Here's what Aitor Karanka had to say about our visit to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Arsene Wenger savoured a landmark away win for his side and said it gave Arsenal greater confidence ahead of a spell that could define the destiny of his team. The Gunners won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, recording their first away win against Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea since 2010. The victory, which was secured by goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, took Arsenal up to fifth and Wenger said in a news conference: "What is for sure is that it increases the level of belief and confidence. The five months in front of us are very important in the lifespan of the team. What you make of that will decide our season. "We looked in control away from home and we finally got a big win in a big game away from home. What is pleasing is that reinforces the belief of the team." Wenger, whose team conceded 17 goals in their three away games against the top three last season, praised his defence for keeping a clean sheet. He added: "We had a good solidarity level and good compactness. Sometimes, t ...

The Swansea City striker's representative says his client is only interested in moving to the Premier League champions with the transfer edging closer to completion The agent of Wilfried Bony, Francis Kacou, says a deal to take the Swansea City striker to Manchester City could be done in "a few days". The 26-year-old is Swansea's record signing after arriving from Vitesse Arnhem for €14 million in 2013 and ended 2014 as the top scorer in the Premier League for the calendar year with 20 goals. "Talks are going on and I really hope soon things will happen," Kacou told Sky Sports News. "There were rumours about other clubs, but at the moment it is City. Frank Lampard scores the winner as Manchester City edge 3-2 thriller against Sunderland Frank Lampard marked his extended stay at Manchester City with the winning goal as the Barclays Premier League champions completed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Sunderland to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea. The former England midfielder celebrated the renewal of his stay at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the season by rescuing hisManchester Citysidejust when they appeared to be on the verge of spurning a two-goal lead for the second time in consecutive league home matches. The second-half substitute guided a header from Gael Clichy's pinpoint 73rd-minute cross into the bottom corner for what proved to be the goal that took the wind out ofSunderland's sails. It capped a frantic period of five goals in the space of just over 16 minutes. Yaya Toure had clattered home a brilliant long-range strike to give City a 57th-minute lead and Stevan Jovetic slotted in an impudent flick, with Clichy the provider once more. B ...
New Year’s Day couldn’t have been any better for a football fan as all 20 teams from the Barclays Premier League were in action on 1January 2014. Manchester United were up against Stoke City while Liverpool entertained Leicester City. Southampton awaited Arsenal and Manchester City were in action against Sunderland. But the big clash of the day was at White Hart Lane between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. The day commenced at the Britannia Stadium where the Red Devils and Stoke played out a 1-1 draw. Radamel Falcao netted the equaliser after Ryan Shawcross had put the Potters into the lead within two first-half minutes. Peter Crouch struck the upright and at the end both sides had to settle for a point. Manchester City looked to return to winning ways and they were made to toil hard for the three points at the Etihad Stadium. Following a goalless first-half Yaya Toure and Stevan Jovetic scored to give the defending champions a two-goal advantage. But Sunderland managed to draw level thanks to two form ...
Manchester City 3-2 Sunderland: The key match stats In the first of BT Sport's two New Year's Day clashes, Frank Lampard's late header secured all three points for Manuel Pellegrini's side in their pursuit of leaders Chelsea Frank Lampard's header secured the points for Manchester City as they finally saw off Sunderland after the Black Cats fought back from 2-0 down at the Etihad Stadium. Yay Toure and Stevan Jovetic looked to given Manuel Pellegrini's side in control midway through the second half, but goals from Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson pegged them back. Eventually City's patience paid off, as they made 592 passes in the game in comparison to Sunderland's 279, with Lampard the man again in the right place to find the net.
Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton as their three-match winning run came to an end. Southampton took the lead on 17 minutes when Sadio Mane lifted the ball over Thibaut Courtois, but the Blues hit back through an excellent solo Eden Hazard goal in first-half stoppage time. The Blues pressed for a winner and Saints lost Morgan Schneiderlin to a second yellow card in the final minutes, but they held firm to frustrate Jose Mourinho's men. That result would have allowed Manchester City to close within a point of the Blues at the top of the table, but they threw away a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Burnley at the Etihad Stadium. David Silva opened the scoring as he swivelled in the box before slotting home, and Fernandinho doubled their advantage with a stunning strike from the edge of the area. However, Burnley hit back through George Boyd shortly after the start of the second half, and Ashley Barnes fired them level on 81 minutes as City's run of nine successive wins in all competitions came t ...
Premier League BETTING TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND *Man City vs CrystalPalace (Sat, 12.45pm) And up the form table Manuel Pellegrini’s men go. Manchester City have won their last 5 Premier League games to stay hot on the heels of leaders Chelsea, just three points behind, after claming maximum points in just 4 of the previous 9. Consecutive clean sheets against Everton, Roma and Leicester have added to an impressive run that’s not expected to stop against an out-of-sorts Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium. Neil Warnock’s side are struggling having won just 1 of their last 10 league games, and the same number on the road all season (at Everton). They’ve netted in only 2 of their last 5 matches away from Selhurst Park. Best bet: Man City have conceded just 18 goals in 26 Premier League home games under Pellegrini. In this form, and against an unconfident Palace, the win to nil at evens looks excellent. *Aston Villa vs Man United (Sat, 3pm) Aston Villa have won just 1 of their last 37 Premier League games ...

