See the beauty of Los Angeles from above at the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook above the Hollywood Bowl. Located along the equally scenic Mulholland Drive, the overlook was built for the 1984 Olympics, and continues to draw both visitors and long-time residents. The view here is spectacular. On a clear day, you can look to the east and see Santa Monica and the ocean. Look west to see Glendale, Pasadena, and the Angeles Forest. Look south to view the city skyline down to Long Beach. The view is even more beautiful at night. (The parking lot is closed, but you can take the trail.) Want a better look? There are telescopes for your convenience. What a way to get a bird’s eye view of one of America’s great cities! Hollywood Bowl Overlook 7036 Mulholland Drive Hollywood, CA 90068

...Art Landing posted the following on the Los Angeles discussion board at RadioDiscussions.com the other day. His point resonates with me... Johnny Magnus has replaced Chuck Cecil (on KKJZ -in Long Beach?) --- after the latter decided in January to hang up the earphones at age ninety. I remember when Ceci's "Swingin Years" replaced the canceled NBC Bandstand on KFI nearly sixty ears ago - it had a long run. Magnus of course was part of Gene Autry's team at KMPC. Both Cecil and Magnus are, as has been pointed out in another thread, old time jocks who actually did programs (this as the old fashioned way) rather than being part of a format (which has been the style of recent decades). As has been noted, millennials and generation x’ers don’t think the way their grandparents (read “my generation”) did. Its true. I have 30-something “kids” who borrow my car, whose radio push buttons have a variety of AM stations pre-selected. Inevitably when I get it back the console has been switched over to FM o ...

The taos hum 399Px-Taosnmview The ‘Taos Hum’ is a low-pitched sound heard in numerous places worldwide, especially in the USA, UK, and northern europe. It is usually heard only in quiet environments, and is often described as sounding like a distant diesel engine. Since it has proven indetectable by microphones or VLF antennae, its source and nature is still a mystery. In 1997 Congress directed scientists and observers from some of the most prestigious research institutes in the nation to look into a strange low frequency noise heard by residents in and around the small town of Taos, New Mexico. For years those who had heard the noise, often described by them as a “hum”, had been looking for answers. To this day no one knows the cause of the hum.9 Black Dahlia Es1A In 1947 the body of 22 year old Elizabeth Short was found in two pieces in a parking lot in Los Angeles. BLACK HISTORY FROM A - Z Maulana Karenga scholar, created Kwanzaa (born 7/14/1941) Parsonsburg, Maryland In 1966, Karenga created Kwanzaa, a holiday designed to celebrate and honor the values of ancient African cultures and inspire African Americans to greater pride in their heritage. After meeting Malcolm X as a college student in the 1960s, Karenga became politicized and helped found the US organization, which among other things promoted a Cultural Revolution for African Americans. Kwanzaa is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years. The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits of the harvest.” Karenga chose a phrase from Swahili because the language is used by various peoples throughout Africa. Karenga is a professor in the Department of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach and is the director of the Kawaida Institute for Pan African Studies in Los Angeles.
This Changes Everything. Titus 2.11-14 One of the strongest cases for Christianity is the radical life-changing power it wields. Have you ever known anyone who was ‘hard after it’ in terms of worldly passions and pursuits, who was radically changed by the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? I have. For those of you who have been with me—receiving Morning Briefings—for a while, you will remember the Duke of Earl, from my days serving on the mean streets of Long Beach, working with the homeless, mentally ill and quite a few gang members and criminals, including those from the wickedest Los Angeles gang of all, the 18th Street Gang. Well, the Duke, (his street name, of course), became my bodyguard, so that I was able to go anywhere in that city, with him nearby. When first I encountered him, he sent a chill down my spine—but I watched the Lord woo him and draw him back to himself, over weeks, months and now it has been years. He went from sleeping in one corner of a parking garage near Linco ...

