Orlando Pirates' Senzo Meyiwa and Oupa Manyisa extended their appearances record for games in a PSL season to 50 in Saturday's 3-1 win over Golden Arrows in Durban. The duo recently elbowed out Themba Mnguni's haul of 48 starts that he achieved during the 1997-98 season when he featured in every official match for Mamelodi Sundowns. With the Nedbank Cup Final still to come on Saturday, the Bucs pair appear certain to stretch their tally to 51 starts - a mark without equal since the PSL's inception in 1996. The two players have only missed two games of Pirates' marathon campaign, in which the club has reached the finals of all four competitions - MTN8, 2013 CAF Champions League, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup - they have entered this season. Goalkeeper Meyiwa missed the League defeats against Mpumalanga Black Aces and Polokwane City, while midfielder Manyisa missed the two League fixtures against Bloemfontein Celtic, both of which Pirates also lost. They competed in all 10 Champions League games; four in ...
PSL Twenty-three goals were scored in eight games on the final day of the Absa Premiership season on Saturday. With champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, already decided after the mid-week game, much of the interest was focused on top eight positions and who would be in the relegation play-offs. Sundowns came up against a spirited Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium, and needed an injury team goal from captain Alje Schut to rescue a 1-1 draw after Heinrich Isaacks had given the Team of Choice an early lead. Second-placed Kaizer Chiefs ended their season with an emphatic 3-0 win over AmaZulu, third-placed Wits won 1-0 away at sixth-placed Bloemfontein Celtic, and Orlando Pirates made sure of a fourth-place finish with a 3-1 win over already-relegated Golden Arrows. Supersport United jumped to fifth with a 4-2 win over Polokwane City, who dropped into the play-off spot, after being leap-frogged by Free State Stars who beat Moroka Swallows 3-0. Mpumalanga Black Aces dropped to seventh after they lost 1-0 t ...
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter insists that dropping below Mamelodi Sundowns on the Premier Soccer League table does not mark the end of their title charge. The Glamour Boys have led the race for league honours for most of the season, but their 1-0 defeat to Mpumalanga Black Aces on Wednesday, coupled with Sundowns' victory over Bloemfontein Celtic, saw the Brazilians take over at the top of the table. Chiefs still have a game in hand over Sundowns, and Baxter feels that falling behind is not the end of the world. "No, it's not all lost," Baxter commented after Wednesday's loss. "But we are making it difficult for ourselves, aren't we? Two 1-0 defeats at home, that's not the form of a team that has aspirations to win the championship." However, the Englishman admits that if his side continue to put in performances like the one in midweek, or in Saturday's loss to Sundowns, they will not win the league. "In terms of mathematics, it's still a long way to go but we will have to play and show a lot more ch ...

