A schoolgirl targeted by hate campaigners who claimed she wrongly accused a married man of rape has been vindicated after 20 years. As a 13-year-old, she was spat at, beaten, bullied and forced to move house because she told police that publican Harry Davey raped her in his living room. Harry Davey denied any wrongdoing and forensic tests at the time were inconclusive. However, advances in DNA technology have enabled detectives to trap Davey in a cold case review two decades after he committed the crime. The victim, whose life has been ruined by her ordeal as a teenager, finally saw justice done when Davey was jailed for six years and eight months at Leeds Crown Court. Davey, 65, had again denied responsibility when he was re-arrested last April, but eventually pleaded guilty to rape in the face of overwhelming DNA evidence.

A MAN has been charged with the murder of a convicted sex offender who disappeared from an address in Dewsbury last week. Robert Hind, regarded by police as a “risk to children”, was last seen on CCTV at Huddersfield Bus Station on Wednesday December 11. On Monday police searching for 46-year-old Hind found a body in the River Colne in Milnsbridge. David Mitchell, also 46, of Manchester Road, Cowersley, is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court tomorrow (Thurs) charged with murder. Supt Scott Wood, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “We can now confirm that the suspected human remains recently recovered from the Colne Vale area of Huddersfield are that of missing man Robert Edward Hind.” A post-mortem examination revealed Hind died as a result of strangulation and head injuries. Confiscation orders - crime doesn't pay In December 2012 two local people from Pope Street, Altofts were arrested for producing cannabis. They were subsequently found guilty and on Friday 27th September both were given confiscation orders by a Judge at Leeds Crown Court. This will mean that any money or assets may be seized and recovered, making sure these criminals will not gain through their criminal activity. West Yorkshire Police will receive some of these proceeds back, which will then be used for community projects on your area. This is part of the ongoing operation using the Proceeds of Crime Act to seize money and assets from those who commit crime. "How do they afford it?" April Jones' killer, Mark Bridger, was slashed with a knife fashioned out of a razor at Wakefield Prison. His attacker Juvinal Ferreira, 24, had five years added to his existing term, at Leeds Crown Court today. The premeditated attack happened three days after Bridger was allowed to associate with other prisoners. Ferreira and other life prisoners had talked about attacking Bridger to make him reveal the whereabouts of April's body, police were told. Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, said: "He said that Bridger's crime had been discussed, and he claimed people had suggested that if Bridger was attacked, rather than say befriended, Bridger would then be more likely to reveal where April Jones's body was." Mr Justice Coulson, who sentenced Juvinal Ferreira for attacking Mark Bridger over a videolink, said the motive for the attack was no mitigation.
LATEST: A prisoner who attacked April Jones's killer Mark Bridger is given a second life sentence at Leeds Crown Court
APRIL JONES KILLER: A life prisoner is due to be sentenced for slashing child killer Mark Bridger in one of the country’s top security jails, in West Yorkshire. Juvinai Ferreira, 22, used a makeshift knife to attack the 47-year-old who abducted and murdered five-year-old April Jones in Machynlleth, Wales, a year ago. Ferreira, also a convicted murderer, has admitted wounding Bridger in an attack at Wakefield Prison in July. He will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court. According to reports at the time of the attack, Bridger needed hospital treatment to a face wound after he was slashed. He was returned to Wakefield after his injury was stitched. Ferreira appeared via video link for his plea hearing last month and appeared impatient. After Judge Christopher Batty told Ferreira the case was going to be adjourned, he said to him: “Can you just not sentence me? I can’t keep coming back. Just give me anything and move on.” The judge told him a pre-sentence report was necessary to *** his level of dange .. ...
~PaL~ Ha Ha.see ya! Five men have been jailed for a total of 109 years for smuggling more than £9m of heroin hidden in baby powder bottles into the UK. The gang would use British post offices send parcels to their accomplices in Pakistan using a tracked service. Once they arrived, the contents would be replaced with plastic bottles of Johnson's baby powder, which contained packages of heroin. The parcels were resealed and returned to addresses in Hull and Manchester marked 'undelivered - return to sender' or similar words, Leeds Crown Court heard. During the ten-week trial the jury heard the smuggling came to light in 2011 after staff at a Royal Mail delivery office in Hull, East Yorkshire, became suspicious at the number of such parcels arriving there. Five were intercepted and found to contain an average of 1.9kgs of heroin, which would fetch £473,000 at street value. Police identified from records that a further 94 packages had been delivered which with a similar content meant a street value of £8.9 ...

Paedo Postman Jailed 9 Years Peter Stafford-Simpson A PAEDOPHILE ex-postman has been jailed for nine-and-a-half years for a string of “vile” sex crimes against vulnerable young girls. And Peter Stafford-Simpson went to jail with stinging criticism from a judge. Judge Rodney Jameson QC said one of the most distressing aspects of the trial was watching a now young woman “struggling to cope to relive the ordeal” that she had been turned into a virtual “child prostitute” by Stafford-Simpson. Stafford-Simpson, 48, lured young girls to perform sex acts on him by offering them cash and alcohol. He later asked them to urinate in a jar and his mouth, the court heard. He was sentenced yesterday at Leeds Crown Court for committing 18 sexual offences against teenage girls between 2006 and 2011 including sex with a child. He had earlier been cleared of three counts of raping a 15-year-old girl. Stafford-Simpson, of Fenton Road, Lockwood, claimed throughout the trial it was a case of mistaken identity, sayi ...

