The test of three matches in six days has pushed players and managers to the limit over the festive period but tired legs have not stopped some from impressing. Chelsea's humbling at Tottenham followed Manchester City's late New Year's Day win over Sunderland, results which leave the pair equal on points and goal difference to set up a mouth- watering title race in 2015. Elsewhere, Southampton have rediscovered form which builds hope of Champions League qualification but West Brom - with Tony Pulis now in charge - frustrated another side chasing the top four, earning a point at West Ham. Crystal Palace will also see change with Alan Pardew set to take the hot seat and they warmed up for his arrival with a draw at Aston Villa, and what next for Everton? Beaten again. EPL PREVIEW SO FAR With the season now at the halfway point, the Premier League table has a familiar feel to it. Title favourites Chelsea currently lead the way having lost just the once so far, while defending champions Manchester City are hot on their heels. Manchester United have shown remarkable consistency of late to haul themselves back into the title race as rank outsiders, while Arsenal sit outside the top 4 on goal difference only. At the other end of the table, newly promoted trio Burnley, Leicester and QPR are among those hoping to stave off relegation. Hull, West Brom and Crystal Palace join them in the battle to consolidate their Premier League status. Perhaps the biggest shock has been the downturn in form of Merseyside pairing Liverpool and Everton. The duo finished 2nd and 5th, respectively, last season, with big things expected of the two teams. However, it goes without saying both the Reds and the Toffees have underwhelmed so far this term. Both teams returned to European action this sea ...

West Brom vs Manchester City: Team news, kick-off time, odds and stats
LAURIE WHITWELL AT THE HAWTHORNS: Manchester City struck three times in the first half as they cruised to a comfortable victory at West Brom on Boxing Day.
Yaya Toure buries the penalty kick to give after David Silva is fouled inside of the box, giving Manchester City a 2-0 lead over West Brom.
Yaya Toure shrugged off John Terry's claim the title-race pressure is all on Manchester City by leading Manuel Pellegrini's men to a 3-1 victory at West Brom. Chelsea captain Terry said "it's going to be tough" for his side's rivals to stay close to the pacesetters after the Blues took a temporary six-point Premier League lead with a 2-0 victory over West Ham. Terry also said Chelsea's early Boxing Day kick-off and ninth consecutive Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge heaped the pressure on second-placed City. Toure and company had other ideas however, the Ivorian netting a penalty to send City 2-0 up in just 13 minutes at The Hawthorns following Fernando's opener. David Silva added City's third goal in the first half, before the visitors shut up shop to coast home after the turnaround despite Brown Ideye netting for West Brom late on. The Etihad Stadium side stretched their winning run to nine games in all competitions, and seven in the Premier League. Terry's header and Diego Costa's 13th goal of ...

Premier League - City again without strikers - Champions Manchester City will again be without any senior strikers for their Barclays Premier League trip to West Brom on Boxing Day.
Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed Sergio Aguero is still another month away from a return to Manchester City's first team. The striker, who leads the Premier League scoring charts this season with 14 goals, damaged knee ligaments against Everton on December 6 and was initially ruled out for up to six weeks. Pellegrini previously claimed Aguero could return to face Arsenal on January 18 but has now hinted at a slight delay ahead of the Boxing Day trip to West Brom. Meanwhile, speculation over loanee Frank Lampard's future is yet to be resolved, with City keen to delay the 36-year-old's move to New York City FC, but Pellegrini hopes to see the situation solved shortly.
Manchester City have been alerted to the news that West Brom have suspended fresh contract talks with striker Saido Berahino.
Nasri writes his name into Manchester City folklore COMMENT: The Frenchman smashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards beyond Morgan De Sanctis before setting up Pablo Zabaleta to seal a famous win for Manuel Pellegrini's men Dec 11, 2014 00:45:00By Liam Twomey As Manchester City took to the Stadio Olympico pitch for their date with destiny, Manuel Pellegrini knew he would need a new hero. Only twice since Sergio Aguero’s arrival from Atletico Madrid in July 2011 had City started a football match without any of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva or their Argentine superstar. On both occasions – at the Etihad against West Brom in the Premier League in May last year and Blackburn in the FA Cup in January – they had won, but Rudi Garcia’s Roma on home turf were always going to present a starkly different challenge. Such are the resources available to Pellegrini that City still boasted arguably the stronger XI on paper but, as the Premier League champions have repeatedly found to their cost in Eur ...

