The BJP The BJP, established in 1980, is one of the two major parties in the Indian political system in terms of representation. The BJP is the political child of earlier Political Parties like the Jan Sangh and the Janata Party. BJP initially moderated the Hindu nationalist stance of its predecessor, in order to gain a wider appeal. The failure of the moderate strategy championed by Vajpayee led to a shift in the ideology of the party toward a policy of more hardline Hindutva and Hindu fundamentalism. In 1984 Advani was appointed president, and under him the BJP became the political voice of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. On the strength of the movement the BJP won 86 Lok Sabha seats in 1989, a tally which made its support crucial to the National Front government of V. P. Singh. In September 1990, Advani began a "rath yatra" in support of the Ram mandir movement. A large body of kar sevaks nonetheless reached Ayodhya, and attempted to attack the mosque. This resulted in a pitched battle with the paramilit ...
In 1996, the BJP became the single-largest political party in the parliament, with the Congress at its lowest tally ever. The President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, appointed Vajpayee as Prime Minister i.e., the first BJP Government (May 16 - 31st, 1996). Shri Vajpayee was obliged to resign after serving the shortest time as Prime Minister in India - 13 days. Lok Sabha Elections were again held in 1998, and the NDA National Democratic Alliance obtained a simple majority. Shri Vajpayee returned as Prime Minister for second time (March 19, 1998 - October 13, 1999). As the AIADMK withdrew its support, fresh elections were again called. The NDA government provided significant support to the Prasar Bharati Act which gave government owned media channels more autonomy. The Vajpayee government carried out an electoral promise with the 5 nuclear tests at Pokhran, in Rajasthan in 1998, which gave India a weaponised nuclear capacity. On October 13, 1999, the BJP-led NDA won 303 seats. The BJP won an all-time ...

TRS Party - Congress in war of words After falling out on joining forces for the elections, Congress and TRS are now engaged in a war of words in the run-up to the polls. Claiming that it was Congress president Sonia Gandhi who made the dream of separate Telangana become a reality, former deputy chief minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha on Sunday alleged that TRS went back on its promise of merging with Congress. Recalling that TRS had also promised to make a Dalit leader the Chief Minister of Telangana, he charged that the sub-regional party's leadership is synonymous with "betrayal". Meanwhile, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao, who has been saying that "reconstruction" of Telangana can be ensured by TRS alone, alleged that it was Congress and TDP, which were responsible for several development problems in the region. Dashing the last hopes of the Congress, the TRS president had on Saturday categorically ruled out even an electoral alliance with the party for the forthcoming polls to Lok Sabha and state As ...

THE IRREVERENT LAWYER 6 big ideas for new PMJai Anant Dehadrai 14 March 2014, 04:07 PM IST 2 inShare 8 Is this India’s last chance to recover from the wasted decade? Come May 2014, once the electoral dust settles into the foreground and the new claimants to power emerge - one thing will become painfully certain. India is struggling to breathe and it needs a capable leader who can revive it. The freshly elected Prime Minister of the 16th Lok Sabha will face the unenviable task of dismantling the failed administrative systems and destructive economic policies that have choked India’s progress over the last decade. In the past, it was considered customary for freshly inducted Cabinet Ministers and their subordinate Minister’s of State to take their own sweet time to ease into their individual portfolios. Sarkari privileges were meant to be enjoyed to the point of being abused. As long as the Ministry in question chugged along at a rate reasonably similar to what had been achieved in the past, no one ex ...
2014 poll outcome will be decided by youth & women voters By Dr Satish Misra With the Election Commission's (EC) announcement of nine-phased electoral schedule for electing the 16th Lok Sabha, country's voters have become a king as every political party would leave no stone unturned to woo them so that they can come to power in New Delhi. Almost all opinion polls and election surveys are showing that the Bharatiya Janata Party led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in ahead of not only the Congress led ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) but also to other alliances. Question being most asked and discussed is whether there is going to be a change of government or not which sole depends upon the way electorate responds to appeal and promises of different Political Parties. While till 2009 general election rural voters decided the fate of the Political Parties, a new trend became visible. Urban voter stood up to be counted and it is expected that 2014 election's outcome would be influenced by the youth ...

(Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi…) New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi did not spend a single penny from their pockets in the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections as the party took care of their entire expenditure. Both were given Rs 25 lakh each to contest from the Rae Bareli and Amethi seats, the maximum permissible for spending in Parliamentary elections at the time under election laws. Pranab Mukherjee, who has now become the President, was the only other candidate favoured by the party in the last elections when it gave him the second-highest funding of Rs 15 lakh. Expenditure data reveals that all Congress candidates in the last Lok Sabha polls on an average got Rs 10 lakh each as the party's support to fight elections. While Mukherjee, who successfully contested ...

But when we analyse his journey from the time of his leaving a Govt. job to a social activist to forming Aam Aadmi Party to the chair of the Chief Minister of Delhi (and also leaving it) to his foray into the next Lok Sabha election – we find that for all his purist rhetoric, idealist posture and talks of brining systemic change to Indian politics and governance, ironically in many ways, he exactly mirrors the qualities he criticises in his opponents. Arvind Kejriwal is a clever strategist and an ambitious & opportunist politician, who is ready to do anything to stay in the news for free publicity and increase his appeal nationwide. That is how he had built one of the most highly visibility movement in recent Indian history and used it for fulfilling his own political ambition. For all his talks of extreme transparencies, virtuous processes and absolute truths ...

Congress leaders shy away from Lok Sabha contest
Is Paid News a threat to our democracy ? When 'news' is published in favour of a particular politician or a political party through sale of editorial space, the 'paid news' phenomenon becomes even more pernicious. Innumerable complementary 'news' reports and feature articles on representatives of Political Parties, including candidates who have been contesting elections, appear in newspapers and are broadcast on television channels across the country in the run-up to the 2014 and 2009 Lok Sabha Elections and the state legislative assembly elections. No disclosure is made that money is exchanged between the concerned candidate or political party to which she or he belongs and the owners or representatives of media organisations before such 'news' is printed or broadcast. This is obviously ill-gotten black money or slush money earned through corruption in awarding government contracts, smuggling, crime, arms trade, arms deals, kickbacks on arms deals that compromise national security interests and sub-stand ...
While the Central committee is yet to clear their candidature, BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh Leaders want to field Kairana MLA Hukum Singh from the Kairana Lok Sabha seat, Bijnore MLA Bhartendu Singh from Bijnore, Sardhana MLA Sangeet Som from Muzaffarnagar seat, and Thana Bhawan MLA Suresh Rana from Saharanpur. In November last year, undeterred by criticism from rival Political Parties, the BJP felicitated Sangeet Som and MLA Suresh Rana, who have been accused of inciting communal violence in Muzaffarnagar. They were felicitated by BJP President Rajnath Singh. The BJP had then also defended their MLAs with party leader Kalraj Mishra saying, "Our leaders were charged under the National Security Act to defame them in the Muzaffarnagar riots case. But the court had held these charges to be baseless. They are our leaders and we will certainly honour them in our rallies." Sources have told the Indian Express that while many within the party were opposed to giving Bhartendu Singh a Lok Sabha ticket, yoga guru . ...
India’s election campaign goes into high gear By Keith Jones 12 March 2014 Following last week’s announcement of the schedule for elections to the Lok Sabha (the lower, popularly-elected house of India’s bi-cameral parliament), India’s national election campaign has gone into high gear. The election is to be held in nine phases. Voting will begin on April 7 and culminate five weeks later on May 12. However, the bulk of the voting (425 of the 545 Lok Sabha seats) will take place over a three-week period, beginning in less than a month: April 9 to 30. The ballots will be counted on May 16, with the expectation that India’s new government will be in place by the end of May. The elections are taking place under conditions of deepening crisis for the Indian bourgeoisie and mounting opposition among workers and toilers to its drive to transform India into a cheap labor manufacturer, back office, and resource producer for world capitalism. India’s economy is mired in stagflation. For the past two-and ...
A LAUGHABLE COMPARISON Kejriwal and Mahatma Gandhi similar? So silly ( Agencies): Given that author and Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Rajmohan Gandhi has joined the Aam Aadmi Party and is the party's candidate for the Lok Sabha election from East Delhi constituency, it is natural for him to plunge into eulogies for his leader Arvind Kejriwal. But he has gone overboard in drawing comparisons between Mahatma Gandhi and Mr Kejriwal. It has done no good to his reputation — and the analogy is certainly a demeaning gesture to the Father of the Nation. The “energy” and “hope” that Mr Gandhi sees as the common factor between the movements that Mr Kejriwal and the Mahatma led had been channelled for entirely different purposes. Mahatma Gandhi aroused the consciousness of the masses against being enslaved to the British, while Mr Kejriwal ran a campaign on the fake promise of good governance and combating corruption. As Chief Minister of Delhi, he had every opportunity to make good his assurances to the peopl ...

