If you are a football fan aged 20 or under, trying to imagine Manchester United going 26 years without winning the league title is not an easy task. Under Sir Alex Ferguson the men from Old Trafford were eventually a dominant force. But when Eric Cantona took the M62 from Elland Road to join Ferguson's side in 1992 the title had been an elusive mistress for an entire generation. His impact was immediate. When Cantona scored his first United goal in December 1992 the club were below Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Norwich in the table. Yes - Blackburn, Villa and Norwich.

On this day... Henrik Larsson. The Swede made his Reds debut on this day in 2007 and even scored in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. In total, Larsson made 13 appearances throughout his temporary stay at United and scored three goals - including this one against Lille in the UEFA Champions League. His short stay at Old Trafford undoubtedly helped the Reds win the 2006/07 title and he remains a popular figure among fans. Larsson on United in 2010 "If there is one regret I have from my career, it is that I came home to Sweden when Mr Ferguson was trying to get me to stay at Manchester United. I should have stayed at United for longer because I had a great time there and everyone at the club was very keen to keep me. My time there was too short. The whole experience was fantastic and, although I was 35 at the time, I still felt that I had some good football in me." Sir Alex on Larsson “In his last game in our colours at Middlesbrough we were winning 2-1 and Henrik went back to play in midfield and ran his balls ...
«». Falcao enjoying life at United Life is good for Radamel Falcao at Manchester United. The superstar striker, signed on loan from Monaco on deadline day last summer, has had a busy time of things recently but seems at home in the no.9 shirt. The Colombian has started all of United's last five games and scored point-saving equalisers at both Aston Villa and Stoke City. He has also had his first taste of the FA Cup, in unfamiliar surroundings at Yeovil Town, and appears to be reaching peak fitness. With United on an 11-match unbeaten run and Falcao making his mark, it is little wonder he is feeling content. "I'm good," he told ManUtd.com. "My family are comfortable. We're enjoying life in Manchester and here at the club. The people have been great with me, with my family. We're happy and very grateful." If any evidence of the respect he engenders among his team-mates was required, our video of the players lifting him back into full training in November provided it in abundance. Phil Jones feels only fine margins stand between Manchester United and an elusive third away win of the 2014/15 season. The New Year's Day trip to Stoke City resulted in a third successive draw on the road for the Reds, who were previously held 1-1 at Aston Villa and 0-0 at Tottenham during the congested Christmas schedule. United manager Louis Van Gaal had pointed out in his pre-match press conference that his team have only beaten Arsenal and Southampton away in the campaign to date. Reflecting on why Stoke's name was not added to that list, Jones told ManUtd.com: "We played well in parts but probably didn't create as many chances as we would have liked. I think the draw's a fair result in the end." When asked what might be needed to turn potentially costly away draws into valuable victories, Jones suggested: "I think it's maybe just the final pass, the final ball. But we'll evaluate everything we've done at Stoke and we'll try to improve." The 1-1 draw with Mark Hughes' side represents an improvement o ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has revealed the reason for Angel Di Maria missing the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle. The Argentina international had only returned to action last weekend in the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa after spending a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. However, Di Maria was surprisingly absent from the matchday squad for the visit of Alan Pardew's Magpies on Friday, as the Red Devils ran out 3-1 victors led by inspirational skipper Wayne Rooney. Van Gaal explained after the game that the club's record signing had pulled up in training on Christmas Eve, which resulted in his omission at Old Trafford. The Dutchman toldMUTV: "In the last training session, he [Di Maria] stepped out of the warming up. "It was a little bit amazing because he did everything very well, but he stepped out and now we have to wait and see for the analysis." Van Gaal also provided updates on Adnan Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, with the injured quartet in line to r ...

