Guardian Barca’s £172m ‘guide price’ on Messi Tuesday, 06 January 2015 19:45 Written by EDITOR Category: Abroad LIONEL Messi would cost a whopping £172m should any of Barcelona’s rivals want to take him away this month, according to research into the current market values of the world’s leading players. The Argentine star comfortably tops a CIES Football Observatory countdown of football’s most valuable players and is worth £68m more than his Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The totals serve as a ‘guide price’ for the January transfer window, using a calculation that takes into account player performance, age, contract and the results of their team. The top 10 features six Premier League players - Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas of Chelsea, Sergio Aguero of Manchester City, Raheem Sterling of Liverpool and Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal. But it finds Messi far and away the most expensive player in Europe at the moment. Ronaldo, the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or for the wo ...
The SEVEN reasons why Lionel Messi could make £200MILLION Chelsea move: 1) There are suggestions the Argentine is unhappy with his pay packet at Barcelona. He signed a new contract in May that earns him £16m a year after tax - but his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo earns £19m a year at Real Madrid. This has apparently caused friction between Messi's camp and Barca. 2) Messi is the all-time top goalscorer in La Liga and the Champions League. But he wants to play in the Premier League and turning 28 in June he could feel the timing is perfect for a move to England. 3) Barca have slapped an astonishing £200m price tag on their star man. But according to sources close to the player, Adidas (Chelsea club sponsor and kit supplier) are ready to help fund the deal in order to steal Messi from their big rivals Nike (who sponsor Barca). 4) Cesc Fabregas left the Nou Camp for Chelsea this summer and is trying to persuade his close friend, his future lies at Stamford Bridge too. 5) Messi wants to live in London. Chelsea News: Hazard compared to Messi, Mourinho backed by star, Khedira BLOW, Reus hope: Eden Hazard Former Belgium captain Eric Gerets believes Eden Hazard can become as good as Lionel Messi. Hazard has faced criticism for his lacklustre showings on the international stage but Gerets has pleaded for patience. He said: "Disappointment is too strong. Even Messi needed a lot of time before he was the saviour of the national team. "It didn't happen for several years. You have to give Hazard more time. It will come. He has too much talent." Jose Mourinho Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has laughed off claims Jose Mourinho puts pressure on his players to skip international duty . The Blues boss has been involved in a lengthy club v country row with Vicente Del Bosque over Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. However, the Spanish defender has given his backing to Mourinho. Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard prepares to face Manchester United with the world at his feet By Henry Winter Hazard strides into Old Trafford on Sunday as Chelsea’s Player of the Year, as PFA Young Player of the Year and hailed as a great entertainer who will eventually rival Lionel Messi, according to his many disciples. As he prepares to take on Manchester United, the new, improved Hazard is testament to his heightened powers of dedication and the wisdom of listening to a great manager in Jose Mourinho. Eden Hazard has arrived. In a season illuminated by the likes of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas at Chelsea, by West Ham United’s Diafra Sakho, Graziano Pellè at Southampton and West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino, Hazard has been one of the most eye-catching stars. The Belgian’s bravura display in last the 6-0 thumping of Maribor last Tuesday raised questions again in certain sceptical minds over whether he delivers only against lesser sides, an old canard in urgent need of neck-wringing. Hazard: I can be one of the best in the world The 23-year-old has shone alongside Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas for the rampant Blues but feels he is still some way behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Oct 15, 2014 18:10:00 Eden Hazard insists he is not one of the five Best Players in the world, but feels he is close to it and will improve to become one. Hazard, who netted 17 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last term, has been influential in the Blues' unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign. Last month it was reported that the Belgium international is on the verge of signing a new five-year-contract at Stamford Bridge, with a total package believed to be worth around €250,000-a-week. But the 23-year-old believes he must still improve in order to be considered on the same level as the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. "I'm not a top-five player yet," Hazard told reporters. "Maybe I'm close to it, but I still have to work on some aspects. "You can only be part of that grou ...
Cesc Fabregas believes Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard can have the same impact on the Blues as Lionel Messi has at Barcelona. Fabregas played alongside four-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi for three years before making a close-season move to Stamford Bridge where, alongside Hazard, he has helped Chelsea to the top of the Premier League. While the ex-Arsenal captain has been consistently impressive since returning to the English Top Flight, Hazard too has been in fine form - winning and scoring the penalty that helped lead Chelsea to victory against Fabregas' former club on Sunday. And Fabregas feels the performances of Hazard will be key to Chelsea's success this term. "He is the link between midfield and attack for us; he is our Messi because he makes the difference," the Spaniard told radio station Cope. "We have a young team but we are very positive about the future." Much of the discussion prior to Chelsea's 2-0 win over Arsenal had centred on Fabregas coming up against a club he spent eight years at bef ...

