Gary Neville: "When you play with Michael Carrick you think there is authority, control, peace. When you are on a football pitch playing against Liverpool or Manchester City, you need peace around you as well. You sometimes don’t want people running around like blue *** flies. Scholes and Carrick together was peaceful. It was like going into a bar and hearing a piano playing. It’s relaxing. Listening to some good rock is good and you like that too but sometimes it’s nice to listen to a piano. Carrick’s a piano. If you look at Louis Van Gaal at the start of the season and we were struggling, ask yourself who wasn’t playing? Michael Carrick wasn’t playing. Now he’s playing and the club went on a great unbeaten run. I think he would be first or second on Louis Van Gaal’s team-sheet because he brings control and authority. Manchester United fans get it. I wanted Bryan Robson and someone to run through brick walls and coming out with bandages wrapped around his head. That’s what Manchester U ...

The injury crisis in Manchester United is to be blamed on Louis Van Gaal's training method according to former captain Bryan Robson. Van Gaal is determined to perform and not fail like his predecessor, Moyes. He is aware of the little potentials the boys have and is virtually forcing out performance from them through drills and double training sessions that the players were not used to in Fergie and Moyes' era.

Cristiano Ronaldo has paid Angel Di Maria a huge compliment going into today’s Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea. The world player of the year believes that Manchester United have finally found the man to fill his boots at Old Trafford. Since United sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a then world record £80 million they have the lacked the goals, assists and speed on the counter attack that Ronaldo once offered. But the Portugal ace believes they have acquired this skill set in £59.7 million summer signing Di Maria and he’s excited to see what his former team mate can do in today’s clash with Chelsea. Ronaldo and Di Maria became friends during the four years they spent together at the Santiago Bernabéu, to the extent that Ronaldo pleaded with the Champions League winners not to let him leave the club this summer. Di Maria now wears Ronaldo’s old shirt number at Manchester United and so far he’s produced some incredible performances in the illustrious number seven worn by Bryan Robson, G ...
A host of Manchester United legends including Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, Bryan Robson, Norman Whiteside and Steve Bruce attended the funeral of Sandy Busby - the son of former Old Trafford manager Sir Matt this morning in Chorlton. United chief executive Ed Woodward, who also attended Friday's funeral, said in a statement: "I am shocked and saddened by news of Sandy's death. He was such a genuine person who had a deep and rich love for the club that his father did so much to establish in the hearts of millions around the world. "Sandy understood better than almost anyone what the United way means and his enthusiasm, his wit and his affection for the club will be sorely missed. "Our thoughts go out to Irene and his family at such a sad time."
After a busy summer transfer window and the release of all squad numbers for the 2014/15 season, Manchester United have new incumbents of several red shirts. Among them, loan signing Radamel Falcao will wear no.9, record capture Angel Di Maria has taken no.7 and Belgian starlet Adnan Januzaj is the club’s new no.11. All three will hope to live up to the reputation of some bona fide United legends to have worn those numbers down the years. No.7 is the most iconic of all jerseys at Old Trafford, having been donned by some of the team’s all-time greats, including George Best (who could legitimately lay claim to no.11 as well), Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Those five have a combined 1,802 appearances and 563 goals. Sir Bobby Charlton is probably our most famous no.9 and he wore the number for most of his epic, 758-game Reds career. More recently, Andy Cole plundered over a century of goals in the shirt as he helped United win the Treble in 1998/99. Ryan Giggs made the n ...

20 Jul 2014 16:20:00 The Red Devils legend believes the former Ajax boss will give his countryman the armband ahead of Wayne Rooney, in the wake of Nemanja Vidic's departure this summer Manchester United legend Bryan Robson is confident that Louis Van Gaal will make Robin Van Persie his captain at Old Trafford this season. This summer has seen the departures of several senior figures from United, with previous club captain Nemanja Vidic joining Inter and Rio Ferdinand signing for QPR, while Patrice Evra appears set for a move to Juventus. Some suggested that Wayne Rooney's new bumper five- year deal at Old Trafford in February included a clause which ensured he would inherit the captaincy once Vidic departed. But Robson, one of the most iconic captains in United's history, believes Van Gaal will give his countryman Van Persie the honour, having entrusted him with the armband for Netherlands at this summer's World Cup. "Robin was his captain of Holland, so that is an obvious one," Robson told the Press *** ...
Manchester United legend Bryan Robson expects Louis Van Gaal to transform the team into immediate title challengers. United came seventh last season but Robson thinks they can "bounce back straight away" under Van Gaal. "You could see Holland were very well organised and there was discipline. Hopefully, he can bring that to Manchester. I think he will," he said. Robson also feels that the United players will want to make amends for last season's performances, which cost David Moyes his job after he had been chosen to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson . "A lot of the players let themselves down and didn't perform the way they had under Sir Alex ," Robson told BBC Sport . "They will be up for the challenge and will be excited by the new coach."