Zsiga Pankotia (or Pankotai[1]) was a 31-year-old Hungarian-born murderer who was hanged on 29 June 1961 at Armley Gaol, Leeds, West Yorkshire, (now HM Prison Leeds).[2] He was hanged by Harry Allen for the murder of Jack Eli Myers[1] in a house burglary in the city's affluent Roundhay district. Under the Homicide Act 1957, Pankotia could be sentenced to hang because he had murdered Myers during a robbery (which was considered an exceptional circumstance, therefore hanging was an option open to the judiciary). He was the last man to be hanged at Armley Gaol.[3] Pankotia was tried, convicted and sentenced at Leeds Crown Court and did not appeal against the decision. The hanging had been the first in Leeds since 1959.

Read this what a sick *** Ex-lover made to watch murders Otak was told he acted out of "childish jealousy" A man who forced his ex-girlfriend to watch him murder her sister and her friend after she refused to take him back has been jailed for life. Ahmad Otak, an asylum seeker from Afghanistan, stabbed 17-year-old Kimberley Frank and Samantha Sykes, 18, in March in West Yorkshire. He then abducted his ex partner, 19-year-old Elisa Frank, and drove to Dover in a bid to flee the country. Otak was jailed for a minimum of 34 years at Leeds Crown Court. Otak, who repeatedly lied about his age but is thought to be at least 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of murder at a hearing in October. Judge Justice Coulson told the double killer he "behaved like an animal" and was "incapable of behaving like a human being". He said he was a "practised liar" who repaid the generosity the UK had shown to him by murdering two teenage girls with a "significant degree of premeditation". This might be of interest to former Calendar News colleagues : EX-ITV MANAGER JAILED OVER FRAUD By Sam Beattie, Press Association A former ITV finance manager who invented a bogus company to con the broadcaster out of more than has today been jailed for three-and-a-half years. Darren Smith, 38, of Leeds, signed off fake invoices worth up to each while working for ITV Yorkshire, Tyne Tees and Border. He recruited recovering drug addict Steven Marsden, 48, to pose as a contractor and bank the fraudulent payments. Marsden, who was sentenced alongside Smith, was jailed for two years. Leeds Crown Court heard how ITV inadvertently paid Marsden around for camera and training work and to a fictitious production company over a two-year period. Ian Mullarkey, prosecuting, said Smith was trusted to handle multimillion-pound budgets as part of his job. He said: "He was exploiting his knowledge of the internal workings of the accountancy system at ITV and paying for services which had never even been provided." The fa ...
Film of a man being killed in the street by repeated blows with a pick axe handle has been played at a murder trial. The attack on Jason Seed in broad daylight was captured from just a few yards away by CCTV cameras on a house in Guard House Avenue, Braithwaite, Keighley. Footage of Duane Bellamy striking Mr Seed six blows to the head as he lay prone in the sunny street was shown to the jury at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. Bellamy, 25, of Braithwaite Drive, Keighley, denies murdering Mr Seed as they fought in the street at 10.30am on February 15. Prosecutor Richard Mansell QC told the jury Bellamy viciously attacked Mr Seed while he was defenceless. Mr Seed, 44, of Upper Rushton Road, Fagley, Bradford, was left unconscious and bleeding from his head. He had suffered fractures to both sides of his skull with underlying brain damage. The jury was told the men were fighting in the street after Bellamy broke the window at a flat. Film of Mr Seed wielding a plank and Bellamy armed with a branch was shown in co ...
A street preacher in Bradford has been jailed for sexually abusing a young girl. Owen Watt, 40, was branded a predatory paedophile by the child's mother after he was locked up for two years by a judge at Leeds Crown Court. She labelled him dangerous and manipulative and said she was relieved he was now behind bars. Watt, the Bradford leader of a Leeds-based religious group, Faith Ministries, was told by Judge Scott Wolstenholme yesterday that he had "abused the girl's trust in the grossest way". Watt, a fervent gospel preacher, had been earlier convicted of three offences of sexually abusing the girl, whose identity is protected by law, over an eight-year period. A jury at Bradford Crown Court heard in January that he ordered her to rub him with oil when she was seven years old. He went on to indecently assault her on two further occasions when she was in her early teens. Watt was found guilty on a majority verdict of one charge of gross indecency with a child and two of indecent assault. He had been rema ...
A pensioner who raped and sexually abused a woman with learning difficulties has been jailed for an indeterminate period. Judge Geoffrey Marson QC described Anthony Fruin as a dangerous sexual predator and ordered that he must serve at least four years behind bars before he is even considered for parole. Fruin, 71, of North Queen Street, Keighley, was given an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. His barrister Sophie Drake said he was in poor health and now expected to die in prison. Fruin was convicted at Bradford Crown Court on August 3 of two charges of rape, sexual assault by touching and assault by penetration. The court heard that he abused his vulnerable 39-year-old victim between March 20 and April 19 this year. 'It was perfectly obvious that your victim had significant learning' Judge Geoffrey Marson, QC The woman had learning difficulties and suffered significant health problems after a serious childhood illness, prosecutor Colin Hendron told th ...
A middle-aged church elder, who had never had an intimate relationship, sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl, a Court heard. Mark Durrans, 48, was told by a judge that it was a “very serious and worrying offence”. But Recorder Martin Bethel QC sentenced Durrans, of Leeds Road, Bradford, to a three-year community order with supervision and a requirement to attend a sex offenders’ programme, after a psychologist suggested the defendant was in the lowest risk category of re-offending. Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday that Durrans entertained the girl, who was at a loose end at a Christmas lunch last year. In the course of playing, he went under a rug with her, where the sexual assault took place. Durrans denied sexually assaulting the girl, but was convicted after a trial. Recorder Bethel said Durrans was still living with his parents and had never had an intimate relationship with anybody else. He had no previous convictions for offences of any kind and the judge said he had already been punishe ...