Paul Scholes has said Manchester United face the prospect of losing the best local talent to their rivals after Manchester City opened a state-of-the- art academy this week. Scholes, 40, was a member of the famous crop of youth talent that came through the United academy in the early 1990s, along with the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Gary Neville. Giggs had initially belonged to the City youth ranks before being persuaded to join United, but Scholes said in his column for The Independent that youngsters may now be more inclined to pursue a career at the Etihad Stadium. "When I was a kid, it was the case among the lads I played football with that if Manchester United wanted to sign you then joining Manchester City was not even a consideration," he wrote. "United did not have to persuade or offer inducements. We would have walked there ourselves. "Thirty years on, and the picture in Manchester is very different and, as a United fan, it worries me. Trying to look at it from a neutral perspective, I ...

Arsenal vs Manchester United Preview Scene-setter: After getting back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace before the international break, United will look to continue marching up the league table with an away win over traditional rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. With the chance to leapfrog the Gunners by beating them, Louis Van Gaal will be hoping to pile the pressure on the teams currently occupying the Champions League places. Form guide: Prior to the Crystal Palace result, United were on a three-game winless streak which included two draws against West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea and then a derby defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Head to head, the Reds can take confidence from having won 10 of the last 14 games against Arsenal in all competitions and losing only one – 1-0 at the Emirates on 1 May 2011, just prior to winning the league. Arsenal went into the club-football hiatus with a defeat away to Swansea, and although sitting a point above United, they too ...

City bottom of Group E with two games to go Toure sent off and will miss Bayern game Doumbia double as CSKA win for the first time in England City have won only one of their last five games Manchester City's Champions League campaign reached crisis point as they were beaten by CSKA Moscow on a desperate night at Etihad Stadium. Not only did they lose to two first-half goals from Seydou Doumbia, they also saw midfielders Fernandinho and Yaya Toure sent off after the break and ruled out of their next home game against Bayern Munich. Toure had equalised Doumbia's first goal but that was a rare high spot in a dismal performance by Manuel Pellegrini's side, who simply cannot solve the Champions League puzzle. City now have no wins and only two points from four group games, and must beat Bayern and win at Roma to stand any chance of progression. And on the evidence produced so far, it is hard to see a team that mysteriously looks so ill-at-ease in this tournament turning their performances around to produce the ...

Michael Carrick is prepared to play at centre-back to help alleviate Manchester United’s defensive problems. Carrick made his first appearance of the season at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday when he came off the bench to replace injured centre-back Marcos Rojo in United's 1-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester City. Argentina international Rojo dislocated his shoulder sliding in to make a challenge to add to manager Louis Van Gaal’s defensive concerns and may be missing for several weeks. Phil Jones could be out for an extended period with shin splints, while Jonny Evans has not played for over six weeks because of an ankle injury. To further add to Van Gaal’s problems, Chris Smalling must now serve a one-match ban after he was sent off for carelessly picking up two bookings in the derby defeat. But Carrick, who has featured in central defence before for the club, is happy to play out of position for the good of the team. "If I need to play there then fine I have not had a lot of football recently so I ...