Manchester United beat Newcastle United at Old Trafford thanks to two goals from Wayne Rooney and one from Robin Van Persie. Robin Van Persie of Manchester United celebrates Louis Van Gaal's philosophy is still to fully take shape at Old Trafford – but on a day when United scored three and might have had at least as many more, it is clear to see the Dutchman's message is beginning to get across. They certainly responded to the ticking off dished out by their manager following the disappointing draw at Aston Villa a week ago – producing one of their best attacking performances of the season. Driving forward in numbers to overwhelm Newcastle, this could have been a Boxing Day rout. Instead it was a hugely satisfying performance for Van Gaal – and something to offer encouragement to the 75,000 who turned up for the final home game of 2014. It has been a turbulent 12 months in these parts – but the sight of Wayne Rooney in full flight, scoring twice, Juan Mata, Radamel Falcao and Robin Van Persie pier ...
Louis Van Gaal has assembled a four- pronged strikeforce who are well suited to one another, and the team. Each similar in style yet also subtly distinct, the Manchester United manager can feel confident pairing any combination during the second half of the season. He may have missed much of the campaign, but Radamel Falcao has proven he is at a similar level to Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. Hardworking, sharp and extremely accurate in front of goal, the Colombian has surprised many with his ability to hold the ball, link play and lay on chances for team-mates, too. Minute for minute, statistically he has been United's most creative striker. Falcao's brilliant, instinctive header against Aston Villa this month was a trademark effort. There are few strikers in the world more clinical with one-touch finishes from close range. The other new face, James Wilson, 19, adds the enthusiasm of youth. Boasting a terrific work ethic he will consistently pressurise defenders, drift into wide areas, and counter-at ...

The Former Manchester United manager was full of praise for the England international, while he urged fans to "watch United go" when Louis Van Gaal's stars return from injury Alex Ferguson believes Michael Carrick is the best midfielder in the Premier League and is convinced Manchester United will keep getting better as their injured stars return. Carrick saw his start to the season hampered by injuries, but he has returned to the first team and helped the Red Devils win six of their last seven games, with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa the only blot on their copybook. The 33-year-old has also been named as vice-captain to Wayne Rooney, underlining his importance to Louis Van Gaal, and Ferguson is convinced he is the most effective midfielder in England. "I think Michael's the best central midfielder in English football," the legendary Former United manager told BT Sport. "I think he's the best English player in the game." Reports: Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini recovers from illness for Newcastle clash. Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has recovered from his illness and will face Newcastle United on Boxing Day, according to reports in the Manchester Evening News. Fellaini missed a United game for the first time in two months on Saturday, after the Belgian stayed at home for the clash with Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa side in the Midlands. The colossal midfielders presence was missed as Louis Van Gaal’s troops failed to make it seven wins from seven, after Radamel Falcao had cancelled out Christian Benteke’s wonderful opener. Fellaini has become a crucial player this season for the Red Devils after starring in the club’s brilliant run of form and the home faithful will be delighted to have him back for the festive period, after he watched on from the sidelines with illness. Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal frustrated by dropping points at Aston Villa
Christian Benteke scored a goal and was generally strong as Aston Villa picked up a point against visiting Manchester United.
Van Gaal: We needed more aggression Louis Van Gaal was disappointed that Manchester United could not convert possession into three points at Villa Park and said his team needed more aggression to beat a determined Aston Villa side, who remained just as resolute when they went down to ten men in the second half. “When you are the better team you have to win,” the boss told MUTV. “We have had a lack of aggression in the first half, I think at that time we were much better. We kept the ball very well but didn’t do too much with it. We didn’t create many chances in the first half. “Because of the lack of aggression we were losing 1-0 and then we changed that attitude in the second half. We did everything to win but it is very difficult. I have to say that Aston Villa did very well also.” Christian Benteke gave the hosts the lead after 18 minutes but, as Van Gaal pointed out, it was against the run of play. A change at half time saw Michael Carrick shift from a three-man defence into central midf ...

