Premier League FLASHBACK It was back in 1992 when the top division in English football broke away from the rest of the league to form the inaugural FA Carling Premier League. During that first season, the number of clubs in the new league was still 22 – just as it had been in the old First Division. But in 1995 the number was reduced to 20. Here's how the table looked almost exactly 22 years ago on 21 November 1992 (number of points shown in brackets): 1 Norwich City (33) 2 Arsenal (29) 3 Aston Villa (28) 4 Blackburn Rovers (27) 5 Queens Park Rangers (26) 6 Manchester City (25) 7 Chelsea (25) 8 Manchester United (24) 9 Coventry City (23) 10 Ipswich Town (22) 11 Middlesbrough (21) 12 Leeds United (21) 13 Liverpool (19) 14 Sheffield Wednesday (19) 15 Tottenham Hotspur (19) 16 Sheffield United (17) 17 Everton (16) 18 Southampton (15) 19 Oldham Athletic (15) 20 Wimbledon (14) 21 Crystal Palace (12) 22 Nottingham Forest (11)

[SPOTLIGHT ON CITY, FALCAO AND BALOTELLI] - Just a month into the season, Manchester City is already facing a game of huge significance in the defense of its Premier League title. If City loses at home to early leader Chelsea on Sunday, the champions will be eight points behind their biggest rivals for the championship after five matches. And that will be a sizeable gap considering the strength of the squad that Jose Mourinho has built for this season. Buoyed by a 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers last weekend, Manchester United's line-up of all-star attackers heads to another promoted club, Leicester, with Radamel Falcao in line for a first start. Scoring goals may not be enough for Mario Balotelli to be the new crowd favourite at Liverpool. The Italy striker ended his wait for a goal for his new club by scoring in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League. But manager Brendan Rodgers says Balotelli must dovetail scoring with a relentless work rate, like Luis Suarez did during his ...

Diego Costa maintains his residence in the heroes column with a hat trick versus Swansea City, while Queens Park Rangers' entire defence earns villain status for a woeful display in a 4-0 loss to Manchester United. HEROES Jack Wilshere's recent performances with Arsenal had brought savage criticism not just from journalists but also from ex-players like Paul Scholes and Tony Adams. After this weekend, everyone now knows why. His display for Arsenal against Manchester City -- powerful, aggressive, incisive and ruthless -- was a reminder of why people were so excited when he broke through in 2008. Wilshere has it in him to dominate the biggest games, to lead his club and his country by example, but he hasn't done it often enough. Saturday's game was his best in months. You shut your critics up by playing like that, not by pleading with them to shut up. Chelsea's Diego Costa might as well just set up camp in this section. Until he gets injured or suspended, he's not going anywhere. Like Cesc Fabregas, also d ...

Zabaleta: We're hungry for the title (PA) Monday 28 April 2014 Share Pablo Zabaleta has tipped Manchester City to swipe the English Premier League title in the season's final seconds, just as they did in 2012. Two added-time goals sent the title to the Etihad Stadium two years ago, as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero salvaged a 3-2 home victory over Queens Park Rangers. It meant City claimed their first top flight title since 1968 on goal difference, and after Sunday's unflinching 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, Zabaleta believes Manuel Pellegrini's men are ready for a repeat of 2012. "We know that we've been in this situation two years ago and I think we had been talking about that last week," said Zabaleta, well aware City could now be crowned champions on goal-difference once again. "The most important thing we've learned from that experience was the team spirit to keep fighting until the end. "Whoever ends as the champions, it is because they will deserve it, and we are one of those teams who will fight for it ...

Manchester City vs Queens Park Rangers 3-2 Highlights 13.05.2012 all goals copyright by SteaL (me)
Manchester City showed a tactical naivety heading into their home clash against fellow Premier League challenging Chelsea on Monday, February 3 at the Etihad Stadium as they played 'right into Jose Mourinho's hands'. That is the view of Joey Barton, 31, a defensive shield currently employed by Queens Park Rangers and formerly of Newcastle United and City, who added that Mourinho's utilisation of a counter-attack policy, combined with the superb displays returned by Nemanja Matic, David Luiz and Eden Hazard, were the differences in what was a convincing win for Chelsea, who now have amassed the same points haul as the side they defeated last night. Defender Branislav Ivanovic struck the game's sole goal - a powerful first half shot struck from outside the box with his weaker foot and Chelsea even threatened throughout the second half to double their lead. There was an emerging opinion in the press that Mourinho may adopt precisely the same tactic he so abhorred West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce using ag . ...

