Manchester United's stats show how far they still have to go before they can get back to the top Louis Van Gaal was insistent Manchester United were the dominant team. He even brought out that old insult about the opponents ‘coming for a draw’ – a line that sounds weak after a share of the points and worse after they’ve gone home with all three. United skipper Wayne Rooney promptly went further. “I think we deserved to win,” he told Sky Sports. Players and managers are entitled to put a positive spin on things, but this felt dangerously close to ignoring the obvious. For while, Juan Mata squandered two good openings as well as a more difficult chance, this was still the first time United have failed to register a shot on target since April 2012 at Manchester City. It was the first time they’d done so at Old Trafford since May 2009. Those dates might surprise some given David Moyes’ record-busting efforts for much of last season. Indeed, it was something of a shock to discover Southampton h ...

Chelsea continue to lead City by three points, with United seven points further back, while West Ham's loss allowed Southampton, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City and Liverpool to make up ground in the race for the top four. Goals in each half from John Terry and Diego Costa – his 13th of the campaign – earned Jose Mourinho's Chelsea a one-sided home win over West Ham, who slipped to fifth. West Ham were expected to provide a stern test after a run of five games without defeat, but despite . ...

EPL: Chelsea registers easy win over West Ham: Chelsea overpowered West Ham United and Manchester City outclassed West Bromwich Albion as the Premier League title rivals signalled their intent at the start of a hectic holiday programme on Friday. Goals from John Terry and Diego Costa helped leaders Chelsea to a dominant 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge before City overwhelmed West Brom 3-1 at a snowy Hawthorns -- Fernando, Yaya Tour and David Silva on target for the champions. Wayne Rooney struck twice for chasing Manchester United in a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United while Southampton's return to form was underlined by a 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace which lifted the Saints back into the top four. Terry tapped in Chelsea's opener after 31 minutes and Costa sealed the points for Jose Mourinho's side, although the scoreline disguised a gulf in quality between the two sides who were separated by only three places in the table at kickoff. West Ham ground out a 0-0 draw in the corresponding fixture last year ...
The star trio will hope to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in this year's team, having been shortlisted for a place in the illustrious side The shortlist for the forwards in Fifa's FIFPro World XI has been announced, with Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa all nominated from the Premier League. The Manchester City striker leads the way, having helped his side win the Premier League in 2013-14, though injury curtailed his World Cup. Aguero has also hit the ground running this term, scoring 17 goals in 19 appearances. Rooney, meanwhile, was a rare bright spot under David Moyes, and has impressed under Louis Van Gaal, having scored his first ever World Cup goal for England at the World Cup. Costa will also fancy his chances of inclusion, with his goals last season propelling Atletico Madrid to the Champions League final, and his start under Jose Mourinho cementing his position as one of the finest strikers in world football. The Brazil-born Spain international has hit ...
Chelsea held; Arsenal, United, Reds win Chelsea dropped points for only the third time this season as the Premier League leaders were held to a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday. Jose Mourinho's side had swept to the top of the table with 10 wins from their 12 matches and only Manchester City and Manchester United had avoided defeat against the Blues in domestic action. But Chelsea were unable to break down dogged Sunderland, who held the Blues without a goal for the first time in 20 matches in all competitions this season. The west Londoners are now seven points clear of second-placed Southampton, who host champions City on Sunday. Chelsea winger Willian almost opened the scoring with a fiercely struck low shot that rebounded off a post. Yet Sunderland were making it tough for Mourinho's men and Santiago Vergini fired against the crossbar from 10 yards. A tetchy encounter got even more heated when Chelsea striker Diego Costa escaped with a booking rather than a red card for an elbow on Sunderland defend ...
England Under-21s striker Harry Kane continued his impressive goalscoring form for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with a free-kick winner against Aston Villa. The 21-year-old has been amongst the goals for both club and country so far this season and his appearance from the bench in the second half at Villa Park helped Spurs come back from behind to collect all three points, courtesy of Kane's first Premier League strike this campaign. Elsewhere, Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for Manchester City as they secured a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Hart kept out, amongst others, the returning Wayne Rooney after the England captain made his return from suspension to the starting line-up for United. Read the full round-up here:

