The test of three matches in six days has pushed players and managers to the limit over the festive period but tired legs have not stopped some from impressing. 10 questions for the weekend With yet another huge weekend of Premier League football ahead of us, we ponder 10 questions that will be answered by Monday evening ... Can the Saints get back to winning ways at Turf Moor? Southampton were absolutely flying when they travelled to struggling Aston Villa for a Monday Night Football clash last month, only for the south coast club’s form to have dipped alarmingly since then. And while the Saints have had to face the likes of Premier League champions Manchester City, FA Cup winners Arsenal, and high-flying Manchester United in that time, head coach Ronald Koeman will be desperate for his side to get back to winning ways, and quickly, starting with Saturday’s trip to take on relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor. However, the Dutchman will not be fretting just yet given how well Southampton played on Monday evening in their 2-1 home loss to United at St Mary’s. Will Diego Costa end his goalscoring drought against the Tigers? When Diego Costa opened the ...
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa man Stan Collymore believes Manchester United are genuine contenders for the Premier League title, insisting their absence in European competitions is a huge advantage to the club. The Red Devils have won their last five league games and are currently in third place in the league table, after beating Southampton at St.Marys on Monday night. Manchester United’s winning streak has boosted confidence, says Juan Mata Louis Van Gaal’s side have recovered from their slow start this season and seem like they are a threat going into the crucial clash against rivals Liverpool on Sunday. Collymore believes Manchester City and Chelsea will be looking behind their backs in the next few weeks, with the Red Devils back in full force under Van Gaal. Collymore told Bleacher Report: “Manchester United are in the best position out of all the top clubs in the Premier League. They don’t have the distraction of the Champions League, have won five on the spin and will add at least one c ...

Seven Premier League matches this Saturday (6th December 2014) •Newcastle host Chelsea •Costa returns for Chelsea •Avoiding defeat would mean new record of unbeaten 15 Premier League games in the current season 2014-2015. •Also Chelsea will be unbeaten in 24 competitive matches in a row. Manchester City are in a good run of form •Scored 3 victories in a row over Bayern Munich, Southampton and Sunderland •Sergio Aguero has scored 19 goals in this season •City are six points behind leaders Chelsea in second place •The damage done early season by the blips against Stoke, West Ham and QPR will hurt them for a long time. Only 6 points separate (12th placed) Aston Villa(16 points) & (20th placed) last placed Leicester(10 points) •Surprisingly, in an interesting battle Aston Villa play Leicester. •Also in battle of survival QPR play Burnley
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman believes that Sunday's meeting with Manchester City will test if his side are in the title race for the long haul. "On Sunday we are playing against one of the team that can win the title and we know that we have to play better than we did last Monday against Aston Villa, but Southampton is not an easy team to play against and we will show that again," he said. "If we want to do something special this season we need to win these kind of games."
The glorious days of Southampton are gradually winding up. If they could not beat Aston Villa, I wonder what they will do with the 3 strong matches waiting for them consecutively: Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. They are yet to play with the seeming invincible Chelsea. Even the sinking Liverpool has not yet played with them. The most serious club they have played this season is Tottenham and they lost. If they survive 2 of their next 3 matches then they are up to something. If not, the epl table will take the shape it's used to. The club has been fantastic this season. But I don't see them among the first 4 at the end of December. God help them.
Chelsea maintain lead as Toure rescues Man City: Diego Costa scored again as Chelsea established a seven-point lead at the Premier League summit by comfortably beating ten-man West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Costa opened the scoring in the 11th minute, leaping into the air to control Oscar’s left-wing cross on his chest and then slamming a side-foot volley past Ben Foster for his 11th goal of the campaign. Eden Hazard added a second in the 25th minute, smuggling a deflected shot beneath Foster from Cesc Fabregas’s corner, before West Brom’s Claudio Yacob was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Costa. Victory saw Chelsea set a new club record of 12 unbeaten games from the start of the season. Jose Mourinho’s side are now seven points clear of second-place Southampton, who visit Aston Villa on Monday, and remain eight points above defending champions Manchester City, who won 2-1 at home to Swansea City. Despite having captain Vincent Kompany back from injury, Manchester City fe ...
Premier League FLASHBACK It was back in 1992 when the top division in English football broke away from the rest of the league to form the inaugural FA Carling Premier League. During that first season, the number of clubs in the new league was still 22 – just as it had been in the old First Division. But in 1995 the number was reduced to 20. Here's how the table looked almost exactly 22 years ago on 21 November 1992 (number of points shown in brackets): 1 Norwich City (33) 2 Arsenal (29) 3 Aston Villa (28) 4 Blackburn Rovers (27) 5 Queens Park Rangers (26) 6 Manchester City (25) 7 Chelsea (25) 8 Manchester United (24) 9 Coventry City (23) 10 Ipswich Town (22) 11 Middlesbrough (21) 12 Leeds United (21) 13 Liverpool (19) 14 Sheffield Wednesday (19) 15 Tottenham Hotspur (19) 16 Sheffield United (17) 17 Everton (16) 18 Southampton (15) 19 Oldham Athletic (15) 20 Wimbledon (14) 21 Crystal Palace (12) 22 Nottingham Forest (11)