CHIEFS HAMMER CELTIC ! By ' Kaizer Chiefs stretched their lead at the top of Absa Premiership table following an incredible 3-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic at the FNB Stadium last night. Chiefs are nine points clear ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns with 43 points from 19 games, but the Brazilians have two games in hand. Chiefs had more ball possession from the start in a bid to penetrate the Celtic defence lead by captain Clayton Daniels. Amakhosi midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala almost broke the stalemate in the fifth minute but his shot was easily saved by goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb. Celtic striker Joel Mogorosi fluffed a great chance to grab the opener in the 22nd minute when he shot way off target. Tshabalala missed another opportunity to break the deadlock in the 28th minute when he shot over the crossbar after getting into a good scoring position. Chiefs continued to dominate but they could not get past the stubborn Celtic rear-guard. The Celtic defence finally cracked in the 43rd minute ...
Both Supersport United and Platinum Stars will be hoping to jump up to third place in the PSL standings with wins over Black Aces and Bloemfontein Celtic tonight. Cavin Johnson’s Matsatsantsa currently occupy fourth place on the table, with 26 points, two points behind AmaZulu and five points adrift of second placed Mamelodi Sundowns. Meanwhile, Allan Freese’s Dikwena are one place below SuperSport, on the same amount of points, but with a game in hand on their Tshwane-based rivals. Tonight the two sides will know that, with Usuthu not in action until Saturday, they can both jump ahead of Craig Rosslee’s side if they manage to claim wins. SuperSport welcome Black Aces to Lucas Moripe Stadium, while Stars host Celtic at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, with both sets of games commencing at 19h30. A win for both teams would take them up to 29 points, two points off Sundowns, as they look to keep up the chase for the league’s top spot.
"Kaizer Chiefs continue their pursuit of Mamelodi Sundowns' record for most consecutive PSL wins when they take on Soweto neighbours Moroka Swallows tonight. Chiefs have won seven games on the trot, leaving them four short of Downs' unmatched run. The Brazilians achieved the feat between January and April 2007 as Gordon Igesund led them to the league title. Amakhosi will need to beat Swallows, Supersport United, Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Platinum Stars to better the mark. Chiefs have some cause for hope against Swallows, a side they have dominated in recent times. The teams drew 1-1 in the first round in August, but before that the Glamour Boys registered six straight victories against the Birds dating back to 2010. Aside from Downs’ remarkable run, Bidvest Wits won nine games in a row between January and March 2003 under Roger De Sa, while Trott Moloto’s Umtata Bush Bucks started the first PSL season in 1997 with eight consecutive wins inside the first 10 matches."

Late transfers to look out for JAN 31, 2014 | NICK SAID | 0 COMMENTS A RELATIVELY quiet January Transfer Window will slam shut today when the Premier Soccer League offices close at 5pm, leaving clubs with just hours to make final additions to their squads ... and it seems there are three more big deals possible. inShare BIDING TIME: Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela. The clubs met earlier this week to thrash out a deal that would see the player end his Naturena nightmare ahead of the end of his contract in June, and join Pirates immediately rather than wait until next season. Majoro would be the first player to be transferred between the two Soweto giants since Jimmy Tau in 2005. Ama . ...

Why Mathoho's contract was extended Kaizer Chiefs feel the contract extension that Mulomowandau Mathoho has signed sends a bold statement to all clubs that have been hovering on the horizon in a bid to entice him away that the towering defender’s heart is firmly in Naturena. Mathoho last month agreed to a new deal that will keep him at Chiefs up to June 2017. The 23 year-old had been previously on a contract that was running up to June 2015 but with the new deal the club feels in as far as domestic football is concerned Mathoho is a ‘Khosi for Life’. Mamelodi Sundowns have for long desired to lure the defender to Chloorkop since he was at Bloemfontein Celtic. “They have tried before when he was at Celtic and even now but we this time we have put a nail on it to say that he is staying. “We have put the nail on Mathoho to avoid these other clubs trying to disturb him the same way that they did when he was still at Bloemfontein Celtic. He had a contract up to 2015 and now expires 2017. “I know th ...
Chiefs and Downs back in training 2014-01-06 Both champions Kaizer Chiefs and their closest challengers Mamelodi Sundowns went back to work at the weekend and will make a decision in the next day or two on whether they will go away for part of the preparations for the second half of the season. Both clubs started on Saturday as they eye a potentially decisive showdown in the Absa Premiership race at Loftus Versfeld on January 23 but without five players each who have gone off to the African Nations Championship (Chan). Also back were third-placed Bidvest Wits, even though they do not play a league game until early next month. All three clubs might yet move away from their Gauteng headquarters for a camp but were not yet decided. Club spokesmen said decisions would be made in the next few days. Wits could be headed to Nelspruit. Orlando Pirates start their work tomorrow morning. Fourth-placed Moroka Swallows, Supersport United, AmaZulu, University of Pretoria, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Polokwane City and stru ...
South African striker, Dino Ndlovu, will be keen to fast-track his Maccabi Haifa exit after he was racially abused after a training session in Israel. The 23-year-old has had a tough time in recent months, with Head Coach, Arik Benado, failing to give him a chance to prove himself in the first team, despite his impressive goal tally last season. Now, with the Israeli Transfer Window opening on January 9th, the forward will be hoping to speed up his departure after an unsavoury encounter with some of the Haifa supporters. The player was abused during Saturday’s training session, with fans throwing fireworks at him and telling him to go home. Then, on the way out of training Ndlovu was threatened by fans who allegedly told him to go back to home to Uganda and were attempting to goad him into fighting with them. After driving off it is alleged that the Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic man has also received death threats from fans who have gotten hold of his contact details and called him on ...

