A brief history lesson is in order here. Back in 1979, when the Communist Soviet Union still existed, Chess Master Zbigniew Brzezinski also sacrificed a piece; the nation of Afghanistan. Through intrigue and murder, a CIA backed faction replaced a Soviet friendly Communist government with an America-friendly "Communist-light" government. After having previously refused Afghan requests for military intervention against the CIA backed "rebels", Chess novice Leonid Brezhnev sent the Red Army into Afghanistan, in December of 1979.

Obama doesn't seem to understand Putin I recall being an undergraduate in Russian Studies at Amherst College when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. I was flabbergasted when then-President Carter initially expressed surprise that Leonid Brezhnev and his cronies decided to undertake that ill-fated adventure. Just the little I knew of Soviet history at that time led me to conclude that one should never be naïve about Russia. Wisely, the Carter administration soon implemented a wide-ranging and powerful set of sanctions against the USSR. By comparison, Barack Obama is now making Jimmy Carter look like Attila the Hun with a series of empty threats and "too little, too late" punitive measures against Putin's Russia. On February 28, President Obama warned Russia not to take military action against Crimea, and if he did so, serious "costs" would be imposed. A few weeks later, Crimea was annexed to Russia and virtually no serious "costs" have been incurred from U.S. sanctions. Now Obama and o ...

Mar 21, 1980: Carter announces Olympic boycott On this day in 1980, President Jimmy Carter announces that the U.S. will boycott the Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Moscow that summer. The announcement came after the Soviet Union failed to comply with Carter's February 20, 1980, deadline to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. The Soviet military invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to reinforce the country's communist regime against Islamic rebel forces. In a statement made after the invasion, Carter rebuked the Soviet Union, specifically Premier Leonid Brezhnev, and decried the invasion as a deliberate effort by a powerful atheistic government to subjugate an independent Islamic people that he called a stepping stone to [Soviet] control over [Afghanistan's] oil supplies." Brezhnev dismissed Carter's statements as bellicose and wicked. The invasion threatened to revive the Cold War, which, during the late 1970s, had appeared to undergo a temporary thaw. Carter said his opinion of the Russians has changed ...
On this day in History, March 21 ... The Napoleonic Code is approved in France on this day in 1804. After four years of debate and planning, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte enacts a new legal framework for France, known as the "Napoleonic Code." The civil code gave post-revolutionary France its first coherent set of laws concerning property, colonial affairs, the family, and individual rights. In 1800, General Napoleon Bonaparte, as the new dictator of France, began the arduous task of revising France's outdated and muddled legal system. He established a special commission, led by J.J. Cambaceres, which met more than 80 times to discuss the revolutionary legal revisions, and Napoleon presided over nearly half of these sessions. In March 1804, the Napoleonic Code was finally approved. --- On this day in 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley begins his famous search through Africa for the missing British explorer Dr. David Livingstone. Man, I'm reading Ben's "Rolling Stone" and see something interesting... Not what you'd think... They actually do investigative journalism, practically a lost art these days. So in their review of the TV show "The Americans," they report on the 1983 G7 Summit while the Cold War was still going on. The "two gents entrusted with the nuclear launch codes" were Ronald Reagan and Leonid Brezhnev. Brezhnev was seventy something "boozing his way to his next (fatal) stroke." Reagan didn't read his briefing materials, explaining that "The Sound of Music" had been on the night before. I say, "Heavenly Father, how did we get through that time period?"
If you are from Thurmont you probably remember that on June 8, 1973 Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev took a helicopter ride from the front lawn of Catoctin High School to meet with President Nixon at the White House. Today in History: January 2nd. On this day in 1980, in a strong reaction to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty and recalls the U.S. ambassador to Moscow. These actions sent a message that the age of detente and the friendlier diplomatic and economic relations that were established between the United States and Soviet Union during President Richard Nixon's administration (1969-74) had ended. Carter feared that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, in which an estimated 30,000 combat troops entered that nation and established a puppet government, would threaten the stability of strategic neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan and could lead to the USSR gaining control over much of the world's oil supplies. The Soviet actions were labeled "a serious threat to peace" by the White House. Carter asked the Senate to shelve ratification talks on SALT II, the nuclear arms treaty that he and Soviet ...