PAPPU was a toddler perhaps when the Indian Hitler was there. His pet grandmother was that HITLER. He should know the history of emergency before passing comments on anyone being a Hitler. For his benefit, here goes the write up Indian Hitler: HITLER OF INDIA On 12 June 1975, Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court found the Prime Minister guilty on the charge of misuse of government machinery for her election campaign. The court declared her election null and void and unseated her from her seat in the Lok Sabha. The court also banned her from contesting any election for an additional six years. Serious charges such as bribing voters and election malpractices were dropped and she was held responsible for misusing government machinery, and found guilty on charges such as using the state police to build a dais, availing the services of a government officer, Yashpal Kapoor, during the elections before he had resigned from his position, and use of electricity from the state electricity departmen ...
Kozhikode: Ruling out any alliance with any party in Kerala, Social Democratic Party of India Monday released its list of candidates for all the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. Speaking to reporters here, National Secretary of SDPI Dr Mehaboob Awad Sareef said the party would contest in all the twenty parliamentary constituencies in Kerala. "The party will have no truck with either the ruling United Democratic front or the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the state," Sareef told reporters. "It will have no alliance with any party in Kerala," he said, adding the SDPI National Parliamentary board had accepted the candidates' list. SDPI will contest all the 20 Lok Sabha seats, he said. Besides Kerala, the party will field candidates in nine states including Karnataka (5), Tamil Nadu (5), Andhra Pradesh(1), Madhya Pradesh (1), Delhi (1), Uttar Pradesh (2), Bihar (2) and West Bengal (5), he said. is likely to get between 212 and 232 seats if the Lok Sabha Elections were held today, with alone winning between 193 and 213, according to an opinion poll done for a TV channel. In January, 36% of respondents to the survey had chosen as their preferred PM, in contrast to 13%. Apart from the and UPA, the Trinamool Congress is likely to be the biggest party winning between 20 and 28 seats, according to the survey. The Left with 15-23, AIADMK with 14-20, YSR Congress and SP with 11-17 seats each, TDP and DMK with 10-16 each and with 8-14 could be the other significant players in the 16th it projected. If these projections turn out right, it would almost certainly mean that the next government in New Delhi would be headed by Modi and would be cobbled together by the existing NDA joining hands with smaller regional parties. Neither nor the ill-defined Third Front/Federal Front would really be in a position to take a meaningful shot at forming a in such a scenario.

Aug 2012 Asaduddin speech in Lok Sabha over ethnic violence in Assam Sir, the July 20th incident cannot be looked in isolation. What happened on 6th July and 19th July should also be looked into seriously because the immediate conclusion of the July 20th incident is not right. I charge the state government for completely failing in protecting the lives and properties of the non-Bodos living in the BTC areas. As a result of that, about five lakh non-Bodos - a majority of them were Muslims - are living in 200 and odd relief camps where there is no clean drinking water; children are sick and there is no proper ration being given to them. I say this because I have visited those places. I am giving an example of Kamadunga High School relief camp in Kokrajhar where there are 7700 people living. This school houses 400 students. Out of these people, 2980 are children. You may please mark my words that in the coming days, you will have waves of children dying in relief camps. So, my request to the government is th ...

