Lionel Messi is worth €87 million more than Cristiano Ronaldo , according to research within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) in Switzerland. The 27-year-old attacker has won four Ballons d'Or in his career so far and skippered Argentina to the World Cup final last year, winning the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the process. Like Ronaldo with Real Madrid, Messi has a contract with Barcelona until June 2018, although reports have been circulating in recent weeks that he might swap Camp Nou for Chelsea due to discontent in Catalunya. By Henry Winter, Football Correspondent Chelsea and Liverpool should progress confidently to the knockout stages of the Champions League, Arsenal will believe they can follow despite a couple of daunting away assignments while Manchester City were given their usual assault course but should still survive. Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City v Bayern Munich and Chelsea against Schalke: so we meet again. UEFA’s Financial Fair Play laws have changed the beautiful game forever. Introducing rules that dictate transfer spend must be in proportion to profit and loss, the days of exuberant billionaires pumping personal fortunes into Premier League clubs will soon be behind us. Evidence thus far is perhaps yet to suggest this. Real Madrid forked out £87million on a single player, Gareth Bale, only last summer, and Manchester City were only too happy to accept their recent £49million fine from UEFA for breaching FFP. To Sheik royalty, that’s not even loose change. But do not be fooled. The rules of the transfer game, especially in the Premier League, have changed significantly. Although England’s top clubs will continue to spend as lavishly as before, every lucrative acquisition must be offset by an almost as lucrative departure. And of all Premier League clubs, it’s currently Chelsea who are showing their ability to adapt. Whilst title rivals City have felt UEFA’s bite, or at least a slightly vicious ...

After reassuring fans following the sale of Gareth Bale last summer, Levy sacked manager Andre Villas-Boas and replaced him with Tim Sherwood and Tottenham have since been thrashed by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City and beaten twice by arch-rivals Arsenal. Five problems facing Spurs By SAPA London – Tottenham Hotspur are looking to appoint a sixth permanent manager since 2004 after sacking Portuguese Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas on Monday. Spurs have been beaten 5-0 by Liverpool and 6-0 by Manchester City in the last month, leaving them seventh in the Premier League table and compromising hopes of a top-four finish. Here are some of the most pressing issues awaiting attention in the in-tray of Villas-Boas's successor. 1 Sharpen the attack Spurs ceded last season's 26-goal top scorer Gareth Bale to Real Madrid during the close season, but their loss of potency in attack has nonetheless been alarming. Despite lavishing around £70 million on attacking players Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli, Spurs have scored only 15 goals in 16 league games. Soldado, a £26 million acquisition from Valencia, has only scored four times in the league, with Jermain Defoe reduced to a bit-part role despite being the top goal-scorer in the Europ ...

Gerardo Martino's side are level with Atletico on 40 points following the Madrid club's 2-0 win at promoted Elche. Real Madrid, whose 4-0 drubbing of Real Valladolid at the Bernabeu included a hat-trick from record signing Gareth Bale, are three behind in third, with Bilbao fourth on 29 points thanks to their first La Liga win against Barca since May 2006. ENGLAND Arsenal maintained their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League with victory at Cardiff City, but the top three now has a more familiar feel after Chelsea and Manchester City both won to stay in pursuit. White Hart Pain! How AVB's £107m Spurs dream team is turning into a NIGHTMARE High up in the boardroom suite at the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and director of football Franco Baldini were deep in discussion. Nobody quite knew where to look. The intimate old boardroom at Manchester City was ripped out over the summer in favour of an open-plan affair for around 200 well-heeled guests. Now everybody gets to gawp at the misery of the visitors: officials from Newcastle, Hull, Manchester United, Wigan, Everton, Norwich and Spurs have all experienced the insincere, sympathetic smiles this season. Somehow — with their team pasted 6-0 by City — Levy, Baldini and the rest of the Spurs contingent retained their dignity. Inside, they were ready to explode. This was the season they were meant to keep City, United, Arsenal and the rest within reach. Instead, they are ninth in the Premier League, eight points behind their North London rivals. To add to the executive frustration, there is discont ...

Madrid's midfield is currently being dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, with Angel Di Maria a popular substitute choice. Isco has been an unused subs in Real's last two matches; the 3-2 La Liga win over Rayo Vallecano and, more recently and ominously, the crucial Champions League victory over Juventus. The 21-year-old Spain midfielder came to prominence at Malaga over two seasons when he was coached by Manuel Pellegrini who is now manager at Manchester City and Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer and proved with the capture of Mesut Ozil that he is happy to splash the cash on the right talent. He offered the insight in a monthly question-and-answer session with supporters in Chelsea magazine. And his assessment of six teams, including his own, with the likeliest champion credentials illustrated where he believes the danger lies. Mourinho called the Manchester City players at the disposal of Manuel Pellegrini ‘incredible’ but that Spurs’ ability to splurge more than £100million after the sale of Gareth Bale has given Andre Villas-Boas an embarrassment of riches. Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been linked, which is a ...