learn from history? The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen, mostly composed of two alliances - the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. ... The decade-long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on Dec. 24, 1979, under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on Feb. 15, 1989, under the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or the "Bear Trap"
Ukraine and the USSR Lenin's attempts to assuage Ukrainian nationalism through a measure of cultural autonomy were abandoned by Stalin, who also imposed agricultural collectivization on Ukraine and requisitioned all grain for export. Millions of Ukrainians died in the resulting famine. Mykola Skrypnyk and other Ukrainian Communist leaders who opposed Stalinist measures were purged and executed. During World War II, many Ukrainians at first welcomed the Germans as liberators and collaborated with them against the USSR. However, the Nazis' scorn for all Slavs and their harsh occupation (1941–44) of Ukraine turned many Ukrainians into anti-German guerrilla fighters. The republic suffered severe wartime devastation, esp. as a battleground both in 1941–42 (the German advance) and 1943–44 (the Russian advance). Most of Ukraine's 1.5 million Jews were killed by the Nazis during the war; many were shot outright in 1941, at such sites as Babi Yar (Ukr. Babyn Yar ), outside Kiev. Your BirthdayScope for Thurs. Dec. 19: Happy Birthday, Sagittarius! You don’t expect an easy life and you certainly don’t count on others to make unusual sacrifices for you. In fact, you can’t bear to feel in others’ debt - or under anyone’s thumb. You’d much rather build a life for yourself, pay your own dues, and prove your own worth than cling to another’s coattails. No matter how artistic or idealistic you are, you’re a tough-minded pragmatist at heart. You have no interest in building castles in the air – unless, of course you’ve got loads of free time and a fat saving account. You need to build a dependable, secure life for yourself. Hard work doesn’t intimidate or bother you. You’d rather work harder and take care of yourself than eat bonbons on satin sheets and feel indebted to someone else. You are, after all, a freedom thirsty Sagittarian. You know that almost every good deed creates expectations and obligations, so you’d just as soon take care of yourself. Although man ...
On this day in history, December 19, 1906, LEONID BREZHNEV was born in Kamenskoye, Russia. He was the leader of Russia during the 1960's. Read more about the fascinating country of Russia from one of our many books at the Library.
Today is the birthday of Leonid Brezhnev.
All Commie haters should always note this that Communists saved Goa attack from NATO forces. The USSR had earlier vetoed a UN security council resolution condemning the Indian invasion of Goa. The head of state of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, who was touring India at the time of the war in 1961, made several speeches applauding the Indian action. In a farewell message, he urged Indians to ignore Western indignation as it came "from those who are accustomed to strangle the peoples striving for independence... and from those who enrich themselves from colonialist plunder". Nikita Khrushchev, the de facto Soviet leader, telegraphed Nehru stating that there was "unanimous acclaim" from every Soviet citizen for "Friendly India".

China - reforms - an excellent analysis published by ISN/ETH Zurich Soaring Dragon, Stumbling Bear: China’s Rise in a Comparative Context As a form of government, is China’s authoritarian capitalism more stable and predictable than democracy? That’s a dubious question, say Mark Harrison and Debin Ma. Beijing’s current political system has thrived in exceptional circumstances and can’t be instantly duplicated elsewhere. Introduction We are currently witnessing a historic reversal. For the first time in centuries, the real income of the average Chinese citizen is overtaking and, on some authoritative measures, has already exceeded that of those now living in the former Soviet Union. Soviet rulers from Joseph Stalin to Nikita Khrushchev to Leonid Brezhnev could once afford to patronize, and even despise, their Chinese comrades. In past times China respectfully saluted the Soviet Union as the ‘elder brother’ to be emulated. As late as in 1989, on a visit to China to mark the normalization of S ...
When Leonid Brezhnev, the country was fine, nice and rich, people are kind and friendly, the people of the country were the world's great! Under Putin, the impoverished country, the oligarchs got rich, ordinary people poorer, prices rose, revenues fell, Russian and brutalized ofashistilis, people have become strangers to each other and evil.
Modi’s obsession and the future of Indian state November 17, 2013: BJP feels it has done an effective cover up job by producing from nowhere someone calling himself Pranlal Soni, supposedly a resident of Kutch claiming that “Madhuri” is his daughter and he had asked family friend Narendra Modi to keep a watchful eye on his daughter in the big bad Ahmedabad. Great, what a caring and responsible “uncle” the aspiring prime minister of India has proved to be! Who wouldn’t want such a man to head the nation? He will then take care of all little girls keeping a watchful eye on every young woman, lest she goes astray and strikes a friendship with an undesirable boyfriend and causes heartburns to her parents and the state. And how do we know this “uncle” did not have an eye for the young woman? No we don’t. On the contrary the minute to minute reporting on the movements of the girl by the elite Anti Terrorist Squad of Gujarat Police suggests that the chief minister was obsessed with this girl. P ...
So does the USA . Russia allegedly maintains a vast, secretive underground complex. Since the mid-'90s, some sources have alleged that Russia is building (or has completed) a huge military complex popularly dubbed the Yamantau Complex. The structure, under Yamantau Mountain in the Urals, was started by Leonid Brezhnev, and its function is something of a mystery. When asked, Russian officials have variously described the project as a bunker, a mining site, a nuclear dump, or a storage area; others have simply declined to comment.

