Fulani herdsmen: Enugu lawmakers move to regulate grazing. September 18 2014 Leave a Comment The Enugu State House of Assembly, on Thursday commenced public hearing on a bill that seeks to regulate cattle rearing in the state. When the bill comes into law, herdsmen who take their cattle to unauthorized areas would be guilty of a criminal offence. The bill entitled ‘A law to make provisions for the control of nomadic cattle rearing in Enugu State and other matters related thereto’ was sponsored by the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, and member representing the Nsukka East Constituency, Chinedu Nwamba. The bill made provisions for the establishment of grazing reserves for cattle rearers in all the 17 local government areas of the state. In an address at the opening session of the public hearing, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Eugene Odo, dispelled insinuations that the bill was just targeted at Fulani herdsmen. Odo rather said the proposed law was aimed at promoting peace, m ...
THE OGBA-UKWU DOME AND CAVE The dome is a naturally carved rock formation in the form of an arena, covering a large dry and sandy area which forms a natural beach around the Ogba waterfall. Next to this dome is the Ogba Ukwu cave considered the largest cave in West Africa, which will take upwards to two hours to explore. It forms a deep and complex rock formation with roomy compartments large enough to take in an entire village. The cave consists of tunnels, heading off in different directions; however, there are two noticeable entrances to the cave. One tunnel in particular is regarded as an escape route which is about two kilometers long, from which one will eventually emerge in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State. At the centre of Ogba Ukwu, is one large area said to have been the living room of the ‘god’ of Owerre-Ezukala. His throne and other compartments within his household. His sentries were always mounted at the two entrances to the cave watching out for visitors and intruders. The ...

Ogun governor, Sen Ibikunle Amosun during an inspection tour of Ilara-Eggua-Tata Road in Yewa area of the state (1)The governor made the disclosure to residents and citizens of the state, during his working tour of Odeda local government area, and also alleged that he was instrumental to how Daniel laid claim to his citizenship of Sagamu town of the state when he wanted to contest the governorship seat of Ogun State in 2003. (2) Daniel, it would be recalled had earlier at Odeda during the Labour Party, (LP), summit openly accused Amosun of selling off all the farmlands in the area to other States. The former governor was then quoted as saying, "when I came to power in 2003, the first place we visited was Odeda and we recognised that agriculture is the main stream here, we therefore established 13 farm settlements. Today, we are sorry that this present government has started selling our farmlands to other neighbouring States. (3) He pointed out that, contrary to the claim by the former governor that he lef ...
Senator Ibikunle Amosun VS Otunba Gbenga Daniel Senator Ibikunle Amosun SAID HE HELPED GBENGA DANIEL TO CLAINM AN INDIGENE OF Ogun State The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and his immediate predecessor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel on Wednesday traded words over the latter’s state of origin. The governor, who was on a working tour to Odeda Local Government Area of the state had said while addressing the crowd of party supporters that Daniel was not a native of Ogun State. He claimed the ex-governor was a Nigerian of Isoko extraction in Delta State. He added that he was part of those who helped Daniel to become a Sagamu indigene. But Daniel said such a remark was an insult on the people of Sagamu, where he said he hailed from, as well as a taboo and an effrontery on its traditional institutions. Amosun was reacting to the allegations levelled against his administration by the former governor during a summit held at Odeda, in Odeda Local Government by the Labour Party two weeks ago. Daniel had accus ...

Kwankwasiyya legacies. From 2011 to date, salaries are being paid as at when due. Projects are in progress. We have huge projects which ordinary states that are getting many times what we are getting cannot boast of. Challawa and Tiga Dam project is costing us N14.2 billion and we are finishing it latest by March. There is the fly-over at Kofar Nasarawa, about a kilometre. There’s also the one near Radio Kano which we want to name Obasanjo Fly-over. Look at the one in Sabon Gari, two kilometres, which is costing over N11 billion, and one at Wuju Wuju, almost N10 Billion. We have the North-West University; a five kilometre road in 44 Local Government Areas, which is over 220 kilometre of dualised roads with street lights. We also have some institutes numbering about 24 and so on. All these are minus free education at all levels, from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, which is our trade-mark.

