Happy birthday to the great blues man Lonnie Brooks (born Lee Baker Jr., December 18, 1933) an American blues singer and guitarist. He was born in Dubuisson, Louisiana, United States. Rolling Stone stated, "His music is witty, soulful and ferociously energetic, brimming with novel harmonic turnarounds, committed vocals and simply astonishing guitar work." The New York Times added, "He sings in a rowdy baritone, sliding and rasping in songs that celebrate lust, fulfilled and unfulfilled; his guitar solos are pointed and unhurried, with a tone that slices cleanly across the beat. Wearing a cowboy hat, he looks like the embodiment of a good-time bluesman." He learned to play blues from his banjo-picking grandfather, but did not think about a professional career until he moved to Port Arthur, Texas in the early 1950s. There he heard live performances by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Long John Hunter and others and began to think about making money from his music. One day, while Brooks ...
RIP Johnny Winter! One of the best slide bluesman ever to walk this earth. There is a lot of history with Johnny and the Brooks family starting back in the 1950's with a young Johnny and Edgar muscling their way through to crowd to get to the front row to see Guitar Junior aka Lonnie Brooks. Their friendship began when both asked a young Guitar Junior for a guitar pick. And the rest was history. Winning a talent show using a couple guitar junior songs to securing the highest paid contract ever by a major label to the highest stardom ever for a rock and roller bluesman. Coming back full circle decades later to record with Lonnie in the studio on The title track "Wound Up Tight" and the movies soundtrack darling "Got Lucky Last Night" then ultimately recording a Lonnie song and making a precedent video of "Don't Take Advantage of Me" for Alligator Records. Johnny Winter thank you for all you have done with keeping the Blues alive ...recording all the great albums with Mr. Richard Shurman and especially my . ...

★ ichiro Profile ★ Fascinated with blues, he headed to Chicago with a change of clothes and a guitar in 1988. Though it was his first time in the states and he knew no one (or much english for that matter), he spent the whole time doing live sessions at Chicago's various blues clubs. (At first he asked to play and before long, he was introduced from club to club) After coming back to Japan, he signed with WEA and released his debut solo album in 1990. The album's rhythm section consisted of Gerry MaCaboy(Bass) and Brendan O'niel(Drums) from the Rory Gallagher Band. That same year, he appeared in the Japan Blues Carnival co-starred by James Cotton and Lonnie Brooks. Ichiro was the first Japanese guitarist to become a Gibson USA/Endorsee. His second album was recorded in LA with Bob Glaub(Bass), Marc Brown(Bass), Chad Cromwell(Drums), Rob Ladd(Drums) and Greg Droman, from the Joe Walsh band, as the engineer. Impressed with ichiro's guitar playing ability, Albert Collins accepted an invitation to play on ...

I just attended Bobby Blue Bland's home going celebration today. I know now, that Bobby is resting in peace. It was so much love for him in the building, you could feel him smiling down. I saw so many of my colleagues. It was great to see everyone celebrating Bobby and his life! Otis Clay moved the whole church and gave me chill bumps when he sang " When The Gates Swing Open"! I feel very honored to have known and to have worked with Bobby Bland, he 'IS' a TRUE American treasure! Bobby was a long time friend of my dad Lonnie Brooks for over almost 50 years. Because of their friendship, Bobby embraced me and my brother Wayne. He would always encourage us to keep the Blues alive. Bobby was just as happy as all of us when Lonnie was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame, that was the type of person he was. Bobby contributed so much to ALL music with his smooth, velvet, soulful and classy voice. He recorded so many great classic songs! He also influenced so many other artist, including myself! So my reflection for the week has been about music. I love music, many different kinds even though I have always been a rock fan, and Blues became my favorite in 2000. I have been fortunate to have seen over 200 concerts since 71', met the Doobies, Mark Farner, Chuck Berry, Bo Didley and Papa John Creech. I have shared music with many people, especially my wife and kids, BFAM Dave and have passed on my love of it to my Grandson. I owe alot to them for putting up with my "Air Instrument antics. But the one person I thank the most is my friend Paul Benjamin. he has given me the opportunity to see and meet some of the finest Blues musicians in the world. Lonnie Brooks, Magic Slim, Eddie Clearwater, Pinetop Perkins, and Keb Moe, to name a few. And I have made friendships along the way, Eddie Shaw, Kenny Neal, Anthony Gomes, Lucky Peterson, Buiscuit Miller, and Larry Garner. Music is definitely "The Medicine" for anything that ails you, sadness, depression, anxiety and it enhances Happiness. Thanks to everyone ...