England Under-21s striker Harry Kane continued his impressive goalscoring form for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with a free-kick winner against Aston Villa. The 21-year-old has been amongst the goals for both club and country so far this season and his appearance from the bench in the second half at Villa Park helped Spurs come back from behind to collect all three points, courtesy of Kane's first Premier League strike this campaign. Elsewhere, Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for Manchester City as they secured a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini criticised Chelsea's "small team" mentality and said they played like Stoke City during their tense 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Much like last season's masterful 1-0 win at the same venue, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho opted to play three midfielders to negate City's array of attacking players. Ramires replaced Oscar and started alongside Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas to counter the hosts midfield which contained powerhouse Yaya Toure, the creative David Silva and the energetic pair of James Milner and Fernandinho. Pellegrini, however, was critical of Chelsea's tactics after Frank Lampard rescued a late point for the champions against his former club following Andre Schuerrle's opener. "It is not a result that I want, not what we deserved but the game was very similar to the game against Stoke," the Chilean told the BBC. "Ten players defended their own half, they scored a counter attack and they continued to defend until the end. The result is not ...
Tuesday, September 23, 2014 - Frank Lampard may have returned to haunt his former employers, Chelsea, but we never knew his equalizing goal for Manchester City on Sunday would have deadly consequences miles away from the Etihad Stadium. Apparently, A Ugandan Chelsea fan died after watching Lampard score for City and deny Chelsea picking up a fifth consecutive Premier League win this season.
RUMOURS DOING THE ROUNDS IN TOMORROWS PAPERS Liverpool are ready to offer Joe Hart an escape-route from the Etihad Stadium next summer as Manchester City continue to delay talks about a new contract for the goalkeeper. The Mail on Sunday reports that the 27-year-old is growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of negotiations, having already entered the final two years of his current £100,000-a-week deal.
Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer Frank Lampard returned to haunt his old club with the late equaliser that gave Manchester City a point at Etihad Stadium. Lampard - on loan at City from New York City FC until January - wrote his name into Chelsea folklore with 211 goals in 648 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club. And he added another dramatic chapter ton his illustrious story when he slid home a strike with five minutes left after Andre Schurrle looked to have scored the goal that would have given Chelsea an eight-point advantage over the reigning Premier League champions. City will feel they deserved a point after battling back into contention following the second-half sending off of defender Pablo Zabaleta following a tussle with Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
This is why you let the football people do the football. Jose Mourinho did not recommend releasing Frank Lampard. The club made a decision. And the club was made to pay. Chelsea were heading for another important victory at the Etihad Stadium. There was five to go and they were closing the game down, as they had done for the other 85 minutes, shutting Manchester City out, frustrating them, blocking off every avenue of attack. The ball forward was speculative to say the least and was met by James Milner, squaring at full stretch on the volley. From this unlikely scenario, magic occurred. Frank Lampard arrived, late but perfectly synchronised as ever, and struck his shot past a defeating Thibaut Courtois. How many times had Chelsea's faithful seen him do that?

Manchester City midfielder David Silva acknowledged his side cannot afford to lose against Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea have made a blistering start to the season with four wins from as many matches, scoring 15 goals in the process. New signing Diego Costa has already bagged seven league goals - four more than any other player - and they sit five points clear of champions City ahead of the Etihad Stadium clash. And despite the early nature of the season, Silva is fully aware of the importance of avoiding defeat against Jose Mourinho's in-form men. Question: Who has a brighter chance of winning, Manchester City or Chelsea?

Rodwell in Man City warning Jack Rodwell has warned youngsters contemplating a switch to Manchester City that such a move is not always the best option. Last Updated: 09/08/14 at 11:27 Post Comment Jack Rodwell: Found regular football hard to come by at Manchester City The 23-year-old midfielder can speak from experience having recently contemplated a £10million move from the reigning Premier League champions to Sunderland. Rodwell spent two years at the Etihad Stadium, but saw first team opportunities limited by injuries and fierce competition for places. He admits he would now think twice about making a similar jump in the future and believes up-and-coming talents attracting interest from top flight heavyweights should put regular game time above personal gain when weighing up their options. Asked what advice he would give those being courted by City: “I would probably say don’t sign now, I’d say get as much football as you can. "The first thing I’d ask is, ‘how good are you?’ You just ne ...
Sagna: Why I quit Arsenal for Manchester City "I joined to win titles" says Frenchman New Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna has revealed his reasons for joining the club from Arsenal this summer. "Players are here to work and to win trophies," Sagna said."I was watching them (City) celebrating last season and I wanted to celebrate at the same time and win trophies, and the best way to do that is to work, to wake up every day and give the maximum effort". The Frenchman joined Kolo Toure, Gael Glichy, Emmanuel Adebayor and Samir Nasri, who all made the switch from the Emirates Stadium to the Etihad Stadium in recent years. Sagna is in line to make his competitive debut for City in Sunday's Community Shield, ironically against his former club. Sagna, though, insists it is "just another game".
How Manchester City could line up this season The English champions are looking to improve their fortunes in Europe this season with careful additions in the latest in our series looking at the Premier League's top six sides By Jamie Dunn Jul 24, 2014 14:00:00 After a season in which Manuel Pellegrini guided Manchester City to a Premier League title in his first season in charge, the champions can ill-afford to rest on their laurels this summer. The challenge now for Pellegrini and City is to compete on all fronts, with particular emphasis on becoming a genuine contender in the Champions League. And work has begun at the Etihad Stadium to strengthen the squad and provide competition of the highest calibre in every position. Willy Caballero is one such player who will do just that. A goalkeeper Pellegrini is extremely familiar with having worked with the Argentine during a successful spell at Malaga, the 32-year-old provides serious competition for Joe Hart and represents an upgrade on Costel Pantilimon, w ...

