Liverpool Half Marathon set to be the biggest yet - Liverpool Echo
MEDIA WATCH. Liverpool Echo: For a club famous for its fightbacks the world over, this triumph barely registers on Liverpool's all-time list. Yet there was something highly significant about claiming the scalp of Tottenham after an absorbing contest at Anfield. Make no mistake, Brendan Rodgers' side have played better and lost this season. This wasn't a performance from the top drawer, not even close. Liverpool failed to replicate the free-flowing, fluent passing game which had blown Swansea and Wigan away in recent weeks and they weren't defensively robust. But what the Reds did showcase was a bucket-load of character as they clung on at 2-1 down and then rallied to secure the most cherished victory of Rodgers' reign. The Reds' previous showdowns with teams in the Champions League places this term have been hard luck stories - tales of promise rather than points with performances wrecked by costly individual errors. This time roles were reversed as Liverpool gleefully took advantage of Spurs shooting t . ...

If Skrtel doesn't show the right attitude he could be sold in summer." *Summer transfers - "Centre-backs are going to be a priority. Rodgers needs to replace Carra, and possibly Skrtel and Coates as well. He also needs cover at left-back and another attacking option. The sale of Andy Carroll should generate some cash for his kitty." *Ben Arfa - "I havent heard anything concerete on BR's interest in Ben Arfa." *Summer budget - "There won't be a massive spending spree in summer." *Henderson and Shelvey - "I can't Henderson and Shelvey being sold but a loan move for Shelvey is possible." *Sturridge - "He should be fit for Tottenham." *Suarez - "There is absolutely no reason to believe Suarez will leave in summer. Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has made it clear there is no pressure to sell their star players despite an increase in the club's debts to £87.2 million. - Blog: Suarez should be enjoyed The latest Anfield accounts, released on Monday, showed a rise in debt of £21.8 million during the ten-month period from August 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. Ayre highlighted the cost of rebuilding a squad without any European football under Kenny Dalglish last season as a major factor in that increase. However, he insisted that there isno need to sell names such as LuisSuarez to balance the books, and that the final say in any transferswill lie with manager Brendan Rodgers. "We won't be selling anyone because of the financial position," Ayre told the Liverpool Echo. "If we're selling anyone it'll be because they are deemed by the manager to be surplus to his requirements and obviously if that happens we will be replacingthem and bringing new players inas we always do." Ayre is adamant that Liverpool are in good shape ...

As the debate grows around the PFA Players' Player of the Year award, former Red Jan Molby has backed Brendan Rodgers' claim that Luis Suarez should scoop the prize. The recent form of Tottenham winger Gareth Bale and the consistency of Manchester United goal-getter Robin Van Persie has seen the Uruguayan's odds lengthen to 40/1 with some bookmakers. Molby found that decision scarcely understandable and believes the Reds' No.7 is ahead of the Welshman and battling with the Barclays Premier League's top scorer for the honour. The Dane told the Liverpool Echo: "I find it absolutely amazing that you can get odds of 40/1 on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez to be crowned PFA Players' Player of the Year. "How is Suarez the outsider in a three-way battle with Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale? "Bale is the favourite and he has been fantastic for Spurs in recent months but the season started back in August. "For me, it should be between Suarez and Van Persie, whose goals are firing Manchester United to the title. Van ...

Lucas says Suarez deserves gong. Luis Suarez deserves to win the Player of the Year award over Manchester United’s Robin Van Persie and Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale. According to Lucas Leiva, his Liverpool teammate is the man that should be walking away with the top award from the PFA gala. Suarez is expected to be close to winning the vote alongside the Manchester United and Spurs stars but Lucas feels his superior goalscoring record means he should prevail. Van Persie has found the net 23 times in all competitions since his £24million move to Old Trafford in the summer, while Bale has been on fire the past few weeks, scoring eight of his 19 in the last six matches. Anfield favourite Suarez has notched 25 times in all so far and is closing on the Manchester United striker for the Premier League golden boot. “Luis will certainly be challenging for that award,” Lucas told the Liverpool Echo. “I just hope he wins because I think he deserves it after everything he has done this season. “I thi ...

