I randomly read this article/story while getting a mani/pedi. At first I was reading it simply for amusement to pass the time. The last paragraph resonated with me for all of my girl friends and acquaintances who have bitterly had her heart broken by some lying jerk. We have the power to choose to learn from our experiences and move on. We have a choice. If you're one of the friends who have been hurt so badly, read this true story. May her power inspire you to do the same for yourself. Love is worth opening up. Love, Crystle - The Accidental Mistress After a lifetime of serial dating, Kym Canter thought she had finally found Mr. Right. Swept up in a whirlwind romance, they planned a happily ever after life together - until one e-mail changed everything. I met Andrew through a dating website last spring. He was good-looking, and we had a lot in common-we were the same age; we'd gone to art school and lived in Los Angeles at the same time; and we were both creative directors, he in television, I at a fashi ...

How many people here would have an interest in a 3 hour workshop in Los Angeles with expert dialect coach Doug Honorof. The window would be the 7 days between June 4 and June 12. The price will depend on whether I can get enough people and just rent the studio - say Voice Trax West or whether I have to ask one of the people who put on classes to share their mailing list. So the more people I can get the less expensive it would be. If there is enough interest we could do more than one. I have been studying with Doug for over two years. He does a five day intensive at Voice One in SFO every year - so will be in the area. He's located in NYC. Go to www.dialectdoug.com for more info on him and let me know

On July 20, 1969, actress Sharon Tate invited her family to 10050 Cielo Drive, a house she rented with her husband Roman Polanski, to watch the moon landing. Huddled with loved ones at the foot of her bed, eight months pregnant with her first child and at the height of her and Polanski's careers, Tate must have felt a particular elation at the prospects of the future as she witnessed Neil Armstrong move slowly across the unfathomed rock on her TV set. With her husband developing a new project in London, she stalled a little in dismissing her guests. But eventually they waved goodbye, exiting into the heat of the Los Angeles summer night, unaware that they’d never see Sharon alive again. Today, August 9th, marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous "Helter Skelter" murders committed by members of the so-called Manson family at the Cielo Drive address in Benedict Canyon. The crime occurred shortly after midnight and resulted in the brutal deaths of five people including Tate, who was 26 years old. In the ...

New York, NY.- Gagosian Gallery presents photographs from The Lost Album of the late Dennis Hopper. This historically significant body of work from the 1960s has not been exhibited in the United States since 1970. Hopper established his reputation as a cult director with Easy Rider (1969), while maintaining his reputation as an edgy character actor with gritty performances in The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), and Hoosiers (1986). Before his rise to Hollywood stardom, he captured the establishment-busting spirit of the 1960s in photographs that travel from Los Angeles to Harlem to Tijuana, and which portray iconic figures including Tina Turner, Andy Warhol, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The Lost Album in its entirety comprises over 400 black and white photographs taken between 1961—when his first wife Brooke Hayward gave him a Nikon camera for his birthday—and 1967. He would not make photographs again until the early 1980s. Exhibited in its entirety, The Lost Album ...
Owen Wilson is reportedly in negotiations for a role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s (The Master) upcoming crime thriller Inherent Vice, based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon.  Although Wilson’s representative declined to comment, it is believed he will play a lead role opposite the exceptional Joaquin Phoenix.  Set in 1970 Los Angeles, Inherent Vice tells the Lebowski-esque story of pot-smoking private investigator Larry “Doc” Sportello (Phoenix) as he investigates the alleged kidnapping of a girl he used to date.  The cast may also include Benicio del Toro, playing a lawyer who helps the protagonist.  Hit the jump for more details. According to The Wrap, Charlize Theron is rumored for the female lead.  Warner Bros. will finance and distribute the film, as opposed to Megan Ellison, who funded Anderson’s previous work The Master with her company Annapurna Pictures.  Anderson will produce the film via his production company Ghoulardi Film Co., along with JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi.  Vice looks ...
QUESTION:  A question for the filmmakers: How did you find the right tone and your voice for this film in terms of the noir aspects and sense of heightened reality?RUBEN FLEISCHER:  For me, this movie was a big opportunity, coming from a comedy background and making the transition to an action drama film.  I had a lot of learning to do in the process.  But luckily the cast was filled with some of the most talented actors you can assemble and I think the authenticity of their performances guided, to a large degree, the feeling of the movie.  But then, for me as a filmmaker, it was just having a real opportunity to stretch my legs with these bigger action sequences and try to make it as exciting and as entertaining as possible.   DAN LIN:  When Kevin and I started looking for directors for this, we had a really specific mission, which is we were telling a period story set in 1940s Los Angeles, but we wanted to make it feel contemporary.  And very much, Ruben’s a contemporary filmmaker, but he had ...

