I guess Leni Riefenstahl is his videographer.
Am I the only one who hates "Forrest Gump"? Even if fairly well made, it's actually a piece of insipid and reprehensible propaganda against the value of human intelligence, a movie that lies about the years of the peace movement and what liberalism gave us. At the film's end, Gump's running across the country pushes forward the nonsense that the conservative (Republican) way is right and will return to blow away the progressive advances. It's a damned lie, and the film is nearly as mendacious as Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi commercial, "Triumph of the Will".
They don't call me Leni Riefenstahl for nothing 😎
L is for blogging challenge. Famous for her propaganda film, "Triumph of the Will".

DER HEILIGE BERG ("The Holy Mountain"; Arnold Fanck, 1926). The time has been a good friend of Dr. Arnold Fanck, the German director who in the Twenties started, with his "The Holy Mountain", that type of film (or perhaps "genre") known as "Bergfilme" ("Mountainfilm"). Indeed although the poor dramatic script (centered on a very usual love triangle) and the not remarkable performances of its main actors, the stunning, surprising, magnificent quality of its cinematography have contributed to revaluate this movie that I consider a must-to-see by all silent cinema lovers. Nevermore the mountains are been showed in such magnificent way (and without cinematic tricks) and I suggest its vision how a visual experience and a way to know which extent of technical and visual mastery the German cinema reached in the Twenties. Two of the main characters are the Tyroler highlander Luis Trenker (then movie director) and Leni Riefenstahl at the beginning of her distinctive (and often blamed) career as filmmaker. r.m.

American Southwest Theater Company at NMSU Theater Arts presents “Aunt Raini” at the Center for the Arts on the NMSU campus.  Written by department head Tom Smith, the production is directed by Mark Medoff and features professional guest artist Stephanie Monday in the title role. Performances run February 21 to March 9.      The play centers on Katherine, a successful gallery owner who must decide what to do when controversial, though historically significant, art work is left to her by her aunt.         “The show had a reading at a professional theatre in Boca Raton, its premiere at the Black Box Theatre in Las Cruces in 2006, and a production at SUNY-Fredonia,” details playwright Smith. “Each production was dramatically different because the play itself was still in development.  What audiences will see here is what I consider the final version of the script, the culmination of all of those other productions.”   Because the drama is loosely based on the career of Leni Riefenstahl ...

it is astounding to see the best movie of the year emerge from the doldrums of Pakistani cinema ,it deals intelligently and obsessively with terrorism and its various offshoots in Pak ,it also exacts a very multi layered theme about energy crisis and incompetent corruption ,but balances all henceforth with the goodwill of ordinary people even when it costs them their life . The tehnical aspects like sound mixing ,camera dynamics and editing is almost perfect ,and given a huge canvas and an expensive set up this is a remarkable achievement in cinema from planning to execution ,which all are immaculately rendered by debut director -Bilal Lashari . The movie discusses the sub cultures in Pak that have evolved in last 3 decades ,it mirrors the truth about the love that ordinary people bear for their land and shockingly it doesnt sermonise or propagate unlike the bolly hollywood equivalents like ARGO etc - The team deliver a sophisticated yet realistic product that can be watched several times as its gripping ...

Later, he would state,[citation needed] “ If anybody asked me which was the best match that I played in, I will unhesitatingly say that it was the 1933 Beighton Cup final between Calcutta Customs and Jhansi Heroes. Calcutta Customs was a great side those days; they had Shaukat Ali, Asad Ali, Claude Deefholts, Seaman, Mohsin, and many others who were then in the first flight of Indian hockey. I had a very young side. Besides my brother Roop Singh, and Ismail, who played for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway in Mumbai, I had no other really great player in the team. How do I always end up on the Wikipedia page for Leni Riefenstahl
Every once in a long while, against my better judgement, I take a moment to read the comments posted at Yahoo. Since Murdoch bought Yahoo, the site has become almost worthless as a source for news. As a matter of fact, it's just a *** shame that Leni Riefenstahl is no longer around to administer the site. I keep hearing the polling organizations say that hardcore conservatives (i.e. neofascists) account for less than ten percent of the American electorate. Why is it, then, that they manage to troll just about every website currently in existence? Is this part of their training? Is there a place where they go, like some sort of Hitler Youth camp, where they learn how to troll? I'd give a war pension to know.