The Triumph of an Underground Man - Rachel Polonsky The Bridge Over the Neroch and Other Works by Leonid Tsypkin, translated from the Russian by Jamey Gambrell Leonid Tsypkin was the authentic underground man of the Soviet “era of stagnation,” leading a hidden life as a writer during Leonid Brezhnev’s years as Party leader. He died of a heart attack in Moscow in 1982 at the age of fifty-six, professionally hu...
Ronald Reagan retold this story (told to him by Mikhail Gorbachev). Leonid Brezhnev was the son of poor peasants who had risen to become Soviet Party Chairman. Proud of his new station with the trappings of power that would have pleased a Czar, he brought his aged mother in a huge limousine from her village to the Kremlin and showed her his lavish apartment. Afterward he had the limo take them to his country place in the woods outside Moscow. Following that, they took a train to the Crimea, where Mr. Brezhnev had a marble palace on the beach. Astounded, his mother whispered in his ear, " Leonid, but what if the Communists fine out? "
Ok, it's been going around the internet, and I've been picked by my friend Dorothy Lemoult, so here it goes: 10 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME. 1. I was named for famed British actor Christopher Lee. My grandfather got into a bar fight with him while he was stationed in England prior to D-Day in WWII. After the brawl they bought each other drinks and became lifelong friends. 2. When I was a boy I had a pet albino ocelot named "Ozzy." 3. During middle school I was seriously addicted to spray paint. I had a can a day habit, but only did the silver stuff. 4. I once made an entire suit of armor from roofing shingles. 5. When I was in 2nd grade I made a construction paper "Pop-up Book for Piece"(sic) and sent it to Russian Premier Leonid Brezhnev. He responded with a warm letter praising both my talent and class consciousness. 6. I once ate three live baby squirrels on a dare. 7. My aunt is famed choreographer Twyla Tharp. In fact, I lost my virginity to one of her principal dancers while hanging out ...
The Rights of Homosexuals under Stalin and his successors.- by ADRIEN ALPENDRE, Esq. In 1933, Article 121 was added to the criminal code for the entire Soviet Union, that expressly prohibited male homosexuality, with up to five years of hard labor in prison. There were no criminal statutes regarding lesbianism. During the Soviet regime, Western observers believed that between 800 to 1,000 men were imprisoned each year under Article 121. The precise reason for the new law is still in some dispute. Some historians have suggested that Joseph Stalin's enactment of the anti *** law was, like his prohibition on abortion, an attempt to increase the Russian birthrate and build a better relationship with the socially conservative Russian Orthodox Church. Some historians have noted that it was during this time that Soviet propaganda began to depict homosexuality as a sign of fascism, and that Article 121 may have been a simple political tool to use against dissidents, irrespective of their true sexual orientation, ...
INS Vikramaditya: Same name, multiple frames - India Today Spot the difference: (from top to bottom) the Kuznetsov, Liaoning, Vikramaditya. Photo: Sandeep Unnithan. In the 1960s, Admiral Sergey Gorshkov, the father of the modern Soviet navy, envisaged a fleet of aircraft carriers that could be deployed across the globe to challenge NATO. His dream has finally taken steam nearly a half-century later, but in a manner even the farsighted naval genius would not have suspected. As Elizabeth Antony cracks a coconut to commision the 44,500 tonne INS Vikramaditya in Severodvinsk, Russia, the Indian navy gets its largest warship. The commissioning of the Vikramaditya in Russia's Arctic shipyard makes India only the third country in the world after the US and Italy to operate more than one carrier. It will also be a second life for a warship which began life as a Soviet aircraft carrying cruiser the 'Baku' in 1987. The Vikramaditya has a lot in common with China's first aircraft carrier the Liaoning, that was commi ...
But something strange happened in Russia. Things did not go according to plan. There, Stalin had empowered Russian nationalism to some extent in order to win the war. And he did not trust the Jewish power structure, even though it was they who had created the Communist revolution to begin with. So he continued to empower Russians and disempower Jews after the war, a policy which his successors continued, vigorously. Russia did not open its borders to non-Whites, and neither did any of its satellite nations. Russia did not permit perverse and racially-destructive media and “education” to influence its young people. It reached the point in the 1980s when Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, would say to Margaret Thatcher at a European summit, “We are today deciding the future of the White race.” After the fall of Communism, this legacy is still in place. Russia and its allies are the only White nations on Earth with governments not dedicated to the extermination of their own people. Just mon ...
I grew up in ex Soviet Union. The Communist country, where everybody have been told what to do, what to think and what to believe in. Everybody had the same look, the same behavior and pattern in life. The ones who had different opinions and desires ended up in jail. The knowledge of a free world didn’t exist and wasn’t even optional. I was 7 years old when the General Secretary of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev died. I remember that feeling of being super scared about the future of my family. In my mind, Leonid Brezhnev was everything to us. I thought, “How are we going to live without him?!” Can you imagine the level of influence on a child’s thinking? When you’ve been told for long enough what is good or bad, what you can or cannot do, what your dream and life should look like, you start to believe this is the right and the only way. Sometimes it takes years to realize it's not true. It may take a lifetime to understand you didn’t have to live in that shoe box. But it might be too late. ...
RUSSIANS NAME BREZHNEV BEST 20TH-CENTURY LEADER, GORBACHEV WORST. Over half of Russians believe Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was the best head of state in the past century, followed by Bolshevik Revolution mastermind Vladimir Lenin and dictator Joseph Stalin, a poll by Levada Center has revealed. Sociologists asked Russians about their attitude towards 20th-century leaders. Some 56 percent of respondents have positive feelings about Brezhnev, who led the USSR from 1964 till 1982. A target of countless Soviet jokes and anecdotes, he is now disliked by 29 percent of people, Levada revealed. The first ruler of the Soviet Union, Lenin, is seen in a good light by 55 percent of Russians, while exactly one-half of Russians favor Stalin. However, over one-third of respondents do not approve of the leader, who is often described as “bloody tyrant.” Nikita Khruschev – who was Soviet premier during the Cuban missile crisis – is liked by 45 percent of Russians. That figure is slightly less than modern-day su ...

