Manchester United vs Arsenal is the pick of FA Cup ties as Bradford City and Blackburn Rovers look to cause more upsets
If you are a football fan aged 20 or under, trying to imagine Manchester United going 26 years without winning the league title is not an easy task. Under Sir Alex Ferguson the men from Old Trafford were eventually a dominant force. But when Eric Cantona took the M62 from Elland Road to join Ferguson's side in 1992 the title had been an elusive mistress for an entire generation. His impact was immediate. When Cantona scored his first United goal in December 1992 the club were below Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Norwich in the table. Yes - Blackburn, Villa and Norwich.
In May, Manchester United chief executive David Gill and manager Alex Ferguson both stated that Ronaldo would stay at the club,[161] while David Beckham said: "I believe he's at the right club now, a club he should stay at".[162] However, on 5 June, Sky Sports reported that Ronaldo had expressed an interest in moving to Real Madrid if they offered him the same amount of money the team had allegedly promised him earlier in the year.[163][164] Manchester United filed a tampering complaint with FIFA on 9 June over Madrid's alleged pursuit of Ronaldo, but FIFA declined to take any action.[165][166] In July, FIFA president Sepp Blatter claimed that Ronaldo should be allowed to leave, saying: "If the player wants to play somewhere else, then a solution should be found because if he stays in a club where he does not feel comfortable to play then it's not good for the player and for the club", and described the situation as "modern slavery",[167] comments Ronaldo agreed with.[168][169] The comments annoyed United ...
Alex Ferguson and his assistant Archie Knox arrived from Aberdeen on the day of Atkinson's dismissal,[40] and guided the club to an 11th-place finish in the league.[41] Despite a second-place finish in 1987–88, the club was back in 11th place the following season.[42] Reportedly on the verge of being dismissed, victory over Crystal Palace in the 1990 FA Cup Final replay (after a 3–3 draw) saved Ferguson's career.[43][44] The following season, Manchester United claimed its first Cup Winners' Cup title and competed in the 1991 UEFA Super Cup, beating European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade 1–0 in the final at Old Trafford. A second consecutive League Cup final appearance followed in 1992, in which the team beat Nottingham Forest 1–0 at Wembley.[39] In 1993, the club won its first league title since 1967, and a year later, for the first time since 1957, it won a second consecutive title – alongside the FA Cup – to complete the first "Double" in the club's history.[39] A white football player with ...

Premier League FLASHBACK It was back in 1992 when the top division in English football broke away from the rest of the league to form the inaugural FA Carling Premier League. During that first season, the number of clubs in the new league was still 22 – just as it had been in the old First Division. But in 1995 the number was reduced to 20. Here's how the table looked almost exactly 22 years ago on 21 November 1992 (number of points shown in brackets): 1 Norwich City (33) 2 Arsenal (29) 3 Aston Villa (28) 4 Blackburn Rovers (27) 5 Queens Park Rangers (26) 6 Manchester City (25) 7 Chelsea (25) 8 Manchester United (24) 9 Coventry City (23) 10 Ipswich Town (22) 11 Middlesbrough (21) 12 Leeds United (21) 13 Liverpool (19) 14 Sheffield Wednesday (19) 15 Tottenham Hotspur (19) 16 Sheffield United (17) 17 Everton (16) 18 Southampton (15) 19 Oldham Athletic (15) 20 Wimbledon (14) 21 Crystal Palace (12) 22 Nottingham Forest (11)

