Disgraceful For Charles E. Woods, mystery still shrouds the death of his son and of three other Americans in the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. “It’s been almost a year, and very few questions have been answered,” said Mr. Woods, father of Tyrone Woods, one of two former Navy SEALs who died that day. “Even fewer questions have been answered truthfully,” Mr. Woods said. “What we have so far is basically limited access, withholding even the names of people who were on the ground and had firsthand knowledge and pretty much any answers that we have had are just smoke and mirror without any substance.” For example, there has been little public testimony from the American personnel in Benghazi on exactly what happened as extremists attacked them. Did they make calls for help and, if so, what did the U.S. military tell them? By DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek   Team,   For the past 11 years we have marked Sept. 11 as a day to remember all those who died in the worst terrorist attack in America’s history. This year, as we remember and pay tribute to the innocent lives lost and the many strangers and first responders who risked their lives to save others, we continue to keep the men and women of our Armed Forces in the forefront of our minds. They remain on duty to defend our nation so this type of tragedy never happens again.   As we celebrate Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance, our nation’s spirit of patriotism, service and unity has never been stronger or more resolute. We should all be inspired by a current generation that includes more than 5 million Americans who stepped forward and volunteered to serve and protect this nation after the Sept. 11 attacks. All of those service members, in addition to first responders and family members, have sacrificed much for their d ...
Syria and its ally Iran have been building cyberattack capabilities for years and soon might have a chance to use their skills in a hot war for the first time. Former U.S. officials and cybersecurity scholars say Syria has a demonstrated cyberattack capability and could retaliate against anticipated Western military strikes against Syria for its suspected chemical weapons attack against civilians in the country’s 2-year-old civil war. “It’s foreseeable that Syrian state-sponsored or state-sympathetic hackers could seek to retaliate” against U.S., Israeli or Western interests, Michael Chertoff, a former secretary of Homeland Security, told The Washington Times on Wednesday. “We have already seen regional cyberactors, such as the Syrian Electronic Army, conduct attacks on U.S. targets,” added Rep. James R. Langevin, Rhode Island Democrat and a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The Syrian Electronic Army has successfully attacked comp ...

Remember Leon E. Panetta put in tons of Legal Military changes when/if DOMA died (benefits for *** Spouse). This is BIG.
The decision is likely to have a big impact on 17,000 troops and veterans whose same-sex spouses have been shut out of a wide variety of benefits, from health care to military housing — and even the ability to be buried at the same cemetery. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were scheduled to hold a briefing Wednesday afternoon and could release some details on the next steps. In February, the Defense Department granted some benefits to same-sex couples on its own authority, including child care, emergency leave, and death and disability compensation. But the rest were up in the air until the Supreme Court ruling, because by law, they apply only to spouses — so the Defense Department said it had no authority to give them to same-sex couples. Those included some of the biggest military benefits, like health coverage for spouses under TRICARE and housing allowances. They also included the right to be buried together at Arlington Nationa ...

Yahoo.com June 17, 2013 Military Plans Would Put Women In Most Combat Jobs By Lolita C. Baldor, Associated Press WASHINGTON--Women may be able to start training as Army Rangers by mid-2015 and as Navy SEALs a year later under plans set to be announced by the Pentagon that would slowly bring women into thousands of combat jobs, including those in elite special operations forces. Details of the plans were obtained by The Associated Press. They call for requiring women and men to meet the same physical and mental standards to qualify for certain infantry, armor, commando and other front-line positions across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reviewed the plans and has ordered the services to move ahead. The move, expected to be announced Tuesday, follows revelations of a startling number of sexual assaults in the armed forces. Earlier this year, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey said the sexual assaults might be linked to the longstanding ban on women servi ...
A War of Words If you’re a history buff, you know that governments don’t talk a lot about espionage . But there are exceptions, and China’s hacking of America is one of the biggest you’ll find. In early May, in its latest annual report, the U.S. Pentagon for the first time made the same assertion that we've been making to Private Briefing subscribers for months: China's “Internet Army” is waging an organized campaign of digital espionage against America. And it’s doing so with the full knowledge and backing of the country’s leaders in Beijing. "In 2012, numerous computer systems around the world, including those owned by the U.S. government, continued to be targeted for intrusions, some of which appear to be attributable directly to the Chinese government and [its] military" – the People's Liberation Army, the U.S. Defense Department report alleged. China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said the Pentagon was just trying to hype the China military threat and justify a cyber-def ...