Who’s the most dangerous team in the Premier League? Is it Liverpool with their lethal ‘SAS’ partnership, Yaya Toure-driven Manchester City or Mourinho machine Chelsea? For managers, it’s West Brom.
Facing Bayern Munich is a terrifying thought for most Manchester United fans right now. Beaten comfortably by both Liverpool and Manchester City in recent home games, United are clearly vulnerable, and the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final could be a bloodbath. So, what can under-fire manager David Moyes do to avoid embarrassment? What can he do to give his team even the slightest hope of progress? I say ATTACK. I say he should go at Bayern with a high tempo and tell his United team to attack them as they would West Brom, Norwich or Fulham. Yes, we may well get hammered, but at least they'll have sent a message of intent. And who knows what an early goal or two could do to his team's fragile confidence.
Unwanted records by David Moyes. The Chosen One, Moyes, is currently looking like the Wrong One. Review: Title 'impossible', says Mourinho, after defeat Sat 29 Mar 2014 Own goal by John Terry hands Crystal Palace win while West Brom and Cardiff share six-goal thriller. Jose Mourinho said it was"impossible" for Chelsea to win the Barclays Premier League after John Terry's own goal sent the Blues to a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace. The Chelsea captain put through his own net in the 52nd minute at Selhurst Park. Palace full-back Joel Ward whipped in a cross from the left and, as Terry challenged Joe Ledley, the ball glanced off the captain's head and flew past Petr Cech. It was a huge setback for Mourinho's men, who missed out on the chance to go four points clear at the top with fellow title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City still to play this weekend. It is now impossible to win the title," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "We depend too much on other results. "With what happened two weekends ago [losing to Aston Villa] and today, it is too much now and we depend on too many results. "Of course, with m ...

Well well, we have had a nice weekend. Manchester United back with a bang and Manchester City yet again loses to Wigan Athletic. Next week we face Liverpool who does not have any match this week. So they are probably more rested and likely to be strong. But that ain't a problem. We as a whole team have improved and found a new pair in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Also, with Fellaini our mid field has improved. Juan Mata , Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie lead the attack. However, David Moyes in the recent Press Conference stated that Shinji Kagawa will be given more playing time. This is a good news to all of us. The lad gave a cameo against West Brom. Sir Alex Ferguson has backed David Moyes to turn Manchester United's dismal run of form around and become a success at Old Trafford if he is given the time. "They [United] will be all right," Ferguson, speaking in Los Angeles at a party thrown by British Consul-General Chris O'Connor, said in quotes reported by the Daily Telegraph ahead of Sunday's Oscars. "It's early days and there have been a lot of changes. He [Moyes] needs time. I was there for 27 years, so with a new manager, it takes time. But they'll be OK." Moyes retains the support of the club's owners, the Glazer family, and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, and has been promised significant funds to strengthen his squad in the summer. However following next Saturday's trip to The Hawthorns to face West Brom, United embark on what could be a crucial run of three home games in nine days against Liverpool, Olympiakos and Manchester City.