Messi eager to win World Cup 30 May 2014 10:00 Barcelona star Lionel Messi envies his FIFA World Cup-winning Spanish team-mates and is desperate to add the trophy to his collection. The Argentina captain's standing in the game has been questioned, with suggestions that he needs to win the showpiece event to be considered among the greats. Messi, who has won the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times, aspires to lift the World Cup, just like club team-mates Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets, among others. "I want to win the World Cup, but not just so that I can change people's opinion of me. I want to add the World Cup to the list of trophies I have won," he told ESPN. "I envy my Spanish friends, I wish I were in their place having already won the tournament." In 2001 he managed a Barcelona under-13s side that included Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi. And just over a decade later he coached the same three players to the Spanish league title. Messi had become the best in the world; Pique and Fabregas had become World Cup winners with Spain; and Vilanova had become Barcelona manager. Twice he arrived at the club alongside Pep Guardiola: first as a young hopeful in its La Masia academy in 1984; and then to coach alongside him in 2007 first winning the third division with the B-team and then taking over the first team and bringing home 14 of a possible 19 trophies in the greatest four seasons in the club’s history. barcelona and the fans we always think of you
It's almost a given that Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets start. The question is, will Cesc Fabregas start as well? And if so, who will be the other forward besides Lionel Messi - Neymar, Alexis Sanchez, or Pedro?
Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to become Barcelona's all-time record goalscorer as they cut the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid to four points ahead of their meeting next weekend with a 7-0 thrashing of Osasuna. After a slow start, the hosts were sparked into life by Messi's opening goal as he flicked home at the near post from Alexis Sanchez's cross. Sanchez was next on the scoresheet as he finished off a similar move involving Andres Iniesta and Jordi Alba before Iniesta's wonderful strike from 25 yards made it 3-0. Messi then broke another record by registering his 370th Barca goal to overtake Paulinho Alcantara as the club's record marksman before rounding off his hat-trick in between further strikes from Cristian Tello and Pedro Rodriguez. Barca boss Gerardo Martino had left Cesc Fabregas and Neymar on the bench after their exertions in the 2-1 win over Manchester City in midweek with Sanchez and Pedro recalled to the starting line-up. Amazingly, the Catalans had to withstand a bright opening fro ...

Fabregas tells Mourinho & Barca detractors to 'shut up' The midfielder has lashed out at those who have suggested the Catalans are no longer destructive and says the team will put their all into the second leg too By Jon Fisher 18 Feb 2014 22:26:00 Cesc Fabregas hit back at Jose Mourinho and the rest of Barcelona's detractors, telling them to "shut up" after the Catalans claimed the initiative in their Champions League knockout clash with Manchester City. The first leg of the last-16 tie at the Etihad Stadium was finely poised until the 54th minute when City defender Martin Demichelis hauled down Lionel Messi with the Argentine through on goal. Although initial contact may have been outside the area, referee Jonas Eriksson awarded a penalty and issued Demichelis with a red card. My thoughts! The excuses came thick and fast from Manuel Pellegrini and yet there are 100 reasons or more why Barcelona tore Manchester City apart. Five Barcelona players - on City’s own ground, for goodness sake - had more than 100 touches on the ball. They were: Xavi (144), Cesc Fabregas (123), Andres Iniesta (110), Sergio Busquets (108) and Lionel Messi (103). Compare that, like for like with the £200m super team that is Manchester City and it is embarrassing. Yaya Toure (72), David Silva (62), Fernandinho (40), Alvaro Negredo (32) and Jesus Navas (28). When will we ever learn? Not now. Maybe never. Until English football learns that Barcelona and Bayern Munich have turned passing into an art form, their teams will find it tough to succeed in the Champions League. Yes, it is possible to nick the occasional result and stiff a team of Barcelona’s class on the break from time to time. But it's not possible every time to pull the plan off perfectly. At this time three weeks ago, it was easy to get car ...

Messi's pride restored, says Martino (AFP) Monday 10 February 2014 Share Messi's pride restored, says Martino © Getty Images Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said Lionel Messi had answered his critics in the best way possible as the Argentine scored his first two goals from open play in 10 league games as the Catalan giants won 4-1 at Sevilla on Sunday. Sevilla had gone ahead early on under the torrential rain at the Sanchez Pizjuan, but Messi led his side's revival as he firstly crossed for Alexis Sanchez to bundle home the equaliser before finishing off a fine counter-attack with a stunning half-volley just before half-time. The four-time FIFA World Player of the Year doubled his tally for the evening with another sweet finish from Andres Iniesta's pass 11 minutes after the break and Cesc Fabregas rounded off the scoring three minutes from time. Messi had been questioned for his poor goalscoring form since returning from a hamstring injury at the start of the year, but Martino insisted it was only a mat ...