Walt Disney: 7 Things You Didn’t Know About the Man & the Institution By Micah White For almost 100 years, the name Walt Disney has been so synonymous with animated films, television channels, and child-friendly theme parks it’s easy to forget that, at one time, the moniker referred to an actual person. Born in 1901, Walter Elias “Walt” Disney grew to be one of America’s most preeminent business tycoons by the time he died in 1966. Within this short time, he became a beloved animator, producer, director, screenwriter, and voice actor (who happens to have more Academy Awards and nominations than anyone else in history). Not too bad for a cartoonist from Chicago. Although Walt Disney died almost 40 years ago, the mass media stronghold of his company remains as strong as ever. The voluminous canon of Walt Disney Studios, not to mention the work of all of its subsidiaries, often overshadows the life of its founder. Soon, however, the voice of Walt Disney himself will be pumped into movie theaters th ...

From 'Papering the Cracks' : "Parenthetically, it is worth drawing brief attention here to John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian, perhaps the only one of these s fantasy films to dispense with a liberal cloak, parading its Fascism shamelessly in instantly recognizable popular signifiers: it opens with a quotation from Nietzsche, has the spirit of its dead heroine leap to the rescue at the climax as a Wagnerian Valkyrie, and in between unabashedly celebrates the Aryan male physique with a singlemindedness that would have delighted Leni Riefenstahl. Its token *** is dispatched with a kick in the groin, and its arch-villain is black. There is an attempt, it is true, to project Fascism on to him (so that he can be allotted the most gruesome of the film’s many grisly deaths), but it is difficult to imagine a more transparent act of displacement."
According to Gallup, 99 percent of Americans believe Iran is a threat to them, just as the majority believed Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. "Propaganda always wins," said Leni Riefenstahl, "if you allow it." "The new propaganda is liberal. The new slavery is digital." ~ by John Pilger

Documentary Filmmaking Contrary to narrative cinema, which tells stories that are usually pure fabrications of someone’s imagination, documentary filmmaking is concerned with the exposure and analyses of real facts and historical events. Subjects of documentaries can be the hunting of endangered species, the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, and the downfall of the Nazi regime. Even though documentary cinema explores actualities, not all documentaries present the absolute truth a hundred percent of the time. Filmmakers, like any other artists, are both privileged and burdened by the power of manipulation. As such, they are blessed and cursed by the possibility to bend the truth. While some directors choose to simply broadcast occurrences, like Jacques Perrin with Winged Migration, others prefer to judge them, like Michael Moore with Bowling for Columbine. Still others work to alienate an audience, like Leni Riefenstahl with her Triumph of the Will, a famous propaganda movie. Despite their different ...
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS 'Captain Phillips' is a true story type movie based on the book ‘A Captain’s duty: Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. I think we can safely assume the ‘with’ means 'ghost-written by Stephen Talty who was hooked up by the publishers who saw a great opportunity for a patriotic airport book and potential movie tie-in'. It is one of those realistic documentary style Paul Greengrass actioners which means it exists in a world that bears a much closer relationship to the one we inhabit on a day to day basis than most films that feature bad guys with AK47’s and muscular men jumping out of planes. This makes for a more gripping film but it also left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth and a desire to find out a little more about the background. As far as I can tell these are the rough historic details: Four young Somali lads (aged 16 – 19) hijacked a big container ship of the coast of Somali. The crew hid from them, then captured one of ...

ON THIS DATE (36 YEARS AGO) October 28, 1977 – Queen: News of the World is released. News of the World is the sixth studio album by Queen, released on October 28, 1977. It reached on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart. Having received some criticism that their first completely self-produced project, A Day at the Races, was a "boring" album, Queen decided to shift their musical focus towards the mainstream but remain as the producers of the next album. After completing the A Day at the Races Tour, the quartet re-entered the studio to begin work on their sixth studio offering in July 1977, enlisting Mike Stone as assistant producer at the Basing Street and Wessex Studios in London. They scaled down their complex arrangements and focused on a "rootsier" sound (as Brian May put it). However the staple of the Queen sound, multitracked harmonies and guitar orchestrations, still exist on this album, albeit a bit more subtly. News of the World shows Queen's songwriting less dominated by May and Freddie Mercury, w ...

I just got off of the phone with my father (who will be 88 in two weeks) for Father's Day. He said he watched the civil war mini-series "North and South." He admitted that the Civil War was a total waste of lives. I got into a discussion with him about how Lincoln primarily fought the war to save the Union; it wasn't a "Civil War," i.e., a war about two different groups wanting to take over the government, but a war of secession; how if they really cared about the slaves, why didn't they give them any reparations or have them take control of the plantations they had been forced to work on; how no other country in the world had a civil war to abolish slavery (he himself talked about this); how there were draft riots in the North. Keep in mind that a few months ago when he saw Spielberg's "Lincoln" he was talking about how Lincoln was his favorite president. I think this mini-series gave him a different perspective on Lincoln. You're never too old to learn the truth—if you're open to it.

