Leonid Brezhnev

Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev (19 December 1906 (O.S. 6 December) – 10 November 1982) was the General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), presiding over the country from 1964 until his death in 1982. His eighteen-year term as General Secretary was second only to that of Joseph Stalin in length.

Everyone seems to be making a big deal about Sony pulling the release of the film "The Interview" from theaters all over the country, due to growing concerns about threats from North Korea, terrorist organizations, etc. Most of the articles I've seen have focused on the aspect of "letting censorship win," or a theme along that line. But let's be honest for a minute here. Who seriously thought that a movie about assassinating our country's (arguably biggest) living enemy leader would be a good idea? And who thought it would be a good idea to make that movie a comedy? Imagine if during the Cold War someone had attempted to release a comedy about the assassination of Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev or Mikhail Gorbachev. How well do you think that would have gone over?

A brief history lesson is in order here. Back in 1979, when the Communist Soviet Union still existed, Chess Master Zbigniew Brzezinski also sacrificed a piece; the nation of Afghanistan. Through intrigue and murder, a CIA backed faction replaced a Soviet friendly Communist government with an America-friendly "Communist-light" government. After having previously refused Afghan requests for military intervention against the CIA backed "rebels", Chess novice Leonid Brezhnev sent the Red Army into Afghanistan, in December of 1979.

Obama doesn't seem to understand Putin I recall being an undergraduate in Russian Studies at Amherst College when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. I was flabbergasted when then-President Carter initially expressed surprise that Leonid Brezhnev and his cronies decided to undertake that ill-fated adventure. Just the little I knew of Soviet history at that time led me to conclude that one should never be naïve about Russia. Wisely, the Carter administration soon implemented a wide-ranging and powerful set of sanctions against the USSR. By comparison, Barack Obama is now making Jimmy Carter look like Attila the Hun with a series of empty threats and "too little, too late" punitive measures against Putin's Russia. On February 28, President Obama warned Russia not to take military action against Crimea, and if he did so, serious "costs" would be imposed. A few weeks later, Crimea was annexed to Russia and virtually no serious "costs" have been incurred from U.S. sanctions. Now Obama and o ...

Mar 21, 1980: Carter announces Olympic boycott On this day in 1980, President Jimmy Carter announces that the U.S. will boycott the Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Moscow that summer. The announcement came after the Soviet Union failed to comply with Carter's February 20, 1980, deadline to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. The Soviet military invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to reinforce the country's communist regime against Islamic rebel forces. In a statement made after the invasion, Carter rebuked the Soviet Union, specifically Premier Leonid Brezhnev, and decried the invasion as a deliberate effort by a powerful atheistic government to subjugate an independent Islamic people that he called a stepping stone to [Soviet] control over [Afghanistan's] oil supplies." Brezhnev dismissed Carter's statements as bellicose and wicked. The invasion threatened to revive the Cold War, which, during the late 1970s, had appeared to undergo a temporary thaw. Carter said his opinion of the Russians has changed ...
On this day in History, March 21 ... The Napoleonic Code is approved in France on this day in 1804. After four years of debate and planning, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte enacts a new legal framework for France, known as the "Napoleonic Code." The civil code gave post-revolutionary France its first coherent set of laws concerning property, colonial affairs, the family, and individual rights. In 1800, General Napoleon Bonaparte, as the new dictator of France, began the arduous task of revising France's outdated and muddled legal system. He established a special commission, led by J.J. Cambaceres, which met more than 80 times to discuss the revolutionary legal revisions, and Napoleon presided over nearly half of these sessions. In March 1804, the Napoleonic Code was finally approved. --- On this day in 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley begins his famous search through Africa for the missing British explorer Dr. David Livingstone. Man, I'm reading Ben's "Rolling Stone" and see something interesting... Not what you'd think... They actually do investigative journalism, practically a lost art these days. So in their review of the TV show "The Americans," they report on the 1983 G7 Summit while the Cold War was still going on. The "two gents entrusted with the nuclear launch codes" were Ronald Reagan and Leonid Brezhnev. Brezhnev was seventy something "boozing his way to his next (fatal) stroke." Reagan didn't read his briefing materials, explaining that "The Sound of Music" had been on the night before. I say, "Heavenly Father, how did we get through that time period?"

