Happy birthday to the great Johnny Otis (born Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes, December 28, 1921 – January 17, 2012) an American singer, musician, composer, arranger, bandleader, talent scout, disc jockey, record producer, television show host, artist, author, journalist, minister, and impresario. A seminal influence on American R&B and rock and roll, Otis discovered artists such as Little Esther, Big Mama Thornton, Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John and Hank Ballard. Known as the original "King of Rock & Roll", he is commonly referred to as the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues". Otis was born to Greek immigrants Alexander J. Veliotes, a Mare Island longshoreman and grocery store owner, and his wife, the former Irene Kiskakes, a painter. He had a younger sister, Dorothy, and a younger brother, Nicholas A. Veliotes, former U.S. Ambassador to both Jordan (1978–1981) and Egypt (1984–1986)). The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye is Marvin Gaye's 1961 debut album, and the second long-playing album (TM-221) released by Motown. The first was Hi... We're The Miracles (TM-220). It is most notable as the album that caused the first known struggle of Gaye's turbulent tenure with the label. History Between his release from the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and signing with Motown Records' Tamla label in 1961, Marvin Pentz *** Jr. was struggling to find his identity in the music business. A long admirer of different forms of music from early rock 'n' roll, blues, jazz and doo *** *** sought to mix the styles of Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, Little Willie John and Jesse Belvin, first getting involved in groups such as the Marquees, which he joined following his honorable discharge from a tenure in the Air Forces, which soon replaced the original members of Harvey Fuqua's group The Moonglows under the moniker, Harvey and the New Moonglows, with Reese Palmer doing most of the leads though *** did take some lead v . ...
Honored to have Banana joining in the jam with Barry Melton on May 31 at Venice Spring Fling - Free Festival :-) Banana's infatuation with Americana music started in the early fifties growing up in Santa Rosa California when he discovered the 'race station' KWBR in Oakland and started hearing the likes of and buying the records of Lightning Hopkins, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy, Little Willie John, James Brown, and on and on. Then along came Chuck Berry and Ray Charles, and Little Richard and Fats Domino and Elvis and by that time he had learned enough piano to play with a group of local Philly style street corner singers called The Chandells. They got to go to LA to make a record but he was too young to go. He got hooked on guitar as a teen and then the banjo of Pete Seeger and The New Lost City Ramblers and then, just before heading off to Boston University, he heard Flatt and Scruggs for the first time. A life changing experience. One that added a permanent place in his heart and in h ...

Please join Roadhouse Oldies in wishing a very Happy Belated Birthday to singer MABLE JOHN! Mable John (born November 3, 1930) is an American blues vocalist and was the first female signed by Berry Gordy to Motown's Tamla label. John was born in Bastrop, Louisiana. At a very young age, she and her parents moved to Canada where her father got a job in a paper mill. There four brothers (including R&B singer Little Willie John) and two sisters were born. In 1941, after her father was able to secure a better job, the family moved to Detroit, where two additional brothers were born. The family lived in a new housing development at Six Mile and Dequindre Road. She attended Cleveland Intermediate School, and then Pershing High School, which is at Seven Mile and Ryan Road. After graduating from Pershing High School, she took a job as an insurance representative at Friendship Mutual Insurance Agency, a company run by Berry Gordy's mother, Bertha. Within the last week, I rediscovered some "live in the studio" cover tunes recorded last Spring but never released. Due to the reaction I've gotten from my live material, I thought I'd post a few of these never-before-heard recordings. The first is the Grateful Dead's "Box Of Rain"; the second, "Need Your Love So Bad", is a blues tune originally recorded in the fifties by Little Willie John and covered by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac in 1967. More to follow, and thanks for listening.