Black money: Swiss exchanging 'lawful' info with India Last Updated: Sunday, March 09, 2014, 14:27 New Delhi: With India stepping up its pursuit of alleged black money in Swiss banks, Switzerland says it is exchanging information with Indian authorities on all lawful requests, but cannot help on enquiries based on stolen banking data. The European country, which has often been accused of being the most favoured place for stashing illicit wealth by Indians, also said it is "committed to resolving any open questions with India regardless of the upcoming elections". The issue of Indians using the famed secrecy walls of Swiss bank accounts to hide black money has been a matter of great debate in India, while it is becoming one of the major talking points in the run up to Lok Sabha polls scheduled to start next month. India has stepped up pressure on Switzerland in recent months to get information about alleged untaxed money held by some Indians in Swiss banks. However, Indian authorities are believed to have ...

Punjab’s ‘each one, teach one’ leaves High Court boggled AFTER DEATH OF PROTESTER’S BABY, IT’S LIKE ONE EDUCATION VOLUNTEER FOR EACH SCHOOL DROPOUT IN STATE CHANDIGARH: Amusing it may seem but in the run-up to the Lok Sabha Elections, the Akali government of Punjab has appointed 7,612 education volunteers last month to teach 10,840 school dropouts. The government’s move of February 12 was aimed at pacifying hundreds of education volunteers who were protesting in Bathinda after the death of an agitator’s 14-month-old daughter, Eknoor Kaur “Rooth”. However, it brings the pupil-teacher ratio to almost 1:1 instead of 30:1 mandated under The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009. Taken aback by the decision, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the state government to explain. “This is total mismatch,” observed justice Rajesh Bindal, while hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the state government decision. The orders came on Friday when principal secretary for school education ...
Election Commission to hold special camp for riot victims to ensure they vote: To ensure that riot victims are able to cast their votes, the Election Commission would organise a special drive to register the displaced people, who have taken shelter in various relief camps in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas, and issue them temporary voter ID cards. "A special camp will be organised for those living in relief camps in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas," Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said. He said all of them would be registered and issued temporary voter identity cards, suspending their existing ones, if any, so that they could exercise their franchise. At present, over 12,000 persons are living in such camps. Meanwhile, Sinha said over 20 lakh persons participated in "Matdata chaupal" organised across the state. At these chaupals, voters filled forms to get their names included and corrected in the voters' list ahead of Lok Sabha Elections, he said. Such a chaupal would be held every ...

2014 polls: Congress down, BJP far from Mission 272 IANS India Private Limited/Yahoo India NewsBy Amulya Ganguli | IANS India Private Limited/Yahoo India News – Sat 8 Mar, 2014 1 Print Next month's General Elections may prove to be the most significant ever because they can determine the fate of the Congress' first family. It is open to question whether in the event of the party's defeat, as is anticipated, the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty can continue to play its present dominant role. True, the family has survived other setbacks, notably in 1977 and in 1989. But it had the advantage in those days of being headed by charismatic leaders. That was the reason the Congress survived the crushing blows it received in 1977 to return to power in 1980 by raising its tally of Lok Sabha seats from 153 to 353. Four years later, its tally went up to 415 under another popular leader, Rajiv Gandhi. This time, however, the party cannot claim that it is led by widely acclaimed leaders. Neither Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi hav ...

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal is holding a rally at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, with the state having 80 Lok Sabha seats set to play a crucial role in the Lok Sabha polls, beginning April 7. Kejriwal's rally comes on the heels of a three-day yatra in UP last week and later a controversial four-day tour in Gujarat, where he had gone to see for himself how true the development claims of Chief Minister Narendra Modi are. The AAP's yatra, which had started from the party office in Kaushambi in Ghaziabad, covered 15 Lok Sabha seats in the state. What happened in Gujarat, Delhi and UP AAP workers on Wednesday had fought pitched battles with Bharatiya Janata Party activists in Lucknow and Delhi, hours after Kejriwal was detained briefly in Gujarat, shortly after election dates were announced. The former Delhi chief minister was in the BJP Prime Ministerial nominee's state to verify his claims of development. Kejriwal later appealed to his volunteers to stay calm and not resort to any kind of vio ...