Today in History: January 2nd. On this day in 1980, in a strong reaction to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty and recalls the U.S. ambassador to Moscow. These actions sent a message that the age of detente and the friendlier diplomatic and economic relations that were established between the United States and Soviet Union during President Richard Nixon's administration (1969-74) had ended. Carter feared that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, in which an estimated 30,000 combat troops entered that nation and established a puppet government, would threaten the stability of strategic neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan and could lead to the USSR gaining control over much of the world's oil supplies. The Soviet actions were labeled "a serious threat to peace" by the White House. Carter asked the Senate to shelve ratification talks on SALT II, the nuclear arms treaty that he and Soviet ...

learn from history? The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen, mostly composed of two alliances - the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. ... The decade-long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on Dec. 24, 1979, under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on Feb. 15, 1989, under the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or the "Bear Trap"
Ukraine and the USSR Lenin's attempts to assuage Ukrainian nationalism through a measure of cultural autonomy were abandoned by Stalin, who also imposed agricultural collectivization on Ukraine and requisitioned all grain for export. Millions of Ukrainians died in the resulting famine. Mykola Skrypnyk and other Ukrainian Communist leaders who opposed Stalinist measures were purged and executed. During World War II, many Ukrainians at first welcomed the Germans as liberators and collaborated with them against the USSR. However, the Nazis' scorn for all Slavs and their harsh occupation (1941–44) of Ukraine turned many Ukrainians into anti-German guerrilla fighters. The republic suffered severe wartime devastation, esp. as a battleground both in 1941–42 (the German advance) and 1943–44 (the Russian advance). Most of Ukraine's 1.5 million Jews were killed by the Nazis during the war; many were shot outright in 1941, at such sites as Babi Yar (Ukr. Babyn Yar ), outside Kiev. The Mossad Did Its Part By Mr. Shabtai Shavit Chairman of the Board of Directors, The International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) and former Director of the Mossad First published in Hebrew by Haaretz It I returned from a trip abroad and read the numerous articles in Haaretz and Yediot Aharonot concerning the recent publication of testimonies made to the Agranat Commission that had been assigned by the Israeli government to inquire the Yom - Kippur war (1973). After 40 years of silence, I have finally decided to address the matter and share my own take on what occurred. The reader will judge for himself how far commentators, in their tendentious use of the testimonies, have strayed from the reality of what happened. They have allowed themselves, without a moment’s hesitation, to quote half a sentence from a main headline and fill in the rest with personal commentary, as if the second half of the sentence, which stands in complete contrast to their commentary, did not exist. The public in general ...

Your BirthdayScope for Thurs. Dec. 19: Happy Birthday, Sagittarius! You don’t expect an easy life and you certainly don’t count on others to make unusual sacrifices for you. In fact, you can’t bear to feel in others’ debt - or under anyone’s thumb. You’d much rather build a life for yourself, pay your own dues, and prove your own worth than cling to another’s coattails. No matter how artistic or idealistic you are, you’re a tough-minded pragmatist at heart. You have no interest in building castles in the air – unless, of course you’ve got loads of free time and a fat saving account. You need to build a dependable, secure life for yourself. You are, after all, a freedom thirsty Sagittarian. You know that almost every good deed creates expectations and obligations, so you’d just as soon take care of yourself. Although man ...