(español abajo) Enjoying weekend meeting with brethren in Long Beach, California and especially staying with Del and Ruth Scott. The flight over the country was spectacular with views of Lake Erie, Buffalo and the Niagara River. The lake is about two thirds frozen. The Welland Canal stood out and I thought of all my good friends that live close to that waterway. Then the clouds hid the landscape until we broke out over Des Moines, Iowa. Then we passed over Omaha, Nebraska and I dozed till I woke up to the spectacular view of the Rockies just north of Denver. Then it was the red canyons of Southern Utah, the desert and then over Bear Mountain (no snow!) into the Los Angeles basin. Why would anyone choose not to sit by the window and thus miss all the glorious scenery that God has made for our country? Estoy feliz al pasar el fin de semana con los hermanos en Long Beach, California y especialmente al quedarme en la casa de Del y de Ruth Scott. (Marcos Reeves es uno de los evangelistas aquí). On this Day in Weather History.Snow in So. California *In 1949, snow fell in San Diego for the first time since 1882. Snow also fell across parts of Los Angeles. Burbank received 4.7 inches, while Long Beach and Laguna Beach each received 1 inch of snow. *In 1975, a truly legitimate contender for "The Storm of the Century" invaded the Upper Midwest as a severe blizzard moved north across the Dakotas and Minnesota. Lasting for 2 days, the blizzard buried many areas with around 2 feet of vicious wind-driven snow. Sustained speeds of 30 to 50 mph, with gusts of 70-90 mph, produced drifts as high as 20 feet! Some roads were closed for 11 days! In Sioux Falls, visibilities were less than one quarter mile for 24 hours. Just east of Sioux Falls, a 2,000 foot broadcast tower was blown down. In Willmar, Minnesota, 168 people were stranded on a passenger train. Wind chills plunged to around 80 below zero. At Duluth, the barometric pressure plunged to 28.55 inches. The blizzard, which occurred on the 102nd anniversa ...

In the 60’s, Maxine Waters met Dee Andrews when he just came back form the Dallas Cowboys. Maxine’s cousin invited her to a party and that party was where they meet for the first time. Sparks flew and Dee would drive up to Los Angeles everyday to pick her up from work to make sure that she got home safe. He would also visit her every weekend because Maxine’s mom cooked Creole food. Everyone loved Dee, especially her mom. After that they would hear about each other every 10 years or so but they were both in relationships. Every time she would see him or hear his name, she would say, “I LOVE ME SOME DEE”. Maxine’s good friend and Grammy winner, Thelma Houston, knew Dee too. About 3 years ago, Thelma mentioned Long Beach and it reminded Maxine of Dee so she asks about him. Maxine told Thelma if she runs into Dee, tell him I said, Hi, but if he is not is a relationship, give him my phone number. Dee called Maxine the next day. He invited her to a Long Beach Ribbon cutting and as soon as she steppe ...

To my Los Angeles -centric & -philic friends. Suggestions on what route to drive from Long Beach Airport to Las Vegas on a Saturday afternoon?
I was looking at the Top Ten Vampire Destinations, and found this for all my friends in California: 8. Los Angeles The City of Angels is also the city of the undead -- if you know where to look. A must-stop is the Vampire Lounge and Tasting Room, which rumor has is owned by a coven of vamps. Fans of True Blood should visit Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, the filming location for vampire bar Fangtasia. And if your blood runs hot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House, which served as Angel’s mansion, and Torrance High School, also known as Sunnydale High.

Even locals can enjoy my tours, book your Adventure today! My latest review on Trip Advisor~ My husband and I are local to Southern California (Long Beach - so in relative terms, close enough). We always take out of towners to "see" the Hollywood sign via drive-by, but the Hollywood Sign Adventure tour was so much more about the history and some of the hidden gems of Los Angeles. In the middle of the tour, I almost forgot about the sign as what Hargo (our guide) was telling us about the architecture, history, and botany of our hike was so fascinating. Hargo's knowledge and stories really made this memorable (and I really loved all of the steps that we did!). One of my co-workers had just told me about the steps that were built in Los Angeles and we definitely climbed quite a few stairs! I loved the stair climbing, but wouldn't take my elderly parents or family members on this tour. He does have other tours that aren't quite as strenuous. But for my friends and younger family, would take them on this tour ...