Keane, who played twice for United in the League Cup in 2012-13, is known to Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from his time at Old Trafford. What does it take to win the Premier League? The Premier League is the most watched football division in the world, and is often heralded as being the most competitive too. Rising stars of the playing and managerial world flock to the Premier League to prove their ability in English football and achieve global recognition for their talents. In the 19 seasons of a 20 team Premier League, just five teams have gone on to win the title – Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. Each of these teams spent big on recruiting the Best Players available to them; each demonstrated considerable physical and mental strength throughout the campaign; and each produced moments of fantastic skill and guile to overcome their opponents. But taking an overview of the numbers from the last two decades of Premier League football, what kind of targets does a team setting out to mount a title campaign need to set if it is realistically going to stand a chance of succeeding? How many points do ...
1990-1999 The dawn of the 1990's saw Alex Ferguson collecting his first silverware as Manchester United manager, and Liverpool winning their last League Championship with an ageing team. The tide was turning… Fergie's first FA Cup, achieved after a replay against Crystal Palace, seemed at the time to be a stand-alone success, one that possibly saved his job after another poor season in the League. But nine years later, it seemed that Lee Martin's winning goal against Palace lit the fuse for an explosion of unprecedented success. First and foremost, winning the FA Cup in 1990 allowed United to make their return to European competition after an absence of five years. Far from being rusty, they went all the way to the final of the European Cup Winners Cup in Rotterdam where their opponents were Barcelona, the former club of United striker Mark Hughes. Two goals by Hughes sealed the match 2-1 in Fergie's favour in May 1991, 23 years after the club's previous triumph in Europe. The other long wait, for that ...

Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, the new owner of Valencia, has realised a long-held dream by buying a top European football club -- and will hope for better fortunes than some of his fellow Asian investors. Publicity-shy Lim, a fishmonger's son who made his wealth by investing in a palm oil company, is an avid Manchester United fan who nonetheless was linked to a bid for their arch-rivals Liverpool in 2010. On Saturday, patrons of the Valencia Foundation unanimously approved 60-year-old Lim's proposal to take a 70.4 percent stake in the debt-stricken Spanish club, which twice reached the Champions League final. Valencia's hierarchy has been looking for investors since principal creditor Bankia refused to refinance the combined 306 million euro ($530 million) debt the club and its foundation has with the bank. Lim has an estimated $2.4 billion fortune and owns a string of Manchester United-themed bars in Asia. The father of two is married to former actress Cherie Lim. DON'T LOSE YOUR PLACE. I am surprised that it only takes one season to fall from grace to grass - from Champions League to totally out of Europe, not even Europa League! First, it was Liverpool, then Chelsea, and now...the red devil, the almighty Manchester United that painted and monopolised the EPL to themselves. Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Manchester United have all had the luxury of being one of the best EPL 4 and have also crashed out, while some crashed beyond redemption to eat the dust preserved for such. Since 1996-97 season when 'Arsene who?' according to Ferguson took over, Arsenal has been established as a Top 4 club and have fought tooth and nail to ensure they remain competitive for that. They have won several laurels since then and have smashed several records that would be the envy of those clubs with endless vault of money. Then, they took a bigger step.enlarging their territory and tightening their purse even further! And since 2005, every football exp ...
So far La FC Bayern München 0 vs 0 Manchester United - In Progress — 8′ Refresh scores 6′ - MULLER! RIBERY! The cross is poor, but bobbles into the path of Muller, who sees a first-time strike blocked well. The rebound falls to Ribery, but the France international drifts a very tame effort well wide of the far post, with De Gea remaining untested thus far. 5′ - It's been a very fluid start for Bayern, with players drifting from their assigned positions, keen to receive the ball whenever possible. An early cross is whipped into a near post area, but Smalling is alive to the danger, getting in front of Mandzukic and clearing the danger behind for yet another early corner. 4′ - A clash of heads between Smalling and Muller sees both players quickly back to their feet, although the former Fulham man looks a little bit dazed. Both men continue to rub their sore heads, but they're determined to continue regardless. 3′ - Good work from Jones, as the former Blackburn Rovers defender ge ...
Manchester United have not conceded a penalty at Old Trafford in the Premier League since December 31 2011 (vs Blackburn Rovers). - Only Everton vs Liverpool (20) has seen more red cards than the Liverpool v Manchester United fixture in the Premier League (14). -Six of the last 10 goals in this fixture have been scored in the 15 minute period just after half- time. - This game should feature the three players to have been involved in the most Premier League goals (scoring & assisting) this season: Suarez 34, Sturridge 23 and Wayne Rooney 21.
Well well, we have had a nice weekend. Manchester United back with a bang and Manchester City yet again loses to Wigan Athletic. Next week we face Liverpool who does not have any match this week. So they are probably more rested and likely to be strong. But that ain't a problem. We as a whole team have improved and found a new pair in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Also, with Fellaini our mid field has improved. Juan Mata , Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie lead the attack. However, David Moyes in the recent Press Conference stated that Shinji Kagawa will be given more playing time. This is a good news to all of us. The lad gave a cameo against West Brom. Meanwhile, Michael Keane, the promising centre back is loaned for rest of the season to Blackburn Rovers.
Did you know? Roy Keane ditched Kenny Dalglish at the last moment and joined Manchester United instead of Blackburn Rovers to which Kenny became angry and said 'Nobody does this to me. Nobody does this to Kenny Dalglish'