OPINION: The next Manchester United club captain! July 3, 2014 When Nemanja Vidic announced midway through last season that he was leaving Manchester United, a lot was made on who should be the next captain of our great club. Vidic had 8 successful seasons at Manchester United, consisting of 211 games, and after captaining the club for the first five matches of the 2010-11 season, Vidic successfully inherited the captain’s armband from Gary Neville as the team and club captain on a permanent basis. Since that time Vidic has embodied all that there is in being captain of our great club. From the previous club greats such as the midfield enforcer Roy Keane, to past greats such as Steve Bruce, our longest-serving captain in Bryan Robson, to our club legend Sir Bobby Charlton, wearing the captain’s armband at Manchester United signifies what the club is all about. With Vidic now gone, who is next in line? If David Moyes was still Manchester United’s manager today, then there would be no discussion. Moye ...
Former Manchester United star Bryan Robson believes that the club need just a few new additions as opposed to a complete overhaul this summer. Widespread reports have claimed that new manager Louis Van Gaal will have more than £100m to spend on players. While some have suggested that major changes need to be made to the side that fell to seventh in the Premier League table last season, Robson thinks that there is still plenty of talent within the squad. "Everyone keeps saying it needs to be a major rebuild – I just don't see it like that," Robson told the Manchester Evening News. "I think we have some great players within the squad. We need three of four top-class players." Southampton left-back Luke Shaw , Germany internationals Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mats Hummels and Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
Denis Irwin has paid tribute to Ryan Giggs after his retirement. Irwin played behind the veteran midfielder on the left flank during the 1990s and early 2000s. "I suppose all good things come to an end, but what an unbelievable player he has been for Manchester United. The way he's done it as well is testament to himself. Someone called him a 'freak of nature' at one point – he's been an unbelievable player, and certainly a legend." Irwin was replaced by Giggs against Everton in March 1991 as the latter made his Reds debut, and believes the new Old Trafford no.2 is among the best he has ever played with. "I was fortunate enough to play with Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Bryan Robson – all fantastic players. Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes – unbelievable talents, but Ryan is right up there with them. "He was a fantastic player to have in front of you because you knew he would help you out with your defensive duties as well. He wasn't afraid to do the dirty side of football, to track ba ...

Bryan Robson urges Manchester United to keep hold of coaching staff
Louis Van Gaal MUST keep Giggs and 'Class of 92' at United - Bryan Robson Red Devils legend Bryan Robson believes Van Gaal should be forced to keep Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt at Old Trafford. "I think it would be very disappointing for those lads not to be kept on, in whatever role, as they are part of Manchester United, the fans would be very disappointed if they don't have a future in the club."If you are talking about bringing all these people in you have to make sure that you are making the right decision and you are not allowing them too much rope.It is up to the board to step in and say 'you can have leeway with this, but there are definitely restrictions on this part of the club'.That has to come from the club rather than the new coach. Sometimes I think when you go into a new club, why not give the staff a chance?" Do you you think the class of 92 should remain at Old Trafford as part of our future?
Carlo Ancelotti : 'I am sorry for David Moyes. In general this is the life of a coach,' Ancelotti said. Sometimes things don't come out well and they get rid of you and that's it. 'I was a bit surprised because Manchester United are not normally like this. It might be normal in another club but at United after 26 years I was surprised.' for Bryan Robson too was surprised when he heard of the news of sacking Moyes because Manchester United give the managers chance to prove themselves and they usually don't sack. Neville says that he's also surprised because SAF and Sexton were given a chance to prove themselves ~
Bryan Robson has given his support to Ryan Giggs as he takes on an interim managerial role at Manchester United.
My Manchester UniTED VIEW Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Gary Neville. All players who wore that armband and led a Manchester United team full of character and resilience. Our squad lacks character now. Some of the players we have don't embody that United mentality. No passion, no desire nothing. It pained me yesterday watching Patrice Evra, our Captain on the day, shake hands and share a jokes with Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany in the tunnel before the game. Really, is that what the rivalry has become? A meet and greet for the players? Have they lost the idea of what this rivalry means to the fans? (Or any other rivalry for that matter). Roy Keane would never be in the tunnel laughing it off with Patrick Vieira. We're losing our identity, and it's alarming. We've gone from Fergie saying "i'll knock Liverpool off their perch." to Moyes saying: "We aspire to be like City." Really? A kick in the teeth for every Manchester United fan. I feel let down, i feel betrayed. We offer suppo ...
"It's the greatest job in the world, the greatest football club in the world, and the team that I’ve supported all my life, so it’s a dream come true," "If we go back to the legacy of the club, particularly when we look back at different players, whether Billy Meredith, Stan Pearson, Duncan Edwards, they all have that piece of history, they’ve played for the greatest club in the world. They’ve been part of that. Then you look at the Holy Trinity: Best, Law and Charlton. "The thing about Manchester United and playing for Manchester United is that while Best is no longer with us, Law and Charlton are now ambassadors for the club. United see the significance of that, they see the importance of playing for this great club. "And the journey continues, you look at Denis Law, Sir Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson, Peter Schmeichel, and if we look at some of the current ambassadors, Gary Neville, one of the greatest captains this club has ever had, so that’s the significance. And Wayne Rooney going forward, ...