Cold War: 1982: Yuri Andropov assumes power in the Soviet Union Following the death of long-time Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev two days earlier, Yuri Andropov is selected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. It was the culmination of a long, but steady march up the Communist Party hierarchy for Andropov. Born in Russia in 1914, by the 1930s Andropov was an active participant in the Communist Youth League. During World War II, he led a group of guerilla fighters who operated behind Nazi lines. His work led to various positions in Moscow, and in 1954, he was named as Soviet ambassador to Hungary. During the Hungarian crisis of 1956, Andropov proved his reliability. He lied to Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy about Soviet military intentions, and later assured Nagy that he was safe from Soviet reprisals. Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest in November 1956 and Nagy was captured and executed in 1958. Andropov's work in Hungary brought him back to Moscow, where he continued ...
Fun to see this in the weekend Wall Street Journal: Martin Cruz Smith on Russian humorists: Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol 1. It's tempting to call Nikolai Gogol, author of "Dead Souls," the father of Russian satire. It might be more accurate to say, as he did, that "the comic is hidden everywhere, only living in the midst of it, we are not conscious of it." "Dead Souls" is the story of a certain Chichikov, a grifter who ventures into the Russian countryside with a scheme to buy tax credits for dead serfs. With a genius for description Gogol follows this Mr. Nobody, who is "not handsome, not ill-favored, not over-fat, and not over-thin" as he insinuates his way from fool to fool among the provincial gentry of czarist Russia. Gogol was done in by contradictions. In "Dead Souls" he wrote a sumptuous dining table scene "laden with sturgeon, caviar, salmon, herrings, cheese, smoked tongue, fresh roe"—86 kinds of food in all. Later, in a bout of religious asceticism, he would starve himself to death. Scenes Fro ...
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY: November 10, 1982 Vice President George Bush visits Cape Verde, Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Zaire and Kenya to discuss Namibian independence and U.S. policy in Africa. He attends the funeral of Leonid Brezhnev and meets with General Secretary Yuri Andropov in the USSR.
"Ostensibly, the Democrats and their henchmen interpret equality under the law to mean everybody is the same rather than we are all equally important in the eyes of God and under the law. This allows Obama to recreate the dictatorship of the proletariat to take things away from productive people so he can give it to a growing number of supporters who are already dependent on welfare. This present is gift-wrapped in the false promise of improving their lives. The funny thing is it never gets "there." Seventy years of that high minded " thinking" in Russia created only misery and poverty for her people along with a fantastic foreign car collection for Leonid Brezhnev." Henry Meers