Lionel Messi returned from a two-month absence with two goals as Barcelona eased towards the quarter-final of the Copa del Rey with a 4-0 win over Getafe. Cesc Fabregas had already put Barca 2-0 up by the time Messi, who had been out since November with a torn hamstring, arrived from the bench shortly after the hour mark but the Argentina star added a late double of his own to ensure his side take an ominous lead into the second leg. Messi almost set up Pedro minutes after joining the action but he soon found the back of the net himself, pouncing on a loose ball after Martin Montoya ran into trouble. The returning star added his second three minutes later, in the third minute of stoppage time, when he raced onto Alex Song's through-ball.

Reports in the Daily Mail are suggesting that Andres Iniesta's row with Barcelona over a new contract may tempt Manchester United to make an audacious bid for the exceptional midfielder. Alexis Sanchez continued his fine scoring form when he tapped in the opener after nine minutes. Fabregas completed the scoring with a clinical finish in the 54th minute. Sanchez scored his sixth goal of the season to get the visitors up and running. Fabregas was played through on goal by Pedro and, after his shot was beaten away by Yoel, Sanchez tapped in the rebound. The visitors then went close on the break as Lionel Messi's shot flew across goal. Great News! Looking for a Larsson - Klose, Lewandowski & the strikers who could move to Barcelona in January. For the first season in memory, Barcelona do not have a recognised centre-forward in their first-team squad. Even though Lionel Messi has largely been used in the 'false nine' role in recent seasons, the Catalans could count on David Villa as an alternative, as well as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o in previous seasons. Barca boast excellent options among their fantastic forwards, of course, with Cesc Fabregas, Neymar and even Alexis Sanchez suited to a central role in addition to Messi. None of them, however, are out- and-out strikers - and coach Gerardo Martino is keen to boost his front line by bringing in a recognised centre-forward. There is one condition, though: the player who comes in must be prepared to bide his time on the bench and wait for opportunities, much like Henrik Larsson did during his time at Camp Nou between 2004 and 2006. Barca hope to identify a 'new Larsson' - a playe ...
MISSING MESSI Just in case you've been living in a cave with Bear Grylls or Ray Mears since the weekend, I'll spell it out again. Lionel Messi, maybe the greatest footballer of all time, is not playing. The 26-year-old Argentina forward, winner of four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards, injured his thigh in the 2-0 win over Almeria on Saturday, ruling him out for the next two to three weeks. Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas "Obviously Lionel is the Best Player in the world, I don't even have to say that and you obviously will miss a player of his talent and dedication. "We rely on him a lot, he is the Best Player, the one that scores more goals, the one that does the offensives tasks, he is always there for us, he gives assists, he is the best "He can win a game at any moment so we are sad for that but you cannot feel sorry for yourselves because you are missing a great player. "Without Messi we will have to take more responsibility. "I think we all have to step up and make sure that we don't feel his abse ...

Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are on red alert after Barcelona decided to allow young star Gerard Deulofeu to spend a season out on loan. The 19-year-old is seen as one of the brightest youngsters in Europe and has been linked with the Premier League trio, as well as Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund. And Barcelona are willing to allow the Spaniard to leave on loan to either a club in England or Germany. The Catalan side are aware that Deulofeu is unlikely to make the breakthrough into the Barcelona first-team this season due to the purchase of Neymar to play alongside Lionel Messi, while the likes of David Villa, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas are also all able to play in the front three. And that means he will be allowed to go out on loan, with Barcelona certain to make it clear there is no chance of the deal becoming permanent at the end of the season as they see his long-term future at the Nou Camp.

La Liga outfit Sevilla are reportedly willing to negotiate with Liverpool over the transfer of Ivan Rakitic, it has emerged. The Spanish side had a poor season this year, finishing 9th in La Liga, and are expecting to face the departures of some key players, having already sold winger Jesus Navas to Manchester City for £14.9million. They could also receive a number of offers for top scorer Alvaro Negredo, who is a target for Atletico Madrid. Rakitic is another of Sevilla’s more impressive players, and has found himself on Liverpool’s radar after scoring 8 goals and providing 10 assists this season. Only big names from the top two, such as Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Mesut Ozil, Cesc Fabregas, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, have created more goals for their team-mates in Spain this year. Brendan Rodgers was reportedly ready to open with a £12million bid for the Croatian, who has been compared with Luka Modric, and although Sevilla are willing to sell, they may hold out for closer to £16milli ...