President Obama also stated that South Korea and the U.S. are more united than ever before. UPDATE: May 9th 2013 We have set a travel date of May 26th so both dogs will be coming to Los Angeles then. We were recently informed (by another rescue organization) about a couple of male Jindos in New Mexico that are being kept chained outdoors in a parking lot behind a restaurant. The owner recognizes that this is not a sustainable situation and has agreed to surrender them, and we are working with the local rescue to get these boys to safety ASAP. Whilst we do not need help with pulling these boys, we WILL need financial support and foster homes for them, (we intend to bring them to the Los Angeles area). Please share and network these boys for foster homes NOW! It is not imperative that they stay together. It is quite clear that one especially will need medical care, but we are confident that this is a situation that can be remedied over time! (They will both need standard care too for neutering and vaccinations etc). (Links to our "Foster Application" and "Notes on Fostering", as well as our "Ways ...

Jaclyn Gough I saw Iron Man 3 last night. There’s a scene where the villain talks about how the fortune cookie was actually invented in the U.S. That’s true -- in California. Here are 11 more foreign-sounding foods that were created in the USA: 1. Haagen-Dazs ice cream, invented in the Bronx in 1961. 2. Vichyssoise soup, invented in Manhattan in 1917. 3. The French dip sandwich, invented in Los Angeles in 1908. 4. German chocolate, invented by an American named Sam German in 1852. 5. Chimichanga, invented when an American accidentally dropped a burrito in a deep fryer in 1946. (I doubt it was accidental, we “Americans” love fried food!) 6. The English muffin, invented in New York in 1894. 7. Pasta primavera, invented in New York in the 1970s. 8. The Cuban sandwich, invented in Tampa in the 1880s. 9. General Tso's chicken, invented in New York, sometime in the 1970s. 10. Swiss steak, the first recipe was published in the U.S. in 1915. 11. Doritos, invented at Disneyland in 1964.

If 51 percent of voters remember to show up at the polls, they can legalize pot in a state. But they can’t force cities to accept it…The California Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling that may severely limit marijuana sales. After voters approved medical marijuana in 1996, pot dispensaries popped up everywhere, peddling weed as a cure for every ailment but the munchies. Cities that didn’t want pot peddlers by every school tried to banish them with zoning laws, but pot proponents challenged that as unconstitutional. The case involved the city of Riverside, which has shut down 56 cannabis dispensaries since 2009. The court has ruled that local governments do have the power to zone marijuana dispensaries out of existence. About 200 cities already have, and you can expect more now. As an alternative, cities could allow pot dispensaries and regulate them, but one legal expert said only cities as liberal as Los Angeles would go to the trouble. At last count, L.A. had about 700 medical mari ...

Record: 10-4, second, NFC East Points scored/allowed: 285/218 Coach: Don Coryell Summary: Twenty-seven years after the franchise’s last championship, the league’s oldest team returns to respectability. St. Louis, which won only four games the previous season, reversed its fortunes with a 7-0 start before faltering a bit in the stretch. They dropped their first two to perennial powers Dallas and Minnesota, then suffered a painful 17-13 loss to the Chiefs and an inexplicable 14-0 blanking by New Orleans. In the rematch of their 28-24 loss to the Vikings, Minnesota prevailed handily 30-14. Would a matchup against Los Angeles have gotten the Cards farther? St. Louis found out the following season in a 35-23 loss to the Rams in round one. A quick glance at the schedule suggests this D is going to be suspect — but read on. Offense: 40 Offensive line: 18. Counting my Blessings Volume 5, Chapter 19 June 13 – 16, 2004, Poland. After leaving Kielce, where we successfully defended our festival against right-wing extremists, we arrived back in Warsaw at midnight. I fell asleep by 1:00 a.m, but woke up at 4:00 because of a terrible nightmare where I dreamt skinheads broke through the barrier of security men and beat up the devotees. I sat up on my bed, wide awake, unable to forget the drama of the previous day. I thought about a lecture I had recently heard by Srila Prabhupada where he mentioned that in days of yore people often dreamt about the Lord because of their constant engagement in His service and meditation upon His lotus feet: “In the evening, in the village, everyone would assemble in a place to hear messages from Mahabharata and Ramayana. They would discuss while coming home and would go to bed thinking that memory. So they’d sleep and dream Ramayana and Mahabharata.” [Srila Prabhupada lecture, May 31, 1972, Los Angeles] My mind kept turning. ...