All 15 players selected from Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic, Pretoria University & Platinum Stars have arrived for camp. Kaizer Chiefs states that their players will only join other players at the camp after Bafana Bafana's three Group A matches. Wits University refuses to release their players (including Moeneeb Josephs who has indicated that he wished to be selected to play for Bafana Bafana again). Good luck Bafana Bafana!
Our Crew looks at four coaches that are under pressure to hit the ground running when the Premiership resumes after the festive break. Clint Larsen (Maritzburg United) Clinton Larsen must be wary of any pink flyers in his post of late, having picked up five points - with a single win - in nine games since returning to Maritzburg United in mid October. The ex-Bloemfontein Celtic mentor's predecessor Ernst Middendorp, who he effectively swapped jobs with, accumulated eight points - and two victories - from his seven matches in charge of United. Larsen has sought to implement a more attacking game than Middendorp, but with recognised strikers Yakubu Mohammed and Terrence Mandaza scoring one goal between them - with the former netting on debut on the opening day of the season - the injury-enforced absence of the versatile Ashley Hartog is being keenly felt. Larsen's men can draw some encouragement from drawing 2-2 at high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns last time out, a result which ended a five-game losing streak. ...

Defender Lucky Lekgwathi has broken Calvin Marlin’s record of most top-flight starts by a player still active in the PSL. Lekgwathi started for the 378th time, one more than Mpumalanga Black Aces reserve goalkeeper Marlin, in Bucs' 3-2 League defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday at Orlando Stadium. Marlin last played a game for Mamelodi Sundowns on April 21 last year, while he has featured just 19 times since May 2009. Lekgwathi, who has 388 top-flight outings in total, made his first PSL start for Ria Stars in July 2000, two years after making his professional debut as a substitute for Real Rovers. The 37-year-old went on to make 61 starts for Stars before switching to Bucs in 2002. He has made 317 starts for the Buccaneers, 58 less than the retired Williams Okpara, who holds the club record. Lekgwathi, capped 14 times for Bafana Bafana, and Brett Evans are the only South Africans to play over 300 games for one club in the PSL era, which started in 1996. Billiat fitness worry 2013-11-29 IN-FORM Khama Billiat will face a late fitness test ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns' league fixture against high flyers Moroka Swallows this weekend. The midfield dynamo injured an ankle in a friendly match against Bloemfontein Celtic last Sunday, casting doubts over his availability for the Absa Premiership clash. Log leaders Sundowns host Swallows at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday. Kickoff is at 3.30pm. Though the team doctor is yet to clear him, Billiat, says he feels OK and would play if included in the matchday squad. "I'm no longer in pain. Actually, it's not that bad now and I think I'll be fine for Sunday," Billiat said yesterday. "We haven't played a league match in a while, but I'm quite confident I will be up to the challenge against Swallows. "They are a good, balanced team made up of experienced players. Their position on the log reflects the hard work they have been putting in," he said. The Zimbabwean international has hit scintillating form this season as he consiste ...