Sergio Aguero insists he is not tempted by a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid this summer and will stay at Manchester City next season. The two Spanish giants have been linked with a move for the former Atletico Madrid striker as they look to bolster their ranks this summer, but Aguero insists he has no intention of leaving the Etihad Stadium. He said: "There's lots of talk about Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's always the same every year, but the truth is that I'm going to stay at City. I'm very happy and I'm going to continue there." The 26-year-old Argentina international has been a huge hit at City since moving to England from Atletico in 2011, and has helped them win two Premier League titles in three years. Brendan Rodgers is said to be keen on strengthening his backline in the summer, as their defence was the main reason why they did not land a Premier League title And with rumours a few players are likely to depart, media reports have linked them with a stunning move for Mangala. The powerful centre back was subject of a bid from Manchester City in January, but it’s claimed that he is not interested in a switch to the Etihad Stadium. Joe Hart believes Premier League champions Manchester City have now established themselves as one of English football's superpowers. Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008 heralded a new era at the club, with global stars such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva being brought to the Etihad Stadium. And City's haul of two Premier League titles, the Fa Cup and the Capital One Cup in the last three years is evidence for Hart that they are now among the country's footballing elite.
Chelsea and Manchester City have tabled €35 million bids for Cesc Fabregas, Goal understands. The Premier League big-hitters have made identical moves for the Barcelona midfielder and now appear to be locked in a straight fight to sign him this summer. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admitted on Thursday that his club were closely monitoring the situation of Fabregas, who has been told he can leave the Nou Camp this summer. City also want to lure the 27-year-old back to the Premier League and have followed up their interest with a formal move amid growing uncertainty at the club over the future of Yaya Toure, who has made it clear he is not entirely happy at Etihad Stadium. But Arsenal have rejected the opportunity to match Chelsea and City's bids, and will not be re-signing their former captain this summer. Under the terms of the buy-back clause in Fabregas' Barcelona contract, the Catalan club had to inform Arsenal of any bid for the player and give them the opportunity to match it. Manager Arsene Wenge ...
Vincent Kompany believes Manchester City's recent success is just the start of a golden era and says there is a 'heart and soul' at the club which a lot of people overlook. City have spent heavily on new players since the takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan's Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, and have been rewarded with a string of trophies. The club's wealth has been a focus for critics but Kompany insists there is a much broader vision than short-term success at the Etihad Stadium and has highlighted just how they are building for the future. He told the Daily Telegraph: "I will say it loud and clear: at Manchester City, it is all about what you choose to look at. If you look at the money spent on players you will only ever see that side of City. "If you look at the bigger plan, which is investment in the community, facilities and youth teams, you realise there is heart and soul in this club. That is the reason why I am not shy to say this is a great club. The future is bright for Manchester Ci ...
Arsenal are believed to have been offered the chance to buy Mario Balotelli this summer with AC Milan keen to offload the erratic striker. The Italian giants are planning a squad overhaul during the transfer window, but need to raise funds in order to bring in fresh faces and Balotelli appears to be surplus to requirements at the San Siro. Milan are said to want around £30m for the Italian international, with QPR’s Adel Taarabt among the players the club want to bring in. Mario Balotelli has been offered to Arsenal Big-spending French side Monaco are believed to be the current favourites to land Balotelli, but he has also been offered to Arsenal, among other English sides, in a bid to drive the price up. The former Manchester City man scored 18 goals in 40 appearances for club and country last season, but Milan are thought to have become frustrated with his erratic behaviour, which was also a source of frustration for Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium.-Arsenal News-
Daniel Sturridge is grateful to Liverpool for giving him a chance to prove that he can be a prolific central striker. The England international burst onto the scene as a promising frontman at Manchester City, but took the opportunity to run down his contract the Etihad Stadium and move to Chelsea in 2009. An initial lack of opportunities forced him out on loan, with a spell at Bolton Wanderers showing that he could get goals at a Premier League level. Chelsea remained reluctant to deploy Sturridge down the middle, though, and he soon grew disillusioned with life on the flanks. A switch to Anfield in January 2013 offered him a clean slate, and the 24-year-old has responded with 35 goals in 49 games - a return he always believed he was capable of providing. Sturridge said in the Daily Telegraph ahead of his involvement at this summer's World Cup: "I've just been given the opportunity, and that's what I've asked for in the past. "That's what I've said, 'Give me that opportunity and then I can try to show wha ...
Southampton are considering a move for out-of-favour Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair. Despite uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino, the south coast club are keen to assemble a list of potential transfer targets for the forthcoming campaign. He moved to the Etihad Stadium from Swansea City in the summer of 2012, but made just two starts for the club in his first season, before moving to West Bromwich Albion on a year-long loan last August.
Yaya Toure risks further enraging Manchester City after admitting he wants to end his career at Barcelona and could leave the club this summer. The 31-year-old's future at the Etihad Stadium is shrouded in doubt after a bizarre episode on Tuesday when his agent Dimitry Seluk launched an inexplicable attack on the Premier League champions. The Ukrainian claimed Toure - who cost City £24million four years ago - was ready to leave after the club 'snubbed' his birthday last week.