Leni Riefenstahl lived to 101 years of age.
Leni Riefenstahl made films demonizing the disabled, too. Some bill maher fans would call that comedy, sadly. Not very humanitarian.
is reading an excellent text by the late, great, Peter Wollen entitled 'Tales of Total Art and Dreams of the Total Museum' where he convincingly connects Dada and Fascism, Hugo Ball's Cabaret Voltaire of 1916 with Hitler's Berlin Olympiad of 1936: Leni Riefenstahl via Mary Wigman and Rudolf von Laban. I wonder whether the founders and namers of the excellent London dance institute, the Laban Centre, knew, in Wollen's words, that the 'Dance Olympiad was placed under the direction of Laban, who had risen to an authoritative position in the Nazi regime, as head of the German Tanzbuhne, an official organisation sponsored by Goebbels and the nazi Ministry of Culture'.

A new piece of political jargon, to go along with "premature anti-fascists" (people from the left who supported the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War), and "rootless cosmopolitans" (the Stalinists' term for Jews), I now learn that some think that the regime of Metaxa in Greece in the 30s was an example of "mimetic fascistisation," which I guess means they were Wannabee Fascists. Tell that to the leftists sent to the islands and Akronauplio. Found it in an otherwise interesting article on "Nelly's" (Elli Sougioultzogloue-Seiradari), and influential photographer in Athens close to the regime and influenced by Nazi artistic trends, and people like Leni Riefenstahl. I can't think how to put this into appropriately awful Greek jargon

Carrie nominates "The Great Dictator" (1940), a humanist cry from the heart disguised as political satire (not to mention a tack-sharp spoof of Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will." Chaplin has a double role as a Jewish barber and the antisemitic dictator, Adenoid Hynkel (think Hitler). In this story of mistaken identity, the barber is recovering from amnesia and does not know that his nation is now under the sign of the double-cross, that Jews are persecuted, and that the ruler is Hynkel to whom he bears a "coincidental resemblance." When the humble barber is mistaken for the megalomanic -- and vice-versa -- the former seizes the chance to make positive political change, puncturing the puffed-up Hynkel. Full of magical moments, including a sequence where the dictator dances with an inflatable globe, the film -- conceived in 1938 -- got viewers to laugh at the Fuhrer. Realizing that taking on Chaplin may be a fool’s effort, Glen nominates “M*A*S*H” (1970), director Robert Altman’s coming-ou .. ...
I was on a panel that answered questions about improvisation yesterday. The panel was a little stumped by the question, "What do you mean by the game in the scene?" and eventually I said words to the effect of, "In short form improv, like Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the rules of the game are explained by a host or caller in the introduction. By adhering to the rules of the game, the players able to create a scene. In a spot improv or (more commonly) in long form, such a scene in a Harold, the game is a tacit agreement, often discovered by accident, between the improvisers which informs what is compelling about the improvisation and which grows and develops as the scene progresses. In a long form, the rules of the game might not be fully established until the game is over, and, in the case of the Harold or other long form, one or more games might be subgames of an ubergame." Someone else probably said that more succinctly, but I think I can work with it. Copyright 2013, all rights reserved. LOL.

It is not uncommon for politicians on both the left and right to compare whomever they are abjuring to Hitler. Argo is a propaganda film. Like the films of Nazi publicist Leni Riefenstahl, it is well-made. Like those of Riefenstahl, it glorifies a murderous criminal organization.
I was in Sundance and an African-American filmmaker chided me -- gently -- for comparing Katheryn Bigelow to Leni Riefenstahl. And I wondered -- but did not say -- how would you feel about a contemporary film -- celebrated by the film establishment -- that celebrated lynching, or at least cast it as a necessary evil or a tough choice that sometimes the US government or local government might have to take for the greater good of the community? Remember that Southern towns FELT it was good for their security to lynch 'troublemakers'...
so Argo won. it really should be a "fictional" tale for the massive mistakes it makes in telling the history of the conflict and region. but good shill, Ben, good job helping to rewrite history and popular opinion before we go to war with Iran. good job buddy! you and Leni Riefenstahl would have had a BALL chilling at the Oscars together.

