![]() Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, works by helping to form and maintain collagen. Collagen is a protein that enhances the body's ability to absorb iron. It has many benefits, supports a variety of the body's structures and is essential to the formation of bones and teeth. Humans, unlike most other animals, do not create their own vitamin C, and they need to consume it through foods rich in the vitamin. How Much Vitamin C Do You Need? The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is sometimes referred to as the daily allowance or daily value, is 60-95 mg per day. The Food Standards Agency of the UK only recommends 40 mg. ![]() Today in White History! On this day in 1953, Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Frances H.C. Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes. Though DNA--short for deoxyribonucleic acid--was discovered in 1869, its crucial role in determining genetic inheritance wasn't demonstrated until 1943. In the early 1950s, Watson and Crick were only two of many scientists working on figuring out the structure of DNA. California chemist Linus Pauling suggested an incorrect model at the beginning of 1953, prompting Watson and Crick to try and beat Pauling at his own game. On the morning of February 28, they determined that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, or a spiral of two DNA strands, each containing a long chain of monomer nucleotides, wound around each other. According to their findings, DNA replicated itself by separating into individual strands, each of which became the template for a new double helix. In his best-s ...

![]() Vitamin C was isolated from lemons in 1932, the discovery of its link to scurvy. It was first written about circa 1500 B.C. and described by Aristotle in 450 B.C. as a syndrome characterized by lack of energy, tooth decay, gum inflammation, and bleeding problems. A high percentages of sailors with the British navy and other fleets have died from scurvy until James Lind discovered that the juice of lemons could cure and also prevent the disease. The ships then routinely carried limes for the sailors to consume daily, and thus these sailors became known as 'limeys." The Great Scientists The works of the great scientists like Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Dr. Linus Pauling, Dr. Matthias Rath, Dr. Irvin Stone, Dr. Frederick Robert Klenner, Dr. Robert F. Pictures by Sayantan Ghosh A Calcutta girl who fled marriage at 17 is back home three decades later as a millionaire American entrepreneur with a master’s in molecular biology and a Nobel Laureate as mentor on her CV. Chanda Zaveri’s extraordinary story would have been just another dream dashed had she stepped out of her Kankurgachhi home in a trousseau back in 1984 rather than sneak out to a life of challenges. So determined was Chanda, now 49, not to end up like “most Marwari girls of my age” that she chose to trust a tourist couple whom she had met on Park Street instead of family members who thought marriage was best for her. A teenaged Chanda soon landed in the US with the American couple’s support, worked as a maid, impressed her employer enough to get a study sponsorship and then walked into a lab at Caltech one day to tell two-time Nobel winner Linus Pauling that she would work under him! In 1984, 17-year-old Chanda Zaveri met a couple on Park Street in Calcutta who offered her a different fate from "most Marwari girls" of her age, according to India's Telegraph newspaper. If Zaveri found herself in Boston, they said, she would have their help. "I had no money, just a pair of diamond earrings," said Zaveri, whose parents had arranged her marriage. "I sold it, got myself tickets on British Airways and landed in Boston." There, she took various jobs as a maid for elderly homeowners. One employer was impressed enough to give Zaveri a huge gift: $30,000 to go to Harvard, where she completed the two units necessary to pursue a master’s degree. Next, she headed to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to begin biochemistry research under visiting professor Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist. She dreamed of working in his lab, but the professor didn't have much available. "I ...
![]() Do You Know ...How These Names Came About!! (Part 2) LG - combination of two popular Korean brands Lucky and Goldstar. Linux - Linus Torvalds originally used the Minix OS on his system which he replaced by his OS. Hence the workingname was Linux (Linus' Minix). He thought the name to be too egotistical and planned to name it Freax(free freak x). His friend Ari Lemmke encouraged Linus to upload it to a network so it could be easily downloaded. Ari gave Linus a directory called linux on his FTP server, as he did not like the name Freax. ![]() Diborane story Just as with ferrocene, 1 the formula first written for diborane B2H6 was orthodox, in conformity with the usual paradigmatic rules regarding molecular structure. And it was wrong. Correcting the mistake showed an extremely unusual bonding picture for the molecule. Just as in the ferrocene case, it opened up a whole new chapter of chemistry, later recognized with the award of a Nobel Prize to William N. Lipscomb in 1976 for "his studies on the structure of boranes illuminating problems of Chemical Bonding." I shall highlight here only a few episodes from the diborane story. In 1937, a former student of Linus Pauling, Simon H. Bauer - incidentally he is still active in research at Cornell, at the age of 88 - applied the technique of electron diffraction, a tool which he had learned to use at Caltech with Pauling, to diborane. He found and he reported a structure analogous to that of ethane, which therefore he wrote as H3B-BH3. 2 In 1942, Bauer reiterated his contention of the ethane-like str ...
![]() The Nobel Prize winning scientist Linus Pauling aptly described science as the search for truth. Science does this by continuously comparing its theories objectively with evidence in the natural world. When theories no longer conform to the evidence, they are modified or rejected in favor of new theories that do conform. In other words, science constantly tries to prove its assumptions to be false and rejects implausible explanations. In this way, scientific knowledge and understanding grow over time. Religious explanations for the order of things are not science because they are based primarily on faith and do not subject themselves to be objectively falsified. Because of this fundamental difference in the approach to understanding our natural world, the U.S. Supreme Court in effect decided in 1987 that the Biblically based "creation science" is not a science and cannot be taught as such in public schools as an alternative or in addition to the mainstream evolutionary theory of the biological scien ...

![]() Myth: Vitamin C is a cold fighter In the 1970s, Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling popularized the idea that vitamin C could prevent colds. Today, drugstores are full of vitamin C–based remedies. Studies say: Buyer, beware. In 2007, researchers analyzed a raft of studies going back several decades and involving more than 11,000 subjects to arrive at a disappointing conclusion: Vitamin C didn’t ward off colds, except among marathoners, skiers, and soldiers on subarctic exercises. Of course, prevention isn’t the only game in town. Can the vitamin cut the length of colds? Yes and no. Taking the vitamin daily does seem to reduce the time you’ll spend sniffling—but not enough to notice. Adults typically have cold symptoms for 12 days a year; a daily pill could cut that to 11 days. Kids might go from 28 days of runny noses to 24 per year. The researchers conclude that minor reductions like these don’t justify the expense and bother of year-round pill-popping (taking C only after symptoms crop up doesn’t ...

He was one of the most influential chemists in history and ranks among the most important scientists of the 20th century. Pauling was among the first scientists to work in the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology. Pauling is one of only four individuals to have won more than one Nobel Prize. He is one of only two people awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields (the Chemistry and Peace prizes), the other being Marie Curie (the Chemistry and Physics prizes), and the only person awarded two unshared prizes. Anyway, Pauling stated that, "One could trace EVERY disease and EVERY ailment to a mineral deficiency."