Neal Thurman Rotoworld - June 04, 2014 What a mess that was, huh? If ever you could fill up the Internet beyond the breaking point with opinion, Manchester United’s season would have done it. It’s hard to tell quite what generated the most content. Was it the resignations of Sir Alex Ferguson and (less spectacularly, but possibly just as importantly) David Gill? The appointment of David Moyes? The passing of two transfer windows where United acquired big hair in the form of Marouane Fellaini (a poor fit) and a big name in the form of Juan Mata (a great player but not the answer to United’s midfield woes) but didn’t address the massive issues in central midfield, central defense and on the wings? The massive contract handed to Wayne Rooney despite his age? The finish out of the Champions League places and behind Everton and Spurs? The fact that city rivals Manchester City won the title? That’s a lot of huge negative storylines for any club over the course for twelve months let alone for Mancheste ...

Barton also discusses England's chances at the World Cup and the FA's development of players, and recounts what happened before his infamous sending-off against Manchester City at the Etihad in the final match of the 2011-12 league season.
Robbie Savage, on "Manchester United have been very good, they have bounced back from that shocking performance against Manchester City in midweek. Juan Mata has had a very good day, but what would they do without Wayne Rooney? "I think the win will buy David Moyes a bit of time, but would I give him the money to invest in the summer? I am not sure. I would look to see which managers were available in the summer. Maybe Ryan Giggs could be an option with Sir Alex in an advisor role."
Manchester United's senior hierarchy is “evaluating all possibilities” as it attempts to arrest the club's steep descent under David Moyes. Contrary to public statements that Sir Alex Ferguson's successor will definitely be granted at least a second season as manager, Moyes' dismissal is prominent among those possibilities. Though Tuesday's humiliating 3-0 home loss to Manchester City ensured that United's first post-Ferguson season is statistically the club's worst in the Premier League era, the review of potential candidates to replace Moyes should not be regarded as a knee-jerk reaction. Key decision-makers within the Old Trafford board have been assessing potential replacements as manager for several weeks and further talks are planned. Having already sanctioned a spend of over £60 million on two headline transfers, handed Wayne Rooney a club-record contract renewal, and approved an unprecedented recruitment spend for this summer, the Glazer family is said to be concerned that the Scot will con . ...

TOP TEN MOST RICHEST PLAYERS IN EPL There are some well known reports on who is the highest paid player in the Premier League as Wayne Rooney recently signed a colossal £300,000- a-week deal at Manchester United. Of course whilst earning high wages at a club does contribute towards overall wealth, footballers have several other avenues through which they can make money. So here are the 10 richest players currently plying their trade in the English top tier. 10. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City - £24m Arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2011 for a whopping £38m and is said to earn around £9.6m a year with the Citizens and is midway through a five- year deal with the club. Therefore this fortune is only set to go up - especially if the Argentine can score goals as important as the last minute winner that earned them the title in 2012. 9. Yaya Toure, Manchester City - £25m Aguero's City team-mate now and a midfielder who upon first arriving in England in 2009 from Barcelona was reported to be the highest pai ...
Manchester City did not only destroy Manchester United but humiliated them. Yesterday was not the match like that at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season where a defeat was justified on the ground that it was away derby. What answers are there to justified when you are beaten at home? They simply played them out like underdogs. City scored after 43 seconds, dominate the second half, too, put it beyond their capacity when Dzeko scored second goal after 56 minutes and defended their lead to the end. The biggest mistakes football analyst in England always do is to think that Wayne Rooney can win matches single handed. He was reduced to an inferior player by City world classic stars. Is Rooney star? I doubt to the highest, but I can't deny he's hard working on the squad.
'Pedestrian. Predictable. Man Utd were a mess' 26 March 2014 Updated 07:01 GMT By Phil McNulty - Chief football writer, BBC Sport The sight of a line of Old Trafford stewards guarding "The Chosen One" banner draped over the Stretford End since the appointment of David Moyes as Manchester United manager suggested the mood has started to sour. And the sound of loud and mutinous voices - not too many but enough to be noticed - raised against Moyes and even in the direction of Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who did the choosing, in the directors' box as Manchester City inflicted the latest embarrassment on the fallen Premier League champions carried even greater significance. Liverpool winning 3-0 at Old Trafford less than a fortnight ago was arguably a greater shock to the system than City winning by the same margin on Tuesday as the Merseysiders have barely appeared in United's rear view mirror in title terms in recent years. But there was a difference. United's supporters stayed in place in a noisy show of def ...