Elite Units in U.S. Military to Admit Women WASHINGTON — Women will be permitted to serve in the most intense and physically hazardous combat positions in the military, including the Navy SEALs, the Army Rangers and the Marine infantry, senior defense officials said Monday. Leaders of each service branch are expected to make public at the Pentagon on Tuesday their plans for how they will integrate women into the units without reducing rigorous standards. Panetta announced in January in one of his last decisions as defense secretary that he was lifting the military’s official ban on women in combat, he did not specify which of the hundreds of thousands of front-line combat positions might be open to t ...

I understand that you had to publically support the decision of the President. However your statement that: “the basic principle that you don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what is going on, without having some real-time information about what’s taking place” was an insult to the actions of U.S. Armed Forces throughout our history. ACLU states the White House has a self serving attitude towards transparency. ACLU sues to force release of drone attack records By Karen DeYoung, February 01, 2012 The American Civil Liberties Union asked a federal court Wednesday to force the Obama administration to release legal and intelligence records related to the killing of three U.S. citizens in drone attacks in Yemen last year. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, charged the Justice and Defense Departments and the CIA with illegally failing to respond to requests made in October under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). It cited public comments made by President Obama, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and other officials in arguing that the government cannot credibly claim a secrecy defense. “The government’s self-serving attitude toward transparency and disclosure is unacceptable,” the ACLU said in a statement. “Officials cannot be allowed to release bits of information about the targ ...
Dear President Obama, Honorable Leon E. Panetta, Mary Landrieu, David Vitter, Bill Cassidy: In response to the sequestration and the suspension of military tuition assistance, my feedback is addressed in the following letter: I am a 23 year old male serving in the Louisiana National Guard as a Sergeant. I've been in the military for almost six years. When I returned from Afghanistan in April 2012, I re-enlisted for another six years. My main reason for doing so was for my education and my healthcare benefits. I volunteered my service to my country another six years for these benefits. My first six years I obtained an associate’s degree, became a licensed paramedic, and IFSAC qualified Firefighter through utilizing military benefits. I then volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan as a medic for one of the most dangerous missions, to perform route clearance operations. I volunteered to give up that year to fight alongside my brothers in arms with a purpose to protect this Nation. I returned home and I am now ...
On the Brink of Sequestration Sequestration takes effect at midnight on March 1. The Pentagon has repeatedly warned that it can’t absorb the sequestration cuts without profound effects, especially on readiness. —John A. Tirpak March 1, 2013—After more than a year of resisting preparations for a possible budget sequestration in 2013—certain Congress would never allow such a destructive hit on the nation’s military—then-Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta in January reluctantly ordered the services to hunker down and hoard cash. The move was intended to blunt—however minimally—the effects of what he called a “perfect storm of budget uncertainty.” Speaking with reporters in the Pentagon on Jan. 10, Panetta admitted that “we have no idea what the *** s going to happen” with regard to military budgets in this and future fiscal years, making it impossible to plan and wickedly hard to manage defense spending. During the press conference and subsequent media interviews, he pleaded for act ...

Budget cuts could result in up to 20 percent pay cut for federal workers By Joe Davidson, Published: February 20 “When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.” — East African proverb As the White House and Congress, Republicans and Democrats, trade blows over who is at fault for the looming across-the-board budget cuts known as the sequester, it is federal workers who will get hit. With Congress appearing incapable of avoiding $85 billion in automatic cuts by the March 1 deadline, agencies are preparing to force unpaid furlough days on workers that could cost them up to a fifth of their pay. Those workers must be asking themselves what would happen if they missed such an important deadline, for the second time in as many months. They know what would happen, but the staff can’t punish Congress, no matter how much that might be warranted. In a notice to employees Wednesday, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said he is “deeply concerned about the potential direct impact of sequestration on y ...

