Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, works by helping to form and maintain collagen. Collagen is a protein that enhances the body's ability to absorb iron. It has many benefits, supports a variety of the body's structures and is essential to the formation of bones and teeth. Humans, unlike most other animals, do not create their own vitamin C, and they need to consume it through foods rich in the vitamin. How Much Vitamin C Do You Need? The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is sometimes referred to as the daily allowance or daily value, is 60-95 mg per day. The Food Standards Agency of the UK only recommends 40 mg. However, these dosage recommendations are hotly contested among scientists, some of whom who, like Linus Pauling, recommend upward to 18,000 mg per day! Today in White History! On this day in 1953, Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Frances H.C. Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes. Though DNA--short for deoxyribonucleic acid--was discovered in 1869, its crucial role in determining genetic inheritance wasn't demonstrated until 1943. In the early 1950s, Watson and Crick were only two of many scientists working on figuring out the structure of DNA. California chemist Linus Pauling suggested an incorrect model at the beginning of 1953, prompting Watson and Crick to try and beat Pauling at his own game. On the morning of February 28, they determined that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, or a spiral of two DNA strands, each containing a long chain of monomer nucleotides, wound around each other. According to their findings, DNA replicated itself by separating into individual strands, each of which became the template for a new double helix. In his best-s ...
"When an old and distinguished person speaks to you, listen to him carefully and with respect — but do not believe him. Never put your trust into anything but your own intellect. Your elder, no matter whether he has gray hair or has lost his hair, no matter whether he is a Nobel Laureate — may be wrong. The world progresses, year by year, century by century, as the members of the younger generation find out what was wrong among the things that their elders said. So you must always be skeptical — always think for yourself." -- Linus Pauling

Vitamin C was isolated from lemons in 1932, the discovery of its link to scurvy. It was first written about circa 1500 B.C. and described by Aristotle in 450 B.C. as a syndrome characterized by lack of energy, tooth decay, gum inflammation, and bleeding problems. A high percentages of sailors with the British navy and other fleets have died from scurvy until James Lind discovered that the juice of lemons could cure and also prevent the disease. The ships then routinely carried limes for the sailors to consume daily, and thus these sailors became known as 'limeys." The Great Scientists The works of the great scientists like Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Dr. Linus Pauling, Dr. Matthias Rath, Dr. Irvin Stone, Dr. Frederick Robert Klenner, Dr. Robert F. Cathcart, made the world recognize the real value of Vitamin C in the pursuit of health. Chanda Zaveri at her Salt Lake home, which she visits in winter every year. Pictures by Sayantan Ghosh A Calcutta girl who fled marriage at 17 is back home three decades later as a millionaire American entrepreneur with a master’s in molecular biology and a Nobel Laureate as mentor on her CV. Chanda Zaveri’s extraordinary story would have been just another dream dashed had she stepped out of her Kankurgachhi home in a trousseau back in 1984 rather than sneak out to a life of challenges. So determined was Chanda, now 49, not to end up like “most Marwari girls of my age” that she chose to trust a tourist couple whom she had met on Park Street instead of family members who thought marriage was best for her. A teenaged Chanda soon landed in the US with the American couple’s support, worked as a maid, impressed her employer enough to get a study sponsorship and then walked into a lab at Caltech one day to tell two-time Nobel winner Linus Pauling that she would work under him! In town this winter, lik ...