I think Kejriwal is getting confused between Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi, between Congress and BJP. It is Lok Sabha Elections not Gujarat State elections.

The loud and long fight: How Nitish and Laloo fell out Nitish Kumar, chief minister of Bihar, seems to be down but not out, with the Lok Sabha contest in Bihar looking like a fight between Laloo Yadav and Narendra Modi. History has a way of coming full circle. For a long time, Nitish Kumar and Laloo Yadav were mates in university and Lohiatie politics. This is the story of how they fell out. This exclusive excerpt from 'Single Man: The Life and Times of Nitish Kumar of Biharfirst' appeared in Scroll.in. By 1992, Nitish was not on talking terms with Laloo Yadav. Proof of that lies buried in a slim but significant volume of letters put together by journalist Srikant, one of the few in Patna who labour over chronicling contemporary politics. The book, ‘Bihar: Chitthiyon ki Rajneeti’, or Bihar: The Politics of Letters, contains a long though little known missive that Nitish wrote Laloo Yadav. It is dated two years before he formally parted ways, but to read it is to be convinced of the rupture between the ...

It seems Christy Fernandez got a CPM Lok Sabha ticket on corporate management quota. " Starting his career as an assistant collector in 1973 in Gujarat, where he worked in barious capacities, Fernandez went on to become secretary to former President Pratibha Patil. He also worked with the Central government for about 14 years in various ministries like home, commerce and petroleum. Fernandez, now 64, retired in 2012. Industrialist Ravi Pillai is learnt to have played a key role in getting Fernandez to be in the fray for LDF. Two years ago, Fernandez had facilitated the visit and stay of Patil at Pillai's new five-star hotel in Kollam. Pillai is known to be close to CPM politburo members Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, M A Baby and Pinarayi Vijayan."

Call it a pre-election rally, or thank the FIIs; the Indian market made two records today. The Sensex hit a fresh intraday high of 21,525; and ended the day at all-time closing high of 21,513.87; up 237.01 points, or 1.11%. The Nifty closed the day at 6,401.15, up 72.50 points, or 1.15%. The flurry of capital inflows by foreign institutional investors suggests that the rally will continue for some more time. Global cues and opinion polls on which party will come to power after the 16th Lok Sabha General Elections would be the driving force for the Indian equities. Economic data also looks good, and this is also seen as a major boost to the markets. India's current account deficit narrowed to $4.2 billion in October-December 2013 as against $5.2 billion a quarter ago. The current account deficit has narrowed from 6.5 per cent of GDP in October-December 2012 to just 0.9 per cent a year later. ELECTIONS IN INDIA India has an asymmetric federal government, with elected officials at the federal, state and local levels. At the national level, the head of government, Prime Minister, is elected by the members of Lok Sabha, lower house of the parliament of India. All members of Lok Sabha except two, who can be nominated by president of India, are directly elected through General Elections which takes place every five years, in normal circumstances, by universal adult suffrage. Members of Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament, are elected by elected members of the legislative assemblies of states and electoral college for Union Territories of India. In 2009, the elections involved an electorate of 714 million (larger than both EU and US elections combined). In 2014, the Electoral Strength of India increased to 814.5 Million. Declared expenditure has trebled since 1989 to almost $300 million, using more than one million electronic voting machines. The size of the huge electorate mandates that e ...

He exposed the scam on the Life Insurance Corporation by Haridas Mundhra. Feroze exposed how Mundhra manipulated the LIC to purchase shares in his little known companies. Bowing to pressure, the Government appointed a commission of inquiry headed by Chief Justice MC Chagla who upheld Feroze’s contentions and said that the Finance Minister should take responsibility . TTK resigned, Finance Secretary was sacked and Mundhra jailed.. Feroze exposed corruption by Dalmia- Jain in the take over of Bennett and Colman by siphoning the funds of public money in Gw ...