Billiat returns with a bang AFTER missing last Wednesday’s win over Free State Stars, Khama Billiat’s return made the biggest impact on his return to Mamelodi Sundowns when they beat Pretoria University 3-1 on Saturday. Zimbabweans Abroad with Wellington Toni Billiat was involved in a car crash and as a precautionary measure was given two days off and missed the 2-1 win over Stars. But when he did return on Saturday, Sundowns knew what they had been missing from the Zimbabwe international. He created the opener for fellow country-man Cuthbert Malajila in the third minute before he grabbed his own in the 29th minute to beat another fellow countryman Washington Arubi in goal for AmaTuks. The win ensured that Sundowns remained on top of the standings with 20 points from nine matches while AmaTuks are 13th with just eight points from nine games. AmaZulu, captained by Carlington Nyadombo picked up a point in the 1-1 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday with former Dynamos hitman Rodreck Mutuma played ...
The PSL’s Most Fouled Earlier today the Siya crew looked at which players in the PSL commit the most fouls and now we look at which players are fouled the most. The crew took at look at our Soccer-Laduma stats in order to see which of the players in the PSL are fouled the most regularly and which team they play for. Somewhat surprisingly, it is two Ajax Cape Town players that top the list as the most fouled, with Franklin Cale and Granwald Scott both being fouled, on average, three times per game. Bloemfontein Celtic man, John Arwuah, closely follows the pair with 2.75 per game, while Lerato Chabangu, of Moroka Swallows, is fouled around 2.7 times on average in the PSL. Fifth on the list is Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Khama Billiat, who is illegally halted 2.63 times. Interestingly, looking at the top 25 most fouled players in the PSL, only four, Chabangu, Billiat, Tsepo Masilela and Innocent Mdledle are from the current top three teams in the league. Masilela, of Kaizer Chiefs, is fouled 1.91 times pe ...

Downs keen to recover AFTER tasting defeat for the first time this season in Moruleng on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns return to the solace of the Absa Premiership looking to keep their unbeaten record intact. Ousted by Platinum Stars from the Telkom Knockout, The Brazilians will hope to use tonight's clash against AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria as a springboard to get back on the winning path. Kickoff is at 7.30pm. The Brazilians were the toast of the town two weeks ago when they bulldozed Bloemfontein Celtic 4-0 in the same cup competition but were brought down to earth by Dikwena at the weekend. Champagne signing Khama Billiat - wonderful and mesmerising against Celtic - was reduced to a mere mortal, missing two attempts at the same penalty kick in the 2-1 defeat. But players of Billiat's class do not stay down for too long - at his best he is almost impetuous with his trickery and as elusive as a hare outside the opposition box. His partnership with Dove Wome on attack is threatening, but finish ...
Mashamaite praise for Komphela -Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite has heaped praise on Free State Stars boss Steve Komphela. The two teams will meet in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal on Sunday afternoon at the Charles Mopeli Stadium and Mashamaite says thet last season’s ‘Double’ winners know they will be in for a battle. “We are excited about this match because we are playing against a Stars side that is coached by one of the most intelligent coaches in the league,” Mashamaite told reporters. “They know us and they never want to lose to us, but as Chiefs we always go into each and every competition to win.” Mashego - There was more competition at Pirates -Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego says that he feels there was more competition for places in his time at Orlando Pirates than there is at Mamelodi Sundowns at the moment. The striker made the bold statement at a press conference ahead of ‘Downs crucial Telkom Knockout tie against Platinum Stars. Bucs up against history -Tun ...
The recent emergence of aggressive and perhaps over-the-top tackling appears to be on the increase in the PSL. A spate of injuries has occurred with certain teams being more affected than others. In last Tuesday’s match against Mpumalanga Black Aces, Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola appeared to be lucky to escape a broken ankle after a debatable mistimed lunge by Clifford Ngobeni. The offence went unpunished by the referee. Read: Bucs Beat Aces In Thriller Onyekachi Okonkwo also seemed to stamp on Pirates defender Rooi Mahamutsa earlier in the clash in what appeared to be an unprovoked act. Such an act is generally punishable by a red card, however the Nigerian escaped serious censure. Additionally, Maritzburg United’s Ruben Cloete recently suffered a fractured cheekbone after a dangerous collision with Platinum Stars defender Vuyo Mere. In a recent clash between Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns, Hlompho Kekana seemed lucky not to suffer a broken leg after what looked to be an over the ...
Mosimane expects more vintage Pitso Mosimane says Mamelodi Sundowns' brand-new ensemble have yet to fully settle despite their champagne performance against Bloemfontein Celtic in Botshabelo on Sunday. As is their annual custom, Sundowns fielded eight new signings in the 4-0 Telkom Knockout win over Celtic but this time most of them came good. The defensive machinery was screwed on tight while the midfield oozed horsepower. Right-back Bryce Moon was like a Gautrain down his flank while former University of Pretoria protégé Bongani Zungu, playing in a deeper midfield role, proved his defensive worth. And then there was the Dove Wome and Khama Billiat attacking show, which would have sent warning shots to the other PSL teams fighting for accolades this season. They showed a synergy that usually takes teams years to develop and they didn't even need former captain Teko Modise, who was an unused substitute in Free State. "We are not yet settled - the day we settle we'll be much better than this," Mosimane i ...