EPL BEST PLAYERS ACCORDING TO STATISTIC 10) Yaya Toure - Manchester City - 7.52 rating It's no surprise to see the Ivorian powerhouse make the list, as the midfielder has enjoyed a wonderful goalscoring campaign. Deployed in a deep-lying central midfield position, Toure's notched 16 goals, making him the league's third highest scorer. 9) Fernandinho - Manchester City - 7.63 rating Fernandinho has arguably not been heralded as much as his performances have deserved since his big money summer arrival. He regularly makes tackles and interceptions at the base of midfield, and his work rate is equally superb. 8) Wayne Rooney - Manchester United - 7.64 rating Rooney has been the shining light in United's miserable season, scoring 13 goals and assisting ten more, earning himself a ludicrous £300k-per-week contract in the process. 7) Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool - 7.67 rating The Liverpool striker has formed a wonderful attacking partnership with Luis Suarez up top, and the pair have scored an outrageous 47 goal ...
The first Manchester Derby of the 2013-14 season was won by City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Sergio Agüero opened the scoring on the 16th minute followed by a goal from Yaya Toure just before half time. In the second half Agüero scored his second followed by a Samir Nasri goal three minutes later. Wayne Rooney scored a late free kick for United as a consolation goal. It was the first time in twenty-six years that the Derby had been contested by two new managers: Manuel Pellegrini for Manchester City and David Moyes for Manchester United.
Football - Moyes: Rooney strike is derby boost Manchester United manager David Moyes claims his players will carry "vital belief" into Tuesday night's derby after Wayne Rooney's wonder strike set up victory at West Ham. PA Sport Report – 21 minutes ago Rooney's 58-yard goal spurred United to a 2-0 Premier League victory at Upton Park, and title-chasing Manchester City are next up for Moyes and his men at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old's eighth-minute opener evoked memories of Beckham's famous halfway-line lob against Wimbledon. Former England captain Beckham was a conspicuous face in the crowd as Rooney mimicked his long-range effort from that 3-0 Wimbledon victory back on August 17, 1996. Beckham's wry smile spoke volumes of Rooney's immediate contender for goal of the season, and United manager Moyes suggested the strike can breathe confidence through his revitalised Red Devils. "It was a great goal by a top, top player: technical ability, and awareness to know exact where the goalkeeper was," said Moy ...
ARSENAL DRUBBING LETS LIVERPOOL, CITY POUNCE Arsenal risk being cut adrift in the English Premier League title race after a humiliating 6-0 defeat at leaders Chelsea in Arsene Wenger's 1,000th match as manager. Wenger described the result as "one of the worst days" of his career and his misery was compounded by handsome victories for Liverpool and Manchester City that saw his side slump to fourth place in the table. Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick as Liverpool won 6-3 at Cardiff City to move to within four points of Chelsea, while City are two points further back -- but with three games in hand -- after Yaya Toure also claimed a treble in a 5-0 win over Fulham. Meanwhile, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored an astonishing 58-yard lob in a 2-0 win at West Ham United. Diego Maradona thrust his "Hand Of God" into the air and smiled in approval. If there was a moment that confirmed Liverpool's right to be taken seriously as Premier League title contenders, this was it. The legendary Argentina World Cup winner, sharp suited and sporting deafeningly loud ear-rings, was in attendance in Old Trafford's directors' box on a day of huge and contrasting significance for Manchester United and Liverpool. And Maradona, looking like a well-dressed pirate, will have savoured the quality in Liverpool's display on a day when the secret was well and truly out. Manager Brendan Rodgers, in the shadow of Chelsea and Manchester City, has shaped a side that can win their first title since 1990. Maradona will have appreciated the movement and menace of his fellow South American Luis Suarez, whose partnership with Daniel Sturridge shone a harsh light on the seemingly dysfunctional footballing relationship between Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. The Argentine will have noted the relentless w ...
Dear United fans. all hope is not lost yet, though Man United would need a miracle to conquer the league title this season. The fourth place, synonymous with Champions League football, is still attainable but fewer slip-ups are advised. Defensively, United need to go into the transfer market and buy something solid (see what the purchase of Mesut Ozil by Arsenal has provoked), just as an improvement of players’ medical care would be a Godsend. Imagine the impact good transfer market transactions, coupled with a return to form and the good health of Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, would have on Man United's fortunes. The race against time and points is on. We wish Man United all the best, though Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and the resurgent Tottenham will have other ideas.