Boko Haram commanders have taken over the private residence of acting Adamawa State governor Umaru Fintiri in his home town of Kirchinga rendering him homeless whenever he leaves state house. Within the last month Boko Haram has captured Bama, the second largest town in Borno State in addition to Bara, Gwoza, Izige, Damboa, Madagali and Banki as well as Gulak and Kirchinga in Adamawa State. Altogether, the insurgents control about 13 local government areas across northeastern Nigeria, including about half of Borno State. In a huge embarrassment for the acting governor, Boko Haram have converted his private residence in Kirchinga into its command and control centre. One of the Boko Haram commanders is apparently residing in it and using the house as a local headquarters from which local operations are staged. Currently living in State House, Yola, Governor Fintiri can no longer visit his hometown, which was sacked a few weeks ago. His PA's father Tanko Wazumtu, was killed when the insurgents attacked Kirch ...

OIL RIVERS STATE …Why Ibeno opted out …The Okpolupm Etteh Connection …Why LG Chairman Refused To Sign Communiqué The people of Ibeno Local Government have said they should be counted out of the proposed Oil Rivers State. The people, through their elected representatives, under the aegis of Elective Representatives Forum, have drawn the attention of the leadership and members of the just concluded National Conference in Abuja to newspaper and online publications of an alleged inclusion of the area in the proposed Oil Rivers State. In a statement addressed to the Chairman of the Conference and signed by 12 elected office holders of Ibeno extraction, the forum opposed such inclusion. According to them, “While we do not oppose the creation of an additional State, we vehemently reject any attempt at balkanization of the State with the aim of taking out Ibeno Local Government Area or any other Local Government Area for that matter out of the present geopolitical structure of Akwa Ibom State. This does ...
back our Northern domination, By Femi Aribisala The Northern Elders Forum, the apostles of “the North is born to rule,” finally played their joker. They maintained that if the government does not Back Our Girls by the end of October, 2014, Jonathan should forget about running for re-election. This again reveals that there is more political mischief to the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls than initially meets the eye. As a matter of fact, it shows conclusively that Back Our Girls is simply another instrument of Back Our Northern Domination. The First Lady understood this clearly from the onset; which is why she declared that: “There is God o!” The people of Borno understood this. They have always known that their own feudalist leaders are behind the kidnapping of the girls. With the statement of the NEF, Nigerians must no longer be in two minds about this. The kidnapping of the Chibok girls is part and parcel of a cynical plan by some Northern elements to embarrass the government and militate a ...
ADAMAWA, BORNO ELDERS MEET, SEET LASTING SOLUTION TO INSURGENCY: A group under the aegis, Northern Adamawa and Southern Borno Elders (NASBE), has urged the Federal and the state governments to find lasting solution to the recurring attacks in the areas. The Chairman of the steering committee, Sen Paul Wampana, made the call at the maiden meeting of the group in Abuja on Saturday. Wampana told newsmen that the meeting was called to discuss how the group could assist their people, who had been affected by terrorist attacks. The thrust of this meeting is to see how we can collaborate with the Federal and state governments to bring succour to the people affected by the activities of the insurgents. It is also to looked at the long term way of bringing these people back to their domain, resetle them and provide their immediate need,he said. The chairman said the group would get the statistics of the people that had been affected by the attacks so as to avoid a repeat of what happened after the 2012 flood disa ...
Uduaghan’s Unwavering Belief In Democratic Process BY FIDELIS EGUGBO THE beauty of democracy is that it is participatory; it provides freedom for people to express themselves by choosing who leads them or rather, represents them at certain levels. In Delta State, since the commencement of the current democratic dispensation in 2009, the people have been actively involved in electioneering process believing strongly that their votes must count. As such, it did not come as a surprise when Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of the state declared Friday, August 15, as work free day. That declaration was to enable workers in the state to collect their permanent voters card been distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the process commenced on that day in the state. Governor Uduaghan as one who has been active in the electioneering process since 2009 carried out sensitization campaigns for political leaders in the state to mobilize their people to ensure that they collect their permanent ...
PROF. Attahiru Jega, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has restated the commission’s resolve to ensure the successful distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to all eligible voters nationwide. Jega restated this at the opening of a two-day workshop for electoral officers in Anambra, Bauchi, Cross River, Ebonyi, Delta, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, FCT, Jigawa, Yobe and Sokoto, in Calabar on Friday. Reports state that the workshop was organised to train 3,000 officers for the second phase of PVC distribution and conduct of Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR). Represented by Mr Mike Igini, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Cross River, Jega said the exercise was aimed at ensuring success of the 2015 general elections. He warned that no one would be allowed to collect the PVC by proxy, adding that those who flouted relevant laws regarding the exercise risked various jail terms. The chairman said that a reliable voter register was the bedrock of a sustainable democracy, and charged ...
RIBADU, MARWA LIGHT UP GUBER RACE Former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, who recently defected from the APC, and former Lagos State Military Governor Brigadier-General Buba Marwa are among the top contenders for Adamawa governorship bye-elections scheduled for October 11. Marwa was also a chieftain of the APC and contested against Murtala Nyako in the last elections under Buhari's CPC before eventually defecting to the PDP. The removal of former Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State from office and the spontaneous resignation of his deputy, Bala James Ngillari, from office has brought a change in the political calendar of the state. A bye-election has been scheduled for October 11 to elect a substantive governor. Nyako was impeached by the state House of Assembly on July 15 over allegations of gross misconduct. Alhaji Umaru Fintiri, the speaker, assumed office as acting governor following Nyako’s impeachment. The state is currently agog with preparations for the bye-el ...