Today is Tuesday, June 18, 2013. This is the 169th day of the year, with 196 days remaining in 2013. Fact of the Day: War of 1812 "The War of 1812 was fought between the U.S. and Great Britain from 1812-14, though some fighting continued after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in December of 1814. Most of the fighting took place along the Canadian border, in Chesapeake Bay, and along the Gulf of Mexico. After the American Revolution, the U.S. was anxious for the British to withdraw from American territory and their unwillingness to sign trade agreements with the U.S. The British were keeping the U.S. from trade with themselves and with France, with whom they were battling (French Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars). They captured U.S. ships and took hostages and goods and, by 1812, the British had blockaded America's coasts, ruining American trade and finances. So, the U.S. attacked the British colony of Canada. There was fighting on land and at sea - and though the Americans were not prepared at first, the ...

HISTORY TODAY. SALT II, TREATY SIGNED TODAY. SALT II was a series of talks between United States and Soviet negotiators from 1972 to 1979 which sought to curtail the manufacture of strategic nuclear weapons. It was a continuation of the SALT I talks and was led by representatives from both countries. SALT II was the first nuclear arms treaty which assumed real reductions in strategic forces to 2,250 of all categories of delivery vehicles on both sides. An agreement to limit strategic launchers was reached in Vienna on June 18, 1979, and was signed by Leonid Brezhnev and Jimmy Carter. In response to the refusal of the United States Senate to ratify the treaty, a junior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, met with the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrey Gromyko, "educated him about American concerns and interests" and secured several changes that neither the Secretary of State nor Carter could obtain. Six months after the signing, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanist ...
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 led to a hail of denunciation from both Western states and the Muslim world that came as a shock to Leonid Brezhnev and the other Soviet leaders locked away in the Kremlin. In the West, the invasion was condemned as an example of brutal Soviet imperialism, but the Kremlin genuinely considered it more a short-term police action designed to restore order among the battling Afghan communist factions that had seized Kabul in the coup of 1978. The Soviets also hoped to push Afghanistan on a more secular, progressive course, with improved educational facilities and greater freedom for women. Needless to say, these were ideas that found little support outside the metropolitan elites in Kabul, and the Soviets made matters worse with their heavy handed imposition of authority. The original Soviet time-frame for the operation was around six months, but the Red Army found itself embroiled in a bloody and fruitless war that would last for more than nine years. The U ...
Finally, my degree in Political Science from Indiana University is proving to be of some value. For years, I have joked that I had a degree in study of a country that no longer exists. I chose to study the Soviet Union. Why, you might ask, would I conclude that there is new value in my three years learning Russian history, Soviet theory, Marxism and the like? I am watching the news coverage of President Barack Obama and Russian Federation President f(or Life) Vlad Putin at the G8 conference. I have not seen such a chilling performance since the Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev period. Pundits are already calling the Syrian proxy war as the beginning of a new Cold War stand-off of two super powers. Let's get something straight- Russia is strong, and now wields power because of their newfound wealth in the form of natural gas. The ruble is considered a hard currency, instead of a version of junk-bond bank notes. Because they have not been a topic of discussion since the failure of the USSR, many Americans think of Ru ...