Greater Manchester Police is investigating after a flare and a number of smoke bombs were set off following Manchester City FC's title win. At the conclusion of the Manchester City FC v West Ham FC fixture at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 11 May 2014, thousands of fans crossed the perimeter hoardings and stewards to gain access to the pitch. During the celebrations, at least two smoke bombs and a flare were lit, both of which have the potential to cause serious burns. Although there have been no reports of any injuries, Greater Manchester Police is working with the Club on an investigation to identify those responsible for setting off the bombs and flare. Officers will be reviewing CCTV and media footage to try and identify those responsible and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Zabaleta: We're hungry for the title (PA) Monday 28 April 2014 Share Pablo Zabaleta has tipped Manchester City to swipe the English Premier League title in the season's final seconds, just as they did in 2012. Two added-time goals sent the title to the Etihad Stadium two years ago, as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero salvaged a 3-2 home victory over Queens Park Rangers. It meant City claimed their first top flight title since 1968 on goal difference, and after Sunday's unflinching 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, Zabaleta believes Manuel Pellegrini's men are ready for a repeat of 2012. "We know that we've been in this situation two years ago and I think we had been talking about that last week," said Zabaleta, well aware City could now be crowned champions on goal-difference once again. "The most important thing we've learned from that experience was the team spirit to keep fighting until the end. "Whoever ends as the champions, it is because they will deserve it, and we are one of those teams who will fight for it ...

*Official Match Thread* Man City VS Sunderland Venue: Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England TIme 12:15 a.m Telecast Star Sports 4 HD 2 Manchester City suffered a tough defeat at the hands of Liverpool over the weekend, but they must bounce back quickly for one of their "games in hand" against Sunderland. The loss against Liverpool was a blow to City's title hopes, but they remain in the race if they can win out and get a little help along the way. First up is Sunderland, which is probably one of the better rebound opponents in the Premier League. While Yaya Touré will be out with an injury, Sergio Agüero is expected to start after making his return over the weekend as a substitute. Gus Poyet and Sunderland are quickly running out of time to avoid relegation to Championship. The Black Cats are winless in their last eight matches and have shown little to make anyone believe they can pull off a great escape. City, meanwhile, will see this as one of the games they absolutely have to win. Their schedule is mos ...
Peter Shilton believes England goalkeeper Joe Hart is not yet one of the world's elite, but has backed the Manchester City stopper to eventually reach the top bracket. The 26-year-old Hart will start this summer's World Cup in Brazil as Roy Hodgson's first-choice as the Three Lions look to navigate out of a difficult group which includes Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica. Hart started every one of England's qualifiers for the tournament, despite losing his place in the City side to Costel Pantilimon following a dip in form. England's record cap-holder and former captain Shilton lined up in goal for his country on 125 occasions, and believes those weeks spent on the bench at the Etihad Stadium prove Hart is not yet ready to be spoken of in the same breath as the likes of Germany's Manuel Neuer or Gianluigi Buffon of Italy. "I don't think he is quite at the top at the moment because he is still young and, as we have seen this season, he is prone to mistakes," Shilton told Press Association Sport. "At the moment ...