Manchester United will announce Juan Mata’s Old Trafford squad number when the £37.1 million club record transfer is registered with the Premier League on Monday – raising the prospect of the Spaniard becoming the latest player to wear the iconic No 7 shirt. With Wayne Rooney occupying the No 10 shirt worn by Mata at Chelsea , the 25-year-old is likely to be given the option of seven or nine – both currently vacant. With George Best wearing a variety of numbers depending on his position each match, and more often 11 than seven, Bryan Robson is regarded as United’s first celebrated No 7, the midfielder having worn the shirt for more than a decade until Eric Cantona in November 1992. When Cantona retired in 1997, David Beckham was handed the No 7 shirt by Sir Alex Ferguson, who then bestowed the shirt on his replacement, a teenaged Cristiano Ronaldo , in 2003. Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia have since worn the shirt. Valencia relinquished it last summer to return to No 25 after a difficult 12 mo ...

Man United in crisis? Ex-players, fans and pundits have their say. January 2014, and Manchester United are booed off by their own fans, heaping more pressure on manager David Moyes, after losing in the third round of the FA Cup to Swansea City. Defeat was one thing, but the manner of the display – so lacking in the attacking verve associated with Moyes' predecessor – was quite another. At the same stage of the competition in 1990, a beleaguered Alex Ferguson famously – allegedly – escaped the sack from United by the finest of margins: a Mark Robins goal against Nottingham Forest gave Ferguson a reprieve. Three years later, Bryan Robson hoisted the Premier League trophy aloft, Robins’ goal paving the way for Ferguson to build the greatest dynasty English football has ever known. Robson had signed for United for a then British record fee of £1.5m in September 1981. Then, the club still held a place in the nation’s hearts in the wake of the 1958 Munich air crash, which claimed the lives of 23 pe ...

Cristiano Ronaldo, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club Real Madrid and captains the Portugal national team. He became the most expensive footballer in history when he moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009 in a transfer worth £80 million (€94 million/$131.6 million), a record that would later be reportedly broken by Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid in 2013 for £85 million (€100 million).[4] Ronaldo's contract with Real Madrid, under the terms of which he is paid €21 million per year (after taxes), makes him the highest-paid footballer in the world,[5] and his buyout clause is valued at €1 billion as per his contract.[6] Ronaldo began his career as a youth player for Andorinha, where he played for two years, before moving to C.D. Nacional. In 1997, he made a move to Portuguese giants Sporting Clube de Portugal. Ronaldo caught the attention of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who signed him for £12.24 million (€15 million) in 2003. In 2004, ...

United beat Aston Villa 3 nil this afternoon to put smile on the face of their fans for the first time since 3 weeks. Some believed that if given more time to the coach that he will better the team's performance which is badly staggering. I may not be a known authority in this game but many notable figures in the game like Andy Gray,Trevor Francis,Ruud Guilit, Alan Shearer & many more to mention have expressed their dissatisfaction with the way our team has been playing under Moyes. Many of my friends through these medium tried to remind me that the same thing has happened to Chelsea & Arsenal. Transition - that's what it is called. Please friends I don't mean to disagree with you guys but in these subject I've to. Comparing United with any other EPL team except Liverpool is unfair & disrespectful. I don't actually believe that Man U as a team has to share the same fate with some club who came into limelight in late 90's & mid 2000. "You know, paying this much for one player...its not.its not even a gamble you know... .because he's...er...he's pure gold" Ron Atkinson on signing future Manchester United and England captain Bryan Robson. Old Trafford Manchester. 1981.

