Places and people: No 1 - Hunthum's Ghut: Willem Hunthum was the "proprietor" of Tortola at the time of the Second Anglo-Dutch war in the 1670s. He claimed to have bought the Island from the Dutch in the 1650s. There are two versions of how the Territory came to be claimed by the English. Hunthum himself, or at least, his widow, claimed that he had merely asked for the protection of the British Governor of the Leeward Islands, Sir William Stapleton, for himself and the Territory at a particularly dangerous moment during the third Anglo-Dutch war in 1672. Since Sir William Stapleton represented the enemy in that war, it was probably an unwise thing for Hunthum to do if he did not wish his actions to be interpreted as a surrender of himself and the Territory - which is exactly what happened. Stapleton, of course, claimed to have conquered the Island on behalf of the King of England, Charles II. There are ruins in Hunthum's Gut which may, conceivably, be remnants of Hunthum's house. It's nice to think so, an ...

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, located in the Leeward Islands, is a federal two-island state in the West Indies. It is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas by area and population. At the center of St. Kitts is the spectacular peak of Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. Intoxicating natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters, and white sandy beaches combine to make St. Kitts one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus first spotted St. Kitts in 1493. St. Kitts and Nevis occupy an area of 216 km ²

The distinct culture of Polynesians has created some of the most interesting monuments in the world. A true wonder of the world are the Moai sculptures in Easter Island but not less intriguing are the mysterious Tikis statues of Hiva Oa. The temple of Taputapuatea Marae is an ancient pyramid built on the Leeward Islands, French Polynesia. It is considered as one of the most important sacred complexes in Polynesia. Established around 1000 AD, the marae was a place of learning where priests and navigators from all over the Pacific would gather to offer sacrifices to the gods and share their knowledge of the genealogical origins of the universe, and of deep-ocean navigation. During the 15th century ce, the Maori of New Zealand constructed a hill fort known as Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) in Auckland. It is the largest Maori fort ever built. These Earth workers literally carved a fortified complex out of the hill, considered to be the most impressive systems in world. Many of the Maori can also trace their an ...

There's been a lot of chat about the state of LI cricket lately. Many are disappointed that after producing some of the world's greatest cricketers, they have been really disappointing over the last few years. Some are saying players from the different Caribbean territories that are talented but didn't make their respective territorial squads should be asked to play for the Leeward Islands. Some, including the LI coach Ridley Jacobs, have disagreed with that position. What do you think? Should players from different Caribbean territories be allowed to play for the Leeward Islands?

Secret St Kitts: lesser-known attractions, bars and restaurants Our St Kitts expert reveals his favorites lesser-known attractions, bars and restaurants Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park In 1690, British forces began work on a hilltop defence that over the course of the next century grew into an imposing fortress. Built by African slaves, at its peak Brimstone Hill was home to over a thousand soldiers and their families. Abandoned in 1825, it has since been restored and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In my view, it is one of the most spectacular sights in the Leeward Islands. It is also a green and spacious national park with superb views, so feel free to bring a picnic and take your time exploring a monumental ruin that includes a formidable citadel, an engrossing historical museum and a poignant cemetery. It would be difficult to overestimate the impact on Antigua's history of the arrival, one fateful day in 1684, of Sir Christopher Codrington. An enterprising man, Codrington had come to Antigua to find out if the island would support the sort of large-scale sugar cultivation that already flourished elsewhere in the Caribbean. His initial efforts proved to be quite successful, and over the next fifty years sugar cultivation on Antigua exploded. By the middle of the 18th century the island was dotted with more than 150 cane-processing windmills--each the focal point of a sizeable plantation. Today almost 100 of these picturesque stone towers remain, although they now serve as houses, bars, restaurants and shops. At Betty's Hope, Codrington's original sugar estate, visitors can see a fully-restored sugar mill. Most Antiguans are of African lineage, descendants of slaves brought to the island centuries ago to labor in the sugarcane fields. However, Antigua's history of habitation extends as far back as two an ...

New home for basketball could be biggest development in history of the sport * Written by MiyVue.com, Val Henry Basseterre, St. Kitts, Tuesday, 14th January, 2014, (MiyVue.com) – A major infrastructural project that is currently being pursued by one of the leading sporting associations on the island is being viewed as a catalyst that could not only revive the sport locally, but also transform the game at the sub-regional level. The St. Kitts Nevis Amateur Basketball Association, SKNABA, says it has taken the bold decision to launch a program of re-development of what is now called Basketball City, located at the top of Victoria Road in Basseterre. General Secretary of the body, Wallis Wilkin, says the upgrade of the new facility, as they envision it, would be a tremendous benefit to basketball. “The consensus of the executive and general membership of the association is that the development would certainly be the biggest upgrade of the sport since the introduction of the game to the island.” This is ...