Manchester United boss David Moyes can take just a handful of positives out of the season so far - with the Premier League champions failing to compete against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for the title. Wayne Rooney's return to form and the fact that he has committed his long-term future to Manchester United, the signing of Chelsea's Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie's recent admission that he is happy at Old Trafford are just a few of the plusses from Moyes' first season at the club. Another huge bonus this season has been the form of Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj. Few had heard of the 19-year-old teenager this time last year as Januzaj was making strides in Manchester United's development side - rather than in front of thousands at the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney admits it’s difficult to watch arch rivals Liverpool and Manchester City...
Wayne Rooney says it is "really difficult" to see Liverpool and Manchester City doing well while Manchester United struggle.
Well well, we have had a nice weekend. Manchester United back with a bang and Manchester City yet again loses to Wigan Athletic. Next week we face Liverpool who does not have any match this week. So they are probably more rested and likely to be strong. But that ain't a problem. We as a whole team have improved and found a new pair in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. Also, with Fellaini our mid field has improved. Juan Mata , Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie lead the attack. However, David Moyes in the recent Press Conference stated that Shinji Kagawa will be given more playing time. This is a good news to all of us. The lad gave a cameo against West Brom. Meanwhile, Michael Keane, the promising centre back is loaned for rest of the season to Blackburn Rovers.

In the six months since David Moyes's arrival at Old Trafford the 50-year-old has been through the full gamut of managerial emotions. The joy of winning the Community Shield in his first game; the satisfaction of keeping hold of Wayne Rooney after a turbulent summer; the pride in beating league leaders Arsenal at Old Trafford and thrashing Bayer Leverkusen; but also the frustration of missing out on a host of transfer targets; the embarrassment of a hiding at rivals Manchester City; the pain of home defeats to West Brom, Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton and the disappointment of cup defeats to Sunderland and Swansea. But today has the possibility to add more depth to Moyes' debut season. His side could face a heavy defeat against an in-form Chelsea keen to prove a point and strengthen their own title ambitions. On the other hand, against the odds, Moyes could lead his side to a huge win at Stamford Bridge which would leave the bookmakers, critics and pundits in a state of shock. Which will it be? We will ...