Top 20 Greatest Love Songs Heroajax September 22, 2008 Human beings have an amazing ability to express love which can form itself in many different ways. Oftentimes, between two people those ways are shown through looks, touches, gestures, etc. Sometimes those shared feelings are expressed media such as writing, painting or sculpture. One amazing expression of love we share comes through music. Music, unlike other mediums evokes a passion and feeling absent in other media. The feelings of not only the singer, but the music come together in a form of expression the other methods lack. Best of all, it can be shared. Others gain an opportunity to feel those shared emotions. Sometimes so much so, that it brings one to tears. It’s one of the most beautiful expressions we have available. Excluded entries are lust songs, songs where people are not yet in a relationship, and breakup songs. 20 Fever Peggy Lee Written in 1956, this song was a rhythm and blues hit for Little Willie John that crossed over and becam ...
The Last Winter Dance Party of America by Pat Fenton It’s 1957, and the three of us, Jacky Lochs, Vinnie Leonie and me, Billy Coffey are doing this Brooklyn strut sort of a walk down Eastern Parkway. Vinnie is a thief. He will steal anything he can get his hands on, doesn’t matter who owns it. That’s just the way he is. But there’s something cool and hip about him. He has an Emerson portable radio in his arms and he’s talking about the rock and roll music that he listens to way down at the other end of the radio dial where the black stations are, where most white boys don’t go. We didn’t know it at the time, but what he was playing for us was the very roots of Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues. Race music they call it. Vinnie has this Little Willie John song turned up full tilt and he’s singing along with it, throwing his head back as he struts along. He knows all the words: “IF I DON’T LOVE YOU BABY GRITS AIN’T GROCERIES, EGGS AINT POULTRY, AND MONA LISA WAS A MAN.” Radio blaring, . ...

Also, it's always nice to see one of your own come back home. That's what it felt like seeing MKG tonight. Love ya, kid.
Please share this with friends. Tomorrow, Senator Feinstein will propose legislation that bans whole types of firearms ... and she is missing the point. She has stated publicly that her goal is to ban *all* firearms, so her motives are clearly in question. I am a sane, responsible gun-owner and I WANT to stop gun violence ... the right way. A way that will work. Emotional reactions can have no place at this table. They punish honest, law-abiding citizens when they have done nothing wrong. Millions of people should never have to pay for the misdeeds of a few, and that's really what we're talking about. Well, it's what I'M talking about. What are YOU talking about? Share it here!
time for a wee poem i think lol HH mark- Jesus Is a Celtic Man Jesus came down from heaven, onto the Gallowgate, 2 hours before an Old Firm game, now that's what I call fate, He jumped into the Barras, to buy a big duffle coat, With a terrible thirst, gnawing at his throat. It's a Little Willie John cover, but White owns it. 4. Danger: Sallie Ford: She sings like nobody I've ever heard. Kind of a weird Buddy Holly gets the hiccups thing, but very original and rocking.' 5. Long Way To Go: Dwight Yoakam: Nothing like a great Dwight song. This is one of them. 6. We Take Care Of Our Own: Bruce Springsteen: Mitt Romney could have played it at a campaign rally. Obama closed the democratic convention with it. An overtly political song that manages to be apolitical. That, comrades, is genius. 7. Fortune Teller: Calexico: Spooky, melodic and great vocals. 8. Heaven: Walkmen: REM broke up. So the ...

Right Sylvia. Written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell. Originally recorded by Little Willie John in 1956.
'Long Road Home' review by SPITZ RECORDS (UK) "From the get go I was drawn in. Before long I was tapping my feet and then moving around. Yet this is an album with many layers - from joyful to sad, from raunchy to soulful, definitely thought provoking. Michael Pollitt's voice has matured into a deeper, life grazed sound which in turn gives a clarity to the words - the sense of loss in 'Broken Heart Blues', making Little Willie John's 'Fever' his own with an extra eeriness of feeling someone else was in the room. The album's moods change yet never move far from the title track of 'Long Road Home'. It is a 'Long Road Home' and when the final track 'Dance in the Rain' ,with its gentle sense of hope, is over far too soon there is a sense of loss in the silent room mirroring much of the atmosphere of the album and leaving us needing more." Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin" is a great tune, insidious and musically understated. Jack White's cover is ham-fisted and lifeless.

If there are any academics , writers , biographers , historians , looking for a subject to research , I would suggest my first and only guitar teacher , Mr. Wilbur Norman .Wilbur is an incredible guitarist and largely an underground figure who has performed with such diverse musicians as Slam Stewart ,Jimmy witherspoon , Lloyd Price , Billy Eckstine , Frankie Lymon , Arnett Cobb , Little Willie John , etc. In addition , he has been active in researching his family's involvement in the underground railroad and civil rights movement . He would make a fascinating study . Check him out .