Barcelona Prepare £17m Plus Player Swap Bid For Chelsea Playmaker Juan Mata Catalan giants plotting ambitious move for Chelsea attacker. La Liga champions Barcelona could make a shock move to try and sign Juan Mata from Chelsea, according to El Economista. Mata, formerly of Spanish side Valencia, has been a superb signing for Chelsea since he joined the club for £23.5million in 2011, and has shown he would fit Barcelona’s style of play perfectly. The 25-year-old can operate either as a winger, or as a deep-lying central midfield playmaker, and is very much in the Xavi and Andres Iniesta mould, though arguably with more of an end product, scoring 20 goals and providing a phenomenal 35 assists for the Blues this season. With Barcelona undergoing a summer clear-out this year, a number of under-performers such as Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas could leave, making space in the team for Mata, whom the Catalans feel would combine perfectly with Lionel Messi. To take Mata they must give us _. BROWN
Chelsea must show faith in youngsters Chelsea opinion: Chelsea risk losing a host of young stars if they refuse to give them the chance to play La Masia - no it’s not a club, nor is it a famous place as such. But the word is synonymous for a perfect youth academy. La Masia has been churning out talent after talent into the Barcelona first team. The likes of Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi are all the finest of the academy! That’s not all; many other clubs, some in Spain, others abroad have also been raking in the benefits. Most notable of which was Arsenal getting seven years out of the fantastic Cesc Fabregas before he returned to his boyhood club. It is not just Barcelona who has a fantastic youth system in place. Real Madrid are also quite adept in producing superstars like Raul, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and the likes. Coming to England, Manchester United have been producing and nurturing fine talent into the world of football for some time now! Arsenal has also been able to ...

Roura: We can overcome Milan Barcelona's stand-in coach Jordi Roura has said he feels his players are "looking forward to overcoming Milan" as they try to recover from a 2-0 deficit in the Champions League. The last week has seen much soul-searching in Catalonia after the setback in Italy was followed by two crushing defeats to Real Madrid in five days. The results left Barca players including Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Javier Mascherano, Jordi Alba and Cesc Fabregas talking of feeling low. Many observers have pointed to the importance of the absence of coach Tito Vilanova, who is receiving medical treatment in New York. But speaking after training on Friday, Roura, Vilanova's assistant, said his 30-year association with the club had shown him that both positives and negatives tended to be overemphasised. "There is always a tendency to get overly euphoric when we win and excessively pessimistic when we lose," he explained. "We all want to come back against Milan. We had a long week but the response [of ...
MATCH REPORT FOR BARCELONA VS Real Madrid 26/02/2013 Barcelona 1 Real Madrid 3 Real Madrid crushed bitter rivals Barcelona on their own turf in the Camp Nou to reach the Copa del Rey final. Cristiano Ronaldo was the inspiration with two goals and defender Raphael Varane scored his second of the tie before Jordi Alba netted for Barcelona. Madrid go on to face either Sevilla or Atletico Madrid in the final, with their city rivals taking a 2-1 aggregate lead into tonight’s second leg. Lionel Messi sent an early shot across the face of goal but it was Ronaldo who fired the first meaningful salvo when he won and converted a 13th-minute penalty. The Portugal star was chopped down by Gerard Pique, who was booked, and Ronaldo fired the spot-kick low into the net as Pinto went the wrong way. Barca’s mood was not helped when Cesc Fabregas was almost immediately denied a penalty at the other end, though there appeared to be no contact from either Alvaro Arbeloa or Angel Di Maria. Ronaldo sent a 20-yard effort bo ...

Lionel Messi scored his 300th goal for Barcelona then promptly scored his 301st as the La Liga leaders came from behind to beat Granada 2-1 on Saturday. The Argentine pounced when Granada keeper Tono could only parry a Cesc Fabregas drive in the 50th minute to level the scores after Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has given the home side the lead in the 26th minute. The poacher then turned game-winner 17 minutes from the end, curling a free kick over the wall and past the flailing hand of Toto to register his 36th goal of the Barca's league campaign. Read: U.S. soccer star 'comes out' as *** Messi has now scored in the last 14 league games to help the Catalans to a 15-point lead over second-place Atletico Madrid who travel to Valladolid on Sunday. Former French international Robert Pires believes Andres Iniesta is Barcelona's Best Player, putting him ahead of Lionel Messi. Iniesta, a World Cup and European champion with Spain, has twice fallen to the Argentinian in the Ballon d'Or, finishing second and third respectively in 2010 and 2013. But Pires weighed into the argument by insisting the diminutive Spaniard is the driving force behind Barcelona's sustained success. "For me, Iniesta is the Best Player at Barca," Pires told La Xarxa Radio. "We always talk about Messi, but without Iniesta Barcelona are a different team. "He is the master of the team. He is the one who sets the pace for the whole team. He plays very easy." However, Pires also believes Former Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas is staring to exert his influence on the Barcelona dynamic. "For me, the success of Cesc has been no surprise. He is doing very well and is a fixture in the side, and has been scoring a few goals," he said.