Manchester United: Title rivals will be nervous as momentum builds Manchester United did not make a complete case for normal service being resumed by beating Arsenal - but a glance at recent results and the Premier League table suggests the obituaries can stay locked in the drawer. The noise levels around Old Trafford, and the joy that greeted the final whistle, were an accurate measure of this game's significance to United and David Moyes. United needed three points to stop Arsenal extending their lead over them to difficult, if not quite impossible, proportions. Their still relatively new manager needed a victory in a game of such status after previous opportunities against Chelsea, Liverpool and -desperately and embarrassingly -Manchester City yielded only one point. And both duly arrived courtesy of Robin Van Persie's soaring 27th minute header from Wayne Rooney's corner. If the striker is, as Arsene Wenger suggests, still "an Arsenal man" then he has a funny way of showing it. Van Persie scored in bo ...

Arsenal’s title credentials will be tested to the limit when they travel to Manchester City on Saturday in the midday kick-off. Arsene Wenger’s men will face a City side unbeaten at home in the League and brimming with confidence after coming from 2-0 down to defeat Bayern Munich 3-2 at the Allianz Arena. The defending champions went 2-0 up within the first quarter of an hour, until David Silva, Alex Kolarov and James Milner came up with the goals Pellegrini required to be victorious over Pep Guardiola for the VERY FIRST TIME in his managerial career. City have been in dominant form especially at home in the League, winning all seven fixtures and scoring 27 goals in that stretch. They have only let in 2; one of them a fantastic free kick by Wayne Rooney in the 4-1 clobbering of Manchester United . Recently, it was Spurs that collected a sound thrashing. Kun Aguero, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo all had their names on the score sheet in what still remains one of the most one-sided matches I have ever ...

Manchester United version 2013-14: Simply not good enough By AlexThanopoulos, Picture this: Tottenham and manager Andre Villas-Boas, coming off a 6-0 battering at the hands of Man City, have Man United next up at home. AVB and Co., still licking their wounds, find a Manchester United team sheet that consists of Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley and Antonio Valencia partnering Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa in attack. Throw in a defence that leaks more than Julian Assange, and all of a sudden you have a team that can believe that can be up against the reigning Premier League Champions and think “this doesn’t look a daunting task.” Quite frankly it isn’t, and it wasn’t. They drew 2-2. We all know that David MoyesManchester United are struggling. Loses to the hands of Manchester City and Liverpool are not rare in United’s dominant history. Losses to West Brom and Everton at home, as well as conceding late equalisers to Southampton and Cardiff, are not. This season United simply doesn’t have that ...
VALENCIA FORM GREAT TRIUMPH FOR MOYES Even David Moyes admits he's running out of things to say about Wayne Rooney. So let's switch focus. Antonio Valencia was outstanding at Tottenham yesterday. He really had Jan Vertonghen rattled and even AVB's double-teaming in the second-half didn't slow him down. It was still this season when Valencia was hammered for the defeat at Manchester City, with captain Nemanja Vidic visibly chastising his teammate for letting Alexsandar Kolarov get the better of him. After a flat previous 12 months, the Ecuadorian appeared on his way out of Old Trafford. But he's now back to his very best - a great triumph to Moyes and his newly-assembled coaching staff.
SPURS 2-2 UNITED - REPORT FROM THE LANE Kyle Walker and Sandro both scored a fantastic goal in each half but it wasn’t enough to give us the three points as Wayne Rooney twice cancelled out our lead in a thrilling 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane this afternoon. Walker smashed home an 18th minute free-kick to fire us ahead before Rooney equalised just after the half hour mark, while Sandro scored a magnificent 25-yard rocket on 54 minutes to edge us in front again. But United’s England striker levelled it up just three minutes later from the spot, after Hugo Lloris was adjudged to have fouled Danny Welbeck. The Head Coach made three changes from the side beaten at Manchester City a week ago, with Vlad Chiriches, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli coming in for Younes Kaboul, Lewis Holtby and Erik Lamela. It was also the 300th league appearance of Michael Dawson’s career, and Walker’s 200th career appearance in all competitions. The game started at a great tempo and there was certainly no hangover evident f ...
Wayne Rooney salvaged a 2-2 draw for Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday but the Premier League champions lost further ground as Chelsea and Manchester City offered further evidence that they will lead the pursuit of Arsenal. Chelsea recovered from going behind after 13 seconds to beat Southampton 3-1 at home with John Terry scoring on his 400th league appearance for the club and free-scoring Man City climbed to third after spanking Swansea City 3-0. City, for whom Samir Nasri netted twice, have now scored 16 goals in their last three home matches. Liverpool began the day in second place but faltered, losing 3-1 at Hull City.
Wayne Rooney described Manchester United's 1-0 win over Arsenal as a "massive lift" after the champions cut the deficit on the leaders to five points, with Robin Van Persie greeting his winner by celebrating for a first time against his former club. It was a good day for United as two of their title rivals, Manchester City and Tottenham, both lost, and Rooney said: "We knew we had to win today at all costs. That was the toughest we've been to break down and we defended really well. We knew we could not afford to lose, we couldn't let Arsenal get 11 points away from us. "The other results today and yesterday also gave us a boost and we are right back in it now. It's a massive lift, a great weekend for us ahead of the international break. Our aim is to be top or thereabouts at the New Year." Van Persie had scored in each of his previous two United games against Arsenal, but had refused to celebrate. This time, following his 27th-minute header from Rooney's corner, he ran to a section of the home support wit ...
MANCHESTER, England (AP) Robin Van Persie tormented former club Arsenal once again by scoring the only goal in Manchester United's 1-0 victory over the Premier League leaders on Sunday, lifting the resurgent champions to fifth place in the standings. The Netherlands striker met Wayne Rooney's corner with a header into the top corner in the 27th minute to condemn Arsenal to its second loss of the campaign and reduce its lead to two points from Liverpool. Since leaving North London for Manchester in August last year, Van Persie has scored in all three games against Arsenal. After a scratchy start to the season, United is coming good under new manager David Moyes and is now just five points behind Arsenal, which didn't create a clear-cut chance in a flat display at Old Trafford. After picking up just one point in matches against chief rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, it was time for United to deliver and for Moyes to claim a first signature victory in his short, erratic time as Alex Ferguson's ...