Hurray ! ~ A MODERATE Fascist , Misogynist, Homophobic, Anti West, Anti Christian, Anti Semite has been elected Puppet of the Ayatollahs and President of Iran. Public hangings from construction cranes, will now only be carried out on Mondays , Wednesdays and Thursdays. Women may now .umm nothing. His development of nuclear weapons to fire at Israel and Saudi Arabia will also be , moderate. This reminds me of how after the death of Stalin of the USSR he was followed by another quarter century of dictators like Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov etc.
Prelude to NATO exercise[edit] Operation RYAN[edit] Main article: Operation RYAN A KGB Report on 1981 reporting that the KGB had "implemented measures to strengthen intelligence work in order to prevent a possible sudden outbreak of war by the enemy." To do this, the KGB "actively obtained information on military and strategic issues, and the aggressive military and political plans of imperialism [the United States] and its accomplices," and "enhanced the relevance and effectiveness of its active intelligence abilities." From the The National Security Archive. The greatest catalyst to the Able Archer war scare occurred more than two years earlier. In a May 1981 closed-session meeting of senior KGB officers and Soviet leaders, General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and KGB chairman Yuri Andropov bluntly announced that the United States was preparing a secret nuclear attack on the USSR. To combat this threat, Andropov announced, the KGB and GRU would begin Operation RYAN. RYAN (РЯН) was a Russian acronym for ...

In my old school times, we used to sing a song, "Druzhba-Freundschaft". For me, this friendly kiss of the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and his GDR colleague Erich Honecker is still about that 'Druzhba-Freundschaft'. Today, those mo***ckers whose own Freudian complexes have perverted everything, prohibit "propaganda of untraditional (whatever they mean) sexual relations". in fact, on the contrary, nobody has ever done more to achieve this curious goal of developing such kind of propaganda. Mr. von Ribbentrop would have been jealous.
Robert Kraft says the Russian leader simply pocketed the ring and walked out of the room during a 2005 visit.
It is amazing how the two countries still seem to be joined at the hip, with the U.S. at times imitating and at times almost supernaturally mirroring political developments in Russia