DANIEL MONASTIR ON SATURDAY BLAME DALGLISH NOT THE OWNERS There was a time when Liverpool dominated both Europe and England-that was the time when club tradition and not financial strength determined who was the elite of the day. When ownership was almost non existent and the he most expensive player cost just 750,000 pounds. Then came along money and ownership and the story changed Manchester United without a league title since 1967-68, embarked on a mission whose catalyst was money and whose desired effect and end result was dominance. 25 years had passed without a league title for United and in the 1992-93 season, they brought in 7 new players and the most eye catching was Eric Cantona from then defending champions Leeds United-the rest is history as they began a trail of dominance that saw the power of English football shift from Merseyside to Lancashire from Melwood to Carrington and from Anfield to Old Trafford. Then came Blackburn Rovers in 1994-95, they brought in Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish . ...

Arsenal[edit source | editbeta] Alt text Ramsey at the end of the 2008–09 campaign On 10 June 2008 it was confirmed that after meeting officials from Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton, Ramsey had decided to join Arsenal, who paid Cardiff City a total of £4.8 million for the player.[17] The move was completed on 13 June 2008 on what is said to be a long-term contract. The main reason he chose Arsenal ahead of the other clubs that pursued his signature was the approach of Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, who flew him and his family to Switzerland to talk about the plans Wenger had for him and his potential future with Arsenal.[18] Wenger described Ramsey as "a player with a fantastic engine, good build, good technique and good vision".[19] Ramsey made his competitive début for Arsenal in the Champions League third qualifying round against FC Twente on 13 August 2008 and his league début a month later against Blackburn Rovers on 13 September 2008, marking it with an assist to Emmanuel Adebayor for A ...

However Bryan Shaw, chairman of Stoke City's Supporters Club, doesn't see Hughes as the ideal replacement. "From all the people available, he would not have been my first choice, although he has a reasonable record apart from at QPR," he told the BBC. "If you ask the majority of Stoke supporters, Mark Hughes would not be their first choice. That said, whoever the chairman appoints we have to get behind. We just have to hope he proves us wrong." Manchester City to face Chelsea or Manchester United in FA Cup semi- final The draw for the last four also hands Wigan, Blackburn or Millwall a chance to qualify for next season's Europa League, as well as a chance of making the Wembley final By Jay Jaffa Mar 10, 2013 6:42:00 PM Manchester City will face either Chelsea or Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Roberto Mancini's side confirmed their place in the last four with a commanding 5-0 thrashing of Barnsley on Saturday but will have to await the outcome of a replay after Chelsea came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday evening. After falling behind to first-half goals from Chicharito and Wayne Rooney, the FA Cup holders rallied, securing a replay thanks to strikes from Eden Hazard and Ramires. Manchester United will aim to vent their feelings of injustice on holders Chelsea in the FA Cup this weekend after a controversial Champions League exit against Real Madrid on Tuesday torched their hopes of a treble. Alex Ferguson's side have concentrated their firepower on bigger prizes since last lifting the FA Cup for a record 11th time in 2004 when they beat Millwall. But knocking out the club who have won the FA Cup four times in the last six seasons - including the 2007 final when Chelsea beat United in the first final at the re-built Wembley Stadium - would be some consolation. The clash at Old Trafford is the standout match of the quarterfinals which also features the all-Premier League tie between Everton and Wigan Athletic. Manchester City, the 2011 winners, face 1912 winners Barnsley of the Championship and in an all-Championship tie Millwall meet Blackburn Rovers, who knocked out Arsenal in the last round. "We've still got an FA Cup tie and we're still in a commanding position in the league. S ...