Real Madrid need help from Man City in chase for £60 million man? In a poll run by Spanish sports media giant Marca.com, nearly 200,000 fans voted to pick their most-wanted player from suggestions in the categories of attack and midfield. Don't see this happening myself RS Liverpool are being mentioned everywhere in the European transfer market at the moment, but unfortunately that's mainly associated with a certain player's reported desire to leave the football club. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Luis Suarez is desperate to get out of Merseyside for the sake of his family who can no longer stand living as almost prisoners in their own home. AS lay it on pretty thick, and make Liverpool sound like some extended dungeon. The other Madrid based sport newspaper, Marca, has a bit of better news for fans of the Merseyside club. They have no big Suarez scoop, focusing on Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, but do say several pages in, that Brendan Rodgers is about to make his move for Jesus Navas of Sevilla. The Spanish club are skint and a sale is likely but Manchester City have been mentioned previously, and are again in this article, but Marca reckon Liverpool stand a decent chance to get him ahead of their Premier League rivals. Bale to move to Real for €70 million? Real Madrid wants to tie up a deal for Gareth Bale sooner rather than later. This explains why British paper The Daily Mirror is reporting that 'Los Blancos' are readying a whopping €70 million bid for the Welsh international. The same newspaper's website also claims that Real is willing to hand Bale a 5-year contract worth over €11 million a year. José Mourinho's side isn't the only club in Europe chasing Bale, with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Barcelona all being touted as possible destinations. Indeed, the 'Azulgrana' defender Gerard Piqué recently spoke to the BBC about the Spurs star, calling him "an unbelievable player with all the conditions to play in the team that he wants to". Although the centre-back admitted that Bale's pace and power make him a good "fit" for Real Madrid, he also argued that the Welshman could "play here [at Barcelona] too, definitely". Bale has become one of the hottest properties in Europe following a sensational ca ...

Tottenham superstar Gareth Bale is not only the club’s pivotal player on the pitch but also crucial to chairman Daniel Levy’s ambition of securing a minimum £20million-a-year shirt sponsorship contract next season. The demanding Levy has commanded his commercial department to get a kit deal that puts Tottenham in the top-money tier along with Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea. Tottenham believe their media exposure alone makes them one of the top six clubs. But Spurs attracting that sort of deal will depend to a significant extent on Bale remaining at White Hart Lane. The Welshman is the club’s best-paid player on around £110,000 a week, with three more seasons on his contract. However, such is his form, Tottenham might have to re-negotiate that in the summer to guarantee he stays, though Levy’s strategy is that the club’s wage bill should not exceed 70 per cent of turnover. Tottenham’s kit suppliers Under Armour, who have entered the boot market, are also k ...

Top four is still possible if Liverpool FC cut out sloppy errors. THERE were loads of positives to take from two really tough away games but I’m gutted that Liverpool FC don’t have more to show for those performances. We could have picked up six points but ended up with just two after conceding leads against both Arsenal and Manchester City. I’m convinced we’re moving in the right direction but we still lack that ruthless streak. Individual errors have cost us massively this season and it was the same at the Etihad. But there are real signs of improvement and I’m optimistic about the rest of the season. Steven Gerrard is right in saying that fourth place is still a realistic target. Those people who write us off don’t know anything about football. Liverpool produced the greatest comeback in history back in 2005 and making up nine points on Tottenham is certainly possible. Spurs have lost Jermain Defoe and if Gareth Bale got injured they would be in real trouble. The only games we’ve got left ...

Harry Redknapp must decide which of his new faces his thrusts into first-team action as he prepares to tackle Norwich at Loftus Road. Former captain Ryan Nelsen made his farewell appearance in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City in midweek, but the void he leaves in defence will be filled by the considerable presence of club-record signing Christopher Samba. Yun Suk-young could come into contention, while Jermaine Jenas and Andros Townsend add to Redknapp's midfield options following the deadline day departure of Alejandro Faurlin to Palermo on loan. Norwich boss Chris Hughton must decide whether to hand new signing Luciano Becchio a start against QPR or stick with the players on duty against Tottenham. The Canaries claimed only their second point from the last 21 available in the 1-1 draw with Spurs in midweek in a much-improved display when only Gareth Bale's superb late leveller denied them victory. Hughton's only other piece of January business was to bring in Sierra Leone forward Kei Kamara on loan fro ...
Messi shortlisted for Ballon d'Or 29 November 2012 Updated 15:37 GMT Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta have been named on a three-man shortlist for this year's Ballon d'Or prize, Fifa has announced. Messi, 25, has scored 82 goals this calendar year - just three short of the record set by Gerd Mueller in 1972. Real Madrid's former Manchester United player Ronaldo also makes the list, along with Barcelona's Iniesta. Pep Guardiola, Vicente del Bosque and Jose Mourinho are shortlisted for coach of the year. The winners will be announced on 7 January. Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, Britain's sole representative on the initial 23-man list, failed to make it through. His Old Trafford team-mate Robin Van Persie also missed the cut, as did Manchester City trio Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure. After 50 goals last season in La Liga - including breaking Barcelona's 60-year-old goalscoring record with a hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Granada in March - Messi is expected to win Fifa's pla ...
MATCH PREVIEW It was the final game of the 2000-01 season when Manchester United last lost at White Hart Lane in the league. After the defeat, Sir Alex Ferguson reiterated his decision to leave the club by the end of the following campaign. He's still there and another win at Spurs would take him a significant step towards a 13th Premier League title. This is one of the hardest games United have left to play. Tottenham are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions. They ended their 27-match winless run against United at Old Trafford in September and know that if they are to be regarded as genuine title challengers they need to beat the top six sides more regularly. They've already lost against Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City this season. Defensively, they're tighter under Andre Villas-Boas. Hugo Lloris has conceded just 11 goals in 12 league games - five of them at the Emirates! Gareth Bale can destroy any full-back. Jermain Defoe will poach goals, although they've been hard to ...
The 17-year-old had been linked with fellow Premiership clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in recent weeks, and fans of the south coast club were braced for another nurtured starlet to go the way of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into the arms of a big-money club.