Radamel Falcao made his fourth league start for Manchester United and scored his second goal Falcao header cancels out Benteke goal Man Utd prevented seven straight wins Agbonlahor sent off in second half United third, seven points off top Ten-man Aston Villa ended Manchester United's six-game winning run with a hard- earned draw at Villa Park. United dominated possession but fell behind to Christian Benteke's superb left- foot strike before Radamel Falcao headed them level after the break. Gabriel Agbonlahor was dismissed for a heavy tackle on Ashley Young, prompting United pressure and Michael Carrick's header was cleared off the line. They could not force a winner and sit seven points behind leaders Chelsea. The Blues could extend that lead if they win their game in hand at Stoke on Monday and United will look back at a timid first-half display as costly. Manager Louis Van Gaal asked his side to be better with ball before kick-off and they obliged with 76% of possession in the opening half an hour. But ...
Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw by the 10 men of Aston Villa in a keenly-contested game at Villa Park this afternoon. The result has brought an end to a six-game winning streak for Louis Van Gaal's side, but they remain in the top three of the Premier League. Man Utd saw much of the ball in the opening 15 minutes but couldn't create any chances with their superior possession. Their lack of creativity came back to haunt them in the 18th minute as Christian Benteke bent a measured shot inside the far post from inside the box after Jonny Evans was unable to deal with a deep free kick. United were soon on the front foot again as they penned the hosts inside their own half, but a wall of claret and blue shirts prevented them from carving open any opportunities. After a Villa counter attack broke down, Man Utd almost got a goal back as Ashley Young's inswinging cross evaded everyone inside the box, but Brad Guzan clawed it away just as it looked to be creeping inside the far post. Radamel Falcao ...

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...
Aston Villa v Manchester United What is your final score prediction ? Who will be the Man of the Match ?
Whether in the Premier League or FA Cup, Aston Villa's home has been the scene of great triumphs for Manchester United down the years, writes Andy Mitten.
ASTON VILLA v Manchester UnITED (Kick Off 3:00 p.m UK + 2 hr S.A. + 1 hr Nigeria) Aston Villa are missing eight players, with Alan Hutton and Kieran Richardson suspended and the ineligible Tom Cleverley concurrently serving a ban. Fit-again Fabian Delph will make his first start for 11 weeks, while Ron Vlaar could also return to the side. Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria could be involved after a hamstring injury but Marouane Fellaini has been ruled out because of illness. Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind are still injured. MATCH PREVIEW It might be the most wonderful time of the year, but it's probably not the best time for Aston Villa to be facing Manchester United. Not only are United the Premier League's form team - at least in terms of results - with six straight wins behind them, but it's also more or less a case of 'Hobson's choice' for the team Paul Lambert can pick to play them. Already without Ashley Westwood and Joe Cole through injury, Villa will also be missin ...
Louis Van Gaal has confirmed Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo will not feature in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League encounter with Aston Villa.
The last round of fixtures before Christmas is up this weekend, with ten games stretched over four days. Here's The Report from Left Back's Match Day 17 tips: Manchester City 2-0 Crystal Palace: As City close in on title rivals Chelsea, there can only be one winner in this fixture. Injuries across the forward line will be problematic for Manuel Pellegrini, but he has a midfield that is well suited to scoring goals as well as creating them. Even though a full-strength City side won't take to the pitch over the weekend, they will win comfortably. Aston Villa 1-3 Manchester United: How do you stop a United side currently sitting on six straight victories? Prayer and firearms come to mind, although Aston Villa won't be able to use either. They might sneak in a cheeky goal, but will be thoroughly dominated by United in this match. Hull 0-1 Swansea: Hull need some magic. If they're in the relegation zone over Christmas, history suggests they'll be there in May. The Tigers will take heart from knowing that Swans ...

Manchester United could now have a strong chance of signing Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman in January due to the Serie A club's early elimination from the Champions League, Old Trafford sources have told ESPN. Strootman's season only began last month following his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in March, and Roma's failure to progress from their group in Europe has led United to believe they have significant leverage to do an earlier deal for the 24-year-old. United's interest in the Netherlands international is long-standing and has only increased following the arrival of his former national coach, Louis Van Gaal, at the Premier League club in the summer. The knee injury Strootman picked up not only ruled him out of the World Cup but also prevented any immediate possibility of a transfer following Van Gaal's appointment, although it had been anticipated at Old Trafford that a deal would eventually take place at the end of the 2014-15 campaign. There had been extensive preliminary ...