Oscars 2013: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Oscar odds fade "Zero Dark Thirty," the best- reviewed film of 2012, has become an Oscar longshot because of a political backlash in Hollywood over its depiction of torture in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Since early January, Kathryn Bigelow's critically praised movie has sunk to fifth from third among likely best-picture winners at GoldDerby.com, which ranks award prospects. Actors Ed Asner and David Clennon urged academy voters to snub the film. Author Naomi Wolf called Bigelow "torture's handmaiden" and compared her to Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl. As many of you know I work at a distribution center of books, for our bookstores. I process 2-3000 books a day. And sometimes I find a gem. Today was one of those days. I was going through piles of books and came across a large one, with no dust cover. But it did have some German words on the front cover, one of which I recognized meaning Olympics. So I knew it probably dealt with the Olympics. The top line gold-lettering had several letters missing. All I could read looked like this: Lenir.ns.ahl. So I opened the book. And that's when I discovered it was published in Germany, in 1937. And the author was Leni Riefenstahl! Wow! Literally, a piece of history in my hands. Although she took a lot of criticism for her work with and for Hitler, her photographs are good. No question about it. I checked on Amazon. There are only 2 copies of it being offered on Amazon, both for $420+. Ours is in better shape!

There is no longer any excuse to swallow the BBC/CNN line and not know the truth. Read Mark Curtis's Secret Affairs: Britain's Collusion with Radical Islam (Serpent's Tail) or John Cooley's Unholy Wars: Afghanistan, America and International Terrorism (Pluto Press) or The Grand Chessboard by Zbigniew Brzezinski (HarperCollins) who was midwife to the birth of modern fundamentalist terror. Brzezinski, US president Jimmy Carter's national security adviser, describes a secret presidential directive in 1979 that began what became the current “war on terror”. For 17 years, the US deliberately cultivated, bank-rolled, armed and brainwashed jihadi extremists that “steeped a generation in violence”. Code-named Operation Cyclone, this was the “great game” to bring down the Soviet Union but brought down the Twin Towers. Since then, the news that intel ...

"Miracle Rising" - what a brilliant piece of super-subtle propaganda! Joseph Goedels would have been very proud of this piece of work. Unfortunately for Mac Maharaj and the rest of the colaborators, we have seen this kind of thing before, specifically the well orchestrated timing of it's premier on History channel. A blatant attempt to distract attention from the corruption, nepotism and incompetence of the current leadership and the total imorallity and blatant self-enrichment of the current occupants of the presidency. At the cost of the millions hungry, poor, unemployed and hopeless masses, the impoverishment of the middle class, and the destruction of the economy and a once respected industrial sector. The Coming Invasion of Africa The Real Invasion of Africa Is Not News, and a License To Lie Is Hollywood’s Gift by John Pilger, February 01, 2013 A full-scale invasion of Africa is under way. The United States is deploying troops in 35 African countries, beginning with Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger. Reported by Associated Press on Christmas Day, this was missing from most Anglo-American media. The invasion has almost nothing to do with "Islamism", and almost everything to do with the acquisition of resources, notably minerals, and an accelerating rivalry with China. Unlike China, the US and its allies are prepared to use a degree of violence demonstrated in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Palestine. As in the cold war, a division of labour requires that western journalism and popular culture provide the cover of a holy war against a "menacing arc" of Islamic extremism, no different from the bogus "red menace" of a worldwide communist conspiracy. Reminiscent of the Scramble for Africa in the lat ...
The recent comparisons between Kathryn Bigelow and Leni Riefenstahl are idiotic. Kathryn Bigelow is nowhere near as talented or intelligent a filmmaker as Leni Riefenstahl!
The debate as to whether Zero Dark Thirty endorses torture rages on in the western media. However I think a more accurate answer to that question would come from the media of the countries that have been, bombed, occupied and annihilated in the name of 'The War on Terror'. Biggest shocker of Zero Dark Thirty was realizing it wasn't directed by Leni Riefenstahl.
Naomi Wolf compared Kathryn Bigelow to Leni Riefenstahl. I hope that will be carved on her tombstone (Wolf's) with an epitaph: Behemoth of Blindness.
If you look at the early thirties in Germany, there were very very 'good' national security reasons or even financial reason put forward for incremental steps that led ultimately to the gas chambers. They started with the sick...'useless eaters'...the anarchists...the mentally impaired...and made very 'sane' 'reasonable' sounding arguments about why these folks should be imprisoned or brutalized or done away with. The arguments were right out there in the light of day in mainstream German media, cartoons, newsreels etc.that is why my Leni Riefenstahl comparison with Kathryn Bigelow is even more apt than my initial piece had space to note...it is about the normalization through culture of animal-like practices on the part of the State.
Kathryn Bigelow is our Leni Riefenstahl. Both used film perversely as propaganda to rouse support & empathy for a murderous war machine. A war machine that sends many Americans back home in coffins and kills children in third word countries with depleted uranium missiles. All for the profit of bankers, like the Rothschild family and corporations, like Lockheed Martin, world's largest weapons manufacturers! As an aspiring filmmaker you make me sick!