Former Reds striker John Aldridge has encouraged Liverpool to take advantage of recent momentum by earning as many points as possible in their remaining 11 fixtures. Elimination from the Europa League in gallant circumstances last Thursday has left Brendan Rodgers' side with the Barclays Premier League as their sole focus for 2012-13. The recent 5-0 victory over League Cup winners Swansea City is cause for optimism according to Aldridge, who hopes the team's defensive solidity can continue. "We are on a roll at the moment," Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo. "If you take away that freak result against West Bromwich Albion and the odd blip, then Liverpool have gathered some real momentum over the last couple of months. "The signs are there and with Daniel Sturridge available to play in the league and Philippe Coutinho - we hope - growing into a player then we could have a strong finish to the season. "We have got to really attack these final 11 matches and at Wigan on Saturday night, it may be a case that w ...

Aldridge: Recreate Chelsea atmosphere John Aldridge has urged Reds fans to recreate the special atmosphere of European nights gone by when Zenit St Petersburg visit Anfield on Thursday. Liverpool trail the Russian side 2-0 following last week's Europa League first leg but the former striker says the supporters can help alter the tie in the return. "I can't remember a really special atmosphere at Anfield this season and it's time to put that right against Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday night," the 54-year-old told the Liverpool Echo. "If Liverpool are going to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League then Kopites will have a big part to play. "This is the one cup competition we've got left to play for and everyone has to give it everything they've got - supporters as well as players. "Brendan Rodgers' side need the 12th man from the first minute until the last. We've seen in the past on those famous nights against the likes of Bruges, St Etienne, Auxerre and Chelsea what a difference that backing can m ...

Heres an interesting fact for you: The "Kop" stand was first used by Arsenal or to be more precise "Woolwich Arsenal" formerly know as "Royal Arsenal" and later dropped to just Arsenal as we know it now. A local newsman likened the silhouette of fans standing on a newly-raised bank of earth to soldiers standing atop the hill at the Battle of Spion Kop. In 1906 Liverpool Echo sports editor Ernest Edwards noted of a new open-air embankment at Anfield: "This huge wall of earth has been termed 'Spion Kop', and no doubt this apt name will always be used in future in referring to this spot". The name was formally consummated in 1928 upon construction of a roof. It is thought to be the first terrace officially named Spion Kop. Many other English football clubs and some Rugby league clubs (such as Wigan's former home Central Park) applied the same name to stands in later years. Villa Park's old Holte End is historically the largest of all Kop ends, closely followed by the old South Bank at Molineux, both once reg ...

Sladen died early on 19 April 2011, after having been diagnosed with cancer in early February. Sladen's death was widely reported—on the BBC 1 Ten O'Clock News; as one of the rolling headlines of the BBC News channel for the day; featuring prominently on many commercial television news reports; on the front page of the Daily Mirror, The Sun and the Liverpool Echo; and in the obituary features of almost every UK newspaper. The Doctor Who, Series 6, Episode 1, "The Impossible Astronaut", was aired on the following Saturday; and it opened with a screen dedicating the episode to her memory. Directly after, a special programme called My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen was aired on CBBC. The Hand of Fear was also shown on BBC Four as a tribute. At the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, during the film clips of people who had died in the past year, Sladen was the final person to be shown. Joe Allen admits Liverpool were left hurting following Sunday's shock FA Cup exit at Oldham Athletic – but insists they cannot afford to dwell on the 3-2 defeat with crucial away trips to Arsenal and Manchester City on the horizon. A brace from Matt Smith and Reece Wabara's header secured victory for the Latics at Boundary Park, rendering efforts from Luis Suarez and Allen meaningless as the Reds exited the competition at the fourth-round stage. "Everyone in the dressing room is completely devastated," Allen told the Liverpool Echo. "It's the worst feeling in football. These are the kind of games where mentally you have to be on it for the whole game but we started slowly. "To concede three goals in the manner we did was bitterly disappointing. We wanted to do well in the FA Cup but now we're out. "I don't think we underestimated them. But, no disrespect to Oldham, when you've been knocked out by a team in League One then something has definitely gone wrong somewhere. "It hurts and I feel sorry for the ...