The Great Indian Circus! *Every 5 years, regional parties with the communists come together to form Third Front and entertain the nation. *Anna Hazare dumps his favourite Arvind Kejriwal and endorses Mamta. It is sad that someone like Anna with his moral uprightness and championing honesty in public life is openly cheering for a party admonished by the West Bengal High Court few weeks ago. *It appears BJP is in Wonderland, and sure of absolute majority as Narendra Modi’s strategy indicates – he goes to Bihar, runs down Nitish. He goes to Odisha, runs down Naveen. He goes to Bengal, runs down Mamta. If BJP is short of majority, where will they find alliance partner? It appears Rajnath Singh is positioning himself by apologizing to Muslims, as an alternative if Modi is short of partners and not acceptable to others. Hope Rajnath is not firing from Modi’s shoulders! *Kiran Bedi, the talker has dumped both Anna and Arvind, aligned with BJP, expecting a Lok Sabha ticket, having declared Narendra Modi as ...

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has called AAP's success in Delhi Assembly election a major achievement and saluted its electoral strategy. He said, "To be able to win electoral support massively in Delhi on the basis of a program which is about equity even though their understanding of equity may be somewhat distorted, but I thought that what they were trying to do to win it without appeal to communal division, caste division was a major achievement. So I salute AAP electoral strategy and success." On the issue of making policy for the aam aadmi, Sen said, "When it comes to making policy, they have to identify who the aam aadmi are as it is a variable term. Faking News! Or Wishful Thought!!! MPs to be chained inside parliament to prevent incidents like pepper spray attack After pepper spray was used by an MP to protest over Telangana in Lok Sabha today, government has decided that future parliamentary sessions will see the honorable MPs being chained to their seats for their own well-being. The decision was taken by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who wished that every MP was as civilized and well behaved as Dr. Manmohan Singh. “He doesn’t disturb any one. He doesn’t shout. He doesn’t run into the well of the house. Sonia ji asked us to ensure that every MP was like him,” Rajeev Shukla, MoS, Parliamentary Affairs said. After brief psychoanalysis of Dr. Singh, it was concluded that he was well behaved because he was chained. “Figuratively,” Rajeev Shukla explained, “I mean, we often hear criticism that the Prime Minister is not free to take his own decisions and he’s chained by Sonia ji’s orders. And we realized that it was true, and it was ...

BANGLADESHI PARTIES TO FIELD CANDIDATES FOR 2014 General Elections The 2014 Lok Sabha Elections will see new entrants in addition to AAP. Bangladesh’s two main Political Parties, the Awami league led by Sheikh Hasina and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Begum Khaleda Zia, are all set to test their mettle in Indian political waters, keeping in mind the sizeable Bangladeshi immigrant population in India. PUNDITS RECKON THAT THE TWO PARTIES CAN GARNER CONSIDERABLE VOTE SHARE ACROSS INDIA AND EVEN WIN A FEW SEATS IN STATES LIKE West Bengal WITH THE PATRONAGE OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT. Bangladesh President Sheikh Hasina said entering the Indian political fray was long overdue. “When states like Bihar, Odisha, TN with strong regional satraps can dictate terms to New Delhi, why can’t Bangladesh also not get that privilege? Just because we broke off from you guys in 1947, doesn’t mean we can’t partake in the spoils of Indian democracy. • After all, there are probably more Bangladeshis in India th ...

Daya Sagar May it be Omar Abdullah, Rahul Gandhi or Narendra Modi, all say that India feels proud to have 30 to 40 % youthful hands but when it comes to the needs of the youth, favors flow to the ‘elder’ ones near to them. Times are in for the elections to Lok Sabha and J&K Legislative Assembly. The season of promises has started. Those in the government are out to extend as many as possible benefits to prospective voter segments. One of the largest voter segment is the Government Servants, both serving and retired. Government employees are getting 90 % of basic pay as dearness allowances since 1st July 2014 and with an eye on 2014 Elections UPA-II Government has alrea ...
