Arsene Wenger has been the best and the worst manager Arsenal has ever had.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was relieved to declare his side have their Champions League Group D destiny in their own hands after their dramatic late win against Anderlecht in Brussels. Late goals from Kieran Gibbs and a dramatic winner from Lukas Podolski handed the Gunners what was an unlikely victory on a night when they struggled to hit top form, with the dramatic finish to the game handing Wenger a perfect 65th birthday present. "We looked to control the game in the first half and controlled their counter attacks well," Wenger told Sky Sports. "In the second half we opened up and defensively got caught. "After that, the crucial point was when we were 1-0 down and they couldn't take advantage with the chance for the second goal. We kept going, managed to score two good goals and showed we had the spirit to win the game. "The group is in our hands. Let's first qualify and then see how far we can go." But when Walcott returns, Sanchez will most likely move to the left or even get a chance through the middle. Ivan Gazidis RULE OUT FABREGAS AND AURIER TO ARSENAL Ivan Gazidis has ruled out Cesc Fabregas and Serge Aurier moving to Arsenal this summer, but revealed the club are in talks with several of their transfer targets. The Gunners’ chief executive met with concerned fans last night at an AGM meeting, the Metro reports. On the minds of Arsenal supporters was former captain Fabregas, who left the club in 2011 for Barcelona, but Gazidis hinted that the Spaniard is not a priority. There has also been strong speculation linking Toulouse right-back Aurier with the FA Cup winners, as a replacement for Manchester City-bound Bacary Sagna, after he told a fan on video he would join. However, Gazidis has ruled the Ivory Coast international out as well. Manager Arsene Wenger, who signed a new three-year-deal last week, is believed to have £70million to spend, and fans are expecting him to bring in a number of fresh faces of high calibre. According to Gazidis, work is being done on new players, although progress may ...

Everton captain Phil Jagielka is a major doubt with a hamstring injury. But fellow defender Antolin Alcaraz is ready to return after six games out with a muscle problem. Arsenal v Bayern Munich: The win that kick-started a Gunners revival Comments (276) Arsenal face Champions League holders Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium after taking two significant steps on the road to recovery from their public humiliation at Liverpool. Manager Arsene Wenger knew his side needed a response to that 5-1 defeat at Anfield with their season reaching defining moments on three fronts. This has been achieved with a solid, if unspectacular, clean sheet in the goalless draw at home to Manchester United and then by exacting revenge on Liverpool with an FA Cup fifth round victory at the Emirates. So with the Premier League ship steadied and FA Cup progress secured, the greatest test of all now comes in the shape of a last-16 Champions League meeting with Bayern, arguably Europe's finest side now under the guidance of coach Pep Guardiola, twice a winner in this competition with Barcelona. And with confidence being rebuilt in the past week, can Arsenal take further solace in their victory in The ...
Arsenal, Man U in crucial clash LONDON, FEB 10, 2014, REUTERS: AA David Moyes Arsenal and Manchester United will be out to make amends after a weekend of damaging results when they meet at Emirates in the Premier League on Wednesday. Arsenal lost top spot in the league after a 5-1 humiliation by a rampant Liverpool at Anfield, with their previously much-praised defence being torn to shreds as they conceded four goals in the first 20 minutes. Manager Arsene Wenger called the performance "feeble", and will be hopeful the defeat won't signal the end of Arsenal's title hopes as they face a run of matches taking in United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton by early March. Defender Per Mertesacker admitted the loss was a major setback, but called on Arsenal to summon the spirit they showed after December's 6-3 loss to Manchester City, when they went on to win six of their next eight matches. "We feel very bad at the moment, disappointed with our performance right from the start," the Germa ...