England Under-21s striker Harry Kane continued his impressive goalscoring form for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with a free-kick winner against Aston Villa. The 21-year-old has been amongst the goals for both club and country so far this season and his appearance from the bench in the second half at Villa Park helped Spurs come back from behind to collect all three points, courtesy of Kane's first Premier League strike this campaign. Elsewhere, Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for Manchester City as they secured a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Hart kept out, amongst others, the returning Wayne Rooney after the England captain made his return from suspension to the starting line-up for United. Read the full round-up here:

Everton host Aston Villa on Saturday at Goodison Park and will be looking to get back to winning ways after going down 2-1 to Manchester United last time out. That game at Old Trafford feels like months ago and there is nothing worse than going into an international break with a defeat – and Everton being Everton have an annoying habit of doing just that. Our latest loss came against an average United side and things might have been very different if it wasn’t for the excellence of De Gea between the home side’s sticks, but now we must look forward and move on to our next challenge which is a vital three points against Villa this weekend. Paul Lambert’s side travel to Goodison on the back on three defeats – to Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal respectively – and their last victory came when they last made the trip to Merseyside, winning 1-0 at the temple of doom across the park. On that particular afternoon the Villains put in an impressive performance and a solitary Agbonlahor (try saying ...

Half-Time Report: Manchester City struggle for breakthrough at Aston Villa
Off colour Hazard must find his form The biggest match of the Premier League weekend sees Chelsea take on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and while the main build-up has centred on Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas, Blues supporters have found another topic of conversation equally interesting -- Eden Hazard. Despite being afforded plenty of game time by Jose Mourinho, Hazard's start to the new campaign has been indifferent, with a solitary goal, against newly promoted Leicester City, to show for his endeavours. Yes, there have been glimpses of his undoubted ability, particularly against Swansea and Manchester City, but last weekend against Aston Villa, Hazard cut a peripheral figure and was replaced after 68 minutes. Villa were there for the taking, perfect opponents for flat-track bully Hazard to punish, but it was tigerish, box-to-box midfielder Willian who stole the headlines in the 3-0 rout. The Brazilian's goal, complemented by strikes from Oscar and Diego Costa, sealed a comprehen ...