Pentagon and VA End Billion-Dollar Electronic Health Records Project Back to News inShare. Sunday, February 10, 2013 Eric Shinseki and Leon Panetta (photo: va.gov) Despite several years’ worth of positive progress reports and more than $1 billion, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) last week announced they are abandoning their attempt to create a unified, shared electronic health-records system for service members and veterans. Begun in 2008, the project was intended to help ease the health care aspects of the transition from military to civilian life. Now, DoD and VA say merging the existing systems presents a faster, cheaper path toward eventual integration of medical records. Anticipating likely criticism, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta emphasized the imminent benefits of the decision: “Rather than building a single, integrated system from scratch, we will focus our immediate efforts on integrating VA and DOD health data as quickly as possible by upgradin ...

BOYKIN: Common sense, emotion and women in combat A lack of front-line privacy would be humiliating By Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin January 29, 2013 The recent decision by outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta to allow women to serve in front-line combat units is fraught with problems, and no one in the administration or at the Department of Defense seems to be considering them. First of all, it is important to understand that the nature of warfare has changed substantially in the last couple of decades. Linear battlefields with clearly defined front lines and rear areas are no longer the norm and are unlikely to re-emerge in future warfare. Furthermore, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and suicide bombers have become a ubiquitous threat that does not discriminate between combat soldiers and support personnel. Consequently, everyone in combat areas is vulnerable to enemy attack and could find themselves in contact with the enemy in an instant. This means women are already in combat and will continue t ...
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta recently announced the end of direct combat exclusion for female service members (Ref 1).  This decision was endorsed by the White House (Ref 2).  I would like to express my concern regarding this decision. The violence of war is tragic for anyone, man or women.  I feel that we are making a poor decision by greatly increasing the potential for women to be exposed to the violence of war.  As a nation we are eroding the value we place in families and the unique role of women in childbearing.  Men and women have been created differently and we should not be afraid to acknowledge this difference.  Diversity is not inferiority.  All roles are important regardless of the nature of the role.  It is my opinion that serving in combat for increased pay or promotion is not a good reason to serve in that role, nor do I feel that it is the best environment to establish/maintain unit cohesiveness. I feel this decision is priming us to requiring females to register for the draft ...

Nor this time. Message from the Director: Remembering September 11th Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Leon E. Panetta on Remembering September 11th September 10, 2010 Tomorrow, our country will remember the terrible day on which nearly 3,000 Americans were killed by terrorists. Because al-Qa’ida’s victims were innocent men, women, and children going about their daily lives; because the fanaticism and cruelty of the murderers were so vile; and because their hatred was aimed squarely at the values we stand for as a nation, September 11th, 2001 will forever be a defining moment for Americans. [Blah, blah, blah] Protecting America is the work of all Americans. To defend the things we all hold dear takes teamwork, strength, and determination. In the last days of November, Israel’s top military commanders called the Pentagon to discuss troubling intelligence that was showing up on satellite imagery: Syrian troops appeared to be mixing chemicals at two storage sites, probably the deadly nerve gas sarin, and filling dozens of 500-pounds bombs that could be loaded on airplanes. The combination of a public warning by Mr. Obama and more sharply worded private messages sent to the Syrian leader and his military commanders through Russia and others, including Iraq, Turkey and possibly Jordan, stopped the chemical mixing and the bomb preparation. Panetta, Beijing, China, Wednesday, September 19, 2012 - Thank you very much, General, for that kind introduction. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the entire leadership of the Engineering Academy of the PLA Armored Forces for the invitation to be able to be with you today. This is a particular privilege for me, because many years ago now, I had the opportunity, when I was in college, to go through what was called the ROTC program, which was the training that I received in order to become an officer in the United States Army. And coming to these schools always reminds me of that experience. I also want to express my great appreciation to the Chinese people for their hospitality, for their kindness during my first trip to this country as the United States secretary of defense. Over the course of my ...
Very sad for our military. What is going on? All U.S. military Combatant Commands, Services, the National Guard Bureau and Joint Staff are under Dempsey's Muslim Brotherhood-dictated orders to ensure that henceforth, no U.S. military course will ever again teach truth about Islam that the jihadist enemy finds offensive (or just too informative). To all intents and purposes, DoD Secretary Leon E. Panetta likewise has acquiesced to a Muslim Brotherhood takeover of U.S. military education.”