10 questions for the weekend With yet another huge weekend of Premier League football ahead of us, we ponder 10 questions that will be answered by Monday evening ... Can the Saints get back to winning ways at Turf Moor? Southampton were absolutely flying when they travelled to struggling Aston Villa for a Monday Night Football clash last month, only for the south coast club’s form to have dipped alarmingly since then. And while the Saints have had to face the likes of Premier League champions Manchester City, FA Cup winners Arsenal, and high-flying Manchester United in that time, head coach Ronald Koeman will be desperate for his side to get back to winning ways, and quickly, starting with Saturday’s trip to take on relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor. However, the Dutchman will not be fretting just yet given how well Southampton played on Monday evening in their 2-1 home loss to United at St Mary’s. Will Diego Costa end his goalscoring drought against the Tigers? When Diego Costa opened the ...

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa man Stan Collymore believes Manchester United are genuine contenders for the Premier League title, insisting their absence in European competitions is a huge advantage to the club. The Red Devils have won their last five league games and are currently in third place in the league table, after beating Southampton at St.Marys on Monday night. Manchester United’s winning streak has boosted confidence, says Juan Mata Louis Van Gaal’s side have recovered from their slow start this season and seem like they are a threat going into the crucial clash against rivals Liverpool on Sunday. Collymore believes Manchester City and Chelsea will be looking behind their backs in the next few weeks, with the Red Devils back in full force under Van Gaal. Collymore told Bleacher Report: “Manchester United are in the best position out of all the top clubs in the Premier League. They don’t have the distraction of the Champions League, have won five on the spin and will add at least one c ...

ASTON VILLA v LEICESTER (Kick-Off 4:00 p.m. UK / 5:00 Nigeria) Aston Villa forward Andreas Weimann will serve a one-match ban on Sunday for accumulating five bookings. Joe Cole is out with a hamstring strain, while Philippe Senderos, Ron Vlaar and Nathan Baker remain injured. Leicester captain Wes Morgan is banned after a midweek red card so Liam Moore is likely to deputise in defence. David Nugent is a doubt with illness which has also affected others in the squad but Dean Hammond could return from a calf injury. MATCH PREVIEW Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la! Villa and Leicester fans aren't exactly dancing under the holly. At Palace in the week, Paul Lambert finally got a first win since signing his new contract in September. His team is unbeaten in four games, which offers a little encouragement. Christian Benteke has his first goal since March. They beat Leicester in both of their previous Premier League clashes. But that's about as far as early festive cheer can stretch. Seven ...
Manchester United made it four straight Premier League wins with a 2-1 victory over Stoke City. United were missing the injured Wayne Rooney, who was hurt in a collision with an advertising hoarding against Hull on Saturday. But they took the lead on 21 when Ander Herrera’s cross was met by Marouane Fellaini’s header. Stoke levelled on 39 - Bojan Krkic’s run into the box was halted, the ball rolled back to Steven N’Zonzi who powered in a shot from the edge of the box. United took the lead on 59 – Juan Mata whipped in a free-kick, no-one got a touch and the ball flew straight past Asmir Begovic. In a dramatic finale, David De Gea made a stunning save to deny Mame Biram Diouf and then Ashley Young came to United's rescue with a sensational goal-line clearance in the fourth minute of stoppage time. After all the questions about Steven Gerrard’s future, Liverpool’s skipper played a pivotal role in their 3-1 win at 10-man Leicester. The hosts took the lead through Simon Mignolet’s unfortunate o ...
Manchester United maintained their recent improvement with a fourth successive league win, beating Stoke City 2-1 at Old Trafford with a Marouane Fellaini header and Juan Mata free kick either side of a Steven Nzonzi goal for Stoke. David De Gea guaranteed United held on to the points with two superb saves late in the game. United stay fourth but have 25 points, eight behind leaders Chelsea who host Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, while Liverpool have climbed to eighth place with 20 points. West Ham United remain fifth, a point behind United, after a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion, who have now lost their last four matches. James Tomkins headed the winner for the Hammers in first half stoppage time. Liverpool captain Gerrard, 34, left out of the starting line-up on Saturday, was back in the team at Leicester where he rifled home a poor clearance from captain Wes Morgan to turn the balance of the match the Merseysiders' way in the 54th minute. They had fallen behind when Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet co ...
ARSENAL READY TO OUTBID Man Utd FOR VILLA DEFENDER VLAAR Arsenal are ready to outbid Manchester United for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar. The Daily Express says the Gunners have already prepared an inviting £8million offer and a considerable improvement to his £25,000 per-week wages. Arsenal are clearly in need of defensive additions in January, and as a ready made Premier League centre-half, Vlaar would clearly fit the bill. Villa boss Paul Lambert has reiterated his desire to retain his coveted star, but talk over a new deal has yet to yield any results. The news will concern United boss Louis Van Gaal who had expected to secure a deal for his 29-year-old compatriot.