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has capped off a brilliant debut season at the Emirates by being named the club’s Player of the Year. The Spaniard beat Laurent Koscielny to the award after receiving over 50-percent of the votes and continues to impress in north London. Cazorla played every single one of the Gunners’ 38 Premier League matches in 2012/13 following his £16.7m transfer from La Liga side Malaga, scoring 12 goals and providing the same amount of assists. Despite operating behind the front-man the 28-year-old was Arsenal’s second top goal scorer in the league, with only Theo Walcott ahead of him. Manager Arsene Wenger has come under some criticism this campaign after failing to deliver a trophy to the club for the eighth successive year, but in Cazorla the Frenchman has still shown he has an eye for talent. “He is right footed but when you watch him play you don’t know. It shows how important that is in the modern midfield,” the manager said on the club’s website. “Glenn Hoddle ...

The 23-year-old, who joined the Gunners from Southampton in January 2006, has made 244 first-team appearances for Arsenal, scoring 56 goals, and is the club's leading goalscoring in the 2012/13 season with 14 goals. Manager Arsene Wenger has already secured new contracts for Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson this season, and Walcott represents an important piece for an Arsenal side that has lost star players like Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas in recent years.
Wenger will only buy 'right players' Manager Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal will only move in the January transfer window for the right player. The Gunners are widely expected to strengthen this month, having already started to free-up space in the squad by off-loading Marouane Chamakh and Johan Djourou. While Wenger has been linked with David Villa, Adrian Lopez, Lucas Biglia and Yann M'Vila, the Arsenal manager will only be tempted should a player of the required quality become available. "We are on the market and if we find the right players, we will do something", Wenger told Arsenal Player. Wenger is said to be keen on Villa, who was a substitute for Barcelona's 4-0 win over Espanyol at the weekend as he continues his reintegration after a spell out with a broken leg. However, club president Sandro Rosell insists the 31-year-old, signed in a £31million deal from Valencia in 2010, is going nowhere. Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1, Rosell said: "I completely rule out the transfer of Villa du ...
Arsenal are leading the chase for £12m rated Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila who has arrived at Arsenal for a medical tomorrow. The 22-year-old spoke to Sky Sports and said: “If the club receive a good offer and I like the destination then I will go, there is no doubt about that.” Manager Arsene Wenger has been voicing his criticism of fans’ transfer expectations with a tongue in cheek comment yesterday that suggested that supporters would only be happy if the club signed Lionel Messi. However, the signing of M’Vila would greatly reassure fans that the club is heading in the right direction. The tough-tackling midfielder is wanted by QPR and Spurs but is adamant that he wants to join a club playing in the Champions League. The 22-year-old has been touted as being exactly what Arsenal need after too many limp performances this season. The departure of Alex Song to Barcelona in the summer has left the Gunners a little short of midfield bite. Song averaged 2.8 tackles made per game for Arsenal last ...
Possible movers and shakers in January ARSENAL Manager Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen across the board to breathe fresh life into Arsenal's push for a top four finish. A striker tops Wenger's shopping list, with David Villa a possible target. POTENTIAL DEPARTURES Marouane Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin, Andre Santos, Johan Djourou, Sebastien Squillaci. Aston Villa Aston Villa manager Paul Lamb.ert spent £23million during the summer, placed his trust in youth and fielded the youngest ever Premier League side this season with an average age of less than 24. Manchester City's 20-year-old striker John Guidetti is a possible loan target while Dnipro's £2million-rated midfielder Derek Boateng is also on Lambert's radar. POTENTIAL DEPARTURES Darren Bent, Charles N'Zogbia. CHELSEA Interim manager Rafael Benitez has all but confirmed Chelsea are trying to sign a new striker but it remains to be seen whether they will spend big on the likes of Radamel Falcao or look for a cut-price alternative, such as Demba Ba ...
Manager Arsene Wenger hopes 2013 will be the year that Arsenal confirm all the promise the Frenchman believes his team have. The Gunners head to Southampton on New Year's Day on the back of a thrilling 7-3 win over Newcastle, which was a fourth straight Barclays Premier League success. "My hopes (for the new year) are that the win (over Newcastle) will give even more confidence, desire and ambition to our team, and that 2013 will confirm we are a great team," Wenger told Arsenal Player. Theo Walcott bagged an impressive hat-trick against Newcastle and is relishing a chance to shine in his preferred central attacking role. Despite the England international, 23, having yet to agree terms on a new contract with the Gunners, Wenger is glad to see Walcott enjoying his football. "I have worked with Theo for seven years and the fact that he had an exceptional game against Newcastle will not influence me more or less - if he had played a disastrous game, I would still have wanted him to sign with the same intensi ...
ARSENAL are set to announce that five of their young stars have signed new contracts. But Theo Walcott is not among them... yet. Midfield ace Jack Wilshere leads the way, having agreed an £80,000-a-week, five-year deal, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson have also accepted terms. Manager Arsene Wenger hopes the statement of intent by the quintet, particularly 20-year-old Wilshere’s decision to pledge his future to the club, will convince contract rebel Walcott that his future lies at the Emirates. Walcott, 23, got his wish to play through the middle in Monday’s 5-2 win at Reading, where he scored the last goal. He wants Wenger to give him a regular run as the main striker. But, equally, he believes he is worth more than the £75,000 a week currently on the table.