Lisbon bound Ramires and Didier Drogba were absent as the squad departed London ahead of tomorrow's Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon. Ramires missed the weekend win against Aston Villa after sustaining a muscular injury during our 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Jose Mourinho spoke about the Brazilian's condition in Friday's press conference, indicating tomorrow's game, as well as Sunday's clash with Arsenal, would come too soon for the midfielder. Diego Costa was part of the travelling 20-player party, as were youngsters Nathan Ake and Mitchell Beeney. Lewis Baker has not travelled while Andreas Christensen is with Adi Viveash’s Under-19 squad ahead of their UEFA Youth League game against Sporting, which kicks off at 3pm tomorrow. Aston Villa confirm that Christian Benteke could make his return to action against Manchester City next weekend.
Yesterday in his pre-match conference, Jose Mourinho spoke about the important options a short injury list allows him . Today ahead of the visit from Aston Villa, the manager emphasises that strength in depth is available if he chooses to bring fresh faces into his selected team. This was confirmed by the way Chelsea went about overcoming Bolton in the midweek cup game with a side showing nine changes from the league match at Manchester City. Pointing out the risk which sometimes occurs in contests against lower division sides, Mourinho was pleased with the all-round display on Wednesday, including from the less experienced players fielded. ‘The young players did well,’ he says. ‘Many times you start these games and you see a lazy team, teams waiting for things to happen, but from the first minute my team was there, playing good football, playing fast, playing intense, creating chances. ‘The Bolton goalkeeper was the player with most influence in the game so I was happy with what we did collective ...
Aston Villa V Chelsea Preview The Premier League pace-setters will be looking to consolidate their top spot as Chelsea welcome Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Top of the table after five games, four points clear of their nearest title rival and with the best goal-difference in the division, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea (4-1-0) have been in ominously good form in the opening weeks of the season. The summer transfer window saw Chelsea bring in star quality in Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, and both have hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge - with Costa the Premier League's top-scorer with seven goals already. A 1-1 draw at Manchester City last Sunday was the club's first dropped points of the league campaign, but they responded with a 2-1 League Cup win courtesy of a second-string side against a spirited Bolton in midweek. Saturday brings another tricky test for the Blues, with upstart and third-place Aston Villa (3-1-1) coming to Stamford Bridge on the back of some good performances. ...
TEAM NEWS: Ramires out, Costa doubt, Cech to start for Chelsea against Bolton RAMIRES is out of Chelsea's Capital One Cup third-round tie with Bolton tomorrow night The Brazil midfielder was substituted during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City after picking up an abductor muscle injury. Ramires will be have the complaint reviewed later this week ahead of Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa on Saturday. Top scorer Diego Costa (hamstring) is unlikely to feature against Bolton either. But goalkeeper Petr Cech could start as manager Jose Mourinho plans to rotate his squad with Premier League and Champions League matches to follow in the coming weeks.
Jose Mourinho has confirmed Diego Costa will be fit to lead the line at Manchester City on Sunday but will be rested against Bolton in the Capital One Cup. Costa is nursing a hamstring problem which needs rest and not in the top condition, according to the manager. When asked about his squad's fitness ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Mourinho said: 'Everybody’s ready. Diego (Costa) is not in the best condition but he will start. 'He plays this game but he cannot play against Bolton, as simple as that. He plays Sunday and not against Bolton, then he plays against Aston Villa. 'That’s his evolution. Let’s hope he goes in the right direction and becomes available for every game. 'Last season he was at Atletico Madrid, this season the problem was in the national team but I don’t want to speak about it. The player is fantastic in his amazing attitude to play. 'I know what we have and clearly that we have to protect him until he gets completely fit.'
Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy will be out for at least six weeks with an ankle injury, manager Arsene Wenger has said. The French defender, who was carried off on a stretcher against Manchester City on Saturday, could be missing for three months if surgery is required. Wenger said: "He has an exploration of his ankle on Friday night. They go in and look how the ligament is damaged." Calum Chambers, 19, is expected to replace the 28-year-old for Saturday's Premier League visit to Aston Villa.
They Overcome Their Demons Last season everybody assumed that the two teams battling it out for the title until the very end would be Manchester City and Chelsea, and to many people’s surprise it was Manchester City and Liverpool, with Chelsea tailing off as we entered the back end of the season. It seemed strange that they would succumb to third place as they did not suffer any defeats at the hands of the top 4 teams; in fact they managed to win all 4 games against champions City and runners-up Liverpool. Chelsea ended up only finishing 4 points off the top, and these points were tedious draws and losses that one would not expect Chelsea to yield to. Defeats at the hands of such clubs as Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Sunderland eventually cost Chelsea the title, although you would expect these to be formality wins from Mourinho’s men. In consequence to that it was The Special One’s job to find out what the problem is and fix it over the summer, the obvious problem would be the lack of goals from ...

English Premier League 2014/15 SEASON BEGINS No fixture is considered easy as the English Premier League kicks off today with 20-time champions Manchester United facing Swansea City and Arsenal hosting CrystalPalace in a London derby. Both United and Arsenal will be in the spotlight for the most part of the season following their dramatic campaigns last season. United, who were aiming to defend the title they won in the 2012-13 season, had flopped under manager David Moyes and had finished the season 7th in the log, a position that was as strange to the Red Devils as falling to their ‘noisy’ neighbours twice in the season; the second being a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. Arsenal also had one of their most embarrassing campaigns in recent time, losing on wide margins to Liverpool and Manchester City, and finishing fourth, again, after staying atop the league for most weeks of the season. Unlike how Arsenal started the league last season when they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa, they are favourites to win today ...