The glorious days of Southampton are gradually winding up. If they could not beat Aston Villa, I wonder what they will do with the 3 strong matches waiting for them consecutively: Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. They are yet to play with the seeming invincible Chelsea. Even the sinking Liverpool has not yet played with them. The most serious club they have played this season is Tottenham and they lost. If they survive 2 of their next 3 matches then they are up to something. If not, the epl table will take the shape it's used to. The club has been fantastic this season. But I don't see them among the first 4 at the end of December. God help them.

Premier League FLASHBACK It was back in 1992 when the top division in English football broke away from the rest of the league to form the inaugural FA Carling Premier League. During that first season, the number of clubs in the new league was still 22 – just as it had been in the old First Division. But in 1995 the number was reduced to 20. Here's how the table looked almost exactly 22 years ago on 21 November 1992 (number of points shown in brackets): 1 Norwich City (33) 2 Arsenal (29) 3 Aston Villa (28) 4 Blackburn Rovers (27) 5 Queens Park Rangers (26) 6 Manchester City (25) 7 Chelsea (25) 8 Manchester United (24) 9 Coventry City (23) 10 Ipswich Town (22) 11 Middlesbrough (21) 12 Leeds United (21) 13 Liverpool (19) 14 Sheffield Wednesday (19) 15 Tottenham Hotspur (19) 16 Sheffield United (17) 17 Everton (16) 18 Southampton (15) 19 Oldham Athletic (15) 20 Wimbledon (14) 21 Crystal Palace (12) 22 Nottingham Forest (11)

Former Manchester United boss David Moyes has been announced as the new boss of La Liga outfit Real Sociedad. Moyes’ reputation as a manager suffered immensely during a difficult 10-month tenure at Old Trafford, where he was sacked in April. Having formerly built a name for himself at Everton, Moyes gets an unexpected chance at redemption in Spain . The Scottish coach has signed a one-and-a-half year deal with Sociedad, who finished seventh in the Spanish top flight last season. Moyes lasted just 51 games at Manchester United, winning just 27 times as the defending champions failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. His time in Manchester was characterized by vitriolic campaigns against him personally by sections of the United fan-base and intense scrutiny and criticism of his leadership. In March, a plane was infamously flown over Old Trafford with the message “Wrong One – Moyes Out” during a league match with Aston Villa.