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes is lining up an audacious move for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Adel Taarabt. The Morocco international spent a year under Hughes at Loftus Road, and the new Potters chief is a known admirer of his talents. Hughes has been told to change the current long-ball style of football at the Britannia Stadium – and wants Taarabt to spearhead his new fluid game. The star has also been linked with a number of Europe’s big hitters – with AC Milan and Manchester United both credited with an interest. But ex-Manchester City manager Hughes is now weighing up a swoop of his own. QPR’s relegation has seen a number of players made available for transfer – with Loic Remy and Christopher Samba also set to leave. Taarabt is also on the list, and he would jump at the chance to play Premier League football once more. The 24-year-old, who scored five goals in 31 Premier League appearances last term, is valued at around £7 million by the Loftus Road outfit. However, his asking price could ...
Top 10 richest football club owners in world Roman Abramovich produced a brand new wave of filthy-wealthy club proprietors in world football as he required over Chelsea in 2003. Since that time he’s been surpassed by people like the Manchester City owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, yet others. Oddly enough enough, two biggest clubs on the planet, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are fan-possessed. These proprietors might not be the singular person responsible for their club, and perhaps they might co-possess a club or perhaps be most investor. With this list we will pass the internet worth of the several proprietors. Listed here are the ten richest football club owners in world. 1.Manchester City: Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan 2. The brother of Shaun Wright-Phillips has hinted that the winger would be prepared to remain with Queens Park Rangers, despite their relegation to the Championship. Recent reports had claimed that the Former England international would be keen to stay in the Premier League next season. However his younger sibling Bradley, who plays for Charlton Athletic, has insisted that Shaun is "happy" at Loftus Road. "When I spoke to him he said he loves it at QPR. He's got loads of friends there and still has two years left on his contract. He's happy there," he is quoted as saying by the Fulham Chronicle. Shaun joined the R's from Manchester City in the summer of 2011.
Stoke City supporters’ club chief Bryan Shaw has expressed his discontent at the potential managerial appointment of ex-Manchester City boss Mark Hughes. The Potters are believed to be close to naming Hughes as the successor to Tony Pulis – who left the Britannia Stadium last week. But Shaw, who is head of the Stoke branch of the supporters' club, has revealed his disappointment at the potential appointment. Speaking exclusively to SportsDirect News, he said: “He wasn’t my first choice and I don’t think he’d be many people’s first choice. “When you think of his record you think of Queens Park Rangers and City, where he spent a lot of money and achieved very little. “But, saying that, not many people wanted Pulis when he returned to the club [in 2006] and he won the detractors round. “However, he lost supporters last season because he was playing people out of position, the results weren’t great and it looked like he was putting round pegs in square holes. “And we’ve got the same ...

LONDON, Feb 24 (Reuters) - AC Milan's surge up the Serie A table was slowed by a 1-1 derby draw with Inter Milan while Paris St Germain and substitute David Beckham won the big match in France as the leaders beat Olympique Marseille 2-0. The runaway leaders in Spain, England and Germany all secured victories with Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich now in sight of their respective titles. ENGLAND Manchester United remained 12 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after both teams recorded comfortable 2-0 victories over the weekend. United not home and dry yet - Fergie 24 Feb 2013 12:57:08 Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says the Premier League title race is far from over despite seeing his side move 15 points clear of Manchester City after a 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers. With 11 games remaining, and City due to face third-place Chelsea on Sunday, Ferguson's side are in a dominant position, but the manager refused to declare his side to be champions-elect. "We're in a better position today (Saturday) than we were yesterday," he said. "It's one game less and it's really important and the way we can approach it is by winning the next game and then trying to win the next game and seeing where it takes us." Rafael da Silva set United on course for victory at QPR with an outstanding opening goal before Ryan Giggs marked his 999th appearance in senior football with the second 10 minutes from time. Ferguson praised the contribution of Rafael, the young Brazilian full-back, who is emerging as a key figure in the league leaders' lin ...