Today is the birthday of Leonid Brezhnev.
All Commie haters should always note this that Communists saved Goa attack from NATO forces. The USSR had earlier vetoed a UN security council resolution condemning the Indian invasion of Goa. The head of state of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, who was touring India at the time of the war in 1961, made several speeches applauding the Indian action. In a farewell message, he urged Indians to ignore Western indignation as it came "from those who are accustomed to strangle the peoples striving for independence... and from those who enrich themselves from colonialist plunder". Nikita Khrushchev, the de facto Soviet leader, telegraphed Nehru stating that there was "unanimous acclaim" from every Soviet citizen for "Friendly India".
China - reforms - an excellent analysis published by ISN/ETH Zurich Soaring Dragon, Stumbling Bear: China’s Rise in a Comparative Context As a form of government, is China’s authoritarian capitalism more stable and predictable than democracy? That’s a dubious question, say Mark Harrison and Debin Ma. Beijing’s current political system has thrived in exceptional circumstances and can’t be instantly duplicated elsewhere. Introduction We are currently witnessing a historic reversal. For the first time in centuries, the real income of the average Chinese citizen is overtaking and, on some authoritative measures, has already exceeded that of those now living in the former Soviet Union. Soviet rulers from Joseph Stalin to Nikita Khrushchev to Leonid Brezhnev could once afford to patronize, and even despise, their Chinese comrades. In past times China respectfully saluted the Soviet Union as the ‘elder brother’ to be emulated. As late as in 1989, on a visit to China to mark the normalization of S ...
When Leonid Brezhnev, the country was fine, nice and rich, people are kind and friendly, the people of the country were the world's great! Under Putin, the impoverished country, the oligarchs got rich, ordinary people poorer, prices rose, revenues fell, Russian and brutalized ofashistilis, people have become strangers to each other and evil.
Modi’s obsession and the future of Indian state November 17, 2013: BJP feels it has done an effective cover up job by producing from nowhere someone calling himself Pranlal Soni, supposedly a resident of Kutch claiming that “Madhuri” is his daughter and he had asked family friend Narendra Modi to keep a watchful eye on his daughter in the big bad Ahmedabad. Great, what a caring and responsible “uncle” the aspiring prime minister of India has proved to be! Who wouldn’t want such a man to head the nation? He will then take care of all little girls keeping a watchful eye on every young woman, lest she goes astray and strikes a friendship with an undesirable boyfriend and causes heartburns to her parents and the state. And how do we know this “uncle” did not have an eye for the young woman? No we don’t. On the contrary the minute to minute reporting on the movements of the girl by the elite Anti Terrorist Squad of Gujarat Police suggests that the chief minister was obsessed with this girl. P ...
So does the USA . Russia allegedly maintains a vast, secretive underground complex. Since the mid-'90s, some sources have alleged that Russia is building (or has completed) a huge military complex popularly dubbed the Yamantau Complex. The structure, under Yamantau Mountain in the Urals, was started by Leonid Brezhnev, and its function is something of a mystery. When asked, Russian officials have variously described the project as a bunker, a mining site, a nuclear dump, or a storage area; others have simply declined to comment.