Manchester United wants at least $32,304,000 for the Portugal winger, but Wenger is using the RVP deal to his advantage. Arsenal's Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will not be signing Senegal striker Demba Ba. Wenger though did not Deny anything about a possible loan for Thierry Henry. Henry is currently training with the Gunners during the MLS off season. Unsettled Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott is for sale this transfer window. Manchester City bought Lescott from Everton in 2010 for $38,764,800 and now are willing to accept an offer as low as $12,921,600. Everton are interested in the England international but Lescott's wage of $145,368 a week is too much for the Toffees. ALS News Martin O'Neill has singled out Gareth Bale as Spurs' danger man, but is determined not to let the Welshman ruin our christmas party. "He's an exceptional player. He has to be one of the best players in Europe and he's playing in a side that is full of confidence and full of goals. But we're in good shape after our win over Manchester City and we're really looking forward to the game. The fans were terrific in the game away at Southampton and against City and we'll have their backing tomorrow and the atmosphere they create can ony help us. Spurs will be very difficult opponents but so were Manchester City." "We're thrilled to have won the [City] game – it was a tough one but we created some great chances and could have won it with something in hand at the end," he explained. That's despite their manager saying we were lucky – I didn't see that at all. The result gives us great heart going into a difficult period. We've done very well to get points on the board pre-Christmas and on Boxing Day. ...

Emmanuel Adebayor went from Tottenham Hotspur's hero to zero against former club Arsenal as he scored and was then sent off in a dramatic 5-2 North London derby defeat. The Togolese striker, who angered Arsenal fans when leaving for Manchester City in 2009 before this summer making a permanent transfer to Spurs after an initial loan, set up a typically hectic meeting at Emirates Stadium with the opener. Adebayor's goal added to his lack of popularity among Gunners fans following his controversial celebration three years ago for City when scoring in his first reunion with his ex-employers and then his penalty goal in last season's ultimate repeat 5-2 defeat for Spurs. But his emotions got the better of him shortly after the quarter-hour mark on Saturday and his red card for a lunge on Santi Cazorla allowed Arsenal to come back and win through Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud, Cazorla and Theo Walcott despite Gareth Bale's consolation. Tottenham started well and, less than a minute after a Wi ...

Barcelona to employ Cesc tactics to beat Man City for Tottenham's Bale Barcelona are convinced Gareth Bale is ready to leave Tottenham this summer. Sport says Barca are prepared to compete with Manchester City for the Welsh ace and believe they can undercut the mega spending Premier League giants. Spurs want €50 million for Bale and Barca chiefs know another €10 million will be needed for agents to broker the deal - which is well outside their summer budget. City can certainly afford such an outlay, which will see Barca employ the same tactics that landed Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez from Udinese for lower than expected fees. Barca will seek talks with Bale's representatives to learn how serious he is about moving to Nou Camp ahead of chasing the big money at City. Should they receive encouragement, Barca will start to work on Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about lowering the price and doing right by Bale over his choice of destination. My Take Bale holds the ace here, what does his body ...
Manchester City are reportedly paying Yaya Toure £220,000-a-week but on recent showings, it isn't nearly enough. The man is like an enormous, turbo-charged chest of drawers, eating up turf like a planet-shaped Combine harvester. His two goals at the Athletic Indirect Stadium Arena pushed the noisy neighbours within spitting distance of their first title in 44 years and towards proof that money can buy you happiness. Toure is so devastating when switched into a more advanced role in the second half of vital matches it's a wonder Roberto Mancini doesn't start him there in the first place. City's oil-rich owners are so vastly wealthy, perhaps instead of signing Robin Van Persie or Gareth Bale, they should plough some cash into cloning Yaya, so one can play at either tip of the midfield diamond. His two goals brought the mood at Champions League-chasing Toon doon, much like a fart in a lift would. Fergie had been relying on the usual brilliance of Papiss Cisse, but unfortunately for him, the striker's well o ...