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp remains optimistic that his struggling side could pick up a surprise result against Premier League leaders Manchester United this weekend. - Blog: Queens Park Rangers blog QPR face United at Loftus Road on Saturday with the club bottom of the table and seven points adrift of safety following their 4-1 loss against Swansea City. Redknapp, though, is hopeful of securing a positive result, with the Englishman highlighting January's unlikely win at Chelsea and also the draws achieved versus Tottenham and Manchester City. "You can't predict results," Redknapp told the Fulham Chronicle. "We're playing Chelsea away on the back of being smashed to pieces by Liverpool. What's the score going to be you might ask? 3-0, and 4-0 to them? I was surprised as you were. "We then play Tottenham at home who've beaten everybody away and have scored in all away games - and they don't score against us. "Against Man City who are champions, we get another great point and then another at ...
Managerial league table 2012-13: Who leads the way?   Ever wondered how your favourite football club's boss would fare in a league table of managers? Has changing the man in charge made a difference to their fortunes this season?   A study by BBC Sport has analysed the number of points returned per game from each full-time managerial spell since the start of the season.   And while the top man, Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson, may come as little surprise, there are some intriguing results elsewhere.   The successful reunion between Eddie Howe and Bournemouth accounts for second spot on the table. Malky Mackay, who has guided Cardiff to the top of the Championship, is next in the manager's list ahead of Manchester City's Roberto Mancini.   At the opposite end of the table, Mark Robson's spell at Barnet, where he collected just three points from 11 matches is the worst managerial spell this season and he is the only manager below Queens Park Rangers' former boss Mark Hughes.   The table also ...

THE post-Mario Balotelli era at Manchester City began in lacklustre fashion as it was held to a 0-0 draw at Queens Park Rangers today that prevented it from making up ground on Manchester United. Victory for City would have cut United's lead to just two points, but instead Alex Ferguson's side will tackle Southampton tomorrow with an opportunity to re-open a seven-point lead at the English Premier League summit. The troublesome Italian striker is expected to complete a switch to AC Milan tomorrow, and City could have done with some extra firepower at Loftus Road. An injury to Vincent Kompany obliged the champion to start with Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia at centre-back, but it began with both Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero in attack as they sought to exploit bottom club QPR's defensive frailties. Joleon Lescott blazed an early chance over the crossbar from close range, while Pablo Zabaleta headed against the bar from a David Silva cross and Aguero had a goal ruled out for offside.
It is sort of hard to believe we are having this conversation. Just shy of two-thirds through the Premier League schedule, Manchester City has conceded the fewest goals in the league. The total of 19 goals they have conceded is five better than their nearest competitor, Chelsea, and it is less than a goal against per match. City has played 24 matches and lost twice. Every other Premier League club has lost at least three times, table-topping Manchester United included. Despite it all, City is seven points back of United and the likelihood of the Citizens defending their Premier League title lessens with each passing punchless draw. The recent 0-0 failure at Loftus Road against the worst side in the Prem, Queens Park Rangers, dealt another rocking shot to City's championship aspirations. What in the Colin Bell End is going on here? You Play to Win the Game Manchester City is drawing itself into second place. It is not the two losses (home to Manchester United, away to Sunderland) that have placed City so f ...
LONDON: Manchester City started what seems certain to be life without Mario Balotelli with a frustrating goalless draw at Premier League bottom club Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday.   Balotelli was missing as he concluded the details of his move to AC Milan after City had accepted the Italian club's reported £19 million offer for the striker earlier in the day.   And without the controversial forward, Roberto Mancini's champions missed out on the chance to close the gap on leaders Manchester United to two points.   But the draw left QPR within four points of safety.Balotelli's departure this month has been predicted for some time and the Italy international has been out of favour with Mancini, scoring just one league goal this season.   But the 22-year-old's unpredictable talents might just have made the difference in a stalemate at Loftus Road that will give west London club QPR hope they can avoid relegation. Harry Redknapp's side remain unbeaten in the league since the turn of the year -- although ...

Harry Redknapp looks set to solve some of his central defensive issues, as Queens Park Rangers chase a deal for Porto defender Rolando. With Ryan Nelsen now set to depart for Toronto FC after Tuesday's match against Manchester City and the club already lacking in that area, Redknapp has been working hard to bring in the right centre-half since arriving at the club. Rolando, 27, has won 18 caps for Portugal and has attracted interest from a number of Serie A clubs. He has also told Porto that he wants to leave. As such, it is understood that the Superliga club's financial director met QPR representatives on Wednesday night to discuss terms. Rolando himself, however, is still unsure of whether he wants a move to England or Italy. Redknapp still has around £12 million to spend in this window and retains an interest in Blackburn Rovers' Martin Olsson, despite seeing a bid for the defender rejected earlier this month, as well as the Swede's team-mate, Scott Dann. QPR have also been weighing up whether to take ...