Scott Sinclair Holds Talks with Pepe Mel He's unlikely to ever get back in the reckoning at Manchester City, and Scott Sinclair's loan spell at West Bromwich Albion is now turning a little sour too. The winger has only featured once from the bench since the Spaniard took over at The Hawthorns, and that led to him holding talks with the ex-Real Betis boss. Mel told the West Brom website: "On Friday Scott Sinclair spoke with me. I told him he is a good player, a good winger,At the moment West Brom need hard work on the pitch. Posted on: Sat 15 Feb 2014 Summary We exit the FA Cup at the fifth-round stage having not matched the performance level of the league win on this ground earlier in the month. It was a deserved win for Manchester City who this time found a way to stop Chelsea's counter-attacking threat, and were able to restrict the visitors to no attempts on target during the 90 minutes. Stevan Jovetic in the first half and Samir Nasri in the second scored the goals that did the damage after well-worked moves. Man City's display was not packed with attempts on goal, although Petr Cech saved well from Edin Dzeko before the break, but they had enough to end our run of 12 games unbeaten, stretching back to the Capital One Cup exit at Sunderland. Chelsea facing defensive dilemmas (PA) Wednesday 12 February 2014 Share Chelsea facing defensive dilemmas © AFP Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is in danger of being without key central defenders John Terry and Gary Cahill for Saturday's FA Cup clash at Manchester City. Mourinho had hoped Terry would be fit for the English Premier League game at West Bromwich Albion after sitting out Saturday's 3-0 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge with a double muscle injury. But the 33-year-old was again missing, with his absence felt as the Baggies staged a late second-half rally to grab a 1-1 draw following Branislav Ivanovic's opener in first-half injury-time. Mourinho will be hoping the additional game off will have allowed Terry sufficient time to recover ahead of the fifth-round tie with City. Cahill is expected to join captain Terry on the injury list. There is bad news for Chelsea ahead of the FA Cup fifth round clash with Manchester City on Saturday as Gary Cahill could miss the game through injury. The centre-back picked up the knock during Tuesday night’s 1-1 Premier League draw with West Bromwich Albion and the 28-year-old’s absence could leave manager Jose Mourinho with a serious selection headache. “Once I got the knock, I was struggling from then on,” Cahill was quoted by the Mirror. “It happened when a West Brom player went for a header and I was on the floor. “He landed just inside my knee/calf. It is sore and we’ll see what it’s like today.” The England international joins Blues captain John Terry on the sidelines, with the 33-year-old sitting out the match with West Brom due to a knee problem and there is a chance Mourinho could be without the Portuguese coach’s first choice central defence for the City game. are the Premier League liabilities? They are the players who cannot be trusted, the names whose presence on a team-sheet is the cause of anxiety for supporters. Every club has one; the weak link, the liability. Monday night’s showcase match between Manchester City and Chelsea featured one such culpable character. And so it proved that the Argentine was outran and outplayed by his Chelsea adversaries as they emerged deserved 1-0 victors. In the six months since David Moyes's arrival at Old Trafford the 50-year-old has been through the full gamut of managerial emotions. The joy of winning the Community Shield in his first game; the satisfaction of keeping hold of Wayne Rooney after a turbulent summer; the pride in beating league leaders Arsenal at Old Trafford and thrashing Bayer Leverkusen; but also the frustration of missing out on a host of transfer targets; the embarrassment of a hiding at rivals Manchester City; the pain of home defeats to West Brom, Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton and the disappointment of cup defeats to Sunderland and Swansea. But today has the possibility to add more depth to Moyes' debut season. His side could face a heavy defeat against an in-form Chelsea keen to prove a point and strengthen their own title ambitions. On the other hand, against the odds, Moyes could lead his side to a huge win at Stamford Bridge which would leave the bookmakers, critics and pundits in a state of shock. Which will it be? We will ...

A revitalised goalkeeper, an impenetrable centre- back pairing, the return of a midfield enforcer and an affirming win in Munich - how the Gunners became such imperious travellers For most sides, the prospect of back-to-back trips to the Stadio San Paolo and Etihad Stadium would be a daunting one. But not Arsenal. Arsene Wenger takes his men to Italy on Wednesday night to face a Napoli side who have lost just once at home, before meeting a Manchester City side who boast a 100 per cent home record in the Premier League. Neither trip will be treated with fear or trepidation, though. Not anymore. The Gunners have lost just one of their last 17 away matches in all competitions, winning 15 of those encounters (including the Capital One Cup shoot- out victory over West Brom). They top the Premier League away form table this season, averaging 2.28 points per game on their travels, and boast the best away defensive record in the division, conceding just five times. It all began at the Allianz Arena in March. Just ...

African football News reports Yaya Toure scored twice as Manchester City saw off West Brom to clinch only their second away Premier League win of the season
Sport 17 comments16,132 views Media Image Ltd If you’re looking for Manchester United in the Premier League table this morning, you might be alarmed by the fact you have to scroll all the way down to 8th. That’s how things stand for the defending champions at present, following their worst ever start to a league campaign that has seen them win just three games all season. Calamitous defeats against Liverpool, Manchester City and West Brom have interspersed with these unconvincing victories – with the Red Devils perhaps fortunate to leave the Stadium of Light with the three points against Sunderland earlier this month – while yet more points were dropped over the weekend against Southampton. That leaves them eight points adrift of table-toppers Arsenal – For United, and their manager David Moyes, this simply isn’t good enough. There was always bound to be a transitional period when Moyes succeeded from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this year, but even the most pessimistic of United fa ...