Explaining this song to Q magazine in 1992, lead singer Michael Stipe said: "The words come from everywhere. I'm extremely aware of everything around me, whether I am in a sleeping state, awake, dream-state or just in day to day life. There's a part in 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' that came from a dream where I was at Lester Bangs' birthday party and I was the only person there whose initials weren't L.B. So there was Lenny Bruce, Leonid Brezhnev, Leonard Bernstein... So that ended up in the song along with a lot of stuff I'd seen when I was flipping TV channels. It's a collection of streams of consciousness."
Many years ago, I was a Russian linguist in the US Air Force. I was assigned to work for the National Security Agency. The work I did there, at the height of the Cold War, was fascinating, challenging, and directly linked to our survival as a nation. I was surrounded by extremely talented and motivated people, who came to work every day excited to use the high-tech tools at our disposal to keep our nation safe. We had a Mission. While the Soviet Union no longer exists, I believe that the current employees at NSA are every bit as enthused about their mission today as we were forty years ago. We dealt with materials and equipment protected by the highest levels of security. Top Secret is just the beginning of the levels of classification designed to prevent disclosure of the nation’s secrets. My work as a Russian linguist meant that I worked with communications intelligence, or “ComInt” as they called it. ComInt has an associated code word that distinguishes it from other kinds of materials wit ...
Leonid Brezhnev called in all his advisors and declared that he was abolishing time zones. But why?, they asked. "This means war!" said FDR, after reading the intercepted instructions from Tokyo to its diplomats the night of Dec. 6, 1941. Roosevelt's secretary of war? Henry Stimson. Times change, and they change us. The CIA was created in 1947; the National Security Agency in 1952, with its headquarters at Ft. Meade in Maryland. This writer's late brother was stationed at Meade doing "photo interpretation'' in the years the CIA's Gary Powers, flying U-2s at 70,000 feet above Mother Russia, was providing the agency with some interesting photographs. This last week, through security leaks, we learned that the NSA has access to the phone records of Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. Of every call made to, from o ...
Liberals & Progressives are CONTROL FREAKS - they believe that they are smarter than everyone else; that only they know what is best for all, that they were doing the 'greatest good for the greatest number' and that the 'end' - as long as it is based on 'good intentions' - justified the 'means' (including premeditated murder). So did these infamous statists: Vladimir Lenin, Pol Pot, Nikita Khrushchev, Mao Tse-Tung, Leonid Brezhnev, Leon Trotsky, Kim Jong-Il, Kim Jong Un, Kim Il-Sung, Joseph Stalin, Jose Mujica, Idi Amin, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, *** Chi Minh, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, Envir Hoxha, Benito Mussolini, Augusto Pinochet, Adolph Hitler.
Organized crime existed in Russia since the days of the Tsars and Imperial Russia in the form of banditry and thievery, known as Vory v zakone or "thieves in law". This class of criminal had to abide by certain rules in the prison system. One such rule was cooperation with the authorities of any kind was forbidden. During World War II some prisoners made a deal with the government to enlist in the armed forces in return for a reduced sentence, but upon their return to prison they were attacked and killed by inmates who remained loyal to the rules of the thieves. During the Leonid Brezhnev era when the Soviet economy took a downhill turn, the Vory would take control of the black market with the help of corrupt officials, supplying products such as electronics which were hard to reach for the ordinary Soviet citizen. The real breakthrough for criminal organizations occurred during the economic disaster and mass emigration of the 1990s that followed the fall of the Soviet Union. Desperate for money, many for ...

Friends, it is with incredulity that I learned from my friends in the Ukrainian-Canadian community that the Liberal Party had issued a statement celebrating the Soviet "Victory Day in Ukraine," a holiday created under the reign of Soviet dictator Leonid Brezhnev. In Ukraine, the day after May 8, 1945 represented no victory. It was a continuation of evil and hate against the Ukrainian population. They deliberately sought to deform a society by destroying a proud nation's culture and historical memory. What the Liberal Party failed to mention in its "congratulatory" remarks is that the war against the Ukrainian people did not end on May 8, 1945. Beginning under Joseph Stalin, they employed famine, mass arrests, executions, and deportations to the Gulag. These were the merciless tools used to subjugate the Ukrainian people and crush their struggle for national freedom and independence. All of this took place after the official end of WWII and continued through the 20th century until the USSR eventually colla ...

Installing and undermining governments After World War II Soviet security organizations played key role in installing puppet Communist governments in Eastern Europe, the People's Republic of China, North Korea, and later Afghanistan. Their strategy included mass political repressions and establishment of subordinate secret services in all occupied countries Some of the active measures were undertaken by the Soviet secret services against their own governments or Communist rulers. Russian historians Anton Antonov-Ovseenko and Edvard Radzinsky suggested that Joseph Stalin was killed by associates of NKVD chief Lavrentiy Beria, based on the interviews of a former Stalin's body guard and circumstantial evidence. According to Yevgeniya Alabts allegations, Chief of the KGB Vladimir Semichastny was among the plotters against Nikita Khrushchev in 1964. KGB chairman Yuri Andropov reportedly struggled for power with Leonid Brezhnev. Soviet coup attempt of 1991 against Mikhail Gorbachev was organized by KGB chairman ...
The mystery about the contents of the last pope's letter to his successor is similar to the story from Russia during the Cold War about Nikita Khrushchev giving 2 letters to his successor Leonid Brezhnev and telling him that if he finds himself in a bind to open the first letter, and if he is in REAL trouble open the second letter. When the time came he opened the first letter and it said.. "Blame everything on me." When he found himself in a real fix, he opened the second letter. It read.. "TIME TO WRITE 2 LETTERS". Smart guys these Russians.
Five Reasons Barak Obama is a Creep John Hawkins Is Barack Obama the Vladimir Lenin of American Presidents? No, Lenin was competent in an evil sort of way. Obama is more like Leonid Brezhnev: an ultra left-wing, belligerent doofus who isn't laughed at by the general population primarily because the mainstream media liberals say nice things about him out of fear that they'll end up in a gulag if they're too harsh. Of course, we don't have gulags, but reporters who criticize Obama would be snubbed by their peers at cocktail parties in Manhattan and Old Town, which seems almost as bad to liberals. This is how a narcissist who scores at "Nixon after Watergate" on the presidential likability scale can be perceived by much of the public as a long suffering, bipartisan nice guy. The real picture is less Van Gogh and is more Andy Warhol, if Andy Warhol were a five year old coloring with cow dung crayons. 1) Obama NEVER stops campaigning: Barack Obama almost seems disinterested in actually governing the country. A ...

