goals in a Manchester United shirt. Photograph: Jason Cairnduff/Action Images Sir Alex Ferguson gave Wayne Rooney a ticking off despite his two-goal contribution to Manchester United's 4-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday. It took him to 31 for the season but Rooney looked unimpressed when he was replaced by Dimitar Berbatov. "He was careless," said the United manager. "Wayne has to play on the edge of a game, when it is really close and competitive. "When the game gets to that casual bit, he is worse than the rest of them. He gets really casual about it. It is better when he is on the edge. Then he is a marvellous player." Despite his initial reaction Rooney echoed his manager's sentiments after the match when talking to MUTV: "It was nice to score two goals but I didn't think my performance was good enough," he said. "Obviously we were disappoin ...