Inyi Ancestral History In many town Legends and folklores, a certain man sires children, who beget the villages. The rest is a matter of who has the most convincing story. Inyi is no exception. It is agreed that the man Inyi begot many sons. They are Ome, Enugu, Obune, Amankwo, Agbalidi, and the founders of Alum, Umuagu, Nkwere and Akwu. As in such stories, these sons married and had children who founded towns; the sons of the children founded the villages. Some stories sometimes go off the tangent; others tow the well-known path in Igbo mythology. Somewhere along the line, we get back to the same basic conclusion: We are all brethren in humanity. The fact remains that no one knows exactly who first inhabited a particular part of any town. In most parts of Igboland, original populations have survived with such names as “Nwainyi” and "Umuala" (sons of the soil). Pre-Historic Inyi Inyi lived with his Nkwere foster father until he became a fully-grown young man past the age of puberty. Then adversity str ...

A security source told SaharaReporters that hundreds of the militants arrived at the local government headquarters led by armored vehicles they had earlier seized from Nigerian troops in Gwoza, Borno State. The source added that the Islamist fighters were also armed with shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and anti-aircraft mortar guns mounted on pickup vans. They reportedly had it easy overwhelming Nigerian soldiers in the area who retreated quickly in the face of the militants’ heavy gunfire. The militants promptly hoisted their flag and seized the administrative headquarters of Madagali local government area. The local government area now joins a list of towns in Nigeria’s violence-plagued northeast that are under the control of the extremist militants who have declared Western education as the source of moral decadence and corruption in Nigeria. Anambra police DPO resigns over posting to Chibok THERE was confusion in the Anambra State command of the Nigeria Police on Wednesday, as tension rose when some policemen from the command were transferred to the crisis-torn North-East. Police officers who were transferred to Borno and Adamawa threatened resignation, while a Dvisional Police Officer (DPO) from Anaku Division, in Ayemelum Local Government Area (names withheld), resigned. The DPO was said to be due for retirement February 2015, but was posted to Chibok in Borno State as DPO and was heard saying it would be better for him to go home in peace than in pieces since his retirement was at hand. The move shocked the state police command, as many who were transferred to Sokoto and Bauchi states were considering the option of resignation. All efforts to speak with the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Usman Gwarry was not successful and the Police Pubic Relations Officer (PPRO), who would have spoken on his behalf was said to have been transferred to ...

Daily Sun reliably gathered that trouble started immediately the state interim Chairman of the party, Mr. Peter Ezeobi drove into the premises with a retinue of security details but was booed and jeered at by angry members for allegedly unilaterally sacking 14 local government chairmen of the party without recourse to the State Working Committee (SWC). NEW CONSTITUTION EMERGES. 13 additional state for south and 5 for north. LGs scrapped. WHAT A SELFISH??? Apart from scrapping the 774 LGAs, the new constitution gave powers to state authorities to create and run their local government areas. The 18 new states included in the draft constitution are Aba, Adada, Amana, Anioma, Apa, Edu, Etiti, Ghari, Gurara, Ijebu, Kainji, Katagum, New Oyo, Njaba-Anim, Ogoja, Oil Rivers, Ose and Savannah. Delegates have now been given until Wednesday to study the distributed documents and reconvene to approve them. BUT DO THEY HAVE THE MANDATE TO DRAFT A NEW CONSTITUTION?
Kwankwaso urges all Nigerians to reject draft Constitution Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged Nigerians to reject alleged plot by the Presidency to force a draft Constitution on them. He described the draft Constitution issue as tragic, dangerous and one move, whose consequences would negatively affect the whole of the continent. The governor, while speaking to select reporters in his office late last night, sought a regime of collective opposition to the draft Constitution , recalling that he had raised the alarm to the effect of this plot long before its expose by the members of the National Conference in Abuja. He said a glimpse of the draft showed that it contained issues of six year single tenure, 50 percent derivation, scapping of 774 local government areas, and the creation of additional 18 states the limiting of the ministers to eighteen. He alleged that the authors of the draft and the principal intended to resort to a Kangiraroo referendum, cook the figures in their favour and ...