IS ROMAN ABRAMOVICH GONNA LOOSE OUT ON PEP? Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has been the most sought after manager in the world since his departure from Catalonia in May of this year. However, after continued debate over where he could possibly land, it appears that sources close to the Guardiola camp told the Mirror on Dec. 12, 2012 that Arsenal are his top choice when he comes back in the coming months. The Gunners have had a rough season and with continued runs of poor form and their most recent loss to League Two club Bradford City in the Capital One Cup hanging over the head of Manager Arsene Wenger, there looks to have been never a better time to hear of Guardiola’s interest. Taking over at Chelsea after the interim period of Rafael Benitez has been one of the biggest rumors for Guardiola in recent weeks. However, a club such as Chelsea would not be the right fit for a manager of his style. It takes time to change a club’s philosophy. Guardiola is much a manager about playing a certain wa ...

Chamberlain Next To Show Unrest Over Contract Issues? Arsenal have opened talks with youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain over a new contract but risk another contract wrangle after offering him less than several ‘flops’. Manager Arsene Wenger is wanting to reward the 19-year-old with a new bumper contract for his meteoric rise to the first team over the past 15 months. Chamberlain is currently on £15,000-a-week and Arsenal have so far offered to treble his wages to £45,000-a-week. This offer may sound fair for a 19-year-old, but when you consider the fact Chamberlain is now an important member of the first team squad and an England squad regular, together with the fact that fringe players such as Sebastien Squillaci, Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh are all on £50-£60,000-a-week, it’s easy to see why the Oxe’s representatives are holding out for more. It is claimed that his agents are looking for him to be moved to a deal that’s at least on par with the trio, but an offer of £60,000-a-we ...

Gunners midfielder nearing long awaited return. Jack Wilshere is ready to hand Arsenal and England a huge boost and return for the final four games of the season. The midfielder has been out all season with an ankle injury but could be back for the showdown against Chelsea on April 21. Manager Arsene Wenger said: ‘He is back with the ball and, for us, that is a huge step. ‘We can say, if all goes well now, in three weeks he will be back with the squad. Then another two weeks to get fit. If Wilshere returns for Arsenal’s Champions League push, he could also play a part for England at Euro 2012 this summer. And Wenger says he will not stop Wilshere from flying to Poland and Ukraine if he is fit. ‘I will intervene only if I believe medically he is at risk. He is an England player,’ he said. ‘If he has played games before the end of the season it is a possibility. If not, I don’t think it’s realistic.’

Great win for Arsenal last night NEIL PIETERSEN! Now for MAN UNITED on Saturday...who knows bru! Arsenal battled from 4-0 down to beat top-flight rivals Reading 7-5 on Tuesday, powering their way into the League Cup quarterfinals after one of the most extraordinary matches in the competition's 52-year history. Manager Arsene Wenger said last week that the League Cup was at the bottom of his priority list and it looked it as his second-string Arsenal team conceded four goals in the opening 37 minutes at the Madejski Stadium.