Have the fates finally turned for Fernando Torres? Another disappointing league performance seemed on the cards after a shocking miss from 10 yards left Jose Mourinho looking like a broken man, but the Spaniard showed his determination in creating Chelsea's first and then later to capitalize on Joe Hart's dreadful decision to come out of goal, scoring a simple but deserved winner over Manchester City. Luis Suarez was simply on fire in Liverpool's 4-1 rout over West Brom. Even Daniel Sturridge's glorious chip was left in the shadow of the Uruguayan's unstoppable hat-trick. His opener was a tricky nutmeg and true finish, he conjured up a breathtaking header guided into the top corner from just inside the area, and it could have been even more amazing when his overhead kick smashed against the crossbar. Suarez may have scored the better header, but there's no underestimating the importance of Wayne Rooney's brilliantly redirected effort with twelve minutes to go and Manchester United trailing Stoke 2-1. The ...

Backpass, October 21 Part 1 The 1-1 draw against Southampton at home on Saturday was a real disappointment. Mauricio Pochettino's side are flying high and are tough to beat, but title-contenders need to win matches like that at home. Defeats against rivals Liverpool and Manchester City stung, but were understandable. The former was even avenged, to some extent, though the Capital One Cup victory later that month. Losing at home to West Bromwich Albion was worrying though. With the game poised at 1-1 and Robin Van Persie thrown on to join Wayne Rooney up front, United simply don't lose from that position. Especially at Old Trafford. United have played eleven games this season in all competitions. They've been close to their best in perhaps two of them. Experts say Moyes is not blameless, as United stutter, yet he should not be the scapegoat. Deliberation: Is Moyes to blame for Manchester United's malaise... or do the problems go deeper than just the coach?

