FIA World Endurance Championship, FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), LMP1 test in Abu Dhabi (UAE), LMP1 test Successful first test in the desert Today the Porsche Team concluded the first test with the new Porsche 919 Hybrid. For five days the Weissach based squad has run the second generation of the Le Mans prototype on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit. The development work with the team was done by the LMP1 works drivers, Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Neel Jani (Switzerland). Again, at the same time, drivers from the Porsche GT programme – Earl Bamber (New Zealand), Frédéric Makowiecki (France) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain) – were behind the wheel of the 919. In total the drivers covered 4,092 kilometres. Despite occasional rain showers in the desert, overall the testing conditions were good. Nigel Stepney 1958 – 2014 Daventry UK: JRM regrets to announce that Nigel Stepney, the company’s Racing Team Manager and Technical Director, was killed in a car accident this morning. He was 56 years old and leaves his loving partner and daughter, Ash and Sabine Stepney. Nigel Joined JRM in 2010 after a long and distinguished career in Formula One. He was the driving force behind the development of the Nissan GT-R GT car in JRM’s role as the Official Partner of Nissan Motorsports International (Nismo). Under Nigel’s excellent stewardship, JRM won the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship with Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr – a success that was also rewarded with JRM receiving the coveted RAC Tourist Trophy. A year later, Nigel led JRM Racing into the FIA World Endurance Championship with an LMP1-specification Honda. Webber, driving a Porsche 919 Hybrid, was just a 10th of a second behind team-mate Timo Bernhard, who clocked 1min 41.788sec, on the first day of testing at the Paul Ricard circuit. Australian veteran Webber spent 12 seasons in F1 and was third in the World Championship in 2013 before he decided to quit and race sports cars instead. The eight-round world endurance championship gets underway at Silverstone on April 20 and ends at Sao Paulo on November 30. The series also includes the famed Le Mans 24 Hour Race on June 14.

Now that Le Mans is over, what’s next in the World Endurance Championship series? An inaugural visit to Silverstone. This event is slated for August 26. Then there’s Sao Paulo on September 15, Sakhir on September 29, Fuji on October 14, Shanghai on October 27. Audi Sport Team Joest has been dominant this year through Sebring, Spa-Francorchamps and Le Mans, but there's still much racing to be done.

Asian Le Mans Series is back in 2013 Revived series to host five or six events in three countries. In 2009, the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) organised its first event in Asia, the Asian Le Mans Series' round at Okayama, Japan, where 23 starters representing 16 nationalities took part. The launch of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in 2010 with three events, one of which was held in China for the first time in Zhuhaï (repeated in 2011), provided a perfect complement to this step-by-step approach, designed to lead to an increase in numbers in the long term. The rise in the number of drivers from the Asian continent is a strong sign of the growing interest in endurance racing there. In 2008, Kung Fu Cheng was the first Chinese driver to finish on the podium in the Le Mans 24 Hours with Oak Racing in LM P2. In 2012, eight drivers from Asia are on the entry list, including one from India.
