An Indian Mothers story My name is Leila Seth. I am 83 years old. I have been in a long and happy marriage of more than sixty years with my husband Premo, and am the mother of three children. The eldest, Vikram, is a writer. The second, Shantum, is a Buddhist teacher. The third, Aradhana , is an artist and film-maker . I love them all. My husband and I have brought them up with the values we were brought up with - honesty, courage and sympathy for others. We know that they are hardworking and affectionate people, who are trying to do some good in the world. But our eldest, Vikram, is now a criminal , an unapprehended felon. This is because , like many millions of other Indians, he is *** and last month, two judges of the Supreme Court overturned the judgment of two judges of the Delhi High Court that, four years ago, decriminalized homosexuality . Now, once again, if Vikram falls in love with another man, he will be committing a crime punishable by imprisonment for life if he expresses his love physicall ...

The right that makes us human is the right to love. To criminalize the expression of that right is profoundly cruel - Leila Seth, Former Judge.
To criminalize right to love is profoundly cruel and inhumane, says Leila Seth
Wrt Sec 377, I am wondering how does it matter whether *** sex is legal or not..I mean if one is in integrity with oneself and one's sexual orientations, then being in a relationship where there is mutual love and respect is easy. I have seen how our hidden sexual desires, take us to abusive situations. And it is this hiding business which leads to improper sexual conduct or abuse or violent sex. The emphasis I feel for LGBT needs to be more on heart energy than simply sexual energy. The over emphasis on 'right to have sex with who I want to' is not the same as 'right to love who I want to'. Are we looking for emotional intimacy? Or sexual pleasures only? Or a healthy balance of both..each stemming naturally from the other? These are deep questions that we all need to ask ourselves..Parents of children need to wake up and be willing to take this out in the open and talk loudly about sexuality and emotional fulfillment. The acceptance needs to happen from the culture and society we all live in. Not fro ...
"I began by saying that Premo and I had brought up our children to believe in certain values. I did not mention some others which we have also sought to inculcate in them: to open their hearts and minds; to admit their errors frankly, however hard this may be; to abjure cruelty; and to repair in a willing spirit any unjust damage they have done to others." - Leila Seth. To have expected some judges of India's highest constitutional court who, as is clear today, don't understand much in the Constitution, to understand allegory, let alone allegory this beautiful, was clearly asking for too much of their limited selves.
Must read: Justice Leila Seth, mother to *** son, condemns Naz 377 reversal: Former Himachal Pradesh high court Chief Justice, Delhi High Court justice and law commission member Leila Seth, who is also mother to a son who is homosexual, writes condemning the Supreme Court judgement re-criminalising homosexual intercourse in the Times of India. The original Delhi High Court judgment striking down section 377 was a “model of learning, humanity and application of Indian Constitutional principles . It was well crafted, and its reasoning clearly set out”, writes Seth. But when the Supreme Court overturned the lower court in December 2012, she was “extremely upset” because of her eldest son, and added: A host of academics and lawyers have critiqued the judgment in great detail, including the non-addressal of the Article 15 argument, and have found it wanting in many respects. I do not intend to repeat those criticisms. However, I should point out that both learning and science get rather short shrift. I ...

Verma that reviewed the laws dealing with sexual assaults against women. The other two members of the committee, which was set up on December 24 in response to the December 16 gang rape and the public outcry that followed, were Justice (retired) Leila Seth and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium. It received over 70,000 responses within a fortnight and came up with its report in a month’s time. The report, which was submitted on January 23, has drawn praise from political parties and women’s organisations that have been urging successive governments to amend or enact laws for women and implement them. Govt ignored us, Justice Verma says New Delhi: Blowing the lid off the government's 'cold' attitude towards the three-member committee it had set up to review rape laws, its chairman Justice J S Verma on Sunday said the panel was offered little else than a couple of rooms in Vigyan Bhavan and a government car to ferry the committee members, with all secretarial assistance and infrastructure being arranged by member Gopal Subramaniam. Lamenting the lack of any office infrastructure for enabling working of the panel out of Vigyan Bhavan, Justice Verma told Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate that the governmental assistance was limited to an official car ferrying Leila Seth and himself from Noida to Vigyan Bhavan or Gopal Subramaniam's office, from where the panel had to operate most of the time. The only secretarial staff made available was a deputy secretary, whose job was to arrange what was needed by the panel. The infrastructure and secretarial staff, including the 15-20 youngsters who assisted the panel, ...
India Seeks Stronger Laws to Protect Women New Delhi—A committee headed by former Chief Justice of India J.S. Verma set up after a student was gang-raped on a bus called on the government to take several steps to improve Indian women's safety, including new legislation to crack down on various forms of sexual harassment and measures to ensure swift justice for victims. The three-member panel was set up by the Home Ministry on Dec. 23, one week after the deadly gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, an attack that triggered a national outcry and a chorus of calls to strengthen Indian laws dealing with violence against women. The committee, which also included Leila Seth, former Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh state, and Gopal Subramaniam, a former solicitor general, submitted its report to the government Wednesday. The panel recommended defining sexual assault in law as "intentional touching of another person when such act of touching is of sexual nature and is without the recipient's consen ...