Manchester United will play Swansea City at Old Trafford and Norwich entertain Fulham. Chelsea travel to Championship form side Derby County, while Manchester City visit Blackburn Rovers. Holders Wigan host Milton Keynes Dons while non-league sides Kidderminster and Macclesfield entertain Peterborough and Sheffield Wednesday respectively. West Brom will play Crystal Palace at home and Cardiff travel to Newcastle in the other all-Premier League ties of the round, while Liverpool have been given a tie at home to either League One Oldham or League Two Mansfield. The Latics knocked Brendan Rodgers's men out of the fourth round of last season's competition at Boundary Park, while a Luis Suarez handball ensured Liverpool avoided an FA Cup third-round shock at Mansfield Town at this stage last season. The last time north London rivals ...
Manchester United version 2013-14: Simply not good enough By AlexThanopoulos, Picture this: Tottenham and manager Andre Villas-Boas, coming off a 6-0 battering at the hands of Man City, have Man United next up at home. AVB and Co., still licking their wounds, find a Manchester United team sheet that consists of Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley and Antonio Valencia partnering Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa in attack. Throw in a defence that leaks more than Julian Assange, and all of a sudden you have a team that can believe that can be up against the reigning Premier League Champions and think “this doesn’t look a daunting task.” Quite frankly it isn’t, and it wasn’t. They drew 2-2. We all know that David MoyesManchester United are struggling. Loses to the hands of Manchester City and Liverpool are not rare in United’s dominant history. Losses to West Brom and Everton at home, as well as conceding late equalisers to Southampton and Cardiff, are not. This season United simply doesn’t have that ...
Another View of Manchester City at West Brom tonight
Southampton 1-1 Manchester City Pablo Osvaldo scored a first-half equaliser to earn Southampton a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The Italy forward was involved in an post-match melee as injury-hit Southampton slipped to a third consecutive defeat against Aston Villa on Wednesday, but he returned to St Mary's Stadium and grabbed the headlines for the right reasons. An individual effort from Southampton’s big-money signing was brought the home side level after Sergio Aguero continued his purple patch in front of goal in the 10th minute to hand Manchester City an early lead. Manuel Pellegrini's side won at West Brom on Wednesday to record their second win away from the Etihad Stadium in the Barclays Premier League this season, but were unable to build on that result at St Mary’s. Midfielder Victor Wanyama suffered a hairline fracture to his leg and right-back Nathaniel Clyne damaged his pelvis in midweek, meaning Jack Cork and Calum Chambers came in as two of four changes in Pochettino's injury-ravage ...

Tennis ace Goran Ivanisevic will be at West Bromwich Albion tomorrow for their clash with Manchester City. David Law, media manager for the Champions Tour and a Baggie, is the man responsible for getting Ivanisevic interested. “David’s a crazy West Brom fan, a Baggies freak, and he was telling me all about them. Every time I saw him he was in a bad mood, very jumpy, edgy, stressed about the results,” Ivanisevic told the Daily Express. “Until eight Years Ago I knew nothing of West Bromwich Albion. It was 2005 when they were bottom of the Premier League and David was getting on my nerves. I started looking out for West Brom’s results and I was hooked. “I’d be in my room in a hotel and I’d find myself looking for Albion’s score on Teletext. It was exciting.”