Osun Election: PDP’s Omisore trails APC’s Aregbesola by ‘wide margin’ – Survey *The voters have more confidence in the incumbent. The latest survey by TNS-RMS has placed Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in pole position to win the August 9 gubernatorial election in Osun State. TNS-RMS, a member of Gallup International, said its poll released Thursday, showed the APC dominating on all critical indicators. Mr. Aregbesola, the incumbent governor, and Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, are the two major contenders among the 20 contestants for the governorship ticket. Last Friday, operatives of the Department of State Services, also known as SSS, stormed the corporate head office of the Lagos based TNS-RMS, holding its staff hostage, ransacking its offices and premises and whisking away three of its personnel. A source in the SSS had told PREMIUM TIMES, at the time of the incident, that the operatives were dispatched to the company to confiscate doc ...

Ohafia-Arochukwu Federal Road: Indigenes Decry Deplorable State Of Road Indigenes of Arochukwu, Ututu, Ihechiowa, Isu and Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, South East Nigeria, have continued to lament over the deplorable state of the Ohafia-Arochukwu Federal Road. ... The Indigenes said that the road rehabilitation, which was taken over from PTF by the Federal Ministry of Works under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 1999, has caused economic hardship to indigenes of the communities and also led to underdevelopment in the area over the years because the federal road is the only accessible road that connects Arochukwu to other parts of Abia State. According to the villagers, the journey from Ohafia to Arochukwu should not be more than 30 minutes, but a drive through the shaggy, tough and rough road, takes more than two hours. A situation which one of the commuters plying the road daily said causes more damage to their cars. The road was taken up by the Obasanjo Administration fro ...
Image: Map of Nigeria showing the position of Oyo State Oyo State, popularly referred to as the “Pace Setter” is one of the 36 States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It came into existence with the break up of the old Western State of Nigeria during the state creation exercise in 1976 and it originally included Ọsun State, which was split off in 1991. Ibadan had been the centre of administration of the old Western Region, Nigeria since the days of the British colonial rule. Ibadan, surrounded by seven hills, is the second largest city in Nigeria. It came into existence when bands of Yoruba renegades following the collapse of the Yoruba Oyo Empire, began settling in the area towards the end of the 18th century; attracted by its strategic location between the forests and the plains. Its pre-colonial history centered on militarism, imperialism and violence. The military sanctuary expanded even further when refugees began arriving in large numbers from northern Oyo following raids by Fulani warriors ...

Our correspondent, who visited the hostel shortly after the incidence, gathered that the fire destroyed some properties in room 12 and 13, and injured one student who according to the sources, had been rushed to hospital for treatment before press time. The sources told newsmen that the fire broke out when every student had left the hostel for lectures and wondered how the incident occurred. However, exclusive interviews with other students who said they lived near the rooms that were gutted by the fire, revealed that nobody was in either of rooms during the fire outbreak. The students who spoke under conditions of anonymity, disclosed that the incident might have been the result of electrical fault in one of the affected rooms, noting that so many rooms in the hostel have faulty electrical cables, and that they had been communicating the sit ...
Edo Comrade Cabs operators allege price hike by leasing firm BENEFICIARIES of the Comrade Cabs, an initiative of Edo State Government to cushion the effect of the withdrawal of motorcycles from local government areas in Benin metropolis, have cried out over alleged exorbitant prices that they are being made to pay for the cabs by the leasing company. He lamented that they were later told by the leasing company, C & I Leasing Plc, that the cost of each cab was N2.6 million, describing the hike as an attempt to “enslave” them. The beneficiaries, under the aegis of Comrade Cab Beneficiaries, therefore, urged the governor to intervene so that the current rate, which they ...