Familiar faces plotting Chelsea's title downfall The conventional wisdom before the season started was that the Premier League title was going to be fought over by Manchester City and Chelsea, with the Citizens as favourites to repeat their success of 2011-12. As the campaign has worn on and the clubs have accumulated points, that view has become even more entrenched given the annual spring decline of Arsenal's challenge and the disintegration of perennial champions Manchester United as a competitive force. Some insisted that the City squad was best equipped to take them to the Promised Land, while others had set their stall by Jose Mourinho's tactical nous, with both opinions bearing a certain amount of fruit over the past seven months. What nobody had seriously anticipated was that Liverpool would enter the last eight weeks of the season as serious contenders. While most Chelsea fans have been casting concerned glances toward the Etihad Stadium, one of their most hated rivals has crept up on the rails. ...
TOP TEN MOST RICHEST PLAYERS IN EPL There are some well known reports on who is the highest paid player in the Premier League as Wayne Rooney recently signed a colossal £300,000- a-week deal at Manchester United. Of course whilst earning high wages at a club does contribute towards overall wealth, footballers have several other avenues through which they can make money. So here are the 10 richest players currently plying their trade in the English top tier. 10. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City - £24m Arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2011 for a whopping £38m and is said to earn around £9.6m a year with the Citizens and is midway through a five- year deal with the club. Therefore this fortune is only set to go up - especially if the Argentine can score goals as important as the last minute winner that earned them the title in 2012. 9. Yaya Toure, Manchester City - £25m Aguero's City team-mate now and a midfielder who upon first arriving in England in 2009 from Barcelona was reported to be the highest pai ...

United's central midfielders look set to run into trouble against Yaya Toure but Robin van Persie's injury may have inadvertently given the hosts the tactical push needed to win In a season as awkward and inconsistent as Manchester United are enduring, two wins in a row feels like a serious milestone but, in searching for a third, they face a test significantly more difficult than Olympiakos and West Ham. The first serious on-pitch embarrassment of David Moyes's reign was at the hands of Manchester City, when Manuel Pellegrini's side tore apart a lethargic away team at the Etihad Stadium. With the Scot's future arguably riding on his ability to prevent this from becoming the latest in a series of aborted recoveries, a repeat of that 4-1 humiliation would be disastrous. City are not at home, however, where they have been at their most frighteningly dominant this season, and there is no question that, on paper, United have serious talent at their disposal. So is there a way for Moyes to take revenge? Deploy ...
This season may not have gone to plan at Old Trafford for David Moyes, but Tuesday night's Manchester Derby gives United the chance to restore some pride and claim the bragging rights until next season. But in order to do that, the champions will need to overcome a Manchester City side who have overwhelmed a host of Premier League sides this season. Manuel Pellegrini has enviable quality at his disposal in a number of areas and, as a result, the Etihad Stadium outfit dominate our combined Manchester Derby XI. Nevertheless, our goalkeeper comes from the red side of the Manchester divide. David de Gea has conceded more goals than Joe Hart this season, but has been called into action more often, featuring in more games and making more saves than the England No.1, who came in for scrutiny earlier in the seaso At right-back, the ever-dependable Pablo Zabaleta gets the nod ahead of Rafael after another season of consistent performances. The Argentine became one of the first names on the team sheet under Roberto ...
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that the squad are just as desperate to beat Manchester City as the Red Devils fans are. David Moyes's men were humiliated by their title-chasing rivals in the reverse fixture in September when Manuel Pellegrini's men beat them 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium but, after two consecutive victories for his side, the England international is eager to avenge that defeat. "We understand the fans and the result they want and for us as players it's exactly the same," he told The Sun. "I've been part of this club for a long time now and you know what means a lot. This is certainly one of them. "We'll go into the City game looking forward to it. It's obviously a tough game but it's a tough game for both teams." United have also been thrashed more recently by Liverpool, who won 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier in March, and Carrick admits that the pain of that defeat still lingers in the dressing room. "It was a bad day for us and we suffered just as much as the fans," he added ...
Manchester United manager David Moyes is not concerned about putting a dent in Manchester City's title bid in Tuesday's derby at Old Trafford. City head across Manchester trailing leaders Chelsea by six points, but with three games in hand and knowing their title destiny is in their own hands. Manuel Pellegrini's side thrashed United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season, with the reigning champions having been unable to mount a robust defence of their crown. Moyes also presided over a 3-0 home defeat by arch-rivals Liverpool last weekend and, while plans are in place for next season, the United boss is keen to improve his record against the Premier League's bigger teams. "We are building already, with my thoughts and vision for next year," said Moyes. "In every game we have to start looking to that. We need to be in there competing for titles next year. "That's what this club has done and all the other clubs have had periods where they haven't been competing for titles. "There is an added impor ...
Manchester City are poised to bridge the Financial Fair Play gap to the tune of an extra €7m a year. Manuel Pellegrini's side are already in deep discussions with a number of major companies to display their names and logos on a bridge as part of the City Football Academy development. City are putting the finishing touches to their €180m state-of-the-art City Football Academy, which is situated across from the Etihad Stadium. The Manchester club have also spent millions on a foot bridge that spans two major junctions and will connect the two sites, which will be used to illustrate the club's mission statement of creating a path from youth to first-team.
The first Manchester Derby of the 2013-14 season was won by City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Sergio Agüero opened the scoring on the 16th minute followed by a goal from Yaya Toure just before half time. In the second half Agüero scored his second followed by a Samir Nasri goal three minutes later. Wayne Rooney scored a late free kick for United as a consolation goal. It was the first time in twenty-six years that the Derby had been contested by two new managers: Manuel Pellegrini for Manchester City and David Moyes for Manchester United.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Manchester City will need an epic comeback against Barcelona on Wednesday to reach the Champions League quarterfinals. Barcelona won the first leg 2-0, so City will need to create plenty of goals at the Camp Nou to overturn the first-leg deficit. The Spanish champion has lost two of its three matches since winning at Etihad Stadium, with questions swirling around Lionel Messi, Neymar and coach Gerardo Martino. City, meanwhile, is missing coach Manuel Pellegrini to a touchline ban after the Chilean criticized the first-leg referee. Here are five things to know about the match: ___ MESSI EXPECTATIONS: In Barcelona, questions abound about Lionel Messi. He has 27 goals but has not looked his usual vibrant self, tending to drift out of games like in recent losses to Real Sociedad and Valladolid. The Argentina forward, who was also spotted throwing up on the field during a recent match, has the distractions of the World Cup in Brazil plus reports that City is offering a world record bi ...
Manchester City and Arsenal were beaten 2-0 at home in the first legs of their last-16 ties, and it is difficult to see either of them turning that deficit around against Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively. It was a pair of penalties, and red cards, that helped kill off City and the Gunners, but they were already a distant second best in terms of passing and possession when they were reduced to 10 men. That is likely to be the same in each second leg too. So City boss Manuel Pellegrini and Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger not only have to win, they have to do it without having the dominance of the ball they are used to when they play in the Premier League. Best in Premier League, but not in Europe In both first-leg games, at Etihad Stadium and Emirates Stadium, we saw the difference between the best teams in Europe and the best in the Premier League when it comes to keeping the ball. In those categories, City and the Gunners are two of the top-ranked teams in England's top flight but, even when it ...