You lot are so uninformed its unbelievable. I bet half of you dont even know who managed the club before Fergie came in. It was Ron Atkinson, oh wait but you guys only know about Sir Matt and Sir Alex. United won the FA Cup in 1983 and 1985, and the year before Fergie took charge United were on course to win the league but ended up finishing 4th after a slump in the last 5 games of the season. The following season United started the campaign poorly and Atkinson was dismissed. Thats when Fergie came in, he inherited a very good squad including Mark Hughes and Bryan Robson. Make no mistake, this side was one of the best in England but Fergie almost got them relegated, he took some time, 3 years to find his best side and from then on we all know what happened. He needed time and many were fed up with his promises, but eventually he delivered. By CRAIG HOPE Tom Cleverley - central midfielder of Manchester United and England. Now that is an illustrious insignia. It is one previously worn by the likes of Duncan Edwards, Bryan Robson and, most recently, Paul Scholes. Comparison to that trio, however, does not extend far beyond position, club and country. For Cleverley remains a hope, a theory, a player whose style masks his substance. Aesthetically pleasing? Yes. Statistically proven? No. The 24-year-old has just two league goals for United. Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, some 16 months his junior, has eight this season alone. On Sunday, in the 2-2 draw at Spurs, the academy graduate was more spectator than spectacular, and that, too, was the case at Cardiff seven days previous. Over-ran and under-performing, Cleverley is failing to exert an influence expected of those who reside at the heart of United’s midfield. Too many passes are either tickled sideways or, when attempting to probe in areas of promise, slow or sloppy in their execution. Michael C ...
Bryan Robson feels a famous fixture on foreign soil was his finest game in a long and glorious career with Manchester United. Speaking to ManUtd.com recently, Robbo picked out Rotterdam in 1991 - the night when the Reds beat Catalan giants Barcelona - as his peak performance. And after a typically combative and creative display, the captain lifted the Cup Winners' Cup, the club's first European trophy since Sir Matt Busby's men won the European Cup in 1968. "Everyone seems to say that my best United game was against Barcelona at Old Trafford in 1984, but I disagree," Robbo told us. "Owing to the occasion and what it meant to the club, I would say my best display was the Rotterdam final." Robson, who is currently climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation, proved to be a thorn in Barcelona's side all evening and it was his two probing passes that led to Mark Hughes' crucial brace. "Fortunately I managed to help set-up both of Sparky's goals, even though Brucey [Steve Bru ...
Robbo salutes supporters Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has been reflecting on his long and happy relationship with the club's supporters, a relationship that has spanned more than three decades. The fans at Old Trafford took to the inspirational midfielder as soon as he arrived from West Bromwich Albion in 1981, and the feelings of admiration are mutual. Even though he has developed associations elsewhere since leaving United as a player in 1994, the former Reds skipper says the pull of the place explains why he's now back working for the club as a global ambassador. "I had a great time here as a player and enjoyed real success on the pitch," Robson declared to ManUtd.com, ahead of his Kilimanjaro Challenge. "Manchester itself has always been a great city for me and my family too. I hear of players who, if they’re not having a good time on the pitch, get criticised on the street and maybe in restaurants and bars in their home towns. But United fans have always been different class with me so I ...