"In Sherman Oaks, Bel-Air and Westwood, for example, residents are more likely to live up to 84 years old -- that's 12 years longer than those residing in South Los Angeles, the northeast San Fernando Valley or the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. In North Hollywood, San Pedro and Silver Lake, there are areas with no safe walkways, only one to three acres of parkland or open space per 1,000 people and high rates of motor vehicle crashes with pedestrians and cyclists. They also have higher rates of respiratory disease and fewer fresh-food grocery stores per 10,000 residents. "With the health atlas included into the general plan, city departments will consider policies and programs through a health lens," said Ken Bernstein, principal city planner for the City of Los Angeles. "That is a groundbreaking step for a city as large as Los Angeles." He added that the general plan is the city's overall road map for how Los Angeles will grow in the future. It has not been updated in almost 20 years."
WISHING EVERY ONE A VERY HAPPY 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION. The Sangley "Experience" - [WELCOME ABOARD] Growing up as children of the military, most of us probably never lived in any one place for maybe two or three years at a time, sometimes even less. There was hardly enough time to make friends when you would have to up and leave when Dad got new orders. It was somewhat of a disruptive life, but it was full of adventure. After all, this was the Navy! Destroyers, aircraft carriers, shipyards! Pretty exciting stuff for a kid. And yet, the nearly nomadic life deprived us of some things that were, for other American kids, a normal part of growing up. To this day I find it difficult to answer questions like; Where are you from? What High School did you go to? What's your hometown? Long Beach, San Diego, Albuquerque, Bremerton, Newport News, Jacksonville Beach, Los Angeles? How can you say you're from? There is no simple answer! You end up saying, "My dad was in the Navy." And the response is usually a sympathet ...

BAD NEWS FOR LANDLORDS- THE GREAT EVICTION SLOW DOWN Have you noticed that over the last couple of years that the eviction process has taken much longer? Years ago the process for an uncontested eviction took about 30 days. Now that process takes about 45 days. Unfortunately, the process is about to take much longer and initial estimates project a 60 day uncontested eviction. I recently attended the Eviction Hub meeting in downtown LA given by the presiding judge. Los Angeles County The County of Los Angeles announced sweeping cuts to counteract a 60 to 80 million dollar budget shortfall. We learned that very soon in fact possibly beginning in late March, the county of Los Angeles will be downsizing their eviction courts from 25 courts to a FIVE COURT TRIAL HUB SYSTEM. Basically it is the end of the neighborhood courthouses. All eastern cases from Pomona to El Montes will be filed and heard in Pasadena. All San Fernando Valley cases will be in Santa Monica. All South Bay cases will be in Long Beach. All A ...

The United States Postal Service (USPS) plans to close its Long Beach mail-processing center at 2300 Redondo Ave. on Monday, July 1 as a way to alleviate financial problems, but the closure will not impact mail service, said a USPS spokesperson in an emailed statement last week. Starting on the day of the closure, mail bound for ZIP codes with 905-, 907- (Signal Hill) and 908- (Long Beach) would be re-routed to a plant in Los Angeles, where it will be processed and then transported to post offices where a letter carrier is stationed, said Richard Maher, spokesperson for USPS in Los Angeles and Orange counties. He said mail delivered to ZIP codes with 906- would go to a plant in the city of Industry. Leading up to the closure, transportation schedules will be revised, and additional equipment will be moved over to receiving plants if needed, Maher said. He said the USPS has also followed procedures in national collective-bargaining agreements to allow for the reassignment of about 400 employees. “This re ...

LA’s Frontiers to emerge stronger after bankruptcy protection by Chuck Colbert In a move to restructure its debt and emerge with a stronger balance sheet, Frontiers Media, LLC, has filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors. Based in Los Angeles, the media company publishes Frontiers Magazine, the oldest and largest circulation LGBT publication serving Southern California. It is distributed free of charge primarily in San Diego, Long Beach, West Hollywood, and Palm Springs. News of the filing came in a March 20 press statement, which said Frontiers Media filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. Frontiers has liabilities of $3.2 million and assets of $342,000, only $58,000 of which is in cash, according to the filing. VICTORY! The second victory on the road to transparent elections happened on Thursday, as the Senate Appropriations Committee passed SB 52, the California DISCLOSE Act, on a vote of 5-2. SB 52, authored by Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill, and sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, will end big secret spending in California campaigns by requiring political ads to clearly show their top three funders — right on the ads themselves. Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Kevin De Leon (D-Los Angeles) and Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) are to be thanked for their leadership in voting Yes and making sure SB 52 passed out of the committee. Senators Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach), Alex Padilla (D-Van Nuys), and joint author Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) also voted Yes.

