TV TERROR: The List So Far... Kyle Chamberlain, James Hogan, and Shar Schwartz Tigner requested a compilation of my recommendations to date. Here it is, each post title and write-up. I'll post updated lists periodically for easy reference so you can copy/paste them somewhere for posterity... TV TERROR: London Bridge becomes a BRIDGE ACROSS TIME (1985) when Jack The Ripper, killed on that site in 1888, is resurrected a century later. Fast-forward to 1985, and we are in Lake Havasu, Arizona, where London Bridge has been reassembled as a tourist attraction. Soon after the final stone is laid, the Ripper's cycle of violence begins anew. David Hassellhoff plays the ex-Chicago cop who pieces the puzzle together, overcoming the complacency of town officials to bring an end to the murders. TV Mystery Theme (October 19) Mission Impossible by Lalo Schifrin. The 1960's was the time of James Bond and spymania. On television, spies were everywhere. But where most of those shows remained iconic to the 60's, Mission Impossible (a little like James Bond himself) keeps updating and reinventing itself. The initial series followed an elite team of agents asked to accomplish the impossible. As each episode unfolded, it always appeared as if they had been undone, unmasked, or unsuccessful -- only to be revealed that was all part of the plot. Initially, the team handled intrigue 'overseas', meaning that grey Checker vehicles stood in for any foreign cars and since all the sets were on the Desilu lot, you'd see a lot of the same actors from Star Trek and the Wild Wild West. Eventually, the team went after American gangsters in later seasons. Although the members were supposed to be famous in some other career - magician, etc. they were never recognized, even when operating inside our borders. The 'tape wi ...

The current list hardly represents all the films he has done since the late 1920's, but it gives you an idea of the scope of his mandolin playing. One of the funniest reviews of the last One More Grain album, written by a certain S Brolan: "I've never been out of London," quoth 'singer' Daniel Quinn. So why the fookin northern twang? Clearly the ill-informed John Cooper Clarke comparisons have gone to this fella's head. Fact is, One More Grain are a contrived endeavour doggy-paddling in shallow waters of pastiche, overlain with poetic dilettantism and musical onomatopoeia. He hears a train coming and "Parp! Parp!" goes the brass section, affecting the sound of a train that only arrives when squeezed out of Lalo Schifrin's bumhole. By the end, The Fly feels essentially lied to, the words 'What kind of creature bore thee?' streaming from our aurally rogered ears.
The Amityville Horror [1979]. It had been too long since I revisited this film. Holy cow, what a film. A little rickety around the edges in parts, but the direction, cinematography and writing are fantastic and driven by performances nailed by the likes of James Brolin. And I haven't even got to the eerie Lalo Schifrin score yet. 95% of so-called "scary" movies of today are amateur night compared to this classic. So much to love.

Well due to the overwhelming number of requests for my lyrics I guess I'll post them. But just this once. The Detached Hand by Ray Cabarga ©1987 [verse 1] Hand written on his face, naturally I was suspicious. Spotting the hidden ace, my first reaction was vicious. suddenly wielding an axe, I removed the offending limb. after repeated attacks, it fell away: The Detached Hand. [verse 2] With an unpleasant smile, I vivisected the liar. In a putrescent pile, I built a funeral pyre. But with a life of its own, something slowly crept away. Somehow by powers unknown, It got away: The Detached Hand [Horn solos: Duduk–16 bars, Stritch–16 bars or until someone in audience pulls a gun.] [verse 3] Separate from its head, it had a sense of direction. How can a thing so dead, travel avoiding detection? Desperately clutching the ground, moving steadily, God knows where. 'Til the detached hand is found, no one is safe: The Detached Hand.

A great question just posted by Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. What would your answer be? "If you could introduce your friends to the music of any composer, who would the composer be?"
know the sound from spy movies -- a low, vibrating string-instrument sound like a dulcimer whose music represents Cold War espionage in central and eastern Europe (spies meet in Vienna, for example). It took me two hours to find the name of the instrument -- cimbalom. Identified mainly with Hungary. Lalo Schifrin composed music with the cimbalom for films and for TV series like "Mission Impossible." Even with all the Internet technology and search engines, it took me 2 hours to nail this. So much for computers. Man is still the measure of all things.
Yes, the groups music was written by Lalo Schifrin, so I guess they just brought in performers.
HIDDEN GEM OF THE DAY: HARRY IN YOUR POCKET From 1973, this is a crime film of a different shade. James Coburn leads a crack team of ace pickpockets, including Michael Sarrazin, Trish Van Devere, and Walter Pidgeon. Throw in a snazzy jazz score by Lalo Schifrin, and the result is a period-perfect rag-tag heist flick in the vein of THE HOT ROCK.

Five Reasons Why We Love the Movie "Charley Varrick": - The Music Like a lot of the great late 60s/early 70s crime movies, the score for "Charley Varrick" was courtesy of Lalo Schifrin. This popular film composer's blend of Latin Music/Jazz/Rock can be heard in such crime film classics as "Bullitt", "Dirty Harry", and "Cool Hand Luke". Plus, he gave us the theme to "Mission: Impossible". His music for "Charely Varrick" perfectly complements the movie's many twists. Come see a rare screening of "Charley Varrick" this Sunday, March 3 at 2PM.

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH... DAY ALF (Anyone who loves the beautiful sound and soul of Bossa Nova Music.. please read the following) Johnny Alf is a true genius, unfortunately he is also highly underestimated. He introduced Brazil to a new way of singing, playing, and composing several years before the term "Bossa Nova" was coined. Tom Jobim, Leny Andrade, Luís Eça, Carlos Lyra, and all those who came after had some Alf influences. Always rejecting the label Bossa Nova, Alf focused on his artistic achievements and let go of the music press, which continued ignoring him. His importance in Brazilian popular music as a fundamental precursor is still to be properly regarded, while he has been frequently recorded by international musicians such as Lalo Schifrin ("Rapaz de Bem"). In Brazil, his playing is registered on 46 albums, singles, compilations, and participations, but he has recorded only nine solo LPs or CDs in his career. His father, an Army sub-official, died in 1932. His mother had to work as a wa ...

With the 55th Grammy Awards now less than one week away, I've been posting the winners of the Song of the Year award for each of the annual awards ceremonies, going back to the very first one. (Please visit the page for the previous posts.) The winner of the Song of the Year award at the 16th Grammy Awards ceremony, which was held on March 2, 1974 was "Killing Me Softly with His Song", a song composed by Charles Fox and written by Norman Gimbel, which was a big No. 1 hit in early 1973 for American R&B/soul/jazz singer, songwriter and musician Roberta Flack. Gimbel came to California in the mid-1960s. He was introduced to the Argentinean-born composer Lalo Schifrin (then of "Mission: Impossible" fame) and began writing songs to a number of Schifrin's films. Both Gimbel and Schifrin made a suggestion to write a Broadway musical together, who Schifrin gave Gimbel an Argentinean novel to read as a possible idea. The book was never made into a musical, but in one of the chapters, the principal character descri ...