You need players who are worthy of wearing the Manchester United shirt not the likes of: Anderson, Nani,Young, Welbeck, Cleverley, Valencia and Kagawa!!! Get rid and get buying in January!
Ok now I speak as a United fan..first to all my fellow United fans it must have been painful to watch..not just because we lost, but we forgot how to play the ''United way''. To those who say ''give time to Moyes"..let me tell you this as I have been supporting UNITED SINCE 1981...when Ferguson took over United were in A shambles just another team in the old first divison, Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins and Frank Stapleton gave us something to shout about, that was it. When Alex Ferguson came to United in 1986 he needed time as United were nothing and do not forget Ferguson was a champion in Scotland and Europe with Aberdeen winning the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup beating the great Real Madrid 2-1..I watched that match. So He had 6 years to get the whole system right at United. Moyes on the other hand is inheriting a super team and super system of Manchester United the champions..should we expect 6 years? BRYAN ROBSON: Why Moyes is too wise to let Mourinho's mind games hamper United's progress Bryan Robson expects Jose Mourinho to make next season the most exciting Premier League race in years and has advised Wayne Rooney to stay and help Manchester United defend their title. Former United and England captain Robson took time out from Sunday's Red Heart United legends match between Manchester United and Real Madrid to talk exclusively to. And he was quick to welcome the Special One's return to these shores. He joked: 'Mourinho returns to Chelsea! Well there's a shock! 'It will make next season really interesting,' said Robson. 'With David Moyes coming in at United, Manuel Pellegrini likely taking over at City, it will make it the most exciting and intriguing title race in years. 'Wherever he goes, Mourinho stamps his authority on a club and usually brings success. He'll add quality to an already strong squad with a couple of big early signings. Like what the Premier League next season? The presence of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea and new boss David Moyes so Manchester United, will also see exciting competition. Appointment of the man from Portugal had long smelled because the British media has been widely proclaimed, even long before the appointment was inaugurated. "It will make next season more interesting," said the former player and United captain, Bryan Robson, told the Daily Mail. Mourinho is not new to Chelsea, he has coached the Blues and contributed two Premier League trophy for the west London club. While Moyes is really a new face for the Red Devils. Other top teams, Manchester City, will also be dealt a new manager next season. Not yet known who will be the new manager of the Citizens, but strong rumors with Manuel Pellegrini was his calling. Robson was convinced Mourinho will play the competition interesting with the new manager at two clubs. "He was a coach of top class an ...

Manchester United 2003–2006 Ronaldo playing against Chelsea in April 2006. Ronaldo became Manchester United's first-ever Portuguese player when he signed for €15 million[25] (£12.24 million) after the 2002–03 season.[26] He requested the number 28 (his number at Sporting), as he did not want the pressure of living up to the expectation linked to the number 7 shirt, which had previously been worn by players such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham. "After I joined, the manager asked me what number I'd like. I said 28. But Ferguson said 'No, you're going to have No. 7,' and the famous shirt was an extra source of motivation. I was forced to live up to such an honour."[27] Ronaldo made his team debut as a 60th-minute substitute in a 4–0 home victory over Bolton Wanderers. He scored his first goal for Manchester United with a free kick in a 3–0 win over Portsmouth on 1 November 2003. Ronaldo ended his first season in English football by scoring the opening goal in United's ...
Why Carrick is So Important to United . A philosopher once said: "The hardest thing is to play football in a simple way." He was right, but there are those who have mastered their roles, to the point they become invaluable. One example is Sergio Busquets at Barcelona. Another is Michael Carrick of Manchester United. Just the mere mention of his name starts a debate. He's either under-rated or over-rated. In truth, Carrick is somewhere in between. The problem is Carrick is judged on what he's not expected to do. The most common accusation is his lack of goals, but what those critics fail to acknowledge is perhaps he's following his manager's instructions. In front of him are the goalscorers and so far this season it hasn't been much of a problem. "He brings a lovely sort of balance to more attacking players," says Bryan Robson. "He allows them to go on and get on with attacking, while he takes care of everything else." It's naive to think, in periods Manchester United camped in the opposition half, he's no ...
RELEGATION, PROMOTION AND REVIVAL At the start of the 1973/74 season, Denis Law left for Manchester City on a free transfer. George Best came out of retirement and signed for the team again. As the season neared its end United needed to win two games and for Birmingham to lose in order to stay in the First Division. Birmingham won their game and Denis Law, playing for City against United, sealed United's fate with the only goal of the game. Manchester United was relegated to the Second Division for the first time since 1937. Denis Law never celebrated that goal and would later retire from football. By the time the season was over, George Best had finally walked out of United for good, although he did not actually leave the club until the following season when he was finally given a free transfer and signed for Stockport County. High attendances at Old Trafford during the 1974/75 season would see United beck to the top flight as champions for the 1975/76 season. They would later be losing finalists to Sout ...
Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has told Phil Jones to choose his battles wisely, or risk a career blighted by injury...
Phil Jones is doubtful for Manchester United's Champions League decider against Real Madrid in a couple of weeks. The 21-year-old hurt an ankle during Monday's FA Cup victory over Reading and has already been ruled out of this weekend's Premier League game at Queens Park Rangers, along with Wayne Rooney who has a sinus problem.Manager Sir Alex Ferguson says the defender *** midfielder is undergoing intense treatment but accepts he may not be ready for the second leg with Real at Old Trafford on March 5.The last-16 tie is finely-balanced at 1-1 and Ferguson said: "We are working very hard. He has an outside chance for Madrid - but no more than that. "He is a young man who went into a tackle too brave and was unbalanced. "He certainly won't be fit for this weekend. As for Real, we will have to wait and see. It is two weeks away and a lot can happen in that time." United duo to miss QPR trip The United boss admits Jones - used in attempt to shackle Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg - is currently an importan ...
Sir Alex gives Jones update Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled Phil Jones out of Saturday’s clash with QPR but claims the Manchester United defender has “an outside chance” of facing Real Madrid next month. The England international limped out of Monday’s 2-1 win over Reading with an ankle injury, prompting fears that he might not be able to face the Spanish champions after performing so admirably at the Bernabeu during last week's UEFA Champions League second round tie. Speaking during his weekly press conference at Carrington, the boss was cautiously optimistic about Jones – who celebrates his 21st birthday today – but also declared the rest of his squad fit to face Harry Redknapp’s men at Loftus Road in the Barclays Premier League. “Phil Jones is the one we are really concerned about in terms of the Real Madrid game,” Sir Alex told reporters. “We're working *** it and I'd say he has an outside chance – no more than that. He won't be fit for the weekend. "He tackled awkwardly. He tack ...
It is rare these days to find players that match the unprecedented devotion of Manchester United legends Bryan Robson and Roy Keane. Their desire to succeed was extraordinary, captaining their respective teams to many years of unrivalled success and achievement. Both enjoyed twelve year stints at Old Trafford, winning no less than 19 major trophies between them. So which of these two midfield generals can be considered the greatest?