The Triumph of an Underground Man - Rachel Polonsky The Bridge Over the Neroch and Other Works by Leonid Tsypkin, translated from the Russian by Jamey Gambrell Leonid Tsypkin was the authentic underground man of the Soviet “era of stagnation,” leading a hidden life as a writer during Leonid Brezhnev’s years as Party leader. Ronald Reagan retold this story (told to him by Mikhail Gorbachev). Leonid Brezhnev was the son of poor peasants who had risen to become Soviet Party Chairman. Proud of his new station with the trappings of power that would have pleased a Czar, he brought his aged mother in a huge limousine from her village to the Kremlin and showed her his lavish apartment. Afterward he had the limo take them to his country place in the woods outside Moscow. Following that, they took a train to the Crimea, where Mr. Brezhnev had a marble palace on the beach. Astounded, his mother whispered in his ear, " Leonid, but what if the Communists fine out? "
Ok, it's been going around the internet, and I've been picked by my friend Dorothy Lemoult, so here it goes: 10 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME. 1. I was named for famed British actor Christopher Lee. My grandfather got into a bar fight with him while he was stationed in England prior to D-Day in WWII. After the brawl they bought each other drinks and became lifelong friends. 2. When I was a boy I had a pet albino ocelot named "Ozzy." 3. During middle school I was seriously addicted to spray paint. I had a can a day habit, but only did the silver stuff. 4. I once made an entire suit of armor from roofing shingles. 5. When I was in 2nd grade I made a construction paper "Pop-up Book for Piece"(sic) and sent it to Russian Premier Leonid Brezhnev. He responded with a warm letter praising both my talent and class consciousness. 6. I once ate three live baby squirrels on a dare. 7. My aunt is famed choreographer Twyla Tharp. In fact, I lost my virginity to one of her principal dancers while hanging out ...
The Rights of Homosexuals under Stalin and his successors.- by ADRIEN ALPENDRE, Esq. In 1933, Article 121 was added to the criminal code for the entire Soviet Union, that expressly prohibited male homosexuality, with up to five years of hard labor in prison. There were no criminal statutes regarding lesbianism. During the Soviet regime, Western observers believed that between 800 to 1,000 men were imprisoned each year under Article 121. The precise reason for the new law is still in some dispute. Some historians have suggested that Joseph Stalin's enactment of the anti *** law was, like his prohibition on abortion, an attempt to increase the Russian birthrate and build a better relationship with the socially conservative Russian Orthodox Church. Some historians have noted that it was during this time that Soviet propaganda began to depict homosexuality as a sign of fascism, and that Article 121 may have been a simple political tool to use against dissidents, irrespective of their true sexual orientation, ...
INS Vikramaditya: Same name, multiple frames - India Today Spot the difference: (from top to bottom) the Kuznetsov, Liaoning, Vikramaditya. Photo: Sandeep Unnithan. In the 1960s, Admiral Sergey Gorshkov, the father of the modern Soviet navy, envisaged a fleet of aircraft carriers that could be deployed across the globe to challenge NATO. His dream has finally taken steam nearly a half-century later, but in a manner even the farsighted naval genius would not have suspected. As Elizabeth Antony cracks a coconut to commision the 44,500 tonne INS Vikramaditya in Severodvinsk, Russia, the Indian navy gets its largest warship. The commissioning of the Vikramaditya in Russia's Arctic shipyard makes India only the third country in the world after the US and Italy to operate more than one carrier. It will also be a second life for a warship which began life as a Soviet aircraft carrying cruiser the 'Baku' in 1987. The Vikramaditya has a lot in common with China's first aircraft carrier the Liaoning, that was commi ...
But something strange happened in Russia. Things did not go according to plan. There, Stalin had empowered Russian nationalism to some extent in order to win the war. And he did not trust the Jewish power structure, even though it was they who had created the Communist revolution to begin with. So he continued to empower Russians and disempower Jews after the war, a policy which his successors continued, vigorously. Russia did not open its borders to non-Whites, and neither did any of its satellite nations. Russia did not permit perverse and racially-destructive media and “education” to influence its young people. It reached the point in the 1980s when Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, would say to Margaret Thatcher at a European summit, “We are today deciding the future of the White race.” After the fall of Communism, this legacy is still in place. Russia and its allies are the only White nations on Earth with governments not dedicated to the extermination of their own people. Just mon ...
RUSSIANS NAME BREZHNEV BEST 20TH-CENTURY LEADER, GORBACHEV WORST. Over half of Russians believe Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was the best head of state in the past century, followed by Bolshevik Revolution mastermind Vladimir Lenin and dictator Joseph Stalin, a poll by Levada Center has revealed. Sociologists asked Russians about their attitude towards 20th-century leaders. Some 56 percent of respondents have positive feelings about Brezhnev, who led the USSR from 1964 till 1982. A target of countless Soviet jokes and anecdotes, he is now disliked by 29 percent of people, Levada revealed. The first ruler of the Soviet Union, Lenin, is seen in a good light by 55 percent of Russians, while exactly one-half of Russians favor Stalin. However, over one-third of respondents do not approve of the leader, who is often described as “bloody tyrant.” Nikita Khruschev – who was Soviet premier during the Cuban missile crisis – is liked by 45 percent of Russians. That figure is slightly less than modern-day su ...

Fun to see this in the weekend Wall Street Journal: Martin Cruz Smith on Russian humorists: Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol 1. It's tempting to call Nikolai Gogol, author of "Dead Souls," the father of Russian satire. It might be more accurate to say, as he did, that "the comic is hidden everywhere, only living in the midst of it, we are not conscious of it." "Dead Souls" is the story of a certain Chichikov, a grifter who ventures into the Russian countryside with a scheme to buy tax credits for dead serfs. With a genius for description Gogol follows this Mr. Nobody, who is "not handsome, not ill-favored, not over-fat, and not over-thin" as he insinuates his way from fool to fool among the provincial gentry of czarist Russia. Gogol was done in by contradictions. In "Dead Souls" he wrote a sumptuous dining table scene "laden with sturgeon, caviar, salmon, herrings, cheese, smoked tongue, fresh roe"—86 kinds of food in all. Later, in a bout of religious asceticism, he would starve himself to death. Scenes Fro ...
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY: November 10, 1982 Vice President George Bush visits Cape Verde, Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Zaire and Kenya to discuss Namibian independence and U.S. policy in Africa. He attends the funeral of Leonid Brezhnev and meets with General Secretary Yuri Andropov in the USSR.
"Ostensibly, the Democrats and their henchmen interpret equality under the law to mean everybody is the same rather than we are all equally important in the eyes of God and under the law. This allows Obama to recreate the dictatorship of the proletariat to take things away from productive people so he can give it to a growing number of supporters who are already dependent on welfare. This present is gift-wrapped in the false promise of improving their lives. The funny thing is it never gets "there." Seventy years of that high minded " thinking" in Russia created only misery and poverty for her people along with a fantastic foreign car collection for Leonid Brezhnev." Henry Meers