In 1954, Britain's BBC bans the song "Such a Night" by Johnnie Ray after listeners complain about its 'suggestiveness'. Ray's animated stage persona included pounding on his piano, writhing on the floor and even crying, which earned him the nicknames "Mr. Emotion", "The Nabob of Sob", and "The Prince of Wails". In 1959, in Los Angeles, Frank Sinatra recorded "High Hopes." In 1960, the Browns performed "The Old Lamplighter" on CBS-TV's "The Ed Sullivan Show." In 1961, Elvis Presley released the single "I Feel So Bad." In 1962, Beatles manager Brian Epstein had a chance meeting with engineer Ted Huntly at a London record store. Los Angeles, CA - The power of Oxy in tandem with senior fire is a dangerous combination for this Torero team...  For most of the athletes, the race at Occidental College brought their 2013 season to a close... However, to the 9 seniors on the Torero squad, this was the last meet they blazed around the track representing the USD Toreros. As we bid farewell to these irreplaceable seniors, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors give rise to the future of the program.  With a large number of Personal Bests recorded by the underclassmen of this program, the future looks bright for the Toreroes. But much credit must be given to the seniors of this program, who have set the foundation to allow for these moments of success. Without their hard work and dedication for the past four years this Torero program would not have developed into what it is today. It is from the leadership and work ethic of our senior class that this program thrives. Which was clearly shown at the season closer Oxy Invite.  Kicking off th ...

Google's wearable computer, the most anticipated piece of electronic wizardry since the iPad and iPhone, will not go on sale for many months. But the critics are already in a lather. The glasses-like device, which allows users to access the internet, take photos and film short snippets, has been pre-emptively banned by a Seattle bar. Large parts of Las Vegas will not welcome wearers. West Virginia legislators tried to make it illegal to use the gadget, known asGoogle Glass, while driving. "This is just the beginning," said Timothy Toohey, a Los Angeles lawyer specialising in privacy issues. "Google Glass is going to cause quite a brawl." As personal technology becomes increasingly nimble and invisible, Glass is prompting questions of whether it will distract drivers, upend relationships and, above all, strip people of what little privacy they still have in public. A pair of lens-less frames with a tiny computer attached to the right earpiece, Glass is promoted by Google as "seamless and empowering." It ...

Suffice to say, Predator made a lot of money. It was a thrill ride from start to finish, with one of the biggest action stars in the history of ever, and one of the greatest movie monsters from that time. It seemed only natural that a sequel was made, this time trying something a little different. Instead of going back to the jungle for the sequel, they decided to set the film in Los Angeles, in the year 1997, ten years after the original Predator landed. The plot follows an L.A.P.D. lieutenant Michael Harrigan, a tough-guy cop with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. The city has been hit with a massive heat wave, and the streets have erupted into a turf war between Colombian and Jamaican drug cartels. Harrigan and his unit defeat one of the Colombian groups, driving them back into their hideout, where they're all killed by a Predator. Harrigan catches a glimpse of the Predator's camouflaged form on the roof, but dismisses it. He is reprimanded for disobeying orders, and introduced to Special Agent Peter Keyes, ...

On December 8, 1969, a four-hour shootout took place at the Southern California Headquarters of the Black Panther Party. The massive exchange of gunfire was between a cluster of six Panther members who happened to be inside the headquarters and what would ultimately grown to be a force of 200 Los Angeles police officers, including a newly created LAPD team that would have its first real outing on that day. Most dramatically the LAPD deployed its new SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics, a militarized police unit) teams, a warrant, a battering ram, helicopters, a tank, trucks, dynamite, and 400 police officers to raid three L.A. Black Panther Party facilities including the Central Ave. headquarters. The raid bore much similarity to the raid against the Chicago BPP led four days prior by the FBI and Chicago police. For instance, the government's plan called for the police to focus gunfire at chapter leader Geronimo Pratt's bed; however, Pratt was sleeping on the floor at the time. But whereas the Chicago raid ...