January 11, 2013 Stoke v. Chelsea Preview (Sky Sports) Tony PullisStoke will feel that they are entertaining Chelsea at a good time, with the Blues having wobbled of late. The Potters came unstuck in their last Premier League outing, against Manchester City, but that was their first setback in 11 matches. The consistency displayed by Tony Pulis' side has them sat inside the top 10, but 11 draws have prevented them from pushing into the pack chasing European qualification. A morale-boosting victory over Chelsea could see them back in that particular hunt, though, and Stoke have yet to taste defeat in front of their own supporters this season. Rafa Benitez will be all too aware of that fact when he takes his troops to the Britannia Stadium. Chelsea suffered a painful Capital One Cup defeat to Swansea in midweek, while they also came unstuck in their last top flight outing - against Queens Park Rangers. Alan Pardew: We've got to go and attack Man City by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle Alan Pardew will make his feelings crystal clear to his players this week as he looks to address Newcastle United's alarming form. The Toon boss has demanded a response from his troops after a worrying run of just one win from the last 10 games. And although the next two fixtures are against wounded Premier League champions Manchester City - still reeling from their last-gasp 3-2 derby loss against Man United - and then recovering Queens Park Rangers, who have been boosted by the appointment of Harry Redknapp, Pardew is still bravely targeting six points from the next two games. Pardew will have home advantage on his side as well as influential playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa fully fit after he emerged unscathed from the 2-1 loss at Fulham. But while Pardew has laid off his players during the poor run of form this season, he was quite rightly feeling let down by the sloppy defending which led to Hugo Rodagella's winner at Craven Cot ...

Harry Redknapp watched from the stands as Manchester United came from behind to beat his new Queens Park Rangers side at Old Trafford. QPR, who announced Redknapp as their new boss on Saturday morning, led when Jamie Mackie pounced from close range. Headers from Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher, on his first league start for over a year, put United in command. Substitute Javier Hernandez stroked in the third as Sir Alex Ferguson's men moved top of the Premier League table. United's three goals in the space of eight second-half minutes puts the pressure firmly back on neighbours Manchester City, who know they can return to the summit by beating Chelsea on Sunday. QPR, who sacked Redknapp's predecessor Mark Hughes on Friday, stay bottom of the table as they remain without a victory in their opening 13 matches. But there will be plenty of positives for Redknapp to take from the match before he assumes control on Monday. Under the guidance of Hughes's former coaches Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki, the hard-w ...
WAYNE TARGETS RETURN TO THE TOP Wayne Rooney is seeking a winning comeback with Manchester United against Queens Park Rangers after missing two consecutive defeats in the last seven days. The Reds striker missed last Saturday's trip to Norwich City with tonsillitis and while he might have been rested from Tuesday's game against Galatasaray anyway, with Champions League progress already assured, he admits the second loss was also hard to take. "We were still disappointed to lose the game, even though we’d already qualified in the Champions League as group winners," Wayne said on Friday. "Obviously last week [at Norwich] was a massive disappointment for us. After losing that one, this QPR game couldn’t have come quickly enough. We’re looking to get back out there in the league and try and get the three points." Rooney acknowledges the extra incentive provided by this weekend's order of fixtures, with current league leaders Manchester City not playing until Sunday when they meet Chelsea. "If we can get ...

City forced to wait for Aguero scan results LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will know in a couple of days whether the knee injury sustained in the opening 3-2 Premier League win at home to Southampton on Sunday is serious. The Argentine striker, whose last-gasp goal against Queens Park Rangers sealed the title for City in dramatic fashion back in May, was carried off on a stretcher after 13 minutes. City's top goalscorer last season looked in severe pain after a tackle before getting to his feet and then dropping to the floor again. "I think we need to wait two days for the scan," City manager Roberto Mancini told Sky Sports. Any long-term absence for Aguero would be particularly agonising for City having missed out on striker Robin Van Persie, who opted for Manchester United after leaving Arsenal. A dip into the market with two weeks left in the transfer window is always possible for the club, although City proved they have goals throughout the team in the comeback win over promo ...
Alex Ferguson will lead Manchester United into the Premier League season facing arguably his biggest threat after 20 years of supremacy in English football - crosstown rivals Manchester City. Man United were two minutes away from having their name engraved on the Premier League trophy for the 13th time last season before City miraculously scored twice in added time against Queens Park Rangers to win the title on goal difference. Can United reclaim the league title this season?
In the end it took just one goal to make Manchester City champions last season for the first time in 44 years. After spending almost £250m on players whose job it was to put the ball in the net, City stumbled over the line - scoring against Queens Park Rangers in injury time - to beat their great rivals Manchester United not on points, but simply because they had scored more goals. It wasn't a situation Sir Alex Ferguson was prepared to let slide. The United manager immediately set his sights on the Premier League's top scorer, Robin Van Persie. Not only to add potency and pace to United's forward line, but to show he simply wouldn't allow City to have everything their own way, on or off the pitch. "In recent years if City have wanted someone they've got him," United legend Gary Pallister told BBC Sport. "The move for Robin Van Persie shows not only can United still compete with City's vast wealth, but they can attract players away from City because of everything the club and the manager stands for. "Van ...