HONOURS EVEN AT THE BERNABEU Real Madrid and Barcelona have it all to play for in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final after an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night. Both sides had plenty of chances during an enthralling first half but the opener did not arrive until five minutes into the second period when Cesc Fabregas latched onto Lionel Messi's through ball to fire past Diego Lopez. Madrid got the equaliser their performance merited nine minutes from time when the game's outstanding performer, Raphael Varane, rose to head home Mesut Ozil's cross. The big news before the match was the decision of Madrid coach Jose Mourinho to hand a debut to goalkeeper Lopez after he rejoined the club from Sevilla last week as cover for the injured Iker Casillas. But it was Barca's second-choice goalkeeper, Jose Manuel Pinto, who was first into the action, clawing away Cristiano Ronaldo's dipping free-kick from under his crossbar. Barca began to take control after that early scare and the ...
Real Madrid hold Barcelona to Copa del Rey draw Cesc Fabregas struck what may prove a priceless away goal as holders Barcelona drew 1-1 at depleted arch-rivals Real Madrid in an entertaining and closely fought King’s Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday. Lionel Messi sent Fabregas clear five minutes after halftime at an electric Bernabeu stadium enjoying the second “Clasico” of the season and the Spain midfielder finished with ease past Real goalkeeper Diego Lopez. Barca missed several clear chances to extend their lead before Real centre back Raphael Varane crowned a fine performance by leaping to head home an equaliser from a Mesut Ozil centre seven minutes from time. Despite having a slight advantage for the second leg at the Nou Camp at the end of next month, Barca may live to regret not scoring more against a Real team missing regular keeper and captain Iker Casillas and Pepe through injury and the suspended Sergio Ramos. “These games are always very tough,” Fabregas said in an interview w ...

Arsene Wenger revealed that he believes Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas will return to Arsenal one day.Wenger said losing Fabregas to Barcelona convinced him he had to turn to English talent to improve his chances of hanging on to his future stars and building another successful Arsenal team. The Gunners manager could not stop Fabregas returning to his beloved Barcelona in the summer of 2011, but insists the Emirates is where the 25-year-old’s heart lies so much so that his former captain could wear the famous shirt again. Cesc Fabregas has scored 6 goals and made 10 assists in La Liga. Fabregas and Iniesta tops the assists table with each 10 and Lionel Messi in 3rd place with 7 assists.
In his first game since winning an unprecedented fourth Ballon d'Or, Lionel Messi scored one goal and set up two more to steer Barcelona to a 3-1 win at Malaga on Sunday as the Spanish leaders reached the season's midway point with an almost immaculate record. Messi pounced on an ill-advised back pass by Malaga's Ignacio Camacho in the 27th minute to score for the ninth league game in a row. He then set up Cesc Fabregas to score in the 50th and substitute Thiago Alcantara to add another eight minutes from time. Barcelona has won all 10 away games this season and is unbeaten in the competition after a league-record start of 18 wins to go with one single draw.
Lionel Messi celebrated his fourth successive Ballon d'Or award by once again inspiring Barcelona to a victory 3-1 at Malaga. Messi won his record-breaking FIFA honour on Monday, taking the honour ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, and continued his magnificent scoring run by breaking the deadlock tonight in the 27th minute. Tomas: Record Barca become best ever winter champions The Argentinian then teed up Cesc Fabregas to put Barcelona two goals to the good after the interval before substitute Thiago made the game safe late on - despite Diego Buonanotte grabbing a consolation in the final minute. It was ultimately a comfortable evening for the Primera Division leaders, who are 11 points clear of closest challengers Atletico Madrid. Malaga upset Real Madrid last month at La Rosaleda and although they were started well tonight, they never recovered from Messi's opener. The 25-year-old had the first opportunity of the match when Weligton failed to cut out Andres Iniesta's pass and a goal appeared ine ...
FOOTBALL:- [La Liga] Javier Mascherano has claimed that Barcelona's 3-1 victory over Malaga on Sunday flattered the Liga leaders. Goals from Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara handed the Catalans all three points as they extended their lead at the Primera Division summit to 11 points. However, the Argentina international was quick to applaud Manuel Pellegrini's side for making the match an entertaining spectacle by adopting a positive approach at La Rosaleda.