And he’s worth every million Mamelodi Sundowns paid for the Zimbabwean football star from Ajax Cape Town and he has started repaying the Brazilians. On Sunday, he scored twice in Sundowns’ 4-0 mauling of Bloemfontein Celtic in the first round of the Telkom Knockout, the second being an assist from fellow countryman Cuthbert Malajila, who played 74 minutes of the match. There is still no place for veteran holding midfielder Esrom Nyandoro, who has just returned from injury, on the Sundowns bench. There was no place either for Rodreck Mutuma in the Celtic line up. And the 3-0 loss marked the end of Clinton Larsen as Head Coach of Celtic, meaning Mutuma will now have to work extra hard to impress the next man in charge, likely Manqoba Mngqithi, who also quit Golden Arrows. For now, Celtic assistant coach Boebie Solomons will take over in a caretaker capacity. Knowledge Musona was also on target, scoring the th ...

Igesund Understands Withdrawals Bafana Bafana Head Coach, Gordon Igesund, says that he fully understands why a handful of PSL outfits decided to withdraw players from his Cosafa Cup squad, explaining that he may have done the same if he was in their shoes. Igesund named his 20-man squad for this month's tournament last week, however the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Supersport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic didn't want to release all of the selected players, forcing the national coach to make changes. Now, after naming nine new players for the squad, Igesund says that he completely understands why the clubs would decide against releasing their players for the tournament due to the fact that it's not an official FIFA date. Igesund said, "I fully understand the reasons why some of the coaches or clubs are pulling their players out, it's really not a problem. I fully understand that it's not a FIFA weekend and I must say the clubs have been very supportive. "If I was a coach and it was two weeks ...
Mamelodi Sundowns have thrown a towel in their efforts to sign the Bloemfontein Celtic defender Thabo Nthethe according to one of the Sundowns officials. Nthethe has been linked with a move away from Celtic, and Sundowns were interested in the player who publicly revealed that he is not ready to play for any of the Gauteng teams. “We are not hoping to sign Nthethe anymore. We have other plans in mind,” the Sundowns official said With Musa Nyatama currently at Celtic for trials, one would have thought that the two clubs may strike a swap deal that would see Nthethe at Chloorkop next season, but Sundowns maintain that they are looking to sell Nyatama outright. “Nyatama is in Bloemfontein as you know, but we are not using him to get Nthethe. We will sell him to Celtic if Clinton Larsen likes him. We are not hoping for a swap deal,” added the Downs official. Nthethe has also been targeted by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, although AmaKhosi have been secretive about their interest in the player.

Meet Sundowns, the Izikhothane of the PSL Posted: December 2nd, 2012 | By Sbu Mjikeliso I had a laughing – then coughing – fit when fellow scribe and soccer analyst Tso joked that Mamelodi Sundowns were “Dikhothane tsa Pitori”. Now if you have just landed from Mars, let me explain: Izikhothane is a group of youths practising a vile trend of buying expensive material – clothes, food, anything you can think of- mostly with money given to them by their parents and they go about destroying it as if it were worthless. The other day they were tearing R100 bank notes for kicks. Well, the Motsepe Foundation (I guess not content with spending millions on under-performing players) hosted a concert in East London a day after Sundowns’ 1-0 Telkom Knockout Final defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic. Now I’m sure that the concert was organised months before the final but why does it appear like the Sundowns family are more adept at organising lavish parties [insert Miss Mamelodi Sundowns pageant here] than they ...