Zack de la Rocha was born Jan. 12, 1970, in Long Beach, Calif., to parents Roberto and Olivia. Because his parents parted ways when he was very small, de la Rocha initially split his time between his Mexican-American father, a muralist in the group “Los Four,” and his German-Irish mother, a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Irvine. After his father began to exhibit signs of mental illness, destroying artwork and praying and fasting nonstop, Zack de la Rocha lived exclusively with his mother in Irvine. In the 1970s the Orange County suburb was nearly all white. Irvine was the polar opposite of Lincoln Heights, the predominantly Mexican-American community of Los Angeles that de la Rocha’s father called home. Because of his Hispanic heritage, de la Rocha felt racially alienated in Orange County. He told Rolling Stone magazine in 1999 how humiliated he felt when his teacher used the racially offensive term *** and his classmates erupted in laughter. “I remember sitting ther ...
The courts are coming around to understanding that DAs should be held liable for the policies they put in place or enable where people's rights are violated. "The panel reversed the district court’s grant of a motion for judgment on the pleadings, entered following a decision by the United States Supreme Court, and held that the County of Los Angeles could be liable pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 because the district attorney acted as final policymaker for the County when adopting and implementing internal polices and procedures related to the use of jailhouse informants." Goldstein v. Long Beach and County of LA, 9th Circuit, No. 10-56787, 5/8/2103. Now if they would just hit the issue head-on and realize that neither DAs nor judges should be immune from civil liability for their corruption [the Framers would not have tolerated such protection of government actors], this would be a safer Republic.

Great shot of downtown LA, I would say from Signal Hill in Long Beach. Most people from overseas are surprised by the lack of high rise, but remember the San Andreas Fault! If the camera had panned to the right you would have been able to see the snowcapped foothills of the Sierra Nevada and Mt Baldy. "Mount San Antonio, commonly known as Mount Baldy, at 10,068 ft (3,069 m), is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Mount San Antonio's sometimes snow-capped peaks are visible on clear days and dominate the view of the Los Angeles skyline."

I didn't belong in any way. I didn't even feel like the teachers wanted me there. I just felt like I wasn't seen or understood." ►Mark Wahlberg Mark Wahlberg attended Copley Square High Sch ...
This storyline weaves itself into every justification for anti-worker policies. From Washington's potential Grand Bargain that would cut trillions from needed social programs, to the workplaces with their stagnating wages and declining benefits, those on top plead poverty to workers while stuffing their pockets beyond belief. The argument is also currently being repeated by the giant multinational corporations that control the nation's shipping ports. Fortunately, the longshore workers are organized into powerful unions that have the ability to fight back against big business greed - something that was recently demonstrated at the port strikes in Los Angles and Long Beach, and which is now underway in the union negotiations happening at ports along the East Coast and at the ports in the Northwest. Victory in Southern California An impressive victory was achieved in Los Angeles last month as a result of an eight-day strike by the 800 members of the Office Clerical Unit of the International Longshore and Wa ...

SLOW DOWN!!! Another WHALE has been KILLED by a CONTAINER SHIP! "An endangered male fin whale was struck and killed by a container ship on its way into the Port of Los Angeles, officials said Wednesday. The whale was splayed belly-up on the bow of Ever Dainty, an Evergreen container ship from Coco Solo, Panama. It appeared to have been freshly killed when it was discovered stuck on the ship's bow Tuesday evening. NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service spokesman Jim Milbury said his office will investigate where along the ship's route the whale may have been struck. "It looked like there was an indentation down toward the tail," Milbury said. "It looked like it was a recent death. There wasn't much of a smell. It's fairly apparent it was hit by the ship." The carcass will be towed back out to sea this week, he said. Fin whales are the second largest whale species on Earth, and they have been sighted on a near-daily basis in waters off of the South Bay and Long Beach this winter. Like their larger cousins ...

It is an incredibly beautiful morning in Long Beach. I know everyone on the road this morning couldn't help but notice the mountains all the way around us including the Catalina mountains out in the ocean. The snow levels were so low last night and the Los Angeles mountains look bigger than life. Of course I grabbed Andrew, bundled up, and headed to Signal Hill to get a better view.

Let's see... where do I want to visit this year? I go where the invitation is strong, clear, and open. So far, this is what it looks like: Austin, Ashland, Asheville, Albuquerque, Sandia Park, Boulder, Denver, Phoenix, Peoria, San Diego, Long Beach, Banning, San Bernardino, Seattle, Vancouver, Boston, Fort Worth, Plano, Tucson, Dickinson, Hemet, League City, Taos, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Whistler, Llano, Houston, Lady Lake, Rio Rancho, Morelia, Eugene, Bend, Midland, San Antonio, San Angelo, Coffs Harbour. That's a preliminary list. Where else might I want to go to share the gift of music and conversations about what is most important?