Louis Van Gaal must sell Manchester United stars in 2015. Javier Hernandez has dropped a big hint this week that he plans to leave Manchester United at the end of the season in order to sign a permanent deal with Real Madrid. But he’s not the only star name likely to leave Old Trafford in 2015. The coach still has some serious deadwood to shift from his squad. 1. Chris Smalling has failed to develop in the manner most at Manchester United expected he would after signing him from Fulham in 2010. The England international is a superb athlete, but his footballing intelligence is seriously suspect. 2. Ashley Young’s impressive performances in pre-season lulled many Manchester United supporters and Louis Van Gaal into a false sense of security. Young has flattered to deceive since completing his £17 million move from Aston Villa in 2011 and no longer has any business being near Manchester United’s first team. 3. Vito Mannone has said he and his Sunderland team-mates should reimburse the fans who travelled to Southampton and watched their team lose 8-0. Manager Gus Poyet said Sunderland's heaviest Premier League loss was his "most embarrassing" moment in football. Sunderland scored two own goals, which included a calamitous 18-yard volley from Argentine Santiago Vergini. "I will personally talk to the team to see if it is possible to pay for their tickets and their trip," Mannone said. The defeat was Sunderland's biggest loss in 32 years and goalkeeper Mannone wanted to meet the costs of the 700-mile journey made by 2,500 "special" Sunderland fans. "I really mean that we should pay their tickets and travel," the 26-year-old Italian added. Mourinho’s Handshake Before Final Whistle Is Disgraceful, Says Keane Roy Keane has warned Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho he would be “knocked out” if he tried to shake hands before the final whistle in Sunday league football. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert refused to take Portuguese’s hand as he prepared to head down the tunnel before the end of his side’s 3-0 defeat by the Blues at Stamford Bridge on September 27, and his assistant Keane’s reaction was even more withering. Asked about the incident as he launched his new autobiography, The Second Half, in Dublin on Thursday afternoon, Keane said: “It’s disgraceful. “I’ve seen him doing it to other managers, it is a disgrace. The game is still going on. You wouldn’t do that on a Sunday morning, you would get knocked out.” But while Mourinho found himself in the firing line, it was Keane’s Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson upon whom the spotlight fell as Keane discussed the falling-out between the pair as his time at Ol ...
Everton host Aston Villa on Saturday at Goodison Park and will be looking to get back to winning ways after going down 2-1 to Manchester United last time out. That game at Old Trafford feels like months ago and there is nothing worse than going into an international break with a defeat – and Everton being Everton have an annoying habit of doing just that. Our latest loss came against an average United side and things might have been very different if it wasn’t for the excellence of De Gea between the home side’s sticks, but now we must look forward and move on to our next challenge which is a vital three points against Villa this weekend. Paul Lambert’s side travel to Goodison on the back on three defeats – to Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal respectively – and their last victory came when they last made the trip to Merseyside, winning 1-0 at the temple of doom across the park. On that particular afternoon the Villains put in an impressive performance and a solitary Agbonlahor (try saying ...

AA good morning football, what a weekend it has been! Arsenal slapped Aston Villa three times, technically two times but hey we take any help we can get-not to proud to admit that. They silence Costa through out the game and Fabregas was dispelled- brilliant game. But the best one must be Manchester United... England striker, Danny Welbeck, has opened his goal scoring account for Arsenal as he netted once in the 0-3 bashing of Aston Villa on Saturday. Three goals in three minutes was all Arsenal needed to secure maximum points in their away game to Aston Villa at the Villa Park. After early chances by both sides which were not converted, the Gunners finally broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, when midfielder Mesut Ozil received a telegraphic pass from Welbeck, leaving the German in good stead to score a relatively easy goal from 12 yards. Ozil was on hand to return the favour almost immediately when he provided a low cross for Welbeck who made no mistake firing home from close range to register his first goal for Arsenal since making a switch from Manchester United. Saturday’s goal was the fourth goal for Welbeck in three matches against Villa. Hopes of a rare comeback for the home team effectively extinguished when Villa defender, Aly Cissokho, bundled a wayward Kieran Gibbs shot into his team’s net. T ...

English Premier League 2014/15 SEASON BEGINS No fixture is considered easy as the English Premier League kicks off today with 20-time champions Manchester United facing Swansea City and Arsenal hosting CrystalPalace in a London derby. Both United and Arsenal will be in the spotlight for the most part of the season following their dramatic campaigns last season. United, who were aiming to defend the title they won in the 2012-13 season, had flopped under manager David Moyes and had finished the season 7th in the log, a position that was as strange to the Red Devils as falling to their ‘noisy’ neighbours twice in the season; the second being a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. Arsenal also had one of their most embarrassing campaigns in recent time, losing on wide margins to Liverpool and Manchester City, and finishing fourth, again, after staying atop the league for most weeks of the season. Unlike how Arsenal started the league last season when they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa, they are favourites to win today ...

Morgan Schneiderlin wants to leave Southampton and play for a Champions League side.
Last week, Chelsea completed a youth double in the form of the FA Youth Cup and the U21 Premier League title. It was a proud moment for the Blues youth system, who have now reached the final of the former tournament five times in the last eight years. But in truth, the Chelsea development squad’s 2-1 victory against Manchester United in the U21 Play-Off final at Old Trafford was a rather hollow victory. For all the millions spent, time consumed and players prioritised in making the West Londoners one of England’s most formidable youth outfits, just three Chelsea academy products have become first team regulars at Stamford Bridge since the turn of the millennium – John Terry, Ryan Bertrand and Nemanja Matic. And although the Chelsea captain’s rise to the starting XI in the early 2000s was a simple enough path, Bertrand and Matic have not been so lucky. Struggling to adequately prove himself as the rightful successor to Ashley Cole, Bertrand has been sent out on loan to Aston Villa this season and . ...