Barcelona picked up their 17th win of the season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over their Catalan neighbours Espanyol at Camp Nou. A sublime opening half hour from Barca did all the damage, with Xavi opening the scoring after just 10 minutes. Pedro soon netted a double before Lionel Messi slid home from the spot, after Cesc Fabregas had been brought down in the area. The winter break proved unable to disrupt the Blaugrana's typically flowing football as they took command of the game from the first second, seemingly buoyed by the return of Tito Vilanova to the bench after surgery. Operating from the left, Andres Iniesta was dancing past the Espanyol defence with ease and it only took 10 minutes for him to create the opening goal. Having been picked out in space by Messi, Iniesta drilled a low cross into the area which Xavi coolly slotted home unmarked. The hosts were unrelenting and after Kiko Casilla made a great save to keep out Iniesta in the 13th minute, it took just another couple of minutes for the se ...

MADRID, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Leaders Barcelona kept up their relentless pace at the top of La Liga with a 4-0 thrashing of city rivals Espanyol and 10-man Real Madrid needed two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo to see off Real Sociedad 4-3 on Sunday. Argentina's Lionel Messi, favourite to collect a fourth world player of the year award on Monday, scored 91 goals for club and country in 2012 and started out where he left off with a clinical penalty at the Nou Camp. A double from Pedro and another from Xavi completed the scoring as the unbeaten Catalans racked up their 17th victory in 18 games to move on to 52 points. They are 11 points ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid who were held to a 1-1 draw at Real Mallorca. Atletico dominated but struggled without suspended top scorer Radamel Falcao until Raul Garcia bundled in from close range in the 72nd minute but Kevin Garcia grabbed a scrappy equaliser for the hosts three minutes from time. Champions Real stayed 16 points adrift of Barca in third after a topsy-tu ...
Barcelona 4-0 Espanyol: Pedro brace gives Barca perfect start to 2013 Four goals in the first half saw Barcelona cruise to a derby win over Espanyol as Tito Vilanova returned to the dugout. The home side welcomed the return of coach Tito Vilanova back to the dugout and his presence inspired a first half performance to be admired. Pedro Rodriguez was in superb form, as was Lionel Messi but it would be midfielder Xavi Hernandez who broke the deadlock. Andres Iniesta clipped the ball in following a through ball from Messi and Xavi was on hand to poke the ball past Espanyol keeper *** Casilla. Five minutes later and Barca got a second, this time Cesc Fabregas crossed low for Messi, whose shot hit the knee of Pedro, who celebrated his first goal in a very long time. On the half hour mark the Spanish winger would be celebrating again when Sergio Busquets played a defence splitting pass for Pedro to chip the ball over the helpless Casilla. Minutes later and it would be four as Fabregas was fouled by Casilla and ...

Messi's 11th double of the season leaves him one goal shy of Gerd Mueller's record of 85 for club and country in one year, set in 1972. Barcelona led 3-0 by halftime thanks to goals by Gerard Pique, Messi and Adriano. Cesc Fabregas and Messi scored after halftime. On Tuesday, Marca have reported that Barcelona Head Coach Tito Vilanova, is somewhat concerned over the performances and the role of Former Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas in the early stages of this season. It is also reported that Vilanova could be willing to let Fabregas return to Arsenal for no less than £35 million. Fabregas recieved his dream move when he joined the La Liga giants in 2011, but he has struggled to nail down a comfortable starting position, whilst still making 49 appearances. Being adapted as a 'false number 9' limits his opportunities as he is up against the worlds best in the shape of Lionel Messi for that role. Having been tried in deeper roles in midfield, he has struggled to perform up to Barcelona's high expectations there and will now be doubting his own future. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder is up against some of the highest quality of attacking options and it will be difficult to nail down his place now. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would take Fabregas back in an instant ...

Lionel Messi has another chance to reach Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year after Tito Vilanova included him in Barcelona's squad to play Benfica in the Champions League. Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Javier Mascherano, Pedro, Jordi Alba and Cesc Fabregas were all rested from the squad and replaced with youngsters from the club's youth Academy. "We have some players just back after injury and others from Barca B and we would like to see how they perform," Vilanova said. "I am sure the motivation will be good. They are professionals. Benfica are still playing to qualify for the last 16."