A Story by the Duke of Vandals One judge called it “malicious mischief.” Another judge called it “destruction of public property.” In New York City, after the guards caught him in the Museum of Modern Art, the judge reduced the charge to “littering” as a final insult. After the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the judge called what Terry Fletcher did “graffiti.” At the Getty or the Frick or the National Gallery, Terry’s crime was always the same. People just couldn’t agree on what to call it. None of these judges should be confused with the Honorable Lester G. Myers of the Los Angeles County District Court, art collector and downright nice guy. The art critic is not Tannity Brewster, writer and knower of all things cultural. Although Los Angeles has among the highest residential fire rates in the country and among the most stringent fire codes, many area homeowners are woefully unprepared to prevent and detect fires. In an ideal scenario, fire prevention and detection is integrated into the home security in the Los Angeles residence, and the system is monitored around the clock by a state-of-the-art response facility. Home Fires Kill Seven Every Day A recent report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) demonstrates the importance of fire safety. According to U.S. statistics, one in 320 households suffers from a home fire each year, and the financial damages from those fires exceed one billion dollars. More importantly, seven people will die every day in house fires; the elderly are the most likely to die, followed closely by infants and toddlers. Smoking Smoking is still the leading cause of fire-related deaths in the U.S. The NFPA advises that you require all smokers to do so outside. Provide them with an ashtra ...

After a collaborative effort between Chief John Thomas of USC’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Captain Paul Snell of the LAPD, all of the students were released either on bail or their own recognizance. LAPD Officer Carlyle and his partner were first on the scene. Carlyle explained that, initially, he only requested that the party's DJ turn off the amplified sound. The DJ complied; however, when he began making shout-outs using the microphone, Carlyle ordered the police officers to shut the party down. When party attendees “refused to disperse,” Carlyle dispatched a help call and within an hour, 79 police officers from five Los Angeles police divisions had arrived on the scene. Similar to last month’s re ...

See bugs jam on digital signage! A performance art and multimedia installation in Los Angeles is bringing together electronic music, animation and digital signage technology in a distinctly L.A. way. According to The Sonos Studio, which describes itself as "an acoustically-designed gallery that celebrates music listening," the installation called "Bugs" features "a bizarre band of insects brought to life by filmmaker Tom Kuntz in collaboration with electronic musician Dan Deacon." Six large monoliths containing TV screens positioned in a circle immerse visitors in the visual and aural show. Kuntz designed the bugs, Deacon composed a wealth of loops for each, and then [visual effects company] The Mill LA worked its magic with animation and created software to generate randomized playback for the ensembles' many loops. The final result is a perpetually changing installation with literally millions of variations. It is at once bizarre, comedic, and utterly fascinating ... Watch a video of the April 4 opening ...

The morning was lovely in all its sunlit splendor. Every noise was a delight to Thana as her time among human man was limitless now. Her parents Muriel Dark Redeemed and Father Angel Jones Redeemed.. though away on an investigation, had assured her of the safety within their home. She'd been training for some time as to how to behave among mortal man. They were confident she'd be able to walk a few blocks without getting into any serious trouble. However, this day had something else in store entirely. For this day, Los Angeles would come to a screeching halt. ~ ~ ~ One was glad to be among them. With their busy lives and the wonderful noises of human life all 'round. My curiosity got the better and so, one leaves the safety of her family home to explore. My feet were bare and this may cause some humans to be cautious since, they wore shoes. Strange thing was, one had never known what a "shoe" was until her mother had educated me. Typical of me I exit in rapidity.. Laughing out to myself, I grasp the door ...

SANTO COYOTE: fine dining, décor and a show! The real jewel in Guadalajara’s crown – and there are other contenders ¬– is it’s most fabulous nightspot Santo Coyote: a themed restaurant, nightclub, bar and entertainment complex unrivaled even in Los Angeles or New York. The dining area resembles a Mexican rain forest, the tables covered with round thatch roofs – for haute cuisine and traditional south-of-the-border entertainment. A comprehensive bill of fare is offered. But be warned: some of the portions are gargantuan. Dining at Santo Coyote on April 22 was an extraordinary gastronomical delight enhanced with attentive, top-drawer service and an after dinner show of Broadway quality. It is not frightfully expensive. Read all the details, with images and video of the Mariachi dancers at the link below.

Cinco de Mayo   During the French-Mexican War, a poorly supplied and outnumbered Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeats a French army attempting to capture Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. Victory at the Battle of Puebla represented a great moral victory for the Mexican government, symbolizing the country's ability to defend its sovereignty against threat by a powerful foreign nation.   In 1861, the liberal Mexican Benito Juarez became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juarez and his government into retreat.   Certain ...