Today is Tuesday, June 18, 2013. This is the 169th day of the year, with 196 days remaining in 2013. Fact of the Day: War of 1812 "The War of 1812 was fought between the U.S. and Great Britain from 1812-14, though some fighting continued after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in December of 1814. Most of the fighting took place along the Canadian border, in Chesapeake Bay, and along the Gulf of Mexico. After the American Revolution, the U.S. was anxious for the British to withdraw from American territory and their unwillingness to sign trade agreements with the U.S. The British were keeping the U.S. from trade with themselves and with France, with whom they were battling (French Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars). They captured U.S. ships and took hostages and goods and, by 1812, the British had blockaded America's coasts, ruining American trade and finances. So, the U.S. attacked the British colony of Canada. There was fighting on land and at sea - and though the Americans were not prepared at first, the ...

HISTORY TODAY. SALT II, TREATY SIGNED TODAY. SALT II was a series of talks between United States and Soviet negotiators from 1972 to 1979 which sought to curtail the manufacture of strategic nuclear weapons. It was a continuation of the SALT I talks and was led by representatives from both countries. SALT II was the first nuclear arms treaty which assumed real reductions in strategic forces to 2,250 of all categories of delivery vehicles on both sides. An agreement to limit strategic launchers was reached in Vienna on June 18, 1979, and was signed by Leonid Brezhnev and Jimmy Carter. In response to the refusal of the United States Senate to ratify the treaty, a junior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, met with the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrey Gromyko, "educated him about American concerns and interests" and secured several changes that neither the Secretary of State nor Carter could obtain. Six months after the signing, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanist ...
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 led to a hail of denunciation from both Western states and the Muslim world that came as a shock to Leonid Brezhnev and the other Soviet leaders locked away in the Kremlin. In the West, the invasion was condemned as an example of brutal Soviet imperialism, but the Kremlin genuinely considered it more a short-term police action designed to restore order among the battling Afghan communist factions that had seized Kabul in the coup of 1978. The Soviets also hoped to push Afghanistan on a more secular, progressive course, with improved educational facilities and greater freedom for women. Needless to say, these were ideas that found little support outside the metropolitan elites in Kabul, and the Soviets made matters worse with their heavy handed imposition of authority. The original Soviet time-frame for the operation was around six months, but the Red Army found itself embroiled in a bloody and fruitless war that would last for more than nine years. The U ...
Finally, my degree in Political Science from Indiana University is proving to be of some value. For years, I have joked that I had a degree in study of a country that no longer exists. I chose to study the Soviet Union. Why, you might ask, would I conclude that there is new value in my three years learning Russian history, Soviet theory, Marxism and the like? I am watching the news coverage of President Barack Obama and Russian Federation President f(or Life) Vlad Putin at the G8 conference. Hurray ! ~ A MODERATE Fascist , Misogynist, Homophobic, Anti West, Anti Christian, Anti Semite has been elected Puppet of the Ayatollahs and President of Iran. Public hangings from construction cranes, will now only be carried out on Mondays , Wednesdays and Thursdays. Women may now .umm nothing. His development of nuclear weapons to fire at Israel and Saudi Arabia will also be , moderate. This reminds me of how after the death of Stalin of the USSR he was followed by another quarter century of dictators like Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov etc.

To do this, the KGB "actively obtained information on military and strategic issues, and the aggressive military and political plans of imperialism [the United States] and its accomplices," and "enhanced the relevance and effectiveness of its active intelligence abilities." From the The National Security Archive. The greatest catalyst to the Able Archer war scare occurred more than two years earlier. In a May 1981 closed-session meeting of senior KGB officers and Soviet leaders, General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and KGB chairman Yuri Andropov bluntly announced that the United States was preparing a secret nuclear attack on the USSR. To combat this threat, Andropov announced, the KGB and GRU would begin Operation RYAN. RYAN (РЯН) was a Russian acronym for ...
Among the conspiracy theories were that the 27-year-old (pictured) was murdered on the orders of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev for an unspecified offence.