What a wonderful sight to look at. Don't you wish you were aboard this ship? Located in the Leeward Islands, Antigua is known for its reputed 365 fine beaches, many untouched, its easy going people and a healthy and comfortable year-round climate.
LEEWARD ISLANDS - CARIBBEAN ISLANDS The Leeward Islands comprise Anguilla, Montserrat, Saba, St Barths, St Eustatius, St Maarten, and St Martin. The six Leeward Islands lie in two lines. The rain-forested peaks of a volcano chain include Montserrat, Nevis, and St. Kitts, and lie to the west. To the east are the volcanic ranges of Antigua, Barbuda, and Anguilla. These islands are known for their coral limestone and some of the nicest beaches in the Caribbean. The Leeward Islands were British colonies for many years, but today all but Montserrat and Anguilla are fully independent. The main source of economy for the Leeward Islands is tourism, and all have something special to offer. Because of their British history, the islanders are English speakers.

Whoever called me from Montessrat, Leeward Islands, Caribbean at 2 am. Who are you. Why. Can I come visit?
In the last 48 hours there where 4 quakes along the edges of the Caribbean Plate. 5.0 Colombia and 5.1 Florida straits. Directly opposite each other. On the other edges also opposite each other a 4.4 and a 4.5 Leeward Islands and Mexico. In the last weeks, there have been quakes all around that plate. Since we are from now until just past the full moon in the strongest energy flow, I expect stronger seismic activity in that region. There are two smaller plates that border the Caribbean Plate and they are the Cocos and Nazca Plates, strong seismic activity should be expected there as well. Taking the highly unusual 5.1 in the Florida Straits and at the same time a highly unusual weather event close by, we got 530 mm rain here in 12 hours in the dry season. I believe that there is strong energy flow from this area to the poles due to the hyperactivity of earths core as well as our magnetic field and because of this, I see the area around the Caribbean Plate, as in great danger for highly unusual seismic act ...
Remembering Mr. Horace Williams. He was a pioneer in the barrel shipping business but before that, he was a good cricketer who represented Grenada and the Combined Windward and Leeward Islands. On May 16th 2011 Horace Williams passed away in Brooklyn. I sat in his office a few years ago and discussed the best way to ship some of my books to Grenada. I had just received copies of my first book, “Recollections of An Island Man” and as soon as I did so, I thought of Mr. Williams and his shipping agency. Mr. Williams, also called “Black Sheep” (you can’t escape a nickname in Grenada) was a warm ,easy-going man. He offered me a chair in his office. I went there to talk about shipping the books but for the first hour or so our conversation had nothing to do with books. I called up a pal of mine who lived in Florida and told him that I was chatting with Mr. Williams. Well, they took over the conversation and the young workers who sat outside with their computers and paperwork constantly raised their .. ...

JACOBS - I THOUGHT LONG AND HARD Obviously, playing for your home team would be a player’s first preference, as home is the place you grew and know to love and it is always a pleasure representing Guyana and also the people of Guyana, but it was something I had to think about, talked over with my family and persons who have an influence in my career, so in short I thought long and hard before arriving at my decision.” Those were the words of Guyana’s off-spinning all-rounder Steven Jacobs, who was recently released by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), following a request from the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) for the 25-year-old Jacobs to lead the side in the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board NAGICO Super50 tournament. “Playing for CCC would not be any different for me, as I still plan to go out there and put in 100%, doing what I have to do to ensure my team win. “Added to that, it can be seen as an improvement for my own cricket, as I really wanted to take it to the next level and I see ...

A day of delays. My first LIAT flight from Santo Domingo to Antigua left 45 minutes late! And arrived into a complete chaos of VC Bird International Airport of Antigua, or whatever one would dare to call that old building. New terminal building was under construction and the island needed it very badly. Only four gates were in operation at the old airport. These had to accommodate three intercontinental flights and six international flights within a space of an hour. They could not cope with that. In addition, for some absurd reason - if there actually was one - air-side transit passengers had to undergo security and body checks as they disembarked the aircraft and entered the transit zone of the departure lounge! LIAT has become famous for their tardiness and frequent cancellations. As they acquired all other airlines operating within the Windward Islands and most that operate between the leeward and Windward Islands, they became an arrogant monopolist. The rudeness of their staff has been beyond defini ...