Soccer News Arsenal crash out of FA Cup Arsenal's hopes of ending their eight-year trophy drought suffered a huge setback after they were dumped out of the FA Cup at home to second-tier Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Colin Kazim-Richards scored the only goal in Rovers's 1-0 victory when he followed up in the 72nd minute, with a strike that went in off the post, after Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny failed to hold Martin Olsson's shot. Arsenal, who haven't won a major piece of silverware since lifting the FA Cup in 2005, must now raise their spirits for a last 16 Champions League first leg tie on Tuesday at home to German giants Bayern Munich. But this defeat can only add to the pressure on long-serving Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side are a massive 21 points behind Manchester United in the Premier League. Everton, the other Premier League side in FA Cup action on Saturday, were held to a 2-2 draw by giant killers Oldham after the third-tier side grabbed a dramatic equaliser in the fourth minu ...

Ince, who has managed at MK Dons and Blackburn Rovers, made it to the final three when he was interviewed along with Phil Brown and Mark Robins who was given the job.
Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Manchester United to heed the lessons from their hard-fought win over Southampton when they tackle Fulham this weekend. The Premier League leaders overcame the loss of an early goal to secure a 2-1 win on Wednesday but Mauricio Pochettino's side had enough chances to have claimed a share of the points. United face another bottom-half side in Fulham on Saturday and Ferguson warned against further complacency, despite last weekend's comfortable 4-1 victory over the same opponents at Old Trafford. "The effort Southampton put in on Wednesday is a reminder to us that you get three points for every game, not just for beating teams at the top of the league," he said. "We've had great examples of that over the years. Last year we lost to Blackburn Rovers at home. You could quite easily say that cost us the league. "I don't expect my players to be complacent, but Wednesday is obviously a great reminder. "Fulham's home record is very good and has been for a few years. "Hopefully we get t ...

Lampard started the 2009–10 season by scoring against Manchester United, in the 2009 Community Shield, in the 72nd minute. The match ended 2–2, and Lampard scored in its penalty shootout which they won 4–1. He scored his 133rd goal for Chelsea in a Champions League match against Atlético Madrid on 21 October 2009, which moved him up to 5th among the club's all time goalscorers. He had been struggling to score the amount of goals he had in the past seasons however this soon changed as he scored two goals in the 5–0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers on 24 October 2009. On 30 October, he was nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year Award for the sixth straight year.[55] He then scored a penalty against Bolton as Chelsea ran out 4–0 winners on Halloween. We decided there were 2 choices for No.1 So at Number 1: Ryan Giggs and Alan Shearer Ryan Giggs: In any era Ryan Giggs would stand out as an extraordinary talent – but to perform at the top level for so long in the modern-day game is truly stunning. The only footballer to play in all 20 seasons of the Premier League (he has scored in each), the Welshman is the most decorated player in the English game and still plays a vital role for Manchester United, more than 21 years since his professional debut. Alan Shearer: Simply the greatest scorer in Premier League history by a distance, Alan Shearer averaged more than a goal every other match during his hugely impressive career. His 34 goals in 1994-95 were a key factor as Blackburn Rovers won the title while his subsequent move to Newcastle United saw him quickly establish himself as an icon on Tyneside. Deadly with either foot and with his head, Shearer was a classic centre-forward – and pretty much unstoppable.