Those that watched the Telkom Knockout Final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic should have made their way to the top level of the Gateway Centre in Umhlanga to witness some superb football between Brazilian Soccer Schools and Riverside Shooting Stars Academy. It wasn't long before the BSS boys showed the best of Brazilian Samba and Barcelona's Tika-Taka rolled into one. Riverside Shooting Stars are the league and cup champs so were decent opposition and, unlike us, are used to regular competitive matches, but they could not keep up with the precise technical ability, speed and movement of our players. We were honestly a different class altogether.
South African football club Mamelodi Sundowns has sacked manager Johan Neekens after the team lost 1-0 to Celtic in Telkom Knockout Final on Saturday. Bloemfontein Celtic, where flames defender Limbikani Mzava plays, scored a controversial goal which prompted debate among football analysts. Mzava was stretched off in the second half after sustaining an injury.
It will be naïve to suggest that Johan Neeskens departure from Sundowns came as a surprise. Nor would it be foolhardy to think Telkom Knockout Final loss to Bloemfontein Celtic was a spark. An excuse to fire him perhaps but it certainly had been expected. One wonders if he would have stayed even if he had won. A vain ‘Downs media release timidly suggested Motsepe paid tribute to the Dutch man. “Johan Neeskens is a good coach whose experience and track record speaks for itself. He sacrificed and worked hard for the success of the Club. Johan will always have a special place at Mamelodi Sundowns and I wish him the very best with his future and career”. The press release quoted Patrice Motsepe. No sooner had news of his sacking sank, then came announcement that former Bafana mentor, Pitso Mosimane has been roped in with immediate effect. Could it be that Mosimane appointment was finalised midweek and in a feeble attempt not to defocus the team from the final, his announcement was delayed till after th ...

Mamelodi Sundowns receive a big boost ahead of the Telkom Knockout clash against Bloemfontein Celtic, with the return of Teko Modise and Nyasha Mushekwi from injury. The pair picked up knocks in a league match against Amazulu and have been cleared for the cup final. It's not all good news though for Coach Johan Neeskens' side, as fast-as-bullet wing-back, Punch Masenamela has been ruled out of the match, and is due for knee scope. Katlego Mphela has fully recovered from a knee operation he underwent, and is now working hard to get back to full fitness. Dennis Onyango is also doing well after recovering from a rib injury, he picked up at training. The Ugandan International has started light training.
Who will win the Telkom Knockout Final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic tonight?
Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Alex 'Barnes' Bapela says he shares the sentiments by Johan Neeskens that the latter will quit his job if the club fail to win any silverware this season. Neeskens reiterated his stance on Wednesday ahead of the Telkom Knockout Final on Saturday against Bloemfontein Celtic in Durban and Bapela says he could have said the same. "I think it is good for him to say that and even if I was him, I would have said it," Bapela says. "The more you have pressure, the harder you push yourself to achieve success," he argues. Bapela adds: "In football, there is always pressure and pressure has to be your middle name. Him (Neeskens) being under pressure means it pushes Sundowns to go the extra mile to work very hard." Kick-off for the decider will be 20h15

from kickoff.re di bosso Despite the club's mediocre performances in recent League campaigns, Chiefs still have 10 PSL titles to their name, making them the most successful club in the competition ahead of Orlando Pirates (who have nine PSL titles) and Mamelodi Sundowns (eight titles). The outcome of Chiefs' match on Saturday against a Bloemfontein Celtic outfit still bubbling with confidence following their 1-0 win over Pirates is likely to give a strong indication of whether or not Baxter can revive the glory days.