Robin Van Persie: Drew United closer to Arsenal Rob Parrish looks at the title chances of the top eight sides in the Premier League, presenting a case for and against each contender. "What we have learned is not only that Manchester United could beat Arsenal, but that everybody can beat everybody in this Premier League. Maybe the whole quality of the league has gone up." That was the verdict of Arsene Wenger in the wake of the Gunners' 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday, and while the north London side remain out in front in the Premier League, their advantage has been cut to two points with eight teams now within six points of the summit. Several shock results this season would give weight to Wenger's argument. Manchester City losing to Sunderland on Sunday was the latest in a succession of unexpected outcomes which has seen United beaten at home by West Brom, the Gunners humbled by Aston Villa at the Emirates, Chelsea slip up at Newcastle, Liverpool fall at home to Southampton, and struggling Norwich ...
BPL Match Preview : Arsenal vs Liverpool; Saturday November 2; Emirates Stadium; 5.30pm After nine games of the season, these sides have been firmly placed into a box labelled ‘underdog title contenders’. With one defeat apiece in the league so far – Arsenal’s slip at home against Aston Villa, and Liverpool’s also a home defeat, to Southampton – the reluctance to put them alongside Chelsea and Manchester City in the ‘big boy title contenders’ box stems from the fact that both have enjoyed a relatively gentle range of opening fixtures. Liverpool’s highest-ranked opponents have been an impressive fifth-placed Saints (the Reds also have a win over Manchester United on their record – but then, so do West Brom), while the Gunners have a victory over fourth-placed Tottenham. But this tie is justifiably described as each side’s biggest Premier League test thus far. Brendan Rodgers holds the advantage of taking a fresh set of legs into the match, with Liverpool spared a midweek League Cup ou ...
Some funny football quotes from last weekend; "Steven proved he is a top, top, top, top player!" Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers after Steven Gerrard played his part in the 4-1 thrashing of West Brom - days after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed the Reds skipper was not a top, top player in his autobiography. “This is the drama of the last-minute goal. I beat City in the last minute in Madrid and destroyed my trousers when I slid onto the pitch. I lost in the last minute against Bayern Munich and somebody put a knife in my back and I didn't even notice.” Jose Mourinho after celebrating Chelsea’s last-gasp win over Manchester City by hugging random fans in the stand, much to the annoyance of opposite number Manuel Pellegrini. “I didn't shake his hand at the end because I didn't want to.” Looks like Mourinho is off Pellegrini’s Christmas card list. "I've got to be honest, you wouldn't want to have a fight with this fella. He’s a big ‘un…. I think we better give him an extra year on his contract ...
Have the fates finally turned for Fernando Torres? Another disappointing league performance seemed on the cards after a shocking miss from 10 yards left Jose Mourinho looking like a broken man, but the Spaniard showed his determination in creating Chelsea's first and then later to capitalize on Joe Hart's dreadful decision to come out of goal, scoring a simple but deserved winner over Manchester City. Luis Suarez was simply on fire in Liverpool's 4-1 rout over West Brom. Even Daniel Sturridge's glorious chip was left in the shadow of the Uruguayan's unstoppable hat-trick. His opener was a tricky nutmeg and true finish, he conjured up a breathtaking header guided into the top corner from just inside the area, and it could have been even more amazing when his overhead kick smashed against the crossbar. Suarez may have scored the better header, but there's no underestimating the importance of Wayne Rooney's brilliantly redirected effort with twelve minutes to go and Manchester United trailing Stoke 2-1. The ...

A Good Point Jack Wilshere’s first premiership league goal in three years rescued a point for us that keep us top of the table going into the international break. It’s early yet but the West Brom match shows that this team has character coming back from one nil down to get a draw while not playing great. This is partly down to the injuries, but credit has to be given to West Brom that played with real belief in them selves after their great win at Old Trafford. The West Brom game should guard against overconfidence and complacency that have dented us in the past. In four weeks time our fixture list is Chelsea (h) Liverpool (h) Borussia Dortmund (a) Manchester United (a). Sir Alex Ferguson saw Manchester United downturn coming, says Macari. Former Man Utd stalwart Lou Macari believes Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to retire came in anticipation of an impending decline for the club. 12th placed Red Devils have struggled so far this term under new boss David Moyes, slumping to Premier League defeats to fierce rivals Manchester City & Liverpool, while also failing to West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday. It’s always been apparent that David Moyes is not Alex Ferguson. Scientific developments in the field of genetic alterations do not appear to be advanced enough to make any such alteration to Moyes’ double helices. Manchester United must accept that it is cheaper to simply buy another midfielder and defender rather than spending billions in research at John Hopkins hospital and Cambridge University, however disappointing that is. But all is not lost. David Moyes might be in serious trouble, given the decisions made against West Brom, Liverpool and Manchester City. Sure, he’s going to have to learn to improve, and quickly. Luckily, there is an easy hitlist of areas to improve in without having to spend any money before January. ...Continue Reading