Excerpt from DailyBulletin: Title team honored Cal Poly Pomona honored its 1982 women's NCAA championship team during halftime of Saturday's game against Chico State at Kellogg Gymnasium. It was the first of the school's five national titles in the sport. Coach Darlene May has since died but assistant Barbara Fulton was on hand, along with former players Lisa Ulmer of San Bernardino, Maureen Flynn-Becerra of Yorba Linda, Barbara Francis of Los Angeles, Kelley Fraser of Riverside, Diane Looker of Rowland Heights, Robin Fox of Mission Viejo and Jeanette Montgomery of Corona. Ulmer, who graduated from Pacific High School but now lives in Long Beach, is a three-time All-CCAA honoree who's still in the school record books in several categories. She often has been back to Kellogg in a different capacity; she has worked as a referee during the past 25 years. She doesn't think twice about being back where she once played. "It was a little more awkward when it was my coach that was still coaching here," she said. ...
Snoop Doog Biography Early life Named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Sr. (December 10, 1948 – November 9, 1985, Los Angeles), Calvin Broadus was born October 20, 1971 at the Los Altos Hospital in Long Beach, California, the second of three sons of Beverly Broadus (née Tate; born April 27, 1951, McComb, Mississippi).[2][3][4] His father, Vernall Varnado (born December 13, 1949, Magnolia, Mississippi),[2] was a Vietnam veteran, singer, and mail carrier who was said to be frequently absent from his life.[5] Broadus' parents nicknamed him "Snoopy" as a child because of his appearance, but usually addressed him as Calvin at home.[6][7] His mother and stepfather divorced in 1975. At an early age, Broadus began singing in Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and playing piano; when he was in sixth grade, he began rapping.[8][9] He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, and was convicted for cocaine possession, serving six months at the Wayside County Jail.[6] As a teenager, Snoop Dogg frequen ...

The South Side Fire Company would like to express their appreciation for all those who helped out with, and came to, the services for OFD Captain Matthew Porcari. It was humbling and astonishing to meet firefighters from all over New York, Pennsylvania, and the far reaches of the country including Connecticut, South Carolina, Washington D.C., Alabama, Texas, Los Angeles, and Canada. New York was represented from all the corners including Fort Drum, North Pole, Carthage, Long Beach, Fredonia, Rochester, and so many, many more. Every department in Tioga County was there and nearly everyone in Broome. It was especially moving to meet the West Webster Fire Department Chief and so many of his members. There are great performers, and then there are game-changers. Jenni Rivera, who died at age 43 in a plane crash outside of Monterrey, Mexico early Sunday morning, was that rare breed of artist who will be remembered not only for her success, but for all the rules she re-wrote. As the undisputed queen of banda music, her professional achievements within a male-dominated genre run deep – among her many feats, La Diva de la Banda sold some 1.2 million albums in the United States alone and sold out arenas like the Staples Center in Los Angeles, something no other female regional Mexican artist had done before. But make no mistake: nothing was ever handed to this woman. See Also: Jenni Rivera: 10 Career Highlights Rivera was born in Long Beach, California on July 2, 1969, one of six siblings. The daughter of bartender-turned-music mogul Pedro Rivera, who launched his own record label, Cintas Acuario, in 1987 to produce the music of narcocorrido legend Chalino Sanchez, among others, and launch the career of h ...

Business Insider on the Los Angeles and Long Beach port shutdowns:
This is the full story of this years Thanksgiving...please feel free to share. Thanks!!! Sometimes it only takes a commitment from you; the rest will fall in place. I’ve tried to make it a tradition to volunteer for a couple hours every Thanksgiving, something I decided to do while serving overseas in the Army. I’ve delivered meals in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and last year in Kansas City. In Kansas City I was with an old Army commander of mine, we have remained close since we served together in Germany and Iraq. We registered with the Salvation Army and delivered meals through the city, afterwards we rejoined our wives and my daughter for a Thanksgiving feast at Golden Corral. Something about giving back on Thanksgiving of all days means the world to me. Now that I’m in the “Volunteer State” I thought it would be easy to give my time this year, but I found it to be the opposite. I called the Salvation Army hoping to deliver meals again this year, but found out through a recording that the ...