ORIGIN OF THE EBIRAS An elder beats the Agidibo to salute the spirits (Photo by EbiraView) Origin of Ebira Ebira Tao is the largest of the several Ebira groups found in about 8 states of Nigeria including the Federal Capital Teritory (FCT). The other sister groups are Egbura Koto and Ebira Mozum (Kogi state), Ebira Panda, Ebira Oje/Toto (Nassarawa state), Ebira Etuno (Edo State), Ebira Agatu (Benue State) Ebira Oloko (Ondo/Oyo/Osun states). Written records about the origin of the Ebira people were those compiled from palace sources by the British colonial administrators in early 20th century. The Ebira, through oral tradition, trace their descent to Wukari (in the present Taraba state) where they were a constituent part of the Kwararafa confederation. In about 1680 AD, they (along with the Idoma and Igala) migrated out of Wukari a chieftaincy dispute. The Ebira later split into various groups and settled in different locations between 1680 and 1750 AD. The Ebira Tao first sojourned with the Igalas at Idah ...

Were you also shocked? No, we know the facts on ground. We live by realities, not propaganda. There are no Nigerian politicians, serious politicians, irrespective of their political parties, that do not know that Fayose is on the ground and that Fayose’s name is a household name in Ekiti. Despite the fact that I have left office for eight years, I remain with the people. I have fought several elections, for and in support of even the All Progressives Congress. Its sad to see some primitive Nigerians happy with the agreement of states creation. Many Nigerians will be banking on the following ideas- More Federal allocations in billions to the states. - And because they are new, the FG will pump in cash to set up facilities. - More Local government areas with Federal allocations of their own - More Senatorial districts (more senators in the senate), bring in more allocations and projects of its own. - More wards, Councillors, projects, its share of allocations too. - More appointments Federal and State - More jobs, grants, facilities, healthcare, offices, schools, etc. Which allocation I laugh with tears in my heart not eyes , if you know what will be the situation of oil production when GEJ leaves office, oil production will go below 200,000 barrels per day, what the Niger delta is planning after GEJ will leave many Nigerians praying for split up and mind you the oil wells are due for renewal in few months to come so use ur statics to see what i can see from afar ...

A mild drama broke out at the National Conference on Wednesday following a threat by former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Ibrahim Ahmed, to arrest a delegate from Edo State, Chris Agbonwanegbe, for challenging the census figure of Northern Nigeria. Mr. Agbonwanegbe, who was contributing to the report of the Conference Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government, had challenged the census figures bandied by states in the North. He called on delegates to address the injustice that led to the creation of more states and local governments in the North as against what is obtainable in the South. Mr. Agbonwanegbe made a specific reference to the disparity in the number of local governments in Kano and Lagos States. He argued that while Lagos has the highest number of people in Nigeria, it has only 20 local government areas, while Kano with a lower pop ...

Sambisa Forest: From game reserve to Boko Haram hideout By Rafiu Ajakaye, At every mention of the Sambisa Forest being the hideout of Nigeria's Boko Haram, one can be forgiven for asking what then stops the military from simply smoking the insurgents out of their lair and end their five-year reign of terror. But it's not that easy.Covering an area approximately 60,000 square kilometers in Nigeria's northeastern region, Sambisa is three times the size of Israel.Designated a game reserve by British colonialists, it extends from the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi and Gombe to northwestern Kano and down to Jigawa State.Meshala Isaac, a teacher at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State, said wild animals – such as lions, leopards, elephants and hyenas – were once common in the vast forest. In Borno State, from which the Sambisa Forest extends to adjoining states, it is bordered in the east by Gwoza local government, which is home to the notorious Gwoza Hills. The hills, which rise some 1300 me ...

On-site sewage inspections coming to Dunoon All on-site sewage management (OSSM) systems in Dunoon will be inspected by Lismore City Council next month and residents are invited to an information session on 4 June. The OSSM inspections in the village (from Duncan Road crossroad to Fletcher Road) are part of Council's routine OSSM inspection program. Residents should have received a letter about the upcoming inspections or people can book an inspection at a convenient time so they can be at home. Council staff have found OSSM system failures are often due to a lack of awareness about how to properly maintain and operate the system. Council staff will be conducting a community education campaign and urge people to get informed as it can save time, hassle and money. There are 7000 OSSM systems in the local government area and around 30% are found to be failing or functioning poorly.