The victory sees the Blaugrana make the best- ever start in the Spanish top-flight's 113-year history, surpassing the mark set by Radomir Antic's Real Madrid side of the 1991-92 season, while Messi's exploits, his 83rd and 84th goals in 2012, moved him to within one of Gerd Muller's 85-goal record in a calendar year. The marker was set from the 23rd minute, when Gerard Pique poked home the opener, before Messi and Adriano also struck to send the Blaugrana into a fully deserved three-goal lead at half-time. Cesc Fabregas, 7 -- Managed to add much needed mobility and participated in many creative combinations that ended up unbalancing the game in Barca's favor. Continuously ran from deep to put himself into goalscoring positions, especially after the half-time break when Levante left more space at the back. Also managed to score the fourth Barcelona goal after cleverly dribbling the Levante keeper. Lionel Messi, 8 -- Defended by a very tight Levante back four during the first half, when he didn't find much space at all. Luckily for Barcelona, everything changed after the break: La Pulga scored the first with a cheeky flick over Gustavo Munua and the second with a virtually unstoppable short-range strike. His tally is now 82 goals for club and country in the 2012 calendar year, taking him dangerously close to Gerd Muller's all-time record.
1Levante 0-4 Barcelona: Ingenious Iniesta inspires Blaugrana to victory The Spaniard was at his brilliant best in Valencia, scoring one goal and creating three others, including two for Lionel Messi, as the league leaders ultimately ran riot By Mark Doyle Nov 25, 2012 9:45:00 PM Barcelona maintained their stranglehold on the top spot in La Liga with a resounding 4-0 victory over Levante on Sunday evening. Andres Iniesta was the undoubted star of the show, creating two goals for Lionel Messi and one for Cesc Fabregas, as well as scoring a stunner himself. Levante, who missed a late penalty, had held the leaders scoreless until the interval but they simply had no answer to Iniesta's genius after the interval and the visitors ultimately coasted to a victory that restores their three-point lead over Atletico Madrid, and, perhaps more significantly, moves them 11 points clear of reigning champions Real Madrid. Unsurprisingly, Barcelona dominated possession early on, but it was the hosts who threatened first, w ...

Cruyff then discussed the impact Lionel Messi has made on both Barca and Argentina, and admitted that although the forward remains "on a different planet", without the help of his supporting cast at Camp Nou he is not as effective. "Messi is the star, of course. But he only plays so well because he has [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi or [Cesc] Fabregas to help him," he continued.
With Lionel Messi as a three-time goal-taker and Cesc Fabregas as a three-time goal-maker, 10-man Barcelona won a wild 5-4 shootout at Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish league on Saturday. It looked to be a one-sided affair when the league leaders raced into a three-goal lead through Jordi Alba, Cristian Tello and Messi after just 18 minutes. However, Depor replied with a Luis Pizzi penalty and an Alex Bergantinos goal before Messi struck again to put Barca back in the driving seat. Pizzi's second of the match then set the nerves jangling once more and the dismissal of Javier Mascherano gave the visitors further food for thought until Messi made it 5-3 with his treble. The excitement did not stop there though, and an own goal from Alba brought Depor back within touching distance of their opponents with 11 minutes remaining. However, despite their best attempts to grab a deserved equalizer, their luck ran out as Barca held on for the points. Barca coach Tito Vilanova had left influential midfielder Xavi o ...
Lionel Messi scored his 21st hat-trick for Barcelona as the 10-man La Liga leaders scrambled an astonishing 5-4 win at Deportivo La Coruna. The visiting side winded the newly promoted team with three goals in the opening 18 minutes as Deportivo were left chasing shadows at a packed Estadio Riazor. Jordi Alba raced onto Cesc Fabregas's pass on three minutes to give Barca the lead before Christian Tello accepted a lovely pass from Messi to drive a shot through the legs of Depor goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubía four minutes later. Barca seemed to be out of sight when Messi buried the ball high into the net to put his side three goals clear on 18 minutes. But Deportivo mounted a rousing recovery aided by some slipshod defending. Pizzi converted a penalty on 26 minutes after Javier Mascherano brought down Riki. Alex Bergantiños then walloped a shot at goal from the edge of the box on 37 minutes that somehow crept under the body of the shoddy Victor Valdes. Deportivo were suddenly right back in the match, but Mess ...

Past reports have mentioned that Sandro Rosell has an agreement with Santos for Neymar; however, Santos has always denied this rumor. Don't be mistaken: Sandro Rosell has made it his number one priority to sign Neymar next summer. Even though Barça needs a true center-back more than Neymar, Rosell will not budge. It's either Neymar or nothing. I don't believe Rosell has made a deal with Santos. But it is very possible that Neymar's agent has talked to Rosell, and may have a gentleman's agreement about giving Barcelona the first shot at signing Neymar. While there will be other teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Chelsea looking to sign him. Would Neymar succeed in a more counter-attacking system? Yes. Would Neymar succeed in a system like Real Madrid's? Yes as well. Lionel Messi was Barcelona's goal maker and Robin Van Persie was Manchester United's goal taker as the star forwards shone in Champions League victories Tuesday. Messi created chances for Alexis Sanchez to score in the sixth minute and Cesc Fabregas in the 55th for a 2-0 win away to Benfica. Barcelona's comfortable night was tarnished late on as the four-time champion lost captain Carles Puyol who dislocated his left elbow after landing awkwardly. Midfielder Sergio Busquets was then shown a straight red card for lunging into challenges too aggressively. Van Persie scored with a fortunate finish in the 29th and a classy shot in the 49th, helping Man United come from behind to beat CFR Cluj 2-1 in Romania. "Wayne (Rooney) gave me the good pass, so I have to thank him," Van Persie said of his teammate's vision to create the winning goal. "Not many players can give a pass like that." This is the word from RVP.
Cesc Fabregas says he has no qualms about sacrificing his preferred position to Lionel Messi in the Barcelona line-up.