Manchester United under David Moyes lost to Liverpool, Man City and West Brom and it was small news, but when Chelsea FC under Jose Mourinho lost to Everton and Basel, all *** was let loss, the Press and haters went to town screaming; "Shame", "Is this the end of the Special One?" "Jose has lost it", "He will soon run away", "He will be sacked", etc. Oh what manner of hatred? Naa waa oo.!
Much has been debated about David Moyes' ability to manage Manchester United, especially after yesterday's defeat to West Brom. Although many United supporters are aware of of the difficult start to the season in terms of fixture list, they still haven't given Moyes a break when it comes to results. How do the results from last season compare and subsequent points tally stack up against the teams faced so far this year? So far, Moyes' United have faced Chelsea (Draw), Crystal Palace (Win) and West Brom (Loss) at home and Swansea (Win), Liverpool (Loss) and Manchester City (Loss) away in the Premier League. They have taken seven points in total from these six opponents. How did Ferguson compare with the same fixtures? Considering Crystal Palace are a promoted team, it is not possible to take a result for this fixture from last season. An assumptive three points were taken as United beat all three relegated sides at home last season. Ferguson managed; Chelsea (Loss), Crystal Palace (Assumptive win) and West ...
A weekend of shocks in Premier League and Spanish La Liga : The Premier League saw both Manchester clubs beaten. Manchester United lost 2-1 at home to West Brom, which sees the Red Devils way down in 12 th place which is also their worst start to the league since 1989. Manchester City lost away to Aston Villa 3-2 and all credit to Villa to claw back into the game. In the La Liga The Madrid Derby saw R Madrid beaten at Santiago Bernebaeu 1-0 to city rivals Atletico Madrid who ended their 14 years of misery. Last win came way back in 1999 for A Madrid over R Madrid in the league.
NO REST FOR THAT GAUNT-FACED HAUNTED MAN , David Moyes. Yes, it does mean I may have to take a few more blows, definitely... maybe even more than that. Maybe all season I have to take a few blows." – David Moyes, after Manchester United's 4-1 loss to Manchester City. Moyes just ad libbed after West Brom deservedly beat United at Old Trafford. A wag cracked that Moyes has succeeded in doing what he could never do in over ten years at Goodison - put Everton over United in the table. It was never going to be easy for Moyes to live up to the lofty standard of his predecessor at Manchester United. Transition is complicated. In modern football, patience isn't a quality readily exhibited. The knives are out for Moyes. The carving commenced months ago. The cuts are deeper now. And so are the questions. Wednesday's Capital One Cup victory over Liverpool created a couple of days some breathing room for the gaffer. But let's be honest, Capital One Cup will never be the make-or-break competition in the court of pub ...
Elsewhere, Tottenham cruised to victory over Norwich, Manchester City were held to a frustrating draw by Stoke -- and their former City boss Mark Hughes -- Newcastle recorded a second successive league win, at Aston Villa, Fulham drew with West Brom and Cardiff earned a point at Hull.Former City boss Mark Hughes was left the happier, with neither side able find the winning touch. City took time to settle and were reduced to long range efforts as Alvaro Negredo curled one over from 25 yards. At the other end, Stoke grew in confidence as Kenwyne Jones capitalised on a Samir Nasri mistake. However, Joe Hart was equal to the shot and spared Nasri's blushes. New Stoke signing Marko Arnautovic almost netted on his debut, but his deflected shot was again well saved by Hart before Robert Huth was left out cold after suffering a knee to the head when challenging for a header with Negredo. Both sides continued to probe for a late winner, but the home side did more than enough to earn a share of the spoils. Aston Vi ...

Striker Romelu Lukaku also joined on loan from Chelsea for the season, while Republic Of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy came in from Wigan for £13 million. Everton ended the day in profit after selling Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United for £27.5 million and Victor Anichebe to West Brom for a fee that could rise to £6 million, and there was the additional boost of hanging on to Leighton Baines, despite United’s attempts to sign him over the summer. Barry believes that a squad that finished sixth in the Premier League under David Moyes last season can go two places higher under new boss Martinez. The 32-year-old said: “There are some fantastic teams out there who have spent a lot of money on improving their squads but, looking at the squad here and the ambitions of the club, there’s no reason why we can’t compete for that fourth spot. “Over the p ...