By 1949, Alvin Weinberg, another early ORNL pioneer, could definitively say that neutron diffraction “has become an extraordinarily powerful tool for the investigation of the structure of hydrogen-containing crystals.” With remarkable prescience, Weinberg went on: “The use of neutron diffraction for the systematic study of crystals and molecular structure is apt to remain a most important basic scientific function of the national laboratories.” None of the early pioneers could have anticipated the profound impact of neutron diffraction studies. Measurements first with powder samples and subsequently with single crystals established that the crystal structure of ice obeyed the rules proposed earlier by the American chemist Linus Pauling and definitively ruled out several competing theories. An Indian girl who took a blind leap to escape an arranged marriage has returned home a millionaire. In 1984, 17-year-old Chanda Zaveri met a couple on Park Street in Calcutta who offered her a different fate from "most Marwari girls" of her age, according to India's Telegraph newspaper. If Zaveri found herself in Boston, they said, she would have their help. "I had no money, just a pair of diamond earrings," said Zaveri, whose parents had arranged her marriage. "I sold it, got myself tickets on British Airways and landed in Boston." There, she took various jobs as a maid for elderly homeowners. One employer was impressed enough to give Zaveri a huge gift: $30,000 to go to Harvard, where she completed the two units necessary to pursue a master’s degree. Next, she headed to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to begin biochemistry research under visiting professor Linus Pauling, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist. She dreamed of working in his lab, but the professor didn't have much available. "I ...
Do You Know ...How These Names Came About!! (Part 2) LG - combination of two popular Korean brands Lucky and Goldstar. Linux - Linus Torvalds originally used the Minix OS on his system which he replaced by his OS. Hence the workingname was Linux (Linus' Minix). He thought the name to be too egotistical and planned to name it Freax(free freak x). His friend Ari Lemmke encouraged Linus to upload it to a network so it could be easily downloaded. Ari gave Linus a directory called linux on his FTP server, as he did not like the name Freax. (Linus' parents named him after two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling) Lotus (Notes) - Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from 'The Lotus Position' or 'Padmasana'. Kapor used to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Microsoft - coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' was removed later on. Mozilla - When Marc Andreesen, founder of Netscape, c ...
Diborane story Just as with ferrocene, 1 the formula first written for diborane B2H6 was orthodox, in conformity with the usual paradigmatic rules regarding molecular structure. And it was wrong. Correcting the mistake showed an extremely unusual bonding picture for the molecule. Just as in the ferrocene case, it opened up a whole new chapter of chemistry, later recognized with the award of a Nobel Prize to William N. Lipscomb in 1976 for "his studies on the structure of boranes illuminating problems of Chemical Bonding." I shall highlight here only a few episodes from the diborane story. In 1937, a former student of Linus Pauling, Simon H. Bauer - incidentally he is still active in research at Cornell, at the age of 88 - applied the technique of electron diffraction, a tool which he had learned to use at Caltech with Pauling, to diborane. He found and he reported a structure analogous to that of ethane, which therefore he wrote as H3B-BH3. 2 In 1942, Bauer reiterated his contention of the ethane-like str ...
The Nobel Prize winning scientist Linus Pauling aptly described science as the search for truth. Science does this by continuously comparing its theories objectively with evidence in the natural world. When theories no longer conform to the evidence, they are modified or rejected in favor of new theories that do conform. In other words, science constantly tries to prove its assumptions to be false and rejects implausible explanations. In this way, scientific knowledge and understanding grow over time. Religious explanations for the order of things are not science because they are based primarily on faith and do not subject themselves to be objectively falsified. Because of this fundamental difference in the approach to understanding our natural world, the U.S. Supreme Court in effect decided in 1987 that the Biblically based "creation science" is not a science and cannot be taught as such in public schools as an alternative or in addition to the mainstream evolutionary theory of the biological scien ...

It has been determined that water has a memory. Thus, water has an ability to store and share information, both healthy and unhealthy. According to the physicist Dr. Wolfgang Ludwig, even when water has been purified, it can still contain electromagnetic frequencies from poisonous substances. The theory of Water Memory Transfer was established by the late Linus Pauling, who won the Nobel Prize for Biochemistry. In 1999 scientists at the European Union Physics lab in France were able to prove that water transfers memory via covalent bonding.

Information About Kiwi Oil Kiwi oil is extracted from the seeds of the kiwi fruit, which grow on trees that are native to many parts of the world, including North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. To make kiwi oil, manufacturers crush fresh kiwi seeds and separate the liquid contents from the solid contents until enough oil is extracted for use. Kiwi oil can then be used as an oral nutritional supplement in capsule form, or as a topical cream for its skin benefits. As with all nutritional supplements and topical creams, consult your doctor before using kiwi seed oil. Fatty Acids Kiwi seed oil is a good source of fatty acids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to ScientistLive.com. Kiwi seed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, which has many nutritional benefits. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ALA has been implicated in the treatment of heart disease, high cholesterol and blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, breast cancer, depression and menstrual p ...