Violence & Terrorism - It is unfortunate neither every one condemn nor act to stop all such non-sense here or there. Any illegal activity including violence & Terrorism are sign of mental sickness which need proper treatment by taking care from childhood and proper social justice in society. A person not having proper social justice in life can easily be attracted to do any act (legal or Illegal) to achieve in Paradise through a wrong preaching . Many Scholars & Allama Irfan Abdi (1984-87) emphasized "If proper care and attention not given to the growing hatred society and the creating of differences in various groups during Zia's tenure supported by foreign elements for the political gains, then no control shall be possible and no one shall be saved ". We talk about here & there - sometimes Palestine, sometimes Burma, sometimes India & Pakistan, Iraq & Afghanistan but hardly any one care about peace & prosperity of their own people. Every one is selfish & have goals of their own interest (America to ...

So if $9/hour is a good minimum wage, it seems $18/hour would be great, right? But why stop there? If all it takes is a vote by Congress, why not just pay everyone $1 million a year, and make us all millionaires? Oh, that's right, because the laws of economics get in the way at some point.

Somebody notify Obama that there are 3 branches of government. The Executive, Judicial and the Legislative branches. The legislative branch is for making the laws to avoid this country from being ran by dictators. Mussolini, Hitler, Chiang Kai-shek, Ferdinand Marcos, Hideki Tojo, *** Chi Minh, Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, Leonid Brezhnev , Nikita Khrushchev, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Slobodan Milošević were all dictators that grabbed at every chance to gain power. The US government is set up to have checks and balances to prevent this from happening. If you want tougher gun laws and it is the will of the people then follow the correct channels to make these laws.
Historical context When Yuri Andropov succeeded Leonid Brezhnev as leader of the Soviet Union in November 1982, the mainstream Western newspapers and magazines ran numerous front page photographs and articles about him. Most coverage was negative and tended to a perception of a new threat to the stability of the Western world. Andropov had been the Soviet Ambassador to Hungary during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and began his tenure as Soviet leader by strengthening the powers of the KGB, and by suppressing dissidents.[2] Andropov declared, "the struggle for human rights was a part of a wide-ranging imperialist plot to undermine the foundation of the Soviet state."[3] Much international tension surrounded both Soviet and American efforts to develop weapons capable of being launched from satellites in orbit. Both governments had extensive research and development programs to develop such technology. However, both nations were coming under increasing pressure to disband the project. In America, president R ...

“FORWARD” Not Appealing Enough Ghulam Habib Wardak Larawbar.com 2012-11-11 It all started in September 2001, when Cowboy Bush waged war on Afghan people under the operation code named “Operation Infinite Justice” which was later changed to “Operation Enduring Freedom” to oust a radical and fundamentalist regime of Taliban, which provided sanctuaries and as well training camps to global terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and many more. Democracy, nation building, human rights, women rights, freedom of speech and many other utopian incentives were promised to the Afghan society. A grand atmosphere of hope was created. Afghan people looked up on Americans and its allies as brothers and great friends because they were looking at Cowboy Bush through the same lenses as they used to look at President R. Reagan through. The west in general and the Americans in particular were put in charge of the driver’s seat and Afghans who were looking forward to this joyous ride were made to sit in the pa ...