Dietmar Hamann has known about Daniel Sturridge from the very start of his career – and the German is delighted that the 23-year-old now has an opportunity to shine at Anfield. At Manchester City, former Liverpool midfielder Hamann was approaching the end of his distinguished career when the young striker was breaking onto the first-team scene. The short period which saw the two cross paths was enough for Sturridge to make a long-term impression on Hamann, who believes the striker has given the Reds fresh pace up front. "I could see back then what a talent he was," Hamann told the Liverpool Echo, reflecting on their time together at the Etihad Stadium. "Everyone at City was talking about Sturridge as an exciting young player who had a big future ahead of him. "When he came into the first-team squad, he made a big impression. He had great pace, great feet and could finish. "It was just a shame that a couple of injuries set him back. After that the situation at City changed dramatically with the club bein ...
The 20-year-old featured regularly under Brendan Rodgers during the first half of 2012-13, but has not been used in a Barclays Premier League fixture since the Boxing Day defeat at Stoke. Shelvey did excel against Mansfield in the FA Cup earlier this month, though, and is confident of overcoming illness to make the team for the trip to Oldham on Sunday. "I'm really looking forward to Sunday and if I start then I've got to take my chance," the midfielder told the Liverpool Echo. "I haven't played in the league since the defeat at Stoke on Boxing Day. That wasn't a great game for me personally but the team didn't play well either. "Since then I'm the one who has suffered a bit with coming out of the team but you have to accept it. It's the manager's decision and I'm just working hard every day to try to get back in the team. "I know I'm still young and I've played in 26 games already this season but that's not enough, I want to play more. "I've been a bit ill this week but I'll be fine for Sunday and if I g ...

Inter Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho is set to become Liverpool FC’s second signing of the January transfer window. (Liverpool Echo).
Liverpool are edging closer to a move for Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho. The Reds were unsuccessful with their initial bid (£5m), however they have since tabled an £8m offer which they believe will be enough to secure a deal. Liverpool has had their eye on Coutinho for a while, and they feel he could add an extra dimension to their play as he is technically gifted and he has a good turn of pace. The Reds were disappointed to miss out on Wesley Sneijder, who opted to join Galatasaray, after his relationship with former employers Inter Milan broke down. And Coutinho could become Liverpool's second signing of the transfer window after already buying Daniel Sturridge, who has hit the ground running with three goals in his first three games for his new club. According to the Liverpool Echo, manager Brendan Rodgers still wants to add two new faces before the transfer window shuts. They also mention that Coutinho's potential arrival won't put pay to their hopes of trying to land Blackpool's Tom Ince, but the ...
I have been re-reading about the late great John Peel in America. "While in Dallas, Texas, where the insurance company he worked for was based, he conversed with the presidential candidate, John F. Kennedy and his running mate, Lyndon B. Johnson, who were touring the city during the 1960 election campaign, and took photographs of them. Following Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, Peel passed himself off as a reporter for the Liverpool Echo in order to attend the arraignment of Lee Harvey Oswald, and he and a friend can be seen in the footage of the 22/23 November midnight press conference at Dallas Police Department when Oswald was paraded before the media. He later phoned in the story to the Liverpool Echo."