"How can a young person be happy? I think a good way of increasing the probability of leading a happy life is to do two things. First, to think about what you'd like to do, whoever you are, what you like to do, and then see if you can make your living doing it. Second, look around, keeping your eyes open and your brain working and find somebody of the opposite sex with whom you enjoy talking and with whom you can get along. Get married young and stay married. So, those are the two ways in which I believe young people can be doing something wise to determine, to some extent at any rate, the nature of their future lives." This is the Wikkepedia write up on Eugenics. Any names stand out for you? "The modern field and term were first formulated by Sir Francis Galton in 1883, drawing on the recent work of his half-cousin Charles Darwin. At its peak of popularity eugenics was supported by a wide variety of prominent people, including Winston Churchill, Margaret Sanger, Marie Stopes, H. G. Wells, Theodore Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, John Maynard Keynes, John Harvey Kellogg, Linus Pauling and Sidney Webb. Many members of the American Progressive Movement supported eugenics, seduced by its scientific trappings and its promise of a quick end to social ills. Its most infamous proponent and practitioner was, however, Adolf Hitler who praised and incorporated eugenic ideas in Mein Kampf and emulated Eugenic legislation for the sterilization of "defectives" that had been pioneered in the United States."

Linus Torvalds is the world's most famous computer programmer and also its second most famous Finn, after Sibelius. He is the founder and coordinator of GNU/Linux Kernel, the Unix-like operating system that is beginning to revolutionize the computer industry and possibly much else as well. His is truly one of the great tales in the history of the computers. Early Years Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969 in Helsinki, the capital and largest city in Finland. He was named after Linus Pauling, the famous physical chemist and Nobel Prize winner. The Torvalds family belongs to the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, which numbers about 300,000 in a total population of roughly five million. Many members of the family were journalists. His parents, Nils and Anna Torvalds, were both radicals at the University of Helsinki during the 1960s. His father was a Communist who spent a year studying in Moscow in the mid-1970s and later became a radio journalist. His mother worked for a Finnish newspape ...
Myth: Vitamin C is a cold fighter In the 1970s, Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling popularized the idea that vitamin C could prevent colds. Today, drugstores are full of vitamin C–based remedies. Studies say: Buyer, beware. In 2007, researchers analyzed a raft of studies going back several decades and involving more than 11,000 subjects to arrive at a disappointing conclusion: Vitamin C didn’t ward off colds, except among marathoners, skiers, and soldiers on subarctic exercises. Of course, prevention isn’t the only game in town. Can the vitamin cut the length of colds? Yes and no. Taking the vitamin daily does seem to reduce the time you’ll spend sniffling—but not enough to notice. Adults typically have cold symptoms for 12 days a year; a daily pill could cut that to 11 days. Kids might go from 28 days of runny noses to 24 per year. The researchers conclude that minor reductions like these don’t justify the expense and bother of year-round pill-popping (taking C only after symptoms crop up doesn’t ...
Animal testing is not predictive for humans, so most cancer research -- which uses animals -- is fraudulent, a waste of money and time and life. Cancer has been cured in mice, and this does nothing to help cure cancer in humans. What would cure cancer in humans is for them to stop smoking and eating animal products -- but proper nutrition is not taught to most medical doctors.

Ensuring children establish healthy lifestyles is an uphill battle for parents. Dr. Tina Matthews, a Bronze Director from Toronto, Ontario, says, “The importance of healthy habits for children is a more pressing issue today than it was when the parents of today’s children were children.” One of the best ways to ensure children—and adults—get the nutrients they need is to add supplements to their diet. Dr. Linus Pauling was an American chemist, biochemist, peace activist, author, and educator. He was one of the most influential chemists in history and ranks among the most important scientists of the 20th century. Pauling was among the first scientists to work in the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology. Pauling is one of only four individuals to have won more than one Nobel Prize. He is one of only two people awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields (the Chemistry and Peace prizes), the other being Marie Curie (the Chemistry and Physics prizes), and the only person awarded two unshared prizes. Anyway, Pauling stated that, "One could trace EVERY disease and EVERY ailment to a mineral deficiency."

Vitamin C has been in the public eye for a long time. Even before its discovery in 1932, nutrition experts recognized that something in citrus fruits could prevent scurvy, a disease that killed as many as two million sailors between 1500 and 1800. (1) In the 1970s, Chemistry and Peace Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling promoted daily megadoses of vitamin C (the amount in 12 to 24 oranges) as a way to prevent colds and some chronic diseases.