Manchester United's dismal campaign comes to an end at Southampton on Sunday in what is set to be Ryan Giggs's final game in charge before Louis Van Gaal takes control after his World Cup commitments with Netherlands. The Red Devils could sneak into Europe's secondary competition should Tottenham, who currently have a three-point cushion over United but a far inferior goal difference, suffer defeat to Aston Villa and Giggs leads his side to victory at St Mary's Stadium. Elsewhere in the table, Crystal Palace and Sunderland could cap what has been an extraordinary end to the season for both sides by finishing 10th and 12th, respectively. Tony Pulis, who has been nothing short of a revelation since replacing Ian Holloway at Selhurst Park back in November, has lifted the Eagles from the bottom three to 11th and could still finish above former side Stoke City in the table. Sunderland, meanwhile, have pulled off something of a great escape, with the Black Cats capable of finishing as high as 12th in the table, ...

IF we had won against Aston Villa, Swansea, Stoke and Manchester United, we would still be winning the league. But no.
Match Report Sun 4 May 2014, Stamford Bridge and Norwich City's ambitions at opposite ends of the Barclays Premier League table hang by a thread after a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. On the back of their midweek semi- final defeat by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea were unable to restore winning ways against their relegation-threatened opponents. Andre Schurrle and David Luiz struck a post and crossbar respectively for the hosts either side of half-time as nerves worked against an engaging spectacle. Jose Mourinho's title hopes will end if Liverpool win at Crystal Palace on Monday, while Manchester City, leaders having beaten Everton 3-2 on Saturday, will restrict them to third position if they win their match in hand against Aston Villa on Wednesday. Norwich ended a run of five straight league defeats but Sunderland's 1-0 triumph at Manchester United means that Neil Adams' side must beat Arsenal on the final weekend and hope that Sunderland, who hold a vastly superior goal difference ...
Fresh from the first defeat under Ryan Giggs, Manchester United play host to Hull City, hoping to make amends for the disappointing loss against Sunderland. The Red Devils are 4/11 favourites to claim maximum points and 5/6 for a half-time/full-time win at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, the Tigers have survived the season in spite of the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa and they are 8/1 to win at Old Trafford and pour more misery on their more illustrious opponents. DON'T LOSE YOUR PLACE. I am surprised that it only takes one season to fall from grace to grass - from Champions League to totally out of Europe, not even Europa League! First, it was Liverpool, then Chelsea, and now...the red devil, the almighty Manchester United that painted and monopolised the EPL to themselves. Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Manchester United have all had the luxury of being one of the best EPL 4 and have also crashed out, while some crashed beyond redemption to eat the dust preserved for such. Since 1996-97 season when 'Arsene who?' according to Ferguson took over, Arsenal has been established as a Top 4 club and have fought tooth and nail to ensure they remain competitive for that. They have won several laurels since then and have smashed several records that would be the envy of those clubs with endless vault of money. Then, they took a bigger step.enlarging their territory and tightening their purse even further! And since 2005, every football exp ...
Stoke City v FULHAM Stoke defender Marc Muniesa should deputise for Ryan Shawcross, who is suspended after his Tottenham red card. And winger Oussama Assaidi will be assessed on matchday after sustaining a knock to his knee in training. Fulham's captain and top scorer Steve Sidwell has not trained this week after limping out of the draw with Hull and may not make the trip. However £11m forward Kostas Mitroglou has stepped up his recovery from a knee injury and may play a part. Fulham joined the elite of English football in 2001. Of the current roll-call of top-flight clubs only seven can boast a longer continuous run of seasons in the Premier League - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham. However, the Cottagers will bow out after 13 campaigns at the top table if they lose this game and either Norwich or Sunderland win over the weekend. Such is their plight that even if Fulham win this weekend whilst Cardiff, Norwich, Sunderland and Villa all lose, they could ...