"I was now considering how strangely the grain of mustard-seed, planted about fifty years ago, has grown up. It has spread through all Great Britain and Ireland; the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man; then to America from the Leeward Islands, through the whole continent, into Canada and Newfoundland. And the societies, in all these parts, walk by one rule, knowing religion is holy tempers; and striving to worship God, not in form only, but likewise ‘in spirit and in truth.’" John Wesley's Journal, March 23, 1785.

Did you know that... A hurricane in January? Well, on this date in 1955, both the latest and earliest hurricane on record moved through the Atlantic. Hurricane Alice actually formed on December 31, 1954, but it moved over the Leeward Islands today with winds of 85 mph.
Princess Juliana International Airport (IATA: SXM, ICAO: TNCM) (also known as Sint Maarten International Airport) serves the Dutch part of the island of Saint Martin. In 2007, the airport handled 1,647,824 passengers and 103,650 aircraft movements. The airport serves as a hub for Windward Islands Airways and is the major gateway for the smaller Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Saba, St. Barthélemy and St. Eustatius. It is named after Juliana of the Netherlands, who as crown princess landed here in 1944, the year after the airport opened.
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, 4th NOVEMBER 2013 (CUOPM) – A British newspaper is reporting St. Kitts as “a warmth, character and identity that are all its own.”    Journalist Nigel Tisdall, writing in the Travel Section of the Telegraph headlined: “St. Kitts: The Gibraltar of the West Indies” noted that the British left a legacy on the tiny Caribbean outpost where the colonisation of the Leeward Islands began.   Huggie. De Wiggle. Who’s Your Daddy? Love Sponge... Driving in the Caribbean is invariably entertaining, but the nicknames and slogans emblazoned on the vehicles charging around St Kitts are exceptionally vivid. NEWSDAY JULY 9, 2K13 et: Showers from Chantal Tuesday, July 9 2013 Tropical Storm Chantal is not expected to pass directly over Trinidad and Tobago. However, the country is still likely to expect showers and thunder showers today because of the proximity of the storm. An officer of the Meteorological Office yesterday told Newsday, Chantal was moving quickly towards the West-Northwest, making its way across the Leeward Islands. At the time, at about 3 pm, Chantal was centred at about 760 km east-southeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds near 75 km/hr. The initial forecast from the Met Office, he said, was that an increase of cloudiness associated with the system was expected at about midnight last night with showers, and isolated thunder showers early this morning. He said cloudiness would decrease, but the showers and isolated thunder showers would remain. In addition, tomorrow would be mostly cloudy with light to moderate showers and the risk of some showers becoming heavy and thundery during th ...
REGIONAL UNDER 17 ROUND II ON TODAY SCARBROUGH, TOBAGO - The Trinidad and Tobago Under-17’s narrow escape against the Leeward Islands in the Regional Under-17 tournament in Tobago on Monday tested the home team’s mettle. But the two-wicket victory also and gave them the belief that they can conquer any opponent. The Varindra Jagrup-led team will be in for another fierce battle today when they travel to Louis D’or for the second round match against the Windward Islands, who are also high in confidence following their nine-wicket demolition of Guyana at Bon Accord in round one. The other matches today will see defending champions Jamaica up against the Leewards at Bon Accord, and Barbados taking on Guyana at Shaw Park with all matches bowling off at 9.30 a.m. At Louis D’or, the Windwards will have experience on their side with Gidron Pope, Kyle Cabey and Daryl Cyrus all returning from their 2012 squad that finished third in the inaugural tournament. Pope was one of their leading run scorers in 2012, ...
A preview of my manuscript, " Education Sacrificed" soon to be self-published 13 Chapters: CHAPTER ONE LIFE GROWING UP IN ST. KITTS, West Indies St. Kitts is a tiny island 68 square miles located in the Leeward Islands. Many wars were fought over this rich agricultural paradise. St. Kitts changed hands several times between the French, British and Spanish. St. Kitts is known for its rich fertile soil and volcanic black and white sand beaches. At one point, sugar was the main export. Now tourism is the main focus along with emphasis on some organic agricultural produce. St. Kitts boasts of its Music Festival which is competitive with other festivals throughout the world. The St. Kitts Music Festival is now in its 13th year schedule for June, 2013. Many thousands from all over the world visit each year and partake in this festive extravaganza. Once there, they take advantage of sight seeing. Thinking about 14 days of sailing the American and British Virgin Islands, and at least a fair piece of the Leeward Islands. The Caribbean Sea, its islands and its people is a wondrous and amazing place. Thanks to Ray and Jennifer Bryan, and their marvelous Irwin 52 "Jalapeno", Sherry, Meredith and I got to sail it, see it, live it and taste it. First passage was 30+ hours of a beat in 17-20 knot trade winds, with 5-8 foot seas. Not for everybody, and definitely not all fun, but it does let you know you are alive, when there are only 5 of you on the boat, and you are the only boat for miles, and you have 10 hours to sail in total darkness before you see a hint of land. There is a line from a song that says "When you see the Southern Cross for the first time, you'll know why you came this way"---Well, I saw the Southern Cross for my very first time, standing on the deck of Sunshine's bar and restaurant on the island of Nevis--only took me 60 years to get there. Talking Cricket. I saw a replay of the Ramdhin incident. Heard a commentator say he should have pleaded guilty and apologised. My question is yes. Does an umpire get sanctioned when he raises the finger incorrectly? What about a batsman not walking when he hit the ball and Ump say not out? Just asking