Manchester United review of 2012 Manchester United might not have won anything in 2012, but there is a definite sense that the mighty Reds are on the rise again. After missing out in the most agonising fashion on the Premier League in May - against goal difference to City - United reacted quickly. They landed the major prize of the summer transfer window in Robin Van Persie and he has proved cracking value at £24m. United are top of the table at Christmas and into the Champions League knock-out phase - where Real Madrid await - so all bodes well for a successful 2013. In the meantime, MEN Sport would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous 2013! January 2011 ended badly with an unfathomable defeat to Steve Kean's Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford. And 2012 started equally as miserably with a thrashing on the banks of the Tyne against Newcastle United. Then Sir Alex Ferguson pulled an ace from the pack ahead of an FA Cup victory over City at the Etihad. In the build up to the game an ann ...
Championship club Blackburn Rovers are close to signing Joshua King from Manchester United. The striker would move to Ewood Park on loan for now, only for the deal to be made permanent come January. The 20 year old, who was signed by United in 2008 after his stint in Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s soccer school, has found first team opportunities hard to come by at Old Trafford and made only his second appearance for the club against Galatasaray on Tuesday. In between he has spent time on loan to Preston North End, Borussia Monchengladbach and Hull City. With a number of top quality strikers in his ranks along with a few promising young ones, it is perhaps no surprise that Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to part ways with the young Norwegian. His impressive performances this season with the national team have caught the attention of clubs in England and the new Blackburn manager Henin Berg has wasted no time in going back to his former club for the signature of a forward, who he would hope aid his team’s push fo ...
The Taylor Report's requirement for an all-seater stadium lowered capacity at Old Trafford to around 44,000 by 1993. In 1995, the North Stand was redeveloped into three tiers, restoring capacity to approximately 55,000. At the end of the 1998–99 season, second tiers were added to the East and West Stands, raising capacity to around 67,000, and between July 2005 and May 2006, 8,000 more seats were added via second tiers in the north-west and north-east quadrants. Part of the new seating was used for the first time on 26 March 2006, when an attendance of 69,070 became a new Premier League record.[75] The record was pushed steadily upwards before reaching its peak on 31 March 2007, when 76,098 spectators saw Manchester United beat Blackburn Rovers 4–1, with just 114 seats (0.15 percent of the total capacity of 76,212) unoccupied.[76] In 2009, reorganisation of the seating resulted in a reduction of capacity by 255 to 75,957.[77][78] Manchester United has the third highest average attendance of European f ...

Born in Whiston, Merseyside,[1] Gerrard started out playing for hometown team Whiston Juniors, where he was noticed by Liverpool scouts. He later joined the Liverpool Academy at the age of nine.[9] Gerrard then had trials with various clubs at fourteen, but his success wasn't immediate — Gerrard never made it into the England schoolboys' team. No West Ham chance for John Mensah 25 September, 2012 Black Stars Captain John Mensah will not be offered a contract by West Ham after an unsuccessful trial at Upton Park. The 29-year-old together with ex-Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre and Anthony Vanden Borre, all free agents, were offered the chance to impress Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. Allardyce said: “We have had one or two trialists in but none of them have been offered a contract because I think that I already have enough quality within my squad. “I don’t want to take a player for the sake of it, even though we had some very good players come in on trial. “My decision was to not offer them anything and I am happy with the squad I have now and hopefully it will continue to ...

Blackburn Rovers are keen on taking Manchester United pair Will and Michael Keane on loan next season.
Right now any article suggesting Manchester United are better than Manchester City in any way is going to look like clutching at straws. But a week is a long time in football. When United had an eight-point lead, most pundits agreed they had the title sown up. Now, we're reading articles about City dominating for a decade or more. But that's Goal.com for you... Forty-four years of failure can't be wiped away in one season, but the hurt has been relieved. By the same token, United have been here before, and they've knocked Liverpool off their perch and recovered from the surges of Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal and Chelsea. Why shouldn't it be the same with City? Remember, United came second with the highest points total ever. One mistake against Vincent Kompany (who, by the way, has been outstanding) or a seven-minute collapse against Everton was all the difference. Rome Wasn't Built in a Day Roberto Mancini was a fine player with 733 appearances for Bologna, Sampdoria and Lazio. He is also a fin ...

In-form Van Persie aims for landmark goal Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie could book his place in the history books against West Bromwich Albion if he continues his prolific form this weekend. FA Cups. As of 2012, the record for the most wins is held by Manchester United with eleven victories, followed by Arsenal with ten and Tottenham Hotspur with eight. The cup has been won by the same team in two or more consecutive years on eight occasions, and three teams have won consecutive finals more than once: Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur. The cup is held by Chelsea, who defeated Liverpool in the 2012 final.
Only three players have won the Premier League with different teams: Henning Berg (Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United), Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole (both with Arsenal and Chelsea). If City win the title, three others will join the list: Gael Clichy, Kolo Toure and Carlos Tevez. Tevez would become the first to win it with both Manchester clubs.

Manchester United moved five poinst clear at the top of the Premier League after beating Blackburn Rovers 2-0 with dramatic late goals from Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young. The Old Trafford club dominated for long periods of the game, but had to wait until the last 10 minutes to score as Valencia hit a ferocious effort into the far corner from the wing, while Young hit another good effort on the spin with five minutes remaining.
