Audi beats Toyota to Le Mans victory Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday with Tom Kristensen taking his ninth victory alongside co-drivers Allan McNish and Loic Duval. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by the death of Aston Martin GTE driver Allan Simonsen following an accident in the early hours of the race. Audi's closest rivals, Toyota, finished a lap down in second with ex-F1 drivers Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi driving alongside Stephane Sarrazin to give the Japanese manufacturer its best result since returning to Le Mans last year. Audi rounded off the LMP1 podium with Marc Gene, Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Jarvis finishing third in the No.3 Audi. The No.7 Toyota, driven by Alexander Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima, had been in the running for the final podium place, but in trying to keep pace with Jarvis's Audi in wet conditions, Lapierre crashed into the barriers. Marshals managed to excavate the Toyota from the tyre barrier and Lapierre drove it back to the pits ...

Le Mans heads into the closing stanza. It's been an event-filled Le Mans 24 Hours, of which 22 are now complete. The early pace-setters Audi are firmly in command after their two threats (the Toyotas) both retired, one after a massive accident in which driver Anthony Davidson sustained a broken back, and the other, when a contact, while Kazuki Nakajima was at the wheel, caused the machine to drop out. The real battle is now between the and E-Tron R18 Audis, with the machine of Brenoit Treluyer currently one lap ahead of the car driven by Allan McNish. This is quite a turnaround from a little over an hour ago when 2011 winner Treluyer spun on the entry to the pit lane after a fierce battle with the Scotsman. The French driver is now back in the lead after McNish spun at the Porsche Curves. In third place, the Audi of Jarvis, Bonanomi and Rockenfeller sits three laps from the lead. The Audi, now nine laps in arrears, is fifth, with the Lola from Rebellion Racing sitting fourth. Meanwhile, LM P2 is being hot ...