Yesterday was Fia’s 2nd birthday. We gave her the rest of her full name – her middle name that is. Sofia Amity Whelpley Amity means “friendship” which she embodies like crazy. We decided when she was born that we’d wait until she was 2 to give her a middle name that reflected the personality that she’s grown into. Sunday during a layover at JFK she made friends with two little Saudi boys who were on their way to Disney world. She giggled, ran and climbed with the both of them and drew smiles and broken conversation from her parents and family. We gave her a first name that we hope will embody her: Sofia means “wisdom“. Her nickname, Fia, means either “firey” or “peaceful night” – she can definitely be both of those; which we like a lot. For those of you that don’t know, Whelpley means “guarded pasture for small animals“. It’s rooted in the words “whelp” and “ley”. Whelp is easy to figure out. Ley is related to “lee” like the leeward side of an island, which is ...
Reprinted from Caribbean News Now! caribbeannewsnow.com Letter: Did the government warn buyers of Bequia land that they would be blighted by low flying aircraft? Published on June 10, 2013 Dear Sir: St Vincent and the Grenadines is located in the Eastern Caribbean at 13º north and 61º west or about 100 miles west of Barbados. The Argyle International Airport is located on the eastern coastline of St Vincent, with a geographical alignment of 20º -43' - 54" / 200° - 43' – 54'. Taking the magnetic variation into consideration, the runway designation is 02 and 20. If you take a line for approach from the south running at 200 degrees magnetic from Argyle that sets the approach over the lower Grenadines. If you have the appropriate sea charts available you will be able to determine yourself that approaching aircraft will then fly low over Bequia and Mustique. The whole of the Grenadines will experience aircraft noise at one level or another. The proposed runway will be designated a non-precision approach ...

Who is king of Redonda? In 1865, Matthew Dowdy Shiell, a trader from the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, laid claim to a mile-long rock in the island chain, named Redonda by Columbus in 1493. He declared himself king, and when his son, Matthew Phipps Shiell, was fifteen, the father had him anointed king of Redonda by the Bishop of Antigua. In the 1880s, anxious to mine its guano and phosphates, England annexed Redonda as part of Antigua. The Shiells were allowed to retain their title as monarch of the island. Matthew Phipps Shiell migrated to England where, under the name of M.P. Shiel, he wrote many books of fantasy. When he died in 1947, he left the Island of Redonda to a young poet, Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong, who wrote under the name of John Gawsworth. Gawsworth was born in London in 1912, of Irish and Scottish descent. He liked to claim famous ancestors, among them Mary Fitton, who some claim is Shakespeare's dark lady, though many dismiss this claim. While he was still a teen, Gawsworth's mother ...