Ayre: We've got the right balance The Reds' managing director has assured supporters that Brendan Rodgers will have the means to enhance his playing options, which have already been boosted by the 'immediate impact' of Daniel Sturridge. Ayre told the Liverpool Echo: "We may or may not add to that further before the end of January. That's something we're still working on and considering. "We will only buy when the right deal is there at the right time. We will continue to add to the group and improve it. Daniel Sturridge signed recently and has made an immediate impact. "Of course we have to progress to be able to hang on to our world class talent. But we wouldn't be doing it if we didn't think we would progress. "You need to have a mix in your squad and we have probably got the best balance in terms of any team in the league. "Our two most senior players have spent their whole careers at this football club. It may have been deemed a 'tap in' to the untrained eye, but Daniel Sturridge's Old Trafford strike demonstrated why he can prove a huge success at Liverpool, according to one of the club's greatest ever goalscorers The 23-year-old made a huge impact after coming off the bench at half-time against Manchester United - and his 57th minute effort gave the Reds genuine hope of salvaging a point when he reacted quickest to slot home after David De Gea could only parry Steven Gerrard's drive. In addition to his goal, Sturridge linked up encouragingly with fellow forward Luis Suarez - and John Aldridge has been buoyed by our new No.15's early showings. He wrote in his column in the Liverpool Echo: "I've said from the word go that I think he will be a good signing for Liverpool, and nothing I've seen so far has changed that opinion. "I was delighted with the goal he got. As a former striker, who scored goal after goal in that manner, it was great to see that movement and instinct from a young player. "How many ti ...

Stewart Downing believes Liverpool can take heart from their second-half showing at Old Trafford - but admitted they paid the price for a first period in which their showed Manchester United too much respect. "In the end we're disappointed that we didn't take anything out of the game. We should have got a draw," Downing told the Liverpool Echo. "We probably let them control it in the first half. We sat back too much and just let them have the ball too much. "We showed United too much respect. The manager stressed at half-time that we needed to push on and put them under pressure more when they had the ball. "He said if we could get at them they would tire and we would get chances. We did that and you saw that in the second half we played further up the pitch. "I thought in the second half our performance was really good. Certainly for the last 20 minutes we had them pegged right back. "You could sense that their fans were getting edgy and Alex Ferguson was shouting a lot of instructions. We had them rattl ...

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of Nuri Sahin. Here is a brief overview of the former Real Madrid man. As reported by Ruhr Nachrichten and the Liverpool Echo, Sahin is set to pen a six-month loan deal that will keep him in Dortmund until the end of the season. The midfielder was surplus to requirements at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers during his stint in England and has only made 10 appearances for Real Madrid since his £10m move to Spain in 2011. The Turkish international grew up less than an hour away from Dortmund and realised a boyhood dream of playing for the club, firstly, with the Dortmund II and then as a 16-year-old in the first-team. In his time in Dortmund, Sahin made 152 appearances, in all competitions, for the club, creating 36 goals from midfield. The appointment of coach Jurgen Klopp saw Sahin move further back and deployed as a deep-lying playmaker, where he flourished, helping the club to their first league championship in nine years. His departure was widely-anticipated gi ...

Liverpool FC News: Daniel Sturridge set to start on bench as Brendan Rodgers shuffles Liverpool... (Liverpool Echo)
Liverpool have been in the press as continuing to look at strengthening their depth this January after already starting the new transfer window with the signing of Daniel Sturridge. Reports from the Liverpool Echo on Jan. 4, 2013 claim that the club are believed to be considering making an offer to Manchester City for England international fullback Micah Richards.
Lucas Leiva today outlined why restoring the Anfield fear factor will be crucial in determining whether 2013 proves to be a happy new year for Liverpool. The Reds' took 24 points from a possible 57 in the 19 league matches at home in 2012, with six games won and seven defeats suffered. Lucas acknowledges such a statistic is a source of disappointment and is targeting a much improved L4 record this year - starting with Sunderland's visit to Anfield tonight. "This year we have to be stronger at home," he told the Liverpool Echo. "If we want to climb the table and have a successful season then we have to be getting a lot more points at Anfield. "We need to make Anfield a much tougher place for teams to come so that opponents who go there fear playing against us. "That's the way it used to be and we need to get back to that. "Let's start the year with a good win against Sunderland and then ensure we build on that. "We have to make the most of our home matches. If we do that then 2013 will be a better year for ...
Liverpool are set to confirm the £12million capture of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea tomorrow. [Liverpool Echo]
Joe Allen believes Luis Suarez demonstrated exactly why he is 'unstoppable' for opposition defences as he took his goal tally for the season to 16 in Sunday's 3-0 win at Queens Park Rangers. The Uruguay striker struck twice in the first half and turned in another outstanding display at Loftus Road to clinch the man-of-the-match accolade. And Allen claims such performances make Suarez a nightmare for opponents to attempt to thwart. "We were all desperate to bounce back after what was a bitterly disappointing result at Stoke," the midfielder explained to the Liverpool Echo. "We wanted to put things right and we did that with the way we played in the first half. As a team we were excellent and that's the way we want to play in every match. "When you've got someone like Luis Suarez you're always going to cause teams problems. When Luis plays like that he's unstoppable. "For his first goal, when he picked up the ball I'm sure QPR didn't think there was much danger. But he created something out of nothing and t ...