Sir Alex ready to respond Sir Alex Ferguson is still smarting from Sunday's agonising title defeat to Manchester City but has warned that United will respond next season. In a passionate declaration of intent, the manager told MUTV that the Reds will continue investing in young players who will continue to form the character of the club. The manner in which United lost the crown to neighbours City may hurt but he retains faith in old heads like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and will be adding to the squad this summer. "Obviously we knew QPR were in front," he admitted. "I said to Mike Phelan, ‘If City equalise, I’m worried they’ll get a big impetus from it.’ And that’s exactly what happened. I think everyone expected City to win and they made it difficult for themselves. Queens Park Rangers performed very well until they knew they were safe. That was disappointing. It’s hard to digest because we played so well at Sunderland. Their keeper made four fantastic saves, we’ve hit the post twice, hit ...

WOW!!! Can you believe how Manchester City beat the Queens Park Rangers in the last minute to win the English Premier League soccer title???
Extracted This time it was a case of their title hopes turning, eventually, to dust. In-between came early resignation, then mild optimism followed by a surge of hope so tantalising that everyone felt Ferguson really had one hand back on the Premier League trophy. Finally, 13 seconds after the final whistle blew, the cruellest of synchronicities saw the prize snatched away. Manchester City had recovered from being 2-1 down to register a stoppagetime 3-2 victory against Queens Park Rangers.

So I've reflected and rewatched the ending of the Manchester City game today like 15 times... I'm trying to think of my greatest finishes that I've seen live like that and where they rank. I guess I haven't reflected yet because I don't know... What's everyone's list. Here's my preliminary in no order Manchester City 3-2 Queens Park Rangers (Today) Landon Donovan's Goal Heard Round the World Aaron Boone's Walk-off in ALCS Game 7 MLB Season Finale last year/World Series Game 6 Little League World Series US Semifinals 2003 (awesome!) Rams-Titans Super Bowl Both final seconds Giants Super Bowls Lakers-Trailblazers Game 7 in Conference Finals March Madness (any year really...only Duke championships resonate with me though) USA-Canada Gold Medal Game 2010 Michael Phelps with that fingertip win in the butterfly? Probably just witnessed the most dramatic finish I have ever seen in my lifetime! Congratulations to Manchester City and what a valient effort by Queens Park Rangers. What a Premier League finish.
What a marvelous finish to the EPL season... I don't even care that Chelsea is sixth There is no drama like English Football "But with injury time already two minutes deep there wasn’t enough time. Or was there? As QPR’s (Queens Park Rangers) bench started to celebrate their own survival (from relegation) with Stoke and Bolton having ended 2-2, Manchester City mounted one final desperate attack. Like so many others before, it looked set to crack in the face of QPR’s defensive wall. But then Mario Balotelli, a pariah just a few weeks ago after fighting with teammates and earning a lengthy suspension for being sent off at Arsenal, redeemed himself. The young Italian, lying prone on the turf after colliding with a defender, still managed to stick out a foot and clip the ball into the path of Aguero, the brilliant Argentinean striker and son-in-law of Diego Maradona. Aguero had scored 21 league goals during the season but he may never hit a more meaningful one than the moment when he kept his nerve, be ...

Football Forever... English Premier League: SO IT comes down to this... Manchester City will face potentially relegated Queens Park Rangers at the Ethiad Stadium in what appears to be an easy win. The title that Manchester City will win on Sunday will be deservedly remembered for years to come. Is this the end of an era for Manchester United? How long will Manchester City rule the EPL? Will we ever see big clubs like Arsenal or Chelsea get back into a position where they can dominate the league?
Joleon Lescott has claimed that Manchester City will not be underestimating Queens Park Rangers when they face them on Sunday.

Bolton has 35 points and sits just above Blackburn which has joined Wolves in relegation. To stand any chance of avoiding the drop, they MUST win. Queens Park Rangers are two points better than Bolton but face the Manchester City machine in a game that they MUST NOT lose - to be assured of Premiership football next season. While City need to hold their nerves, Man U must be good enough to take advantage of any slip up. The title is still up in the air, folks. Where will it come to rest: the Blue half of Manchester or the Red Devils half? I cannot help but salivate as I wait for Super Saturday. Please come quickly!!!