Based on a statistical analysis of each club's previous performances in the league and the relative success of their transfer business , the Citizens have been given a 38.7 per cent chance of holding onto their title, just pipping Chelsea's 38.4 per cent chance of lifting the crown. In order to come to these ...

Today, the last round of matches will be played in the EPL and Manchester City fans expects the trophy to stay in Manchester but there could be a twist if Westham beats the Citizens and Liverpool defeats Newcastle then the Reds becomes Champions for the first time in 24 years which will be the first for Steven Gerrard. Manchester United can also steal a Europa Cup spot if they beat Southampton away and Tottenham lose against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane while Norwich needs a win and a massive 17goals to escape relegation which is not impossible in football just ask the Nigerian League sides how to achieve that and you will be amazed;). Do you think any twist will happen?
The Portuguese saw his hopes of winning a trophy in his first season back at Stamford Bridge disappear in the space of a week with a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid and a domestic draw with Norwich City. Chelsea would have fancied their chances of reaching the European final when they held the Primera Division leaders to a goalless draw at the Estadio Vicente Calderon but they were beaten 3-1 in the second leg and there was more frustration for the Londoners four days later as the Championship-bound Canaries left Stamford Bridge with a 0-0 result that ended the Blues' title hopes. Yaya Toure's timing on the pitch, his ability to see the space, switch gear and bustle in at just the right moment, is exemplary. But the Manchester City midfielder must wish more of his peers and observers had the capability to match it. The Ivorian's superb individual goal against Aston Villa on Wednesday night was apparently scored by only the third best player in the Barclays Premier League. It must be some competition, the English top flight, if a midfielder can score 20 league goals in a potentially title-winning campaign, display such power, strength, vision and skill and yet only be third in the queue. Toure has claimed he missed out on becoming the first African to be crowned the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year because of his nationality, but it's more complex than that. It's a question of timing and momentum and the value of stunningly memorable goal-scoring performances over relentless consistency. There is also an element of style of substance at play here. It is ...
It was nervy match for Manchester City last night but they eventually broke the stubborn resistance of Aston Villa just after the hour mark and went on to score more goals from Edin Dzeko and Stefan Jovetic. But, just before the final whistle, Yaya Toure picked up the ball 70 yards from the Villa goal and then he did this. The goal was City’s 100th of the season and with a game to go they just need a draw in their final game against West Ham to win a second Premier League title in three years. FULL TIME: Manchester City 4 - 0 Aston Villa. Worked hard until the first goal and did well, but then capitulated to an onslaught from Manchester City. Not sure if this is a positive or negative (depending on how you feel) But Villa have almost certainly prevented Liverpool from winning the Premier League. After all, Manchester City have already lost to Aston Villa once this season, while West Ham managed to pick up a draw at Stamford Bridge, after which Jose Mourinho famously said of the Hammers' tactics: "This is football from the 19th century. Merse tips Reds and Toffees draws| Paul Merson has predicted weekend wins for Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City but reckons both Liverpool and Everton will be held. Ireland delighted to be part of the Stoke City family Stephen Ireland has lavished praise upon Stoke City manager Mark Hughes and the Club's supporters for making him feel wanted again after pledging his long-term future to the Potters. The 27-year-old's career stagnated during an unsuccessful spell at Aston Villa prior to his summer switch to the Britannia Stadium. However, he has since rediscovered the form he showed at Manchester City after reacquainting himself with Hughes for a second time and had no hesitation in signing a three-year contract which commits him to the Club until the summer of 2017. Speaking exclusively to stokecityfc.com shortly after penning his long-term agreement, he said he would be forever grateful to both the manager and the fans for helping him to rejuvenate his playing career, and is aiming to pay them back by helping secure a landmark top-half finish this term. "It's important for every player to feel wanted and to be a part of a family and to be honest I haven't had that fo ...

