It has works from artist like Langston Hughes; Sonia Sanchez; Nikki Giovanni; Roald Dahl; J. R. R. Tolkien; Robert Frost; Gwendolyn Brooks; Ogden Nash. Has anyone read from Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou ? I think this will be a good intro for my little ones to Dr. Angelou.
A TRIBUTE TO Maya Angelou-- My words (Charlene Henry Kenon): I have always loved writing, poems to be specific. I love words and what they do to us. I get this high just reading statements, words that make me go "wow." It is like partaking of a favorite dish. People like Maya loved words, life and found a "write" in everything. A mentor she is and was. She received some of my words once, and what a schedule she had. She was to get back with me so her assistant said. I came this close.but time never presented itself. There are/were many that we are so gifted to have their words: James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Edgar Poe, Paul Dunbar, Alice Walker, Robert Frost, Toni Morrison, and others. Writing is the thing we do when words of mouth flee. I am sharing some of Maya's here. She will be missed. _ I don't know how much longer I'll be around. I'll probably be writing when the Lord says, 'Maya, Maya Angelou, it's time.' To take a few nouns, and a few pronouns, and adverbs and adjec ...
One of my greatest moments in life was to sit at the feet and in the presence of Dr. Maya Angelou!! I often use her profound words from her books and poetry in speeches that I have made!! I have enriched my thinking by reading her work, such as "I know Why the Cage Bird Sings," "Phenomenal Woman," "A Brave and Startling Truth," "Million Man March Poem," "Just Give Me A Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie," "President Clinton's Inaugural Poem," and so many more!! Long lives her memory as an civil rights activist, poet, Author, scholar, humanitarian...! Ain't Dr. Maya (Marguerite Ann Johnson) Angelou a woman!!! For those of us who read, it is my opinion, that her writing and work ranks with that of William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Nikki Giovanni, Ernest Hemingway, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Emily Dickerson, and so many other of my favorites! Hail to the Queen and the fairest of them ALL!!
Five year olds are way too amazing with the essence of poetry. Another incredible session. Kids brought favourite poems back from their home, poems that their family members like and what amazing discussions we had and we read - Rabindranath Tagore, Ruskin Bond, Robert Frost, William Wordsworth, poems by aunts, fathers, sisters, brothers, Langston Hughes, A.A.Milne, Kenn Nesbit, William Blake, Emily Dickinson and we are not done yet! Thanks to all the parents for participating so enthusiastically and sharing so many poems they loved. It is amazing how they can spot a beautiful line, a lovely visual, a silent moment and a thoughtful note. " I have heard the liquid murmur of the river through the darkness of midnight;) - From Tagore's ' The First Jasmines" was loved by a lot of kids. Reasoning - It is quiet at night and it will be beautiful. " And the sea so complete in itself, Rests like a raindrop On the hand of God." - Ruskin Bond, "Raindrop" _ Some of the kids who liked these lines said, they love the i ...

New exhibition, through April 28, 2013. When Walt Whitman published the first edition of Leaves of Grass (1855), it was a shocking departure from the current literary tradition. This first example of free verse was considered irreverent and dismissed by much of the literary establishment. For Whitman, writing poems was an expression of democracy, and including the everyday experience was a key element to this credo. Following Whitman half a century later, Ezra Pound charged fellow poets to “make it new.” Over the course of the next century, these two poets and their fellow writers developed a new language for poetry. “Poetic Likeness,” will consider biographies of poets whose work developed a unique American voice, departing from mid-19th century poetry, which was influenced by Europeans. Some of the key “makers of modernism” included are Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes and Allen Ginsberg. The exhibition curator is historian David C. Ward. This exhibition ...