Check out each of the 11 players who made it into our final team in the link below! Although it's probably for the best if you don't play 'Spot the Real Madrid' player, as you're going to have a bad time...
Barcelona maintained its 100 percent start to the season as it defeated Getafe 4-1 at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. The Catalan giants labored during the early stages of the match but took a single-goal lead into the break through Adriano Correia. Second-half substitute Lionel Messi then netted a brace before a Javier Mascherano own goal robbed the visitors of a clean sheet, but David Villa rounded off the win. A number of injuries meant that Barcelona's attack had an almost second-string look to it, with Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Cristian Tello leading the line while Messi and Villa, who were lacking in fitness, started on the bench. The Blaugrana controlled possession throughout the first half but did not use the wings effectively enough. A number of times Tello wasted the ball as he tried to beat defenders, only to over-hit his touch and run it out of play. Therefore it was not until the 26th minute that Tito Vilanova's side eventually threatened the hosts' goal. Thiago Alcantara dribbled through the cent ...
Lionel Messi climbed off the bench to score twice while his fellow replacement David Villa was again on the mark as Barcelona continued their 100% start to the new Primera Division season with a 4-1 win at Getafe. Adriano capitalised on good work by Cesc Fabregas to notch a 32nd-minute opener before the visitors added three more goals in the final 16 minutes to seal their fourth win in four league outings. Messi doubled the lead from the penalty spot before the Argentina ace made it 3-0 four minutes later. Getafe pulled a goal back through Pablo Sarabia's deflected strike but Villa had the final word with a brilliant piece of finishing in stoppage time to complete the scoring. Getafe had beaten defending champions Real Madrid in their last home match but Barca rarely looked like suffering a similar fate. They had already seen Cristian Tello denied by home goalkeeper Miguel Moya and Thiago Alcantara strike the crossbar when they took the lead through Adriano. Fabregas created the chance with an incisive ru ...
Have you voted in our poll on whether Cesc Fabregas' Barcelona career has been marred by Lionel Messi's influence yet??
1. Lionel Messi - Barcelona | Value: £105m The three-time Ballon d'Or winner is the world's most valuable footballer, and with good reason. Should, I repeat, should Barcelona decide to sell their star forward, expect the offers to be well north of £105m - but at current transfer rates, that's his value. 2. Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid | Value: £88m The only Real Madrid player in the top 10, and the current most expensive transfer in history. But the Portuguese star, once again, plays second fiddle to his Barcelona and Argentina rival. 3. Andres Iniesta - Barcelona | Value: £61.5m e third, and final, Spain player on the list - Andres Iniesta is the reigning Best Player in Europe, and at £61.5m his value reflects that. 4. Wayne Rooney - Manchester United | Value: £57m Sir Alex Ferguson's investment in an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney in 2004 has paid off, and the United striker is now the most valuable English player in football. 5. Cesc Fabregas - Barcelona | Value: £48.5m The former-Arsenal captain m ...

Yesterday, Ronaldo was humbled by Lionel Messi's Club Compatriots, as Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas both netted in to put their country Spain through to the finals of the Euro 2012 tournament. Watch out for Germany vs Italy today @ 7:45pm. Explosive I'd guess
Summary There cannot have been many more nights more dramatic nor heroic in the history of Chelsea Football Club. Having gone 2-0 behind on the night and one man down in the first half, we scored in stoppage time at the end of each half. John Terry was the man sent off. Ramires was the first Chelsea scorer with a brilliant goal before Lionel Messi missed the chance to put his side 3-1 ahead when he wasted a penalty. With the pressure on, substitute Fernando Torres scored a late, late goal on the counter-attack from his own half. The only disappointment on a joyous night is that Ramires, Branislav Ivanovic and Raul Meireles were all booked and so will join the skipper in missing the Final. Team news Didier Drogba was passed fit soRoberto Di Matteo named the same side as the first leg. Barcelona did change however, bringing in Gerard Pique and going tothree at the back. Both full-backs at the Bridge were on the bench with Issac Cuenca coming in and playing wide on the right with Cesc Fabregas on the left. T ...