Manchester City have held talks with Sergio Aguero to underline their desire to keep him well beyond this summer. Wigan and Crystal Palace are eyeing Brondby striker Simon Makienok, who has netted eight goals in 17 league games this term. Jamie Redknapp believes Jose Mourinho should take more than his fair share of the responsibility for Chelsea's recent struggles. It was only a matter of weeks ago, on the back of a 14-game unbeaten run that included wins over Liverpool and Manchester City, that Chelsea were being talked of as Premier League champions-elect. Mourinho consistently downplayed his side's chances, though, and his prophecy has been fulfilled in recent weeks with the Blues losing to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace either side of their thumping win over Arsenal. The west Londoners also went down 3-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in midweek but, rather than blaming his forwards, Redknapp believes Mourinho should take some of the responsibility himself. He told Sky Sports: "Jose Mourinho has spent a lot of time this season pointing the finger at his forwards, rather than taking responsibility for Chelsea's results. "That's increased in recent weeks with three defeats in their last four ...
SIX REASONS WHY Manchester United FANS CAN BELIEVE THEIR TEAM WILL DEFEAT Bayern Munich Manchester United 's 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg has kept alive hopes of an unexpected place in the semi-finals for David Moyes's team. World, European and German champions Bayern remain odds-on favourites to progress in next Wednesday's second-leg at the Allianz Arena, but United can at least travel to Bavaria with some grounds for optimism. 1 - BAYERN'S HOME HOODOO AGAINST ENGLISH CLUBS: Bayern have become a machine which sweeps aside all before them, but English opposition in Munich appears to be the one glitch in the system. The European champions have now failed to win any of their last four games against English clubs at the Allianz Arena - losing to Manchester City and Arsenal in 2013, with Chelsea's penalty shoot-out win in the 2012 Champions League Final and Arsenal's draw last month completing the sequence. Even Bolton Wanderers emerged from the Allianz with ...

Football is expensive. Fact. As the Football Association announced the launch of yet another England kit, including a replica version that retails at £90, we decided to look into another area where the game is getting increasingly pricey. Year-on-year supporters are hit in the pocket as clubs look to squeeze out every penny they can from loyal fans, with the price of going to the game the highest its ever been. In the latest findings, the cheapest Premier League season ticket is £299 (Manchester City), while the most expensive for the current campaign sits at £1,955 (Arsenal). In a moment of nostalgia, talkSPORT found out how much this season's top flight clubs were charging for season tickets in 1981 – the pre-Premier League era – how that would translate into current prices, taking into account the rate of inflation, and compared them to the cheapest tickets available today. Arsenal: 1981 season ticket price – £84 (equivalent to £273.05 in 2014 prices) compared to £985 for the cheapest ticke ...

Jose Mourinho has said he no longer believes it is possible for Chelsea to win the title following Saturday’s shock 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. Mourinho has seen his side succumb to disappointing defeats to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in recent weeks. ENDBrewin: Deserved defeat for Blues A John Terry own goal on 52 minutes handed the three points to the Blues' relegation-threatened hosts and Mourinho, who has repeatedly played down his side’s title hopes in recent months, said after the match that -- with Manchester City and Liverpool in pursuit -- the result looked to have ended their chances. “We depend too much on other results,” he said. “When you depend a little, it's possible. When you depend a lot, I don't think it's possible. We depend now too much. I don't think now we can win the league.” Later, Mourinho absolved his defenders -- Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta -- of blame for the loss, but was not shy at pointing fingers at others, saying: "My four ...

Manchester United 4-1 Aston Villa: Rooney & Mata inspire comeback win The striker scored twice before half-time to cancel out Ashley Westwood's opener before the January signing scored his first goal for the team and Chicharito added a late fourth Mar 29, 2014 2:36:00 PM Manchester United ended a week of frustration on and off the pitch in fine fashion by beating Aston Villa 4-1 on Saturday. Much of the game's build-up had been dominated by a planned protest against David Moyes' management of the struggling champions, with a plane trailing the message 'Wrong One - Moyes Out' flown above Old Trafford during the contest. A midweek defeat to local rivals Manchester City was the latest of United's setbacks in a tough season, tipping some fans over the edge. And the