On the 55th Anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, we (and I'm sure even the most loyal of Liverpool fans feel the same) remember the loss of some great young Manchester United and England players, including Roger Byrne, David Pegg and Tommy Taylor, who perished on this day back in 1958. But no one more so than Dudley born Wolves fan Duncan Edwards. If there was one player I wish I was old enough to have seen play 'live' it was him. By the time he died at 21, as a result of the disaster, he'd already played for United 177 times, won 2 League Championships, 3 FA Youth Cup's, an FA Cup runners-up medal, 18 England Caps, become the youngest player to appear in the 'old' First-Division and the youngest England International of the 20th century. Bobby Charlton was once asked to describe how good he was, he replied "He was the only player who made me feel inferior. Duncan was without doubt the greatest player to come out of this country. He was colossal and I wouldn't use that word to describe anyone else. He ...

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Phil Jones's participation in the England Under-21 team at this summer's European Championship is not guaranteed as Manchester United continue to monitor his return from injury. Earlier this week Roy Hodgson, the England manager, said Jones should be part of a strong squad for Stuart Pearce, the Under-21s' head coach. Ferguson, however, did not sound so sure. "We'll have to wait and see how things are," he said. "The boy's had an injury this season, which has needed looking after. We'll see what it's like in the summer." Jones missed the start of the season because of a back problem before suffering a more serious knee injury that meant he did not play his first game of the campaign until 20 November. Jones was a member of Hodgson's senior squad at last summer's European Championship and Ferguson is bemused that he will play for Pearce's team in Tuesday's match against Sweden at Walsall. "I haven't paid much attention to it but I'm surprised he's in the Under-21s and not ...

1969–1986 Main article: History of Manchester United F.C. (1969–1986) A smiling man with dark hair wearing a white, green and blue tracksuit top over a blue shirt. He is holding a washbag under his right arm. Bryan Robson was the captain of Manchester United for 12 years, longer than any other player.[33] Following an eighth-place finish in the 1969–70 season and a poor start to the 1970–71 season, Busby was persuaded to temporarily resume managerial duties, and McGuinness returned to his position as reserve team coach. In June 1971, Frank O'Farrell was appointed as manager, but lasted less than 18 months before being replaced by Tommy Docherty in December 1972.[34] Docherty saved Manchester United from relegation that season, only to see them relegated in 1974; by that time the trio of Best, Law, and Charlton had left the club.[30] The team won promotion at the first attempt and reached the FA Cup final in 1976, but were beaten by Southampton. They reached the final again in 1977, beating Liverpo ...