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has welcomed their imminent deal for Chelsea striker Danny Sturridge. Aldo wrote in the Liverpool Echo: "I’m delighted we’ve agreed a deal for Daniel Sturridge to sign for us in January. "I honestly believe he’s got the potential to be a really good buy for Liverpool over the coming years. "I did the phone-in on Radio City after Saturday’s win against Fulham and I was surprised by a lot of the negative comments about Sturridge. "As far as I’m concerned, he’s got pace, he’s strong and he knows where the net is. "It’s pretty clear that he needed a fresh start after things had gone stale for him down in London. "He had three and a half years at Chelsea and never really got a run of games. When you look at how many matches he actually started for Chelsea his strike-rate is around one goal for every two games, which is decent. "I remember being really impressed by him when he went out on loan to Bolton two years ago. If he can repeat that kind of form at Anfield t ...
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has challenged his teammates to produce momentum during the Christmas period by continuing their recent impressive form against Stoke City on Boxing Day. The Reds have recorded three victories in their last four Barclays Premier League encounters and now face three fixtures in a week - beginning with a journey to the Potters. And Gerrard is confident that his team are capable of building a run throughout the festive congestion and creating a springboard for progress during the remainder of the campaign. The captain told the Liverpool Echo: "This Christmas period is an important part of the season. It can make a big difference to your league position. "The table is so compact that if you can string two or three wins together you can make real progress up the table. Vice versa, if we don't build on the result against Fulham we could slip back down into mid-table. "The games come thick and fast at this time of year and we need to get some momentum over the festive period. Vil ...
Joe Allen a doubt for Stoke - Liverpool will make a late check on Joe Allen, who has been hampered by a pelvis problem and was rested against Fulham. “Joe’s been suffering a little bit and added to that he has played twice the amount of games at this stage of the season than he had last year,” Rodgers added. “He’s been playing up to three games in a week and physically that has placed a big demand on him.” Source: Liverpool Echo (RS)

Get in!! Next stop justice!! After weeks of campaigning and promoting, football fans around the country have achieved an historic feat – the Justice Collective's Hillsborough charity single 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' is Christmas No.1! Following widespread support for the track - a cover of the original Hollies song featuring some of the biggest names in music, including Sir Paul McCartney and Robbie Williams - it was confirmed as the highest seller of the week on Sunday. Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, told the Liverpool Echo: "It's been absolutely fantastic - credit to them all. "This last week - and since September really - has just been brilliant. I'm looking forward to next year and I haven't said that for over 20 years." Steve Rotheram, MP for Liverpool Walton, who helped organise the single, said: "We have done in nine weeks what it normally takes nine months or more to achieve, working with a phenomenally dedicated team all of whom have worked for free a ...
Martin Skrtel on his volleyed goal against Fulham “It was the first time I’ve scored a goal like that,” he said. “The first goal is always important because most of the teams coming to Anfield want to defend and stay back, then try to counter-attack. We got it today and the game was going easily – that was the key. “In a lot of games we have played well and created chances, but couldn’t take them. I’m glad we scored more than one today. It’s great for the team’s confidence. “ On Boxing Day, we go to Stoke so we’ll try to bring the three points.” Skrtel added: “Last time I scored was the Manchester City game. “Before the game we said it was the last game at Anfield this year – so we wanted to win. We got the win and scored four nice goals. “We have two games away then Sunderland at home – we know it’s not going to be easy. But we know our quality and if we play our game it’s very difficult to play against us. “We know the target.” Source: Liverpool Echo -Cac-