Manchester Utd v Aston Villa Premier League Saturday 12:45 David Moyes is in dire need of three points and he’s expected to keep up with Manchester United’s tradition of taking points off Aston Villa in the Premier League. Arsenal v Manchester City Premier League Saturday 17:30 Manchester City are expected to follow up their impressive derby victory with another three points when they travel to the Emirates Stadium for Saturday Night Football.
David Moyes says even Sir Alex Ferguson would have had difficulty making Manchester United competitive this season. United have endured a nightmare first season under Moyes, trailing leaders Chelsea by 18 points and guaranteed their lowest-ever Premier League points total. They have suffered consecutive 3-0 home Premier League defeats to arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, with supporters turning against Moyes. A section of angry United fans have hired a plane to fly over Old Trafford at today’s game against Aston Villa with a banner calling for his head. But the under-fire Moyes said even Ferguson – who led United to an 11-point title win last season – would have found it hard to triumph this term. “If Sir Alex was here this year it would be difficult for him as well, and he would be aware of that,” said Moyes. “People are aware that there was a squad that was ageing, so it would be a tough season for whoever was in charge this season. “There’s been a change from a great manager, ...
Since Chelsea lost to Aston Villa,Julius Tchongwe has never allowed us to rest in this group. All his talks ever since is how Chelsea is fond of loosing to smaller teams unlike his Manchester City. Now i will want you guys to take a look at the smaller teams Manchester City were unable to beat and tell me if a person that is supporting this club is supposed to be talking about another club in terms of failing to beat smaller teams. The funniest thing is that same Aston villa beat Manchester City too. How do people really analyze football matches?,through hatred or facts?. It gets tighter and tighter at the top and Chelsea have a chance this weekend to set down a marker in the title run-in when we kick off at Selhurst Park before Manchester City and Liverpool. Attention switches focus later on Saturday as City travel to wounded Arsenal. Already dead Man United will play Aston Villa and free-flowing Liverpool to host unpredictable Spurs on Sunday. Chelsea 4-1 C. Palace Arsenal 3-1 Man City Man United 3-1 A. Villa Liverpool 2-3 Spurs
2002/03 Next up we look back on a season that was in the balance until the very end… By the start of the 2002/03 season Chelsea had financial worries, so finishing in the top four - and thus qualifying for the Champions League - was not just an aspiration but rather an imperative if the club was to keep challenging near the top in the way we had grown used to doing. With 10 games to go we were fourth but only on goal difference ahead of the Merseyside pairing of Everton and Liverpool. The approach to the finish line included Carlton Cole- inspired wins over Bolton and Sunderland but also tame defeats at Aston Villa and soon-to- be-relegated West Ham, while a 4-1 thrashing of Everton at the Bridge on Easter Monday put the Toffees out of contention for that elusive fourth spot. Our penultimate-day loss at Upton Park might have proved more damaging had it not been for Manchester City and in particular Nicolas Anelka. He netted a match-winning brace against Liverpool meaning we only had to draw, and not win ...
Manchester United:The road to recovery Manchester United haven’t had the best of seasons, this season. They have been struggling quite a lot, but they’re getting back into it. I would love to see them keep it up; however, there next game is against Manchester City. City are a team battling for the title, and United are sat stuck in 7th place, 12 points behind their rivals. A win for United would be wonderful. After playing City, United have the likes of playing: Aston Villa, Newcastle, Hull, Everton, Norwich & Sunderland – By looking at them teams, you can tell they’re beatable. If United can beat City, then I suppose they can take 3 points, home against the other teams. This season, many of United star players have been out injured. Van Persie has been out for a long period of time – Rooney & Carrick have also been out for a long amount of time, that’s when United ended up all sloppy and found their way 6th and 7th in the table. Van Persie has played 18 games scoring 11 and assisting 3 in the ...
Chelsea became the first English side to reach the Champions League last eight after beating a limp Galatasaray. Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, former Blues striker Didier Drogba could not inspire the Turkish team, who fell behind early on when Samuel Eto'o fired past Fernando Muslera. Play media Gary Cahill made it 3-1 on aggregate when he thumped home after John Terry's header was saved. Galatasaray's night was summed up by Drogba's stoppage-time miss. After Arsenal and Manchester City were knocked out last week Chelsea won this game at a canter. And the result means that Galatasaray boss Roberto Mancini has yet to beat Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in six European attempts. Unlike the first leg, where the visitors recovered from a poor start in Istanbul, Galatasaray did not look like troubling the Premier League leaders, who responded well to Saturday's surprise defeat by Aston Villa. Mourinho, who is aiming to win a third Champions League trophy with a different team, said in the build-up to the game ...