Manager Arsene Wenger shares the concerns of Arsenal fans - and accepts his side have little margin for further error if they are to stay in contention for the Barclays Premier League.
Arsenal were left 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after being stunned by Norwich, who won their first top-flight game of the season. Grant Holt put the home side ahead when he slotted in after keeper Vito Mannone had parried Alexander Tettey's shot. Michael Turner headed wide for the Canaries as the subdued Gunners struggled to create chances. Mikel Arteta had a late shot saved by John Ruddy but Norwich held firm to secure the victory. Arsenal had seen Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United win before their game at Carrow Road but could not match the results of their rivals as they dropped further off the Premier League pace. Manager Arsene Wenger's desperation to shake his side out of their stupor even stretched to giving attacking midfielder Serge Gnabry, 17, his league debut, although the move proved in vain as his side suffered their first away defeat this season. Wenger left Jack Wilshere on the bench on his return from 14 months out with ankle and knee injuries, and his side ...

Manager Arsene Wenger has intimated that he has already made provisions for Van Persie's departure with the signings of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. However, there must be question marks as to whether Arsenal have sufficient strength in depth up front given their struggles in that department last season. With Podolski equally capable of playing on the left and Giroud untested in the Premier League, Wenger may still look to recruit. Arsenal have been strongly linked with versatile Belgian forward Kevin Mirallas for some time and could now make their move.
Arsenal have Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila on their radar as a replacement for imminent Barcelona signing Alex Song. Arsenal could yet bring in another defensive midfielder and though their interest in M'Vila has waned through the summer, they would bid if the French club would accept £8m. Consistency : Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger reacts during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on December 18, 2011 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images) Alex Livesey/Getty Images When trying to summarise Wenger, one thing that cannot be denied under any circumstances is his consistency. Namely in league competition, wherein Arsenal have never finished lower than fourth whilst under Wenger's jurisdiction. Similarly, the last time Arsenal failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League was the 1999-2000 season—and even then, the club reached the final of Europe's second-best club competition, the UEFA Cup, only to suffer shootout heartbreak to Galatasaray in Copenhagen. Though his detractors will perhaps rightly point towards Arsenal's current trophy drought, seven years seems like nothing when compared to Manchester City's 35-year wait for a major trophy, for example. It seems like even less when put into the context of *** ...
Throw-in Segment: sing along Thursday, Arsenal's impending signings of Santi Cazorla and Nuri Sahin are a considerable statement of intent and execution. The Cazorla deal should be completed by the end of this week for around £18million and the Londoners will then turn their attention to capturing Sahin from Real Madrid on a season-long loan. It is the knock-on effect of these two players moving to Emirates Stadium – and the enticing possibilities which it provides for the team - that is generating such excitement, not only among supporters but the players too. It is understood that the atmosphere was different at the club's London Colney training ground on Wednesday. It is said to have felt re-energised and uplifted. Manager Arsene Wenger was able to put his entire squad through their paces for the first time in pre-season, bar those still recovering from injury, such as Jack Wilshere. The 24 players who toured Asia returned to training following a two-day break and joined those who had been left behi ...

ARSENAL ON THE VERGE OF SIGNING GIROUD Arsenal have been given the ‘go-ahead’ to sign 25-year-old French striker Olivier Giroud, a member of the French squad for the Euro Championship. Giroud was already enthused about a possible move to the North London club, and now that talks are near conclusion, he intends to move irrespective of the amount of fee forked out by the Gunners. Montpellier manager Rene Girard would have been more than happy to retain the striker as he scored 25 goals for the club this season, but has conceded Giroud’s likelihood to move. The Gunners have already signed German forward Lucas Podolski, and to strengthen their attack further, they are now welcoming Giroud to the Emirates Stadium, although this move points at Robin Van Persie’s departure from the club. Manager Arsene Wenger has seemingly found the perfect substitute for current ace forward Robin Van Persie, but the squad will have a catch if Van Persie decides to stay back, as Podolski and the Dutchman basically play o ...