Liverpool Echo now confirming that Daniel Sturridge will have a medical tomorrow.
Liverpool have agreed a £12million fee with Chelsea for Daniel Sturridge but they have yet to agree personal terms due to the demands of the striker's agent. If that deal collapses then Brendan Rodgers will look to sign Paris Saint Germain frontman Kevin Gameiro on loan until the end of the season. [Liverpool Echo]
The likes of James Pearce (Liverpool Echo), Ben Smith (BBC) and Tony Barrett (The Times) are all well-informed guys when it comes to Liverpool transfer news. They all claim that Liverpool have deals in place with the respective clubs of Daniel Sturridge and Tom Ince. The players are expected to be signed for a fee around £16 million, £12m for Sturridge and £4m for Ince. Sturridge is expected to get £60k per week, and Ince £25k per week.

James Pearce of the Echo claims LFC are close to agreeing a £4m deal to bring Thomas Ince back to Liverpool from Blackpool. Blackpool want around £6m for Ince, but LFC insisted on a 35% sell-on clause when Ince joined Blackpool, so would get the 20 year-old for around £4m. Pearce adds: Managing director Ian Ayre has also held talks with Chelsea over a potential £12million swoop for striker Daniel Sturridge. However, the ECHO understands that the Ince transfer is closer to being finalised. KP

A modified training plan has been designed to maximise the performance of Reds defender Daniel Agger this season, with the Dane described as a 'warrior' by his manager. The centre-back has missed just one Barclays Premier League match during the 2012-13 campaign, and boss Brendan Rodgers has been delighted with the style shown by his No.5. "If you look at Daniel Agger and the level of his game, he's like a midfield player playing at the back," Rodgers explained to the Liverpool Echo. "First and foremost, he's a great defender. He's aggressive, he's strong, he wins his headers and wins his tackles. He has that warrior spirit. "He also has that ability to carry the ball. When he has the ball he's a wonderful technician. He understands when to step in, when to make the pass. "I have been delighted with Daniel and I love his character. He's a real winner. "He feels good, he feels strong and he's now arriving up to this Christmas period having been one of the outstanding performers for us." Like defensive part ...
Liverpool legend Tommy Smith on Steven Gerrard I keep hearing people say that Steven Gerrard’s performance levels have dipped but as far as I’m concerned he’s still a tremendous player for Liverpool. I actually felt sorry for Gerrard at times against West Ham as he was having to do too much because Joe Allen was giving the ball away far too often. Gerrard is the only Liverpool player to have played every minute of every game in the league so far and that highlights how important he is to Brendan Rodgers. For most of the season so far Gerrard has had to play a deeper role than usual but with Lucas Leiva now back we’re starting to see the captain get forward more. Source: Liverpool Echo
Reds midfielder Joe Allen is reaping rewards in his maiden season with the club by working on the mental side of his performance with Dr Steve Peters. Peters, who has been enlisted by Brendan Rodgers on an informal basis, has helped some of Britain's finest athletes during the past decade with his method of sports psychiatry. Allen is one player to benefit from Peters' services and the Welshman has explained the impact such preparation can have when taking to the field. "I've been to see him and I've found it very helpful," the 22- year-old reflected to the Liverpool Echo. "In football anything you can add or bring which can benefit us in any sort of way is something that I am happy to have. "Steve really is an incredible person. The things he has done in his career are very impressive. Spending time with someone like him can only rub off on you in a good way. "I'm not sure if the mental side of the game is more important these days but it's certainly something that plays a part in how you play. "I think ...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers tells Joe Cole that it is up to him to decide his own future at Anfield. Cole has scored twice in his last three appearances for the club, but Rodgers admits that the former West Ham and Chelsea playmaker could yet leave in January. "Is his future here? You would have to ask him that," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. "If he's not going to play as often as he wants then he's no different to any player really. Players are about game time and money."