European threat to domestic glory as Chelsea prepare for Galatasaray With Chelsea's Premier League season taking an unexpected turn for the worse on Saturday evening as they slipped to a controversial defeat against Aston Villa, on a weekend when title rivals Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all won, Blues boss Jose Mourinho must now rally his team for Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second-leg decider with Galatasaray at Stamford Bridge. While it was the red card-brandishing antics of referee Chris Foy that grabbed the headlines following the loss to Paul Lambert's resurgent Villa, it's fair to say that Chelsea weren't at their best. The dismissal of Willian was unjust, but there was a jaded look to the Blues play at Villa Park. Not for the first time this season, they looked toothless up front. "You're not Special anymore," chanted a jubilant Holte End as Foy, having dismissed Ramires late, with the Villans already a goal to the good, sent Jose Mourinho to the stands for his involvement in the ...
Would you rather have a six point advantage or three extra games – a trip to Old Trafford before hosting Sunderland and Aston Villa – to make up the ground? That's the situation Premier League pacesetters Chelsea and Manchester City find themselves in. But before you boldly declare that City’s points deficit is the favourable option, consider the teams that block their path to the title in their games in hand… Manchester United. City’s closest rivals have welcomed back lethal strike partnership Rooney and RVP, and can ill afford another derby defeat. Sunderland. A side that boasts victories at St James’ Park and Goodison Park this season, the Black Cats also toppled City at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League and ran them close in the League Cup final. Aston Villa. The Midlands outfit beat City 3-2 earlier in the campaign and are just starting to hit form with Christian Benteke belatedly warming to his second season in English football. So are City guaranteed at least six points from ni ...

The Citizens have played three fewer matches on the league season, but they trail Chelsea by just six points after downing Hull this previous matchday. Meanwhile, with both Liverpool and Arsenal picking up wins, they now trail Chelsea by just four points and have played one less game. We are set for a wild finish to the season. Have a look at the table following Matchday 30 and then we'll get into the upcoming action.

Jose Mourinho Wants Friday Night Football| Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes English clubs in European competitions should be allowed to play domestic matches on Friday nights. The Blues visit Aston Villa in the Premier League's late kick-off on Saturday before hosting Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. "If we played on Friday night, it makes a difference to who? It'd be a full house, the same," said Mourinho. "If it was the only match on TV, the (audience) share would be fantastic." The Portuguese added: "Would it be good for Chelsea? Yes. Would it be good for English football? Yes." Chelsea's schedule means their Champions League opponents, Galatasaray, have around 24 hours extra preparation time following their goalless draw with Karabukspor on Friday night. The Blues' last-16 tie against the Turks is delicately poised at 1-1 heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge in midweek. And while the 51-year-old says he has no problem with television companies determining the schedules, ...
Delph's goal for Aston Villa was not only sublime (Cryuff-esque) but changes the Premier landscape! 2 Reds for Chelsea and a lost game. Manchester City FC fortunes have changed.
It was an exciting Saturday afternoon in the English Premier League with 20 goals scored across eight games as Manchester City, Everton, Fulham, Southampton, Stoke City, West Brom and Aston Villa all won.
FULL-TIME- Hull 0-2 Man City So, something for Chelsea to think about ahead of their game at Aston Villa, which is today's late kick-off. When Vincent Kompany was sent off it looked like a bad week for Manchester City was about to get even worse, but David Silva had other ideas. Hull stay 13th, five points above the drop zone, but they might be a bit closer to it in a couple of hours because all the teams below them are in action
This season is one of the most exciting Premier League title races in years, featuring four potential winners in Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. With that in mind, football chat takes a look at two crucial games for each side where the title could be won and lost. Chelsea's fixtures The Blues are certainly in Pole Position for the title and with five of their nine remaining games falling at Stamford Bridge, where Mourinho is unbeaten in 75 games, it is the away days which will prove pivotal. There are trips to Swansea and Crystal Palace but it is the away days at Aston Villa (March 15) and Liverpool (April 27) which rank far higher in importance. Chelsea do not boast the greatest record at Villa, having played 68, lost 32 and won only 16. In recent seasons they have improved but this fixture has slip-up written all over it. Paul Lambert's side are on a high following a 4-1 win over relegation rivals Norwich City and with Christian Benteke back on form they will fancy nicking something, ev ...
PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: ASTON VILLA V CHELSEA - PART ONE 14-03-2014 This game is the only trip outside of London this month for the Blues. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton are ready to hit the road... TALKING POINTS Aston Villa's last home game brought a handsome victory over Norwich but they have not registered successive home league wins in one campaign since August 2010. The victims back then were West Ham and Everton, either side of a 6-0 thumping at Newcastle and aggregate loss to Europa League foes Rapid Vienna. Chelsea will hope to extend that broken sequence - the longest ever in the top flight - and even a draw might not suffice in what is shaping up to be a very tight title run-in. We are unbeaten in six games on the road and in three visits to Villa Park, the two most recent ending in victory. Famously, Frank Lampard hit a brace in last season's 2-1 win (four days before the 2013 Europa League final triumph) to surpass Bobby Tambling 's long-standing goalscoring record ...
Jose Mourinho has hit back at Yaya Toure's accusation that the Chelsea boss showed a lack of respect to other English teams by talking openly about their chances in the Champions League in the last week. Toure, who was part of the Manchester City side that lost in Barcelona the day after Arsenal's Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, was unhappy with Mourinho's comments, but speaking ahead of Chelsea's trip to Aston Villa, he insisted his words were only made out of support. Your take?

Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Craig Bellamy's reputation earned him a three-match ban for violent conduct and not the incident itself. The veteran forward missed Tuesday's goalless draw with Aston Villa after club and player "reluctantly" opted not to contest the FA charge for striking Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzman with his arm during Saturday's south Wales derby. Bellamy will also miss the FA Cup clash with holders Wigan and the crucial Premier League meeting with Hull. The incident was missed by referee Andre Marriner and his team of officials at the time, but it was reviewed by a three-man panel of former elite referees who unanimously agreed it constituted violent conduct. Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure escaped punishment after kicking Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel at Carrow Road. Solskjaer believes former Wales' forward Bellamy's reputation has seen him unfairly punished. "Everyone can see there is a big difference in the decisions (on Bellamy and Toure ...

Manchester United and Chelsea have joined the 'Football v Homophobia' campaign for the first time as the group seeks to gain support from 50% of professional clubs in England. Of the Premier League's 20 teams, 11 are involved but only 17 from the Football League's 72 clubs plan a "visible anti-homophobia stance". Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and West Ham have all backed the scheme. "We're passionate about supporting this," said West Ham's Kevin Nolan. "We hope that it sends out a message that there is no place for discrimination in football, nor in any sport." The Hammers kicked off a month of action in February by wearing Football v Homophobia T-shirts before their 2-0 win over Swansea last Saturday. Other top flight clubs such as Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton, Stoke and Sunderland are set to follow suit via a range of promotional methods. The idea of the campaign is to challenge homophobic behaviour while welcoming more *** *** bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) people to football. Las ...
Football First of all, a look back at last night's Premier League football and Manchester City moved to the top of the table after beating 10-man Spurs 5-1. Chelsea had 39 efforts at goal against West Ham but the Hammers came away with a 0-0 draw. A Christian Benteke penalty helped Aston Villa beat West Brom 4-3 in a game where Villa trailed 2-0 early on and Adam Johnson was on target as Sunderland defeated Stoke 1-0 to move out of the bottom three.
How do Rodgers’ Liverpool compare to Rafa’s class of 2009? The 2008/09 team was arguably Liverpool’s best since the Premier League began in 1992. Henry Jackson ( compares the current first-choice starting XI to Rafa Benitez’s five years ago. SIMON MIGOLNET vs Pepe Reina ADVERTISEMENT Mignolet made a superb start to life at Anfield, saving a penalty on his debut to earn Liverpool all three points at home to Stoke. He also produced a magnificent performance in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Since then, however, his form has dipped, making key errors against Manchester City and Aston Villa, in particular. Reina was in his prime back in 08/09, and had kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League for the previous three seasons. He was a world-class goalkeeper who would have got into virtually any team on the planet at the time. He faded in his last few years at the club, but at this point he was magnificent. 'Resilient & improving but Arsenal will not win league' In his regular BBC Sport column, Robbie Savage looks at Arsenal's victory over Aston Villa. I was at Villa Park for BBC Radio 5 live and saw for myself why the Gunners are back on top of the table, and serious title contenders this season. Arsenal were completely dominant for 75 minutes, until Christian Benteke pulled a goal back. Then we saw the other side of Arsene Wenger's side, when they had to battle to protect their lead - which they did. They have been brilliant this season but will they win the title? I still say no. Manchester City remain my choice, and I think Chelsea will run them closest. But, with four months of the season remaining and 17 games left, these are the reasons why Arsenal are leading the way at the moment, and why they will push City and Chelsea all the way. Their work-rate to win the ball back I already knew before the Villa game that Arsenal are excellent when they are in possession. But, at Villa Park, they were just as . ...