Paris (AFP) - Ivory Coast and Swansea striker Wilfried Bony experienced mixed emotions away to Liverpool at the weekend, bagging a brace in a 4-3 English Premier League loss. Compatriot and African Footballer of the Year Yaya Toure was more successful, hitting the goal that gave title challengers Manchester City a 1-0 home win over Stoke City. Arthur Boka was another unhappy Ivorian scorer -- his first goal of the season for German outfit Stuttgart could not prevent a 2-1 home defeat by Hertha Berlin. ENGLAND Yaya Toure (Manchester City) Toure made sure that City kept on the tail of league leaders Chelsea by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at home to Stoke City. Lionel Messi and Dani Alves capitalised on the sending off of Martin Demichelis as Barcelona left Manchester City's Champions League hopes in tatters at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester CiTY VS BARCELONA Does it get any bigger than Manchester City playing Barcelona? Arguably, it does. Manchester City 2 CHELSEA 0 Just got back from Manchester via Shrewsbury! At the Etihad Stadium yesterday to watch City exact their revenge on Chelsea after they ended our wonderful home winning steak. There is a slogan shouted at the opposition at football matches that goes: WHO ARE YOU? Don't really understand that but the City fans might have shouted WHERE ARE YOU? as Chelsea never turned up having only three attempts on goal and not a single shot on target. Kompany marshalled the troops, Silva plagued the Chelsea defence, Javi Garcia was outstanding and Jovetic and Nasri took their chances. Now a repeat of last year's Fa Cup final at the Etihad: Manchester City v Wigan in the quarter-finals. Now to get our revenge on them!
Manuel Pellegrini exacted revenge over Jose Mourinho in the fifth round of the Fa Cup as Manchester City secured a comfortable win against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
Second half about to get underway at Etihad Stadium, and Manchester City look to keep their possible quadruple trophy campaign alive as they lead 1-0 over Chelsea in their FA Cup Fifth Round tie. Stevan Jovetic put City in the lead on 16 minutes, with the hosts creating more chances against their opponents to go further in front. Both clubs would be looking to play for the win given their heavy schedules coming up in the next couple of months, so a replay at Stamford Bridge is not the desired option, which could lead to a more open and expansive contest. Chelsea have made a change with Mohammad Salah coming on for Samuel Eto'o.
Fa Cup winners Wigan Athletic have moved through to quarter finals after they defeated Barclays Premier League outfit Cardiff City 2-1. Its now time for the marquee match of the Fifth Round, and it comes from the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City and Chelsea. Here are the teams: Manchester CiTY: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Milner, Javi Garcia, Toure, Silva, Dzeko, Jovetic. Manchester City will throw everything at Chelsea, says Manuel A defiant Manuel Pellegrini is intent on Manchester City again attacking Chelsea in Saturday's Fa Cup tie despite José Mourinho's side winning the recent league meeting by hitting them on the break. Samir Nasri should start in the fifth-round match at the Etihad Stadium following a month out with an injured knee. Chelsea won the previous game 1-0 with Mourinho's successful use of the counterattack leading to criticism of Pellegrini, whose side appeared too open, with City's manager deploying the central defender Martín Demichelis in a holding midfield role. City were particularly exposed by the pace of Eden Hazard, yet Pellegrini does not plan to change his philosophy. "Why? Because I am absolutely sure that in the previous game it was not a problem with tactics," said the Chilean. "The squad had a lot of changes and we had three or four clear chances before they scored. If we'd scored we could have scored again." Chelsea won with a rare goal ...

Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic (knee) has joined the club's injury list ahead of their midweek Premier League clash with Sunderland. The Serbian is not expected to be out long but misses Wednesday's contest at the Etihad Stadium along with striker Sergio Aguero (hamstring), playmaker Samir Nasri (knee) and midfielders Fernandinho and Javi Garcia (muscle injuries). Key midfielder Yaya Toure is available after escaping retrospective punishment following an off-the-ball incident involving Norwich's Ricky van Wolfswinkel last weekend. Wes Brown will miss out for Sunderland through suspension. The 34-year-old central defender will sit out both Wednesday's visit to Manchester and Saturday's Fa Cup fifth-round tie against Southampton after being sent off for the second time this season - a further red card was later rescinded in November - in the 2-0 home defeat by Hull at the weekend. January signing Santiago Vergini is likely to deputise, while fellow defender Carlos Cuellar (hip) and striker Steven ...
Manchester City - Sunderland Preview: Hosts must get back in the goals against bogey team Manchester City can hardly be dubbed goal-shy but they welcome Sunderland on Later after drawing blanks in their last two Premier League games. Manuel Pellegrini's side have caught the eye with a series of pulsating attacking displays in the top flight this season and have scored more goals than anyone else in the division with 68 in 25 games. The Chilean will be keen for his wealth of forward options to rediscover their free-scoring ways against Gus Poyet's men at the Etihad Stadium after a 1-0 defeat at home to fellow title challengers Chelsea was followed by a disappointing 0-0 draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday. City's barren run, albeit a minor blip, has coincided with an injury to star striker Sergio Aguero, who missed both games with a hamstring injury. The Argentina international has 15 goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season but will be unavailable again on Wednesday, meaning that t ...

Arsenal's new kit suppliers Puma will help the club fund a move to sign Mario Balotelli this summer, according to reports in Italy cited by The Metro. The aforementioned reports suggest that amid rumours that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been dissuaded from a potential deal for the AC Milan striker, that Puma - who signed a five-year deal with Arsenal believed to be worth more than £30 million-per-year last month - are keen to help finance a deal for Balotelli - whom they also sponsor - and could be willing to offer more than £15 million to assist the pursuit. 23-year-old Balotelli - who is known as much for his off-field antics as he is for his footballing abilities - joined Serie A outfit AC Milan in January 2012 after calling time on a controversial three-year Premier League stint with Manchester City. Although he collected a league winner's medal during that time, Balotelli had a fractious relationship with compatriot and former manager Roberto Mancini and it was hardly a surprise to see him event ...

Pellegrini feels frustration Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini felt the 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea was a frustrating match of missed chances. City had 25 shots in Monday night’s Etihad Stadium showdown against their title rivals, but only managed to get three on target in the 90 minutes. The visitors were more dangerous, with a third of their 18 shots testing Joe Hart in the City goal and a further three hitting the woodwork. Even then, City had chances to *** an equaliser at the death as David Silva and Stevan Jovetic both came close to finding a way past Petr Cech. Pellegrini pointed towards the absence of two of his key players – Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho – both of whom were sidelined through injury. “We had clear chances to score at least two goals but didn’t do it, and they had two or three shots against the post,” the Chilean told Sky Sports. “It was a very close game to play against Chelsea without (Sergio) Aguero and Fernandinho. “It’s important to note that we were m .. ...