Waves of up 14 feet are expected today, prompting a high surf advisory for much of the state. The National Weather Service advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday and calls for wave heights between 8-to-12-feet today with occasional 14-foot sets. Wave heights are expected to diminish to 6-to-9 feet on Thursday. The advisory covers nearly all Kauai and Niihau shores, southern and Waianae coast shores of Oahu, leeward shores of Maui, and all of Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii island, according to the weather service. Forecasters warn of strong shore breaks, and rip currents that will make swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers are urged to listen to ocean safety officials and to be cautious.
Here's a little "extra info" on the geography of the Caribbean: ISLANDS, ISLETS AND CAYS: Overall the Caribbean is comprised of more than 7,000 islands. That number includes islets (very small rocky islands); cay's (small, low islands composed largely of coral or sand) and a few inhabited reefs: See Belize. The largest islands in the Caribbean are Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (divided into the two separate political units of Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and Puerto Rico. THE ANTILLES: The majority of the Caribbean islands (called the West Indies) form a large arc extending eastward from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and south from the Florida peninsula in the United States, ending off the northeastern coastline of South America. The Lesser Antilles, are part of the Antilles, which together with the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, the Turks and Caicos and Greater Antilles all form the West Indies. The Lesser Antilles begin to the east of Puerto Rico. This long chain of smaller islands, bordered in the eas ...

A sample letter: We would like to respectfully request that the Army Corps of Engineers deny Curles Neck Farm their request to build a 2,654 foot cofferdam on their farm which they stated in their first project application is necessary to counteract the detrimental effects of projected water-level rise on the tidal James River. But because the landowner discovered that a permit cannot be granted based on suspected future conditions, they then filed a second project application to build their dam in order to create wildlife habitat. The detrimental effects of constructing this dam would so far outweigh the supposed benefits of wildlife habitat that issuing a permit on that basis would be ludicrous. In denying this permit, we would also ask that the Corps require the Applicant to remove the illegal levy across the mouth of Curles Creek at the James which was built in 1969 without a permit, and restore the freshwater tidal wetlands to their natural state which have been altered since that time. In doing ...

208 million in supplementary spending to be added to the 2013 budget and we only in the sixth month of year.Almost 100% will go towards the Argyle airport.I heard this morning that the MCMH doesn't have an ultrasound machine. The roads on the leeward side of the island have-not had an upgrade since 1998,fishermen hardly have market outside of SVG for their fish, unemployment is rampant, the private sector is owed over 60 million by this government and there is so much hopelessness and dissolution in this country. 208 million for an airport that seem to be sinking the country economically.I am yet to see the employment and economic activity this massive project have created.I know personally to get a job on that project you have to get a letter from some minister of government or a referral from such.I guess SVG land not so beautiful anymore but all these happenings won't detour me from moving back home for good.I have plans to make my contribution towards nation building.
ITS NINE MORNINGS! “Celebrating 100 years of a unique Vincentian tradition” Nine Mornings is a unique Vincentian festivity associated with the Christmas season. Nine Mornings before Christmas, Vincentians awake in the early hours of the morning and part take in a range of activities, among them sea baths, dances (or in local parlance, fetes), bicycle riding and street concerts. In the rural areas, the final morning of the festivity usually ended with a steel band “jump-up”. The origins of this festivity are clouded in some mystery, although the oral tradition relates it to the ‘novena’ of the Catholic Church on the nine days before Christmas. It is believed that after the early morning church services of the Catholics, worshippers began walking the streets while others went for sea baths. From this the popular festivity emerged. Although popular opinion has this practice as starting during the period of slavery, it was more likely to have been a post-emancipation practice. It is also bel ...

Residents of Saint-Barthélemy (Saint-Barthélemoise people) are French citizens and work at establishments on the island. Most of them are descendants of the first settlers, of Breton, Normand, Poitevin, Saintonge and Angevin lineage. French is the native tongue of the population. English is understood in hotels and restaurants, and a small population of Anglophones has been resident in Gustavia for many years. The St. Barts French patois is spoken by some 500–700 people in the leeward portion of the island and is superficially related to Quebec French,[22][23][24] whereas Créole French is limited to the windward side. Unlike other populations in the Caribbean, language preference between the Créole and Patois is geographically determined, and not racially.[25][page needed]

Throughout the Changing Scenes of Nevisian Politics The political history of Nevis emerges from a relatively favored position enjoy by the colonialist. Because of the high sucrose content of the sugar cane grown on Nevis, the island was rated as one of the more important Leeward Islands. The post emancipation period was politically characterized by personnel who represented the queen, and a small but affluent Jewish community. In the early 1880's in an effort to easier manage the colonies of the Leeward Islands, the state of St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla was formed and political power wielded its authority from the largest of the three islands which was St. Kitts. Ultimate political power remained in the hands of Britain, while some power was delegated to the queen’s representative on the islands. It is this union of these three islands and the inequitable management which followed, that caused the smallest of the three islands to exit the political arrangement by a successful revolution in the latter p ...