L.A. County Adds Jobs By Howard Fine Friday, November 16, 2012 Los Angeles County’s jobs recovery continued to pick up steam as the unemployment rate dipped to 10.5 percent in October and employers added 41,000 jobs to their payrolls, according to state figures released Friday. The unemployment rate fell to its lowest point in more than three years, down slightly from 10.6 percent in September and well below the 12.2 percent mark a year ago, according to the state Employment Development Department. The October drop was largely due to more teachers and other employees reporting back to schools. Despite the recent improvement, the county’s jobless rate is still above the statewide average of 10.1 percent and much higher than the national rate of 7.9 percent. Locally, the county’s two largest cities, Los Angeles and Long Beach, both posted unemployment rates of 11.4 percent in October, up slightly from 11.2 percent in September. Nonfarm payroll employment countywide rose by 41,200 jobs, topping 3.88 mi ...
Clean Tech Zone will help bring jobs to Long Beach! Want to thank my colleagues for approving my agenda item asking the City Manager to look in to how the City of Long Beach can establish a Clean Tech Zone that will attract industries -- large and small -- that are producing products and services related to clean energy -- such as solar and wind. The Cities of Sacramento and Los Angeles have moved ahead of Long Beach on this front. Long Beach has all the right ingredients to become a center of clean technology.

I lived in Long Beach, CA when the LA / Rodney King riots began on April 29, 1992. I worked in Inglewood on North Oak Street one block off West Florence Blvd. and only nine major intersections from the south-central Los Angeles epicenter of the violence -- West Florence Blvd. and South Normandie Avenue. At that intersection traffic was blocked by rioters who systematical drug white motorists fro m their cars and beat them. You may recall the name Reginald Denny, the white Truck Driver who was dragged out of his 18 wheeler and nearly beaten to death by three African-American men. That was early afternoon. Within an hour we knew we should go home. Closing the office, we headed out sticking to side streets and neighborhoods the news copters reported as quiet. Early on the Palmer Center - the LAPD police headquarters had come under siege and Chief Gates determined the streets too dangerous for his officers. Gates pulled his overwhelmed force from south-central, ceding the streets to anarchy until the military ...

A brief moment in history from today and dating back to 1946: Today is another historical day for the 122 foot Space Shuttle Endeavor which is now on it's 12 mile, two day, 2mph trip to it's final home at the California Science Center. It has so far taken up two of four lanes on streets and at some points up ahead, it will be inches away from building and will protrude onto driveways and sidewalks. This is a small size of a challenge compared to when in 1946, Howard Hughe's 218 foot H-4 Hercules or popularly known as the "Spruce Goose" plane was broken down into three pieces and traveled down Los Angeles streets from Culver City to the Port of Long Beach during it's 24 mile, 3 day trip. At 400,000 pounds, compare that to compared to that of the 168,000 pounds the Space Shuttle is. At because of the Hercules shear size, utility company's had to cut or raise some 2,300 power or phone lines along the route. It only flew once and is now on display in McMinnville, Oregon (40 miles Southwest of Portland, OR)

What's the future bring for us ...! Que Es lo que nostrae el futuro ..! Imports Bypass California, via Panama and Mexico RATE THIS Mark Montague 16 Sep 2012 12:58 PM 0 Although the Panama Canal Expansion project is not yet complete, shippers are already shifting supply chains to bypass West Coast ports and deliver imported goods directly to the Gulf Coast and East Coasts. Meanwhile, other importers -- and some manufacturers -- are taking advantage of new highways through Mexico that lead directly to the Gulf or over land to Texas. U.S. Ports and Shippers Preparing Now for Panama Canal Expansion, Due in 2015 While the overall effect of the Canal expansion on the U.S. economy can only be guessed, these supply chain adjustments are already affecting trucking lanes. Some ports and hubs in the Southeast are gaining importance, and shippers are gradually finding avenues to reduce their dependence on the overcrowded West Coast ports. Los Angeles and Long Beach, which currently handle about 80% of Asian imports, ...
Just back from a combined business trip/vacation to California. It was a great trip that let me scratch several items off my "bucket list." I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time, drove through Big Sur, visited San Francisco, saw a grove of redwood trees, was amazed at Yosemite National Park, spent a day looking at both the highest peak in the continguous 48 states (Mt. Whitney) and the lowest point (Badwater in Death Valley), and swung around the Sierras to see the largest trees in the world at Sequoia National Park. For variety, I also visited the museum at the Buck Owens Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. Got a kick out of his Nudie suit with more than 10,000 hand-sewn rhinestones. Coming into the city from the north, I noticed a sign for Merle Haggard Avenue. It was a trip with dozens of jaw dropping moments. Such a contrast with the Atlantic coast. In California, the mountains rise immediately out of the ocean. The trip started with a bike-ped conference in Long Beach, just south of Los Angeles. I wo ...