Hernandez steals the show 26 September By Toby Davis London - Javier Hernandez poached a second-half winner as Manchester United beat arch-rivals Liverpool 1-0 to move into the English League Cup fourth round on Wednesday, subduing Luis Suarez on his return from a 10-match ban. Mexican Hernandez lost his marker and steered home a Wayne Rooney corner a minute into the second half and United held on despite being outplayed for large periods by a Liverpool side welcoming back Uruguayan Suarez for the first time since April. It was a welcome fillip for United manager David Moyes, who had been desperate to avoid a second defeat to a major rival in quick succession after Sunday's 4-1 Premier League loss to Manchester City. Arsenal set up a fourth-round clash against Chelsea, coming through a penalty shootout against West Bromwich Albion after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time. Wayne Rooney reached 200 Manchester United goals with a brace to give David Moyes a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in his first Champions League group game on Tuesday. Once again sporting a black headband to protect a facial injury he picked up last month, Rooney scored twice and made another goal as Moyes made an encouraging European bow at Old Trafford. Overseeing his first continental game since succeeding Alex Ferguson as manager, Moyes saw Rooney, his former Everton protege, give United a 22nd-minute lead. Simon Rolfes equalised with a deflected shot in the 54th minute, but Robin Van Persie's fine volley restored United's lead five minutes later and further goals from Rooney and Antonio Valencia completed the job. After an uncertain start to the season, United appear to have rediscovered their scoring touch ahead of Sunday's trip to derby rivals Manchester City in the Premier League. Wenger waves red flag to lure Torres Fernando Torres in the red of Arsenal?. Don't adjust your sets, this is the latest in what promises to be another strange month of transfer rumours. According to the Sunday People, Arsene Wenger is keen to at least try and lure the Spaniard to the Emirates, should his attempts to sign Wayne Rooney or Gonzalo Higuain fail. It is believed Jose Mourinho has stamped his authority at Chelsea by only assuring five players of a starting position next season and it turns out Torres isn't one of them. That's given Wenger added impetus to pursue the Blues striker and while it is unlikely Torres and Rooney would line up alongside one another next year, Arsenal are toying with the idea of having Torres and Higuain as strike partners. It seems the world's a stage at Manchester City and potential signings are flying in from all corners of the globe. David Moyes recently took over as the new manager of Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson ended his 26-year reign at Old Trafford. With Jose Mourinho having returned to Chelsea, Manchester City expected to go about their usual business and Arsenal and Tottenham also expected to invest in their squads, the new United boss has a crucial summer ahead of him. Before deciding whom to bring in, he must first deal with his own player's issues. Wayne Rooney demanded a transfer before the retirement of Sir Alex, and has recently expressed his desire to play as a forward. This is a difficult question for Moyes as Robin Van Persie has established himself well in the position. The Dutchman bagged 26 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season and has been the league's top scorer for two consecutive seasons. United have adjusted their tactics from two to one striker and this brought them the league trophy. Moyes may have to change the tactics again in order to keep his star- man, but will he do so? 2010- Despite a solid start to the campaign, United’s 2009/10 contained a sting in the tail as Chelsea’s late surge for the line curtailed the Reds’ chances of winning a fourth successive title by a single point in a race which ran until the final day of the season. There was some solace to be found in the retention of the Carling Cup, achieved at Aston Villa’s expense and secured by a late winner from Wayne Rooney, whose individual excellence was rewarded with both the PFA Player’s Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards. Despite that single piece of silverware, the 2009/10 campaign was most notable for the heightened stakes of the Manchester Derby, with mind-boggling investment inflating the ambition of Manchester City and putting them in the frame for honours. United’s local authority was exerted, however, with home and away Premier League wins and a Carling Cup semi-final triumph, with each victory dramatically procured in injury-time. Both Manchester clubs wer ...