The Pentagon is facing a record year of suicides among active-duty troops, averaging 33 deaths per month so far this year, according to Pentagon data through September 2.” You can read more at:

Seals Reveal Truth About Bin Laden Raid Osama Bin Laden was killed within 90 seconds of the US Navy Seals landing in his compound and not after a protracted gun battle, according to the first account by the men who carried out the raid. The operation was so clinical that only 12 bullets were fired. The Seals have spoken out because they were angered at the version given by politicians, which they see as portraying them as cold-blooded murderers on a kill mission. They were also shocked that President Barack 0bama announced Bin Laden's death on television the same evening, rendering useless much of the intelligence they had seized. Chuck Pfarrer, a former commander of Seal Team 6, which conducted the operation, has interviewed many of those who took part for a book, Seal Target Geronimo, to be published in the US this week. The Seals own accounts differ from the White House version, which gave the impression that Bin Laden was killed at the end of the operation rather than in its opening seconds. Pfarrer ...

This-N-That This past week the James Haley VA facility in Tampa Florida was questioned as to why they had a hidden security camera in the room of a Brain Damaged Veteran in their care. Of course they denied it, then later on said it helped them to provide better care and not have to staff the patient with a 24 hours nurse. But, then they later removed the camera which was disguised as a smoke detector. I can understand the need and use of security cameras in hallways, stairwells, even elevators, but in a patient room? Ok, I admit in a patient room could be very useful but why the need to disguise it? Leads one to believe that the VA Hospital has something to hide. And what about the patients rights to privacy? Then we still have the problem of medical staff being hired and no clearly outlined HR policies and procedures on background checks, full physical checks, and here we go again with one VA Employee who has Hepatitis has gone and infected four Veterans in Maryland. Finally, someone in DC has actuall ...

Obama inert, Syria collapses By Jennifer Rubin The situation in Syria is dire. The Post reports: “Government loyalists lashed out in revenge on the streets of Damascus on Wednesday after a bombing that killed three senior military figures brought the bloodshed that has engulfed Syria to the heart of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.” As usual, we get blindingly obvious pronouncements from the administration and no articulated policy: In Washington, U.S. officials said the attack offered a clear sign of the Assad regime’s vulnerability. But they expressed anxiety about the potential for increased chaos as the rebels try to press their advantage and the regime seeks to reassert its authority. “This is a situation that is rapidly spinning out of control,” Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said at a Pentagon news briefing. Former deputy national security adviser Elliott Abrams writes: What the administration wants, it has seemed for all 17 months of the Syrian revolt, is to hide behind the U.N. ...

Panetta Commentary Focuses on War’s Unseen Wounds American Forces Press Service In a National Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day commentary published in the San Antonio Express-News, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta asked Americans to join the Defense Department in its continuing efforts to address the unseen wounds of war. Here is the secretary’s commentary: For more than 10 years of war, America's finest men and women have repeatedly deployed to distant battlefields to defend our nation. They have performed magnificently, enduring the brutal and unpredictable nature of modern warfare in marketplaces, road, and fields. Each of them has come back changed. As our service members return home to American supermarkets, highways, and ball games, the stress of combat often continues. For some it happens in a crowded place, for others it is when they are alone. All of a sudden, they are in a fight once again: one that is harder to see, harder to understand, and leaves too many fighting on their ow ...

wo of the 18 photographs given to the paper were published Wednesday by The Times over fierce objections by military officials who said that the photographs could incite violence. The officials had asked The Times not to publish any of the photographs, a fact that the defense secretary, Leon E. But the newspaper’s editors said that the photographs were newsworthy. “We considered this very carefully,” the newspaper’s editor, Davan Maharaj, said in a Web chat with readers. “At the end of the day, our job is to publish information that our readers need to make informed decisions. We have a particular duty to report vigorously and impartially on all aspects of the American mission in Afghanistan.