Fake Louboutins: Officers assigned to the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have seized more than 20,000 counterfeit Christian Louboutin women's shoes over the last month, confiscating footwear with a potential retail value of $18 million, federal officials said.
Long Beach commuters who depend on the 710 in Los Angeles or the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge at the I-405 might see a rough couple of years ahead, as two major construction projects begin simultaneously on August 19 this weekend. For at least 18 months, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close two on-ramps—one in Commerce at Atlantic Ave. and one in East Los Angeles at Cesar Chavez Blvd.—to the southbound 710 freeway while Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA) will reduce traffic to one lane on the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge where it meets the 405 for 11 months. The 710 connection closures are due to a much needed freeway bridge replacement project as well widening the freeway itself from the L.A. River Bridge at Atlantic to the 10 freeway. The $120 million project will involve the installation of precast concrete panels and slabs while upgrading the median barrier; pullout enhancement will also progress to increase safety for maintenance crews. The closures begin at 7PM thi ...

I missed this my first in 15 years. The tradition began on July 4, 1904, when Huntington Beach commemorated the arrival of the first electric passenger train linking the area with Long Beach and Los Angeles. The Board of Trade, a forerunner of the Chamber of Commerce, sponsored this first event, bringing 50,000 people to town to join in the day’s celebration. Through the years, residents and visitors have witnessed some spectacular sights. How’s this for a show-stopping stunt by a city official? In the late 1930s, the city’s first lifeguard and fire chief, Dilbert “Bud” Higgins had a trick that no one has since imitated. He would don a firesuit, cover his face with petroleum jelly, soak himself with alcohol, light a match and dive in a fiery ball from a 50-foot platform high above the pier into the water below. Among the famous who have presided over the parade in years past are Hollywood movie stars Jayne Mansfield, Natalie Wood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Dorothy Lamour, Mickey Rooney (and Mickey Mouse!) ...

Wow all around California but we'll never forget those memories in High School and how it helped shape the CLASS OF 2012 at EL CAJON VALLEY High School!!!
Reader Mail: "Since when does breaking the law make it ok? I was not born in Mexico but my father was, and my mother was born in California. He came over in the late 30's the wrong way and was deported right away when caught in Downtown Los Angeles. After being dropped off at TJ he spent the next 2 years getting his Green Card in order to come over the right way. When it came to immigration he always thought everyone should enter our country the right way, period! In my working years with Southern California Edison, I would go to job sites where day workers would be digging holes, and these guys looked like they just got off the boat at Long Beach, if you get what I mean, and they were not Hispanics, but no one ever talks about how they get here! Now how do our leaders let that happen? All they talk about is the poor Mexican! But don't get me wrong, they all have to enter the right way."
Motion Riders, there has been a change for next Sunday's ride. I would like everyone to consider doing the following ride and/or volunteering for registration. Motion Riders The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition is hosting its Annual River Ride June 10, 2012. As a member of the Board of Directors, I extend an exclusive invitation to members of Major Motion, one of the most respected and oldest continuously operation cycling clubs in Los Angeles, to participate in Los Angeles most respected family cycling event, the LA River Ride. Currently we could use 30 to 35 good cyclists as ride marshals for all rides on the course, 40 to 100 miles. The ride originates in two places Griffith Park and Shoreline Park in Long Beach and travels along the Los Angeles River bike path. The two groups will pass each other along the route. All groups can enjoy the volunteer supported rest stops where there will be snacks, drinks, facilities, mechanics and fun. Rest stops are marked as turnaround points for the various ride ...

Remember the riots? I’ll never forget DEK: 20 year after the calamity, editor still hasn’t forgiven or forgotten By Brady Rhoades Orange County News About 20 years ago, on the afternoon of April 29, I was working as an editor for the News-Enterprise in an office on Main Street, Seal Beach, when I heard the news: four officers caught on video beating the snot out of Rodney King had been acquitted of criminal charges by a Simi Valley jury. In a matter of hours, Los Angeles – and parts of Long Beach, Pomona and other areas, was burning, Reginald Denny, an innocent passerby, was pulled from his truck and had his brains bashed in by a swarm of thugs and looters took the opportunity to steal new TVs and appliances.
